Spoons, Tongs or a Full Set? The Best Serving Utensils

The best serving utensils for a family dinner, a party buffet or a taco bar: 18/10 hostess sets, long spoons for chafing dishes and tools for the pot.

A row of polished metal spoons of different sizes laid on a dark wooden surface
Spoons in several sizes, from small topping spoons to full serving spoons.

At a Mexican family party the food is rarely plated. It goes out in pans and bowls: red rice, refried or charro beans, a guisado or two, tortillas in a basket, and a row of toppings. Whether the dinner works depends a surprising amount on the serving spoons. Too few and the rice spoon ends up in the beans; too short and somebody burns a knuckle reaching into a chafing dish.

This guide covers the tools that move food from the pan to the plate: serving spoons, slotted spoons, tongs, ladles and cake servers, sold as sets or singly. Cooking utensils for the stove are a different job, which we cover in our guide to the best kitchen utensil set.

Quick verdict: which serving utensils to buy

For most homes, the best serving utensils are the Oneida Easton 6-Piece Serving Set: 18/10 stainless steel with a solid spoon, a pierced spoon, a fork and a ladle, which covers rice, beans, a guisado and salsa, and it goes in the dishwasher. For a party buffet, the KINGSTONE 8-Piece Set adds tongs and a cake server; for a taco bar, the eight-spoon Hiware set gives every topping its own spoon.

Below are five standout picks side by side, then all nine reviewed in full.

Our picks for the best serving utensils

These nine picks cover the three ways most families serve: matching hostess sets for the dinner table, larger buffet sets for parties, and single working spoons for chafing dishes and pots. Each review lists the pieces, the material and the care the maker or listing states, and one honest reason to skip it.

1. Oneida Easton 6-Piece Serving Set – Every Serving Job Covered

Best overallOneida Flatware Easton Hostess Serving Utensils Silverware Set (6-Piece)

The set to buy if you want one box that handles a whole Mexican dinner, from the rice to the salsa.

Oneida packs six pieces into the Easton serving set: a serving spoon, a pierced serving spoon, a serving fork, a serving ladle, a sugar spoon and a butter knife. Put that against a typical spread and almost nothing is left without a tool. The solid spoon goes in the arroz, the pierced spoon lifts frijoles de la olla or calabacitas out of their liquid, the fork pulls apart carnitas or shredded chicken, and the ladle handles salsa ranchera, mole or a pot of beans with plenty of broth. The sugar spoon and butter knife are small extras that earn their place next to café de olla and a basket of bolillos.

According to the listing, every piece is 18/10 stainless steel, heavy weight and mirror finished, and the set is dishwasher safe with a limited lifetime warranty. Easton is also an Oneida flatware pattern, so if your everyday forks and knives are Easton, the serving pieces match the table.

Oneida does not list the length of each piece on the Amazon listing, so if you plan to reach into deep hotel pans in a chafing dish, measure the depth of your pans and compare once the set arrives.

Why we like it

  • Six pieces, including both a solid and a pierced spoon, a ladle and a fork
  • 18/10 stainless steel with a mirror finish, per the listing
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Limited lifetime warranty
  • Matches Oneida Easton flatware

Material/finish 18/10 stainless steel, mirror finish
Dishwasher-safe Yes (listing)
Heat-safe Not stated; all stainless steel
Best for A full family dinner or holiday table

Why we recommend it

It covers the most ground for one purchase. A solid spoon, a pierced spoon, a fork and a ladle are the four tools a home buffet of rice, beans, a guisado and salsa actually needs, and the 18/10 steel and dishwasher care suit a set that gets used every week rather than once a year.

Skip it if you need several identical spoons for a long buffet line. This is one of each, so a taco bar with eight bowls will still need extra spoons.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Ladle and pierced spoon included
  • 18/10 stainless steel
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Lifetime warranty (limited)

Cons

  • Piece lengths not stated
  • Only one of each piece
  • Sugar spoon and butter knife are small extras most buffets will not need

2. Lenox Portola 5-Piece Serving Set – Dressed Up for Celebrations

Best for formal tablesLenox Portola 5-Piece Silverware Serving Set

A set for the table you dress up: a posada dinner, a quinceañera family meal or a holiday where the good plates come out.

