Porcelain, Melamine or Wood? The Best Serving Platters

The best serving platters for family dinners and parties: porcelain, glass, melamine, teak and slate, with sizes, oven use and makers' glaze statements.

A large gold-rimmed platter piled with fruit, cheese, cured meats and vegetables around a white bowl of dip
A loaded grazing platter built around a bowl of dip.

A platter is where a party meal actually lands. The carne asada comes off the grill and onto it, the elote gets lined up across it, the rice and beans go in bowls beside it, and the whole table forms around that one big dish. In a restaurant the rule is simple: the platter has to be big enough for the food, sturdy enough to carry full, and easy enough to wash that nobody dreads it at the end of the night.

That leaves a lot of choice. Porcelain looks clean and goes in the oven to warm. Melamine survives being dropped at a backyard party. Wood and slate make a good board for cheese, bread or a grazing spread. This guide names nine serving platters worth buying across those materials, from Villeroy & Boch, HIC Kitchen, Sweese, Corelle, Carlisle, Teakhaus, Boska and Amazon Basics, and explains what each one is good for.

Quick verdict: which serving platter to buy

For most homes, the best serving platter is the Villeroy & Boch For Me Oval Platter, 16 inch: it is plain white porcelain made in Germany with a wide rim, the listing says it is dishwasher-, microwave- and oven-safe, and Villeroy & Boch states that no lead or cadmium is added to its glazes. For a whole brisket or a full tray of fajita meat, step up to the HIC Kitchen Fine Porcelain Oversized Platter at 17.5 inches. For a party where platters get dropped, the Carlisle Kingline melamine oval platter is the restaurant answer.

Our picks for the best serving platters

These nine cover the jobs a platter really does: a good-looking everyday oval, an oversized one for a big roast, a matching set for a buffet line, a light glass platter, unbreakable melamine for outdoors, and wood and slate boards for a grazing spread. For each glazed ceramic platter we only included makers that state the piece or its glaze is lead-free, and we say exactly what each one claims.

1. Villeroy & Boch For Me Oval Platter, 16 in – Oven-to-Table German Porcelain

Best overallVilleroy & Boch For Me Oval Platter

This is the kind of platter a good restaurant buys by the dozen: plain white, generous, and shaped for work. The For Me oval is 16 inches long and made of Villeroy & Boch’s premium porcelain in Germany. It has a wide rim, which the listing says is there for drip-free serving, and that matters when the platter holds sliced carne asada with its juices or a stack of grilled corn brushed with butter and crema.

Villeroy & Boch describes it as ideal for catering: it can be carried with one hand, the platters stack inside each other, and the edges are made to be shock- and impact-resistant. The listing says it is dishwasher-safe and suitable for the microwave and for the oven up to 392°F, so you can warm it in a low oven before plating hot food, a simple trick that keeps a main course warm a little longer at the table.

On glaze, Villeroy & Boch’s own dining FAQ states that no lead, cadmium or other heavy metals are added to its glazes and porcelain bodies, and that heavy metals may be present only in decorative paints or images. This platter is undecorated white.

Why we like it

  • 16-inch oval with a wide, drip-catching rim
  • Dishwasher-, microwave- and oven-safe to 392°F, per the listing
  • Stackable, one-hand carry, impact-resistant edges
  • Maker states no lead or cadmium is added to its glazes

Key specifications

Platter For Me Oval Platter, White (1041532940)
Material Premium porcelain, made in Germany
Size 16 in long
Shape Oval, wide rim
Oven/microwave-safe (stated) Oven to 392°F; microwave-safe
Dishwasher-safe Yes
Glaze statement (maker) No lead, cadmium or other heavy metals added to glazes (Villeroy & Boch FAQ)

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who wants one platter that works for a weeknight roast chicken, a Sunday spread of grilled meat and a holiday ham, and that will still look right years from now.

Skip it if you need something unbreakable for the patio; it is porcelain, so a hard drop on concrete can still break it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Clear maker statement on glazes
  • Oven-safe for warming
  • Stacks for storage

Cons

  • Costs more than the white porcelain sets here
  • Width not given on the listing
  • Plain look, by design

2. HIC Kitchen Fine Porcelain Oversized Platter – Room for the Whole Roast

Best extra-largeHIC Kitchen Turkey Embossed Serving Platter

Most “large” platters top out around 16 inches, which is fine for a family dinner and too small for party quantities. HIC Kitchen’s oversized porcelain platter measures 17.5 by 13.125 inches and about an inch deep, and HIC describes it as having generous depth and ample capacity for large gatherings. That is enough room for a whole roast turkey, a brisket, or several pounds of sliced arrachera with grilled onions and peppers around the edge.

