A Mexican kitchen makes a particular kind of trash. Onion skins and cilantro stems, lime halves squeezed for salsa and margaritas, avocado pits, shrimp shells, the paper from a pound of carnitas. By the second warm day, a bin with a loose lid announces itself the moment you walk in. The fix is partly habit, and partly the can.
This guide is narrower than our main kitchen trash can guide, which covers sizes, shapes and opening styles. Here we look only at what a can does about smell: how well the lid closes, whether it has a place for a carbon filter or odor pod, and what the maker says about refills. We describe odor features only as each maker states them; nobody publishes independent measurements for these cans, and we have not measured them either.

Quick verdict: which odor-control trash can to buy
For most kitchens, the Joseph Joseph Titan 30-Liter Compactor is the one to buy: a carbon filter sits in a compartment in its lid, Joseph Joseph says to replace it every three months, and a built-in press compacts the trash so you take it out less often. For a narrow space with nothing to refill, the Glad Slim 12-Gallon Step Can has odor protection built into the lid, per its listing. If you want a carbon filter and ordinary 13-gallon bags, choose the iTouchless SoftStep 13.2-Gallon Step Can.
Below, the five standouts side by side, then all seven cans in full, and what actually keeps a kitchen bin from smelling.

Our picks for the best kitchen trash can for odor control
Seven cans, each with something specific to keep smells in: a carbon filter, a deodorizer compartment, odor protection built into the lid or a lid the maker describes as sealing. None of them is a pick in our main trash can guide. One brand, Ninestars, appears there with a different, rectangular model; the oval model here is included for its odor-sealing lid, which is the point of this page.
1. Joseph Joseph Titan 30-Liter Compactor – Less Air, a Filter in the Lid

The Titan approaches odor from two sides. Inside the lid is an integrated compartment for replaceable carbon filters, and Joseph Joseph recommends replacing the filter every three months for best performance. The filters come in packs of two and also fit the maker’s Totem cans.
The bigger feature is the compactor. A built-in press squashes the contents, and Joseph Joseph says this cuts trash volume by 66 percent: the 30-liter can holds up to 90 liters once compacted. The maker’s point is that you take the trash out less often and use fewer liners. The press works on the inside of the bag, so only the bag touches the trash, and the anti-tear design is meant not to stretch or pinch the liner.
There is a trade-off here for odor. Holding three times as much trash means holding it longer, which is fine for packaging but not for shrimp shells or meat scraps in hot weather. Joseph Joseph says the pedal and compaction system have been tested over 100,000 times, and it gives a 10-year guarantee against manufacturing defects.
Why we like it
- Carbon filter compartment built into the lid
- Compacts trash to about a third of its volume, per the maker
- Works with standard liners or Joseph Joseph’s IW4 liners
- 10-year guarantee
Key specifications
| Model | 30030 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 30 L / 7.9 gal (up to 90 L compacted) |
| Opening | Step pedal |
| Odor feature | Carbon filter in the lid |
| Filter refills | Carbon filters, replace every 3 months |
| Bags | Standard liners or IW4 custom liners |
| Size | Not stated on listing |
| Warranty | 10-year guarantee |
Why we recommend it
It suits a household that fills a bin with bulky packaging and would rather not walk to the outside cart every day, but still wants a filter working on whatever smell there is.
Skip it if most of your trash is wet food scraps; compacting them means they stay in the kitchen longer, and a smaller bin emptied often will smell less.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Fewer bag changes
- Filter compartment in the lid
- Long guarantee
Cons
- Small 30-liter footprint fills quickly before compacting
- Trash stays longer in the kitchen
- Filters need replacing every three months
2. iTouchless SoftStep 13.2-Gallon Step Can – A Carbon Filter With Ordinary Bags

