Pans That Earn Their Place: The Best Baking Pan Sets

Nine bakeware sets from Calphalon, Nordic Ware, Caraway, Anchor Hocking and more, with the real pans in each box, materials, coatings and oven limits.

A person in an apron holding a dark rimmed baking tray of freshly baked round cookies
A rimmed sheet pan is the piece of bakeware most kitchens reach for first.

In a restaurant kitchen the oven side runs on a short list of pans: sheet pans by the stack, a few deep 9 by 13-inch pans for anything that bakes in a slab, muffin tins and loaf pans. Home kitchens need the same shapes in smaller numbers, and a bakeware set is the quickest way to get them. The catch is that sets vary wildly. Some are six useful pans; others pad the count with lids, racks and organizers, or put a coating on everything whether you want one or not.

This guide compares the sets worth buying from makers we could identify, with the actual pans in each box, the material underneath, the coating on top and the oven limit each maker states. Where a listing leaves something out, we say so rather than guess.

Quick verdict: which bakeware set to buy

For most kitchens, the Calphalon Legacy 10-piece Nonstick Bakeware Set is the one to buy: nine pans in the shapes recipes actually call for, including a loaf pan, a 9-inch square, a 13 by 9, a 12-cup muffin pan and three cookie sheets, in heavy-gauge carbon steel. Its listing gives no oven limit or warranty, so check those before you buy. If you would rather have no coating at all, the Nordic Ware Naturals 4-piece Set gives you three uncoated aluminum sheet pans and a storage lid. For glass, the Anchor Hocking 15-piece Glass Bakeware Set is made in the USA and carries a 5-year warranty.

The table below compares our five standout sets, one for each kind of baker. All nine sets are reviewed in full after it.

Our picks for the best baking pan sets

These nine sets cover the main ways to equip an oven: coated aluminized steel for easy release, uncoated aluminum for roasting, ceramic coatings for higher heat, glass for casseroles and pies, and large or compact nonstick sets for different budgets and cupboards. For each one, the “What’s included” row lists the pans, so you can see what the piece count really buys.

1. Calphalon Legacy 10-piece Nonstick Bakeware Set – Standard Shapes in One Box

Most standard shapesCalphalon Legacy 10-Pieces Nonstick Bakeware Set PFOA-Free

This is the set that covers the most of the shapes recipes are written for in a single box. The listing names an 8-inch round cake pan, a 9-inch square bake pan, a 9 by 5-inch loaf pan, a 13 by 9-inch bake pan, a 12-cup muffin pan, three cookie sheets (13, 15 and 18-inch) and a cooling rack. That is nine pans plus the rack. King Arthur Baking says the 9 by 5-inch loaf size suits bigger yeast loaves and many quick breads; for a standard 3-cup-flour sandwich loaf it suggests an 8.5 by 4.5-inch pan, which this set does not include.

The listing describes heavy-gauge carbon steel with rolled, reinforced edges to help resist warping, and a PFOA-free nonstick coating; it does not name the coating type. It says hand wash only. The listing calls the set high-heat oven safe but gives no temperature, and it does not state where the set is made or a warranty, so check the listing or the box before you rely on it for very hot roasting.

In practice, the large cookie sheet is the pan you will use most: roasted vegetables, a tray of empanadas, cookies, or tomatoes and chiles charred for salsa. The 13 by 9 handles a sheet cake or a pan of tres leches, and the single round suits a one-layer cake; buy a second round if you bake layer cakes.

Why we like it

  • Nine pans plus a cooling rack, all itemized
  • Loaf, square, 13 x 9, muffin and round in one set
  • Heavy-gauge carbon steel with reinforced edges, per the listing
  • From an established cookware maker

2. Nordic Ware Naturals 4-piece Set – Uncoated Aluminum Sheet Pans

Best uncoatedNordic Ware Naturals 4 Piece Set - USA Made Aluminum Commercial Quality Pans for Baking or Roasting

Walk into most commercial kitchens and the sheet pans are plain, uncoated aluminum. They conduct heat well, take years of hard use and have nothing on the surface to scratch off. Nordic Ware’s Naturals set brings that style home: a half sheet, a jelly roll pan and a quarter sheet, plus a lid for the half sheet that the listing says is BPA- and melamine-free polypropylene.

The listing describes pure aluminum for heat conductivity and even browning, and encapsulated galvanized steel rims that resist warping. It also says the pans will never rust and are made in America of domestic and imported materials. The lid turns the half sheet into a covered tray for marinating, carrying a dish to a party or holding prepped vegetables in the fridge; it is for storage, so keep it out of the oven.

