A stool at the counter changes how a kitchen works. It gives the kids somewhere to do homework, gives a guest a seat while the rice finishes, and gives the cook someone to talk to. Pick the wrong height, though, and it becomes furniture nobody uses: knees against the counter, or chin barely above it.
So before style, start with a tape measure. This guide explains the difference between counter and bar height, names eight stools for different kitchens, and tells you which ones will not fit a standard counter. The maker’s fit statement is the first thing we looked for in every pick.

Quick verdict: which stools to buy
For most homes, the best kitchen bar stools are the Crosley X-Back Wood Counter Stools: a pair with a 24-inch seat for a standard 36-inch counter, solid hardwood stretchers and a back for real meals. For a narrow kitchen, the backless Winsome Satori tucks away. For a true 42-inch bar, the commercial steel Flash Furniture Hercules is the one to get.
Measure your counter first: the height, and the room under it. Everything else follows from those two numbers.

Our picks for the best kitchen bar stools
Six of these eight have counter-height seats, because that is what most kitchens need. One is true bar height and one adjusts between the two. Two come from Amazon-first brands, and we say so in their sections. Each section explains who the stool suits and gives one honest reason to skip it.
1. Crosley X-Back Wood Counter Stools, Set of 2 – A Back and a Sensible Height

Most home kitchens have a 36-inch counter, so most people want a counter-height stool, and this pair is the plain, sensible way to get one. The seat sits at 24 inches, the leg stretchers are solid hardwood, and the curved X-back gives you something to lean on while you wait for the coffee.
The listing describes a contoured wood seat and solid hardwood leg stretchers, which also serve as a place to rest your feet. There is no cushion, so anyone who plans to sit for a long time should add a seat pad. The set comes as two stools in a black finish, and Crosley sells the same design in other finishes and in a 30-inch bar height.
A back matters more than people think. A stool with one is a place to eat a whole plate of chilaquiles. A backless stool is a place to perch while someone else cooks. For most households, that alone settles it. Crosley does not state a weight limit in this listing, so ask before buying if that matters to you.
Why we like it
- 24-inch seat height for standard counters
- Solid hardwood stretchers, per the listing
- Curved X-back for support
- Sold as a pair
- US-based customer support, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | CF500424-BK |
|---|---|
| Sold as | Set of 2 |
| Seat height | 24 in |
| Counter fit | Standard 36 in counters |
| Frame | Wood with solid hardwood stretchers |
| Seat | Contoured wood |
| Back and swivel | X-back, no swivel |
| Weight limit | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits a family kitchen with a standard counter, where people actually sit down to eat. Plain wood wipes clean, which counts for a lot around salsa and small children.
Skip it if you want a soft seat. It is bare wood, so you would need to add a pad.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Right height for most kitchens
- Full back
- Easy-to-wipe wood seat
- Sold in pairs
Cons
- No cushion
- No swivel
- Weight limit not stated
2. Winsome Satori Saddle Seat Counter Stool – Tucks Fully Out of the Way

A backless saddle stool is what you want when the counter is short and the walkway is narrow. The Satori slides under the overhang when nobody is using it, and the listing makes that case too, calling it a good fit for smaller spaces.
The listing describes solid wood construction, a 24-inch seat height and a saddle shape, which dips in the middle so you are not sitting on a flat board. You buy it one stool at a time, so you can get exactly as many as your counter holds.
The listing also suggests it for desks and spare seating, which fits a stool this plain. Assembly is required. Winsome covers replacement parts for up to 60 days from purchase, a short window, so put it together and check it when it arrives.
Why we like it
- Solid wood, per the listing
- Saddle-shaped seat
- 24-inch seat height
- Sold one at a time, so you buy exactly what fits
- Slides under a counter
Key specifications

| Counter fit | Standard 36 in counters |
| Frame | Solid wood |
| Seat | Wood saddle |

Why we recommend it
It suits a galley kitchen or a short peninsula, where stools spend most of the day out of the way and get pulled out for coffee or a quick taco.
Skip it if anyone in the house needs back support or will sit for a full meal. No back means a short perch.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Saves floor space
- Simple to wipe clean
- Buy any number
- Plain, simple design
Cons
- No back
- Parts cover lasts 60 days
- Weight limit not stated
3. Signature Design by Ashley Valebeck Swivel Counter Stool – Swivels to Join the Conversation

