Tension Arm or Tear Bar? The Best Paper Towel Holder Countertop

Eight freestanding paper towel holders compared on one-handed tearing, weighted bases, jumbo rolls and finish, from simplehuman, Spectrum and more.

A white kitchen counter with a wooden cutting board, a small canister and a checked towel hanging on the wall
A clear stretch of counter with a cutting board and a hanging towel.

On a Mexican kitchen counter the paper towel roll stands next to the stove for a reason. It lines the tray where taquitos drain, blots the oil off a batch of chiles rellenos, wipes masa off the tortilla press and catches the salsa that runs off the cutting board. A countertop holder lets you carry the roll to the mess, and a good one hands you a sheet when your other hand is holding tongs.

This guide covers freestanding holders only: eight countertop models from simplehuman, Spectrum, KitchenAid, blomus, Umbra and Lipper. Our main best paper towel holder guide covers the wall and under-cabinet options and a different set of countertop picks, so none of those listings repeat here. Specifications come from the makers’ Amazon listings, and we quote America’s Test Kitchen’s paper towel holder review where it applies.

Quick verdict: the countertop holder to buy

Buy the simplehuman Tension Arm Paper Towel Holder in matte black. It is the same tension-arm design that won America’s Test Kitchen’s review, where “even one-handed, testers were able to pull off small and large quantities of sheets neatly and easily.” If you buy jumbo rolls, choose the Spectrum Euro Paper Towel Holder, which Spectrum says fits standard and jumbo rolls. For a spray bottle and towels in one footprint, the simplehuman Paper Towel Holder with Spray; for brass hardware, the Spectrum Euro with Easy Tear Arm in gold; and for wood, the Lipper Acacia Wood Paper Towel Holder.

If the roll near your stove is mostly for frying, our guide to the best deep fryer covers the rest of that setup.

Our picks for the best paper towel holder countertop

These eight freestanding holders cover the ways a countertop model can stop the roll from spinning: a tension arm, a side arm, a tear bar, a friction pad, or just a weighted base. Each pick says who it suits and gives one honest reason to skip it.

1. simplehuman Tension Arm Paper Towel Holder, Matte Black – One Hand, One Clean Sheet

Best overallsimplehuman Tension Arm Countertop Paper Towel Holder

This is the one exception to our no-repeats rule, and it is a deliberate one. Our main guide picks this holder in brushed stainless steel; this is the matte black version, a separate listing, because the tension-arm design is still the best countertop holder we found evidence for, and many kitchens now have black appliances and hardware. America’s Test Kitchen named simplehuman’s Tension Arm holder its winner, writing that “even one-handed, testers were able to pull off small and large quantities of sheets neatly and easily,” and that it was “sturdy, secure, and easy to carry.”

simplehuman says the precision-tuned tension arm lets you tear one-handed “without the roll unraveling or spinning loose,” and that the weighted base keeps it from sliding across the counter. ATK weighed the model it tested at 2 pounds 6¾ ounces, well over the 1.75 pounds it advises as a minimum. A finger loop on the arm lets you lift the holder and carry it to the spill, and ATK liked that the top stays attached when you swap rolls.

The listing says it fits standard 11-inch rolls and gives no dimensions or warranty. ATK tested an earlier model number (KT1161); this listing is KT1204, which simplehuman describes with the same tension arm, weighted base and finger loop.

Why we like it

  • Same design as ATK’s winning holder
  • Tension arm stops the roll spinning, per simplehuman
  • Weighted base; tested model weighed over 2 lb (ATK)
  • Finger loop for carrying

Key specifications

Model KT1204 (matte black)
Tear method Tension arm; one hand
Fits jumbo rolls Standard 11-in rolls (maker); “rolls of all sizes” per ATK
Material Steel, matte black finish
Weighted base Yes (maker)
Carry handle Finger loop on the arm
Size Not stated in the listing
Warranty Not stated in the listing

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you want the most proven one-handed countertop holder in a black finish.

Skip it if you already own the brushed steel version from our main guide; this is the same holder in another color.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Clean one-handed tears in ATK’s review
  • Heavy and steady
  • Easy roll changes

Cons

  • Maker lists standard rolls only
  • No size or warranty in the listing
  • Costs more than most

2. simplehuman Paper Towel Holder with Spray – Towels and Cleaner Together

Best with a spraysimplehuman Paper Towel Holder with Spray

This simplehuman holder adds a 6-ounce spray pump to the post, so the cleaner and the towels sit in one footprint. simplehuman says the wide refill opening takes any kitchen cleaner, so you can fill it from a bulk bottle, and the pump gives an even mist for counters, stovetops and appliances.