Lenox includes five pieces in the Portola serving set: a serving spoon, a pierced serving spoon, a serving fork, a pie server and a gravy ladle. The pie server is the piece most sets leave out, and at a celebration it is the one you reach for at the end, when the tres leches, the flan or the pastel de cumpleaños comes to the table. The gravy ladle is small, which suits salsas and mole poured over enchiladas rather than soup.

The listing describes the pieces as 18/10 stainless steel with a mirror finish, dishwasher safe and heavy duty. Portola is also a full Lenox flatware pattern, sold in large sets, so a family that already owns the forks and knives can match the serving pieces to them.

Lenox does not give lengths or weights on the listing, and there is no slotted spoon in a size suited to a deep chafing pan, so treat this as a table set for platters and bowls rather than a buffet-line kit.

Why we like it

  • Includes a pie server for cakes and flan
  • Solid and pierced serving spoons
  • 18/10 stainless steel, mirror finish (listing)
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Matches Lenox Portola flatware

Key specifications

Length Not stated
Material/finish 18/10 stainless steel, mirror finish
Dishwasher-safe Yes (listing)
Heat-safe Not stated; all stainless steel
Best for Holiday and celebration tables, desserts

Why we recommend it

Choose it when the serving pieces are part of how the table looks. It covers dinner and dessert in one box, and the mirror-finish 18/10 steel matches dressy flatware without needing special care.

Skip it if you mainly serve soups and stews. The gravy ladle is meant for sauces, so pozole or menudo still needs a full-size ladle.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Pie server included
  • 18/10 stainless steel
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Matches a full flatware pattern

Cons

  • No lengths stated
  • Gravy ladle is small for soup
  • One of each piece only

3. Hudson Essentials Hammered 18/10 Hostess Serving Set, 8-Piece – A Lasagna Server for Enchiladas

Best for casseroles and dessertHudson Essentials Hammered 18/10 Stainless Steel Hostess Serving Utensil Set

A dressy set with the piece most hostess sets leave out: a flat lasagna server.

Hudson Essentials lists eight pieces: a 12-inch cake knife, a cake server, a lasagna server, a serving fork, a serving spoon, a slotted serving spoon, a sugar spoon and a butter spreader. The lasagna server is the useful surprise. A pan of enchiladas, a chilaquiles casserole or a tres leches cake all come out in neat squares with a wide, flat server, where a spoon tears them apart.

According to the listing, every piece is food-grade 18/10 stainless steel, and the handles are hammered with a smooth mirror finish. Hudson Essentials describes the pieces as heavy, with classic curves and good balance, and the title says the set is dishwasher safe.

The listing gives only the cake knife’s length, not the other pieces’, and there is no ladle in the box, so pair it with a ladle for salsa or soup. Like the Lenox, this is a table set rather than a chafing-dish set, and it is at its best on a dinner table or a short sideboard buffet.

Why we like it

  • Lasagna server, cake server and cake knife included
  • Solid and slotted serving spoons
  • 18/10 stainless steel, hammered mirror-finish handles (listing)
  • Dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model Not stated

Material/finish 18/10 stainless steel, hammered handles, mirror finish
Dishwasher-safe Yes (listing title)
Heat-safe Not stated; all stainless steel
Best for Enchilada pans, cakes, holiday tables

Why we recommend it

It is the most practical of the dressy sets for a Mexican party table that ends in a cake, because the lasagna server handles the pan of enchiladas and the cake knife and server handle dessert.

Skip it if you need a ladle or prefer a plain, straight handle. The hammered design is decorative, and buyers who want a simple restaurant look may prefer the Oneida or the Winco.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Lasagna server for casseroles
  • Cake knife and server included
  • 18/10 stainless steel
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Most lengths not stated
  • No ladle
  • Hammered handle will not suit every table

4. Gourmet Settings Silver Tear 5-Piece Hostess Set – Twisted Handles, Simple Set

Best small setGourmet Settings - 5-Pieces Hostess Silverware Set - Silver Tear Collection - Polished Metal Flatware Serving Set - Stainless Steel Kitchen Utensils Knife/Fork/Spoons

A small, good-looking set for an everyday table, from a brand that makes mostly flatware.