Three sheet sizes cover a surprising amount of baking and roasting. The half sheet takes a full batch of cookies or a sheet-pan dinner, the jelly roll pan suits a rolled cake or a smaller tray of vegetables, and the quarter sheet is right for toasting pepitas or sesame seeds. Because the surface is bare, line it with parchment or a silicone mat for anything sticky. The listing gives no oven limit or dishwasher guidance, and natural aluminum darkens with use.

Why we like it

  • No coating to wear or scratch off
  • Steel-reinforced rims resist warping, per the listing
  • Three sheet sizes plus a storage lid
  • Made in America, per Nordic Ware

Key specifications

3. Caraway 5-piece Ceramic Bakeware Set – Higher Heat, Built-In Storage

Best ceramic-coatedCaraway 5-Piece Non-Stick Ceramic Bakeware Set

Caraway’s smaller bakeware set is the coated option for cooks who want more oven headroom. The listing rates the pans to 550°F, a full 100 degrees above the 450°F that most of the nonstick sets here are rated to, which leaves room for hot roasting. You get an 18 by 13-inch baking sheet, a 10 by 15-inch baking sheet, a 12-cup muffin pan, a 9 by 13-inch rectangle pan and a storage organizer that holds them upright.

The body is aluminized steel and the surface is a ceramic nonstick coating. Caraway says the coating is free of PTFE, PFOA, PFAS, lead and cadmium; that is the maker’s own statement, and we report it as such. The listing asks you to hand wash the pans and put them back in the organizer, which is the part of this set a small kitchen will appreciate most: four pans stand in one rack instead of sliding around a cupboard.

Four pans is fewer than most sets here, and there is no loaf pan or square pan, so a baker who makes banana bread or brownies will need to add those. The 18 by 13-inch sheet is close to a standard half sheet and the 10 by 15-inch is a jelly roll size. The listing gives no country of manufacture or warranty terms.

Why we like it

  • Oven safe to 550°F, per the listing
  • Storage organizer included
  • Two sheet sizes plus a 9 x 13 pan
  • Coating made without PTFE or PFAS, per Caraway

Key specifications

4. Anchor Hocking 15-piece Glass Bakeware Set – Bake, Serve and Store

Best glass setAnchor Hocking Complete Glass Bakeware Set (15 piece

Glass bakeware does a different job from metal. It heats slowly and holds heat, which suits casseroles, baked pasta, enchiladas, fruit crisps and pies, and you can see the bottom crust as it browns. Anchor Hocking’s 15-piece set is a complete glass kit: a 2-quart baker, a 1.5-quart casserole with a glass cover, a 1.5-quart loaf dish, a 1-quart mixing bowl, a 9-inch pie dish, an 8-ounce measuring cup and four 6-ounce custard cups with plastic lids.

Those custard cups are worth noting for anyone who makes flan or individual custards; they also double as prep bowls for chopped onion, cilantro and lime. The listing says the pieces are tempered to resist chipping and handle heat up to 425°F, and that they are safe in the microwave, fridge, freezer, dishwasher and a pre-heated oven. That last condition matters: put glass into an oven that is already hot, never into a cold oven that heats around it, and follow the maker’s instructions on sudden temperature changes.

King Arthur Baking’s guide to baking pans advises reducing the oven temperature by 25°F when using a glass pan, because glass retains heat. Anchor Hocking says the glass is made in the USA, in Ohio, and backs it with a 5-year warranty covering chipped, cracked or broken pieces used according to instructions.

Why we like it

  • Made in the USA, per Anchor Hocking
  • 5-year warranty against chips and breaks
  • Dishwasher, microwave and freezer safe
  • Custard cups with lids for flan or prep

Key specifications

Pieces 15 (including 1 glass cover and 4 plastic lids)
What’s included 2-qt baker, 1.5-qt casserole with glass cover, 1.5-qt loaf dish, 1-qt mixing bowl, 9-in pie dish, 8-oz measuring cup, four 6-oz custard cups with lids
Material Tempered glass
Coating None
Oven-safe to 425°F, pre-heated oven only
Dishwasher safe Yes
Made in USA
Warranty 5 years

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you bake more casseroles, pies and custards than cookies, and like dishes that go from oven to table to fridge.

Pros

5. Rachael Ray Yum-o! 10-piece Bakeware Set – Many Shapes, Low Cost

Budget pickRachael Ray Yum-o! Nonstick Bakeware Oven Lovin' Baking Pans Set

If the goal is to fill a first kitchen with a wide range of bakeware for a small outlay, Rachael Ray’s Yum-o! set is the value choice here. The listing describes heavy-gauge steel built to resist warping, a nonstick finish for easy release, and bold, extra-wide silicone grips on the handles. Part of the proceeds goes to Yum-o!, Rachael Ray’s nonprofit for kids and families, according to the listing.

