Porcelain, Glass or Steel? How to Pick the Best Gravy Boat

Seven picks from HIC, Fiesta, Anchor Hocking, Winco and more, judged on food surface, capacity and pour. Find the best gravy boat for your table.

Gravy is the last thing to reach the table and the first thing to go cold, and the boat it travels in matters more than most people think. A good one holds enough for a second pass, pours without a drip down the side, and comes clean after a day of cooking. A poor one dribbles down the outside and onto the tablecloth.

In a restaurant we choose serving pieces for how they hold up, not how they look on a shelf. The same questions apply at home: what is the surface touching the food, how much does it hold, and will it survive the sink. For Thanksgiving, those three questions lead to a short list of the best gravy boat options, in porcelain, ceramic, glass and stainless steel.

Quick verdict: which sauce boat to buy

For most tables, buy the HIC Hotel Gravy Boat with Saucer, 24 oz: it has the most capacity here, a matching saucer, and a clear maker statement that the porcelain is lead- and cadmium-free. Want color made in the USA? Choose the Fiesta Sauceboat. Want no glaze at all? Choose the Anchor Hocking Presence in glass or the American Metalcraft in stainless steel.

Below are seven boats from six makers, each with one honest reason to skip it. Every glazed pick carries a maker lead-free statement, and every other pick is plain glass or steel.

Our picks for the best gravy boat

We start with the full-size boats for a big table, move to steel for hard use, and finish with small boats for two to four people. Capacities are as stated, and a boat poured to the brim will not travel well, so count on a little less than the number on the listing.

1. HIC Hotel Gravy Boat with Saucer, 24 oz – Big Enough for the Whole Table

Best overallHIC Kitchen Hotel Gravy Boat With Saucer

This is the gravy boat we would buy first for a family table. It holds 24 ounces, three cups, which is the most of any pick here, so one fill can get around a full Thanksgiving table before anyone has to go back to the stove. It comes with a matching saucer that catches the drip from the lip, and HIC says the saucer also works as a rest for a ladle or serving spoon.

The material is what moved it to the top. HIC describes this as fine porcelain that is lead- and cadmium-free, and that statement is right on the listing. Gravy sits in the boat through a long meal, so we want a clear answer on the glaze, and here there is one. It is plain white, which means it goes with whatever plates you already own.

HIC rates it safe in the dishwasher and the freezer, in the microwave for reheating, and in the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. That last rating is useful in a practical way: you can warm the empty boat for a few minutes while the turkey rests, and the gravy stays hot longer once you pour it in. Two independent roundups, from The Daily Meal and Real Homes, also name this boat. Neither says it was put through a test, so take those as editors’ choices, not results.

Why we like it

  • 24-ounce capacity, the largest on this page
  • Fine porcelain that HIC states is lead- and cadmium-free
  • Matching saucer catches drips and rests a ladle
  • Oven safe to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, so it can be warmed first

Why we recommend it

Anyone who hosts the big dinner and wants one boat that handles all of it. The capacity, the saucer and the clear lead statement make it the easiest all-round choice.

Skip it if you cook for two or three, because 24 ounces of gravy is more than you will want to warm up and carry to a small table.

2. Fiesta Sauceboat, 18.5 oz – Lead-Free Glaze, Made in the USA

Best made in the USAFiesta® Sauceboat/Gravy Boat – Durable Ceramic

If your table already has color on it, this is the boat to buy. Fiesta is the long-running American dinnerware line from The Homer Laughlin China Company, and this 18.5-ounce sauceboat comes in the line’s vitrified ceramic with a colored glaze. This listing is the turquoise. At just over two cups it serves a table of six or eight without feeling oversized on a weeknight.

The listing states a lead-free glaze, and Fiesta’s own FAQ is more detailed than most makers’ answers. It says the dinnerware has been “lead-free” since 1986, and that the company chooses not to say “100% lead free” because trace amounts can occur in natural raw materials. On cadmium, it says the glazes contain scant amounts that are encapsulated, are safe for food use, and average a cadmium release of less than 0.02 parts per million. We would rather read that kind of plain account than a one-word claim.

The listing says it is safe in the dishwasher, the microwave and the oven, and it carries a five-year chip warranty. Fiesta’s FAQ suggests about 350 degrees Fahrenheit for dinnerware in the oven and says not to place pieces above or directly under an open flame, so keep it off the burner and out from under the broiler. Vitrified ceramic is a dense body, which suits a piece that goes to the sink as often as this one will.