Many odor-control cans steer you toward their own liners. This one does not. iTouchless says the removable inner bucket fits standard store-bought 13-gallon drawstring bags, which keeps the running cost down. For smell, it has a built-in compartment for the maker’s AbsorbX odor filter, and one starter carbon filter comes in the box.
iTouchless describes AbsorbX as natural activated carbon that absorbs odors. Its refill listing says each filter provides up to three months of odor control, and that the filters are made for iTouchless cans of 8 gallons and larger that have a filter compartment. The maker also warns against third-party filters sold as compatible.
The lid closes softly on a replaceable AirNova air damper, according to the listing, so if the soft close ever wears, the part can be swapped. The stainless steel body is fingerprint-resistant and flat-backed to sit against a wall. iTouchless gives the size as 14.5 by 16.9 by 26.4 inches, rising to 36.3 inches with the lid open. The warranty term is not stated on the listing.
Why we like it
- AbsorbX carbon filter compartment, starter filter included
- Fits standard 13-gallon bags
- Replaceable soft-close damper
- Removable inner bucket for cleaning

Why we recommend it
It suits a kitchen that goes through a lot of bags and does not want to pay for custom liners, but still wants a proper carbon filter in the lid.
Skip it if you want a hands-free sensor; iTouchless’s sensor cans are covered in our main guide.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Ordinary bags fit
- Carbon filter included to start
- Damper can be replaced
Cons
- Filters are an ongoing purchase
- Inner bucket takes some space from the bag
- Warranty term not on the listing

3. EKO 13.2-Gallon Motion Sensor Can – Hands-Free With a Deodorizer Slot

When you are working with raw chicken or have masa on your hands, a sensor lid means you never touch the can. It also means the lid closes by itself, which matters for smell: a pedal can left with its lid propped open on a box or a bag handle lets odors out all afternoon. EKO’s listing describes smooth, hands-free opening and closing on this matte stainless model.
The listing title names a deodorizer compartment. EKO does not say in this listing exactly where it sits or what comes in it, so check the box contents. EKO does sell activated charcoal deodorizer filters, 3.15 inches square, for its cans with deodorizer compartments, and says each gives up to two months of odor absorption. It also sells plant-based deodorizer pods.
There is no inner liner, which EKO says gives 25 percent more room for trash. It runs on AA alkaline batteries, and the listing says they can last up to eight months; the number of batteries is not stated on this listing. The finish is described as fingerprint-resistant. The warranty term is not stated.
Why we like it
- Touch-free lid that closes itself
- Deodorizer compartment named in the listing
- EKO sells carbon filters stated to last up to two months
- No inner bucket, so more room for trash
Key specifications
| Model | EK9378MMT-50L |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 50 L / 13.2 gal |
| Opening | Motion sensor |
| Odor feature | Deodorizer compartment |
| Filter refills | EKO charcoal filters (up to 2 months) or pods |
| Bags | Not stated (no inner liner) |
| Size | Not stated on listing |
| Warranty | Not stated on listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits a cook who handles raw meat and fish often and wants a lid that opens without a touch and shuts on its own, with a place for a deodorizer.
Skip it if you do not want to think about batteries; a step can like the iTouchless does the same job with no power.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Lid closes automatically
- Deodorizer compartment
- Large opening, no inner bucket
Cons
- Needs batteries
- Listing is thin on details
- Filters sold separately
4. Joseph Joseph Totem Max 60-Liter – Scraps, Trash and Recycling Kept Apart

