A layer cake is easier with a matched set. Two identical pans bake two identical layers at the same pace, and that matters more than almost anything else when you stack them.
The harder call is what those pans should be: 8 inches or 9, coated or bare, light or dark. This guide compares eight sets from six makers, and tells you plainly where independent reviews found problems.

Quick verdict: which round cake pan set to buy
For most kitchens, the best round cake pan set is the USA Pan 9-inch Nonstick Set of 2: light, coated, more than 2 inches deep, and rated Recommended by America’s Test Kitchen, although one other test saw doming. For 8-inch recipes and plain metal, choose the Nordic Ware Naturals 8-inch 2-Pack and line it with parchment. For a coated tier set, choose the Chicago Metallic 6, 8 and 10-inch Set.

Our picks for the best round cake pan set
These eight sets cover coated and uncoated pairs in the two common sizes, plus three-size tier sets. Each pick says who it suits, what reviewers found where they covered it, and one honest reason to skip it.
1. USA Pan 9-inch Nonstick Round Cake Pan Set of 2 – Light, Coated and Made in the USA

A matched pair with most of what a layer cake pan should have: a light finish, a nonstick coating and depth to spare. America’s Test Kitchen slightly preferred light pans to dark ones, wanted a slick coating, and asked for at least 2 inches of depth. This pan is 2.25 inches deep, and that review gave USA Pan’s 9-inch a Recommended rating.
The coating is Americoat, which USA Pan describes as a patented silicone coating free of PTFE, PFOA and BPA. Wash with hot water, mild soap and a gentle brush or sponge. The set is made in the USA, and USA Pan says it has made bakeware there for more than 50 years.
Not every test agrees. Reviewed found its USA Pan cakes less nonstick than those from a Chicago Metallic pan, and they domed the most. Line the bottoms with parchment and trim a domed top if you want a flat stack.
Why we like it
- Light silver finish, as the review favored
- 2.25 inches deep
- PTFE- and PFOA-free silicone coating, per USA Pan
- Made in the USA
Key specifications
| Model | 1070LC-ST-2-1 |
|---|---|
| Set includes | Two 9-inch pans |
| Material | Aluminized steel |
| Coating | Americoat silicone |
| Depth | 2.25 inches |
| Oven limit | Not stated |
| Care | Hot water, mild soap, gentle brush |
| Made in | USA |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you make 9-inch two-layer cakes and want a coated set that is a real pair rather than two loose pans. It has outside support, plus a mixed note we think you should read.
Skip it if a perfectly flat top matters more than anything. Reviewed saw these dome the most, so you may need to level each layer.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Matched pair
- Deep and light-colored
- Made in the USA
Cons
- Dome noted by one test
- Less nonstick than a rival in that test
- No oven limit stated
2. Nordic Ware Naturals 9-inch Round Cake Pan, 2-Pack – Plain Aluminum, Even Browning

Nordic Ware’s plain aluminum pair, with no nonstick claim in the listing. Natural aluminum conducts heat well and browns evenly, says Nordic Ware, and the rims are encapsulated to prevent warping. The pans are 9 inches across inside, 9.6 outside, and 2.5 inches tall, the deepest set here.
Be careful with one detail. The pan that won America’s Test Kitchen’s Best Buy is Nordic Ware’s nonstick Naturals version, which our cake pan guide covers, not this uncoated set. The same review had trouble with uncoated pans, so butter, flour and a parchment round are not optional here.
Nordic Ware says these are made in America from domestic and imported materials.
Why we like it
- Natural aluminum, stated to brown evenly
- Encapsulated rims to prevent warping
- 2.5 inches tall
- Made in America of domestic and imported materials
Key specifications
| Model | 46904AMZ |
|---|---|
| Set includes | Two 9-inch pans |
| Material | Natural aluminum |
| Coating | None listed |
| Depth | 2.5 inches |
| Oven limit | Not stated |
| Care | Not stated |
| Made in | USA, of domestic and imported materials |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you line pans as a habit and want plain metal with no coating to wear out.
Skip it if you want a pan that releases without parchment. Choose the nonstick Nordic Ware instead.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Deepest set here
- Warp-resistant rims
- No coating to wear out
Cons
- Needs lining and greasing
- Uncoated pans stuck in the review
- Not the review’s Best Buy
3. Nordic Ware Naturals 8-inch Round Cake Pan, 2-Pack – The Pair for Taller 8-inch Layers

