Some of the best carne asada never sees a gas grill. In northern Mexico and across Texas, families cook arrachera and cebollitas over a wood fire in the backyard, and a fire pit with a cooking grate does the same job: the fire you sit around after dinner is the fire you cooked dinner on. Wood coals run hot, give the meat a smoky edge, and leave room at the edge of the grate to warm tortillas.
Not every fire pit is built to cook on, though. Some come with a flimsy grate that sits too close to the flames; others are excellent fire pits that need a separate grill attachment. This guide covers both: fire pits sold with a grate, grill tops and grates made for a specific pit, and swing-arm grates that stake into the ground beside any fire. For each we list the fuel, diameter, grate size, adjustment, material, weight and warranty as the maker or the Amazon listing states them, and write “Not stated” where neither gives a figure.

Quick verdict: which fire pit grill to buy
The best fire pit grill for most backyards is the Breeo X Series 24 Grilling Bundle: a double-walled, made-in-USA fire pit with Breeo’s 304 stainless steel Outpost Grill, which swings a full 360 degrees and adjusts in height so you can move steak toward or away from the heat. On a tighter budget, the Hykolity 35-inch Fire Pit with 2 Cooking Grates adds a charcoal pan and two swiveling grates. If you already own a Solo Stove Yukon, buy the Solo Stove Yukon Grill Top and Hub rather than a new pit; and to cook over a fire you already have, the Stanbroil 24-inch Swivel Grill Grate stakes into the ground beside it.
The table below shows our five standout picks, one for each kind of outdoor cook. All eight are reviewed in full after it.

Our picks for the best fire pit grill
These eight cover the three ways to cook over a fire pit: a pit sold with its own grate, a grill top made for one brand of pit, and a free-standing grate that works over any fire. If you mainly want a fire pit for warmth and only grill now and then, start with our guide to the best fire pit, which covers the wider field.
1. Breeo X Series 24 Grilling Bundle – Swinging Grate Over a Smokeless Pit

Breeo builds the X Series in Pennsylvania as the base of its own live-fire cooking system, and this bundle pairs the 24-inch pit with the piece that turns it into a grill. Breeo gives the X24 an outside diameter of 27.5 inches, and the Amazon listing for the pit alone puts it at 62 pounds. The bundle adds the Outpost Grill, an ash shovel and a lid.
The Outpost Grill is the reason to choose it. A stainless steel rod locks into the pit, and the grate rides on it: Breeo says it offers fully adjustable height and 360-degree rotation, and that it is made of 304 stainless steel. For carne asada that means you can drop the grate low over the coals to sear thin skirt steak, raise it to finish chicken thighs, and swing it out over the rim to flip, add salsa vegetables or pull food off without reaching across the flames.
The pit itself is built for a clean burn. Breeo describes double-wall construction with secondary combustion holes and its patented X Airflow design for fast lighting and a smokeless fire. This version is corten steel, which the listing says develops a rustic patina outdoors. Breeo warns not to set its fire pits directly on heat-sensitive surfaces, so plan on stone, pavers or gravel.
Why we like it
- Outpost Grill adjusts in height and rotates 360 degrees (Breeo)
- 304 stainless steel grate, made in the USA
- Double-wall, secondary-combustion fire pit
- Lid and ash shovel included in the bundle
- Lifetime limited warranty on defects (listing)
Key specifications
| Model | X Series 24 Grilling Bundle (corten) |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Wood |
| Diameter | 27.5 in outside (Breeo) |
| Grate size | Outpost Grill 24, sized for X24 and X30; diameter not stated |
| Grate adjustable | Yes: height and 360° rotation |
| Material | Corten steel pit; 304 stainless steel grate |
| Weight | 62 lb, pit only (listing) |
| Warranty | Lifetime limited on defects, plus 3 years against burn-through and rust-through (listing) |
Why we recommend it
It suits cooks who want one fire to do both jobs, dinner and the evening around the pit, and who will cook on it often enough to use the adjustable grate. The Breeo system also grows: Breeo sells a griddle, a dome and other pieces that mount the same way.
Skip it if you cook over fire a few times a year. It is the most expensive way to grill on this list, and a simpler pit with a grate will cook the same steak.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Most adjustable grate here
- Stainless steel, made in the USA
- Long warranty
Cons
- Heavy pit, best left in one place
- Grate diameter not published
- Needs a non-combustible base
2. Hykolity 35-inch Fire Pit with 2 Cooking Grates – Wood or Charcoal, Two Grates

