Cast iron burns more hands through its handle than through its cooking surface. The handle is solid iron, cast in one piece with the pan, so it heats up on the stove and stays hot long after the burner is off. Anyone who has grabbed a skillet handle out of habit knows the feeling. A regular oven mitt helps, but the thing cast iron cooks reach for most is simpler: a sleeve that slides over the handle itself.
This guide sits under our cast iron skillet guide and looks at one problem: protecting your hand on hot cast iron handles. It covers silicone, fabric and leather handle holders from Lodge, Le Creuset, Lancaster Cast Iron and Hardmill, with the heat ratings each maker states. For general-purpose mitts, see our separate oven mitt guide.

Quick verdict: what to buy for hot cast iron handles
For most cast iron skillets of 9 inches and up, the best pick is the Lodge Silicone Hot Handle Holder: it is made for Lodge’s keyhole handles, Lodge rates it to 500°F, and it goes in the dishwasher. If you would rather have fabric that also handles steam, choose the Lodge Max Temp Handle Mitt, rated to 450°F. For enameled cast iron, or a sleeve that can stay on in the oven, the Le Creuset Silicone Cool Tool Handle is the one whose maker says it is oven safe.
The rest of this page explains which holder fits which handle, and why most of them must come off before the pan goes in the oven.

Our picks for the best oven mitts for cast iron
Most of these are handle holders rather than mitts: sleeves that slide over the skillet’s handle and stay there while you cook. They are faster than reaching for a mitt and they put insulation exactly where your hand goes. We have included silicone for easy washing, fabric for comfort and leather for a snug fit on older pans, and each pick says which handles it is made for. None of them repeats a pick from our live oven mitt, high-heat mitt or silicone mitt guides.
1. Lodge Silicone Hot Handle Holder, 9-inch and Larger Skillets – Made for Lodge Handles

Lodge is a family-owned cast iron maker founded in 1896, and this red silicone sleeve is the accessory you see on the handle of countless Lodge skillets. It is built for Lodge skillets of 9 inches and larger, measures about 5.6 by 2 inches, and Lodge says it fits snugly for a secure grip when you move a heavy pan.
Lodge rates it for heat up to 500°F and describes the grip as flexible and non-slip. It goes in the dishwasher, which matters for something that sits next to frying oil and splattering salsa all day. Because it slides off easily, you can keep it on the skillet you use most and move it to another when you need to.
It is a stovetop tool. Lodge’s other silicone and fabric holders carry a note to keep them out of the oven and away from direct flame, so slip this one off before the skillet goes in to finish a steak or bake cornbread, and use a mitt for the oven trip.
Why we like it
- Made by Lodge for Lodge skillets 9 inches and larger.
- Heat resistance up to 500°F, per Lodge.
- Dishwasher safe.
- Non-slip grip for moving heavy pans (listing).

- Dishwasher safe
- Snug fit on Lodge skillets
Cons
- Must come off for the oven
- Made for Lodge handle shapes
2. Lodge Max Temp Handle Mitt – Fabric With a Steam Barrier

Silicone grips well but some cooks find it stiff and slippery when wet. Lodge’s Max Temp Handle Mitt is a fabric sleeve instead: a heavy-duty outer fabric over thick batting, with what Lodge calls a steam barrier. Lodge says it protects hands from heat up to 450°F.
The steam barrier is the useful part for cast iron cooks who braise. When a skillet of chile colorado or a pan of beans is simmering, steam rises around the handle, and steam soaks through ordinary cotton faster than dry heat does. A barrier layer is meant to slow that down.
It is designed for Lodge’s traditional teardrop handles and goes in the washing machine. Lodge lists a one-year warranty. As with Lodge’s other holders, treat it as a stovetop tool and keep it away from the burner flame.
Why we like it
- Protects hands from heat up to 450°F, per Lodge.
- Steam barrier inside heavy-duty batting.
- Machine washable.

