Grip, Liner and Steam: How to Pick the Best Silicone Oven Mitts

The best silicone oven mitts for steam, boil-overs and hot pans: full mitts, minis and five-finger gloves, with each maker's stated rating and care.

Steam rising from a dark pot beside a metal kettle on a stovetop
Steam rising from a pot on the stove.

Silicone changed oven mitts for one simple reason: it does not soak up water. A cotton mitt that brushes against a boiling pot of frijoles or a steaming tamalera wicks the moisture in, and wet cloth carries heat to the hand fast. A silicone shell sheds that water and grease, wipes clean, and grips a hot handle without slipping. That makes it the material a lot of kitchens prefer for stove and oven work that involves steam.

Not every silicone mitt is the same, though. Some are solid silicone with a quilted cotton liner, some are fabric with a silicone shell on the outside, some are minis for lids and handles, and some are five-finger gloves. This guide narrows our main oven mitt guide to silicone only and compares grip, steam protection, linings and stated heat ratings.

Quick verdict: which silicone mitt to buy

For most kitchens, the pick is still the OXO Good Grips Silicone Oven Mitt: America’s Test Kitchen named it the winner of its oven mitt review, it is 13 inches long, and it goes in the washing machine. If you want a matched pair with a ribbed grip, choose the Cuisinart Silicone Oven Mitts; for a thick quilted liner and a 500°F rating, the Homwe 13.7-inch mitts; for five fingers, the LANON liquid silicone gloves; and for lids and handles, the KitchenAid Evergreen mini mitts.

Below, five standouts side by side, then all seven reviewed in full.

Our picks for the best silicone oven mitts

One of these, the OXO, is also the top pick in our main oven mitt guide; the reason it appears again is below. The other six are not in that guide. Each section gives the construction, the lining, the length, the heat figure exactly as stated, how it cleans, and one honest reason to skip it.

1. OXO Good Grips Silicone Oven Mitt – The Silicone Benchmark

Best overallOXO Good Grips Silicone Oven Mitt - Jam

We repeat this one from our main oven mitt guide on purpose. A guide to silicone mitts that left out the mitt America’s Test Kitchen named its winner would be steering you away from the best-supported choice, so it stays at the top here too. This is the Jam (deep red) version of the same mitt; the black one was out of stock when we rechecked.

OXO’s mitt is a silicone body with a non-slip pattern for grip and dexterity, tapered for a secure fit, and 13 inches (33 cm) long so it protects the wrist and the start of the arm. OXO describes the silicone as water-resistant and easy to clean, and the listing title calls it machine washable. Inside is a soft fabric lining. OXO gives no temperature figure; it calls the mitt heat-resistant.

In ATK’s review of oven mitts and pot holders, testers held a preheated skillet for about 22 seconds in this mitt, the longest of the group, and said it kept their hands “comfortably cool and in control” while still letting them grip a thin sheet pan. ATK also notes two things to know: it should be laid flat to dry, and its light-colored silicone stained permanently, which is one reason to pick a dark color such as this one. It is sold as a single mitt.

Why we like it

  • America’s Test Kitchen’s winning oven mitt
  • Non-slip pattern for grip and dexterity
  • 13-inch tapered length protects the wrist
  • Water-resistant silicone; machine washable

Key specifications

Model 11318200
Style Mitt
Material Silicone body
Lining Soft fabric interior
Length 13 in (33 cm)
Heat rating (as stated) Not stated as a temperature; described as heat-resistant
Care Machine washable (lay flat to dry, per ATK)
Sold as Single mitt

Why we recommend it

It suits almost every home cook, from sheet pans of conchas to a lidded pot of beans. The silicone does not soak up steam or grease, and it is still thin enough to pinch the rim of a baking sheet.

