Dishwasher pods look alike on the shelf, yet reviewers who run them side by side still report real differences in grease, stuck-on food and film on the glasses. Your water and your dishes decide which of those differences matter.
This guide covers nine dishwasher pods, packs and tablets. We read the reviews we could open, compared them with what each maker says, and noted where reviewers disagree. Pods only here: gels, powders and dishwasher cleaners are different products.

Quick verdict: the best dishwasher pods for most homes
Buy Cascade Platinum Plus: reviewers keep naming it first for grease and baked-on food. For tough stains and hard water, try Finish Ultimate Quantum. If you want no fragrance or dye, choose Seventh Generation Triple Chamber Packs, and for value, Amazon Basics Detergent Pacs.
The other five cover plastic-free tablets, fragrance-free tubs, an unscented Cascade, glassware and a very large box.

Our picks for the best dishwasher pods
The strongest pods come first, then the plant-based and value picks, then the narrower choices. Where we describe a result, we say whose it is. Reviewers use different methods and water, so a result in one kitchen may not repeat in yours.
1. Cascade Platinum Plus Dishwasher Pods, 62 Count – The Reviewers’ Top Choice

This is the pod that reviewers keep putting first. Reviewed named Cascade Platinum Plus its best dishwasher pod overall, and reported baked-on cheese coming off without pre-scrubbing. GearLab made it its Best Overall in an October 2024 update, saying it excelled at removing grease and left dishes spot-free with minimal residue. Food Network Kitchen called it best for tough loads, and said dishes left in the machine for two days still came out clean.
Cascade says it has twice the grease-fighting and scrubbing power of its Complete ActionPacs, and a 40 percent larger liquid top than Platinum ActionPacs. It says the pod is formulated to help prevent hard water spots and filming, and that it is phosphate free and safe for plumbing and machines.
The complaints are consistent too. Reviewed, GearLab and Food Network all mention a strong scent, and both Reviewed and GearLab call it expensive. GearLab also noted the candy-like look of the pods, which is a good reason to keep the package closed and out of children’s reach.
Why we like it
- First choice at Reviewed and GearLab
- Reported strength on grease and baked-on food
- Cascade says it helps prevent hard water spots
- No wrapper to remove

It suits a family running full, dirty loads that wants the pod with the most agreement behind it.
Skip it if strong fragrance bothers you. Three reviewers mention it; the Cascade Free & Clear below is the same brand with no added perfume.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Agreement across reviewers
- Good on grease, by their reports
- Large pack
Cons
- Strong scent
- Pricier than most, per Reviewed and GearLab
- Reviewed lists it as not biodegradable
2. Finish Ultimate Quantum Dishwasher Pods, 90 Count – Burnt-On Food and Hard Water

Finish calls this its most powerful clean, and aims it at dried-on and burnt-on food. The listing says it needs no pre-rinse, works in hard water and older machines, and leaves a virtually spot-free finish on everything from delicate wine glasses to stainless steel pans.
Reviewed named Finish Ultimate its best value and said it removed stuck-on food and left dishes shiny, with a Powerball rinse-aid center that helps with spots and film, especially in harder water. One caution: this listing is new, and Finish says the formula is improved, so that review may describe an earlier version.
Reviewed also says very hard water may still call for a separate rinse aid, and it lists these pods as scented. The resealable package helps to keep moisture out, according to Finish.
Why we like it
- Finish names burnt-on and 24-hour dried-on stains
- No pre-rinse needed, per Finish
- Reviewed’s best value pick for Finish Ultimate
- Resealable package

Pros and cons
Pros
- Maker aims it at hard water and older machines
- Large count
- No pre-rinse, per Finish
Cons
- New formula, so reviews may not match
- Scented
- Very hard water may need rinse aid, per Reviewed
3. Seventh Generation Triple Chamber Packs, Free & Clear, 54 Count – Plant-Based, With Reviewer Support

Seventh Generation has the strongest independent backing of the plant-based group. Reviewed named its Triple Action packs most eco-friendly and said they outperformed other eco detergents on dried-on food and greasy residue. It does advise pre-rinsing caked-on sauces.
The maker says the packs are free of fragrances, dyes, phosphates and chlorine bleach, and that the product is USDA Certified Biobased at 73 percent. It uses bio-enzymes, and Seventh Generation says the packs degrease, rinse and clean.
Other Seventh Generation pods also do well, though they are different products. Shop TODAY’s editor put Power+ packs second of ten, while GearLab found the older Free & Clear pod about level with other powder pods and weaker on dried condiments. Reviewed says these packs can discolor in heat or humidity, so keep them somewhere cool and dry.
Why we like it
- Free of fragrance, dyes, phosphates and chlorine bleach, per the maker
- Reviewed’s most eco-friendly pick
- USDA Certified Biobased at 73 percent
- Stuck-on food claim from the maker

