Plug-In, Solar or Smart? The Best Outdoor String Lights

Eight patio strands from Brightech, Enbrighten, addlon, Minetom, Govee and Feit, compared on length, bulbs, power, water rating and UL or ETL listing.

A long outdoor picnic table under trees lit by strands of string lights at night
A long outdoor table under string lights after dark.

Walk past any Mexican restaurant patio after dark and you will see the same thing: a run of warm bulbs strung over the tables, sagging a little between the posts. It is the cheapest way to turn a slab of concrete into somewhere people want to stay for one more round. At home, a strand of string lights does the same for a backyard carne asada that runs past sunset, a posada in December or a summer night when nobody wants to go inside.

This guide compares eight outdoor string lights: four plug-in strands for permanent patio lighting from Brightech, Enbrighten, addlon and Minetom, a smart color strand from Govee, two solar strands from Brightech and addlon, and a short flame-effect set from Feit Electric. For each we list length and bulb count, bulb type, power, the weather and safety listing the maker states, and whether it dims or connects to an app. Where the maker or listing says nothing, we write “Not stated”.

Quick verdict: which outdoor string lights to buy

For most patios, the Brightech Ambience Pro LED String Lights, 48 ft are the best outdoor string lights to start with: 15 dimmable 2-watt LED bulbs on a heavy rubberized cord that Brightech says is UL listed and built for wind, rain and snow, with a three-year limited warranty. For a long run of café lights, the Enbrighten Classic Outdoor String Lights, 48 ft pack 24 shatterproof acrylic bulbs per strand, link up to 750 feet and carry an ETL listing for permanent outdoor installation. With no outlet nearby, the Brightech Ambience Pro Solar String Lights run from a stake-mounted panel and switch on at dusk.

The table compares the five picks that cover the most yards. All eight are reviewed in full after it.

Our picks for the best outdoor string lights

The first four are plug-in strands meant to stay up over a patio, followed by a smart strand, two solar strands and a short accent set. Each pick says who it suits and gives one honest reason to skip it.

1. Brightech Ambience Pro LED String Lights, 48 ft – Warm, Dimmable and Built to Stay Up

Best overallBrightech Ambience Pro LED Outdoor String Lights - Commercial Grade Waterproof Patio Lights with 48 Ft Dimmable Edison Bulbs

Brightech’s Ambience Pro is the strand that looks the most like restaurant patio lighting: 15 vintage Edison-style bulbs hanging from a heavy black cord, three feet apart. Each bulb is a 2-watt LED on a standard base, and the listing we link is 2700K soft white, close to the glow of old filament bulbs. Brightech says the light is bright enough to grill and eat by, and that the bulbs never get hot even after hours on.

The build is the reason to choose it over cheaper strands. Brightech calls it commercial grade, rates the cord, with what it calls WeatherTite technology, for winds up to 50 mph, rain and snow, and says the core is UL listed, so it can stay up year round. The cord is rubberized and thicker than a standard strand. Up to 20 strands connect end to end.

The bulbs are dimmable, but the dimmer is sold separately, and the strand is made for 110-volt use only. Brightech backs it with a three-year limited warranty when bought from Brightech USA. The listing does not give an IP rating.

Why we like it

  • Soft white 2700K LED Edison bulbs
  • Rated for 50 mph wind, rain and snow (Brightech)
  • UL-listed core, per the listing
  • Three-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model IB-E26-18A1502
Length & bulbs 48 ft, 15 bulbs, 3 ft apart
Bulb type 2 W LED, standard base, Edison style; shatterproof not stated
Power Plug-in, 110 V; up to 20 strands linked
Weather rating No IP rating; wind to 50 mph, rain and snow (Brightech)
Safety listing UL-listed core (listing)
Dimmable/smart Dimmable (dimmer sold separately); not smart
Warranty 3-year limited (from Brightech USA)

Why we recommend it

It suits a patio or pergola where the lights stay up all year, and anyone who wants the warm, low glow of a restaurant patio rather than a bright white light.

Skip it if you want the brightest strand for working at the grill. Fifteen 2-watt bulbs over 48 feet is mood light; add a grill light for the cooking.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Heavy, rubberized cord
  • Stated wind and weather limits
  • Long warranty

Cons

  • Dimmer extra
  • No IP rating given

2. Enbrighten Classic Outdoor String Lights, 48 ft – Dense Café Lights With a Lifetime Warranty

Best café lightsEnbrighten Classic Outdoor String Lights

Enbrighten puts 24 bulbs on a 48-foot strand, about twice as many as most strands here, so the light reads as a continuous line rather than a row of dots. The bulbs are acrylic Edison-style LEDs in 2700K warm white, and Enbrighten says they are impact resistant and won’t shatter if dropped, stepped on or blown about by wind. That matters over a table where children run around and a broken glass bulb would land in the food.

