Every taco cookout has the same quiet problem: where does the marinated meat stay cold until the grill is ready, and where do the drinks go? For a lot of families, the answer has been an Igloo. The brand sells so many lines, though, that a search turns into a wall of look-alike boxes.
This page is for people who already want an Igloo and need to know which one. We’ll separate the lines that actually differ, tell you what independent ice trials found, and say where Igloo falls short and whose cooler to look at instead.
Julia’s earns a commission on purchases made through links on this page, at no cost to you. We have not used these coolers ourselves. Recommendations rest on Igloo’s listing details and on the published reviews we read and name below.
Quick verdict: which Igloo cooler to buy
Get the BMX 25 Qt for most cookouts: it has the most independent evidence behind it, with ice results from The Cooler Zone and Coolers On Sale. For a crowd, the Trailmate Journey 70 rolls over rough ground, and one fill-to-capacity trial got 8 days from a Trailmate 70. For one person’s lunch and drinks, the Playmate Elite 16 is the simple choice. If you need a tight seal, look past Igloo at the YETI Tundra 45 or the RTIC 52.

Our picks for the best Igloo cooler
1. Igloo BMX 25 Qt Cooler – Tough Small Chest for Weekend Cookouts

The BMX is the Igloo line with the most independent evidence behind it that we could read, and the 25-quart is a sensible size for a home cook. It holds 37 cans by Igloo’s count, or a tray of marinated carne, a tub of salsa and a few drinks. The body is blow-molded, the walls have extra-thick foam, and it closes with rubberized T-latches.
Coolers On Sale filled one to capacity with ice for a timed trial in the sun, and the 25 held ice for 6.5 days, with a 52-quart BMX reaching 7. Treat that as a best case. The site itself says many people won’t see those numbers. The Cooler Zone ran its BMX coolers about half full of ice in cooler weather, opening them now and then, and got 48 to 72 hours from the 25. It liked the build, too, and said it should last many years of typical use.
Owners of the 52-quart have complained that there’s no factory gasket on the lid, so water can leak if it tips, and one reported hinge screws pulling out. Those are individual reports, but pack it upright. If you want more room, the 52-quart is in our coolers guide.
Why we like it
- Ice results from two independent reviewers
- Stainless-reinforced grab handle, per the listing
- Rubberized T-latches, with no complaints from The Cooler Zone
Key specifications
| Model | 00050435 |
|---|---|
| Type | Hard chest |
| Capacity | 25 qt |
| Cans, per Igloo | 37 |
| Insulation | Extra-thick foam walls and lid |
| Carry | Triple-point grab handle |
| Lid or latch | Rubberized T-latches |
| Made in | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits a home cook carrying food to a park or a tailgate, who wants a sturdier chest without moving up to a much heavier one.
Skip it if you need a watertight seal. Owners report the BMX can leak when tipped, so keep it level.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Sturdy build, per The Cooler Zone
- Good ice life in two independent trials
- A size one person can manage
Cons
- No factory lid gasket, per owner reports
- No wheels
- Small for a big party
2. Igloo Trailmate Journey 70 Qt Roller Cooler – Big Wheels for Rough Ground

This is the one to pull over grass and sand. It holds 112 cans, by Igloo’s count, and rolls on 10-inch never-flat wheels with a steel handle that locks and telescopes. A removable butler tray sits on the handle for serving, and it stores under the lid.
Coolers On Sale filled a Trailmate 70 to capacity and got 8 days of ice against an advertised 4, with the lid at 100°F or higher each day. It called it the best rolling cooler for the money it has tried. Tailgating Challenge, which received a free sample of a size it doesn’t name, kept some ice for up to four days in 90-degree heat with the lid opened often, and it warned that the lid doesn’t lock, so a tip spills everything.
We can’t confirm those reviewers had this exact Journey version, so read their results as a guide to the Trailmate line rather than a promise about this listing.
Why we like it
- 10-inch wheels, per the listing
- Butler tray and handle system
- Strong ice result from Coolers On Sale, filled to capacity
Key specifications
| Model | 00034927 |
|---|---|
| Type | Hard roller |
| Capacity | 70 qt |
| Cans, per Igloo | 112 |
| Insulation | THERMECOOL foam |
| Carry | 10-inch wheels, steel Glide handle |
| Lid or latch | Lid may not lock, per one reviewer |
| Made in | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits someone feeding a crowd away from the car, at a park or a beach.
Skip it if you carry your cooler up stairs. It’s a large box to lift when it’s full.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Rolls over rough ground
- Serving tray on the handle
- Room for a large group
Cons
- Lid can spill if tipped, per Tailgating Challenge
- Takes up a lot of car space
- Exact version not confirmed in reviews
3. Igloo Trailmate 25 Qt Cooler – Thick Walls, Made in the USA