Same material and build as the 9-inch set above, in the size many layer recipes now call for. An 8-inch pan makes a narrower, taller layer from the same batter, and two of them cover the classic birthday cake.
The pans are 8 inches across inside, 8.6 outside and 2.5 inches high. America’s Test Kitchen has praised Nordic Ware’s nonstick 8-inch pan for beautiful three-layer cakes, but again that was the coated version, and this pair is uncoated, so line them.
If you want three layers, you will need a third pan, as this is a pair.
Why we like it
- 8 inches across inside
- 2.5 inches high
- Natural aluminum
- Encapsulated rims
Key specifications
| Model | 46804AMZ |
|---|---|
| Set includes | Two 8-inch pans |
| Material | Natural aluminum |
| Coating | None listed |
| Depth | 2.5 inches |
| Oven limit | Not stated |
| Care | Not stated |
| Made in | USA, of domestic and imported materials |
Why we recommend it
Choose it for 8-inch recipes and for taller cakes. Pairing 8-inch and 9-inch sets covers nearly every layer recipe you will meet.
Skip it if you bake only from 9-inch recipes, since batter amounts do not transfer without some care.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Popular recipe size
- Deep sides
- No coating to scratch
Cons
- Needs parchment
- Two pans only
- Care details not stated

4. Fat Daddio’s 8 x 2-inch Anodized Aluminum Set of 2 – Solid, Uncoated Bakery Pans

A bakery-style pan for bakers who already grease and line every time. It is 16-gauge anodized aluminum with a solid bottom, rated to 550°F, and Fat Daddio’s says it contains no PFAS, PTFE or PFOA and is safe with citrus batters.
The evidence is mixed, and you should know that going in. America’s Test Kitchen gave Fat Daddio’s 9-inch pan a Recommended with Reservations rating, saying the lack of a nonstick coating was a big problem. Reviewed’s cakes stuck in its 8 by 3-inch pan. Both results fit: this is an uncoated pan, and it needs a parchment round.
Fat Daddio’s rates it for the air fryer, pressure cooker and freezer, and recommends hand washing. The interior is 8 inches and the overall width is 9, so check it fits in your storage.
Why we like it
- 16-gauge anodized aluminum
- Rated to 550°F
- Stated free of PFAS, PTFE and PFOA
- Lifetime warranty, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | PRD series, 8 x 2 |
|---|---|
| Set includes | Two 8-inch pans |
| Material | Anodized aluminum |
| Coating | None |
| Depth | 2 inches |
| Oven limit | 550°F |
| Care | Hand washing recommended |
| Made in | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you line pans anyway and want solid, uncoated pans. It suits cake bakers who have a routine.
Skip it if you want cakes to release without preparation. Two independent reviews found sticking.
Pros and cons
Pros
- High heat rating
- No coating
- Citrus safe, per the maker
Cons
- Sticking reported in two reviews
- Must be lined
- Third-party seller when checked
5. Wilton 9 x 2-inch Aluminum Cake Pan Set of 2 – Straight Sides From a Big Baking Brand

