Knife, Server or Both? How to Pick the Best Cake Server

The best cake server for birthdays and weddings: eight knife-and-server sets and single servers compared on steel, plating, length and care.

A hand reaching for clear plates holding slices of red velvet and layered cake on a wooden table
Slices of layer cake set out on clear plates.

A tres leches cake is soft enough to fall apart on the way to the plate, and a tall birthday cake is worse. A table knife cuts it, but then you need a second tool under the slice, and that is where most slices tip over. A cake server is the flat, wide blade that makes the trip.

Cake servers are sold in two ways: alone, or paired with a long cake knife. Paired sets are also what people buy for a wedding, so looks matter as much as the blade. This guide covers eight, explains what you give up with silverplate, and says which ones have any outside review behind them. For the rest of the serving drawer, see our guide to the best serving utensils.

Quick verdict: which cake server to buy

For most homes, the best cake server is the Lenox Portola 2-Piece Cake Knife and Server Set: 18/10 stainless steel, a mirror finish and dishwasher safe, so it can work at a wedding and then every birthday after it. If you only want one tool, choose the All-Clad Stainless Steel Pie and Cake Server. For a wedding keepsake, choose the Lenox True Love Set, and accept that it should be washed by hand.

The table below compares five standouts. All eight are reviewed after it, followed by what to look for and common questions.

Our picks for the best cake server

1. Lenox Portola 2-Piece Cake Knife and Server Set – Everyday Steel, Wedding Looks

Best overallLenox Portola Silverware Cake Knife & Server Dessert Set

This set solves the usual problem with wedding cake sets, which is that they get used once. Lenox makes both pieces in 18/10 stainless steel with a mirror finish and says they are dishwasher safe. That means no polishing and no special care after the party.

You get one cake knife and one cake server, so the knife does the cutting and the server does the lifting. The Portola pattern is plain enough for a birthday table and dressed up enough for a reception. Lenox sells it as a wedding cake cutting set, and it is the safest choice if you are buying for someone whose china you have not seen.

The listing gives the box size but not the length of each piece, so we can’t tell you how far the knife reaches. If you often cut very tall cakes, compare it with the 13-inch True Love set below.

Why we like it

  • 18/10 stainless steel throughout
  • Dishwasher safe, per Lenox
  • Comes as a matched knife and server
  • Plain pattern suits most tables

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who wants one good set for weddings, anniversaries and ordinary cakes, and does not want to polish it.

2. All-Clad Stainless Steel Pie and Cake Server – One Tool With a Wide Base

Best single serverAll-Clad Stainless Steel 11-inch Pie & Cake Server

If you already have a good long knife, you may not need a set. All-Clad’s server is a single piece from its Cook & Serve line, with a wide base and solid edges for slicing and serving, and the same style of handle as its cookware.

Its width is the point on a cake page. A wide base supports more of a slice, which helps with layered and soaked cakes. The steel is mirror-polished and dishwasher safe, and All-Clad rates it as heat safe up to 600°F, so it can also lift a slice straight from a hot pan.

One small conflict: the title calls it 11-inch and a feature line says it measures 10 inches. Expect something around that size. The edges are solid, not serrated, so it is better at lifting than at cutting through a firm crumb or a hard frosting.

Why we like it

  • Wide base for support
  • Mirror-polished stainless steel
  • Heat safe to 600°F, per All-Clad
  • Dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model 11644010362
Pieces Server only
Material Stainless steel
Finish Mirror-polished
Length 10 to 11 inches (listing gives both)
Dishwasher safe Yes
Warranty All-Clad accessories limited warranty

Why we recommend it

It suits a home baker who cuts with a knife anyway and wants a server that also works for bars, quiche and casseroles.

Skip it if you want a matched set for a wedding, or a serrated edge that does the cutting too.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Works well beyond cake
  • Heat limit is stated
  • Sold by Amazon when we checked

Cons

  • No knife included
  • No serrated edge
  • Size is stated two ways

3. Mikasa Stanton 2-Piece Cake Set – Clean Lines in 18/10 Steel

Best modern setMikasa Stanton 2-Piece Stainles Steel Cake Set

The Stanton has clean lines and a collared detail near the tip, and it matches Mikasa’s Stanton flatware if you own it. It is the set for a table where ornate handles would look out of place.

Mikasa calls the pieces a pie server and a cake knife, which is an honest description of how most people use them. They are 18/10 stainless steel, and Mikasa says both are fully dishwasher safe.

Mikasa does not state the length of the pieces on this listing, so check the fit if you are matching a very large cake. The server is a pie-style shape, which is fine for round cakes cut into wedges but gives less support under a broad sheet-cake square.

Why we like it

  • 18/10 stainless steel
  • Both pieces dishwasher safe
  • Matches Mikasa Stanton flatware
  • Simple, modern look

Key specifications

Model 5113616
Pieces Knife and server
Material 18/10 stainless steel
Finish Polished
Length Not stated
Dishwasher safe Yes
Warranty Not stated on the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a modern table, or a couple who already own Stanton flatware.