Skip it if you want a printed temperature figure or a pair in one box. OXO gives neither on this listing.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Best heat hold in ATK’s review
  • Good grip on thin pans
  • Machine washable

Cons

  • No temperature stated
  • Sold singly
  • Must dry flat

2. Cuisinart Silicone Oven Mitts, 2-Pack – Ribbed Grip, Cotton Cuff

Best ribbed pairCuisinart Silicone Oven Mitts

Cuisinart’s silicone mitts come as a pair, which is what a heavy two-handled pot or a full roasting pan needs. The listing is sold under the Cuisinart name by Best Brands. Each mitt is 7.5 by 13 inches, with a waterproof ribbed silicone exterior, a soft interior and a 100% cotton cuff, and the listing rates them for heat up to 500°F.

The ribbed silicone is the point. Cuisinart says it supports a controlled hold on bakeware, roasting pans, lids and handles, and that the silicone helps resist steam, splatters and grease. At 13 inches, the listing says they cover hands, wrists and lower forearms. The mitts are ambidextrous, so either fits either hand, and each has a hanging loop.

Care is rinse or wipe, with hand washing as needed; they are not listed as machine washable. That suits the silicone outside, but the cotton cuff will need a proper wash now and then. For a kitchen that steams tamales or lifts big pots of pozole, a waterproof pair is the practical buy.

Why we like it

  • Sold as a pair
  • Waterproof ribbed silicone grip
  • Rated to 500°F by the listing
  • 13-inch length with a cotton cuff

Key specifications

Model AMZ-OM102-CU-BLK
Style Mitt, ambidextrous
Material Ribbed silicone exterior, 100% cotton cuff
Lining Soft interior (fabric not specified)
Length 13 in (7.5 x 13 in)
Heat rating (as stated) Up to 500°F
Care Rinse or wipe; hand wash as needed
Sold as Pair

Why we recommend it

It suits cooks who want a matched pair of waterproof mitts for steam, boil-overs and heavy pans, from a familiar kitchen brand.

Skip it if you want to throw your mitts in the washing machine. The listing gives hand washing, not machine washing.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Pair in one box
  • Ribbed, waterproof grip
  • Stated 500°F rating

Cons

  • Not machine washable
  • Licensed product, newer listing
  • Lining fabric not stated

3. Homwe 13.7-Inch Silicone Oven Mitts – Thick Quilted Liner, 500°F

Best quilted linerBPA-Free Silicone Oven Mitts Ultra Heat Resistant up to 500°F - Oven Mitts with Thick Cotton Liner - Long Slip Resistant Pot Holders

Homwe’s 13.7-inch mitts are the shorter sibling of the 14.7-inch Homwe pair in our main guide, and they are a different listing with a different rating: the maker rates this size to 500°F, against 450°F for the longer one. If you do not need the extra inch, this is the higher-rated choice.

The shell is BPA-free silicone with a non-slip texture, and the inside is a soft, quilted cotton lining. Homwe describes the silicone as completely waterproof and steam-resistant, which is the whole case for silicone: spills, boiling liquid and oven steam stay outside. At 13.7 inches, the listing says they cover from the fingertips to well past the wrist. They come as a pair.

America’s Test Kitchen reviewed Homwe’s silicone mitts and rated them recommended, describing them as thin, flexible and relatively nimble, though testers’ hands warmed faster with heavy items and the lining bunched; ATK’s review lists the longer size, so treat that as a guide to the design rather than this exact length. Homwe also suggests using them as trivets or hot pads.

Why we like it

  • Rated to 500°F by Homwe
  • Waterproof, steam-resistant silicone shell
  • Soft quilted cotton lining
  • Pair; covers past the wrist

Key specifications

Model PSOM-MIYL-ZFSB
Style Mitt
Material BPA-free silicone, non-slip texture
Lining Quilted cotton
Length 13.7 in
Heat rating (as stated) Up to 500°F
Care Not stated on this listing
Sold as Pair

Why we recommend it

Choose these if you want the comfort of a thick quilted liner inside a fully waterproof shell, and a stated 500°F rating, in a pair.