A lot of kitchen smell comes from mixing things that do not need to be mixed: a sticky salsa jar in with the coffee grounds, or wet scraps in with the cardboard. The Totem Max separates them. Joseph Joseph describes an 8-gallon general waste compartment at the top, an 8-gallon recycling drawer at the base, and a 0.8-gallon compost caddy with its own lid that can sit inside the waste compartment, in the drawer or on the counter.
For odor, the maker says a replaceable carbon filter inside the lid helps eliminate smells. It uses the same filters as the Titan, and Joseph Joseph recommends a new one every three months. Each compartment has a removable bucket with hooks to hold the liner and vents that make it easier to lift a full bag out.
It is a vertical design to save floor space. Joseph Joseph gives the size as 15.35 by 14.5 by 32 inches closed, and 43.8 inches tall with the lid open, so check the height under any wall cabinets. It carries a 10-year guarantee against manufacturing defects.
Why we like it
- Separate waste, recycling and compost sections
- Replaceable carbon filter in the lid
- Removable buckets with liner hooks
- 10-year guarantee
Key specifications
| Model | 30060 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 60 L total: two 8-gal sections plus 0.8-gal caddy |
| Opening | Lid on top, drawer at base |
| Odor feature | Carbon filter in the lid |
| Filter refills | Carbon filters, replace every 3 months |
| Bags | Liners held by bucket hooks |
| Size | 15.35 x 14.5 x 32 in (43.8 in open) |
| Warranty | 10-year guarantee |
Why we recommend it
It suits a kitchen that recycles and wants food scraps out of the main bag. Keeping the wet waste small and separate is one of the simplest ways to cut smell.
Skip it if you need one large bag for general trash; each section holds 8 gallons.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Sorts waste in one footprint
- Carbon filter in the lid
- Compost caddy included
Cons
- Each section is only 8 gallons
- Tall when open
- Filters need replacing every three months

5. Glad Slim 12-Gallon Step Can – Odor Protection Built Into the Lid

This Glad can takes a different approach from the filter cans. There is nothing to replace: the listing says the can is formulated with Clorox Protection to block unwanted odors, and describes an airtight seal. A Staples listing for a related Glad step can says the protection is in the lid and lid frame. Glad does not publish how long the effect lasts on this listing, so treat it as a help, not a substitute for emptying the bin.
The narrow, rectangular stainless body is made for tight spaces and small kitchens. Bag rings tuck away slack and hold the bag in place, and the lid closes softly. A stay-open option keeps the lid upright for a big clean-up or a long prep session, which is useful, but remember to close it afterward or the seal does nothing.
Glad’s warranty, as quoted on the listing, covers defects for five years from purchase, but it excludes products bought from unauthorized retailers, naming third-party sellers on the Amazon marketplace. Check who the seller is before you buy.
Why we like it
- Odor protection built in, nothing to refill
- Slim shape for small kitchens
- Bag rings hold the liner in place
- Five-year warranty from authorized sellers
Key specifications
| Model | GLD-74532 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 45 L / 12 gal |
| Opening | Step pedal, stay-open lid |
| Odor feature | Clorox Protection, sealing lid |
| Filter refills | None needed |
| Bags | Standard bags with bag rings |
| Size | Not stated on listing |
| Warranty | 5 years (authorized retailers only) |
Why we recommend it
It suits a small kitchen or an apartment where the can has to fit a narrow gap and nobody wants to remember filter refills.
Skip it if you want an odor feature you can renew; once built-in protection has done what it can, there is nothing to replace.
Pros and cons
Pros
- No filters or pods to buy
- Narrow footprint
- Soft-close lid
Cons
- Duration of odor protection not stated
- Warranty excludes marketplace sellers
- Size not on the listing
6. Ninestars 13-Gallon Oval Sensor Can – A Close-Fitting Lid That Shuts Itself