HIC sells it as a turkey platter, and it has an embossed turkey design in the well and scalloped edges, so it reads as a holiday piece. Once it is covered with food, though, the pattern mostly disappears, and the size is what you are paying for. HIC suggests it for roast beef, glazed ham, roast chicken and roasted vegetables as well as turkey.

The listing states the porcelain is lead- and cadmium-free and that the platter is microwave- and oven-safe for warming. It does not mention the dishwasher, so we would wash it by hand, which is easier anyway with a platter this size.

Why we like it

  • 17.5 x 13.125 inches, larger than most platters here
  • Lead- and cadmium-free, per HIC
  • Microwave- and oven-safe for warming
  • About an inch deep, so juices stay on the platter

Key specifications

Platter Turkey Embossed Serving Platter, Oversized (NT113)
Material Fine porcelain
Size 17.5 x 13.125 x 1 in
Shape Oval, scalloped edge, embossed well
Oven/microwave-safe (stated) Oven- and microwave-safe
Dishwasher-safe Not stated
Glaze statement (maker) Lead and cadmium free (HIC listing)

Why we recommend it

It suits the host who cooks for a crowd a few times a year, from Thanksgiving to a graduation carne asada, and needs one platter that can take all of it.

Skip it if you want a plain platter for everyday use; the embossed turkey is clearly a holiday design.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Very large serving surface
  • Clear lead and cadmium statement
  • Can go in the oven to warm

Cons

  • Dishwasher use not stated
  • Holiday pattern
  • Needs a big cabinet or shelf

3. Sweese Rectangular Porcelain Platters, Two Sets of 4 – A Matching Buffet Line

Best for a buffet lineSweese White Serving Platters

A buffet looks organized when the serving pieces match, and rectangles line up better than ovals on a long folding table. This listing is two sets of four of Sweese’s white porcelain platters, eight in all, each 15.5 by 7.5 inches, with a lip all around the edge that the listing says keeps food from sliding off.

That shape is just right for the long, narrow foods of a Mexican party: a row of elote, a line of flautas, sliced grilled chicken, or a platter each of pico de gallo, shredded lettuce and lime wedges at the end of a taco bar. Eight the same size also means the table reads as one setup rather than a collection of whatever was in the cabinet.

Sweese describes the platters as premium lead-free porcelain, chip-resistant, and safe for the dishwasher, microwave and freezer. The listing does not say they can go in the oven, so keep them for serving rather than warming.

Why we like it

  • Eight matching platters in two sets
  • Rectangles line up neatly on a buffet
  • Lead-free porcelain, per Sweese
  • Dishwasher-, microwave- and freezer-safe

Key specifications

Platter White Serving Platters, Large Rectangular, Set of 4, Pack of 2 (703)

Size 15.5 x 7.5 in each
Shape Rectangle with raised lip
Oven/microwave-safe (stated) Microwave-safe; oven not stated
Dishwasher-safe Yes
Glaze statement (maker) Lead-free porcelain (Sweese listing)

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who hosts a buffet or taco bar and wants every side dish on a matching platter.

Skip it if you need one big platter for a main course; at 7.5 inches wide, these are for sides and finger food.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Eight matching pieces
  • Good shape for long foods
  • Easy care

Cons

  • Narrow for a main course
  • Oven use not stated
  • Storage space for eight

4. Carlisle Kingline Melamine Oval Platter – Restaurant-Tough for Patios

Best melamineCarlisle FoodService Products Kingline Plastic Oval Platter Oval Tray for Home and Restaurant

Carlisle makes equipment for restaurants and cafeterias, and the Kingline is the kind of oval platter you see under a plate of enchiladas at a busy diner. It is heavy-duty melamine, which Carlisle describes as sturdy and break-resistant, with reinforced stress points for the knocks of a busy kitchen. It is also NSF listed, meaning it has been certified to a foodservice sanitation standard.

At 12 by 9 inches it is a single-portion or small-sharing platter rather than a centerpiece, which is exactly why restaurants use it: a combination plate, a few tacos with rice and beans, or a pile of nachos for two. At home it is the platter to carry out to the backyard, give to children, or stack up for a party where things will get dropped. Carlisle says it resists oil and staining and that the material does not draw heat away from food.

The trade-off is heat. Carlisle states the Kingline platters are dishwasher-safe but not recommended for the oven or microwave, so serve hot food on them, but do not warm them.