This is close in size to the BMX 25, and it’s a real alternative if you value insulation specs. It has 1.5-inch foam walls and lid, and a raised base Igloo calls Cool Riser to lift the body off hot ground. There’s also a locking plate and a lid gasket, which is what owners say the BMX lacks. The lock isn’t included.
It holds 38 cans by Igloo’s count, and it’s marked as made in the USA with USA and imported parts. We read no independent test of the 25, only of a larger Trailmate.
A note on our own pages: a different listing of this cooler is in our value cooler guide. It’s here too because it’s the small hard Trailmate, and it’s the fairest comparison to the BMX 25.
Why we like it
- 1.5-inch foam walls, per the listing
- Lid gasket and locking plate
- Made in USA with USA and imported parts
Key specifications
| Model | 00050214 |
|---|---|
| Type | Hard chest |
| Capacity | 25 qt |
| Cans, per Igloo | 38 |
| Insulation | 1.5-inch foam walls and lid |
| Carry | Swing-up bail handle |
| Lid or latch | Sure-Lock latches, gasket, lock plate |
| Made in | USA, with USA and imported parts |
Why we recommend it
It suits someone who wants a small cooler with a gasket and doesn’t need to tow it.
Skip it if you want evidence before you buy. The BMX has the independent results, and this size doesn’t.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Gasket on the lid
- Stated wall thickness
- Raised base
Cons
- No test of this size we read
- No wheels

4. Igloo Playmate Elite 16 Qt Cooler – The Classic Tent-Top for Lunch and Drinks

This is the shape most people picture when they think of Igloo: a small chest with a tent-top lid that swings open to either side and a molded handle. It holds 30 cans by Igloo’s count. For a day at the job site, or a few drinks and a container of pico de gallo, it does the job with no fuss.
It’s marked as made in the USA with USA and imported parts, and it carries a one-year warranty on the listing. What it doesn’t offer is a stated ice time. The listing makes no retention claim, and we read no test of it, so we’d plan on a day out rather than a weekend.
It also works as a second cooler. Drinks go in here so people aren’t opening the big chest full of food every few minutes.
Why we like it
- Lid opens to either side
- Molded-in carry handle
- Made in USA with USA and imported parts
Key specifications
| Model | IG32639 |
|---|---|
| Type | Small chest |
| Capacity | 16 qt |
| Cans, per Igloo | 30 |
| Insulation | Not stated |
| Carry | Molded-in carry handle |
| Lid or latch | Tent-top, push-button |
| Made in | USA, with USA and imported parts |
Why we recommend it
It suits one person’s lunch and drinks, or a second cooler at a cookout.
Skip it if you need ice to last overnight. Get a BMX or Trailmate.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Simple to use and carry
- Small enough for a car floor
- Handy second cooler for drinks
Cons
- No stated ice retention on listing
- No test we read
5. Igloo Profile II 30 Qt Cooler – Tall Enough for 2-Liter Bottles

