A coffee go mug has a simple brief: carry hot coffee from the kitchen to the car, the bus or the desk without spilling it in your bag, and keep it hot long enough to finish. Most mugs keep coffee hot. Fewer have a lid that stays shut when the mug rolls across a car seat, and fewer still are easy to clean after a week of coffee with milk or a cinnamon-heavy café de olla.
This guide covers nine travel mugs from Zojirushi, Contigo, Fellow, OXO, Thermos, Stanley, YETI, Hydro Flask and Ember, picked for commuting with hot coffee. For each we list the capacity, what the maker says about the lid, the heat retention the maker states, whether it fits a cup holder or under a coffee machine, dishwasher care, and any lead statement we could confirm. Where the maker does not say, we write “Not stated”. Straw tumblers for iced drinks are covered in our separate guide to the best tumbler, and we have not repeated its picks here.

Quick verdict: which travel mug to buy
For most commutes, the best coffee go mug is the Zojirushi 16-ounce Stainless Steel Mug: Zojirushi rates it at 187°F after an hour and 154°F after six, and its flip lid has a lock so it does not open by accident. For less money, the Contigo Byron 2.0 has a leak-proof lid when closed, fits car cup holders and slides under most single-serve brewers. If coffee tasting of metal bothers you, the Fellow Carter Move has a ceramic interior, and if you want coffee held at an exact temperature, the heated Ember Tumbler 2 does that.
The five standouts are compared below, one for each kind of commuter, and all nine mugs are reviewed in full after the table.

Our picks for the best coffee go mug
All nine of these mugs are vacuum insulated or heated, and all nine have a lid the maker describes as leak-proof, leakproof when closed, or locking. They differ in size, in how you drink from them, and in how much care they need at the sink. Each pick says who it suits and gives one honest reason to skip it.
1. Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug, 16 oz – Coffee Still Hot Hours Later

Zojirushi is one of the few travel-mug makers that publishes heat retention as temperatures rather than hours. For this 16-ounce mug, model SM-KHE48 (linked here in Smoky Blue), it gives 187°F after one hour and 154°F after six, starting from water at 203°F in a 68°F room. Cold drinks are rated at 48°F after six hours. For a commuter that means coffee still too hot to gulp at the office and still warm at lunch.
The lid flips open with one button and, according to Zojirushi, has a safety lock to stop it opening by accident in a bag. The interior is 18/8 stainless steel with Zojirushi’s slick finish, the mouth is wide enough for ice and a brush, and Zojirushi lists the mug at 2-5/8 by 2-7/8 by 9-1/8 inches, slim and tall.
The listing gives a five-year warranty on heat retention. It does not say the mug is dishwasher safe, so plan to wash it by hand.
Why we like it
- Heat retention published as temperatures
- Flip lid with a safety lock
- Slim body and wide mouth
- Five-year heat-retention warranty
Key specifications
| Mug | Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug (SM-KHE48) |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz (0.48 L) |
| Lid (maker’s claim) | Flip-open lid with safety lock |
| Heat retention (as stated) | 187°F at 1 hr; 154°F at 6 hrs |
| Fits cup holder/coffee machine | Not stated; 2-5/8 x 2-7/8 x 9-1/8 in. |
| Dishwasher-safe | Not stated; hand wash |
| Lead/seal statement | None on the listing |
| Warranty | Five years on heat retention |
Why we recommend it
It suits a long commute or a workday where the coffee sits for hours, and anyone who wants a lid that will not pop open in a backpack.
Skip it if everything you own goes in the dishwasher. Zojirushi’s listing does not say this mug can.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Strong stated heat retention
- Locking lid
- Slim and light to carry
- Long heat-retention warranty
Cons
- Hand wash
- Cup holder fit not stated
- No handle
2. Contigo Byron 2.0 Travel Mug, 20 oz – Fits the Car and the Coffee Maker