Why we like it

  • Break-resistant melamine with reinforced stress points
  • NSF listed for foodservice
  • Resists oil and stains, per Carlisle
  • Dishwasher-safe

Key specifications

Platter Kingline Oval Platter, White (KL12702)
Material Melamine
Size 12 x 9 in
Shape Oval
Oven/microwave-safe (stated) No; not recommended for oven or microwave
Dishwasher-safe Yes
Glaze statement (maker) Not applicable (unglazed melamine); NSF listed

Why we recommend it

It suits outdoor parties, families with small children, and anyone who wants restaurant-style plates for tacos and combination platters.

Skip it if you want to warm the platter or reheat food on it; melamine stays out of the oven and microwave.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Hard to break
  • Foodservice certified
  • Stain-resistant

Cons

  • No oven or microwave
  • Small for a centerpiece
  • Looks institutional on a dressed table

5. Amazon Basics Porcelain Serving Platters, 3-Piece – Three Sizes for Little Money

Budget pickAmazon Basics 3-Piece Porcelain Serving Platters

Three plain white porcelain platters in graduated sizes cover most of what a small party needs: one for the quesadilla wedges, one for chips and a bowl of salsa, one for dessert. Amazon Basics sells this set, previously under its AmazonCommercial label, and describes it as intended for food service, restaurants and catering as well as home use.

The sizes are 12.75 by 6.97 inches, 11 by 5.9 inches and 10 by 5.2 inches, so they are long and fairly narrow, good for a row of appetizers rather than a heap of food. They stack for storage. The listing describes the construction as heavy-duty and reinforced, and the porcelain as lead-free.

The listing says the platters are oven-, microwave- and freezer-safe, but it recommends hand-washing, which is the one point to know before you buy if you want everything to go in the dishwasher after a party.

Why we like it

  • Three sizes in one set
  • Lead-free porcelain, per the listing
  • Oven-, microwave- and freezer-safe
  • Stackable

Key specifications

  • Oven-safe
  • Stacks neatly

6. Corelle Winter Frost White Serving Platter, 3-Pack – Light Glass That Stacks Flat

Best lightweightCorelle 3128 Vitrelle Glass Winter Frost White Serving Platter

Corelle is not ceramic at all. It is Vitrelle, a glass made in layers, and the result is a platter that is much thinner and lighter than porcelain. That makes a real difference when you are carrying a loaded platter from the grill to the table, or when an older relative is passing it around. This pack has three 12-1/4-inch (32 cm) round platters in Corelle’s plain Winter Frost White.

Corelle describes the glass as chip-, break-, stain- and scratch-resistant, and says the platters are microwave-, dishwasher- and oven-safe. Because they are thin, they stack in a fraction of the space of stoneware, which is useful if you keep extra platters only for parties.

At 12-1/4 inches round, each one holds a good stack of tortillas wrapped in a towel, a plate of tamales or a fruit platter. They are not large enough for a whole roast. Since this is glass rather than glazed ceramic, there is no glaze to ask about; the plain white pattern has no decoration.

Why we like it

  • Thin and light to carry
  • Chip-, break-, stain- and scratch-resistant, per Corelle
  • Microwave-, dishwasher- and oven-safe
  • Three platters that stack flat

Key specifications

Platter Winter Frost White Serving Platter, Pack of 3 (3128)
Material Vitrelle glass
Size 12-1/4 in (32 cm) round
Shape Round
Oven/microwave-safe (stated) Oven- and microwave-safe
Dishwasher-safe Yes
Glaze statement (maker) Not applicable (glass, undecorated white)

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who already owns Corelle dinnerware, or who wants platters that are easy to lift, wash and store.

Skip it if you need a big oval for meat; these are mid-sized rounds.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Light
  • Saves cabinet space
  • Goes everywhere: oven, microwave, dishwasher

Cons

  • Round and mid-sized only
  • Flat, with little rim for juices
  • Plain look

7. Teakhaus Teak Serving Board Set of 3 – Wood Boards for a Grazing Table

Best woodTeakhaus Teakwood Serving Board Set of 3 for Charcuterie & Entertaining

A wood board is the right platter for food that is cut and shared at the table: a wheel of queso fresco with fruit, a loaf of bolillos, or a rested flank steak you slice in front of everyone. Teakhaus makes some of the best-known teak cutting boards, and this set gives you three serving shapes: a round board, a paddle with a handle, and a rectangular cutting and serving board.