The Hykolity is the most complete cooking kit for the money here. Hykolity lists it at 35 inches across and 26 inches high, with a 24-inch steel fire bowl inside a ring that sits on four legs. It comes with two round cooking grates, 18.5 and 15 inches in diameter, a log rack, a poker and a round lid that doubles as a small table when the pit is cold.
Two parts make it useful in a Mexican kitchen. The charcoal pan drops into the bowl, so you can cook carne asada over a bed of briquettes or lump charcoal instead of wood, which the listing says gives a gentler, more even fire for grilling. And the grates have handles at both ends and swivel 360 degrees, and can be raised and lowered, so you can push the steak away from a flare-up or swing the grate aside to add fuel.
Two grates mean two zones: sear on the larger one over the hottest coals and keep tortillas, cebollitas or a pot of charro beans on the smaller one. Hykolity describes the steel as heavy-gauge, rustproof and weather-resistant. It does not publish a weight, and the warranty is one year with free exchange for quality problems.
Why we like it
- Two grates, 18.5 in and 15 in (Hykolity)
- Charcoal pan included for steady grilling heat
- Grates swivel 360° and adjust in height
- Lid converts the pit into a table
Key specifications
| Model | WHP32 |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Wood or charcoal (charcoal pan included) |
| Diameter | 35 in overall; 24 in fire bowl |
| Grate size | 18.5 in and 15 in round |
| Grate adjustable | Yes: swivels 360°, raises and lowers |
| Material | Heavy-duty gauge steel |
| Weight | Not stated |
| Warranty | 1 year |
Why we recommend it
It suits a family that wants a backyard fire pit and an occasional charcoal grill in one purchase, with enough grate for steak, vegetables and tortillas at the same time.
Skip it if you want a long warranty. Hykolity describes the steel as rustproof and weather-resistant, but backs it for one year, against a lifetime limited warranty on the Breeo.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Two adjustable grates
- Burns wood or charcoal
- Lid and poker included
Cons
- Weight not published
- Short warranty
- No spark screen listed

3. Sunnydaze Northland 36-inch Rectangle Fire Pit with Grill – A Grate Shaped for Long Cuts

Most fire pit grates are round, which wastes space when you are laying out long strips of skirt steak or a row of whole green onions. The Northland is a rectangular brazier, and Sunnydaze lists the chrome cooking grate at 19.5 by 11.75 inches inside a pit that measures 36 inches wide, 27 inches deep and 25 inches high.
It comes as a full set: the grate, a mesh spark screen with a hinged door so you can reach the logs or the grate without lifting the whole screen, a poker and a weather-resistant cover. The body is steel with a black high-temperature paint, and a tubular rail runs around the brazier, which Sunnydaze says makes it easy to carry. At 27.4 pounds it is light enough to take to a campsite.
The grate does not adjust; it sits at a fixed height over the fire. You control heat the way a taquero does on a fixed grill: let the wood burn down to coals before you cook, and spread them thicker under one end and thinner under the other.
Why we like it
- Rectangular 19.5 x 11.75 in grate (Sunnydaze)
- Spark screen with a hinged access door
- Cover and poker included
- 27.4 lb with a carry rail
Key specifications
| Model | NB-NW201 |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Wood |
| Diameter | Rectangular, 36 x 27 x 25 in |
| Grate size | 19.5 x 11.75 in |
| Grate adjustable | No; removable |
| Material | Steel, high-temperature paint; chrome grate |
| Weight | 27.4 lb |
| Warranty | 1-year limited |
Why we recommend it
Choose it for a simple, light fire pit that grills well, especially if you cook long cuts, kebabs or rows of vegetables and like a spark screen you can open without taking it off.
Skip it if you want to move food up and away from the fire. The fixed grate means managing the coals, not the grate height.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Useful rectangular grate
- Complete set with cover
- Light and portable
Cons
- Grate height is fixed
- Small grate for a crowd
- Painted steel needs its cover
4. Solo Stove Yukon Grill Top and Hub – Cast Iron for an Existing Yukon