The Byron 2.0 is Contigo’s simple commuter mug. Its SnapSeal lid is leak-proof when closed, according to Contigo, and you drink one-handed without removing a cap or a lid that can get lost. The 20-ounce size holds a full cup and then some.
Contigo’s THERMALOCK double-wall insulation is rated to keep drinks hot for up to seven hours or cold for up to eighteen. The mug fits car cup holders and, usefully for anyone with a pod machine, under most single-serve brewers, so you can brew straight into it. A lightly textured grip helps you hold it on the move.
Care is split: the lid is top-rack dishwasher safe, the body is hand wash. Contigo backs it with a limited lifetime guarantee. Contigo’s past CPSC recalls were for children’s water bottles, not this mug.
Why we like it
- Leak-proof SnapSeal lid when closed
- Fits cup holders and most single-serve brewers
- One-handed drinking
- Limited lifetime guarantee
Key specifications
| Mug | Contigo Byron 2.0 (2094850) |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 20 oz |
| Lid (maker’s claim) | SnapSeal, leak-proof when closed |
| Heat retention (as stated) | Hot up to 7 hrs; cold up to 18 hrs |
| Fits cup holder/coffee machine | Car cup holders and most single-serve brewers |
| Dishwasher-safe | Lid top rack; body hand wash |
| Lead/seal statement | None on the listing |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime guarantee |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you drive to work, brew with a pod machine and want a simple mug that costs less than most here.
Skip it if your coffee needs to stay hot all day. Contigo states seven hours, against twelve for the Fellow, OXO and Hydro Flask.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Fits under pod brewers
- Large 20 oz size
- Simple one-handed lid
Cons
- Body is hand wash only
- Shorter stated hot time
- No handle

3. Fellow Carter Move Travel Mug, 16 oz – Ceramic Inside, No Metallic Taste

The Carter Move is for people who brew good coffee and want it to taste the same in the car. Fellow coats the inside with ceramic, which it says keeps coffee free of lingering oils, odors and metallic notes. The lip is thin and tapered, modeled on a wine glass, so it drinks more like a cup than a sippy lid.
A quick twist locks the lid, which Fellow calls leak-proof, and a removable splash guard steadies the coffee when the lid is off on a bumpy ride. Fellow rates the double-wall stainless body to keep drinks hot for up to twelve hours or cold for twenty-four, and says the slim shape fits most car cup holders.
It is dishwasher safe, and the body also takes Fellow’s Carter Slide and Carry lids if you want a different way to drink. The 16-ounce size holds a standard large coffee.
Why we like it
- Ceramic-coated interior
- Thin, tapered drinking lip
- Leak-proof twist lid and splash guard
- Dishwasher safe
Key specifications
| Mug | Fellow Carter Move (473 ml) |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Lid (maker’s claim) | Leak-proof twist lid; removable splash guard |
| Heat retention (as stated) | Hot up to 12 hrs; cold up to 24 hrs |
| Fits cup holder/coffee machine | Most car cup holders; brewer fit not stated |
| Dishwasher-safe | Yes |
| Lead/seal statement | None on the listing |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits a pour-over or espresso drinker who notices off flavors and wants a mug that drinks like a cup, not a spout.
Skip it if you want to drink through a closed lid. You twist the lid off to sip, so it is not a one-handed mug for driving.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Clean taste, per Fellow
- Long stated hot time
- Dishwasher safe
Cons
- Lid comes off to drink
- Warranty not in listing
- No handle
4. Thermos Stainless King Travel Mug with Handle, 16 oz – A Mug You Can Hold Like a Mug

