3×5 or 4×6? How to Pick the Best Recipe Box

The best recipe box starts with your card size. We compare seven wood, enamel and linen boxes, what comes inside, and who each one suits.

A recipe box looks like the simplest thing in the kitchen, and most of them are. The one real mistake is buying a box that doesn’t fit your cards. Others are about what you plan to do with it: keep a family collection safe, cook from it at the counter, or give it as a gift.

This guide compares seven boxes, says which card size each one takes, and notes what comes in the box. Independent reviews are scarce for such a small item, so we say where a pick rests only on what the listing tells us.

Quick verdict: which recipe box to buy

Buy the Ironwood Gourmet Acacia 2 Compartment if you have cards in both sizes, or may later. Choose the C.R. Gibson Savory Eats if you are starting from nothing and want cards and dividers included, and the Mud Pie box if it’s a gift.

Our picks for the best recipe box

Two of the seven come from Ironwood Gourmet, because they are different shapes for different card sizes. Two are from Amazon-first brands, and we say which. Otherwise we stuck to makers we could identify, and to listings in plain stock.

1. Ironwood Gourmet Acacia Recipe Box, 2 Compartment – Takes Either Card Size

Best overallIronwood Gourmet Acacia Wood Recipe Box with Divider Tabs

The size question is the one that catches most people out with a recipe box, and this box answers it best. Ironwood Gourmet says it takes both 3×5 and 4×6 cards, which is useful if your collection is a mix of an aunt’s old index cards and newer ones you’ve printed.

It is made of acacia wood and measures 7 inches wide, 6 deep and 5.5 tall. Inside are two compartments, each 6.25 inches wide and 2.5 deep, with 10 divider tabs to sort them. The lid has a groove on top, so you can stand a card up in front of you while you cook. Care is simple: wipe it with a damp cloth, dry it right away and don’t soak it. The maker suggests butcher block or mineral oil to keep the wood from drying out.

Sous Vide Guy, a site that earns from Amazon links, named this box its best sustainably sourced wood pick in a 2021 roundup. It points out two limits: the center divider can’t be taken out, and no recipe cards come with it. The fixed divider matters if you have a lot of oversize clippings, because neither compartment is especially wide from front to back.

This was the only independent write-up of any pick here that we could read. It was sold by Amazon when we checked.

Why we like it

  • Takes 3×5 and 4×6 cards, per the listing
  • Two compartments and 10 divider tabs
  • Grooved lid holds a card while you cook
  • Acacia wood; simple care

Card size 3×5 or 4×6
Material Acacia wood
Outside size 7 x 6 x 5.5 inches
Cards included None (Sous Vide Guy)

Why we recommend it

It suits most cooks, especially anyone with cards in both sizes who wants a box that looks at home on the counter.

Cons

2. C.R. Gibson Savory Eats Recipe File Box – Cards and Tabs in the Box

Best starter setC.R. Gibson Colorful Patterned Recipe File Box

C.R. Gibson is a long-running stationery name, and this file box is the most complete starting kit from an established maker here. You get 12 tabbed divider cards sorted by recipe type, plus 40 coordinating 4×6 recipe cards, lined on both sides. Open it and you can start copying recipes that night.

The box measures 6.5 inches wide, 4.75 tall and 4.25 deep. It is part of a patterned collection called Savory Eats, with matching cards and organizers sold separately, so it’s easy to add more of the same look later.

The listing doesn’t give the material or describe the lid. So don’t assume it will stand up to splashes in the way wood or enamel might, and if your box will sit right beside the stove, look at the wooden or enamel picks instead. It was sold by a third-party seller, Indulgory, when we checked, and we found no independent review of this box that we could rely on, so this rests on the listing and on the maker’s name.

A similar C.R. Gibson tin set was short on stock when we checked, so we did not include it.

Why we like it

  • 12 tabbed dividers sorted by recipe type
  • 40 lined 4×6 cards
  • Matching cards sold in the same collection

Key specifications

Model Q2-12505
Card size 4×6
Material Not stated
Outside size 6.5 x 4.25 x 4.75 inches
Cards included 40
Dividers 12 tabbed

Why we recommend it

It suits someone starting a recipe collection from scratch, and it works well as a gift for a new cook.

