Flap, Spout or Flip Top? How to Pick the Best Sugar Dispenser

The best sugar dispenser pours cleanly and keeps moisture out. We compare eight glass and plastic pourers for home tables, coffee bars and busy breakfasts.

A sugar dispenser is the sort of thing you stop noticing, until it clumps, jams or leaves a sticky ring on the table. Restaurants settled on the glass pourer long ago, because it’s quick and doesn’t need a spoon. At home, you have more choice.

These eight run from the classic diner shape to self-closing spouts, in glass and in plastic. Most are simple enough that a listing tells you much of what you need, so we also say where the listing goes quiet.

Quick verdict: which sugar dispenser to buy

Buy the GoodCook Everyday Sugar Pourer, 12 oz: a plain glass jar with a pop-up spout, and the “Best of the Best” in the one outside guide we could read. For a spout that opens more easily, choose the OXO Good Grips Glass and accept hand washing. For the dishwasher, the Tablecraft Glass Sugar Pourer has a dishwasher-safe body.

Our picks for the best sugar dispenser

1. GoodCook Everyday Sugar Pourer, 12 oz – A Pop-Up Spout You Snap Shut

Best overallGoodCook Everyday Sugar Pourer

GoodCook’s pourer is the choice for those who don’t want to think about it. It’s a 12-ounce glass jar with a screw-on lid and a wide pop-up pour spout that gives quick, controlled pours, then snaps shut when you’ve finished.

BestReviews named the GoodCook glass dispenser its “Best of the Best” in a research-based 2021 guide, describing “a steady stream of sugar from an easy to pour, classic 12-oz. shaker”. It also suggests the dispenser handles fine sugar better than others. That’s worth knowing if you use raw or demerara sugar in your coffee.

The listing is brief and doesn’t cover washing or dimensions, so we’ve marked those details “Not stated”. This is a general kitchen brand rather than a specialist, so the appeal is its simple design and everyday availability.

Why we like it

  • A wide pop-up spout
  • The screw-on lid makes refilling easy
  • A 12-ounce glass jar
  • BestReviews’ “Best of the Best”

2. OXO Good Grips Glass Sugar Dispenser, 12 oz – A Spout That Opens Easily

Best easy-open spoutOXO Good Grips Glass Sugar Dispenser

OXO’s glass dispenser is the home version of something every diner has, with its fiddly parts improved. An easy-open spout gives you a controlled pour, and at 12 ounces it holds as much as the restaurant pourers on this page. Glass lets you see the level, and a good dispenser needs little more than that.

The listing is short: easy-open spout, controlled pouring, 12-ounce capacity, BPA free and hand wash only. It’s the hand-wash rule that you should weigh up, since a sugar dispenser isn’t something that needs frequent washing, but it does mean you can’t put this in with the coffee cups.

We didn’t find an independent test of this exact glass model, so this pick rests on the listing. It earns its place for the spout, which needs less fiddling than a basic flap. Keep it away from steam, since sugar clumps with moisture in any dispenser.

Why we like it

  • An easy-open spout for a controlled pour
  • A 12-ounce capacity
  • Glass shows the sugar level
  • Sold by Amazon when we checked

Key specifications

Model 11212600
Body Glass
Capacity 12 oz
Top Stainless steel, spout
Opening Easy-open spout
Size Not stated
Care Hand wash only
Pack 1

Why we recommend it

It suits a coffee corner or a breakfast table, for someone who wants glass and a spout that’s easier to use than a basic flap.

Skip it if you want everything to go in the dishwasher. OXO says hand wash only.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Controlled pour
  • Clear glass
  • Known maker

Cons

  • Hand wash only
  • Glass can break if dropped
  • No independent test found

3. OXO Good Grips Sugar Dispenser, 9 oz – A Flip-Top Lid That Closes Itself

Best self-closing lidOXO Good Grips Sugar Dispenser

This smaller OXO has a side spout with a flip-top lid that closes on its own, which OXO says allows controlled pouring and limits the moisture that gets in, to help prevent clumping. A clear BPA-free body shows the fill level, and the lid twists off for refilling through a wide mouth.

BestReviews, in a research-based guide from 2021, called it a top pick, saying it “effectively holds exactly one cup of sugar”. It also said it’s made of a heavy plastic despite resembling glass. That’s a useful warning, since the Amazon listing gives its color as “Stainless Steel/Glass” and doesn’t name the body material. We go with BestReviews on that point.

At 9 ounces, it holds less than the glass version, but plastic is the right choice for a home with children or a tile floor. The rule here is also hand wash only. The dimensions are given as 2.5 by 5.5 inches, small enough to sit by a coffee maker.

Why we like it

  • The flip-top lid closes itself
  • The side spout limits moisture, per OXO
  • A wide mouth for refilling
  • A BestReviews top pick

Key specifications

Model 1272380
Body Clear BPA-free body; plastic per BestReviews
Capacity 9 oz
Top Stainless steel accents
Opening Self-closing flip top
Size 2.5 x 5.5 inches
Care Hand wash only
Pack 1

Why we recommend it

Buy it if you want a dispenser that closes itself, and if dropped glass is a real risk at your table.