The Stainless King is Thermos’s travel mug with a handle, which makes it easier to carry from the kitchen to the car with a bag in the other hand. Its DrinkLock lid is leak-proof, according to Thermos, and the mug fits most standard-size cup holders.
Thermos rates its vacuum insulation to keep drinks hot for up to seven hours and cold for up to eighteen. The outside stays cool to the touch with hot coffee and does not sweat with iced drinks, and a built-in hook holds a tea bag string in place if you take tea instead.
The mug comes apart for cleaning and is dishwasher safe, with the top rack recommended. Thermos backs it with a five-year limited warranty. Thermos’s recall of Stainless King food jars and Sportsman bottles in April 2026 covered models SK3000, SK3020 and SK3010, whose stoppers can eject; this SK1000 travel mug is not one of them.
Why we like it
- Handle for carrying
- Leak-proof DrinkLock lid
- Fits most cup holders
- Dishwasher safe, five-year warranty
Key specifications
| Mug | Thermos Stainless King (SK1000) |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Lid (maker’s claim) | Leak-proof DrinkLock lid |

| Fits cup holder/coffee machine | Most standard cup holders; brewer fit not stated |
| Dishwasher-safe | Yes, top rack recommended |
| Lead/seal statement | None on the listing |
| Warranty | Five-year limited |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you walk or take transit and like holding coffee by a handle, or if you want a mug that also goes in the dishwasher.
Skip it if you need coffee hot all day. Thermos rates it for seven hours, well short of the Zojirushi or Fellow.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Easy to carry
- Dishwasher safe
- Five-year warranty
Cons
- Shorter stated hot time
- Handle can crowd a tight cup holder
5. OXO Good Grips Travel Coffee Mug, 16 oz – Twist to Open, Easy to Clean Lid

OXO’s travel mug is built around its SimplyClean lid. You twist the top to open and close the drinking opening, and OXO says a leakproof seal prevents drips and spills. The lid’s name points at its main idea: fewer hidden parts for coffee and milk to collect in.
OXO’s BetterTemp vacuum insulation is rated to keep drinks hot for twelve hours and cold for twenty-four, and the mug is sized to fit most cup holders. The body is professional-grade stainless steel.
The Amazon listing does not say whether the mug or lid goes in the dishwasher, so we have left that as not stated. OXO stands behind it with the OXO Better Guarantee, which offers a repair or replacement if something goes wrong.
Why we like it
- Twist-open leakproof lid
- Hot for 12 hours, per OXO
- Fits most cup holders
- OXO Better Guarantee
Key specifications
| Mug | OXO Good Grips Travel Coffee Mug (11321400) |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Lid (maker’s claim) | Leakproof SimplyClean twist lid |
| Heat retention (as stated) | Hot 12 hrs; cold 24 hrs |
| Fits cup holder/coffee machine | Most cup holders; brewer fit not stated |
| Dishwasher-safe | Not stated |
| Lead/seal statement | None on the listing |
| Warranty | OXO Better Guarantee |
Why we recommend it
It suits a daily latte or café con leche drinker who has fought with flip lids that trap milk, and who wants long stated heat retention.
Skip it if you need a confirmed dishwasher-safe mug. The listing does not say.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Simple twist lid
- Long stated hot time
- Repair or replace guarantee
Cons
- Dishwasher care not stated
- Few published specifications
6. Stanley Transit Flip Top Mug, 16 oz – Light Enough to Forget in a Bag