The Silver Tear set has five pieces, according to the listing: a serving spoon, a slotted spoon, a serving fork, a sugar spoon and a butter knife. There is no ladle and no cake server, so it is a set for plates and bowls rather than soups and desserts. The twisted, mirror-polished handles are its signature, and they make the set look more expensive than its plain spoon bowls.

Gourmet Settings describes the steel as 18/10 and the set as dishwasher safe. The listing is inconsistent about the warranty, mentioning both 25 years and 50 years in different places, so check the paperwork in the box rather than relying on either number.

For a family dinner of rice, beans and a guisado, the serving spoon, slotted spoon and fork are the working pieces. Add a separate ladle if you serve caldo or pozole.

Why we like it

  • Twisted, mirror-polished handles
  • Solid spoon, slotted spoon and serving fork
  • 18/10 stainless steel (listing)
  • Dishwasher safe

Why we recommend it

It is a simple, attractive set for a small household that wants matching serving pieces on the table without buying a full buffet kit.

Skip it if you need a ladle or a cake server. Neither is included, and the listing gives conflicting warranty terms.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Distinctive twisted handles
  • 18/10 stainless steel
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Slotted spoon included

Cons

  • No ladle or cake server
  • Warranty terms inconsistent on the listing

5. KINGSTONE 8-Piece 18/10 Serving Utensils Set – Tongs and Cake Server Included

Best all-in-one buffet setKINGSTONE 8 piece Large Hostess Serving Utensils Set

The set that puts tongs, spoons, a ladle and a cake server in one box, with lengths you can plan around.

KINGSTONE lists eight pieces: two slotted spoons and two serving spoons at 9.84 inches, a 10-inch serving fork, a 10.62-inch pair of serving tongs, a 10.9-inch cake server and an 8.46-inch gravy ladle. That is the most complete kit on this list for a party buffet. The tongs handle flautas, fajita strips, grilled nopales and warm tortillas; the two solid spoons go in the rice and the refried beans; the slotted spoons lift beans or corn out of their liquid.

The listing describes the steel as 18/10, mirror polished and dishwasher safe, and calls the pieces heavy duty with polished edges. Most hostess sets stop at about 9 inches; at nearly 10 inches these spoons reach the bottom of a standard chafing-dish pan more comfortably.

KINGSTONE is an online brand rather than a long-established flatware maker, and there is no warranty stated on the listing. Buy it for the piece count and the stated lengths, not for a matching flatware pattern.

Why we like it

  • Eight pieces including tongs, a cake server and a ladle
  • Lengths listed for every piece, about 10 inches for the spoons
  • Two solid and two slotted spoons
  • 18/10 stainless steel, dishwasher safe (listing)

Key specifications

Material/finish 18/10 stainless steel, mirror polish
Dishwasher-safe Yes (listing)
Heat-safe Not stated; all stainless steel
Best for Party buffets and chafing dishes

Why we recommend it

For a birthday, a graduation or a posada buffet, it is the most complete set here: two pairs of spoons, tongs, a fork, a ladle and a cake server, at lengths that suit deep pans.

Skip it if you want a recognized flatware brand or a stated warranty. KINGSTONE gives neither on the listing.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Tongs and cake server included
  • Lengths stated for every piece
  • 18/10 stainless steel
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • No warranty stated
  • Less established brand
  • Gravy ladle is short for soup

6. Hiware 8-Piece Serving Spoon Set – A Spoon for Every Bowl

Best for a taco barHiware 8-Piece Serving Set - Includes 4 Spoons and 4 Slotted Spoons

Eight matching spoons, which is exactly what a taco bar with eight toppings needs.

Hiware sells this as four serving spoons and four slotted serving spoons, each 8.6 inches long with a bowl about 2.9 by 2.1 inches, according to the listing. That smaller bowl is the point. On a taco bar the spoons sit in pico de gallo, pickled onions, guacamole, crema, shredded lettuce, cotija and salsas, and a smaller spoon gives a sensible portion for one taco instead of a heap that slides off the tortilla. The slotted spoons are the right tool for pico and pickled jalapeños, letting the juice drain back into the bowl.