The boards are edge-grain teak and reversible. Teakhaus says they have no plastic parts, coatings or finishes, describes teak as naturally food-safe, and says the wood is FSC certified, meaning it comes from forests managed to the Forest Stewardship Council’s standards. The paddle and handles give you something to grip when carrying a board full of food.

Wood needs a little care. Teakhaus says to hand wash with regular dish soap, not in the dishwasher, and to rub in a few drops of oil from time to time. Wood is also not for hot, saucy food that will soak in; keep it for sliced meat, bread, cheese and fruit.

Why we like it

  • Three shapes: round, paddle and rectangle
  • Edge-grain teak, reversible and knife-friendly
  • No coatings or finishes, per Teakhaus
  • FSC-certified wood

Key specifications

Platter Teakwood Serving Board Set of 3
Material Edge-grain teak, FSC certified

Why we recommend it

Skip it if everything you own has to go in the dishwasher.

Pros and cons

  • Three useful shapes
  • Doubles as cutting boards
  • Unfinished teak, no coatings

Cons

  • Hand wash and oil
  • Not for saucy dishes
  • Individual board sizes not listed

8. Boska Slate Serving Platter, Large – Dark Slate for Cheese and Tapas

Best slateBOSKA Slate Serving Platter - Large Best for Cheese

Slate is a strong background for food. White cheese, red chiles, green herbs and pink pickled onions all stand out against the dark stone, which is why you see slate boards in so many tapas and wine bars. Boska, a Dutch company that specializes in cheese tools, makes this large slate platter at about 13 by 9 inches, a quarter of an inch thick, with non-slip feet underneath.

You can write on the slate with chalk to label each cheese or salsa, which is handy on a party table where guests ask what is spicy. Boska lists the board as dishwasher-safe, which is unusual for slate, and it doubles as a cutting surface for cheese.

Keep in mind that slate is stone: it is heavy for its size, it can chip if dropped, and it is flat with no rim, so it suits dry foods like cheese, cured meats, crackers and fruit rather than anything juicy.

Why we like it

  • Natural slate, a dark backdrop for colorful food
  • Write on it with chalk
  • Non-slip feet
  • Dishwasher-safe, per Boska

Key specifications

Platter Slate Serving Platter, Large (359001)
Material Natural slate
Size 12.99 x 9.05 x 0.31 in
Shape Rectangle, flat, on feet
Oven/microwave-safe (stated) Not stated
Dishwasher-safe Yes
Glaze statement (maker) Not applicable (unglazed stone)

Why we recommend it

It suits a cheese course, a board of appetizers before dinner, or anyone who likes to label dishes on the table.

Skip it if you need a platter for hot, saucy food; slate is flat and has no rim.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Striking presentation
  • Chalk labeling
  • Dishwasher-safe

Cons

  • No rim
  • Heavy and can chip
  • Oven use not stated

9. Villeroy & Boch New Wave Serving Dish, 19.25 in – A Long Platter for Show

Best long platterVilleroy & Boch New Wave Serving Dish

Some food is long: a whole grilled fish, a row of chiles rellenos, a side of salmon, a line of grilled corn. The New Wave serving dish is a 19.25-inch rectangle of Villeroy & Boch premium porcelain with a slightly raised rim and the brand’s curved New Wave shape, which gives a buffet a little drama without any pattern.

Villeroy & Boch lists it at 49 by 3 cm and 2.6 kg, so it is a substantial piece. The listing says it has shock- and impact-resistant edges and is dishwasher- and microwave-safe, and it is made in Germany. It does not mention oven use, so use it for serving rather than warming.

The same Villeroy & Boch glaze statement applies here: the company says no lead, cadmium or other heavy metals are added to its glazes and porcelain bodies.

Why we like it

  • 19.25 inches long, the longest platter here
  • Raised rim for clean serving
  • Dishwasher- and microwave-safe
  • Maker states no lead or cadmium is added to its glazes

Key specifications

Platter New Wave Serving Dish, White (1-2525-2281)

Shape Curved rectangle, raised rim
Oven/microwave-safe (stated) Microwave-safe; oven not stated
Dishwasher-safe Yes
Glaze statement (maker) No lead, cadmium or other heavy metals added to glazes (Villeroy & Boch FAQ)

Why we recommend it

It suits a host who likes a dramatic centerpiece for long foods and already has a rack or shelf deep enough to store it.

