Flat, Upright or Weighted: The Best Napkin Holder for Your Table

Flat, upright or weighted: how to choose the best napkin holder for your table, from a review-winning OXO to a patio-ready Spectrum.

A table set for four, with a napkin at each place.

Tacos are a napkin food. So is most of what comes off a grill, and a stack of napkins sliding across the table is a small nuisance you deal with at every meal. A good holder keeps them in one place, lets people take one at a time and stays put when someone grabs in a hurry.

This guide covers holders for the home table and kitchen counter. The first thing to settle is the size of your napkins, because many holders fit only one size. Then choose flat or upright, and decide whether wind is part of the picture.

Quick verdict: which napkin holder to buy

For most tables, the pick is the OXO Good Grips Neat Napkin Holder: GearLab named it Best Overall, and it took every napkin size in that review. For a tension arm that gives you one napkin at a time, buy the simplehuman Quick Grip. For patios and cookouts, buy the Spectrum Euro Weighted Arm.

Our picks for the best napkin holder

The picks are in order of how well we think they suit most tables. We note where a pick rests on an independent review and where it rests on the listing.

1. OXO Good Grips Neat Napkin Holder – One Napkin at a Time, Any Size

Best overallOXO Good Grips Neat Napkin Holder

The Neat has the strongest independent backing of any holder we found. GearLab bought nine holders, compared them side by side with four napkin sizes and a box fan standing in for the wind, and named this one Best Overall. Its reviewer found that it fit every size and kept napkins in place in front of the fan while still letting them pull out easily.

It is an upright holder in stainless steel with a coating that the listing calls fingerprint-proof. A pinch at the top holds the stack, so you can take a single napkin even when the holder is nearly empty. The listing gives it as about 6.1 inches tall, 5.8 long and 3.8 wide, which is a small footprint for a table that also has to hold plates.

GearLab’s complaints were small ones: the look is plain, and its unit arrived with packaging glue that would not come off. If you want a holder that doubles as decoration, this is not it. For a table that sees tacos and greasy fingers several nights a week, plain and easy is what you want.

Why we like it

  • Named Best Overall by GearLab
  • Fit all four napkin sizes in that review
  • Stainless steel with a fingerprint-proof coating, per the listing
  • Small upright footprint

Key specifications

Model 13245100
Material Stainless steel, fingerprint-proof coating
Style Upright
Size 6.1 x 5.8 x 3.8 in, per the listing
Napkins Any size, per GearLab

Why we recommend it

If you want one holder that works with whatever napkins you happen to buy, this is the place to start. It suits everyday family tables and kitchen counters.

Skip it if you want the holder to add to the look of the table. GearLab calls it plain, and it is.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Takes any napkin size in GearLab’s review
  • Pulls napkins out singly
  • Small footprint

Cons

  • Plain looks
  • GearLab’s unit had stubborn packaging glue

2. simplehuman Quick Grip Napkin Holder – A Tension Arm with a 5-Year Warranty

Best tension armsimplehuman Quick Grip Napkin Holder

simplehuman takes the idea of a weighted arm and adds a spring. According to the listing, a weighted tension arm holds the stack down and lets one napkin pull free at a time, while rubber pads under the base keep the holder from sliding. It is made of stainless steel and comes with a 5-year warranty, the longest listed on this page.

The listing says it holds about 75 square paper napkins. BestReviews, which called it the easiest to use, thought the capacity was limited and that it may not work as well when napkins run low, so we would treat 75 as the top of the range. GearLab praised its effective clip and said napkins came away easily from any side because the design is open.

GearLab also points out the trade-offs. It takes square napkins of about 6.5 inches and smaller, its look is utilitarian, and it has more moving parts than a simple holder, which gives it more that could go wrong. It sits flat, so it covers more of the table than an upright model. The listing gives about 7.2 by 7.8 inches of footprint.

Why we like it

  • Weighted tension arm, per the listing
  • Rubber pads keep it from sliding
  • Stainless steel construction
  • 5-year warranty, per the listing

Key specifications

Model KT1076
Material Stainless steel
Style Flat, with arm
Size 7.2 x 7.8 x 5 in, per the listing
Napkins About 75 square napkins
Hold-down Weighted tension arm
Care Not stated
Warranty 5 years

Why we recommend it

If you like to take one napkin with one hand and hate a stack that follows it out, this is built for exactly that. The warranty is a good sign for something with a spring.

Skip it if you use rectangular or large dinner napkins. GearLab found it suits squares of about 6.5 inches and smaller.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • One napkin at a time
  • Long warranty
  • Stays put on smooth tables

Cons

  • Square napkins only, per GearLab
  • Takes up table space
  • More moving parts

3. OXO Good Grips Flat Napkin Holder – Folds Flat When Not in Use

Best flat holderOXO Good Grips Napkin Holder

OXO’s other napkin holder takes a flat approach. The napkins lie on a base with a rubber grip, and a weighted arm rests on top to keep them there. The arm opens wide and stays open, so you can refill the stack with one hand, and that is more useful than it sounds when you are setting a table with a stack of plates in the other.