Stanley’s Transit Flip Top is a slim commuter mug, and its selling point is weight: Stanley says its AeroLight spun-steel construction makes it 33 percent lighter than standard stainless steel bottles. The flip-top lid opens to sip and locks shut, and Stanley calls it leakproof in bags, backpacks and cup holders.
Stanley rates the double-wall vacuum insulation at up to six hours hot, eight hours cold and thirty hours iced, and the whole mug is dishwasher safe. It is made with 18/8 recycled stainless steel and is BPA-free.
A note on Stanley’s recall. In December 2024, Stanley recalled about 2.6 million Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs because the lid threads could shrink with heat and torque and the lid could detach, a burn hazard. The Transit Flip Top is a different, newer model and is not part of that recall. The listing has no lead statement, but Stanley’s FAQ says it uses an industry-standard pellet to seal the vacuum insulation, that the sealing material includes lead, and that once sealed the area is covered with a durable stainless steel layer, making it inaccessible to consumers.
Why we like it
- 33 percent lighter, per Stanley
- Leakproof flip-top lid
- Fully dishwasher safe
- Cup holder compatible
Key specifications
| Mug | Stanley Transit Flip Top Mug |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Lid (maker’s claim) | Leakproof flip-top lid |
| Heat retention (as stated) | Hot 6 hrs; cold 8 hrs; iced 30 hrs |
| Fits cup holder/coffee machine | Cup holders; brewer fit not stated |
| Dishwasher-safe | Yes, fully |
| Lead/seal statement | Sealing pellet includes lead, covered by a steel layer (Stanley FAQ) |
| Warranty | Not stated in the listing |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if weight matters, you carry your mug in a backpack all day, and you want everything to go in the dishwasher.
Skip it if you need hot coffee for a long shift. Six hours is the shortest stated hot time among the unheated mugs here.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Light for its size
- Dishwasher safe
- Locking flip lid
Cons
- Shortest stated hot time here
- Lead in the sealed base, per Stanley
- New model, little track record

7. YETI Rambler 30 oz Travel Mug – The Big One, With a Magnetic Lid

YETI calls this a “behemoth” travel mug, and at 30 ounces it holds nearly two large coffees. The Stronghold lid twists on and off and uses a dual-slider magnet to close the drinking opening; YETI adds, honestly, that it keeps coffee in “as long as it’s closed.” The lid sits in four positions for right- or left-handed drinking.
The body is 18/8 stainless steel with double-wall vacuum insulation, and a 360-degree welded handle gives you a firm grip; YETI says the mug is cup-holder compatible and dishwasher safe. YETI does not give an hours figure for hot drinks in the listing.
About YETI’s recall: in November 2020, YETI recalled the Rambler 20 oz Travel Mug with Stronghold Lid, only units with date code 34204010 sold at YETI stores and yeti.com that October, because the magnet slider could eject and spill hot contents. This 30-ounce mug is a different size and was not named in that recall. The listing has no lead statement, and YETI’s manufacturing FAQ would not open when we rechecked it, so we found no lead-free statement for this mug and make no claim either way.
Why we like it
- 30 oz capacity
- Magnetic slider lid, left or right hand
- Welded handle, cup-holder compatible
- Dishwasher safe
Key specifications
| Mug | YETI Rambler 30 oz Travel Mug with Stronghold Lid |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 30 oz |
| Lid (maker’s claim) | Stronghold twist lid, dual-slider magnet; holds “as long as it’s closed” |
| Heat retention (as stated) | Not stated in hours |
| Fits cup holder/coffee machine | Cup-holder compatible; brewer fit not stated |
| Dishwasher-safe | Yes |
| Lead/seal statement | None on the listing; no lead-free statement found |
| Warranty | Not stated in the listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits a long drive, a jobsite or a shift where one fill has to last, and anyone who wants a handle and a lid that works for either hand.
Skip it if you want a slim mug for a bag. Thirty ounces is big and heavy when full.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Largest capacity here
- Sturdy welded handle
- Dishwasher safe
Cons
- No stated hot time
- Bulky for a bag
- Earlier 20 oz version had a lid recall
8. Hydro Flask Flex Sip Coffee Tumbler, 16 oz – Bottle Shape, Coffee Lid