Skip it if you want something big enough to refill less often. It’s the smaller of the OXO pair.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Self-closing lid
  • Named outside support
  • Resists breakage better than glass

Cons

  • Smaller capacity
  • Hand wash only
  • Looks like glass, but isn’t, per BestReviews

4. Tablecraft Glass Sugar Pourer, 12 oz – The Diner Classic, Dishwasher Safe

Best diner styleTablecraft Sugar Pourer

This is the shape you remember from the counter at a diner, from a maker that sells to restaurants as well as to homes. It’s thick clear glass with a tight-fitting hinged lid that the maker says keeps moisture out. It holds 12 ounces, or one and a half cups of sugar.

The dishwasher-safe body sets it apart from the OXO pair. That’s a real convenience for something that sits out on the table and gets sticky. Tablecraft doesn’t say whether the top also goes in the dishwasher on this listing, though its Beehive version below says to hand wash the metal top, so we’d assume the same here.

This listing shows a pack count that’s hard to read: “1 – Pack” alongside a unit count of 12, which seems to refer to ounces. It’s meant to be a single pourer, but read the listing before you buy. It was sold by a third-party seller when we checked.

Why we like it

  • Thick clear glass
  • A hinged lid that keeps moisture out, per the maker
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Holds one and a half cups

Key specifications

Skip it if you want the seller and pack count to be simple. Double-check this listing before you buy.

5. Tablecraft Beehive Sugar Pourer, 12 oz – A Retro Shape With a Steel Spout

Best retro lookTableCraft HBH860 Beehive Collection Sugar Pourer

Tablecraft’s Beehive line takes the same 12-ounce pourer and gives it a ribbed retro shape and a stainless steel pour spout. It’s 6-5/8 inches high, and it’s made of clear soda lime glass.

The care instructions are clear: the glass is dishwasher safe, while the metal top needs hand washing. It’s suggested for countertops, coffee stations and restaurants, and the listing says it’s for home as well as commercial use.

We include two Tablecraft pourers because they serve different tastes: this one for its looks, the other for its plain diner shape. It was also sold by a third-party seller when we checked. Our syrup dispenser guide lists a matching Beehive syrup dispenser if you want them to go together on the table.

Why we like it

  • A retro beehive shape
  • Clear soda lime glass
  • A stainless steel pour spout
  • The glass goes in the dishwasher

Key specifications

6. American Metalcraft Plastic Sugar Shaker, 12 oz – A Restaurant Pourer in SAN Plastic

Best for a busy tableAmerican Metalcraft 12 oz Plastic Sugar Shaker w/Lid

American Metalcraft supplies restaurants, and this shaker is the kind of thing that can take a knock. It has a SAN plastic base and a stainless steel top, it’s dishwasher safe and stain proof according to the listing, and it holds 12 ounces. The maker says it’s for both restaurant and home use, and this listing is for one, not a case.

Its main advantage is that it won’t shatter on a tile floor like glass, yet it holds more than the smaller OXO plastic dispenser. It looks like a commercial item, and that’s what it is, which may or may not suit a home table.

The listing doesn’t say what kind of opening the top has beyond calling it a shaker with a lid, so check the photos to see if it’s the flap style you want. It was sold by a third-party seller when we checked.

Why we like it

  • A SAN plastic base won’t shatter like glass
  • A stainless steel top
  • Dishwasher safe, per the listing
  • Holds 12 ounces

Key specifications

Model SAN316
Body SAN plastic
Capacity 12 oz
Top Stainless steel

Why we recommend it

Buy it for a table that’s used hard, with children or guests, where a glass pourer wouldn’t last.

Skip it if you want a warm, homey look. This is plainly a restaurant item.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Hard to break
  • Goes in the dishwasher
  • Holds 12 ounces

Cons

  • Commercial look

7. Aelga Glass Sugar Dispenser, 7 oz – A Weighted Flap That Opens When Tilted

Best small and modernAelga Glass Sugar Dispenser with Pour Spout

Aelga’s dispenser uses a neat trick: the stainless steel flip lid opens by itself when you tilt the bottle and closes again when you set it upright. You don’t have to find a lever or unscrew anything. The total capacity is only 7 ounces, which makes it the smallest here, and it’s built for a coffee bar rather than a baking session.

The brand also claims that the closed lid keeps out odors, oxygen and ants, a claim we haven’t seen tested, so we wouldn’t count on that beyond it being a closed top. It’s food-grade glass with a brushed steel top, and it looks tidy and modern.

Aelga sells mainly through Amazon, and everything here comes from its listing. The weighted flap is the reason it’s on this list. Note that any moving flap can jam if sugar gets damp, so keep it clear of the kettle.

Why we like it

  • The flip lid opens and closes by itself
  • Brushed stainless steel top
  • Small and neat on a coffee bar
  • Glass shows the level

Key specifications

Model Not stated
Body Food-grade glass
Capacity 7 oz
Top Brushed stainless steel
Opening Weighted flip lid
Size Not stated
Care Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits one or two coffee drinkers who want a small, modern dispenser with no levers to push.

