Contigo sells a confusing number of nearly identical travel mugs, and the names do not help: West Loop, Byron, Huron, Superior, Luxe. The difference that matters most is the lid. Autoseal locks between sips and needs a button pressed each time. SnapSeal is the plainer lid, leak-proof when you close it.
This guide is for people who already want a Contigo and need help choosing. Reviewers disagree about this brand more than most, so we report those disagreements and name a competitor below. To compare Contigo with other makers, read our coffee go mug guide.

Quick verdict: which Contigo travel mug to buy
Buy the Handled Autoseal 16 Ounce: it has the cleanest independent report and a lid that opens fully. For bag-proof sealing on a long day, take the West Loop 20 Ounce, knowing reviewers disagree on it. If the button annoys you, go to the Byron SnapSeal.

Our picks for the best contigo travel mug
Seven models and sizes. We avoided the exact listings already on our other mug guides, and one model repeats in another color with the reason given.
1. Contigo Handled Autoseal Travel Mug, 16 Ounce – A Handle and a Lid That Opens

Of all the Contigo mugs, this is the one with the cleanest independent report. Reviewed names it its best travel mug with a handle, and says it beat its own claims: hot drinks stayed warm after 6 hours, and cold ones stayed chilled for about 16. It calls the mug “virtually leak-proof and spill-proof.” That review was last updated in 2024, and the listing still describes a handled Autoseal mug with an Easy-Clean lid.
Its other advantage is the part that causes most complaints about Contigo: the lid. The listing says this Easy-Clean lid opens completely and goes on the top rack of the dishwasher, which speaks to what reviewers dislike about the West Loop’s lid. The body is hand wash only, as Reviewed points out. The handle makes it a desk mug as well as a car mug, though it still fits most cup holders according to the listing, and you drink from either side of the lid.
Why we like it
- Beat its stated hours in Reviewed’s report
- Lid opens fully for cleaning, per the listing
- Button lock against accidental opening
- Handle and cup holder fit together
Key specifications
| Model | 2028797 |
|---|---|

| Lid | Autoseal, Easy-Clean |
| Hot / cold (listing) | 5 hr / 15 hr |
| Dishwasher | Lid top rack; body hand wash |
| Handle | Yes |
| Size | 2.8 x 2.8 x 10.4 in |
| Warranty | Not stated on this listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits a daily commuter who also carries coffee to a desk and wants an honest chance of keeping the lid clean.
Skip it if you dislike pressing a button for every sip: Autoseal lids work that way.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Strong independent report
- Handle
- Easy-to-clean lid, per the listing
Cons
- Body is hand wash only
- Button for every sip
- Tall at over 10 inches
2. Contigo West Loop Autoseal Travel Mug, 20 Ounce – The Long-Commute Size

The West Loop is the Contigo that reviewers argue about. GearLab makes it its pick for on-the-go drinking and calls it “Spillproof all of the time,” with stellar insulation. America’s Test Kitchen went the other way in 2025, rating the 16-ounce “Not Recommended”: its testers “universally loathed” it, found it hard to close, and measured coffee hot for only 3.5 hours. Reviewed found it held coffee at 150 degrees F from start to finish, with a lid that is difficult to clean.
We report all three because the disagreement is real. The listing now describes an Easy-Clean lid, a tea-bag hook and higher claims, 13 hours hot on this size, and GearLab notes that a 3.0 version with a revised spout has arrived. Those reviews mostly cover earlier versions, so they may not apply fully. Buy this if a sealed, bag-proof mug matters most, since GearLab and Reviewed both praise it for not spilling.
Why we like it
- GearLab and Reviewed both praise its spill protection
- Tea-bag hook inside the lid, per the listing
- Fits under most single-serve brewers, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | 2201663 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 20 oz |
| Lid | Autoseal, Easy-Clean |
| Hot / cold (listing) | 13 hr / 28 hr |
| Dishwasher | Lid top rack; body hand wash |
| Handle | No |
| Size | 3.2 x 3.2 x 9.5 in |
| Warranty | Not stated on this listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits people who toss a full mug in a bag and need confidence that it will not spill.
Skip it if you value an easy mug above all: testers at America’s Test Kitchen disliked this design strongly.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Strong spill protection in two reports
- Long stated hours
- Revised lid, per the listing
Cons
- Reviewers disagree on heat
- Small opening, per GearLab
- Press for every sip
3. Contigo West Loop Autoseal Travel Mug, 24 Ounce – The Biggest West Loop