Swivel is useful in a kitchen. You can turn to the person cooking, then back to your plate, without dragging a stool across the floor. The Valebeck gives you that with a back and a cushion, and at 19.25 inches wide and deep it is not a huge stool.
Ashley gives a clearer fit statement than most: a 24.5-inch seat that goes under standard 35- to 37-inch islands. The seat is upholstered in a linen-colored polyester with nailhead trim, on a frame of wood, engineered wood and metal, and it stands 36.88 inches high overall.
Light fabric is the catch for a house that cooks with chiles. A linen-colored seat will show a drop of red salsa, so have a damp cloth ready and blot rather than rub. If that worries you, look at the Coaster pick below, which has a faux leather seat. Ashley’s listing sells this as a single stool, so count on buying as many as you need, and note that the page gives no weight limit.
Why we like it
- 360-degree swivel
- Stated fit for 35- to 37-inch islands
- Padded seat with a back
- 19.25-inch footprint
Key specifications
| Model | D546-524 |
|---|---|
| Sold as | Single stool |
| Seat height | 24.5 in |
| Counter fit | 35 to 37 in islands (listing) |
| Frame | Wood, engineered wood and metal |
| Seat | Linen-colored polyester, cushioned |
| Back and swivel | Back, 360-degree swivel |
| Weight limit | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits an island where people sit and talk while someone cooks, and it pairs a padded seat with a back and a swivel for a long stay at the counter.
Skip it if your household spills often. A pale fabric seat will take more care than wood or faux leather.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Smooth 360-degree swivel, per the listing
- Clear island fit
- Padded seat
- Compact footprint
Cons
- Pale fabric shows stains
- Includes engineered wood
- Weight limit not stated

4. Coaster Calecita Swivel Counter Stools, Set of 2 – Wipe-Clean Seats on a Swivel

This is the swivel pair for a kitchen with real traffic. Black faux leather over foam is easier to live with around food than fabric, and the listing gives each seat as 16.25 inches square at 24.5 inches high, with each stool 17.75 x 19.25 x 37.5 inches overall.
Coaster is unusually honest about the materials. The frame uses rubberwood, LVL and particle board, and the padded seat sits on a particle-board deck. That is normal at this level, but it means you should keep the seats dry and tighten any hardware after the first few weeks of use.
The stools have open backs, angled legs and a circular footrest. Full assembly is required, and the listing carries a 1-year limited warranty. Coaster also advises checking the seat height against your counter and leaving room to swivel and get in and out, which is good advice for any stool on this page.
Why we like it
- Faux leather seats over foam
- Open back and circular footrest
- 1-year limited warranty
- Sold as a pair
- Full size and materials stated

Why we recommend it
It suits a family counter where seats get wiped down every day. You get a swivel, a back and a footrest in one pair, and the listing tells you what it is made of.
Skip it if you want solid wood throughout. The seat deck is particle board.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Easy-to-wipe seat
- Swivel with a back
- Warranty stated
- Materials stated plainly
Cons
- Particle-board seat deck
- Full assembly required

5. Flash Furniture Hercules Ladder Back Barstools, 2-Pack – Restaurant Build for a Tall Bar

We work in a restaurant, so we pay attention when a stool is built for one. The Hercules is the commercial pick here: an 18-gauge steel frame with welded support bars, a powder-coated finish, floor glides and a stated capacity of 500 pounds, sold as a pair with a listed 5-year limited warranty.
Height is the thing to watch. The seat sits at 31 inches and the stool stands 42.25 inches overall, which makes this a bar-height stool for a 42-inch bar or a tall kitchen peninsula. It will not fit a standard 36-inch counter, where your knees would hit the top. If you have a normal counter, choose one of the 24-inch picks instead.
The 2.5-inch vinyl seat is easy to wipe down, which is why this style of stool turns up in restaurants, and the support bar doubles as a footrest. The steel-and-vinyl look is more bar than farmhouse kitchen, so it suits a home bar or a game room better than a soft, traditional room.
Why we like it
- 18-gauge steel frame
- 500-pound capacity, per the listing
- Vinyl seat wipes clean
- Welded support bars double as a footrest
- 5-year limited warranty, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | 2-XU-DG697BLAD-BAR-BLKV-GG |
|---|---|
| Sold as | Set of 2 |
| Seat height | 31 in |
| Counter fit | 42 in bars only |
| Frame | 18-gauge steel |
| Seat | 2.5 in vinyl cushion |
| Back and swivel | Ladder back, no swivel |
| Weight limit | 500 lb |
Why we recommend it
It suits a home bar, a tall peninsula or a side kitchen where stools get hard daily use, and it is the only pick here with a commercial rating behind it.
Skip it if your counter is 36 inches high. The 31-inch seat is too tall for it.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Commercial-grade steel frame
- Highest stated capacity here
- Easy-to-clean seat
- Longest stated warranty here
Cons
- Bar height only
- Commercial look
- No swivel
6. Linon Keira Folding Counter Stool – Fold It Away Between Meals