The towel side works like simplehuman’s other countertop holder: a tension arm for one-handed tearing without the roll unraveling, a weighted base, and a finger loop to carry the whole thing to the mess. That last part is the selling point after a night of frying, when the stovetop and the backsplash both need a wipe. This version is brushed stainless steel; simplehuman also lists black and brass.

The listing does not say which roll sizes fit or give dimensions, and no independent review covers it; America’s Test Kitchen’s review predates it. Whatever you put in the pump, follow the cleaner’s own label for kitchen surfaces.

Why we like it

  • Built-in 6 oz refillable spray pump
  • Takes any kitchen cleaner, per simplehuman
  • Tension arm for one-handed tearing
  • Finger loop carries towels and spray together

Key specifications

Model KT1196 (brushed stainless)
Tear method Tension arm; one hand
Fits jumbo rolls Not stated
Material Steel, brushed stainless finish
Weighted base Yes (maker)
Carry handle Finger loop
Size Not stated in the listing
Warranty Not stated in the listing

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you keep a spray bottle next to the paper towels anyway and want one less thing on the counter.

Skip it if you only need towels; the plain tension-arm holder above does that job with fewer parts.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Two tools in one footprint
  • Refill with any cleaner
  • One-handed tear

Cons

  • Roll size not stated
  • Pump is one more part to keep clean

3. Spectrum Euro Paper Towel Holder with Easy Tear Arm, Gold – Brass Tones, Big Rolls

Best gold finishSpectrum Euro Countertop Paper Towel Holder with Easy Tear Arm

Spectrum’s Euro holder is a solid steel wire frame on a weighted base, and this version adds an easy-tear arm that, according to Spectrum, lets you take a towel with one hand while the other is busy stirring or flipping. The gold finish is meant to go with brass cabinet hardware and warm-toned kitchens.

Spectrum gives the size as 12.5 inches high by 7.2 inches wide and deep, and says it fits both standard and jumbo rolls. It has a looped center rod, per the listing. Care is a wipe with a damp cloth, then towel dry, per the listing. Spectrum sells matching pieces in its Euro Gold countertop collection.

The listing does not give the weight or a warranty, and America’s Test Kitchen did not test it. If you want gold and the steadiest base, simplehuman also sells its tension-arm holder in a brass finish, which our main guide mentions.

Why we like it

  • Easy-tear arm for one-handed use, per Spectrum
  • Standard and jumbo rolls fit
  • Weighted base
  • Gold finish with matching collection pieces

Key specifications

Model 1000438

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you want a gold holder that takes jumbo rolls and still tears with one hand.

Skip it if your hardware is stainless or black; the finish is the main reason to buy it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Jumbo rolls fit
  • Clear dimensions
  • Matching collection

Cons

  • Weight not stated
  • No independent review found

4. KitchenAid Stainless Steel Paper Towel Holder – A Friction Pad and a Tear Bar

Best tear barKitchenAid Stainless Steel Paper Towel Holder

KitchenAid’s holder takes a different approach to stopping the roll spinning. A soft-touch friction pad on the base presses against the bottom of the roll so the towels stay in place without unraveling, according to KitchenAid, and a stainless steel tear bar gives you an edge to tear against.

The roll slides on and off with no end cap to remove, and the weighted base keeps it stable while you tear, per the listing. The finish is brushed stainless steel with matte black accents from KitchenAid’s color range palette. The listing gives the size as 13 inches.

KitchenAid does not say whether jumbo rolls fit or how heavy the base is, and America’s Test Kitchen did not test it. A tear bar works best when you pull the sheet against it at an angle; it is a little less automatic than a tension arm.

Why we like it

  • Friction pad stops unraveling, per KitchenAid
  • Stainless steel tear bar
  • No end cap to remove for refills
  • Weighted base

Key specifications

Model KE950MLBAA (listing)
Tear method Friction pad and tear bar

5. blomus Loop Paper Towel Holder – A Tall, Weighted Steel Stand

Best designblomus LOOP Paper Towel Holder Moonbeam (cream)

The blomus Loop holder is a single curved line of powder-coated steel on a round base. The listing says the stainless steel base is weighted and has a rubber coating underneath for stability, and that “the paper can be peeled off with just one hand.”

It stands about 34 centimeters (a little over 13 inches) tall on a 15-centimeter base (about 6 inches), per the listing, and this one is in the cream color blomus calls Moonbeam. The listing also mentions “sharkskin” in its box details, so check the photos for the color you want before ordering. blomus gives a two-year warranty against manufacturing defects, per the listing.

The listing does not describe a tension arm or tear bar, does not say whether jumbo rolls fit and gives no weight. America’s Test Kitchen did not test it. Buy it for its looks and the weighted, rubber-footed base.