Installation is tidy. A keyhole slot above each bulb hangs straight onto a hook, screw, nail or guide wire, and each strand links end to end up to 750 feet, enough to wrap a large yard. Enbrighten states the strand is ETL safety certified for permanent indoor and outdoor installation, and calls the LEDs lifetime LEDs.

The listing gives a limited lifetime warranty. It does not say whether the strand works with a dimmer, and it gives no IP rating beyond “weatherproof”.

Why we like it

  • 24 bulbs per 48-foot strand
  • Shatterproof acrylic bulbs
  • ETL certified for permanent outdoor installation
  • Links to 750 ft; limited lifetime warranty

Key specifications

Model 31664
Length & bulbs 48 ft, 24 bulbs
Bulb type LED, acrylic Edison style, shatterproof
Power Plug-in; links up to 750 ft
Weather rating “Weatherproof”; no IP rating stated
Safety listing ETL, permanent indoor/outdoor installation
Dimmable/smart Not stated; not smart
Warranty Limited lifetime

Why we recommend it

It suits a large yard or a long pergola where you want many bulbs close together, and households with children where shatterproof bulbs are worth having.

Skip it if you plan to dim the lights. Enbrighten does not say this strand works with a dimmer.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Most bulbs per foot here
  • Very long linking limit
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Dimming not stated
  • No IP rating

3. addlon LED Outdoor String Lights, 48 ft – ETL-Listed Bistro Lights With Spares

Best valueaddlon LED Outdoor String Lights 48FT Edison Vintage Weatherproof ETL

addlon’s 48-foot strand is a straightforward bistro light: 15 hanging sockets about 3.1 feet apart, each with a shatterproof E17 LED Edison bulb. The listing describes the strand as ETL listed and commercial grade, built for year-round use, with insulation meant to stand up to sun, rain, wind, snow and damp. A T-shaped suspension wire and built-in hooks let you hang it from guide wire, nails or zip ties.

Two details make it easy to live with. The bulbs are replaceable, and a spare fuse comes in the box, so one dark socket does not mean a dead strand. addlon even explains what to do first: tighten the bulb another turn or two, then swap it if it still will not light. Up to 28 strands connect end to end, and the strand works with a dimmer, which you buy separately.

The warranty field on the listing says three years, while the description mentions a one-year replacement service; check which applies when you order. No IP rating is given.

Why we like it

  • ETL listed, commercial grade (listing)
  • Shatterproof, replaceable LED bulbs
  • Spare fuse included
  • Dimmer compatible; links up to 28 strands

Key specifications

Model JCD-DL/E17/15
Length & bulbs 48 ft, 15 sockets, 3.11 ft apart
Bulb type E17 LED Edison, shatterproof
Power Plug-in; up to 28 strands linked
Weather rating “Weatherproof”; no IP rating stated
Safety listing ETL listed (listing)
Dimmable/smart Dimmable (dimmer not included); not smart
Warranty 3 years (listing field); 1-year replacement service in description

Why we recommend it

It suits a first set of patio lights, or adding strands to cover a bigger space, where a safety listing, spare parts and dimming matter more than a brand name.

Skip it if you want one clear warranty. The listing gives two different terms.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Spare fuse in the box
  • Replaceable bulbs
  • Works with a dimmer

Cons

  • Conflicting warranty terms
  • No IP rating

4. Minetom 101 ft Outdoor String Lights – One Long Run, IP65 Rated

Longest single strandMinetom 101FT Outdoor String Lights S14 LED Waterproof Patio Lights

Most strands are 48 feet, which means joining two or three to cross a yard. Minetom makes one 101-foot strand with 31 S14 LED bulbs three feet apart, plus two spare bulbs. That is enough to zigzag over a long patio table or run around three sides of a deck from a single outlet, with fewer plugs and connections out in the weather.

The listing gives a clear weather rating, IP65, for year-round use in rain, snow and humidity. The bulb shells are hard plastic over PET, so there is no glass to break, and Minetom states the strand is UL listed and made with flame-retardant, anti-aging wire. Each socket has two built-in hooks, spare fuses are included, it works with most standard dimmers, and up to 22 strands connect end to end. Minetom rates the bulbs for up to 30,000 hours.