Not every kitchen has room for a stool all the time. The Keira folds down to 17 inches wide, 8 inches deep and 37 inches high, thin enough to stand in a pantry or behind a door until the family comes over for tamales.
It arrives fully assembled, and Linon gives a clear rating of 275 pounds per stool. The listing says the frame is solid rubberwood in a gray-washed finish, with metal folding mechanisms and a padded seat and back in beige polyester. The 25-inch seat pairs with counters of 34 to 38 inches, which covers most kitchens.
A folding stool asks for a little more care than a fixed one. Open it fully and check it is locked in place before anyone sits down, and set it on a flat floor. The listing carries a 6-month limited warranty, shorter than most here. You buy it one stool at a time.
Why we like it
- Folds to 8 inches deep
- Arrives fully assembled
- 275-pound rating, per the listing
- Solid rubberwood frame
- Padded seat and back
Key specifications
| Model | AMZN3238 |
|---|---|
| Sold as | Single stool |
| Seat height | 25 in |
| Counter fit | 34 to 38 in counters (listing) |
| Frame | Solid rubberwood |
| Seat | Beige polyester, padded |
| Back and swivel | Back, no swivel |
| Weight limit | 275 lb |
Why we recommend it
It suits a small apartment, or a kitchen that needs extra seats only on weekends. You keep the floor clear and still have a padded seat with a back when you need it.
Skip it if the stool will stay out every day. A fixed frame has fewer moving parts to wear.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Stores flat
- No assembly
- Stated weight limit
- Back and padding
Cons
- 6-month limited warranty
- Beige fabric shows spills
- Must be opened fully before use

7. Yaheetech Adjustable Swivel Bar Stools, Set of 2 – One Stool for Two Heights

Yaheetech is an Amazon-first brand, and this pick rests on the listing and maker details. We include it because it solves a problem no other pick here does: it adjusts. The gas lift moves the seat from 25 to 33.3 inches, so the listing puts it at home with counters and bars from 35 to 44 inches.
That helps if you are not sure of your height, or if you may move house. The listing describes a steel frame, plywood seat, high-density foam and PU leather, with a 360-degree swivel, a footrest and a 16-inch base with an anti-slip rubber ring. It rates each stool at 300 pounds.
PU leather wipes clean, which is useful near food. A pedestal base also has fewer legs to trip on, though it looks more office or diner than farmhouse. Check that the seat is the same height on both stools after you set them, because a gas lift can be adjusted by anyone who sits down.
Why we like it
- Seat adjusts from 25 to 33.3 inches
- Sold as a pair
- 300-pound rating, per the listing
- 360-degree swivel
- Wipeable PU leather
Key specifications
| Model | YT-00090526-001 |

| Sold as | Set of 2 |
| Seat height | 25 to 33.3 in |

| Frame | Steel base, plywood seat |
| Seat | PU leather over foam |
| Back and swivel | Back, 360-degree swivel |
| Weight limit | 300 lb each |
Why we recommend it
It suits a household with a counter that is not quite standard, or a renter who wants stools that will still fit in the next place.
Skip it if you want a wood stool or a warm look. This is a metal-and-PU-leather piece from an Amazon-first brand.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Fits many heights
- Swivel and back
- Easy to wipe
- Stated weight rating
Cons
- Amazon-first brand
- Rests on the listing alone
- Office-style look
8. Amazon Basics Solid Wood Saddle-Seat Counter Stools, Set of 2 – Simple Wood Pair in Black