Why we like it

  • Weighted stainless steel base, per the listing
  • Rubber coating under the base
  • Powder-coated steel frame
  • Two-year warranty, per the listing

Key specifications

Model 64365 (Moonbeam)

  • Two-year warranty
  • Distinctive design

Cons

  • Color details in the listing conflict
  • No tear aid described

6. Umbra Squire Paper Towel Holder – Compact, With a Handle and Tear Bar

Best compactUmbra Squire Paper Towel Holder

Umbra’s Squire is a holder made from one continuous square-section steel wire, bent so it has, in Umbra’s words, “the look of cast iron.” That suits a kitchen with a cast iron comal hanging on the wall and black hardware. A built-in tear bar gives the sheet something to tear against, and the top bends into a handle so you can carry it to the table.

It is compact: 6½ inches across and 12¾ inches tall, according to Umbra, which makes it one of the slimmer holders here for a crowded counter between the stove and the cutting board. Umbra gives a one-year limited warranty, per the listing.

Umbra does not say whether the base is weighted or whether jumbo rolls fit, and America’s Test Kitchen’s buying advice is to look for holders of at least 1.75 pounds, because lighter ones slid and tipped in its review. Treat this as a light holder and pull at an angle against the tear bar. The Amazon listing also calls it a napkin holder in one line, which looks like a copy error.

Why we like it

  • Built-in tear bar, per Umbra
  • Handle at the top for carrying
  • Compact footprint
  • One-year limited warranty, per the listing

Key specifications

Model 1004313-040 (black)
Tear method Tear bar
Fits jumbo rolls Not stated
Material Steel, black finish
Weighted base Not stated
Carry handle Yes, built in
Size 6½ in diameter x 12¾ in (maker)

Why we recommend it

Choose it if counter space is tight and you like a dark, iron-look finish.

Skip it if you want a heavy base; Umbra does not say it is weighted.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Small footprint
  • Tear bar and handle
  • Warranty stated

Cons

  • Weight not stated
  • Jumbo fit not stated

7. Umbra Buddy Paper Towel Holder, White – Soft Tension in a Light Holder

Best lightweightUmbra Buddy Countertop Paper Towel Holder

Umbra’s Buddy is a molded soft-touch polypropylene holder on a metal post. Umbra says the molded body “applies just enough tension” to a standard roll for an easy one-handed tear, so the tension is built into the shape rather than a separate arm.

It stands 12½ inches tall with a 7-inch diameter, according to Umbra, and it wipes clean with a damp cloth. Refilling is just a matter of dropping a roll over the post. The white color is the one in stock as we write; the black version was showing limited stock. Umbra gives a one-year limited warranty, per the listing.

Umbra calls it “sturdy yet light-weight,” and the title says it fits standard rolls, so do not expect it to take jumbo ones. Because America’s Test Kitchen found that light holders tended to slide, the Buddy suits a low-traffic spot, like a breakfast nook or a laundry room, better than the counter beside the fryer.

Why we like it

  • Built-in tension for one-handed tearing, per Umbra
  • Soft-touch, wipe-clean body
  • Quick drop-on refills
  • One-year limited warranty, per the listing

Key specifications

Model 1019271-660 (white)
Tear method Molded body applies tension; one hand (maker)
Fits jumbo rolls Standard rolls (maker)
Material Polypropylene and metal
Weighted base Not stated; “light-weight” (maker)
Carry handle Not stated
Size 12½ in tall, 7 in diameter (maker)
Warranty One-year limited (listing)

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you want a cheerful, easy-to-clean holder for a quieter corner of the house.

Skip it if it will live next to the stove; a heavier holder will stay put better.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • One-handed tear without an arm
  • Wipes clean
  • Warranty stated

Cons

  • Light, by the maker’s own description
  • Standard rolls only

8. Lipper Acacia Wood Paper Towel Holder – Plain Wood on the Counter

Best woodLipper International 1138 Acacia Wood Standing Paper Towel Holder

Lipper International’s holder is about as simple as a paper towel holder gets: an acacia wood base and post, 7⅛ inches across and 14¼ inches tall, per the listing. It comes fully assembled. In a kitchen with wooden spoons in a crock, or open wood shelves, it fits in where steel can look cold.

The listing calls it portable and compact. The wide base gives it a broad footprint, but Lipper does not give a weight, so we cannot say whether it meets America’s Test Kitchen’s 1.75-pound guideline. Wood should be wiped dry rather than soaked; keep it away from the sink’s splash zone.

There is no tension arm, ratchet or tear bar described, so the roll turns freely and you will usually steady it with a second hand. Lipper does not say whether jumbo rolls fit. America’s Test Kitchen did not test it.

Why we like it

  • Acacia wood, per Lipper
  • Wide 7⅛-inch base
  • Comes fully assembled
  • Clear dimensions

Key specifications

Model 1138
Tear method Not stated; free-turning post
Fits jumbo rolls Not stated
Material Acacia wood
Weighted base Not stated
Carry handle Not stated
Size 7⅛ in diameter x 14¼ in tall (listing)
Warranty Not stated in the listing

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you want a plain natural wood holder.