The listing describes the steel as 18/8 rather than 18/10, mirror polished and dishwasher safe. 18/8 has slightly less nickel than 18/10; both are common food-service stainless grades. The 8.6-inch length suits bowls and shallow dishes, but it is short for a deep chafing pan, so pair it with longer spoons for the hot dishes.

Why we like it

  • Eight spoons: four solid, four slotted
  • Small 2.9 x 2.1-inch bowls suit toppings and salsas
  • Mirror-polished 18/8 stainless steel (listing)
  • Dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model G8spoons

Length 8.6 in; bowl 2.9 x 2.1 in
Material/finish 18/8 stainless steel, mirror polish
Dishwasher-safe Yes (listing)
Heat-safe Not stated; all stainless steel
Best for Taco bar toppings and salsas

Why we recommend it

It solves the most common taco-bar problem, running out of spoons, with a matching set sized for toppings. Our guide to taco bar supplies lists what goes in those bowls.

Skip it if you need long spoons for deep hot pans. At 8.6 inches they are better for bowls than for hotel pans.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Eight matching spoons
  • Portion-sized bowls
  • Slotted spoons drain pico and pickles
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Short for deep chafing pans
  • 18/8 rather than 18/10 steel
  • No tongs or ladle

7. Winco 11-3/4-inch Solid Serving Spoon – Restaurant Reach for Deep Pans

Best restaurant-style spoonWinco 11 3/4" Solid Stainless Steel Serving Spoon

The kind of spoon you see on a restaurant line or a catering buffet: long, plain and built in one piece.

Winco is a food-service supplier, and this 11-3/4-inch spoon is sold for catering and buffet service. The listing describes it as stainless steel in one-piece construction with a hollow handle, which keeps it lighter in the hand over a long service. The length is its main advantage: it reaches the bottom corners of a full-depth hotel pan in a chafing dish without your knuckles touching the hot food, which hostess spoons of 8 to 9 inches often cannot.

For a home party with arroz, frijoles charros and a pan of chile colorado or tinga, a solid spoon this size scoops a full portion in one movement. Winco sells a matching slotted version (model BW-SL2) for beans served from their broth or calabacitas, and buying one of each covers most hot pans.

This is a single spoon, not a set, and the listing does not state whether it is dishwasher safe or which grade of stainless steel it uses. It looks utilitarian rather than decorative.

Why we like it

  • 11-3/4 inches long for deep hotel pans
  • One-piece stainless construction (listing)
  • Hollow handle to keep weight down
  • Matching slotted spoon sold separately

Key specifications

Model BW-SS1

Length 11-3/4 in
Material/finish Stainless steel, polished; grade not stated
Dishwasher-safe Not stated
Heat-safe Not stated; all stainless steel
Best for Chafing dishes and catering pans

Why we recommend it

Buy two or three for the hot side of a buffet. They are the right length for chafing dishes and plain enough that nobody worries about them getting knocked around. Our guide to the best chafing dish covers the pans they go in.

Skip it if you want serving pieces that match your flatware. This is a working spoon with no decorative finish.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Long reach
  • One-piece construction
  • Matching slotted version available
  • Made for food service

Cons

  • Sold singly
  • Dishwasher use not stated
  • Steel grade not stated

8. OXO Steel Serving Spoon – Kitchen to Table in One Spoon

Best single spoonOXO Steel Serving Spoon

One well-made spoon that works at the stove and at the table, for a household that does not need a full set.

OXO describes this as a stainless steel serving spoon with a comfortable handle and a non-slip touchpoint, sleek enough to use in the kitchen and at the table, and dishwasher safe. The non-slip point is useful with oily dishes: a spoon handle slick with the fat from chorizo con papas or carnitas is easy to drop into the pan.

It is the simplest way to fix a set that is missing a piece, or to add a spoon for the one extra dish at a family dinner. OXO sells a matching cooking spoon and other Steel tools in the same style if you want more.