Why we like it

  • Listing states a lead-free glaze
  • Made in the USA
  • Five-year chip warranty
  • Oven, microwave and dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

Households that want a gravy boat they will use all year for sauces and dressings, and anyone already collecting Fiesta.

Skip it if you want something quiet on a formal table, or you need a saucer in the box to catch the drip.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Plain, detailed maker statement on lead and cadmium
  • Made in the USA
  • Five-year chip warranty
  • Good mid-size capacity

3. Anchor Hocking Presence Glass Gravy Boat, 16 oz – Thick Glass, No Glaze

Best glassAnchor Hocking Presence Gravy Boat

Glass settles the glaze question by having no glaze at all. This Anchor Hocking boat is thick, clear glass with a molded handle, and it holds 16 ounces, two cups, which is a comfortable size for a family meal. You can see how much gravy is left from across the table, and you can see if it has started to separate before you pour.

Anchor Hocking calls it oven proof and dishwasher safe, and the listing says it is made by the company in the USA. The listing does not give a maximum oven temperature or say anything about the microwave, so treat those as unknown. Warm it with hot tap water before filling it, which also takes the chill off the glass before hot gravy goes in. That habit works for any boat on this page.

Clear glass cuts both ways. It looks clean on a white cloth and goes with anything, but it shows drips and fat lines in a way a white boat does not. If you strain your gravy or use a fat separator first, that stops being a problem. There is no saucer, so put it on a small plate if you are protecting a good tablecloth.

Why we like it

  • Plain glass with no glaze to think about
  • Thick glass and a molded handle, per the listing
  • Oven proof and dishwasher safe, per the listing
  • Made in the USA by Anchor Hocking

Key specifications

  • No microwave statement

4. American Metalcraft Stainless Steel Gravy Boat, 10 oz – A Little More in Steel

Largest stainlessAmerican Metalcraft GB1000 10 oz Stainless Steel Gravy Boat

American Metalcraft makes tabletop pieces for restaurants, and its GB1000 is the largest stainless boat on this page at 10 ounces. Two extra ounces over an 8-ounce boat does not sound like much, but it is an extra serving at the table, and it means a family of four can make it through dinner without a refill.

The listing is short. It says the boat is made of stainless steel, is meant for both restaurant and home use, and is suited to warm gravy and salad dressings. It does not state the steel grade, the dimensions or whether it is dishwasher safe, so we list those as not stated. If the dishwasher matters to you, ask the seller before you buy.

What you get is a clean, classic shape with no glaze on it. It is a sensible pick if you want the largest steel boat from an established foodservice name. Steel boats from sellers we could not identify were easy to find; we kept to makers who sell to restaurants, because that is a name you can look up and a line you can go back to.

Why we like it

  • 10 ounces, the largest stainless pick here
  • Sold for both restaurant and home use
  • No glaze on the food surface
  • Clean, classic look, per the listing

Key specifications

Model GB1000
Material Stainless steel, grade not stated
Capacity 10 oz
Dimensions Not stated
Saucer or base None
Dishwasher Not stated
Oven and microwave Oven not stated; no microwave (metal)

Why we recommend it

Anyone who has settled on steel and wants a bit more room than the 8-ounce boats allow.

Skip it if you want every detail spelled out before you buy, because this listing leaves out the grade, the size and the care.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Largest of the steel picks
  • Established foodservice maker
  • Will not chip

Cons

  • Steel grade is not stated
  • Dishwasher use is not stated
  • Not stated as insulated

5. Winco Stainless Steel Gravy Boat, 8 oz – One Style, Three Sizes

Best range of sizesWinco 8 oz Stainless Steel Gravy Boat

Winco is a staple of restaurant supply shelves, and this boat earns its place for the range around it. Amazon carries Winco’s stainless gravy boats in 3, 5 and 8 ounces, so you can pair a full-size boat with small ones for individual place settings, jus for a roast or melted butter for crab.

This is the 8-ounce model, the GBS-8. The listing calls out a corrosion-resistant stainless steel body, an ergonomic handle for controlled pouring, and a polished finish that it says simplifies cleaning. Like most restaurant listings, it stays brief: no steel grade, no dimensions and no word on the dishwasher.