Rachael Ray’s own product page itemizes the ten pieces: a 9 by 13-inch covered roasting pan, a 10 by 15-inch sheet pan with an insert, a 9 by 5-inch meatloaf pan with an insert, two 9-inch round cake pans, a 9-inch square cake pan and a 9 by 13-inch crispy sheet pan. The covered pan is the handy one for anyone who takes a sheet cake or a tray of bars to a gathering. The inserts count as pieces, and there is no muffin pan.

Rachael Ray’s page rates the set oven safe to 450°F (the Amazon listing says 500°F; go by the maker’s lower figure). The maker says the pans are dishwasher safe but recommends hand washing, and describes the warranty only as a quality assurance guarantee. The coating type and country of manufacture are not stated. As with any nonstick bakeware, soft utensils and gentle washing keep the surface releasing longer.

Why we like it

  • Ten pieces for a modest cost
  • Heavy-gauge steel, per the listing
  • Extra-wide silicone grips
  • Covered 9 x 13-inch pan for carrying

Key specifications

6. Circulon Total 10-piece Bakeware Set – Two of Every Cake Pan

Best large setCirculon Total Nonstick Bakeware Set

Circulon’s 10-piece set is the one to look at if you bake layer cakes and want pairs. The listing itemizes it fully: two 9-inch round cake pans, two 9-inch square cake pans, a 9 by 5-inch loaf pan, a 9 by 13-inch rectangular cake pan with lid, a 10 by 15-inch cookie pan, a 14 by 16-inch cookie pan and a 12-cup muffin pan. Two rounds of the same size means a layer cake bakes in one go, and two squares cover brownies and cornbread at once.

The construction is heavy-gauge steel with warp-resistant rolled rims. The cooking surface carries Circulon’s raised-circle pattern under a nonstick coating; the listing does not say what the coating is. Wide handles give a confident grip with bulky oven mitts, and the lidded 9 by 13 is useful for carrying a tray of bars or keeping a sheet cake covered.

The listing rates the pans oven safe to 450°F and dishwasher safe, while recommending hand washing for the best performance, and backs the set with a limited lifetime warranty. The loaf pan is the larger 9 by 5-inch size, which King Arthur says suits bigger yeast loaves and many quick breads; a recipe written for an 8.5 by 4.5-inch pan will come out lower and wider in it.

Why we like it

  • Every piece and size listed
  • Pairs of round and square cake pans
  • Lidded 9 x 13 pan
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Key specifications

Pieces 10 (9 pans, 1 lid)

Material Heavy-gauge steel, rolled rims
Coating Nonstick with raised circles (type not stated)
Oven-safe to 450°F
Dishwasher safe Yes; hand washing recommended
Made in Not stated
Warranty Limited lifetime

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you bake layer cakes, brownies and cookies regularly and want a complete, fully listed set in one box.

Skip it if you mostly roast; the textured nonstick surface is built for release, and an uncoated sheet pan is better for high-heat vegetables.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Complete, itemized set
  • Pairs for layer cakes
  • Lifetime coverage

Cons

  • Coating not named

7. All-Clad Pro-Release 10-piece Bakeware Set – Light Coating, Big Handles

Premium nonstickAll-Clad Pro-Release Nonstick 10-Piece Bakeware Set

All-Clad is best known for clad stovetop pans, and its Pro-Release bakeware brings the same name to the oven. The listing describes warp-resistant, heavy-gauge aluminized steel under a ceramic-reinforced nonstick coating that resists scratches and staining. Two design details stand out: generously sized handles you can hold with oven mitts without touching the batter, and rounded corners with a lighter-colored coating that All-Clad says helps prevent over-browning.

That lighter color matters more than it sounds. King Arthur Baking’s guide to baking pans says sweet baked goods do better in light pans and that cookie sheets should be light and shiny, so a light coating is a sensible choice for cakes and cookies. America’s Test Kitchen also cautions, in its loaf pan review, that metal pans with nonstick coatings shouldn’t be used above 450°F, and All-Clad rates this set to exactly that.

The weak point is the listing itself: it calls the set “essential pieces” without naming all ten. Check the product images or the box contents before you buy if you need a particular pan. The title says dishwasher safe, while the listing advises washing with soap and a sponge to preserve the nonstick. All-Clad says the set is designed in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, and made in China, with a limited warranty.