Solo Stove’s smokeless fire pits are popular, but they have no grate of their own. This set adds one to the 27-inch Yukon. The hub is a stainless steel ring that sits on the pit, and the cast iron grill top sits on the hub. The listing gives the cooking elevation as 8 inches, the diameter as 17.5 inches and the weight as 21.5 pounds. The fire pit is not included.
Cast iron is a good choice over wood. It holds heat, so it leaves dark grill marks on steak and onions, and it evens out the heat from a fire that rises and falls. Keep it seasoned like a skillet: dry it after use and wipe on a thin film of oil, or it will rust between cookouts. Our guide to the best cast iron skillet explains the same care for pans.
A note on the listing: its title describes a grill top, but its bullet points describe a griddle top. Solo Stove sells separate versions for its Ranger, Bonfire and Yukon pits, so check that the size you order matches your pit. The listing does not state a warranty.
Why we like it
- 17.5 in cast iron grill top (listing)
- Stainless hub sets the grate 8 in above the fire
- Made by Solo Stove for the Yukon
- Lifts off when you want a plain fire
Key specifications
| Model | SSYUK-27-COOKING-BUNDLE |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Wood (in a Yukon pit, not included) |
| Diameter | Fits the 27 in Yukon |
| Grate size | 17.5 in round |
| Grate adjustable | No; fixed 8 in elevation |
| Material | Cast iron grill top; stainless steel hub |
| Weight | 21.5 lb (listing) |
| Warranty | Not stated in listing |
Why we recommend it
If you already own a Yukon, this is the simplest way to cook on it, and it is made by the same company to fit.
Skip it if you do not own a Solo Stove. Buying the pit and the grill top separately costs more than most fire pits sold with a grate.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Cast iron holds heat
- Made for the Yukon
- Quick to put on and take off
Cons
- Fire pit sold separately
- Cast iron needs seasoning
- Listing text mixes grill and griddle

5. Stanbroil 24-inch Swivel Fire Pit Grill Grate – Turns Any Fire Into a Grill

A swing-arm grate is the old campfire answer to cooking over a fire pit, and it still works. You drive the spike into the ground beside the pit, slide the arm on, and the grate hangs over the fire. Stanbroil lists the stainless steel grate at 24 inches in diameter on a 33-inch ground spike. Spring handles let you slide it up or down the post, and the title says it swivels a full 360 degrees.
That swivel is the useful part. Swing the grate out over the grass to load it with steak and onions, swing it back over the coals to cook, and swing it away again if the fire flares. The set includes a hook bar for hanging a pot or kettle, so a pot of beans or a coffee kettle can sit over the fire next to the grate. Stanbroil says it assembles without tools in under ten minutes and comes apart for storage.
Because it stands on its own, it works with a ring of rocks at a campsite, a fire pit bowl without a grate, or a built-in backyard pit. It does need soft ground for the spike; on a stone patio it has nothing to stand in. Stanbroil does not state a weight or warranty on the listing.
Why we like it
- 24 in stainless steel grate (Stanbroil)
- Swivels 360° and adjusts in height
- Hook bar for a pot or kettle
- Works beside any fire with soft ground
Key specifications
| Model | G034-24-SS |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Any wood fire (no pit included) |
| Diameter | 24 in grate; 33 in ground spike |
| Grate size | 24 in round |
| Grate adjustable | Yes: swivels 360°, spring-handle height |
| Material | Stainless steel grate |
| Weight | Not stated |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you already have a fire pit or a fire ring and want a large, adjustable grate for the least money and storage space.
Skip it if your fire pit sits on pavers or concrete. The ground spike needs soil, and the grate will not stand without it.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Large swiveling grate
- Pot hook included
- Packs down small
Cons
- Needs soft ground
- Weight and warranty not stated
- No fire bowl included
6. Sunnydaze Cosmic 30-inch Fire Pit with Grill Grate – Stainless Grate, Light Bowl

