Oven, Microwave, Freezer: Best Meal Prep Containers Glass

Glass meal prep sets, single and divided, with each maker's oven, microwave and freezer limits and what it says about the lid.

Glass is the meal-prep container a working kitchen trusts for food that gets reheated. Makers say it resists the stains and smells that plastic picks up from a chile colorado or last week’s carnitas, and a glass base can usually go into the oven, which plastic cannot. The trade-offs are weight, the risk of breakage, and a set of rules about heat and cold that each maker states a little differently.

This guide is the glass-only branch of our meal prep containers guide. That page compares plastic and glass across the board; here every pick is glass, and for each one we give the oven, microwave and freezer limits as the maker states them, plus what the maker says about the lid. Where a maker also appears on the parent page, we explain why this is a different container.

Quick verdict: which glass meal prep containers to buy

For most people, the best meal prep containers glass sets start with the Prep Naturals 30 oz Glass Meal Prep Containers, 5-Pack: one open borosilicate compartment that fits rice, beans and a main, with the maker stating oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher use for the glass. If you want the food kept apart, choose the JoyJolt 3-Compartment Glass Meal Prep Containers, 5-Pack. For soups and stews that go from freezer to oven, the OXO Good Grips Smart Seal 4-Cup Glass Round Container is the pick.

Below, each container’s heat limits come straight from its maker, so you know which lid can go in the microwave and which glass needs to thaw first.

Our picks for the best meal prep containers glass

These seven sets cover the shapes people actually prep in: a single open compartment, divided trays, mixed sets, round bowls for soup and small portion cups. We left out every container already on our meal prep containers guide, our glass food storage guide and our food storage containers guide. Three makers do appear on those pages with different products, and each review says why this one is here.

1. Prep Naturals 30 oz Glass Meal Prep Containers, 5-Pack – One Open Compartment, Oven-Ready Glass

Best overallPrepNaturals 5 Pack 30oz Glass Meal Prep Containers - 1 Compartment

Our parent guide recommends Prep Naturals’ three-compartment set. This is the same maker’s single-compartment container, and for a lot of Mexican home cooking it is the more useful shape: rice, beans and a guisado sit together the way they would on a plate, and enchiladas or a square of chilaquiles fit without being cut to suit a divider.

Each container holds 30 ounces (880 ml, per the model name). Prep Naturals says the bases are borosilicate glass and are oven safe, microwave safe, freezer safe and dishwasher safe, and that the lids are airtight and leak-resistant. The Amazon listing does not give a maximum oven temperature, and retailer listings for the same set describe the glass as oven safe with the lids excluded, so keep the lid out of the oven and check the instructions in the box before baking in it.

Five containers is one work week of lunches. The rectangular shape stacks in the fridge and lines up in a lunch bag.

Why we like it

  • Borosilicate glass, per Prep Naturals
  • Maker lists oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher use
  • 30 oz holds a full plate of food
  • BPA-free, per the listing

Key specifications

Model 5 Pack 880 ml, 1 Compartment
Glass type Borosilicate
Capacity 30 oz each
Count 5 containers, 5 lids
Compartments 1
Oven Glass oven safe; temperature not stated; lids out
Microwave and freezer Both, per maker
Lid Airtight, leak-resistant; BPA-free

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who preps the same lunch five times a week and wants one container that reheats in the microwave at work or in the oven at home.

Skip it if you dislike food touching; the divided JoyJolt or Bayco sets below keep sides apart.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Open shape fits enchiladas and casseroles
  • Glass base for microwave and oven
  • Five containers for a work week

Cons

  • No maximum oven temperature on the listing
  • Glass is heavier to carry than plastic

2. JoyJolt 3-Compartment Glass Meal Prep Containers, 5-Pack – A Main and Two Sides

Best dividedJoyJolt Divided Food Storage Containers with Lids Airtight. 5 Pack Glass Meal Prep Containers 3 Compartment Set Glass Bento Box. Reusable Food Containers

A divided glass tray is the meal-prep version of a combination plate: the main in the big section, rice and beans or a salad in the two small ones. JoyJolt’s container measures 8.2 x 6.3 x 2.7 inches, with two 6.8-ounce sections and one 9.3-ounce section, according to the listing.

JoyJolt says the glass is thick borosilicate, about 1.85 pounds per container, and that it goes from refrigerator to microwave without cracking from the change in temperature. Its rules for the lid are specific: freezer with the lid on, microwave and oven with the lid off. The lids are BPA-free plastic with a small removable silicone seal, and everything is dishwasher safe.

Two honest details from the maker itself: the dividers do not reach all the way to the lid, so a wet salsa can travel between sections if the container tips, and the containers do not nest when empty. JoyJolt states a 12-month warranty.