Amazon Basics is the store’s own brand, and this pick rests on the listing. It is the plain option: two backless saddle-seat stools with a solid wood frame, an A-frame leg design and built-in foot rests, sold as a set of two.
The numbers are clear. Each has a 24-inch seat for counters of 36 to 39 inches and measures 17 by 12.7 by 24 inches overall. It weighs 11.6 pounds and has a stated limit of 300 pounds. At 16.9 by 9.6 inches, the seat is narrow from front to back, so treat this as a perch and not a dining chair.
Care is as simple as it gets: wipe with a dry cloth. Assembly is required, with the hardware included. This is an easy pair to tuck under a counter, and at under 12 pounds, it is easy to carry to wherever you need an extra seat.
Why we like it
- Solid wood frame, per the listing
- 300-pound limit, per the listing
- Light at 11.6 pounds
- Built-in foot rests
- Stated fit for 36- to 39-inch counters
Key specifications
| Model | CH01-0201-150-2P-A07 |

| Counter fit | 36 to 39 in counters (listing) |
| Frame | Solid wood A-frame |
| Seat | Contoured wood saddle |
| Back and swivel | Backless, no swivel |
| Weight limit | 300 lb |
Why we recommend it
It suits a first apartment or a spare pair for a breakfast bar, when you want a stool with clear numbers and no extras.
Skip it if you plan to sit through whole meals. The seat is narrow and has no back.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Clear stated specs
- Light and easy to move
- High stated limit
- Sold as a pair
Cons
- Narrow seat
- No back
- Amazon’s own brand
How to choose stools for your kitchen
Counter height or bar height
Measure from the floor to the top of the counter. Design and retail guides generally match a 24- to 27-inch seat with a 36-inch counter, and a 28- to 32-inch seat with a 42-inch bar. Measure a stool from the floor to the seat, never to the top of the back. Many stools sold as bar stools are really counter stools, so the seat height is the number to trust.
Knee room
Next measure from the floor to the underside of the counter. Guides commonly call for about 10 to 12 inches between the seat and the underside, and an overhang of at least 10 inches so your knees have somewhere to go. With a short overhang, a backless stool that can sit partly underneath is often easier to live with.
How many will fit
Allow about 24 inches of counter per stool, measured center to center, and a little more for swivels or arms. An 8-foot island gives you about four seats, not five. Do not forget the walkway behind them.

Back or backless
A back is for sitting through a meal. Backless is for perching, and for tucking out of sight. Children and older family members usually do better with a back, and a footrest matters for everyone, because feet dangle at this height.
Seat material and cleaning
Kitchen stools live near salsa, oil and small hands. Wood, vinyl and faux leather wipe down fast. Fabric is softer but takes more care, especially in pale colors. Restaurants favor seats that wipe down between guests, and the same logic works at home.
Weight limits and assembly
Many listings give no weight limit, and we mark those “Not stated”. If it matters in your home, choose a pick with a stated figure or ask the seller. Tighten the hardware after assembly, and check it again after a few weeks of use. Stools loosen with use, and a wobble is the first sign to stop and fix it.
How we chose these eight stools
We did not sit on these stools ourselves. We started from the Amazon listings, kept only stools in stock as new from identifiable makers, and compared stated heights, materials, weight limits and warranties. These picks rest on each listing and maker’s details. A search for reviews of the Crosley, Winsome and Flash Furniture stools found none from a reputable outlet, and we mark the Amazon-first brands.
We also searched the CPSC recall database by brand, and none of these stools came up. We left out drafting stools and steel shop stools, since they are a different product.
Bar stool questions, answered
What is the difference between counter height stools and bar stools?
Counter height stools have seats of about 24 to 27 inches for 36-inch counters. Bar stools have seats of about 28 to 32 inches for 42-inch bars. Always check the seat height, because sellers use the names loosely.
What size stool do I need for a 36-inch counter?
Look for a seat of about 24 to 27 inches. The Crosley, Winsome, Ashley, Coaster, Linon and Amazon Basics picks all sit in that range.
How many stools fit at my island?
Divide the usable length by about 24 inches, and allow more if the stools swivel or have arms.
Are swivel stools a good idea in a kitchen?
They help you turn to talk or get out in a tight space, but they need a little more room, and they have more parts to work loose. Check the base now and then.
Are backless stools comfortable?
For a coffee or a quick lunch, yes. For a full meal or a long sit, most people will want a back. A saddle seat helps a little, as the Satori and Amazon Basics stools show.