The weak point is the warranty: the listing gives 30 days. Minetom promises responsive support, but that is not the same as a written warranty.

Why we like it

  • 101 ft from one plug
  • IP65 rating stated
  • UL listed, per the listing
  • Spare bulbs and fuses included

Key specifications

Model SXO7-31-(0.6)T-A20
Length & bulbs 101 ft, 31 bulbs + 2 spares, 3 ft apart
Bulb type S14 LED, shatterproof plastic
Power Plug-in; up to 22 strands linked
Weather rating IP65
Safety listing UL listed (listing)
Dimmable/smart Works with most standard dimmers; not smart
Warranty 30 days

Why we recommend it

It suits a long table, a big deck or a fence line, where one strand from one outlet is simpler and tidier than several joined together.

Skip it if a long warranty matters to you. Thirty days is the shortest term on this page.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Longest strand here
  • Stated IP65
  • Spares included

Cons

  • 30-day warranty
  • Long strand is harder to hang alone

5. Govee S14 Outdoor String Lights 2, 48 ft – Warm White or Any Color From an App

Best smart lightsGovee S14 Bulb Outdoor String Lights 2

Govee’s strand looks like a regular set of S14 bulbs, but each one can show warm white or any of 16 million colors, and each bulb can show a different color at once. For a family party that means warm white for dinner, then the colors of the Mexican flag for a game or a birthday, then something slow and dim for late conversation. Govee lists 111 scene modes, a built-in microphone that pulses the lights with music, and a DIY mode in its app.

The strand is 48 feet with 15 LED bulbs, each giving 65 lumens of dimmable warm white, according to Govee. The lights are rated IP66 and for temperatures from -4°F to 104°F, with an LED life of up to 25,000 hours. One detail matters for safety: Govee says the power adapter should be placed indoors or plugged into a socket with an IP65 protective enclosure. Control is through the Govee Home app, Alexa, Google Home or Matter, with timers.

Govee states this strand does not support extension or splicing, so buy the length you need; it is sold in 96- and 144-foot versions as well. The warranty is 12 months.

Why we like it

  • Warm white plus 16 million colors
  • IP66 rating on the lights
  • App, voice and Matter control with timers
  • Music sync and 111 scenes

Key specifications

Model H702A
Length & bulbs 48 ft, 15 bulbs
Bulb type S14 LED, RGBICWW; shatterproof not stated
Power Plug-in adapter (indoors or IP65 enclosure); no extension
Weather rating IP66 (lights); -4°F to 104°F
Safety listing Not stated
Dimmable/smart Dimmable; app, Alexa, Google, Matter
Warranty 12 months

Why we recommend it

It suits families who use the patio for parties as much as dinners, and anyone who wants the lights on a schedule or controlled by voice.

Skip it if your outlet is outside with no weatherproof cover. Govee wants the adapter indoors or in an IP65 enclosure.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Most lighting options here
  • Strong stated water rating
  • Scheduling built in

Cons

  • Cannot be extended
  • Adapter needs shelter

6. Brightech Ambience Pro Solar String Lights, 48 ft – No Outlet Needed

Best solarBrightech Ambience Pro Solar Powered Outdoor String Lights

Not every good spot for lights has an outlet nearby: the far end of the yard, a tree over the picnic table, a fence by the grill. Brightech’s solar Ambience Pro puts the same Edison-style look on a strand powered by a detachable solar panel, which you set on the included stake or clip where it gets sun. The panel switches the lights on at dusk and off at dawn, with an on/off switch on the back.

The strand is 48 feet with 15 LED bulbs, three feet apart, and three feet from the panel to the first bulb, so the lit part is 42 feet. The bulbs are shatterproof plastic, heat resistant to 122°F, and use 1 watt each, in 3000K soft white. Brightech says they last five to six hours on a full charge, which takes about six hours of direct sun, and that indirect light gives some use but less.

Brightech rates the LEDs for 20,000 hours and the panel for 1,000 charges, roughly two and a half years, and gives a two-year limited warranty on solar purchases from Brightech USA. The cord has the same WeatherTite build as the plug-in version, rated for 50 mph winds, rain and snow; no IP rating is given.