Why we like it

  • Three sections with stated capacities
  • Borosilicate glass, per JoyJolt
  • Clear lid rules: on in the freezer, off in the microwave and oven
  • 12-month warranty stated on the listing

Key specifications

Model JW10534
Glass type Borosilicate
Capacity 6.8 + 6.8 + 9.3 fl oz; 8.2 x 6.3 x 2.7 in.
Count 5 containers, 5 lids
Compartments 3 (dividers stop short of the lid)
Oven Lid off; temperature not stated
Microwave and freezer Microwave lid off; freezer lid on
Lid BPA-free plastic, removable silicone seal

Why we recommend it

It suits portion-minded preppers and anyone packing a main with two sides who wants glass instead of plastic.

Skip it if you pack saucy food in the side sections; with dividers that stop short of the lid, liquids can mix.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Built-in portions
  • Thick glass, per the maker
  • Dishwasher safe, seal removes for cleaning

Cons

  • Dividers do not seal sections from each other
  • Does not nest when empty
  • About 1.85 pounds each

3. Bayco 9-Pack Glass Meal Prep Set, 1, 2 and 3 Compartments – Three Shapes in One Box

Best mixed setBayco 9 Pack 3

If your week mixes plain leftovers, two-part lunches and full plates, a mixed set saves buying three. Bayco’s nine containers come in three shapes, according to the listing: three single-compartment rectangles of 630 ml (2.7 cups), three two-compartment containers of 580 ml (2.5 cups) and three three-compartment containers of 960 ml (4.1 cups).

Bayco says the glass is borosilicate and the containers are safe in the oven, the microwave, the freezer and the dishwasher, with one exception spelled out: the lids do not go in the microwave. The lids are BPA-free plastic with a removable silicone sealing ring. Bayco says the lids can go in the dishwasher but recommends washing them by hand where you can, because long exposure to high heat can deform the seal. The listing’s heat figure for the glass reads oddly, so we go by its plain statements on use.

Bayco also advises not stacking the containers glass on glass without something between them, to avoid friction and breakage. Wash and dry lids and bases before you put them away so the seal does not stick.

Why we like it

  • Three container shapes in one set
  • Borosilicate glass, per Bayco
  • Removable seal for cleaning
  • Maker spells out the lid’s limits

Key specifications

Model Not stated
Glass type Borosilicate
Capacity 2.7, 2.5 and 4.1 cups
Count 9 containers, 9 lids
Compartments 1, 2 and 3 (three of each)
Oven Glass oven safe; lids out
Microwave and freezer Microwave (not the lids); freezer safe
Lid BPA-free plastic, removable silicone ring; hand wash preferred

Why we recommend it

It suits households where each person preps differently, or anyone who wants to try divided and open containers before buying more of one kind.

Skip it if you want one size that stacks neatly; three shapes take more thought in the fridge.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Nine containers in three shapes
  • Borosilicate glass
  • Clear care guidance from the maker

Cons

  • Lids cannot go in the microwave
  • Maker recommends hand-washing lids
  • Glass should not be stacked bare

4. OXO Good Grips Smart Seal 4-Cup Glass Round Container – Freezer to Oven for Soups

Best for soupsOXO Good Grips Smart Seal 4-Cup Glass Food Storage Container - Arctic Blue

Pozole, caldo de res and frijoles charros freeze well and reheat best in a round, deep container. OXO’s Smart Seal round holds 4 cups, and OXO says its borosilicate glass is designed to go from the freezer to the oven. OXO’s product pages specify a preheated oven, so put the container into an oven that is already hot rather than heating them together.

The lid locks with four tabs, and OXO calls it leakproof; the silicone seal comes out for cleaning. The listing says the glass goes from freezer to oven or microwave, the title calls it dishwasher safe, and the lid fits any same-size OXO Smart Seal glass container. Empty, the containers nest and stack.

OXO appears on our food storage guide with a 16-piece Smart Seal set. This 4-cup round is here for a narrower reason: a soup-size container for people who already own rectangles and need a container that goes straight from freezer to oven.

Why we like it

  • Borosilicate glass, freezer to preheated oven, per OXO
  • Four locking tabs on a leakproof lid
  • Removable gasket
  • Nests and stacks when empty

Key specifications

Model 11437100 (Arctic Blue)
Glass type Borosilicate
Capacity 4 cups
Count 1 container, 1 lid
Compartments 1, round
Oven Freezer to preheated oven; temperature not stated
Microwave and freezer Both, per listing
Lid Four locking tabs, removable gasket

Why we recommend it

It suits batch cooks who freeze soups and stews in portions and want to reheat them in the oven without moving them to another dish.