Skip it if the box will sit near steam or splashes. The material isn’t stated, so pick wood or enamel.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Ready to use
  • Established stationery maker
  • Room to add matching cards

Cons

  • Material not stated
  • Third-party seller when we checked
  • Patterned look won’t suit every kitchen

3. Ironwood Gourmet Acacia Recipe Box, Long 3×5 – Long Box for Index Cards

Best for 3×5 cardsIronwood Gourmet Acacia Wood Recipe Box

This is a different shape from the other Ironwood box, and it does a different job. Instead of a compact cube, it’s long and low, at about 11.4 inches wide, 4.5 deep and 4.25 tall. Two compartments sit side by side, each 5 inches wide, and the lid has the same groove for holding a card up.

The important limit is that it is made for 3×5 cards. Older family recipes are often on that size, so if you’ve inherited a stack, this keeps them together without loose space. Newer 4×6 cards won’t fit. Because the box is low, the cards are easy to thumb through from above, though it takes up more counter or shelf width than the 7-inch box.

Ironwood says to wipe it with a damp cloth, dry it immediately and never soak it, and it recommends butcher block or mineral oil to keep the wood from drying out. The listing also has an odd note saying that the plastic bag that holds the cards must be removed before they will fit. It doesn’t say how many cards are included, if any, so we’ve listed that as not stated.

We found no independent review of this box that we could read.

Why we like it

  • Made for 3×5 index cards
  • Side-by-side compartments
  • Grooved lid
  • Acacia wood

Key specifications

Model 28359
Card size 3×5 only
Material Acacia wood
Outside size 11.375 x 4.5 x 4.25 inches
Cards included Not stated clearly
Dividers Two compartments; tabs not stated
Lid Grooved
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone keeping a collection of older 3×5 cards, and anyone with a long, shallow shelf.

Skip it if you use or plan to print 4×6 cards. They won’t fit, so buy the two-compartment Ironwood above.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Right size for inherited cards
  • Easy to thumb through
  • Grooved lid

Cons

  • 3×5 cards only
  • Wide footprint
  • Listing is unclear on cards

4. MacKenzie-Childs Courtly Check Enamel Recipe Box – A Decorative Box From a Known Maker

Best decorative boxMACKENZIE-CHILDS Enamel Recipe Box

MacKenzie-Childs is a New York home-goods maker known for its hand-painted black-and-white check. This recipe box is part of that line. On its own site, the maker describes a hand-glazed, heavy-gauge steel body with hand-painted Courtly Check decoration and brass accents, and the Amazon listing adds a glass lid knob.

It comes with recipe cards and dividers. The Amazon listing says 40 cards and 5 dividers. The maker gives the box as 8 inches wide, 6.5 long and 7.5 tall, which makes it the biggest footprint of the small boxes here. Neither the maker nor the listing states the card size, so check that the cards you own will fit before you buy.

MacKenzie-Childs says to wipe it with a soft, damp cloth, hand-wash with mild soap if needed and dry it right away, and notes that handmade pieces may vary. It was sold by MacKenzie-Childs itself when we checked. We read no independent review of it.

Why we like it

  • Enamel on steel wipes clean
  • 40 cards and 5 dividers, per the listing
  • Care instructions from the maker
  • Sold by the maker at last check

Key specifications

Model 89412-40

Material Enamel on heavy-gauge steel
Outside size 8 x 6.5 x 7.5 inches
Cards included 40, per the listing
Dividers 5, per the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits someone who wants the box to stay out on the counter as a piece of decor, or who already collects the Courtly Check pattern.

Skip it if you need a box that is sure to take your card size. The Ironwood boxes state theirs.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Identifiable maker with its own care guide
  • Cards and dividers included
  • Hard surface for the counter

Cons

  • Card size not stated
  • Larger than most here
  • No grooved lid listed

5. Tidita Large Acacia Recipe Box – The Most Room Here

Best for big collectionsTIDITA Large Wooden Recipe Box with Recipe Cards & Dividers

When a collection has outgrown a normal box, length is what you need. This acacia box is the largest here, at 13.5 inches long, 6 wide and 5.1 tall, and it has two compartments. It comes with 100 index cards and 8 dividers. The groove on top holds 2 to 3 cards at once, which is more convenient than one if you are following a main and a side.

Tidita is an Amazon-first brand, and the listing is mostly sales copy. It says the cards are thick uncoated stock and that they are smear-proof and will stay legible for decades, which is the seller’s claim and can’t be checked from here. It also says it’s 100% acacia. Uncoated paper is generally easy to write on, in our view, but take any promise about decades lightly.

The listing doesn’t state a capacity figure for this large box. Its smaller sibling claims over 350 cards at about half the length, which at least gives you a sense of scale. We found no independent review of it that we could read. Before buying, measure your shelf, because a box this long will not fit where a standard one will.