The Cosmic is a round, light fire pit sold with a stainless steel cooking grate, which is less common at this level than chrome or painted steel. Sunnydaze lists the grate at 22.75 inches across, over a 24.25-inch bowl that is 9 inches deep. The 30-inch overall diameter includes an outer ring that, in Sunnydaze’s words, keeps everyone a safe distance from the flames.
A built-in wood grate holds the logs off the bottom of the bowl so air can reach them. The set includes a 23-inch spark screen, a poker that lifts the hot screen, and a cover. Star and moon cutouts in the bowl give it its name and throw light around the patio. Sunnydaze says the 0.7 mm steel bowl weighs just 16.8 pounds, stands 6 inches off the ground and has no drainage holes, so tip out rainwater and keep it covered.
Sunnydaze recommends a level, fire-safe surface such as stone, brick or gravel, and a fire-resistant mat if it goes on a wood deck. Fire safety agencies are stricter about distance, as the safety section below explains. The grate sits on the bowl; it does not adjust.
Why we like it
- 22.75 in stainless steel cooking grate (Sunnydaze)
- Built-in wood grate for airflow
- Spark screen, poker and cover included
- 16.8 lb, easy to move or store
Key specifications
| Model | NB-MS201 |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Wood |
| Diameter | 30 in overall; 24.25 in bowl, 9 in deep |
| Grate size | 22.75 in round |
| Grate adjustable | No |
| Material | 0.7 mm steel bowl; stainless steel grate |
| Weight | 16.8 lb |
| Warranty | 1-year limited |
Why we recommend it
It suits a small patio where the fire pit is mostly for evenings and the grate comes out for burgers, hot dogs or a skillet of fajita vegetables now and then.
Skip it if you want a pit built to last for many years outdoors. The thin steel and lack of drainage mean it needs to be kept dry.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Stainless steel grate
- Very light
- Full accessory set
Cons
- Thin 0.7 mm steel
- No drainage holes
- Fixed grate height
7. Bali Outdoors 32-inch Fire Pit with Grill – Swivel Grate on a Simple Bowl

Bali Outdoors makes a range of fire pits with cooking grates, and the 32-inch model is the plainest of them. The listing describes a 20-inch fire bowl inside a 32-inch frame, a grille screen that lets air reach the fire, and a grate with built-in handles that rotates 360 degrees and moves up and down.
That swivel-and-lift grate is the same idea as the Hykolity’s, on a smaller, simpler pit. A 20-inch bowl makes a modest fire, which is no drawback for cooking: you want a bed of coals, not a bonfire. Build the fire well before dinner, let it burn down, then lower the grate for steak or raise it for chicken and vegetables.
The listing gives less detail than most here. It calls the body high-quality metal without naming the steel or finish, says it assembles in under 20 minutes, and does not state the grate diameter, weight or warranty. Ask the seller before you buy if those matter to you.
Why we like it
- Grate rotates 360° and adjusts in height (listing)
- Built-in handles on the grate
- Assembles in under 20 minutes
- Poker included
Key specifications
| Model | BO32FP |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Wood |
| Diameter | 32 in overall; 20 in fire bowl |
| Grate size | Not stated |
| Grate adjustable | Yes: rotates 360°, up and down |
| Material | Metal (type not stated) |
| Weight | Not stated |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want an adjustable swivel grate on a compact, simple fire pit and do not need the Hykolity’s second grate or charcoal pan.
Skip it if you want full specifications before buying. The listing leaves out the grate size, weight and warranty.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Swiveling, adjustable grate
- Compact fire bowl
- Quick assembly
Cons
- Sparse specifications
- No cover or spark screen listed
- Warranty not stated