Skip it if you need a full week’s set; a single container is a supplement, not a system.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Freezer-to-oven glass, per OXO
  • Deep round shape for liquids
  • Lid fits any same-size OXO Smart Seal glass container

Cons

  • Sold singly; buy two or three for a week of soup
  • No maximum oven temperature on the listing

5. Anchor Hocking 2-Cup Glass Containers with SnugFit Lids, Set of 4 – Made in the USA, Small Portions

Best small portionsAnchor Hocking 2 Cup Glass Storage Containers with Lids

Small rounds are for the parts of a meal that do not belong in the main container: salsa, crema, pickled onions, a side of rice. Anchor Hocking’s set is four 2-cup round containers with blueberry SnugFit lids, and the company says the glass is made in the USA, in Ohio.

Anchor Hocking describes the glass as tempered and gives a heat limit of up to 425°F, and lists fridge, freezer, oven and microwave use. The SnugFit lids are top-rack dishwasher safe. One rule matters here: Anchor Hocking’s care instructions say glass can store food in the fridge or freezer but should not go straight from the freezer into the oven or microwave; thaw the food first. That is the main practical difference from the borosilicate picks above.

Anchor Hocking states a five-year warranty on the glass when it is used according to its instructions. Our glass storage guide includes a larger Anchor Hocking SnugFit set; this four-pack is here for its portion size.

Why we like it

  • Made in the USA, per Anchor Hocking
  • Stated oven limit of 425°F
  • Five-year warranty on the glass
  • Top-rack dishwasher-safe lids

Key specifications

Model 14866ECOM
Glass type Tempered glass
Capacity 2 cups each
Count 4 containers, 4 lids
Compartments 1, round
Oven Up to 425°F; thaw before heating
Microwave and freezer Both, per maker; not freezer straight to heat
Lid SnugFit plastic, top-rack dishwasher safe; BPA status not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who packs sauces and sides separately, and buyers who want glass made in the USA with a long warranty.

Skip it if you want to reheat straight from frozen; Anchor Hocking asks you to thaw first.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Right size for salsas and sides
  • Made in Ohio
  • Five-year warranty

Cons

  • Not freezer to oven
  • Too small for a main meal
  • Lid’s BPA status not stated on the listing

6. Rubbermaid Brilliance Glass 3.2-Cup Containers, Set of 4 – Vented Lids for the Microwave

Best microwave lidsRubbermaid Brilliance Glass Food Storage Containers

Most glass meal-prep lids have to come off in the microwave. Rubbermaid’s Brilliance lids are an exception: they are vented and microwave safe for reheating, with the latches undone, according to Rubbermaid. That keeps a lid over the food against splatter while it heats at work.

Each container holds 3.2 cups, a single-meal size. Rubbermaid says the glass bases are oven safe up to 450°F, the clear lids are airtight, leak-proof and BPA-free, and the whole set is dishwasher safe with the lids on the top rack, and freezer safe. The lids fit every Brilliance container, glass or plastic.

Our food storage guide recommends a 9-piece Brilliance Glass set in assorted sizes. This set is four of one meal-sized container, which is what a meal-prep week needs, and the lids are the reason to choose it over the other glass here.

Why we like it

  • Vented lids stay on to reheat, latches open
  • Glass oven safe to 450°F, per Rubbermaid
  • BPA-free, airtight, leak-proof lids
  • Lids fit all Brilliance containers

Key specifications

Model 2118319
Glass type Not stated
Capacity 3.2 cups each
Count 4 containers, 4 lids
Compartments 1
Oven Glass up to 450°F; lids out
Microwave and freezer Microwave with lid unlatched; freezer safe
Lid Vented, BPA-free, airtight; top-rack dishwasher

Why we recommend it

It suits office lunches reheated in a shared microwave, where a lid you can leave on keeps the microwave clean.

Skip it if you need five or more matching containers; this set is four.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Lid stays on for reheating
  • Highest stated oven limit here
  • Modular lids

Cons

  • Glass type not stated
  • Four containers only

7. Ello Duraglass Refresh 3.4-Cup Glass Meal Prep Containers, 5-Pack – A Silicone Boot Against Chips

Best for carryingEllo Duraglass Refresh 3.4 Cup Meal Prep Containers

Glass that travels in a bag every day gets knocked. Ello wraps each of these containers in a removable, extra-thick silicone boot that the company says protects against chips and breaks, and the boot can stay on in the dishwasher and the microwave.