Its best trick is storage: the arm folds flat into the base. The listing gives it as about 8 by 6.6 inches and 1.25 inches tall, which makes it the one holder here that can slide into a drawer or a picnic bag. If you only bring napkins out for company or the patio, you will appreciate that.

BestReviews describes it as stainless steel with a rubber base and calls it feature-packed, with one complaint: it is not the most attractive holder on the market. The listing does not say which napkin sizes it takes, so measure yours against the base before you buy.

Why we like it

  • Weighted arm holds the stack, per the listing
  • Arm stays open for one-handed refills
  • Folds flat for storage
  • Rubber grip stops the stack from sliding

Why we recommend it

If your table is cleared after every meal, or you carry napkins outside, this is the one that stores out of the way. It is a good second holder for a patio.

Skip it if you want a piece that looks good on an open counter all day. BestReviews says looks are its weak point.

Pros and cons

  • Folds flat
  • One-handed refilling
  • Non-slip grip

Cons

  • Plain looks, per BestReviews

4. Spectrum Euro Weighted Arm Napkin Holder – Made with Patio Breezes in Mind

Best for outdoor tablesSpectrum Euro Weighted Arm Napkin Holder for Kitchen Table

A breeze is what separates a good napkin holder from a bad one, and Spectrum designed this one with that in mind. The listing says its pivoting weighted arm keeps napkins in place on windy days, at picnics, cookouts and patio dinners. It is a flat square frame of thick-gauge steel with a satin nickel finish, measuring 7.5 inches square and 2.75 inches tall.

Spectrum says the frame takes both standard dinner napkins and cocktail napkins, so you do not need a second holder for parties. It also says the smooth welds keep paper from tearing or snagging. That is a real concern with shaped metal: GearLab found that the outer napkin sometimes caught in the swirls of a scrolled holder.

The details here come from the listing, because our search did not turn up an independent review of this exact model. Spectrum itself turns up in several roundups, and BestReviews names a different model, the Spectrum Vintage, as its top pick while warning buyers to check napkin size. If your cookouts run to tacos, our taco holders guide covers the plates.

Why we like it

  • Weighted arm made to resist wind, per the listing
  • Takes dinner and cocktail napkins
  • Thick-gauge steel frame
  • Smooth welds to avoid snagging

Key specifications

Model 28378
Material Steel, satin nickel finish
Style Flat, with arm
Size 7.5 x 7.5 x 2.75 in
Napkins Dinner and cocktail
Hold-down Pivoting weighted arm

Why we recommend it

If you eat outside often, this is the holder made for the job. A steel frame and a heavy arm are worth more on a patio than anything decorative.

Skip it if your table is small. A 7.5 inch square takes more room than any upright on this page.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Built for breezy tables
  • Holds two napkin sizes
  • Smooth welds

Cons

  • Large footprint
  • Rests on the listing, not a review of this model
  • Warranty not stated

5. Spectrum Pantry Works Upright Napkin Holder – A Weighted Base That Stays Upright

Best upright for countersSpectrum Pantry Works Upright Table Napkin Holder

Upright holders have one common failure: they tip when you pull from them. Spectrum’s answer is a weighted steel base with a slim arch above it, which the listing says spreads the mass evenly and keeps the holder stable. It measures 6.4 inches long, 4 inches wide and 8 inches tall, so it is tall but takes little counter space.

The listing says it takes standard cocktail, dinner and beverage napkins, and the open arch means anyone can grab one with a single hand. The satin nickel finish is meant to sit alongside stainless appliances and modern hardware, and the listing says it resists water spots and fingerprints. A wipe with a damp cloth is all the care it asks for.

It comes with a one-year warranty. There is no arm or clip, so this is an indoor piece: GearLab warned about the same thing with another clipless upright, saying it may not perform well outside on a windy day. Like the Euro, this pick rests on the listing and the maker’s details rather than a review of the model itself.

Why we like it

  • Weighted base to prevent tipping, per the listing
  • Takes cocktail, dinner and beverage napkins
  • Satin nickel finish resists water spots, per the listing
  • One-year warranty

Key specifications

Model 40878
Material Steel, satin nickel finish
Style Upright
Size 6.4 x 4 x 8 in
Napkins Cocktail, dinner, beverage
Hold-down None; weighted base
Care Damp cloth
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

If napkins live on your kitchen counter or island and everyone helps themselves, this is the simple choice. It suits a modern kitchen with stainless appliances.