Hydro Flask’s Flex Sip coffee mug is a 16-ounce wide-mouth bottle with a lid designed for hot drinks. Hydro Flask says the Flex Sip lid is leakproof when closed: twist it shut and it can go in a bag. It is cupholder compatible.
The double-wall vacuum insulation is rated to keep drinks hot for up to twelve hours and cold for twenty-four, and Hydro Flask’s TempShield keeps the outside cool to the touch. The bottle and lid are dishwasher safe, and Hydro Flask says the stainless steel does not carry flavors from one drink to the next.
The listing has no lead statement, and Hydro Flask’s FAQ would not open when we rechecked it, so we found no lead-free statement for this mug and make no claim either way.
Why we like it
- Leakproof Flex Sip lid when closed
- Hot up to 12 hours, per Hydro Flask
- Dishwasher safe, lid included
- Outside stays cool to the touch, per Hydro Flask
Key specifications
| Mug | Hydro Flask Flex Sip Coffee (W16BCX) |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Lid (maker’s claim) | Flex Sip, leakproof when closed |
| Heat retention (as stated) | Hot up to 12 hrs; cold 24 hrs |
| Fits cup holder/coffee machine | Most cup holders; brewer fit not stated |
| Dishwasher-safe | Yes, bottle and lid |
| Lead/seal statement | None on the listing; no lead-free statement found |
| Warranty | Not stated in the listing |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want one bottle for morning coffee and afternoon water, with a lid that twists shut for the bag.
Skip it if you want to drink straight from a wide cup. The bottle shape and sip lid feel less like a mug than the Fellow or Thermos.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Fully dishwasher safe
- Long stated hot time
- Cupholder compatible
Cons
- Bottle shape, not a mug
- Warranty not in the listing
9. Ember Tumbler 2 Heated Travel Mug, 16 oz – Holds the Temperature You Choose

The Ember Tumbler 2 does not just slow the cooling; it heats. Press the button on the bottom to choose 125, 130, 135, 140 or 145°F, or set it in the Ember app, and the mug holds that temperature. A light panel shows the setting and the battery level.
With the lid on, Ember rates the battery at up to two hours and forty-five minutes away from the charger, and all day on the included charging coaster. It comes with two lids: a leak-proof Handle Lid for the bag or the car and a spill-proof Sliding Lid for sipping. Ember says it holds a full 16 ounces and still fits a standard car cup holder.
Ember lists top-rack dishwasher safety as new for the Tumbler 2. We could not find the Ember Travel Mug 2+ in stock from Ember on Amazon, so this is the Ember pick.
Why we like it
- Five set temperatures, 125 to 145°F
- Works without the app
- Leak-proof Handle Lid plus a Sliding Lid
- Top-rack dishwasher safe
Key specifications
| Mug | Ember Tumbler 2 (TB251617) |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Lid (maker’s claim) | Leak-proof Handle Lid; spill-proof Sliding Lid |
| Heat retention (as stated) | Heated; up to 2 hrs 45 min on battery, all day on coaster |
| Fits cup holder/coffee machine | Standard car cup holder; brewer fit not stated |
| Dishwasher-safe | Yes, top rack |
| Lead/seal statement | None on the listing |
| Warranty | Not stated in the listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits a slow sipper who wants the last mouthful as hot as the first, at a desk or on a short drive, and who will charge it every day.
Skip it if your coffee is away from a charger all day. Once the battery runs out, it is an ordinary insulated mug.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Exact drinking temperature
- Two lids
- Dishwasher safe
Cons
- Battery lasts under three hours
- Needs daily charging
- Electronics add cost
How to choose a coffee travel mug
The best mug for a commute is the one whose lid suits how you travel. These are the things worth checking before you buy.
1. The lid comes first
“Leak-proof” means different things. Some lids are leak-proof only when closed (Contigo, Hydro Flask); some lock (Zojirushi); some come off to drink (Fellow). If the mug rides in a bag, look for a closing lid with a lock. If it rides in a cup holder and you drink while driving, look for a one-handed lid you can open by feel.
2. Heat retention, and how it is measured
Most makers give hours; Zojirushi gives temperatures, which tell you more. Ratings run from six hours hot (Stanley) to twelve (Fellow, OXO, Hydro Flask), and the Ember heats instead of insulating. Preheating the mug with hot water for a minute before you fill it helps any of them.