The set is five 3.4-cup tempered glass containers with five BPA-free locking lids. Ello says the containers are oven and microwave safe without the lid, freezer safe, and that every part is top-rack dishwasher safe. Ello does not give a maximum oven temperature on the listing. The glass resists stains and odors, according to the maker.

Our parent guide recommends Ello’s divided Duraglass set. This is the single-compartment version, here for people who want the protective boot on an open container.

Why we like it

  • Silicone boot protects the glass, per Ello
  • Boot stays on in the dishwasher and microwave
  • BPA-free locking lids
  • Five containers in the set

Key specifications

Model 169-1041-025-2
Glass type Tempered glass
Capacity 3.4 cups each
Count 5 containers, 5 lids
Compartments 1
Oven Without lid; temperature not stated
Microwave and freezer Microwave without lid; freezer safe
Lid BPA-free locking lid; top-rack dishwasher

Why we recommend it

It suits commuters and students who carry lunch in a backpack and worry about glass knocking against things.

Skip it if you want to bake in the container; check whether the boot can go in the oven, because the listing names only the dishwasher and microwave.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Protective silicone boot
  • Five matching containers
  • Everything top-rack dishwasher safe

Cons

  • No oven temperature stated
  • Boot adds bulk in the fridge

How to choose glass meal prep containers

Borosilicate or tempered glass

Makers sell two kinds of glass for meal prep. Prep Naturals, JoyJolt, Bayco and OXO describe theirs as borosilicate, and OXO and JoyJolt specifically say it handles moving from cold to hot. Anchor Hocking and Ello describe theirs as tempered, and Anchor Hocking’s care instructions say not to go straight from freezer to oven or microwave. Neither kind is a reason to skip the maker’s instructions; they decide whether you can reheat from frozen or must thaw first.

The lid has its own rules

The glass may be oven safe while the lid is not. Every lid here stays out of the oven. Most also come off in the microwave; Rubbermaid’s Brilliance lid is the exception, with its latches open. If the BPA status of the lid matters to you, check the listing: most makers here state BPA-free lids, and we note where one does not.

One compartment or several

Open containers fit more kinds of food, from enchiladas to a stew. Divided ones keep a main and sides apart, but check whether the dividers reach the lid; JoyJolt says its do not.

Broth being poured into a glass jar layered with vegetables
Broth poured over vegetables in a glass jar.

Size for one meal

Around 3 to 4 cups is a typical single meal-prep size, and the picks here sit mostly in that range. Small 2-cup rounds are for sides and sauces, not mains.

Weight and storage

Glass is heavier than plastic, and some sets nest when empty while others do not. If the containers live in a crowded cupboard, OXO’s nesting rounds take the least space.

Cooling and reheating safely

FDA advises refrigerating perishable food within two hours, or one hour if the air is above 90°F, and storing leftovers in tight containers (FDA, Are You Storing Food Safely?). USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service advises dividing large amounts into small, shallow containers so they cool quickly, keeping leftovers 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator, and reheating them to 165°F (USDA FSIS, Leftovers and Food Safety). Meal-prep-sized glass containers suit that advice well.

How we picked these seven glass sets

We did not use these containers ourselves. We started with what a restaurant kitchen wants from a container that holds cooked food: a tight lid, a material that does not stain or hold smells, and clear rules for heating it. Then we read each maker’s listing for glass type, capacity, oven, microwave and freezer limits and the lid’s material, and wrote “not stated” where a maker gives no figure. Every pick was in stock on Amazon when we checked, every maker is identifiable, and we checked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall database for each brand. We excluded every product on our meal prep and storage guides, and passed over anonymous Amazon-only sellers.

Glass meal prep questions, answered

Which are the best quality glass meal prep containers?

For quality, look for glass type and heat limits that the maker states plainly, lids with removable seals, and a warranty. Prep Naturals, JoyJolt and Bayco state borosilicate glass; Anchor Hocking states a five-year warranty and a 425°F limit; Rubbermaid states 450°F.

Can glass meal prep containers go from freezer to oven?

Some can. OXO says its borosilicate Smart Seal glass goes from the freezer to a preheated oven. Anchor Hocking says to thaw first. Follow the maker of the container you own.

Can I microwave the lids?

Usually not. Bayco, JoyJolt and Ello say to remove the lid. Rubbermaid’s Brilliance lids are vented for microwave reheating with the latches open.

How long do meal-prepped leftovers keep?

USDA FSIS advises 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator, or about 3 to 4 months in the freezer for best quality. Reheat to 165°F.

Is glass better than plastic for meal prep?

Glass does not stain or hold odors, according to several makers here, and its bases can go in the oven. Plastic is lighter and does not break. Our meal prep containers guide compares both.