Why we like it

  • Solar panel with dusk-to-dawn control
  • Shatterproof bulbs
  • Clear runtime: 5 to 6 hours
  • Two-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model SLR-48NH-SW
Length & bulbs 48 ft (42 ft lit), 15 bulbs
Bulb type 1 W LED, shatterproof plastic, 3000K
Power Solar; 5–6 h per full charge
Weather rating No IP rating; wind to 50 mph, rain and snow (Brightech)
Safety listing Not stated
Dimmable/smart No; auto on at dusk
Warranty 2-year limited

Why we recommend it

It suits a spot far from an outlet with a sunny place for the panel, and renters who would rather not run an extension cord across the yard.

Skip it if your parties run late. Five to six hours from dusk ends around midnight, and less after a cloudy day.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No wiring or outlet
  • Switches itself on
  • Stated panel lifespan

Cons

  • Dimmer than plug-in strands
  • Runtime depends on sun

7. addlon Solar String Lights, 54 ft – Solar With a USB Backup and Remote

Best solar with remoteaddlon 54FT(48+6) Solar String Lights Outdoor

The weakness of any solar strand is a run of cloudy days. addlon’s answer is a second way to charge: the panel also charges over USB, which addlon says takes four hours, against about eight hours of sun for a full solar charge. For a party planned after a rainy week, you can unhook the panel and charge it indoors the day before.

The strand is 54 feet, 48 of them lit, with 16 sockets and a spare bulb, in 2700K warm white. A remote gives three brightness levels, three modes (steady, breathing and flashing) and a timer of two, four, six or eight hours, and the strand remembers your last setting. addlon says it can run for 20-plus hours on a full charge, and recommends the soft setting when you want it to last. The listing title gives an IP65 rating.

The warranty is one year. The listing does not say what the bulbs are made of, and the 20-hour figure will depend on the brightness you choose.

Why we like it

  • Solar plus USB charging
  • Remote with brightness, modes and timer
  • IP65 rating in the listing
  • Spare bulb included

Key specifications

Model Solar String Lights, 54 ft (48+6)
Length & bulbs 54 ft (48 ft lit), 16 sockets + 1 spare
Bulb type LED, 2700K; material not stated
Power Solar (about 8 h) or USB (4 h); up to 20+ h runtime
Weather rating IP65
Safety listing Not stated
Dimmable/smart 3 brightness levels and timer by remote; not app
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

It suits a solar setup in a shady or cloudy spot, where a USB top-up keeps the lights reliable for a planned event.

Skip it if you want the vintage Edison look. These are smaller bulbs on a lighter strand than Brightech’s.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Two ways to charge
  • Timer on the remote
  • Stated IP65

Cons

  • Runtime claim depends on setting
  • Bulb material not stated

8. Feit Electric Flame Effect LED String Lights, 12 ft – Flickering Lantern Glow

Best accent strandFeit Electric LED String Lights - Flame Effect

Feit Electric’s flame-effect set is not for lighting a whole patio. It is a short strand, 12 feet with six sockets, whose bulbs flicker like a lantern, which Feit pitches for patios, gardens and seasonal displays. Draped over a doorway, a serving table or the front of a nacimiento for a posada, it gives a candlelit look without an open flame anywhere near paper decorations.

The color is 1800K, warmer and more orange than any other strand here, and the six bulbs use 2 watts in total. Seven bulbs come in the box, one of them a spare. The bulbs are shatter-resistant plastic and rated for 15,000 hours, and up to 36 sets link together if you want a longer run.

Feit says the set is UL certified and suitable for damp locations, and it plugs into a standard 120-volt outlet. Feit gives a damp-location rating rather than a wet-location or IP rating, so hang it under an overhang or porch roof rather than in open rain. The warranty is two years.

Why we like it

  • Flame-effect bulbs, 1800K
  • UL certified, per Feit
  • Spare bulb included
  • Two-year warranty

Key specifications

Model SL12-6/FLAME
Length & bulbs 12 ft, 6 sockets, 7 bulbs included
Bulb type LED flame effect, shatter-resistant plastic
Power Plug-in, 120 V; up to 36 sets linked
Weather rating Damp locations
Safety listing UL certified (Feit)
Dimmable/smart Not stated; not smart
Warranty 2 years

Why we recommend it

It suits a covered porch, an entryway or a party table where you want a few points of warm, moving light rather than a canopy of bulbs.

Skip it if the lights will hang in open weather. Feit rates the set for damp locations, not wet ones.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Candle-like effect
  • Stated UL certification
  • Links to longer runs

Cons

  • Only 12 ft per set
  • Damp rating only

How to choose string lights for a backyard party

String lights are simple, but the wrong length, a dead strand after one storm or a cord across the lawn will spoil them. These five points decide it.