Ninestars makes the rectangular sensor can in our main guide; this is its oval model, and it earns a place here for the lid. The listing describes a precision-fit lid that closes softly and securely, sealing odors inside. There is no filter or pod; the odor control is the seal and the fact that the lid closes on its own after each use.
A wave opens it, or a tap on the button keeps it open for a bigger clean-up. The oval shape gives a wide opening for bulky waste while sitting close to cabinets, according to Ninestars. A removable liner ring holds the bag and hides its edges.
It runs on three C batteries, not included, which the listing says last up to nine months. The finish is described as fingerprint-resistant stainless steel, and the listing gives a two-year manufacturer warranty, which Ninestars calls a two-year support program.
Why we like it
- Close-fitting lid that the maker says seals in odors
- Lid closes automatically after each use
- Button to hold it open for clean-ups
- Two-year warranty, per listing
Key specifications
| Model | DZT-50-25 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 50 L / 13 gal |
| Opening | Motion sensor or button |
| Odor feature | Odor-sealing lid |
| Filter refills | None (no filter) |
| Bags | Standard bags on a liner ring |
| Size | Not stated on listing |
| Warranty | 2 years, per listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits a cook who wants a hands-free lid and has decided that a good seal, without filter refills, is enough for their kitchen.
Skip it if your bin takes a lot of fish or meat scraps; a can with a carbon filter, such as the iTouchless or EKO, gives you a second line of defense.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Lid closes on its own
- Wide oval opening
- No refills to buy
Cons
- No filter or pod
- Needs three C batteries
- Size not on the listing
7. Simpli-Magic 13.2-Gallon Step Can – A Filter Holder on a Plain Step Can

Simpli-Magic, which says its cans are designed in California, makes this stainless step can with a built-in odor filter holder. Its own product page calls it a built-in odor filter, but the Amazon listing says plainly that no cartridge is included, so plan to buy filters separately. Ask the seller or Simpli-Magic which refill fits before you order.
The rest is a straightforward 13-gallon step can: a metal foot pedal, a lid that closes quietly without slamming, a stay-open lock for bag changes, a removable plastic liner and a fingerprint-resistant finish. Simpli-Magic says it fits most brands of trash bags and matches its own Code B bags. The interior hinge is designed to sit flush against a wall or cabinet without scuffing.
The listing states only a “limited” warranty, with no term. It is the least documented can here, but it is a real step can with a filter holder from a named maker, and it uses ordinary bags.
Why we like it
- Built-in odor filter holder
- Quiet-close lid with a stay-open lock
- Fits most brands of 13-gallon bags
- Removable plastic liner for cleaning
Key specifications
| Model | 79514 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 50 L / 13.2 gal |
| Opening | Step pedal, stay-open lock |
| Odor feature | Built-in filter holder |
| Filter refills | Not included; type not stated |
| Bags | Most 13-gallon bags |
| Size | Not stated (package 28.8 x 17.4 x 16.2 in) |
| Warranty | Limited (term not stated) |
Why we recommend it
It suits a cook who wants a plain stainless step can with ordinary bags and a place for a filter, and does not need a long warranty or a sensor.
Skip it if you want a filter in the box and a clearly stated warranty; the iTouchless gives you both a starter filter and a named refill.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Filter holder on a simple step can
- Ordinary bags fit
- Quiet lid
Cons
- No filter cartridge included
- Refill type not stated
- Warranty term not stated
What actually keeps a kitchen bin from smelling
No can makes garbage stop smelling. What a good can does is keep the smell inside until you take the bag out. Four things do most of the work.
A lid that shuts fully. A slow-close or sensor lid that settles all the way down does more than any filter. A lid that bounces, or one held open by a stray box, undoes everything else.
An absorber inside the lid. Carbon filters (iTouchless, Joseph Joseph, EKO) work in the air under the lid. Each maker gives a replacement interval, from up to two months to three months. Write the date on the filter when you put it in.
Separating wet scraps. Lime rinds, onion trimmings and meat or shrimp scraps produce most of the smell. Keeping them in a small lidded caddy, like the one in the Totem Max, and emptying it daily keeps the main bin cleaner. Good food storage containers also mean fewer leftovers go into the bin in the first place.
Cleaning the can. Spills that leak through the bag soak into a bucket or the base. A removable inner bucket (iTouchless, Totem Max) or plastic liner (Simpli-Magic) is easier to wash out than a can with no removable parts.