Skip it if you hate pre-rinsing anything. Reviewed advises it for caked-on sauces.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No fragrance or dye
- Bio-enzyme cleaning
- Strong reviewer support for a plant-based pod
Cons
- May need a rinse aid in very hard water, per Reviewed
- Packs can discolor in heat or humidity
- Maker’s stuck-on claim varies across the listing

4. Amazon Basics Dishwasher Detergent Pacs, 78 Count – A Budget Pod That Reviews Well

Amazon Basics did better in recent reviews than its low-key listing suggests. Shop TODAY’s editor ranked Amazon Basics Dishwasher Detergent first of ten pods in February 2026, mainly because it left far less residue on dried egg than the others. GearLab named Amazon Basics Detergent Pacs its Best Buy, saying they cleaned food off dishes without the opaque film some rivals left.
There is a catch. This listing is dated April 2026, after that ranking, so we can’t say it is the same formula. The same ranking put Presto!, the older Amazon name, last. Treat these reviews as encouraging, not proof.
Amazon lists a 2-in-1 formula of detergent and built-in rinse aid, says no pre-rinse is needed, and says it uses a resealable tub. GearLab mentioned a strong smell and a few spots of leftover food.
Why we like it
- Top of Shop TODAY’s ranking, under the Amazon Basics name
- GearLab’s Best Buy
- Built-in rinse aid, per the listing
- Resealable tub

Pros and cons
Pros
- Good reviews for the brand name
- Built-in rinse aid
- Large tub
Cons
- Reviews may predate this listing
- Strong smell, per GearLab
- Amazon’s own brand, with few details
5. Blueland Dishwasher Detergent Tablets, Free & Clear, 60 Count – No Film Wrap, Mixed on Egg

Most pods here are wrapped in a dissolving film. Blueland’s are pressed tablets with no plastic film, and the maker sells them on that basis. Drop one in the main dispenser and run the machine as usual.
Reviewers split on the cleaning. Reviewed named it best plastic-free and reported strong grime removal, with tablets that dissolved fully even on quick cycles, though some may arrive broken. Domino’s writer picked it as a favorite in 2022. Shop TODAY’s editor placed it near the bottom of ten, and it struggled badly with dried egg.
Blueland lists EPA Safer Choice, USDA BioPreferred, Leaping Bunny and B Corp status, and calls the formula septic-safe. It also says the tablets are new and improved with more enzyme power, so older reviews may not apply.
Why we like it
- Plastic-free tablets, per the maker
- Reviewed’s best plastic-free pick
- Dissolved fully even on quick cycles, per Reviewed
- EPA Safer Choice, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | TAB-AZ-60P-AD |

Skip it if your dishes come in with egg dried on. That was its weak spot in Shop TODAY’s test.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No film wrap
- Fully dissolving, per Reviewed
- Long list of certifications
Cons
- Struggled with dried egg, per Shop TODAY
- Some tablets may arrive broken, per Reviewed
- Reviewers disagree

6. Method Dishwasher Packs, Fragrance Free + Clear, 2 Tubs – Plant-Based Cleaning in Big Tubs

Food Network Kitchen named Method its best plant-based detergent, and said its cleaning power matched traditional detergents. That review describes it as phosphate-free and chlorine bleach-free, with no dyes or fragrance, and says the pouch is partly recycled plastic.
This listing is two resealable tubs of 54 packs each. Method lists hard-water performance, rinse-aid action and removal of 48-hour stuck-on food.
Reviewed liked the Lemon Mint version, naming it best scented and saying a fragrance-free version is available. It also reports occasional spotting, and says the all-powder formula may give less boost than triple-action pods. Hard-water homes may need a supplemental rinse aid.
Why we like it
- Food Network Kitchen’s best plant-based pick
- Free of phosphates and chlorine bleach, per Method
- Two tubs, 54 packs each
- Fragrance-free option
Key specifications
| Model | 10843536106078 |
|---|---|
| Format | Pack, single chamber |
| Count | 108 (2 tubs of 54) |
| Scent | Fragrance Free + Clear |
| Rinse help | Rinse-aid action, per listing |
| Free from, per maker | Phosphates, chlorine bleach |
| Certifications named | Not stated |
| Pre-rinse | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits people who want a plain, fragrance-free pack and use enough of them to justify two tubs.
Skip it if your water is very hard and you don’t want to add a rinse aid, based on Reviewed’s note.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Strong plant-based result at Food Network
- No fragrance
- Long-lasting supply
Cons
- Occasional spotting, per Reviewed
- Single chamber
- Two tubs is a lot of shelf space
7. Cascade Free & Clear Dishwasher Pods, Unscented, 62 Count – Cascade Without the Perfume