Skip it if you plan to take it outside. With no clip or arm, wind can get at the stack.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Stable weighted base
  • Takes up little counter space
  • Takes several napkin sizes

Cons

  • No clip or arm
  • Tall for a dining table
  • Rests on the listing, not a review of this model

6. Umbra Swivel Napkin Holder – Arms That Close In as the Stack Shrinks

Best for small tablesUmbra Swivel Napkin Holder

Umbra’s Swivel solves a small annoyance: as the stack gets thinner, napkins in a fixed holder start to flop. Two soft-touch arms on a metal base move on a spring, widening for a full stack and closing in as it shrinks. The listing says the molding at the top keeps napkins from slipping.

The holder is small. Amazon gives the size as 4 by 4.5 inches, and another retailer lists about 4.5 by 3.25 by 5 inches, so it has the smallest footprint on this page and is a good fit for a bistro table or a narrow breakfast bar. Cleaning is a wipe with a damp cloth, and the listing shows a one-year limited warranty.

That size has a cost. In retailer reviews we saw, one buyer said it does not hold many napkins at one time and does not take large ones, while other buyers praised the look and the small footprint. Read that as a holder for the small square napkins of a two-person table, not for a family of six. The listing and those buyer comments are what this pick rests on.

Why we like it

  • Spring-loaded arms adjust to the stack
  • Smallest footprint on this page
  • Molded arms to limit slipping
  • Wipes clean with a damp cloth

Key specifications

Model 330705-047
Material Metal, molded arms
Style Upright, spring arms
Size 4 x 4.5 in, per the listing
Napkins Not stated
Hold-down Spring-loaded arms
Care Damp cloth
Warranty 1-year limited

Why we recommend it

If you have a small table and want something with a modern look, this holds what you need without crowding the plates.

Skip it if you feed a crowd or use large napkins. A buyer report says it holds few and that large ones do not fit.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Very compact
  • Adjusts as the stack shrinks
  • Modern look

Cons

  • Limited capacity, per a buyer report
  • Large napkins may not fit
  • Napkin sizes not stated in the listing

7. Umbra Bellwood Napkin Holder with Handle – Wood Accents and a Carry Handle

Best with a handleUmbra Bellwood Napkin Holder with Weight and Carrying Handle

The Bellwood is for a table where the holder should look like furniture. Umbra builds it from metal with real wood accents, and a wooden dowel sits on the stack to hold napkins down. An anti-slip grip on the base keeps the stack from shifting, and the listing says the design gives guests quick, one-at-a-time access.

The built-in handle is the feature that sets it apart. A holder you carry from counter to table to patio needs something to hold on to, and this one has it. The listing says it is part of Umbra’s Bellwood collection, which includes a matching paper towel holder, lazy Susan and storage pieces, so it can tie a kitchen together if you already own one of those. Our paper towel holder guide covers that side of the counter.

At about 9 by 7.9 by 5.1 inches in the listing, it has the largest dimensions on this page, and the listing says only that it holds standard napkins, so check your napkin size first. The listing title mentions a weight but gives no figure for it. It also shows a one-year limited warranty.

Why we like it

  • Real wood accents with a metal body, per the listing
  • Integrated handle for carrying
  • Wooden dowel holds the stack down
  • Anti-slip grip on the base

Key specifications

Model 1022631-668
Material Metal with real wood accents
Style Weighted, with handle
Size About 9 x 7.9 x 5.1 in, per the listing
Napkins Standard napkins
Hold-down Wooden dowel
Care Not stated
Warranty 1-year limited

Why we recommend it

If you carry napkins back and forth to the table or patio, and you want the holder to look warm rather than industrial, this is the most attractive practical pick.

Skip it if your table is small. It is the biggest holder here.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Carry handle
  • Warm wood detail
  • Matches other Bellwood pieces

Cons

  • Large footprint
  • Napkin range not specified beyond standard
  • Care not stated

8. Nambe Breeze Napkin Holder – A Serving Piece That Holds Napkins

Best for giftsnambe Breeze Napkin Holder

Nambe is a design-led tabletop brand, and the Breeze looks like a serving piece that happens to hold napkins. Designer Neil Cohen pairs an acacia wood base with stainless steel, and a moving arm lifts to let you load the stack and then settles on top to hold it. The listing says it is meant to keep napkins in place indoors or out.

It measures 9 inches long, 7.5 wide and 3 high, so it is a large tray-style piece rather than something tucked beside the salt. The care is the part to plan for: the listing says to hand wash it and dry it right away, as you should with most wood. It is not a holder to leave out in the rain.

We include it because a napkin holder makes a good housewarming or wedding gift, and most of the options are purely practical. As with several picks on this page, its place here rests on the listing and the maker’s details, not a review of this model. It would also sit well beside a good serving tray on a dressier table.