1. Measure the run, then add slack

Measure the path from the outlet along every post, hook or tree, and add a few feet for each sag between supports. A standard 48-foot strand covers one side of a small patio; a long table or deck needs two strands, or a single long one such as Minetom’s 101 feet. Check how many strands the maker lets you link: Brightech allows 20, addlon 28, Minetom 22, while Govee’s smart strand cannot be extended at all.

2. Bulb type and color

Every pick here uses LED bulbs, which run cool and draw little power. Shatterproof plastic or acrylic bulbs are worth having over a table or where children play; Enbrighten, addlon, Minetom and both solar strands say so. Color temperature sets the mood: 2500K to 2700K is the warm patio glow, 3000K is a little whiter, and Feit’s 1800K flame bulbs are close to candlelight.

An outdoor patio with tables and chairs under string lights strung between buildings at dusk
A patio with tables under string lights at dusk.

3. Plug-in or solar

Plug-in strands are brighter, stay on as long as you like and suit permanent installation. Solar strands need no outlet but depend on the sun: Brightech gives five to six hours from a full day of direct sun. addlon’s USB backup helps after cloudy weather. If the party runs past midnight, plug in.

4. Weather rating and a safety listing

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises using only lights tested for safety by a nationally recognized testing laboratory, such as UL or ETL, checking labels to be sure lights are certified for outdoor use, and plugging outdoor lights into a ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) protected outlet or a portable GFCI. It also says to check every set, new or old, for cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires and loose connections, and to throw damaged sets away, and to make sure any extension cord is rated for the intended use. On the makers’ side, Enbrighten and addlon state ETL listing, Minetom and Feit state UL listing, and Brightech says its core is UL listed. For water, an IP rating is the clearest claim: Minetom and addlon’s solar strand give IP65, Govee IP66 for the lights. “Weatherproof” without a rating tells you less.

5. Dimming and control

Plug-in Edison strands from Brightech, addlon and Minetom work with a dimmer that you buy separately. Govee builds dimming, color, timers and voice control into its app. The addlon solar strand puts brightness and a timer on a remote. A timer is worth having either way, so the lights are not left on all night.

How we picked these eight strands

We started from what a restaurant patio needs: warm, even light over the tables, strands that survive a season of wind and rain, and nothing fragile over people eating. We kept to brands with their own Amazon listings that were in stock when we checked, skipped unbranded listings, and chose a mix of plug-in, smart and solar strands, short and long. Sunforce, which we looked for, had only solar security lights in stock, not string lights. Every bulb, power, weather, safety-listing and warranty figure comes from the maker’s own Amazon listing; where it gives nothing, we wrote “Not stated”. General safety guidance comes from the CPSC. We also searched the CPSC recall database for each brand and for string lights; none of these strands appears in it, and the most recent string-light recall we found covers a different maker’s mini lights. We have not used these lights for this guide, and no outside reviews were relied on.

String light questions, answered

What are the best durable outdoor string lights?

Look for a heavy cord, shatterproof bulbs, a stated water rating and a safety listing. Minetom’s strand states IP65 and UL listing; Brightech’s states wind and weather limits and a UL-listed core; Enbrighten’s is ETL certified for permanent installation with a lifetime warranty.

Can outdoor string lights stay up all year?

Some are made for it. Enbrighten states its strand is ETL certified for permanent indoor and outdoor installation, and Brightech says its Ambience Pro can stay on display year round. Check every strand for damage each season, as the CPSC advises.

Are solar string lights as bright as plug-in lights?

Usually not. Brightech’s solar bulbs are 1 watt each against 2 watts for its plug-in strand, and run five to six hours on a full charge. Solar suits a spot without an outlet; plug-in suits the main patio.

Do I need a GFCI outlet for string lights?

The CPSC advises plugging outdoor lights only into a GFCI-protected receptacle or a portable GFCI. If your outdoor outlet is not GFCI protected, a portable GFCI plugs in between.

How far apart should the bulbs be?

Most strands here space bulbs about three feet apart. Enbrighten’s 24 bulbs on 48 feet are closer, about two feet, for a denser line of light.

Our final pick for lighting the patio

Start with the Brightech Ambience Pro for a warm, sturdy strand that can stay up, choose Enbrighten’s Classic for a denser line of shatterproof café lights, and use Brightech’s solar version where there is no outlet. Then set the scene: a beverage cooler for the aguas frescas and beer, serving trays for the tacos, and a piñata for the kids. Grilling after dark too? See the best charcoal grill.