Strong scent is the main complaint about Cascade’s top pods. Free & Clear is the answer from the same maker: a dye-free liquid top with no chlorine bleach, phosphates or added perfume, according to the listing.
Cascade says it removes 24-hour stuck-on food with one wash, with no prewash or rewash. Like other ActionPacs, it uses enzymes and comes ready to use, with no unwrapping or measuring. It says the pods are approved by Roto-Rooter as safe for pipes.
The listing quotes a Wirecutter recommendation. We could not read that review ourselves, so we don’t rely on it, and this pick rests on Cascade’s listing details. A similar Free & Clear listing is scented with lemon essential oils, so check the title says Unscented when you buy.
Why we like it
- No dye in the liquid top, per Cascade
- No added perfume, per Cascade
- No prewash, per Cascade
- No wrapper to remove
Key specifications
| Model | P_7330 |
|---|---|
| Format | Pod, liquid top |
| Count | 62 |
| Scent | Unscented |
| Rinse help | Not stated |
| Free from, per maker | Dye in liquid top, chlorine bleach, phosphates, added perfume |
| Certifications named | Not stated |
| Pre-rinse | Not needed, per Cascade |
Why we recommend it

Skip it if you want independent results first. This one rests on the maker’s details.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Same brand, no added perfume
- No dye in the liquid top
- Ready to use
Cons
- No independent review read
- Listing is new
- Pod film material not described

8. Finish Quantum Dishwasher Pods, 84 Count – Reviewers Split on Glassware

Finish Quantum has three fast-dissolving chambers: powder to scrub, gel for grease and a Powerball for shine. Finish says they take on 24-hour dried-on stains and leave a virtually spot-free finish on wine glasses and stainless pans.
Food Network Kitchen called Finish Powerball Quantum best for glassware, with dishes, glasses and silverware coming out free of spots and streaks. GearLab saw it differently, finding visible residue on glassware, though its write-up is from 2024. Shop TODAY’s editor found more detergent residue in one test with a similar Quantum pod.
So try a small amount before you commit to a large box. Food Network also notes a very strong smell in the package, though the machine did not retain it, and GearLab mentions a very strong smell too.
Why we like it
- Three-chamber design, per Finish
- Food Network Kitchen’s pick for glassware
- No pre-rinse, per Finish
- Resealable package
Key specifications
| Model | 5170099889 |
|---|---|
| Format | Pod, three chambers |
| Count | 84 |
| Scent | Fresh Scent |
| Rinse help | Powerball for shine, per Finish |
| Free from, per maker | Not stated |
| Certifications named | Not stated |
| Pre-rinse | Not needed, per Finish |
Why we recommend it
It suits people who liked Finish in the past and want a step down from Ultimate, for regular loads of glasses and flatware.
Skip it if you have seen film on glasses before. Reviewers disagree here, and one found residue.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Good glassware result at Food Network
- Three chambers
- Large count
Cons
- GearLab saw residue on glassware
- Very strong smell, per two reviewers
- Reviewers disagree
9. Dropps UltraWash Dishwasher Pods, Unscented, 120 Count – Biobased Pods in a Big Box

Dropps sells its pods direct and on Amazon, and this 120-count box is the biggest pack on the page. The listing calls it an 81 percent USDA Biobased formula with enzymes and oxygen-based cleaning, with mineral water softeners to prevent spots. Dropps says you need no pre-wash or rinse aid.
Dropps says the pods work with all machines, cycles and water temperatures, and are made without dyes, sulfates, phosphates, chlorine, gluten, parabens and phthalates. It calls them septic safe and vegan.
Independent results are fair. Shop TODAY’s editor placed UltraWash seventh of ten, and Domino’s writer called Dropps pods great in 2022, in a different scent. The listing title says plastic free packaging, and it doesn’t describe the pod’s own film.
Why we like it
- Largest count on this page
- No rinse aid needed, per Dropps
- Unscented
- 81 percent USDA Biobased, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | 052721120826 |
|---|---|
| Format | Pod |
| Count | 120 |
| Scent | Unscented |
| Rinse help | Mineral water softeners, per Dropps |
| Free from, per maker | Dyes, sulfates, phosphates, chlorine, gluten, parabens, phthalates |
| Certifications named | USDA Biobased 81 percent, Leaping Bunny, B Corp |
| Pre-rinse | Not needed, per Dropps |