8. Camp Chef Lumberjack Over-the-Fire Grill – Folding Legs Over the Coals

The Lumberjack is the simplest grill on the list: a 24-by-16-inch plated steel grate on four folding legs. Camp Chef’s instructions are short: build a hot bed of campfire coals, set the grill over the fire, and start cooking. The rectangular grate is large enough for several steaks, a row of corn and a skillet of beans or rice at once.
It works over a campground fire ring, a wide fire pit bowl or a pit dug in the ground, as long as the legs can stand level around the coals. Because the grate height is set by the legs, you manage heat with the coals, raking more under the side where you want to sear. Camp Chef says the plated steel gives an even cooking surface and will hold up to years of use, and the legs fold flat for the trunk.
The listing does not give a weight, and the warranty is a limited one year. Check that your fire pit is wide enough for the legs to stand outside the fire bowl or on the ground around it before you buy.
Why we like it
- 24 x 16 in grate (Camp Chef)
- Four folding legs for stability and packing
- Plated steel cooking surface
- Works over most campfires
Key specifications
| Model | OFG24 |
|---|---|
| Fuel | Any wood fire or coals (no pit included) |
| Diameter | Rectangular, 24 x 16 in |
| Grate size | 24 x 16 in |
| Grate adjustable | No; height set by legs |
| Material | Plated steel |
| Weight | Not stated |
| Warranty | 1-year limited |
Why we recommend it
It suits campers and anyone with a large fire ring who wants a flat, stable grate for cast iron and steaks without a stake or swing arm.
Skip it if your fire pit is a narrow bowl. The legs need room to stand level around the fire.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Stable on four legs
- Folds flat
- Large rectangular grate
Cons
- No height adjustment
- Weight not stated
- Needs a wide fire area
How to choose a fire pit grill
A fire pit is a heater first and a grill second, so the details that matter for cooking are easy to miss. These five decide whether you will actually cook on it.
1. Built-in grate, brand add-on or free-standing grate
A pit sold with a grate, such as the Hykolity, Sunnydaze or Bali, is the cheapest complete setup. A brand add-on, such as Breeo’s Outpost or Solo Stove’s grill top, fits one maker’s pits exactly and usually costs more. A free-standing grate, swing-arm or on legs, works over any fire and stores small, but needs soil or a wide fire area to stand in.
2. Grate height and adjustment
Over wood, the heat changes as the fire burns. A grate you can raise, lower or swing aside lets you follow it: low for searing carne asada, high for chicken that needs time, swung out to load and unload. A fixed grate works too, but then you control heat by spreading the coals, so look for a pit wide enough to hold a hot side and a cooler side.
3. Grate size and shape
Measure the grate, not the pit. A 35-inch pit may carry an 18-inch grate. For four people, a grate around 18 inches is enough for steak and vegetables; for more, look at two grates or a 24-inch swing-arm. Rectangular grates hold long cuts and rows of cebollitas better than round ones.

4. Grate material
Stainless steel, on the Breeo, Stanbroil and Cosmic grates, resists rust and is easy to scrub. Cast iron, on the Solo Stove top, holds the most heat and leaves the darkest marks but needs oiling like a skillet. Chrome-plated and plated steel grates are cheaper and work well, but the plating can wear with hard scraping.
5. Fuel and the bowl
Every pit here burns wood. Cook over coals, not flames: wait until the logs have burned down. A charcoal pan, like the Hykolity’s, lets you grill over briquettes for steadier heat. Deep bowls and screens contain sparks; drainage holes, or a cover, keep rain from rusting the bowl.
How we picked these eight fire pit grills
We started from what a kitchen needs from a cooking fire: a grate close enough to the coals to sear, a way to move food toward and away from the heat, room for meat and vegetables at once, and parts that survive outdoors. We then looked at fire pits with grates, brand-made grill attachments and free-standing grates sold on Amazon in the United States and showing as in stock when we checked, and confirmed each specification on the maker’s page or the brand’s Amazon listing. Where a listing is thin or inconsistent, as with the Bali’s missing grate size or the Solo Stove listing’s mixed-up bullet points, we say so. We left out models showing very low stock, including Pleasant Hearth’s fire pits with cooking grids and Ash and Ember’s 38-inch swivel-grate pit, and generic listings with no identifiable maker. We have not cooked on these fire pits for this guide, and we did not rely on outside reviews for it; the picks come from the makers, the listings and our own kitchen’s view of what cooking over fire requires.
Fire pit safety before you cook
Follow the manual that comes with your fire pit, and check local rules: some cities and counties restrict open burning or ban it during dry, windy weather. On top of that, these points come from the U.S. Fire Administration’s outdoor fire safety page and the USDA Forest Service’s Smokey Bear campfire safety guide:
- Outdoors and away from the house. USFA says to use fire pits and outdoor fireplaces outdoors, at least 10 feet away from your home or anything that can burn.
- Use a screen. USFA advises a metal screen over wood-burning fires to keep sparks from floating out; when you cook with the screen off, keep an eye on sparks.
- Watch it. USFA says to watch children closely when the fire pit is in use, and the Forest Service guide says to keep young children and pets away and never leave a fire unattended.
- No flammable liquids. The Forest Service guide says not to use any type of flammable liquid to start your fire, and not to light one when it is windy.
- Put it out completely. USFA says to put out fires before you leave the backyard. The Forest Service method is drown, stir, drown again, then hold your bare hand just above the wet ashes to check for heat: “If it’s too hot to touch, it’s too hot to leave.”
- Coals and ashes. USFA advises putting cooled grill coals in a metal can with a lid.