Skip it if you bake or sweeten for a crowd. You’d refill it often.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Automatic flap
  • Tidy look
  • Small footprint

Cons

  • Smallest capacity here

8. Tebery Glass Sugar Dispensers, 12 oz, 2-Pack – A Pair With Flip-Top Spouts

Best two-packTebery 2 Pack 12OZ Glass Sugar Dispenser/Pourer/Shaker with Stainless Steel Pour-Flap Lid

If you want one for sugar and one for something else, Tebery’s pair fills that need. These are thick clear glass jars with screw-on lids and flip-top spouts, 12 ounces each, 5.25 inches high and 3 inches across. Tebery suggests them for sugar, Parmesan cheese, salt, pepper and spices.

The design is the familiar retro diner shape. A second jar gives you a spare for another table, or a dedicated shaker for a dry seasoning.

Tebery is another Amazon-first brand with a modest listing, which doesn’t cover care or the steel grade. It sits at the end of this list for those reasons. It’s a low-effort way to get two matching dispensers, not a specialist’s product.

Why we like it

  • Two jars in the pack
  • 12 ounces each
  • Screw-on lids with flip-top spouts
  • Thick clear glass

Key specifications

Model Sugar Dispenser
Body Thick clear glass

Why we recommend it

Buy it if you want a matching pair for a coffee bar and a breakfast table, or one for sugar and one for a dry seasoning.

Skip it if you want just one, or a maker with more detail behind it.

Pros

  • Two for one purchase
  • Generous size
  • Versatile

Cons

How to choose a sugar pourer

Start with the opening, because that’s what you’ll deal with every morning. A classic flap gives a fast pour but can trap sugar. A pop-up spout or an easy-open spout gives you more control. A self-closing lid or weighted flap means less fuss, but it’s a moving part that can stick if sugar gets damp. Think about how you use it: a teaspoon in a cup needs more control than a heavy pour into a bowl of cereal.

Next, choose your body. Plain glass shows the level, feels solid and is usually dishwasher friendly, but it can break on a hard floor. Plastic is a better choice for a table with children. We’ve kept to plain glass and plastic here, so there’s no glaze to think about. If you prefer a lidded bowl and a spoon, see our sugar bowl guide.

Consider the size, too. Twelve ounces is the classic restaurant size and takes about one and a half cups, according to Tablecraft. Seven or nine ounces is better for a compact coffee station, but you’ll refill it more often. Refilling is easier with a wide mouth, and easier still if you use a funnel.

Last, think about moisture, the enemy of any dispenser. Keep it away from a kettle or an espresso steam wand, and let a washed jar dry fully before you refill it. OXO and Tablecraft both describe their tops as keeping moisture out, but sugar in a humid kitchen will still clump over time.

How we picked these eight dispensers

We haven’t used these dispensers. We looked for single units suited to a home, not restaurant case packs. Most Winco and several other restaurant pourers were low in stock or only sold by the dozen, so they aren’t here. Specs come from each listing, and all were in stock when we checked.

We read the BestReviews guide to sugar shakers by Ade Hennis, last updated in September 2021, which is based on research rather than a described comparison at a table. It covers the plastic OXO and the GoodCook here. Other results were affiliate roundups, or retailer pages we didn’t rely on. The other picks rest on listing and maker details. Aelga and Tebery are the two brands that sell mainly through Amazon, and they’re at the bottom of the list on purpose.

The pair of OXO dispensers and the pair of Tablecraft pourers are different designs, in different materials or shapes, not the same product twice.

Sugar dispenser questions, answered

How do I stop sugar from clumping in a dispenser?

Keep moisture out. Dry the jar fully after washing, keep the dispenser away from steam, and close the top. OXO says its side spout minimizes moisture, and Tablecraft says its hinged lid keeps moisture out, but a humid kitchen can still cause clumps.

Glass or plastic?

Glass gives a classic look and usually washes easily. Plastic won’t shatter, and BestReviews notes the OXO plastic is heavy for its material. Choose based on who’s using it and what your floor is made of.

Can I use these for other things?

Tebery suggests salt, pepper and spices, as well as Parmesan. Clean out the jar when you switch. Coarse sugars may not flow well, as BestReviews says the GoodCook suits fine sugar best.

How much does a standard sugar pourer hold?

Twelve ounces is the most common size here. Tablecraft gives that as one and a half cups. The OXO plastic holds 9 ounces, and the Aelga holds 7.

Are sugar pourers dishwasher safe?

Some are. Tablecraft and American Metalcraft say so, though Tablecraft’s Beehive says to hand wash the metal top. Both OXO models are hand wash only.

Our final pick for the sugar on your table

For most homes, the GoodCook is the sensible choice, with a simple spout and enough room for a good while. Choose the OXO glass for an easier spout, the plastic OXO for a table with children, and the Tablecraft if the dishwasher matters. Our creamer pitcher guide covers what goes beside it.