Why we like it

  • Acacia wood base with stainless steel
  • Designed by Neil Cohen, per the listing
  • Moving arm holds the stack in place
  • Looks at home on a dressed table

Key specifications

Model MT0781
Material Acacia wood, stainless steel
Style Flat, with arm
Size 9 x 7.5 x 3 in
Napkins Not stated
Hold-down Moving arm
Care Hand wash, dry immediately
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

If you are buying for someone else, or for a table where looks come first, this is the holder most likely to stay on display.

Skip it if you want something you can wipe down and forget. Wood asks for more care than steel.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Most decorative pick here
  • Mixed wood and steel
  • Arm suits outdoor meals too

Cons

  • Wood needs prompt drying
  • Large footprint
  • Napkin sizes not stated

How to choose a napkin holder for the table

The job is small, but holders fail in the same few ways: they tip, they let the stack blow away, or they do not fit the napkins you buy. A few questions will sort most of that out.

Start with your napkins

Measure them before you measure anything else. GearLab worked with four sizes, and several holders in its review took only squares of about 6.5 inches and smaller, while others took only rectangular napkins of about 4.5 by 8 inches. BestReviews gives the same warning: check that your napkins fit. If you switch between lunch and dinner napkins, buy a holder that names both.

Flat or upright

Flat holders are stable and hold a full stack, but they take up more of the table. Upright holders are easier to reach from every seat and use less space, but they rely on a heavy base to stay standing. For a small table, go upright. For a big one, or a patio, flat is often the better choice.

A restaurant table with folded orange napkins under a beamed ceiling
Napkins at each place take up less room than a holder, but need setting.

Think about wind and fans

Outdoors, a holder needs something on top of the stack. GearLab used a box fan to show how much that matters. One rectangular caddy failed outright, and the reviewer warned that a clipless upright that passed indoors may not do so well on a windy day. A weighted arm such as the one on the Spectrum Euro is what you want for a patio. A ceiling fan indoors can have the same effect.

Check how it refills

You will refill a holder often, and usually with your hands full. An arm that stays open, like the one on the OXO flat holder, makes that a one-handed job. Check that the arm or clip is not so tight that the top napkin tears as you pull it out, and look for smooth joins that will not snag paper.

Match the material to the room

Steel wipes clean and survives a busy table. Wood looks warmer but asks for more care, and it should be dried promptly. Think about where the holder will sit, too. A holder next to the stove will collect grease, so choose something that wipes down easily. For the rest of the table, see our guides to placemats and napkin rings.

How we chose these eight holders

We have not used these holders ourselves. We started with what a busy table needs: napkins that stay put, come out one at a time and do not take over the space. We looked at napkin holders sold on Amazon in the United States by identifiable makers, and checked that each was in stock with a new lead offer.

Two reviews shaped the list. GearLab bought and compared nine holders, and its page was last updated in April 2023. BestReviews also covers the category, though its page dates its review to 2021. GearLab covers the OXO Neat and the simplehuman, and BestReviews covers the OXO flat holder and the simplehuman. The Spectrum, Umbra and Nambe picks rest on the listings and maker details, along with buyer comments for the Umbra Swivel, and we say so in each write-up.

We left out holders that were low in stock, including models from Lipper and iDesign, and we passed on commercial dispensers because they suit a diner counter more than a home table. We also skipped many near-identical holders from little-known sellers.

Napkin holder questions, answered

What is the best napkin holder for a table?

For most homes, the OXO Good Grips Neat. GearLab named it Best Overall, and it took every napkin size in that review. For a table with more room, a flat holder with an arm is a good alternative.

What is the best napkin holder for outdoor use?

Choose one with a weighted arm. The Spectrum Euro is made for picnics and patios, according to its listing. The OXO flat holder’s weighted arm also holds the stack down, and it folds flat for carrying.

Will a napkin holder fit dinner napkins?

Some will and some will not. The Spectrum Euro listing names dinner napkins, and GearLab found the OXO Neat fits any size. Measure a folded napkin and compare it with the inside of the holder, since listings often give only outside dimensions.

How many napkins should a holder hold?

Enough for a day or two of meals. simplehuman’s listing says about 75 square napkins, though BestReviews thought its capacity was limited, so treat any figure as a maximum. A small upright such as the Umbra Swivel holds fewer.

How do I clean a napkin holder?

A damp cloth does the job on most steel holders, and the Spectrum Pantry Works and Umbra Swivel listings say the same. Dry wood right away. The Nambe listing says to hand wash it and dry it immediately.

The holder we would put on the table first

Start with the OXO Neat for everyday meals, the simplehuman if you want a tension arm and a long warranty, or the Spectrum Euro if you eat outside. Once the napkins are sorted, the next thing on the table is food: our guide to the best serving bowls covers what to put it in, and our cloth napkins guide is there for nights when paper will not do.