3. Hardmill Leather Cast Iron Handle Cover, Standard 4.5-inch – Slides On and Off Easily

Leather is the traditional cast iron handle cover: it insulates, softens to your hand over time, and looks at home on a well-used skillet. Hardmill makes this one from two layers of 4-ounce oil-tanned full-grain leather, stitched with Kevlar thread so the seams stay intact if a flame touches them.
The design is patented, and its point is easy removal. Hardmill notes that some leather covers shrink and become hard to pull off, which is a problem when you want to move a skillet into the oven. This one is made to slide on and off as you switch between pans.
The standard size is 4.5 by 2 inches and fits classic teardrop handles on pans from No. 3 to No. 12, which Hardmill puts at about 6 to 11.75 inches rim to rim. A long 5.75-inch version is sold for curved or ergonomic handles. Hardmill does not state a temperature rating.
Why we like it
- Double-layer full-grain leather.
- Kevlar thread holds if a flame touches it (Hardmill).
- Patented shape slides off for the oven.
- Stated fit: No. 3 to No. 12 skillets.

- Easy on and off
- Wide stated size range
Cons
- No heat rating given
- Leather cannot be machine washed
4. Le Creuset Silicone Cool Tool Handle, 5.75-inch – Can Stay On in the Oven

Le Creuset makes enameled cast iron skillets, and their handles get just as hot as bare iron. This 5.75-inch silicone sleeve is designed, in Le Creuset’s words, to give “a secure fit on Le Creuset enameled cast iron cookware”, and it also fits standard metal cookware handles.
What sets it apart from the Lodge holders is the care note. Le Creuset says it is safe in the oven, microwave and freezer, and in the dishwasher. That means you can sear on the stove and move the skillet into the oven without stopping to pull the sleeve off. Le Creuset does not give a temperature figure, so keep oven temperatures sensible and still use a mitt to lift a pan out of a very hot oven.
The textured exterior is meant to improve grip. At 5.75 inches, it is a little longer than Lodge’s standard holder, which suits the longer handles on many enameled skillets.
Why we like it
- Le Creuset says it is oven, microwave and freezer safe.
- Designed for Le Creuset enameled cast iron; fits standard handles too.
- Dishwasher safe.
- Textured exterior for grip.

Pros
- Oven safe, per maker
- Fits enameled and standard handles
- Dishwasher safe
Cons
- No temperature figure
- Fit on Lodge keyhole handles not stated

5. Lodge Silicone Assist Handle Holder – Covers the Helper Handle

A 12-inch cast iron skillet full of food is heavy enough that most people lift it with two hands: one on the main handle, one on the small loop on the opposite side. That loop, the assist handle, gets just as hot, and an ordinary handle sleeve will not fit it. Lodge makes this silicone cap for exactly that spot.
Lodge says it is designed for its dual-handle cast iron, such as the 10.25-inch skillet and deep skillet, and rates it for heat up to 450°F. It goes in the dishwasher. Lodge is clear about two limits: it is not compatible with Lodge’s enameled cast iron, and it should be kept out of the oven and away from direct flame.
Pair it with the main-handle holder above and you can lift a full skillet with both hands covered.
Why we like it
- Fits the small assist handle that main-handle sleeves miss.
- Heat protection up to 450°F, per Lodge.
- Dishwasher safe.
Key specifications
| Model | ASAHH41 |
|---|---|
| Type | Assist-handle cap |

Pros and cons
Pros
- Covers the second handle
- 450°F rating
- Dishwasher safe
Cons
- Not for the oven
- Not for enameled pans
6. Lancaster Cast Iron Leather Handle Cover – Made in Pennsylvania