Skip it if you prefer engraving or a traditional pattern.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Easy care
  • Understated design
  • Sold by Amazon when we checked

Cons

  • Piece lengths not stated
  • Pie-shaped server suits wedges better than squares

4. Hudson Essentials Hammered Cake Knife and Server Set – Hammered Handles, 12-Inch Reach

Best hammered setHudson Essentials Hammered 18/10 Stainless Steel Cake Knife & Cake Server Set

This is the one set here with an outside recommendation. BestReviews names it its Best of the Best among cake knives, while noting that the flatness of the handle has bothered some customers. BestReviews describes research, not trials we can read, so treat it as a pointer.

The set includes a 12-inch cake knife and a cake server in 18/10 stainless steel, and the handles have a hammered pattern with a smooth mirror finish. Hudson Essentials says it has a heavy feel and good balance, and that is the maker’s description, not ours.

The listing does not say whether it can go in the dishwasher, so hand wash it to be safe. Hudson Essentials is an Amazon-focused brand and the set was sold by a third party when we checked, so read the seller name before you buy.

Why we like it

  • Named by BestReviews
  • 18/10 stainless steel
  • 12-inch knife
  • Hammered handle pattern

Key specifications

Model Not stated
Pieces Knife and server
Material 18/10 stainless steel
Finish Hammered mirror handle
Length 12-inch knife

Why we recommend it

It suits someone who wants a more decorative handle than the Portola without moving to silverplate.

Skip it if flat handles bother your hand, or you want a brand with a long tableware history.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Outside recommendation
  • Stated knife length
  • Durable steel

Cons

  • Some customers dislike the flat handle, per BestReviews

5. Lenox True Love 2-Piece Cake Knife and Server Set – A Keepsake With Etched Hearts

Best wedding keepsakeLenox True Love Silverware Cake Knife & Server Dessert Set

If the set is really for one day and a display case, this is the traditional choice. Lenox etches interlaced hearts on the handles and sells it as a wedding gift. It is the longest set we can confirm, with a 13-inch server and a 13-inch knife, and that length helps on a tiered cake.

It is silverplate over stainless steel, and that brings a trade-off. Lenox recommends hand washing to keep the shine, and plate can wear over years of use, which stainless steel does not do. It is a set to bring out for occasions, not a kitchen tool.

Look carefully at the design before you buy. Hearts suit a wedding or an anniversary, but they will look out of place at a child’s birthday party.

Why we like it

  • 13-inch knife and server
  • Etched heart handles
  • Lenox’s warranty terms appear on the listing
  • Traditional wedding style

Key specifications

Model 812615
Pieces Knife and server
Material Silverplate over stainless steel
Finish Etched hearts on handles
Length 13 inches each
Dishwasher safe Hand wash recommended
Warranty Lenox warranty terms on the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a wedding gift, especially for someone who will keep it for anniversaries.

Skip it if you want something for ordinary cakes, or you never hand wash anything.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Long reach for tall cakes
  • Clear gift appeal
  • Sold by Amazon when we checked

Cons

  • Hand washing recommended
  • Plating needs more care than steel
  • Very specific design

6. Oneida Michelangelo 2-Piece Cake Knife and Server Set – Ornate 18/10 With a Serrated Knife

Most ornateOneida Michelangelo Silverware Cake Knife & Server Dessert Set

Oneida’s Michelangelo pattern is the fancy option that still cleans up easily. The handles are heavily decorated, Oneida describes the finish as mirror and the weight as heavy in the hand, and the material is 18/10 stainless steel instead of plate.

The title also says the knife is serrated and the set is dishwasher safe. A serrated knife helps with a firm crumb and with cakes that have a crisp top, which a plain edge can crush.

It carries a limited lifetime warranty, per the listing. Oneida does not state the length of the pieces here, so check them against your cake if size matters.

Why we like it

  • Ornate look in 18/10 stainless steel
  • Serrated cake knife
  • Dishwasher safe, per the title
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Key specifications

Model 2765002C
Pieces Knife and server
Material 18/10 stainless steel

Why we recommend it

It suits a formal table, or someone who loves traditional patterns but will not polish silver.

Skip it if you like a simple design; this one has a lot going on.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Stated warranty
  • Low care for the look
  • Sold by Amazon when we checked

Cons

  • Ornate handles have more detail to clean
  • Piece lengths not stated

7. Oneida Cabria 2-Piece Cake Server Set – A Light Hammered Texture

Best subtle textureOneida Cabria 2 Piece Cake Server Set

The Cabria sits between the plain Portola and the ornate Michelangelo. Oneida describes a lightly hammered design on 18/10 fine flatware. The set has one cake knife and one cake server, and it is dishwasher safe.

It comes with Oneida’s limited lifetime warranty, so it is a sensible alternative to the Hudson Essentials if you want a hammered look and a known flatware maker behind it. It was sold by a third-party flatware seller when we checked, so confirm the seller and warranty terms on the listing.

The listing is short. It does not state the length of the pieces or whether the knife is serrated, so we have written those down as not stated.