The Profile II’s trick is height. The listing says it fits 2-liter bottles upright, which helps if you’re bringing soda or a jug of agua de jamaica to a party. It holds 41 cans, and the lid is slotted for stacking.
It uses THERMECOOL foam and the raised Cool Riser base, and the liner has channels for pouring off melted ice. It’s marked as made in the USA with USA and imported parts. The listing doesn’t give a model number, and we read no independent test, so we’d treat it as a day-trip cooler. It’s sold in several colors, and stock varies by color, so buy the one shown in stock.
Why we like it
- Fits 2-liter bottles upright, per the listing
- Channels for draining melted ice
- Slotted lid for stacking
Key specifications
| Model | Not stated |
|---|---|
| Type | Tall chest |
| Capacity | 30 qt |
| Cans, per Igloo | 41 |
| Insulation | THERMECOOL foam |
| Carry | Swing-up bail handle |
| Lid or latch | Not stated |
| Made in | USA, with USA and imported parts |
Why we recommend it
It suits a host who brings large bottles to a party and wants them to stand up.
Skip it if you want the longest ice life. The evidence we read favors the BMX and Trailmate.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Upright bottle space
- Easy to drain, per the listing
- Stated made in USA
Cons
- No model number on listing
- No test we read
6. Igloo Glide 110 Qt Roller Cooler – The Largest Wheeled Box Here

For a family reunion or a big fish fry, there are times when a 70-quart won’t do. The Glide 110 holds 168 cans, by the listing, with a telescoping handle and soft-ride wheels. It uses THERMECOOL insulation in the body and lid, stainless steel hinges and impact-resistant latches. A ruler on the lid is there for anglers.
A full 110-quart cooler is heavy, and we’d plan on two people to lift it into a vehicle. We read no independent test of the Glide, so the case for it is its size and its listed hardware. Don’t buy this much cooler unless you’ll fill most of it, since the best ice numbers we read all came from coolers packed full.
Why we like it
- Most capacity of our picks
- Stainless steel hinges, per the listing
- UV inhibitors listed for sun
Key specifications
| Model | 00034572 |
|---|---|
| Type | Hard roller |
| Capacity | 110 qt |
| Cans, per Igloo | 168 |
| Insulation | THERMECOOL body and lid |
| Carry | Telescoping handle, soft-ride wheels |
| Lid or latch | DuraLatch closures |
| Made in | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits a person who regularly feeds a big group or fishes from a boat.
Skip it if you usually cook for six. It’s too big, and a BMX or Trailmate is easier.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Huge capacity
- Telescoping handle
- Lid ruler for fish
Cons
- A two-person lift when full
- No test we read
- Takes a lot of ice to fill
7. Igloo Trailmate 18-Can Soft Cooler – A Shoulder Bag for a Short Trip

Sometimes you don’t want a hard box. This bag has 20mm of foam, a welded 600D polyester exterior that resists dirt, sand and water, an adjustable strap and a front zip pocket. It holds 18 cans by Igloo’s count, and the main compartment opens wide for packing containers.
It’s a lunch-and-a-few-drinks bag, not a substitute for a chest. We read no independent test of it. For a wider field of soft coolers, see our cooler bag guide.
Why we like it
- 20mm foam, per the listing
- Dirt-, sand- and water-resistant exterior
- Shoulder strap and front pocket
Key specifications
| Model | Not stated |
|---|---|
| Type | Soft bag |
| Capacity | 18 cans |
| Cans, per Igloo | 18 |
| Insulation | 20mm MaxCold Ultra foam |
| Carry | Adjustable shoulder strap |
| Lid or latch | Zippered main, pull-tab lid |
| Made in | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits someone walking or biking to a picnic with a light lunch.
Skip it if you’re carrying raw meat for a long day out. A hard chest with more ice is the better choice.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Easy to carry on a shoulder
- Wide opening for containers
- Zip pocket for small items
Cons
- Holds far less than a chest
- No test we read
- No model number on listing
Where Igloo falls short, and who to look at instead
Sealing. Owner comments gathered by Owners Review say the BMX has no factory lid gasket, so water can leak if it tips, and some people add their own weatherstripping. Tailgating Challenge says the Trailmate it had needs a locking lid for rough ground.
Hardware reports. One owner on Owners Review said hinge screws pulled out of a BMX within a few uses, and another said ice lasted only a day. Those are single reports, and the same page says most owners see three to five days or more.
Ice claims depend on the trial. The Cooler Zone got 48 to 72 hours from a 25-quart BMX half filled with ice, and Coolers On Sale got 6.5 days from one packed to capacity. Neither is wrong. It shows how much your ice load matters. Several of the reviewers we read earn affiliate commissions or link to Amazon, and Tailgating Challenge received a free sample.
Recalls. Igloo has recalled over a million 90-quart Flip & Tow rolling coolers made before January 2024 over a tow handle that can crush fingertips, and the remedy is a free replacement handle. In 2019, it recalled Marine Elite coolers with stainless latches sold from 2015 to 2019, since the latch could lock a person inside. The recalled 90 Qt Flip & Tow is not on this page, and none of our picks is on those lists as far as we can read, but check any older cooler you already own.
Who else to look at. For a tighter seal, our coolers guide has the YETI Tundra 45 and the RTIC 52, and our hard cooler guide goes further. You may not need them for an afternoon in the park.