Lancaster Cast Iron makes lightweight skillets in the USA, and it sells this leather handle cover alongside them. The listing says it is handmade in Lancaster County from American leather and is made to fit almost any cast iron handle, including vintage skillets, Lodge, Lancaster and Field Company pans.
It is extra thick, and the listing rates it for temperatures up to 450 degrees. Like most leather covers, it starts out tight and conforms to the shape of your handle over time, and the light brown leather darkens as it absorbs oil. The listed size is 5.5 by 3 inches.
That snug fit is a trade-off. A cover that molds to one handle can be slow to pull off, so if you move pans in and out of the oven often, the Hardmill cover above, which is designed to slide off, may suit you better.
Why we like it
- Handmade in Pennsylvania from American leather (listing).
- Rated for temperatures up to 450 degrees.
- Stated fit includes vintage, Lodge, Lancaster and Field skillets.
Key specifications
| Model | Not stated |
|---|---|
| Type | Main-handle sleeve |

| Heat rating (as stated) | Up to 450 degrees |
| Fits | Most cast iron handles, including vintage |
| Oven use | Not stated |
| Cleaning | Not stated |
| Size | 5.5 x 3 inches |
Why we recommend it
It suits owners of vintage or lightweight cast iron who want a cover made by a cast iron maker.
Skip it if you want to wash your handle cover; the listing gives no cleaning instructions.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Made in the USA
- 450-degree stated rating
- Broad stated fit
Cons
- Tight at first
- No care instructions listed
7. Le Creuset Handle Holder, 7-inch – Cotton Outside, Silicone Grip Inside

Le Creuset’s newer handle holder combines the two materials: an outer shell of 100 percent cotton for comfort, and a silicone interior that grips the handle so the holder does not slide around. Le Creuset rates it heat resistant to 550°F, the highest figure among the picks on this page.
At 7 inches it is the longest holder here, which gives more coverage on long skillet handles. Le Creuset says it fits handled cookware generally, rather than naming specific pans. The fabric is certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, a textile certification for tested substances.
Care is more fussy than silicone: hand wash cold or wipe clean, and lay flat to dry. The listing does not say whether it can stay on in the oven.
Why we like it
- Heat resistant to 550°F, per Le Creuset.
- Silicone interior grips the handle.
- 7-inch length covers long handles.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified cotton.
Key specifications
| Model | 45039018142005 |
|---|---|
| Type | Main-handle sleeve |

| Fits | Handled cookware |
| Oven use | Not stated |
| Cleaning | Hand wash cold or wipe clean |
| Size | 7 inches |
Why we recommend it
It suits cooks with long-handled skillets who like the feel of fabric but want silicone grip.
Skip it if you want something you can throw in the dishwasher or washing machine.
Pros and cons
Pros
- 550°F stated rating
- Long coverage
- Grippy lining
Cons
- Hand wash only
- Oven use not stated
8. Lodge Silicone Mini Hot Handle Holder – For 8-inch and Smaller Skillets

Small cast iron pans have small handles, and a standard sleeve slides around on them. Lodge’s Mini holder is made for its skillets of 8 inches or smaller with keyhole handles, such as the 6.5-inch skillet and grill pan, the 5-inch mini skillet and the 5.5-inch Wonder Skillet.
Small skillets heat up fast, and their short handles put your fingers close to the pan, so a sleeve earns its place here as much as on a big skillet. Lodge rates this one for heat up to 500°F, and it is dishwasher safe. Like Lodge’s other holders, it is not intended for the oven or direct flame.
If you fry eggs or toast a single tortilla in a little skillet every morning, this is the holder that will actually fit it.
Why we like it
- Sized for Lodge skillets 8 inches and smaller.
- Heat protection up to 500°F, per Lodge.
- Dishwasher safe.
Key specifications
| Model | ASHHM41 |
|---|---|
| Type | Main-handle sleeve, mini |
| Material | Silicone |
| Heat rating (as stated) | Up to 500°F |
| Fits | Lodge keyhole-handle skillets 8 inches or smaller |
| Oven use | No, per Lodge |
| Cleaning | Dishwasher safe |
| Size | 3 inches |
Why we recommend it
It suits anyone with a small Lodge skillet for eggs, sauces or single servings.
Skip it if your small pan is from another maker; Lodge designed it for its own keyhole handles.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Fits small handles
- 500°F rating
- Dishwasher safe
Cons
- Not for the oven
- Lodge keyhole handles only
Why cast iron handles need their own protection
On a traditional cast iron skillet, the handle is cast in one piece with the skillet, so heat flows straight into it. After a few minutes on a burner the handle of a cast iron skillet is too hot to hold, and it stays hot for a long time after you turn the heat off, because cast iron holds heat.
That is why many cast iron cooks keep a sleeve on the handle rather than reaching for a mitt each time. A sleeve is always where your hand goes, it does not need to be found on the counter, and it leaves your fingers free for a spatula or spoon. The catch is the oven. Lodge tells you to keep its silicone and fabric holders out of the oven, and a holder left on a handle in a 450°F oven is not something we would rely on. For the trip in and out of the oven, a proper mitt is still the right tool; our guides to high-heat oven mitts and silicone oven mitts cover those.