It suits households that run the dishwasher daily and want an unscented, biobased pod without reordering often.
Skip it if you want a top scorer. It sat mid-table in the one recent ranking we read.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Big box
- Unscented
- Works with all cycles, per Dropps
Cons
- Mid-table in Shop TODAY’s ranking
- Film material not described
- Fewer reviews than the big brands
How to choose dishwasher pods
Your dishwasher’s manual comes first. After that, most of the choice comes down to your water, your dishes and your nose.
Know your water
Reviewers tie film and spots to hard water. Finish, Cascade and Method all name hard water on their listings, and Reviewed says very hard water may still need a separate rinse aid, even with a good pod. Food Network Kitchen ran its test in New York City, where the water is not particularly hard, so hard-water homes should read that result with care.
Multi-chamber or single powder
Multi-chamber pods mix powder with a liquid or gel and often a rinse aid. Reviewed says an all-powder formula like Method’s may give less boost than triple-action pods. Plain powder packs and tablets can still do well on everyday loads.
Scent and dye
Strong scent is the most repeated complaint about the top conventional pods. If it bothers you, Seventh Generation, Method, Dropps and Cascade Free & Clear list fragrance-free or unscented versions. Read the title, since brands sell several scents under one name.

What goes in the machine
A pod only works on items that belong in the dishwasher. Finish names wine glasses and stainless steel pans, but makers of the other pods here don’t list specific surfaces, so go by each item’s own care instructions. Wooden boards, seasoned cast iron and hand-wash knives stay out unless their maker says otherwise.
Handle and store them properly
Package directions for Cascade pods, as shown by grocers, say to use dry hands, not to puncture or pull apart pods that are stuck together, to place one pod in the main dispenser and to reseal the bag and keep it in a cool, dry place. Follow the label on your own package, and keep the container closed and out of children’s reach.
How we chose these nine dishwasher pods
We looked for pods, packs and tablets from identifiable makers, in stock and sold new on Amazon. We left out gels, powders and dishwasher cleaners. We read the reviews from Reviewed, GearLab, Food Network Kitchen, Shop TODAY and Domino, and each listing, and noted their dates, since formulas change. Wirecutter’s page would not open for us, so we don’t use it, and we did not read Consumer Reports.
Amazon Basics is the one Amazon-first brand here. We searched the CPSC recall database by brand and by parent company. Some of those companies have recalled other products, but we found no recall of any dishwasher pod on this page. We have not used these products ourselves, and we make no health claims beyond what a maker states.
Dishwasher pod questions, answered
What are the best dishwasher pods?
Cascade Platinum Plus has the most agreement behind it. Reviewed and GearLab both name it best overall, and Food Network Kitchen picks it for tough loads.
Is dishwasher detergent in a pod better than gel?
In Food Network Kitchen’s test, liquids were eliminated in the first round and pods were the top performers. That was one test in one city, so treat it as a guide.
Do I need a rinse aid with pods?
Sometimes. Many pods include rinse help, but Reviewed says very hard water may still need a separate one. Dropps says its pods don’t.
Do I need to pre-rinse dishes?
Finish, Cascade and Amazon Basics say no. Reviewed advises pre-rinsing caked-on sauces with Seventh Generation.
Are dishwasher tablets the same as pods?
They do the same job. Blueland’s are pressed tablets with no film, while most pods are powder or gel in a dissolving wrap. Use one in the main dispenser, as your label directs.
Where do I put a dishwasher pod?
In the dishwasher’s detergent dispenser. Blueland, Amazon Basics and Cascade’s package directions all say so, and Cascade adds that your hands should be dry.
Our final pick for a clean load
Start with Cascade Platinum Plus, and switch to Seventh Generation or Cascade Free & Clear if the scent bothers you. For the things that don’t go in the machine, see our best dish rack guide, our dish drying mat picks and our dish towels guide.