How to choose a trash can that controls odor
Choose the odor feature you will maintain. A carbon filter or pod only helps while it is fresh. If you will not remember refills, a sealing lid (Ninestars) or built-in protection (Glad) asks less of you.
Check the refill cost and fit. iTouchless AbsorbX filters, EKO charcoal filters and Joseph Joseph filters are all sold by the makers. Buy the maker’s own refill where you can; iTouchless specifically warns against imitations.
Match the opening to how you cook. A pedal or sensor keeps raw-meat hands off the lid. A sensor also closes the lid for you; a pedal can relies on you letting go.
Size it to how often you empty it. A bigger can that sits for a week will smell more than a smaller one emptied every two days. For a busy kitchen, 12 to 13 gallons is common; a compactor such as the Titan holds more but keeps it longer.
Think about bags. Custom liners fit neatly and seal well against the rim, but cost more. Cans that take standard 13-gallon bags (iTouchless, Ninestars, Simpli-Magic, Glad) keep running costs down.
Safety and recall check
Before writing this page we searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall database for trash cans and for each brand here: Joseph Joseph, iTouchless, EKO, Glad, Ninestars and Simpli-Magic. The only trash can recall it returned was a 2015 recall of an EKO 80-liter motion sensor can, model EK9288BMT-80L, sold at Costco, for a laceration hazard from a protective collar that could come loose. That is a different model from the 50-liter EKO can on this page. We found no recalls for the other brands’ trash cans. A recall can be announced at any time, so check cpsc.gov/Recalls before you buy.
How we chose these seven odor-control cans
We started from what a kitchen that handles raw meat, seafood, citrus and onions every day needs from a bin: a lid that closes fully and some way to deal with smell between bag changes. We looked for kitchen cans sold on Amazon in the United States by identifiable makers, with an odor feature the maker names, and checked each one’s stock with Amazon’s product data before writing. Odor features, refill intervals, sizes and warranties come from the makers’ own pages where we could read them (iTouchless, Joseph Joseph and Simpli-Magic) and otherwise from the Amazon listing. We report odor performance only as each maker states it; we have not measured it, and we have not found independent measurements to cite. We left out the cans in our main trash can guide, listings from anonymous sellers, a simplehuman sensor listing whose details contradicted each other, and cans whose odor claims were vague. Our under-sink organizer guide covers bins that hide in a cabinet.

Odor-control trash can questions, answered
What kind of trash can is best for odor control?
One with a lid that closes fully and a place for a carbon filter. Of the cans here, the iTouchless SoftStep and the Joseph Joseph Titan and Totem Max all combine both.
Do carbon filters in trash cans work?
The makers say they absorb odors, and each gives a replacement interval: up to three months for iTouchless AbsorbX and Joseph Joseph filters, and up to two months for EKO’s. We have not found independent measurements, so treat them as one part of odor control, alongside a tight lid and regular emptying.
Are sensor trash cans better for smell?
They close the lid on their own, so it is never left propped open, and you never touch them with raw-meat hands. A step can with a slow-close lid does nearly the same job without batteries.
How often should I change the odor filter?
Follow the maker: up to two months for EKO’s charcoal filter, and up to three months for iTouchless and Joseph Joseph filters.
How do I stop my kitchen trash from smelling?
Empty wet scraps often, keep them separate if you can, close the lid every time, keep the filter fresh and wash the can when something leaks. Leftovers stored well and eaten in time, as in our guide to reheating Mexican leftovers, also keep food out of the bin.
Our pick for a fresher-smelling kitchen
Buy the Joseph Joseph Titan if you want a carbon filter in the lid and fewer trips outside. Choose the iTouchless SoftStep for a carbon filter with ordinary bags, the EKO for a hands-free lid, the Totem Max to sort scraps from recycling, and the Glad Slim for a narrow space with nothing to refill. For every other kind of kitchen bin, see our kitchen trash can guide.
And if tonight you would rather leave the shrimp shells and lime rinds to us, see the menu or call to order.