Why we like it

  • Lightly hammered design
  • 18/10 stainless steel
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Oneida’s limited lifetime warranty

Key specifications

Model Not stated
Pieces Knife and server
Material 18/10 stainless steel
Finish Lightly hammered
Length Not stated
Dishwasher safe Yes
Warranty Limited lifetime

Why we recommend it

It suits someone who wants texture without an obviously decorative pattern.

Skip it if you want full details before you buy, since this listing gives few.

Pros and cons

  • Known flatware maker
  • Easy care
  • Understated look

Cons

  • Thin listing

8. Carlisle Hammered Stainless Steel Cake Server, 11-Inch – Built for Buffet Lines

Best for a buffetCarlisle FoodService Products CFS 60207 Hammered Stainless Steel Cake Server

Carlisle makes foodservice equipment, and this hammered server is meant for restaurants, delis and buffets. It is a single 11-inch server made from 18/0, 430-grade stainless steel, so it is a working tool for a dessert table where several people serve themselves.

The steel grade is worth noticing. 18/0 has no nickel, unlike the 18/10 in most sets here, and it generally has less shine and less corrosion resistance. For a buffet server that gets used and washed, that is an acceptable trade if you dry it after washing.

Carlisle’s listing does not state a dishwasher rating or a warranty, and no knife is included. Buy this one for a party or catering, not as a gift.

Why we like it

  • Foodservice maker
  • Hammered look on a plain working tool
  • 11-inch size for a buffet
  • Balanced weight, per Carlisle

Key specifications

Model 60207
Pieces Server only

Why we recommend it

It suits dessert tables, church halls and anyone who serves a lot of sheet cake.

Skip it if you want a matched knife or a gift set.

Pros and cons

  • Good size for a buffet

Cons

  • Lower-grade steel than 18/10

How to choose a server for your cake

  • Set or single piece. A set is for occasions and gifts. If you have a long knife, one good server such as the All-Clad may be all you need.
  • Stainless steel or silverplate. 18/10 stainless steel takes the least care. Silverplate looks traditional, but Lenox recommends hand washing its plated True Love set. Read the material line closely, because some sets described as silver are plated.
  • Reach. A long knife needs fewer strokes across a tall or wide cake. Lenox’s True Love pieces run 13 inches and the Hudson Essentials knife runs 12. Many listings do not state a length at all.
  • Blade shape. A wide base supports soft cake. A narrow wedge suits round cakes cut into thin slices. For round-cake wedges, a server sold as a pie server is fine.
  • Serrations. They help on firm crumbs and crisp tops. Oneida’s Michelangelo knife has them, and All-Clad’s server does not.
  • The rest of the table. Match the pattern to your flatware, or pick a plain one. A good cake stand matters as much as the server when the cake is on display, and for a reception see the best cake stand for a wedding.

How we picked these eight servers

We have not used these products ourselves. We looked through cake servers and cake knife sets sold on Amazon in the United States, kept only new items in stock when we checked, and read each maker’s listing. The one named outside source we could read is BestReviews, which names the Hudson Essentials set; it describes research and does not publish trials we could check. A search for independent tests of the Lenox and Mikasa sets found only affiliate roundups, which we did not rely on.

Plenty of Amazon-first brands sell near-identical wedding sets, and we kept those out in favor of established tableware makers. We also left out Lenox Adorn, because its listing calls it silverplate over zinc alloy in the title and silverplate stainless steel in the features, and sets with crystal handles, because we could not confirm a lead-free statement. A search of the saferproducts.gov recall database by brand found no recall of a cake server or cake knife from these makers.

Cake server questions, answered

What is the best cake server for a wedding?

For a set you will keep using, the Lenox Portola, since it is 18/10 stainless steel and dishwasher safe. For a keepsake, the Lenox True Love, which is silverplate and should be hand washed.

Do I need a cake knife and server, or just a server?

For a tall or layered cake, a long knife cuts more cleanly and the server lifts the slice. For a small cake or a weeknight dessert, a server with a serrated edge can do both, and the All-Clad is a good single piece if you already own a long knife.

Is a cake server the same as a pie server?

They overlap, and many tools are sold as both. Cake sets are usually longer and paired with a knife, and pie servers are shorter wedges with an edge made to cut crust. Mikasa even describes the server in its cake set as a pie server.

How do I keep a soft cake from falling apart?

Chill it if the recipe allows, cut with a long knife, wipe the blade between slices, and slide the server all the way under before lifting. A soaked cake such as tres leches is easier to serve from the pan with a wide server.

Can a cake knife set go in the dishwasher?

It depends on the metal. Lenox Portola, Mikasa Stanton, both Oneida sets and the All-Clad are listed as dishwasher safe. Lenox recommends hand washing its silverplate set, and when a listing does not say, wash it by hand.

Our final pick for serving cake

Buy the Lenox Portola for a set you will use for years. Choose the All-Clad if you only need a server, the Lenox True Love for a wedding gift, and the Carlisle for a busy dessert table.