It does the same job as the American Metalcraft with 2 ounces less room, and neither listing states a steel grade, so the choice comes down to size. Choose the American Metalcraft if you want one slightly bigger boat. Choose this if you plan to buy more than one size. As with the other steel boats, nothing here says double-wall, so warm it first and fill it right before you pour.

Why we like it

  • Sold in 3, 5 and 8 ounce sizes
  • Polished finish, per the listing
  • Ergonomic handle for a controlled pour
  • No glaze on the food surface

Key specifications

Model GBS-8
Material Stainless steel, grade not stated
Capacity 8 oz
Dimensions Not stated
Saucer or base None
Dishwasher Not stated
Oven and microwave Oven not stated; no microwave (metal)
Made in Not stated

Why we recommend it

Hosts who like a small boat at each end of the table, or a matched set of sizes for sauces.

Skip it if you only want one boat and the American Metalcraft’s extra 2 ounces would help, or if you need a stated steel grade.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Comes in three sizes
  • Established restaurant supplier
  • Will not chip

Cons

  • Steel grade is not stated
  • Dishwasher use is not stated
  • Small for a full table

6. Fox Run Glass Gravy Boat, 9 oz – A Footed Glass Boat for Small Meals

Best small glassFox Run Glass Gravy Boat

Fox Run makes a wide run of kitchen tools, and this is a smaller take on the glass boat. It holds 9 ounces in an oval body with a raised lip, and it stands on a footed base that Fox Run says helps prevent knocks and spills. The handle keeps your hand away from the heat.

It measures 3.5 by 7.75 by 4.1 inches, so it fits between plates on a narrow table where the 16-ounce Anchor Hocking would crowd things. Fox Run says it can be washed by hand or in the dishwasher. The listing also suggests it for syrups, hot fudge, cheese sauce and salad dressing, which is about right; a small glass boat earns its cupboard space the rest of the year as a syrup jug at breakfast.

The listing says nothing about the oven or the microwave, and it does not state the type of glass or where it is made, so treat it as a serving piece only. Heat your gravy in a pan and warm the glass with hot tap water before you fill it. Glass has no glaze, which is why it passes our material rule without needing a maker statement.

Why we like it

  • Footed base helps prevent knocks and spills, per Fox Run
  • Raised lip for a smooth pour
  • Glass with no glaze
  • Dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

Couples and small households who want a glass boat that does not take over the table.

Skip it if you want to warm the boat in the oven, since the listing gives no oven rating.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Compact size
  • Footed for stability
  • Glaze-free
  • Useful for syrup and dressing too

Cons

  • No oven or microwave statement
  • Only 9 ounces
  • Glass type is not stated

7. HIC Pedestal Gravy Boat, 8 oz – A Classic Shape in a Small Size

Best small porcelainHIC Kitchen Gravy Boat

This is the classic gravy boat shape, with a pedestal foot, in a size for smaller dinners. It holds 8 ounces, and HIC says the pedestal base gives it extra stability at the table, with a pour spout and an easy-grip handle. It measures 8.25 by 3.75 by 3.75 inches.

It shares the things we like about our top pick. HIC describes it as fine porcelain that is lead- and cadmium-free, and rates it safe in the dishwasher, microwave and freezer and in the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. So you can warm it in the oven, or reheat leftover gravy in it the next day, which the small glass and steel boats here cannot promise.

We list it alongside the 24-ounce HIC because they answer different needs. The pedestal is built into the boat, so there is no separate saucer here, and a drip from the lip will land on the foot or the cloth. HIC suggests it for individual place settings and small family dinners, and that is the right way to think about it.

Why we like it

  • Fine porcelain that HIC states is lead- and cadmium-free
  • Pedestal base for stability at the table
  • Oven safe to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and microwave safe
  • Compact 8-ounce size

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

Small households that want real porcelain and a traditional look, and hosts who want a second boat for a different sauce.