This is the same design at the largest size we found: 24 ounces, with a stated 16 hours hot and 32 hours cold, the highest figures on this page. It suits a long shift or a road trip, or anyone who wants one fill to last. It uses the same kind of lid and has the same trade-offs as the 20-ounce, including the button you press for every sip.
At 10.6 inches it is tall, so measure under your coffee machine despite the listing’s claim that it fits most single-serve brewers. A big mug also takes longer to drink, and a stated hot figure is a maker’s claim, so judge it from your own habits. We read no review of this exact size.
Why we like it
- Largest capacity on this page
- Highest stated hours here
- Top-rack lid, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | 2205359 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 24 oz |
| Lid | Autoseal, Easy-Clean |
| Hot / cold (listing) | 16 hr / 32 hr |
| Dishwasher | Lid top rack; body hand wash |
| Handle | No |
| Size | 3.1 x 3.1 x 10.6 in |
| Warranty | Not stated on this listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits shift workers and long-distance drivers who want one fill to carry them.
Skip it if your cup holder or brewer has limited height; this is a tall mug.
Pros and cons
Pros
- One fill lasts
- Long stated hours
- Leak-proof claim on the listing
Cons
- Tall
- Press for every sip
- No review of this size that we read

4. Contigo Byron 2.0 SnapSeal Travel Mug, 16 Ounce – Simpler Lid, Less Fuss

If the Autoseal button annoys you, try SnapSeal, which the listing describes as one-handed drinking with no caps to remove. America’s Test Kitchen rated a 16-ounce Contigo SnapSeal mug “Recommended,” calling it “inexpensive and leakproof,” though testers found it hard to open and close. The test does not name the Byron, so it speaks to the SnapSeal lid rather than this exact model. The listing says it is leak-proof when closed and holds drinks hot up to 6 hours or cold up to 12.
The 20-ounce Byron 2.0 appears in our coffee go mug guide, so we pick the 16 and 24 here rather than repeat it. The 16-ounce fits most cup holders and sits under most single-serve brewers, according to the listing. Only the lid goes in the dishwasher, on the top rack. The listing’s dimensions look wrong, so we do not repeat them.
Why we like it
- SnapSeal rated Recommended by America’s Test Kitchen
- One-handed drinking, per the listing
- Fits most cup holders, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | 2198370 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Lid | SnapSeal |
| Hot / cold (listing) | 6 hr / 12 hr |
| Dishwasher | Lid top rack; body hand wash |
| Handle | Not stated |
| Size | Not reliably stated |
| Warranty | Not stated on this listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits people who want a plainer Contigo.
Skip it if you need it to travel with the lid open; it is leak-proof only when closed.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Fits under brewers, per the listing
- Simple
- Light
Cons
- Hard to open and close, per the SnapSeal test
- Shorter hours
- Not leak-proof when open
5. Contigo Byron 2.0 SnapSeal Travel Mug, 24 Ounce – Big, Plain and Lidded

The same idea in a size that holds a lot more coffee. The listing gives a stated 9 hours hot and 21 hours cold, a subtly textured handle and fit in most car cup holders. It also shows a limited lifetime warranty on this listing, which most of the others do not state.
A big one-handed mug is a good match for iced drinks, including cold brew or an iced cafe de olla. Again, it is leak-proof, not spill-proof, so close it before it goes in a bag. We read no independent test of this size, so it rests on the listing and on the SnapSeal report above.
Why we like it
- Listing states 9 hours hot, 21 cold
- Limited lifetime warranty on this listing
- Textured handle, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | 2169253 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 24 oz |
| Lid | SnapSeal |
| Hot / cold (listing) | 9 hr / 21 hr |
| Dishwasher | Not stated on this listing |
| Handle | Yes, per listing |
| Size | 3.2 x 3.2 x 9.8 in |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime |
Why we recommend it
It suits someone who wants a large mug for iced drinks and dislikes the Autoseal button.
Skip it if you need a mug for hot coffee over a whole day; the West Loop states longer hours.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Large capacity
- Warranty stated
- Easy one-handed drinking, per the listing
Cons
- Listing-only evidence for this size
- Close the lid before bagging it
- Tall for some brewers
6. Contigo Superior 2.0 SnapSeal Travel Mug, 20 Ounce – A Middle Size SnapSeal

The Superior sits between the two Byron sizes at 20 ounces. It states 7 hours hot and 18 hours cold, and fits car cup holders and most single-serve brewers according to the listing. The lid goes on the top rack and the body is hand wash only.
The listing’s warranty field says “No Applicable Warranty” while a bullet says limited lifetime guarantee, so confirm with Contigo if that matters to you. We read no independent test of the Superior itself. Choose it over the Handled Autoseal if you dislike pressing a button, and accept that it lacks that mug’s strong independent report.
Why we like it
- Stated 7 hours hot, 18 cold
- Fits most brewers, per the listing
- One-handed drinking, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | 2094864 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 20 oz |
| Lid | SnapSeal |
| Hot / cold (listing) | 7 hr / 18 hr |
| Dishwasher | Lid top rack; body hand wash |
| Handle | Not stated |
| Size | 3.3 x 4.9 x 8.5 in |
| Warranty | Listing conflicts; confirm |
Why we recommend it
It suits people who want a SnapSeal mug bigger than 16 ounces but not as tall as the 24.
Skip it if the warranty matters to you, because the listing gives two different answers.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Mid-size
- Simple lid
- Fits brewers, per the listing
Cons
- Warranty listing conflicts
- Listing-only evidence
- Leak-proof only when closed
7. Contigo Luxe Autoseal Travel Mug, 16 Ounce – Top-Rack Safe, Body and Lid