How to choose an Igloo cooler
Buy for your trip length. For an afternoon, a Playmate or a soft bag is enough. For a weekend, the BMX and Trailmate lines are where the evidence is.
Size for what you’ll actually fill. Coolers On Sale’s best numbers come from coolers packed to capacity with ice. The Cooler Zone’s half-full numbers were far lower.
Decide whether you need wheels. A full 70-quart isn’t something you carry far. Wheels help on grass and sand, but they add bulk in the car. Our wheeled cooler guide has more.
Look at the lid. T-latches, gaskets and locking plates vary by line. If it rides in a truck bed, a closed and latched lid matters more than the can count.
Pack smart. Pre-chill it, as Coolers On Sale did, and use a second small cooler for drinks so the food cooler stays shut.
Don’t rely on the can count for food. A sheet tray of carne won’t sit like cans, so measure what you plan to carry against the inside of the cooler.

How we picked these seven Igloo coolers
We picked models that do something different: a blow-molded chest, a gasketed chest, a tent-top, a tall chest, an all-terrain roller, an oversized roller and a soft bag. Colors were counted once. The specs are from Amazon’s listings for each model, and the can counts are Igloo’s.
Independent evidence came from The Cooler Zone, Coolers On Sale, Tailgating Challenge and owner comments collected by Owners Review. A search for the larger review sites on these lines found nothing we could read, and several picks rest on the listing alone, which each write-up says. No one at Julia’s has used them.
Recall details come from the CPSC pages, which we read. One pick, the Trailmate 25, has a same-model listing on our value guide, as noted in its write-up. The BMX 52 and Trailmate 52 aren’t here for the same reason: they’re already on our coolers and wheeled cooler guides. Stock was checked through Amazon’s data when we wrote this, and we state no prices because they change.
Igloo cooler questions, answered
What’s the difference between Igloo BMX and Playmate?
The BMX is a blow-molded chest with extra-thick foam, T-latches and a reinforced grab handle, and it has independent ice results behind it. The Playmate is a smaller tent-top cooler with a push-button lid, and its listing makes no ice-retention claim. Think of the BMX for a weekend and the Playmate for a day.
How long does an Igloo BMX keep ice?
It depends on how it’s packed. The Cooler Zone got 48 to 72 hours from a 25-quart half filled in cool weather. Coolers On Sale got 6.5 days from a 25-quart filled to capacity.
Is the Igloo Trailmate worth it over the BMX?
If you want big wheels and a serving tray, yes, in the 70-quart. In a small chest, the Trailmate 25 adds a lid gasket and a stated wall thickness, while the BMX has the better evidence.
Were Igloo 90-quart coolers recalled?
Yes. CPSC lists Igloo 90-quart Flip & Tow rolling coolers made before January 2024, for a tow handle hazard. Igloo offers a free replacement handle. Check the model and date code on the bottom of your cooler against CPSC’s table.
Is any Igloo made in the USA?
Several listings here, including Trailmate 25, Playmate Elite and Profile II, say made in the USA with USA and imported parts. Other listings don’t state it.
Which Igloo cooler suits a backyard taco night?
A BMX 25 for meat and salsa, with a Playmate for drinks, covers most home parties without taking over the car. Our taco bar supplies guide covers the rest of the table.
Our final pick among Igloo coolers
For most home cooks, buy the BMX 25 and add a small second cooler for drinks. Move up to the Trailmate Journey 70 only if you feed a crowd away from the car. For the wider field, read our coolers guide and our value cooler guide.
And if you’d rather not pack a cooler at all tonight, see the menu or call to order.