Skip it if you tear towels one-handed at the stove; nothing stops the roll spinning.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Warm wood look
  • Wide, stable footprint
  • No assembly

Cons

  • No tear aid
  • Wood needs keeping dry

How to choose a countertop paper towel holder

Something has to stop the roll spinning

On a freestanding holder, the roll wants to spin when you pull. Makers solve that in different ways: a hinged tension arm (simplehuman), a side arm (Spectrum), a friction pad (KitchenAid), a tear bar (KitchenAid and Umbra Squire) or tension molded into the body (Umbra Buddy). America’s Test Kitchen prefers “flexible tension arms, which are angled and hinged so they can automatically adapt” to the roll. A plain post, like the Lipper, usually needs two hands.

Weight matters more on the counter than anywhere else

A countertop holder has nothing holding it down but its own base. ATK’s advice is to “look for models that are at least 1.75 pounds or more,” because lighter holders slid and tipped in its review. Most makers here say “weighted” without giving a number, so treat the lighter-sounding holders as better for a dining table or a pantry than for the fry station.

Three white paper rolls stacked against a white wall
White paper rolls stacked against a wall.

Measure the roll you actually buy

Jumbo and “mega” rolls are wider than standard ones. ATK found that holders with at least 3¼ inches of clearance between the center pole and the arm fit large rolls more easily. Spectrum says its holder takes jumbo rolls; simplehuman lists standard 11-inch rolls; several others do not say. If you buy by the case, match the holder to the roll.

A handle you can grab with a greasy hand

The advantage of a countertop holder over a mounted one is that it travels. A finger loop, looped rod or top handle lets you carry the roll to a spill or to the plate of draining flautas. ATK also marked down holders whose knobs had to come off for every roll change; most of the picks here slide the roll on and off without removing anything.

Footprint and finish

Measure the gap you have. The compact Umbra Squire is 6½ inches across; the Spectrum Euro is 7.2 inches square. For finish, brushed steel hides fingerprints, matte black suits dark appliances, the Spectrum comes in gold, and the Lipper is wood. Steel and powder-coated holders wipe clean with a damp cloth; wood should be kept dry.

How we chose these eight countertop holders

We started with America’s Test Kitchen’s review of paper towel holders, which named the simplehuman Tension Arm holder its winner. Because our main paper towel holder guide already recommends five countertop holders, we used none of those listings here except one: the simplehuman tension-arm holder in matte black, a separate listing, because the design is the best-supported countertop holder and the finish answers a common request. We then looked at countertop models from established makers (Kamenstein, Spectrum, KitchenAid, blomus, Umbra and Lipper) and read each listing for tear method, roll size, base and warranty. Every pick was in stock on Amazon when we checked, and we searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall database for each brand and found no recalls of paper towel holders.

We left out the Umbra Tug and Buddy in black, both showing limited or no stock, Brabantia’s and Joseph Joseph’s countertop holders for the same reason, a YAMAZAKI kitchen paper holder sized for smaller rolls with very little listing detail, and many unbranded listings. We have not used these holders ourselves, and apart from ATK we did not rely on any outside review.

Countertop paper towel holder questions, answered

What is the best countertop paper towel holder?

For most kitchens, a weighted holder with a tension arm, like the simplehuman Tension Arm, which won America’s Test Kitchen’s review. If you buy jumbo rolls, the Spectrum Euro is the alternative, since Spectrum says it fits them.

Is a countertop paper towel holder better than one under the cabinet?

A countertop holder can go wherever the mess is and needs no drilling; a mounted one keeps the counter clear. If you fry often, a countertop holder you can set beside the draining tray is the more useful of the two. Our main guide covers the mounted kind.

How heavy should a countertop paper towel holder be?

America’s Test Kitchen recommends at least 1.75 pounds. Few makers publish a weight, so look for “weighted base” in the listing and a wide footprint.

Do countertop holders fit jumbo rolls?

Some do. Spectrum says its holder takes jumbo rolls; simplehuman lists standard 11-inch rolls for its tension-arm holder; Umbra lists standard rolls for the Buddy. Where a listing is silent, we say “Not stated” in the specifications.

How do I clean a paper towel holder?

Spectrum and Umbra recommend a damp cloth; dry steel finishes afterwards so water spots do not build up. Keep wood holders dry, and for the simplehuman spray model, follow the label of whatever cleaner you put in the pump.

Choose the simplehuman Tension Arm Paper Towel Holder in matte black for clean one-handed tears and a heavy base, or the Spectrum Euro if you buy jumbo rolls.