A plain, well-known set for the occasional cake. Wilton sells this as aluminum, made without PFAS, 9 inches across and 2 inches deep, with straight sides for clean edges, oven safe to 450°F.
This is not a coated pan, and it has a known weakness. Reviewed found cakes stuck in Wilton’s aluminum 8-inch set even after greasing, so take parchment seriously. The listing title also says dishwasher safe while its care line says not dishwasher safe. We would follow the care line and wash by hand.
In an entry-level pan, what you give up is the coating and the extra depth, while keeping the shape that makes a tidy stack. If you bake a cake twice a year, that is a fair exchange.
Why we like it
- 2 inches deep with straight sides
- Made without PFAS, per Wilton
- Oven safe to 450°F
- Sold as a pair
Key specifications
| Model | 191003076 |
|---|---|
| Set includes | Two 9-inch pans |
| Material | Aluminum |
| Coating | None; made without PFAS |
| Depth | 2 inches |
| Oven limit | 450°F |
| Care | Hand wash; title and care line disagree |
| Made in | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
Choose it for a simple 9-inch pair from a brand easy to find, if you do not mind lining the pans.
Skip it if you do not use parchment. A test of Wilton’s similar pan found sticking even after greasing.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Straight sides
- Stated oven limit
- Widely known brand
Cons
- Sticking in one test
- Contradictory care wording
- Only 2 inches deep
6. Wilton 4, 6 and 8-inch Aluminum Round Cake Pan Set – Small Tiers From One Box

This is a tier set rather than a layer pair: one each of 4, 6 and 8 inches, all 2 inches deep. It suits a small celebration cake or individual desserts, which is how Wilton describes it.
It is anodized aluminum, made without PFAS, which Wilton describes as rust-resistant and non-reactive. The listing shows a limited lifetime warranty and says it was designed in the USA, which is not the same as made there.
Like the other uncoated Wilton pans, it should be greased and lined. A round of parchment is especially helpful in the smallest pan, where tearing shows most.
Why we like it
- Three sizes for a tiered cake
- Anodized aluminum, per the listing
- Made without PFAS, per Wilton
- Limited lifetime warranty
Key specifications
| Model | 2105-0472 |
|---|---|
| Set includes | One each of 4, 6 and 8 inches |
| Material | Anodized aluminum |
| Coating | None; made without PFAS |
| Depth | 2 inches |
| Oven limit | Not stated |
| Care | Not stated |
| Made in | Not stated; designed in the USA |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you want to try a small tiered cake without buying pans one by one.
Skip it if you want matched layers. With one pan in each size, you would bake in batches to make a tall cake.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Three useful sizes
- Lifetime warranty
- Rust resistant, per the listing
Cons
- Only one pan of each size
- Must be lined
- No oven limit stated

7. Chicago Metallic Professional 6, 8 and 10-inch Set – Coated Tiers, Dishwasher Safe

The coated alternative to the Wilton tier set, with larger sizes: one each of 6, 8 and 10 inches. It is heavy-weight aluminized steel with a nonstick coating, and the listing says layers release without cracking.
Outside evidence for the brand runs both ways. Reviewed found a Chicago Metallic pan more nonstick than the USA Pan, while America’s Test Kitchen gave its 9-inch a Recommended rating and said the dark finish radiated a lot of heat. Those were not this exact set, and this set’s finish is gray.
It is listed as dishwasher safe, with hand washing recommended for the coating, and carries a lifetime limited warranty. Check your cake a few minutes early, since a darker pan can brown faster.
Why we like it
- Heavy-weight aluminized steel
- Nonstick coating
- Three tier sizes
- Lifetime limited warranty
Key specifications
| Model | 5233128 |
|---|---|
| Set includes | One each of 6, 8 and 10 inches |
| Material | Aluminized steel |
| Coating | Nonstick |
| Depth | Not stated |
| Oven limit | Not stated |
| Care | Dishwasher safe; hand washing recommended |
| Made in | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
Choose it for a tiered celebration cake if you want a coating that handles release for you.
Skip it if you mainly bake two-layer cakes. One pan in each size means you are buying sizes you may not use.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Coated for easy release
- Larger tiers than the Wilton
- Lifetime warranty
Cons
- Finish may brown faster
- Only one pan per size
- Depth not stated
8. Farberware Golden Bake 8-inch Cake Pan Set of 2 – Insulated Against Burnt Bottoms