OXO does not state the length or the steel grade on the listing, and as a single spoon it will not cover a buffet by itself.

Why we like it

  • Stainless steel head with a non-slip touchpoint on the handle
  • Designed for both cooking and serving
  • Dishwasher safe (listing)
  • Matching OXO Steel tools available

Key specifications

Model 3121000
Set Single spoon
Pieces 1
Length Not stated
Material/finish Stainless steel head; handle with non-slip touchpoint
Dishwasher-safe Yes (listing)
Heat-safe Not stated
Best for Small households, filling a gap in a set

Why we recommend it

It suits a small kitchen that serves straight from the pot to the table, and anyone who needs one extra spoon that is easier to hold than a plain steel one.

Skip it if you are setting a buffet. One spoon will not go far, and a set gives you matching pieces for less fuss.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Non-slip touchpoint
  • Works for cooking and serving
  • Dishwasher safe
  • From an established brand

Cons

  • Single spoon
  • Length not stated
  • Steel grade not stated

9. Staub Silicone Serving Spoon – Safe on Enamel and Nonstick

Best for serving from the potStaub Serving Spoon

A spoon for serving straight from an enameled Dutch oven or a nonstick pan without scratching it.

Staub, which makes enameled cast iron cocottes, sells this spoon with a BPA-free matte black silicone head and an acacia wood handle with a hanging loop. The listing says the silicone is food safe, resistant to high temperatures and safe on all cookware surfaces, including nonstick, and recommends hand washing. Lehman’s, a U.S. retailer, lists it at 12 inches long and heat resistant up to 446°F (230°C); Staub’s own Amazon listing gives no number.

This is the spoon for a pot of frijoles, a cazuela of mole or a Dutch oven of birria that goes to the table as it is. Metal spoons scraping enamel or nonstick can mark the surface, and a silicone head avoids that.

It is a single spoon, it needs hand washing because of the wood handle, and a dark silicone head looks less formal than steel on a dressed table.

Why we like it

  • Silicone head safe on enamel and nonstick (listing)
  • Heat resistant to 446°F, per a U.S. retailer
  • Acacia wood handle with a hanging loop
  • About 12 inches long (retailer)

Key specifications

Model 40503-107
Set Single spoon
Pieces 1
Length 12 in (retailer)
Material/finish BPA-free silicone head, acacia wood handle
Dishwasher-safe Hand wash recommended
Heat-safe Silicone “resistant to high temperatures” (Staub); 446°F (230°C) per retailer
Best for Serving from enameled cast iron and nonstick

Why we recommend it

If your beans, rice or guisado go to the table in the pot they cooked in, this protects that pot. The long handle also suits deep Dutch ovens.

Skip it if you want a dishwasher-safe set. This is a single, hand-wash spoon.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Protects enamel and nonstick
  • Stated heat resistance
  • Long handle
  • Hanging loop for storage

Cons

  • Hand wash only
  • Single spoon
  • Heat figure comes from a retailer, not the Amazon listing

How to choose serving utensils for a buffet or taco bar

A good set is less about looks than about matching the tools to the food. These are the things a restaurant kitchen thinks about when it sets a line.

1. Count the dishes, then add one

Every dish needs its own spoon, and sharing spoons is how rice ends up in the salsa. Count the hot dishes and the toppings, then add a spare for the one that gets dropped. A typical taco bar has more toppings than people expect: pico de gallo, onions and cilantro, guacamole, crema, cheese, lettuce, two salsas and pickled jalapeños. That is why an eight-spoon set like the Hiware makes sense.

2. Solid, slotted or tongs

  • Solid spoons for rice, refried beans, mashed or saucy dishes, and anything you want served with its sauce, such as chile colorado.
  • Slotted or pierced spoons for beans in broth, calabacitas, corn, pico de gallo and pickled vegetables, where the liquid should stay behind.
  • Tongs for tortillas, flautas, taquitos, fajita strips and grilled vegetables.
  • A ladle for pozole, menudo, caldo and thin salsas. A gravy ladle is too small for soup; our guide to the best ladle covers full-size ones.
  • A cake server for tres leches, flan and the birthday cake.
A dark serving spoon resting in a steel buffet pan of steamed broccoli beside other hot dishes
Each hot pan on a buffet line needs its own spoon.