Skip it if you mostly carry heavy cast iron: ATK found Homwe’s design warmed up faster than the OXO with heavy items.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Waterproof and steam-resistant
  • Quilted lining
  • Higher rating than the 14.7-inch size

Cons

  • Lining can bunch, per ATK
  • Warmer with heavy pots
  • Care not stated on this listing

4. GIR Silicone Oven Mitts, Set of 2 – Terry Liner, Fabric Cuff

Best terry liningGIR: Get It Right Silicone Oven Mitts - Non-Slip & Heat Resistant Silicone Kitchen Mitts for Oven - Kitchen Pot Holder with Soft Terry Quilted Liner - Set of 2

GIR, short for Get It Right, makes silicone kitchen tools, and its oven mitts pair a 100% silicone outer with a soft terry cotton quilted liner. Each mitt is 13 by 7 inches, with fabric extensions at the cuff that GIR says add arm protection. They come as a set of two with a hanging loop.

GIR rates them to 425°F, which is lower than most mitts here. That is not a flaw so much as an honest number: it covers baking, roasting and stovetop work comfortably, but these are not the mitts for a broiler pan at the top of the dial or a pizza oven. For anything hotter, a commercial or leather mitt is the better tool.

Care is easy: GIR says you can put them in the wash or give them a quick rinse. The terry lining is softer than a thin fabric interior, and the silicone and fabric blend is meant to keep them flexible.

Why we like it

  • 100% silicone outer with terry quilted liner
  • Fabric cuff extension for the arm
  • Set of two
  • Washable or rinse clean

Key specifications

Model GIROM119SLT
Style Mitt
Material 100% silicone outer, fabric cuff
Lining Soft terry cotton, quilted
Length 13 in (13 x 7 in)
Heat rating (as stated) Up to 425°F
Care Wash or rinse
Sold as Set of 2

Why we recommend it

It suits bakers and everyday cooks who want a soft terry lining and a washable pair from a maker of silicone kitchen tools.

Skip it if you cook above 425°F often. That is the maker’s stated limit.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Soft terry liner
  • Washable
  • Pair with loops

Cons

  • Lowest stated rating here
  • Fabric cuff absorbs water

5. LANON 15-Inch Liquid Silicone Gloves – Five Fingers, Fully Waterproof

Best five-fingerLANON 15" Liquid Silicone Oven Mitts

LANON Protection makes safety gloves, and these are silicone gloves with fingers rather than mitts. They are molded from liquid silicone with an 18-gauge seamless liner LANON calls CoralAir, and the listing says they handle temperatures from -100°F to 480°F for an extended time. The surface is waterproof, stain-resistant and impervious to grease.

Five fingers change what you can do. You can pull apart a pork shoulder for carnitas, lift corn husks out of a steaming pot, hold a hot pan steady while you scrape it, or turn meat on the grill, all things a mitt makes clumsy. Because the silicone is fully waterproof, they also work for hot dishwater. At 15 inches, they cover the forearm.

LANON lists EN 407:2004, the European heat-protection standard, among several standards the gloves are certified to, but the listing does not give the contact-heat level. They are sized (this listing is a medium), so check the size chart, and wash them with mild detergent in hot water.

Why we like it

  • Five fingers for pulling meat and gripping
  • Waterproof and impervious to grease
  • Stated -100°F to 480°F range
  • 15-inch cuff covers the forearm

Key specifications

Model S600
Style Five-finger glove, sized
Material Liquid silicone
Lining CoralAir 18-gauge seamless liner
Length 15 in
Heat rating (as stated) -100°F to 480°F “for an extended time”; EN 407:2004 listed, level not stated
Care Wash with mild detergent in hot water
Sold as Gloves in sizes (M on this listing); pack count not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits cooks who handle hot, wet or greasy food with their hands, from shredding meat to lifting tamales, and want silicone’s waterproofing with real dexterity.