Cooking carne asada over a fire pit
Here is how a kitchen would cook a Mexican meal over a fire pit grill.
- Burn down to coals. Light the fire well before you cook, and grill over glowing coals rather than tall flames. Push more coals to one side for a hot zone and leave the other side thinner.
- Carne asada: sear marinated skirt or flap steak low over the hot side, then rest it and slice across the grain. The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service’s safe minimum internal temperature chart lists 145°F for beef steaks with a rest of at least three minutes; check with a thermometer.
- Chicken and burgers: FSIS lists 165°F for poultry and 160°F for ground meat, so pollo asado and burgers need the cooler side, or a raised grate, to cook through without burning.
- Fajitas and beans: set a cast iron skillet on the grate for peppers and onions, or a Dutch oven of charro beans over the cooler side. Our best camp Dutch oven guide covers pots made for coals, and how to eat fajitas explains the build at the table.
- Tortillas: warm them for a few seconds a side at the edge of the grate, or on a comal set on the grate; see the best comal for tortillas.
Fire pit grill questions, answered
What is the best fire pit with a grill?
For a pit you will cook on often, the Breeo X Series 24 Grilling Bundle, because its stainless steel Outpost Grill adjusts in height and swings 360 degrees. For less money, the Hykolity 35-inch pit comes with two swiveling grates and a charcoal pan.
Is a fire pit and grill combo better than a separate grill?
It depends how often you grill. A fire pit with a grate is great for weekend cookouts and gatherings, but it takes time to burn wood down to coals and gives you less control than a charcoal grill with a lid and vents. If you grill every week, our guide to the best charcoal grill is the better starting point.
Can I add a grill to the fire pit I already own?
Yes. If your pit is a Breeo or Solo Stove, buy the maker’s own grill attachment. For any other pit, a swing-arm grate like the Stanbroil stakes into the ground beside it, and a legged grate like the Camp Chef Lumberjack stands over a wide fire.
Can I use charcoal in a wood-burning fire pit?
Some makers allow it; Hykolity includes a charcoal pan for that purpose. Check your manual first. Whatever you burn, do it outdoors only: the Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that burning charcoal gives off carbon monoxide and must never be burned inside homes, vehicles or tents.
Do I need to season a fire pit grate?
Cast iron grates, like the Solo Stove grill top, need the same care as a cast iron pan: dry after use and oil lightly. Stainless steel and plated grates only need scrubbing with a grill brush while warm.
Our final pick for cooking over fire
Buy the Breeo X Series 24 Grilling Bundle if you want a fire pit that is also a real grill, with a stainless grate you can raise, lower and swing. Choose the Hykolity 35-inch pit for the most cooking kit for the money, the Sunnydaze Northland for long cuts on a rectangular grate, the Solo Stove Grill Top if you already own a Yukon, and the Stanbroil swing-arm to cook over a fire you already have. Whatever you choose, cook over coals, keep the fire 10 feet from the house and put it out completely.