Most Contigo bodies must be hand washed. The Luxe listing says both body and lid are safe on the top rack, and the underside of the lid opens for cleaning. That is the reason this model is on the page, and also why we repeat it in another color from our hot drinks tumbler guide: no other Contigo here solves that problem.
It gives up some insulation for it, at a stated 5 hours hot and 12 cold, and it is the lightest here on the listing. It uses the Autoseal button with a lock, so it shares that lid’s habit of needing a press for every sip. We read no independent test of this model.
Why we like it
- Body and lid both top-rack safe, per the listing
- Underside of the lid opens
- Light, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | 2063413 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Lid | Autoseal with lock |
| Hot / cold (listing) | 5 hr / 12 hr |
| Dishwasher | Body and lid, top rack |
| Handle | Not stated |
| Size | 2.9 x 2.9 x 8.4 in |
| Warranty | Not stated on this listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits anyone who will not hand wash a mug.
Skip it if hours matter most; the West Loop states far longer.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Dishwasher-friendly body
- Openable lid
- Light
Cons
- Shorter stated hours
- Button for every sip
- Repeats a model from another guide
Where Contigo falls short, and who to look at instead
- Lid cleaning. GearLab says the West Loop lid is complicated, with many moving parts that do not disassemble, and that is where it marked it lowest. Reviewed agrees it is difficult to clean. Newer Easy-Clean lids aim to fix this, but we read no test of whether they do.
- Heat retention disagreement. America’s Test Kitchen measured 3.5 hours for the West Loop, while Contigo’s newer listings claim far longer. Those may be different versions, and you should not expect the listed figure.
- A named rival. America’s Test Kitchen’s winner is the Zojirushi Stainless Mug SM-SHE48. If heat and easy drinking matter most, that is the one to look at first. Our hot drinks tumbler guide covers more.
- Body washing. Only the Luxe here says its body can go in the dishwasher. Most of the rest say hand wash.

How to choose a Contigo mug
1. Decide on the lid first
Autoseal seals itself between sips, which is great in a bag and annoying at a desk, as GearLab notes. SnapSeal is leak-proof once you close it, according to the listings. Everything else is secondary.
2. Measure your brewer and cup holder
Many listings say these fit most cup holders and single-serve brewers. Heights here run from about 8.4 to 10.6 inches, so check your own clearance.
3. Discount the hours
Listed hot times here run from 5 to 16 hours. America’s Test Kitchen’s 3.5-hour result shows how far a kitchen measurement can fall below what you might assume. Preheating with hot water is our own suggestion, and it cannot hurt, but do not expect cafe heat at the end of the day.

4. Consider what you drink
GearLab points out that a small opening suits hot drinks and is poor for cool ones you want to gulp. For cold brew or an iced cafe de olla, a larger SnapSeal mug may be more pleasant, though that is our judgment and not a test result.
How we chose these seven mugs
We pulled Contigo listings from the Amazon API on November 3, 2026, kept those new, in plain stock and sold by Amazon, and chose by model and size, not color. We left out two-packs, a four-pack and exact listings on other pages. We read Reviewed’s travel mug roundup, America’s Test Kitchen’s 2025 test and GearLab’s tumbler review. CNN’s review would not open, so we do not cite it. We also searched the CPSC recall database. We did not test anything ourselves.
Contigo mug questions, answered
What is the difference between Autoseal and SnapSeal?
Autoseal stays sealed until you press a button, and locks again between sips, according to the listings. SnapSeal is a lid that is leak-proof when you close it.
Do Contigo mugs really not leak?
GearLab and Reviewed both praise the West Loop’s Autoseal for spill protection, and Reviewed calls the Handled version virtually leak-proof. SnapSeal listings say leak-proof when closed.
Can Contigo travel mugs go in the dishwasher?
Mostly just the lids, on the top rack. The Luxe is the exception here, with body and lid both top-rack safe, according to its listing.
Have Contigo mugs been recalled?
The CPSC recalls we found for Contigo, from 2019 and reannounced in 2020, cover Kids Cleanable water bottles for a spout choking hazard, not these travel mugs. Search cpsc.gov for your own product.
Our final pick from the Contigo range
Start with the Handled Autoseal, then decide whether the button suits you. If it does not, buy SnapSeal, and if heat matters most, look at the Zojirushi. And when a commute ends with no time to cook, call to order from Julia’s at (346) 546-8283.