An entry-level pair for occasional bakers, with a feature the others lack. Farberware builds an air pocket into each pan, and says this improves airflow and gives even heating with fewer burnt bottoms.
The pans are heavy-gauge steel with a nonstick coating, oven safe to 450°F. Farberware says the design does not intentionally add PFAS, PFOA, lead or cadmium to the interior coating, and it adds the careful note that these may otherwise be present in the environment.
Insulated pans can slow browning and may take a little longer, so test for doneness rather than going only by the clock. We found no independent test of this set, and the listing does not give a depth.
Why we like it
- Air pocket insulation, per Farberware
- Heavy-gauge steel
- Nonstick coating
- Oven safe to 450°F
Key specifications
| Model | 48432 |
|---|---|
| Set includes | Two 8-inch pans |
| Material | Heavy-gauge steel |
| Coating | Nonstick |
| Depth | Not stated |
| Oven limit | 450°F |
| Care | Not stated |
| Made in | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
Choose it if you bake once or twice a year and worry about dark bottoms. A pair at the entry level still gives you a real layer cake.
Skip it if you want tall layers or review support. The depth is not stated, and no independent test was found.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Insulated base
- Coated for release
- Stated oven limit
Cons
- No independent test found
- Depth not stated
- May need longer baking
How to choose a round cake pan set
America’s Test Kitchen’s round cake pan review and Reviewed’s cake pan roundup are the two outside sources we use here. They do not always agree, which is useful in itself.
1. 8 and 9 inch cake pans
Most American layer recipes call for one of these two sizes. A 9-inch pan gives a wider, slightly shorter layer, and an 8-inch pan gives a narrower, taller one from the same batter, so swapping sizes changes the baking time. If you buy only one set, buy the size your favorite recipes use.
2. Depth
America’s Test Kitchen likes round cake pans that are at least 2 inches deep. Shallower pans risk overflow with generous recipes, and a deeper pan has room for a tall layer.

3. Light or dark
Those reviewers slightly preferred light pans, since dark pans absorb more heat and can brown faster. If you buy a dark pan, start checking a few minutes early.
4. Coated or uncoated
That review called a slick coating essential for a good cake pan, and uncoated pans gave it trouble. Bakers who line every pan may not mind, and uncoated pans have nothing to scratch. Our guide to baking pan liners covers precut parchment.
5. Straight sides
America’s Test Kitchen vetoed angled sides, since straight sides make better layer cakes. Every pan here is sold as a round cake pan, but only some listings mention the sides, so check the photos.
How we picked these eight sets
The title of this page promises sets, so every pick is a set of at least two pans from a named maker, sold new and in stock on Amazon in the United States. We read each listing for size, depth, material, coating and care. We used the two reviews above for how pans behave and did not bake in these pans ourselves. Some pans those reviews rate highly are sold singly, such as the Nordic Ware nonstick pans in our cake pan guide, so they are not here. The Williams Sonoma pan that won America’s Test Kitchen’s review did not come up in our Amazon searches. Reviews covered specific sizes, and we say so where a verdict is for a similar pan rather than the exact set.

Round cake pan questions, answered
Do I need two cake pans or can I use one?
You can bake one layer at a time, but a matched pair bakes both layers at once and at the same pace. That is why the sets here make life easier for layer cakes.
Should I buy 8-inch or 9-inch pans?
Go by your recipes. Plenty of home bakers end up with both sizes, since each comes up often. The Nordic Ware sets above make that easy to do in one material.
How do I stop a cake from sticking?
Grease the pan, add a parchment round to the bottom and grease again. On uncoated pans we would treat this as required, since two reviews found sticking in uncoated pans.
Can round cake pans go in the dishwasher?
Check each one. Wilton’s aluminum care line says not, Chicago Metallic says yes but suggests hand washing, and Fat Daddio’s recommends hand washing. When in doubt, wash by hand.
Why did my cake dome?
Reviewed saw the most doming from its USA Pan cakes. A trimmed top is the simple fix, and it also gives a flatter surface to stack.
Our last word on round cake pans
Buy the USA Pan pair if you want a light, coated set for 9-inch cakes. Choose a Nordic Ware pair if you line your pans anyway, in 8 inches or 9. Reach for a three-size set only if you actually plan to stack a tiered cake.