Why we like it

  • Longest box on this page
  • 100 cards and 8 dividers included
  • Lid groove holds 2 to 3 cards
  • Two compartments

Key specifications

Model Recipe Large
Card size 4×6
Material Acacia wood
Outside size 13.5 x 6 x 5.1 inches
Cards included 100
Dividers 8
Lid Grooved
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits serious collectors, a family gathering recipes from several households, and anyone who wants all their cards in one box.

Skip it if counter space is tight. It is nearly twice as long as a standard box.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Lots of room
  • Cards and dividers included
  • Holds more than one card up

Cons

  • Amazon-first brand
  • Takes up a lot of shelf
  • Capacity figure not stated

6. Zicoto Recipe Box With Wooden Lid – Labeled Dividers, 50 Cards

Best for sortingZICOTO Beautiful Recipe Box with Wooden Lid - Incl. 50 4x6 Recipe Cards

Zicoto’s box puts its effort into sorting. You get 15 labeled dividers and 6 customizable ones, the most on this page, plus 50 4×6 recipe cards. If you want to open the box and find a ready-made place for soups, sides or desserts, this does the most of that work for you.

The outside is sage linen with a wooden lid, measuring 6.3 by 5.2 by 5 inches, and the maker says it holds up to 250 cards. Linen looks handsome on a shelf, but it is a cloth surface. So we would keep this one out of the splash zone, since fabric won’t wipe down in the same way as wood or bamboo. Zicoto also makes a version of this box without a wooden lid or cards, and we think this set is the better buy for most people.

Zicoto is an Amazon-first brand, and the listing is all from the seller. We found no independent review of it that we could read. It was sold by Zicoto’s own US storefront when we checked. The same box appears under other listings as well, so check you have the color and version you want.

Why we like it

  • 21 dividers, 15 of them labeled
  • 50 4×6 cards included
  • Holds up to 250 cards, per the maker
  • Wooden lid on a linen box

Key specifications

Model zic-recipebox2-sag_26-046a
Card size 4×6
Material Linen exterior, wooden lid
Outside size 6.3 x 5.2 x 5 inches
Cards included 50
Dividers 15 labeled, 6 customizable
Lid Wooden
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits someone who likes a labeled system from the start and wants a box that reads as decor as much as storage.

Skip it if it will live next to the stove. A linen box won’t wipe clean like the wooden ones.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Most dividers here
  • Comes ready to use
  • Looks good on a shelf

Cons

  • Fabric exterior near food and steam
  • Amazon-first brand
  • No independent review read

7. Mud Pie Mango Wood Recipe Box – A Keepsake With a Glass Knob

Best as a giftMud Pie Wood Recipe Box with Cards

This is more keepsake than filing system. Mud Pie’s small mango wood box has a hinged lid with a vintage style glass door knob and an etched sentiment on the wood. It comes with 10 kraft recipe cards, and it reads as a present for a bridal shower or a new home, which is how the listing pitches it.

Pay attention to the size, as it’s the catch. The box is 4.5 by 6.5 inches and holds 3.5 by 5.5 inch cards, which is neither of the two common sizes. Standard 4×6 cards are likely too big for a box this size, and 3×5 cards should fit but sit a little loose. If the person you are giving it to already owns a stack of 4×6 cards, this isn’t the box for them.

The other limit is space. Ten cards is a small start, and the listing states no dividers and no capacity. So treat it as a small box for a few favorite recipes, or fill it before you give it. A nice touch, the listing suggests, is having friends and family write recipes on the cards. It was sold by a third-party seller, Hour Loop, when we checked, and we found no independent review to read.

Why we like it

  • Hinged lid with a glass knob
  • Etched sentiment on mango wood
  • 10 kraft cards to start
  • Sized for a small shelf

Key specifications

Card size 3.5 x 5.5 (included cards)

Outside size 4.5 x 6.5 inches

Why we recommend it

It suits gift buyers who want something personal, and who will fill it with a few recipes first.

Skip it if you are organizing a real collection. It is sized for smaller cards, and it isn’t built for many.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Looks like a keepsake
  • Comes with cards
  • From an established gift maker

Cons

  • Non-standard card size
  • Small capacity

3×5 or 4×6: the card size question

Measure your cards before you look at anything else. Most boxes today are made for 4×6, but many older family cards are 3×5, and a few boxes use their own size. Here is how the picks line up.