Why we like it

  • Heavy-gauge aluminized steel, per the listing
  • Large handles for mitts
  • Light coating to limit over-browning, per All-Clad
  • Dishwasher safe, per the title

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you bake cakes and cookies often and want sturdy, light-coated pans with handles that are easy to hold.

8. Chicago Metallic 7-piece Nesting Bakeware Set – Stores Inside the Roaster

Best for small kitchensChicago Metallic 7-Piece Nonstick Bakeware Nesting Set

Bakeware takes up more room than people expect, and this set is built around that problem. Chicago Metallic says all seven pieces nest inside the roaster for storage, so a whole baking kit fits in one cabinet space. The set is a baking sheet, a cooling rack, a loaf pan, a square cake pan, a roaster and two 6-cup muffin pans.

Two 6-cup muffin pans instead of one 12-cup pan is a sensible trade for small ovens and toaster-sized batches, and the roaster doubles as a deep baking pan for a small roast chicken or a pan of baked rice. For a full-size turkey you would want a dedicated roaster; our guide to the best roasting pan turkey covers those.

The pieces are 0.6 mm carbon steel with a nonstick coating the listing describes as PTFE-, PFOA- and PFOS-free, without naming what it is. Chicago Metallic recommends hand washing to preserve the coating. The listing gives no oven limit, piece sizes, country of manufacture or warranty for this set, so treat it as an everyday set for moderate temperatures and check with the maker before high-heat use.

Why we like it

  • Whole set nests inside the roaster
  • Cooling rack included
  • Two 6-cup muffin pans for small batches
  • Nonstick free of PTFE, per the listing

Key specifications

9. Wilton 6-piece Gold Bakeware Set – Sized for Cakes and Cupcakes

Best for cake bakersWilton 6-Piece Gold Bakeware Set

Wilton has been a cake-decorating brand since 1929, according to its listing, and this set is shaped for dessert baking. It holds two baking sheets, two round cake pans, a square cake pan and a 12-cup muffin pan, and the listing gives the sizes: a 15.25 by 10.25-inch medium sheet, a 17.25 by 11.5-inch large sheet, 9 by 1.5-inch rounds, an 8 by 8 by 2-inch square and a 10.5 by 15-inch muffin pan.

Two matching rounds make a layer cake in one bake, and the 8-inch square takes brownies, bars or a small pan of cornbread. Note that the rounds are 1.5 inches deep; King Arthur’s guide to baking pans suggests round cake pans at least 2 inches deep, so a tall cake recipe may need the batter split differently or a deeper pan.

The listing says the coating is made without PFAS, the pans resist warping, the set stacks for compact storage and it is dishwasher safe. Extended handles help with transfers. It does not give the oven limit, the base metal, the country of manufacture or the warranty, so check the packaging before baking at high heat.

Why we like it

  • Every piece sized in the listing
  • Two rounds for layer cakes
  • Dishwasher safe, per the listing
  • Stacks for storage

Key specifications

Pieces 6 pans
What’s included 15.25 x 10.25-in and 17.25 x 11.5-in baking sheets, two 9 x 1.5-in round pans, 8 x 8 x 2-in square pan, 12-cup muffin pan
Material Not stated in the listing
Coating Nonstick, made without PFAS
Oven-safe to Not stated
Dishwasher safe Yes
Made in Not stated

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you bake cakes, cupcakes and cookies far more than you roast, and want a set that goes in the dishwasher.

Skip it if you need a 9 by 13-inch pan or a loaf pan; neither is included.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Dessert-focused shapes
  • Sizes clearly listed
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Shallow 1.5-inch rounds
  • No oven limit stated
  • No loaf or 9 x 13 pan

An empty silver muffin tin beside rolled-out dough, a rolling pin and a small bowl of flour
Light-colored metal pans are the everyday choice for sweet baking.

How to choose a bakeware set for your kitchen

1. Count the pans, not the pieces

Makers count lids, racks and organizers as pieces. The Calphalon set is nine pans and a cooling rack; the Caraway set is four pans and an organizer; the Anchor Hocking count of 15 includes five lids. Write down which pans you would actually use each month and compare that list, not the number on the box.

2. Check the sizes against your recipes

King Arthur Baking’s guide to baking pans lists the core shapes: a 13 by 18-inch half sheet, a 9 by 13-inch pan at least 2 inches deep, 8 and 9-inch squares, a pair of 8 or 9-inch rounds, a 12-cup muffin pan and a loaf pan. For loaves, it says an 8.5 by 4.5-inch pan suits yeast loaves of about 3 to 3.5 cups of flour and a 9 by 5-inch pan suits loaves of about 4 cups; King Arthur calls the half-inch difference a 15 percent change in capacity. Our best baking loaf pan guide goes deeper on that choice.