3. Length for the pan

Hostess serving pieces are usually 8 to 10 inches long, which is fine for bowls and platters. A full-depth chafing-dish pan is deeper, and a short spoon there means fingers close to hot food and steam. For the hot side of a buffet, look for spoons of about 10 inches or more, like the KINGSTONE spoons or the Winco 11-3/4-inch spoon.

4. Steel grade and finish

Most serving pieces are stainless steel described as 18/10, 18/8 or 18/0. The numbers describe the percentages of chromium and nickel in the steel, so 18/0 has essentially no nickel. Every set on this list is stated as 18/10 or 18/8 except the Winco and OXO, whose listings do not give a grade. A mirror finish looks dressy but shows water spots; dry the pieces after washing if that bothers you.

5. Dishwasher or hand wash

After a party, dishwasher-safe pieces save a lot of time. All of the stainless sets here are listed as dishwasher safe. The Staub spoon is hand wash because of its wood handle, and Winco’s listing does not say either way.

6. Matching the table

If your everyday forks and knives are Oneida Easton or Lenox Portola, the serving pieces in the same pattern will match. Our guide to the best flatware sets covers the place settings themselves.

How we chose these nine serving sets

We started from what a working Mexican kitchen needs on a buffet line: enough spoons for every dish, the right mix of solid, slotted, tongs and ladle, and lengths that suit both bowls and deep hot pans. We then looked for serving sets and single spoons sold on Amazon in the United States from identifiable brands, and checked each one’s stock, pieces, material and care with the Amazon product data. Specifications come from the brand’s own Amazon listing, which each review names; for the Staub spoon, the heat rating comes from a U.S. retailer, Lehman’s, because the Amazon listing gives no figure. We left out sets from sellers with no identifiable brand, listings that contradicted themselves on what was in the box, and products that were out of stock or nearly sold out when we checked. We have not used these utensils ourselves, and nothing here comes from our own testing.

Serving utensil questions, answered

What serving utensils do I need for a Mexican buffet?

At minimum: one solid spoon for each hot dish, a slotted spoon for beans in broth or vegetables, a pair of tongs for tortillas and anything grilled, a ladle if there is soup or a thin salsa, and a small spoon for each topping. A set like the KINGSTONE covers the hot dishes, and a set of small spoons like the Hiware covers the toppings.

Is there a best brand for serving utensils?

No single brand is best for every table. Oneida and Lenox make dressy serving sets that match their flatware patterns, and Hudson Essentials sells a hammered hostess set; Winco makes plain food-service spoons sold for catering; OXO and Staub sell single tools that cross between kitchen and table. Choose by the pieces you need and the length that suits your pans, then by the look.

What is the difference between kitchen utensils and serving utensils?

Kitchen utensils are built for cooking: spatulas, turners and spoons made to stir and flip over heat, often in nylon or silicone. Serving utensils are built to carry food from a dish to a plate and to look presentable on the table, usually in stainless steel. Some tools, such as the OXO and Staub spoons, are designed to do both.

How long should a serving spoon be?

For bowls and platters, 8 to 10 inches is comfortable. For deep chafing-dish pans or a tall pot, longer is better: about 10 to 12 inches keeps your hand away from the steam.

Can stainless serving utensils go in the dishwasher?

The stainless sets on this list are all described as dishwasher safe on their listings. Pieces with wood handles, such as the Staub spoon, should be washed by hand.

Our final pick for serving at home

For most families, the Oneida Easton 6-Piece Serving Set is the one to buy: it covers rice, beans, a guisado and salsa in 18/10 steel that goes in the dishwasher. Add the KINGSTONE set or a couple of long Winco spoons when the party grows, and a set of small spoons for the taco bar.

Serving spoons are only half of a buffet. Our guides to the best serving bowls and the best serving platters cover what the food goes in, and the best hostess gifts list includes serving pieces worth bringing to someone else’s party.