3. Cup holder and coffee maker fit
Most makers say “fits most cup holders”, but tall, slim mugs and handled mugs fit differently. If you brew with a pod machine, the Contigo Byron 2.0 is the only pick here whose maker says it fits under most single-serve brewers. Our guide to the best single-serve coffee maker covers the machines.
4. Cleaning
Coffee with milk and sugar leaves residue in lid gaskets. Dishwasher-safe bodies and lids (Fellow, Thermos, Stanley, YETI, Hydro Flask, Ember) save effort. Zojirushi’s listing does not say its mug is dishwasher safe, and Contigo’s body is hand wash. Take the lid apart where the maker allows it, and dry the gasket before reassembling.
5. Lead in the seal
None of the listings here says whether the vacuum seal contains lead, and this guide makes no lead-free claim for any mug. Stanley’s FAQ says it uses an industry-standard pellet to seal the vacuum insulation, that the sealing material includes lead, and that once sealed the area is covered with a durable stainless steel layer, making it inaccessible to consumers. The YETI and Hydro Flask FAQs would not open when we rechecked them. If that matters to you, ask the maker before you buy. If a base cap ever comes off and exposes the seal, contact the maker; Stanley says that is eligible for its Lifetime Warranty.
How we chose these nine travel mugs
We started from what a commuter needs: a lid that does not leak in a bag, coffee that stays hot long enough, and a mug that fits the car and is easy to clean. We took capacity, lid claims, heat retention and care from each Amazon listing, and warranty details from the listing or the maker where we could read them. We found no lead-free statement on any listing. Stanley’s lead statement comes from its FAQ; the YETI and Hydro Flask FAQs would not open when we rechecked them in November 2026. Every pick was in stock on Amazon when we checked. We searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall list for every brand here and describe the Stanley and YETI travel-mug recalls in their sections; Contigo’s recalls were for children’s water bottles, Thermos’s most recent was for food jars and bottles rather than its travel mug, OXO’s was for a booster seat, and we found none for Zojirushi, Fellow, Hydro Flask or Ember.
We left out the Stanley Trigger Action mug, because the only Trigger Action listings we found in stock were from other sellers rather than Stanley, and mugs already picked on our tumbler page (the YETI Rambler 20 oz tumbler with MagSlider, Contigo West Loop 3.0 and Zojirushi GoCafe). We have not carried these mugs for this guide; heat and leak claims are the makers’.
Coffee for the road, Mexican style
Café de olla, coffee simmered with piloncillo and canela, travels well in an insulated mug, but strain it well first: fine grounds and cinnamon bits settle in lid gaskets. A sweetened café con leche does the same, so rinse the lid soon after you finish. For iced coffee in summer, the Fellow, OXO and Hydro Flask are each rated cold for 24 hours and the Stanley holds ice for 30, but a straw tumbler may suit you better.

At home, a ceramic mug is still the nicest way to drink coffee; our coffee mug guide covers those, and a drip coffee maker fills a 16- or 20-ounce mug in one brew.
Travel mug questions, answered
What is the best coffee mug to go?
For most commutes, the Zojirushi 16-ounce Stainless Steel Mug, for its stated heat retention and locking lid. The Contigo Byron 2.0 costs less and fits under pod brewers.
Which travel mug keeps coffee hot the longest?
By the makers’ figures, the Fellow Carter Move, OXO and Hydro Flask are rated for up to twelve hours, and Zojirushi rates its mug at 154°F after six hours. The Ember heats coffee but its battery lasts under three hours away from the coaster.
Are travel mugs dishwasher safe?
Some are, some are not. Here the Fellow, Thermos, Stanley, YETI, Hydro Flask and Ember are listed as dishwasher safe; the Contigo body is hand wash, and Zojirushi and OXO do not say.
Do travel mugs contain lead?
None of the listings here says. Stanley’s FAQ says its sealing material includes lead, covered by a stainless steel layer that makes it inaccessible. The YETI and Hydro Flask FAQs would not open when we rechecked them, so we make no claim for those. Ask the maker for its own statement on the mug you plan to buy.
Which Stanley mugs were recalled?
The Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs, recalled in December 2024 because the lid could detach. The Transit Flip Top on this page is a different model.
Our final pick for the commute