Skip it if you need to serve a full holiday table, because you will be back at the stove before everyone is served.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Clear maker statement on lead and cadmium
  • Can be warmed in the oven or microwave
  • Stable pedestal base

Cons

  • Only 8 ounces
  • No separate saucer
  • Second pick from the same maker

How to choose a gravy boat

Start with the surface that touches the food

This is the first thing we check. Gravy sits in the boat, hot and a little salty, for as long as dinner lasts. Stainless steel and glass have no glaze, so there is nothing to ask about. Glazed porcelain, ceramic and stoneware are different: we want the maker to say in plain words that the glaze is lead-free. HIC and Fiesta both do. Some well-known makers give a more general compliance statement, or none we could find, and we left those boats out of this list. One glass boat we looked at turned out to be 24 percent lead crystal, and that came out too. Read the listing, and be wary of antique or hand-me-down pieces with no maker information.

Match capacity to the table

A rough kitchen guide is about a quarter cup, 2 ounces, per person, and more if your family likes gravy on everything. That makes 8 ounces right for three or four, 16 to 18 ounces right for eight, and 24 ounces the safe choice for a holiday crowd. For a long table, two small boats often beat one big one, because nobody has to pass it the full length.

Look at the spout and the handle

A pouring lip should be narrow enough to steer and deep enough to stop the last drop running down the outside. A handle needs room for your fingers, because a full boat is carried one-handed over other people’s plates. Most listings say little about this, so a saucer or footed base is simple insurance against a drip reaching the cloth.

Decide how you will keep it hot

Porcelain and heavy glass hold warmth better once they are warmed. Pour hot water in, let it sit for a minute, tip it out and dry it, then fill. The two HIC boats can also go in the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit while the turkey rests. Keep a small pan of gravy on low on the stove so you can top up with hot gravy, instead of reheating the boat.

Think about the rest of the year

A boat you use only once a year should be easy to store and hard to break. If you will use it for pancake syrup, salad dressing or cheese sauce, a dishwasher-safe piece that looks fine on a weekday table is worth more than a holiday pattern. Choose a piece that will earn a place in the cupboard.

White bowls on a simply set table.

How we chose these seven gravy boats

We looked at the boats on sale on Amazon, kept those in stock from makers we could identify, and read each listing and the makers’ own statements. We have not used these products ourselves. Food-contact materials came first: a glazed boat needed a maker’s lead-free statement, or it stayed off the page. That ruled out several familiar names.

We also read gravy boat roundups from The Daily Meal, Taste of Home and Real Homes. They helped frame what buyers care about, and two of them name the HIC Hotel, but none of them claims a head-to-head test. The other six picks rest on the listing and the maker’s details, and we say so here so you can weigh that. We also searched CPSC’s recall database for each maker and found no recall naming these boats.

You will see no lidded boats here. Most of the double-wall steel boats with hinged lids come from small brands where we could not confirm who makes them or what goes into them, and for something that holds hot food we would rather stop at seven solid picks.

Gravy boat questions, answered

What size gravy boat do I need for Thanksgiving?

Plan on about 2 ounces per person, more for gravy lovers. A table of eight needs at least 16 ounces, and the 24-ounce HIC Hotel covers a bigger crowd with some left for seconds.

Is a stainless steel gravy boat better than ceramic?

Stainless will not chip and has no glaze, which suits busy kitchens. Porcelain and ceramic can be warmed in the oven or microwave when the maker allows it, and they look more at home on a dressed table. Pick steel for durability and porcelain for a holiday meal.

Is a gravy boat with a lid worth it?

A lid helps hold heat and slows the skin that forms on gravy. But most lidded boats we saw are double-wall steel from small brands we could not check, so none made this list. Warming the boat first and topping up from a pan on the stove does much of the same job.

Can you put a gravy boat in the oven or microwave?

Only if the maker says so. HIC rates its porcelain boats for the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and the microwave. Fiesta says its dinnerware is oven and microwave safe and suggests about 350 degrees. Anchor Hocking calls the Presence oven proof without giving a temperature. Metal boats never go in the microwave.

How do you keep gravy warm at the table?

Warm the boat with hot water, fill it just before you sit down, and hold the rest in a covered pan on the lowest heat. Stir and top up as needed, since gravy thickens as it cools.

The gravy boat we would set out this year

Related guide: Gravy boat alternative.

For a holiday table, the HIC Hotel is the one to buy: three cups of capacity, a saucer that protects the cloth, and a clear statement on what the porcelain is made of. Add a small steel boat for the far end of the table if you have the room. Then set the rest of the table with our serving bowls and serving platters, and give the bird a good home with our roasting pans for turkey. And if you would rather someone else did the cooking tonight, see the menu or call to order.