Your cards Boxes that list them
Both 3×5 and 4×6 Ironwood Gourmet 2 Compartment
3×5 only Ironwood Gourmet Long 3×5, which is made for this size
4×6 only C.R. Gibson, Tidita Large, Zicoto
Not stated MacKenzie-Childs, so check your cards against its 8 x 6.5 inch footprint
Starting fresh with the box’s own cards Mud Pie, at 3.5 x 5.5 inches

A 3×5 card in a 4×6 box will fit but sits low behind the taller cards, and it can get lost. Dividers help. A 4×6 card in a 3×5 box simply won’t go in, which is why we would choose the larger size if you are not sure.

How to choose a recipe box for your kitchen

Count what you have. Listings here range from 10 starter cards to claims of 250 or more cards in the box. A long box like the Tidita only makes sense if you already have a big stack, or you are combining several family collections.

Decide where it will live. A kitchen counter means steam, splashes and floury hands. Wood and enamel wipe clean with a damp cloth, while linen and unstated materials are better on a shelf away from the stove.

Look at the lid. Many boxes here have a groove on the lid that holds a card upright, so the box doubles as a stand. If you cook from big books as well, a cookbook stand will do more for you.

Check what comes inside. Some boxes come with cards and dividers, some come with tabs only, and some are not clear. If you need to buy cards separately, make sure you buy the right size.

Plan for oversize clippings. A fixed center divider, like the one Sous Vide Guy mentions on the Ironwood, keeps things tidy but limits what fits. Magazine clippings folded to card size can get bulky.

Care for the wood. Ironwood says to wipe its boxes with a damp cloth, dry them right away and not to soak them, and to use butcher block or mineral oil to stop the wood drying out. That is a good approach for any wooden box, though you should follow what the maker says for your own.

How we chose these seven boxes

We have not used these boxes. We kept plain in-stock listings with a new lead offer, looked for a real difference between them in card size, shape or what’s included, and allowed two Amazon-first brands. The only independent write-up we could read on any pick is Sous Vide Guy’s 2021 recipe box roundup, which covers the two-compartment Ironwood and earns from Amazon links. For the MacKenzie-Childs box we read the maker’s own product page. Its other picks are small brands, and we didn’t pursue them because we already had our two Amazon-first choices. Further searches found store pages and thin guides that we didn’t rely on, so the other picks rest on their listings. We dropped a bamboo box from Oceanstar, a small brand, to keep Amazon-first and little-known brands to two. A Rifle Paper Co. recipe tin wasn’t available yet, and the Lipper bamboo and C.R. Gibson tin boxes were short on stock, so they aren’t included. These aren’t food-contact items, so no glaze or lead question applies. We also searched the saferproducts.gov Recall API by brand. Ironwood, Mud Pie, Zicoto and Tidita returned no entries. MacKenzie-Childs returned a single entry for paper candle shades, a different product, and nothing for recipe boxes. Searching Gibson returned an office chair recall and a stuffed animal recall from 1996, and neither concerns these boxes.

Recipe box questions, answered

What size is a standard recipe card?

Two sizes are common: 3×5 and 4×6 inches. Most new boxes in this guide are built around 4×6, and one takes both. Always measure yours before buying.

How many recipes does a recipe box hold?

It depends on the box and the cards. Zicoto says its box holds up to 250 cards. Most other listings here give no figure, so compare the outside sizes and remember that thick cards and sleeves use up room faster.

Do recipe boxes come with cards?

Some do. The Tidita Large includes 100, the Zicoto 50, the C.R. Gibson and MacKenzie-Childs 40 each, and the Mud Pie 10. Sous Vide Guy says the two-compartment Ironwood comes without any.

Is wood or enamel better for a recipe card box?

Both work, and both wipe clean. Acacia has a darker, more varied grain and wants an occasional oiling, while the MacKenzie-Childs enamel on steel only needs a damp cloth, per the maker. The material matters less than the card size, so settle that first.

What makes a recipe box a good gift?

Fill it. A box with a few family recipes already written in means more than an empty one. The Mud Pie box is sold with that in mind, and the Zicoto and C.R. Gibson sets include enough cards for several people to contribute.

Our last word on keeping your recipes

Choose by card size first, and the two-compartment Ironwood Gourmet is the safest choice if you are unsure. For a present, our gifts for cooks and hostess gifts guides have more ideas. If your favorite recipes live in books, the cookbook stand guide and our list of Mexican cookbooks pair well with a box of family cards.