Skip it if you want one mitt for heavy pots. Gloves spread less insulation over the hand than a thick mitt, and the listing gives no EN 407 level.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Real finger movement
  • Fully waterproof
  • Long cuff

Cons

  • Must choose a size
  • EN 407 level not given
  • Less padding than a mitt

6. KitchenAid Evergreen Silicone Mini Mitts, 2-Pack – Small Grips, Thick Terry

Best miniKITCHENAID® Evergreen Design Series Herringbone Ribbed Soft Silicone Mini Oven Mitts 2-Pack Set

Mini mitts are for the small hot jobs: a lid knob, a skillet handle, an air fryer basket, a cazuela’s ear handles. KitchenAid’s Evergreen Design Series minis are molded ribbed silicone in a herringbone pattern, 5.5 by 9 inches, with a thick terrycloth lining and brown vegan-leather hanging loops. The listing rates them to 500°F.

These are not the full-size KitchenAid ribbed mitts in our main guide; they are a different, smaller set from a separate design series. KitchenAid describes the silicone as water resistant for protection from hot spills, with a textured, ribbed stripe for grip.

The trade-off with any mini is coverage: they protect the fingers and palm, not the wrist, so they are the wrong tool for reaching into an oven. Care is spot clean only: rinse with water and wipe.

Why we like it

  • Compact for lids and handles
  • Rated to 500°F by KitchenAid
  • Thick terrycloth lining
  • Ribbed, water-resistant silicone

Key specifications

Model M2023659TDKA A223
Style Mini mitt
Material Molded ribbed silicone
Lining Thick terrycloth
Length 9 in (5.5 x 9 in)
Heat rating (as stated) Up to 500°F
Care Spot clean only
Sold as Pair

Why we recommend it

It suits cooks who keep reaching for a towel to grab a lid or handle, and want something small that hangs by the stove.

Skip it if you need wrist protection at the oven. Minis do not cover it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Small and nimble
  • 500°F stated
  • Pair with loops

Cons

  • No wrist coverage
  • Spot clean only

7. Dexas Mini Silicone Oven Mitt – Raised Nibs, Dishwasher Safe

Best dishwasher-safeDexas Mini Silicone Oven Mitt with Raised Nibs

Dexas’s mini mitt is the simplest thing here: a small silicone mitt with raised nibs on the surface, which Dexas says add protection, and it can go in the dishwasher. It fits either hand and is meant for hot pots and pans.

The heat figure on the listing is inconsistent: the title says 450°F and a feature bullet says 500°F. We would plan around 450°F. The listing does not mention a fabric lining, so expect solid silicone against the hand, and the size is given only as “mini”. It is sold as a single mitt.

The dishwasher-safe body is the reason to buy it. A mini that has been in salsa, oil and masa can go in with the dishes, which no fabric-lined mitt in this guide allows.

Why we like it

  • Dishwasher safe
  • Raised nibs for grip
  • Fits either hand
  • Rated to at least 450°F by the listing

Key specifications

Model GMM3-1795
Style Mini mitt, ambidextrous
Material Silicone with raised nibs
Lining Not stated
Length Not stated (“mini”)
Heat rating (as stated) 450°F in the title; 500°F in the bullets
Care Dishwasher safe
Sold as Single mitt

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who wants a small grip that can be cleaned as hard as a spatula.

Skip it if you want a soft lining or wrist coverage. The listing mentions neither.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Dishwasher safe
  • Grippy nibs
  • Either hand

Cons

  • Heat rating stated two ways
  • No lining mentioned
  • Sold singly

How to choose a silicone oven mitt

Silicone solves the wet-heat problem, but the details still decide how well a mitt works. These are the five a working kitchen checks.

1. Solid silicone or silicone over fabric

A solid silicone body, like the OXO, Homwe, Cuisinart or GIR, keeps water and grease out everywhere it covers. A fabric mitt with silicone stripes or prints grips better than plain cloth but still soaks up liquid between the stripes. If steam and boil-overs are your main worry, choose solid silicone; a fabric cuff is fine, since it rarely meets the pot.