3. Pick the material for the job

Aluminum and aluminized steel heat quickly and evenly, which is why King Arthur’s Susan Reid calls a light-colored metal pan the ideal vessel and notes that most professionals bake in aluminum. Glass and stoneware heat slowly and hold heat; they suit casseroles, pies and bread pudding, and King Arthur advises lowering the oven by 25°F when baking in glass.

4. Decide on coated or uncoated

Nonstick coatings make cakes and muffins release easily but set an oven ceiling: All-Clad, Circulon and Rachael Ray rate theirs to 450°F, Calphalon’s listing gives no figure, and Caraway rates its ceramic coating to 550°F. Uncoated aluminum, like the Nordic Ware Naturals, has nothing to wear off; line it with parchment or a silicone mat instead. Our guide to the best baking pan liners compares those.

5. Plan where the set will live

Sheet pans and cake pans scratch and dent when they are stacked and dragged out. Caraway includes an organizer and Chicago Metallic’s set nests inside its roaster; for everything else, an upright rack keeps pans separate. See our guide to the best baking pan organizer for racks that fit different cabinets.

How we chose these nine bakeware sets

We started from the pans a working kitchen keeps closest to the oven, sheet pans, deep rectangular pans, muffin tins and loaf pans, and looked for sets that deliver those shapes in standard sizes. We searched Amazon US for bakeware sets from identifiable makers, including Calphalon, USA Pan, Nordic Ware, OXO, Wilton, Rachael Ray, Pyrex and others, and kept only sets that were in stock when we checked. Pyrex’s glass baking dish sets were not in stock at the time, so the glass pick is Anchor Hocking; OXO’s current bakeware set is three baking sheets only, so it did not make the list.

Pieces, sizes, materials, coatings, oven limits, care rules, origin and warranties come from each Amazon listing and, for Rachael Ray, from the maker’s own product page. Guidance on pan sizes and materials comes from King Arthur Baking’s articles on choosing a bread pan, on glass, metal and stoneware, and its complete guide to baking pans, and from America’s Test Kitchen’s loaf pan review. We left out generic-brand sets with thin specifications and listings with scarce stock. We have not baked with these sets ourselves for this guide.

Bakeware set questions, answered

What pieces should a basic bakeware set include?

At minimum: a half sheet pan, a 9 by 13-inch pan, a 12-cup muffin pan and a loaf pan. An 8 or 9-inch square and a pair of round cake pans come next. The Calphalon Legacy set covers all of these with a single 8-inch round; the Circulon set has two of every cake pan.

Is aluminized steel better than aluminum?

They are different trade-offs. Aluminized steel is steel coated with aluminum, which adds stiffness to the aluminum’s heat conduction; pure aluminum, like Nordic Ware’s Naturals, is lighter and has no coating to wear. Both brown well, and King Arthur notes that aluminum is what most professionals use.

Can nonstick bakeware go above 450°F?

Not most of it. All-Clad, Circulon and Rachael Ray rate their nonstick sets here to 450°F, and America’s Test Kitchen gives the same 450°F guidance for nonstick metal pans. Caraway’s ceramic-coated set is the exception here, rated to 550°F.

Do I need to adjust recipes for glass bakeware?

King Arthur Baking advises reducing the oven temperature by 25°F when baking in glass, because glass retains heat, and its tests found glass browned edges less than metal. Anchor Hocking’s glass is rated to 425°F and is for pre-heated ovens only.

Should bakeware go in the dishwasher?

Follow the maker. Anchor Hocking glass and the Wilton and Circulon sets are listed as dishwasher safe; Calphalon’s listing says hand wash only, and Caraway recommends hand washing. Even where the dishwasher is allowed, Circulon and All-Clad recommend hand washing to keep the coating releasing longer.

Buy the Calphalon Legacy 10-piece set if you want one set with the shapes recipes call for, after checking its oven limit. Choose the Nordic Ware Naturals for uncoated sheet pans, Caraway for a ceramic coating rated to 550°F, Anchor Hocking for a glass kit made in the USA, and Rachael Ray when budget comes first. Circulon suits layer-cake bakers, All-Clad cake and cookie bakers who want big handles, Chicago Metallic small kitchens, and Wilton dessert-first baking.

For the deeper pans that handle roasts and big holiday birds, start with our cluster guide to the best roasting pan. If your next bake is a pan of tres leches, our explainer on flan vs tres leches covers what goes into each. And if you would rather someone else did the cooking tonight, see the menu or call to order.