Skip it if storage is tight; at more than 19 inches it will not fit many cabinets.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Very long serving surface
  • Distinctive shape
  • Clear glaze statement

Cons

  • Heavy at 2.6 kg
  • Oven use not stated
  • Hard to store

How to choose a serving platter

Size it to the food, then add a margin. A platter that is full to the edge looks generous for a minute and then spills. A 14- to 16-inch oval holds a family-sized main course; a party quantity of grilled meat, or a whole turkey, needs 17 inches or more. Long, narrow platters suit food you line up, like elote, flautas or sliced chicken. Measure the shelf or cabinet before buying anything over 16 inches.

Choose a rim if the food is juicy. Carne asada, fajita meat and anything sauced will release liquid as it sits. A platter with a raised rim or a slight well keeps that juice on the platter and off the tablecloth. Flat boards and slate are for dry food.

Decide whether it needs to go in the oven. A porcelain platter warmed in a low oven keeps hot food hot a little longer at the table. Check the maker’s statement: Villeroy & Boch’s For Me, HIC, Amazon Basics and Corelle all say oven-safe; melamine and wood are not.

Match the material to the setting. Porcelain and glass for the dining room, melamine for the patio and for children, wood and slate for cheese, bread and boards.

Read the glaze statement on glazed ceramics. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration sets action levels for how much lead may leach from ceramic tableware, but makers differ in what they tell you. We only recommend glazed ceramic platters from makers that state the platter or its glaze is lead-free, and we quote what each says. Older, handmade or brightly decorated ceramics are a different matter; if you are unsure about a piece, use it for decoration.

Setting out platters for a Mexican party

For a carne asada or a family party, think of the table as a short buffet line. Start with plates, then the main platter of meat, then tortillas in a tortilla warmer, then the sides on matching platters, and finish with salsas and toppings. Our taco bar supplies guide walks through that layout piece by piece, and a chip and dip bowl keeps salsa and guacamole from sliding around a platter.

For corn, a long rectangular platter fits more cobs; our explainer on elote versus esquites covers the two ways to serve it. For grilled meat, rest it on a board, slice it, and move it to a rimmed platter so the juices stay with the meat; a large wood cutting board can do both jobs. Set hot platters on a trivet to protect the table, and if the food has to stay hot for a long party, keep the main dish on a food warming mat or in a chafing dish and refill the platter from it. Finish the table with cloth napkins that can take a little salsa.

How much food to put out depends on the crowd; our guide to Mexican food for a group has portion rules of thumb.

How we picked these nine serving platters

We looked at porcelain, stoneware, glass, melamine, wood and slate platters from Villeroy & Boch, Le Creuset, Lenox, Mikasa, Pfaltzgraff, Noritake, Emile Henry, SANGO, Gibson Elite, HIC Kitchen, Sweese, DOWAN, Corelle, Carlisle, Teakhaus, Boska and others, and kept only those showing as in stock on Amazon when we checked. Specifications come from the Amazon listings; glaze statements come from the listings or, for Villeroy & Boch, the company’s own dining FAQ.

We set one rule for glazed ceramics: the maker had to state that the platter or its glaze is lead-free. Several well-known stoneware platters, including Le Creuset, Lenox, Mikasa, Pfaltzgraff and SANGO, are not here because we could not find that statement from the maker for the platters we checked. That is not a finding that they are unsafe, only that we could not quote the maker. Emile Henry and Noritake platters showed limited stock. We also skipped listings with no identifiable maker or with photos that looked like computer renders.

We did not read a Wirecutter, America’s Test Kitchen or Serious Eats review of serving platters for this guide, and we have not used these platters ourselves; this is a guide to what the makers state and what a working restaurant looks for in a platter.

Serving platter questions, answered

What size serving platter do I need?

For a family main course, 14 to 16 inches. For party quantities of grilled meat or a turkey, 17 inches or more, like the HIC at 17.5 inches. For sides and appetizers, 10- to 15-inch platters, ideally a matching set.

What is the best material for a serving platter?

Porcelain for most homes: it is non-porous, looks clean, and many porcelain platters can be warmed in the oven. Melamine is better outdoors and with children because it is hard to break. Wood and slate are best for cheese, bread and boards.

Can I put a serving platter in the oven?

Only if the maker says so. Villeroy & Boch’s For Me (to 392°F), HIC, Amazon Basics and Corelle state oven-safe. Carlisle says its melamine is not for the oven or microwave, and wood and slate should stay out of the oven.

Are white serving platters a good choice?

Yes. White shows off the color of food, from red salsa to green cilantro, matches any dinnerware, and a matching set of white platters makes a buffet look planned.

Did Wirecutter review serving platters?

We did not read a Wirecutter review for this guide, so we cannot say what it recommends. Our picks are based on maker specifications and stated materials.