How to choose a handle holder for cast iron
Fit to your handle
Handle holders are made for particular shapes. Lodge’s are sized for Lodge’s teardrop and keyhole handles, in separate versions for 9-inch-and-up skillets, 8-inch-and-smaller skillets and assist handles. Leather covers from Hardmill and Lancaster list wider fits. Measure your handle if it is long or curved.
Stated heat rating
Ratings among our picks range from 450°F to 550°F, as stated by each maker, and some makers give none. A rating tells you what the material withstands, not that it keeps your hand cool indefinitely. Hold a hot pan briefly and set it down.
Oven or stovetop
Most holders are stovetop tools. Of our picks, only Le Creuset’s Cool Tool Handle is described by its maker as oven safe. For everything else, take the sleeve off before the pan goes in, and lift the hot pan out with a mitt.
Material and cleaning
Silicone rinses clean and goes in the dishwasher. Fabric is comfortable to hold but soaks up grease and needs washing. Leather molds to the handle and ages well, but it cannot be washed like the others.
Main handle and helper handle
If you lift a full 12-inch skillet or a cast iron Dutch oven with two hands, cover both handles. Lodge’s assist holder does the second one.
How we chose these eight handle holders
We started from the problem of hot cast iron handles and searched Amazon for handle holders and sleeves from cookware makers and identifiable leather makers. For each one we checked stock, model, material, stated heat rating, fit and care through Amazon’s product data, and kept only items listed in stock. Heat ratings are given only where the maker or listing states them; we have not added any of our own.
We left out every product already recommended on our oven mitt, high-heat mitt, silicone mitt and pot holder guides, including Lodge’s 2-in-1 trivet and pot holder. We also left out the many unbranded multi-packs of silicone sleeves, and looked for handle covers from Smithey and Field Company, neither of which had one listed in stock on Amazon at the time of writing. We have not used these holders for this guide; the details come from the makers and their listings.

Cast iron handle questions, answered
Can I leave a silicone handle holder on in the oven?
Not a Lodge one. Lodge says to keep its handle holders out of the oven and away from direct flame. Le Creuset says its Cool Tool Handle is oven safe, but gives no maximum temperature, so use judgment with very hot ovens.
Do I still need oven mitts if I have a handle holder?
Yes, for anything going in or out of the oven, and for grabbing the pan by its body or lid. A handle holder covers one handle on the stovetop; a mitt covers your whole hand.
Will a Lodge handle holder fit other brands?
Lodge designs its holders for Lodge handles. They may fit similar teardrop handles on other pans, but Lodge does not promise it. For other brands, a leather cover with a stated size range, such as the Hardmill, is a safer bet.
Are leather handle covers safe near the stove?
Leather does not melt like plastic, and Hardmill stitches its covers with Kevlar thread so the seams hold if a flame touches them. Still keep any cover away from an open burner flame.
What about enameled cast iron?
Le Creuset’s Cool Tool Handle is designed for its enameled cast iron. Lodge says its assist holder is not compatible with Lodge’s enameled pieces.
Our final word on cast iron handle protection
For a Lodge skillet of 10 or 12 inches, start with the Lodge Silicone Hot Handle Holder and add the assist holder if you lift with two hands. For enameled iron or pans that go in the oven, choose Le Creuset’s Cool Tool Handle, and for vintage or mixed-brand pans, a leather cover from Hardmill or Lancaster. If you are still choosing the pan itself, see our guide to the best cast iron skillet, and for somewhere to set it down, our cast iron trivet guide.
