How to choose placemats for a round table
On a long table, almost any placemat works. On a round one, a few measurements decide whether the table looks set or crowded.
Measure the table, then do the arithmetic
A mat at the edge of a round table reaches toward the middle by its full depth. On a 36-inch table, two 15-inch round mats facing each other use 30 of the 36 inches, leaving about 6 inches between them for a salt shaker and not much else. On a 48-inch table the same mats leave about 18 inches, enough for a tortilla basket and a bowl of salsa. Subtract twice the mat’s diameter from the table’s diameter and you know how much center space is left.
Round, wedge or rectangle
Round mats are the natural match: they have no corners to point at each other and they look even all the way around. Wedge mats, like the SHACOS set, are wider at the seat and narrower toward the middle, so they follow the circle and suit small tables best. Rectangular mats can work on a large round table, but on a small one their inner corners meet in the middle.
Count the seats, not the box