2. The liner matters as much as the shell

Silicone conducts heat; the liner is what slows it down. A quilted cotton liner (Homwe) or terry liner (GIR, KitchenAid) adds insulation and comfort. ATK found that thin, flexible silicone mitts give good dexterity but can warm up faster with heavy pans, and that some linings bunch inside. If you lift heavy cast iron, pick a mitt with a substantial liner and keep the liner dry.

A pizza on a peel beside a quilted oven mitt.

3. Grip pattern

Smooth silicone can be slippery when greasy. Raised diamonds (OXO), ribs (Cuisinart, KitchenAid) or nibs (Dexas) give the surface something to hold. The best patterns concentrate grip where your fingers and palm meet the pan.

4. Length and style for the job

Thirteen inches covers the wrist; 15 inches covers the forearm. Mini mitts cover only the hand, and five-finger gloves trade some insulation for dexterity. Many kitchens keep one pair of full mitts, one pair of minis and a pair of gloves. For grilling and fire, see our grill glove guide; silicone is not meant for open flame.

5. Heat rating and cleaning

Silicone mitts here are rated from 425°F to 500°F, and OXO gives no figure at all. A rating is a ceiling, not a time limit. For cleaning, check the listing: OXO and GIR wash in the machine, Dexas goes in the dishwasher, Cuisinart is hand wash, and KitchenAid’s minis are spot clean only.

How we chose these seven silicone mitts

We started from what a restaurant kitchen asks of a silicone mitt: a shell that keeps steam and liquid out, a liner that insulates, a grip that holds a greasy handle, enough length for the job, and care that keeps it clean. We looked for silicone and silicone-shell mitts and gloves sold on Amazon in the United States, in stock when we checked, from makers we could identify, and took every material, length, rating and care instruction from the maker’s listing. Where a maker gives no figure, we say so. We relied on America’s Test Kitchen’s review of oven mitts and pot holders for how the OXO and Homwe designs perform with a hot skillet. We have not used these mitts ourselves; where we describe performance, we say whose findings they are. We left out other picks from our main oven mitt guide (except the OXO, explained above), anonymous Amazon-only brands, and listings too thin to support a recommendation.

Silicone oven mitt questions, answered

What are the best silicone oven mitts?

For most cooks, the OXO Good Grips Silicone Oven Mitt, America’s Test Kitchen’s winner. For a pair, the Cuisinart or Homwe 13.7-inch mitts; for dexterity, the LANON silicone gloves.

Are silicone oven mitts better than cotton?

For wet heat, yes. Steam and liquid soak into cotton and carry heat to the hand; silicone sheds them. Cotton mitts can be comfortable and protective when thick and dry, but they lose that protection once wet or greasy.

Do silicone oven mitts get hot inside?

Eventually, yes. Silicone conducts heat, so the liner does much of the insulating, and heavy pans held for a long time will warm any mitt. In ATK’s review, the OXO kept hands comfortable for about 22 seconds on a hot skillet. Set heavy pans down quickly.

Can you wash silicone oven mitts?

It depends on the model. OXO and GIR list machine washing, Dexas is dishwasher safe, Cuisinart is hand wash, KitchenAid’s minis are spot clean only and LANON’s gloves wash in hot soapy water. Let lined mitts dry completely before use.

Can silicone oven mitts be used on the grill?

For lifting hot grates and pans, the makers say yes within their ratings, which top out around 480°F to 500°F here. They are not meant for direct flame, so for live fire, leather or flame-resistant fabric is safer.

The silicone pair we would hang by the stove

Buy the OXO Good Grips mitt, two of them, if you want the best-supported choice, or the Cuisinart pair if you want two in one box. Add KitchenAid’s minis for lids and handles, and the LANON gloves if you pull meat or handle wet food. For cloth and grill options, our main guide to the best oven mitts has the rest, and a good trivet gives a hot pot somewhere to land. Pair them with dry dish towels for your hands.
