Layers, Sheets or Bundts: The Best Cake Carrier for Each

The best cake carrier for layer cakes, a 9 x 13 tres leches, ring cakes and cupcakes, from makers that state their materials, and what each one holds.

A white frosted layer cake topped with raspberries on a plate
A frosted layer cake needs a carrier with room above the top.

A cake is the easy part. Getting it across town with the frosting still on is harder. A good carrier holds the cake still, keeps the lid off the top and gives you something to grip, and it should not fill your whole cupboard the rest of the year.

Most cake carriers on Amazon come from sellers with little behind them beyond the listing, and this is a product that touches food. So this guide keeps to established makers and says plainly how much independent evidence each one has. It is sorted by the kind of cake you actually carry: a tall layer cake, a 9 x 13 tres leches, a ring cake or two dozen cupcakes.

Quick verdict: which cake carrier to buy

The best cake carrier for most kitchens is the PrepWorks Collapsible Cupcake and Cake Carrier: Progressive’s collapsible design won America’s Test Kitchen’s review, it holds a 9-inch layer cake or 24 cupcakes, and it folds down for storage. For a 9 x 13 cake such as tres leches, choose the Tupperware Rectangular Cake and Cupcake Carrier. For an airtight box with a lift-out tray, choose the LocknLock Round Cake Box, as long as your cake is low.

If you want a cake on display as well as covered, our guide to the best cake stand with dome is the place to start.

Our picks for the best cake carrier

These seven carriers cover round layer cakes, sheet cakes, ring cakes, cupcakes and group events. Each pick says what it holds, what we could and could not confirm, and one honest reason to skip it. Where a carrier has no independent review, we say so.

1. PrepWorks Collapsible Cupcake and Cake Carrier – Tall When Full, Flat in the Cupboard

Best overallPrepWorks Collapsible Cupcake Carrier - 12-Cup Capacity

The carrier to buy if you want one that handles a real layer cake and then gets out of the way. A flexible band in the lid lets it stand 9.88 inches tall for travel and collapse to 5 inches for the shelf, which is the main complaint solved: cake carriers take up a lot of cupboard.

It has the strongest independent backing of any carrier we found. Progressive, the company behind PrepWorks, made the collapsible cake and cupcake carrier that America’s Test Kitchen named as its winner and rated Highly Recommended in an older review. Its testers frosted chocolate layer cakes and drove them down pothole-riddled roads. Every cake in that review survived, so design decided the result. We could not match the model numbers exactly, but the capacity is the same: America’s Test Kitchen gives a 9-inch round or square layer cake or 24 cupcakes, and this listing gives a 9-inch round cake up to 6 inches tall or 24 cupcakes.

Two cautions. The listing title says 12-cup capacity while its details say 24 cupcakes, and the review and listing details agree on 24, so that is the figure we trust. Baking Bites, reviewing an earlier version, also found it is not airtight, since holes near the handle let air out when the lid collapses. It is a transport carrier first, and not the best choice for keeping a cake fresh for days.

Why we like it

  • Winner of America’s Test Kitchen’s cake carrier review (Progressive model)
  • Collapses from 9.88 to 5 inches for storage
  • Holds a 9-inch cake up to 6 inches tall or 24 cupcakes
  • 1-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model BCC-1GY
Fits 9-inch round cake up to 6 inches tall, or 24 cupcakes
Outside size 15.75 inches wide; 9.88 inches tall open, 5 inches collapsed
Material Not stated on the listing
Lid lock Snap latches
Handle Top handle
Cleaning Not stated on the listing
Warranty 1-year limited

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who transports a layer cake a few times a year and has little cupboard space, which describes most home kitchens. Cupcake bakers get the same carrier with room for two dozen.

Skip it if you want an airtight cake keeper, or you bake 10-inch cakes. Tasting Table also notes that some buyers say the latches do not stay locked, so check them before you lift it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Strong independent review record
  • Collapses for storage
  • Handles cakes and cupcakes

Cons

  • Not airtight
  • Some buyers report latch trouble
  • Listing title and details disagree on capacity

2. Tupperware Rectangular Cake and Cupcake Carrier – Made for a 9 x 13 Cake

Best for sheet cakesTupperware

The rectangular cake is the one most carriers ignore, and in a Mexican kitchen it is often the one that matters. Tres leches is usually baked in a 9 x 13 pan, and this Tupperware carrier is made for that shape, with a base tray that holds a single or double layer quarter sheet cake.

Flip the tray over and it holds 18 cupcakes in shallow wells. The listing describes a secure lock system and a large handle, and it says the carrier is dishwasher safe. Tupperware lists the material as BPA-free polypropylene. The reversible tray also does a second job as a serving tray once you arrive.

A note on size. Tupperware’s own site gives the outside as 11.2 by 5.9 by 18.4 inches, while the Amazon listing gives 17.62 by 9 by 6 inches. The 9-inch width on Amazon looks too narrow for a 9 x 13 cake, so we trust Tupperware’s numbers. We found no test-kitchen review of this carrier, though one buyer noted that the latch areas are not very thick, so carry it level and do not overfill it. Tupperware is a long-established maker of food storage.

Why we like it

  • Reversible tray: 9 x 13 cake on one side, 18 cupcakes on the other
  • Holds single or double layer quarter sheet cakes
  • Secure lock system and a large handle
  • Dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model 173870
Fits 9 x 13 single or double layer cake, or 18 cupcakes
Outside size 11.2 x 18.4 x 5.9 inches (Tupperware)
Material BPA-free polypropylene (Tupperware)
Lid lock Secure lock system
Handle Large top handle
Cleaning Dishwasher safe
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who bakes sheet cakes for birthdays, office parties or family gatherings. A flat cake needs a flat, wide tray, and this one saves you carrying the pan with foil on top. Read our note on flan and tres leches if you are deciding what to bring.

Skip it if you bake round layer cakes, because a round cake will slide around on this tray, or if soaked cake could leak, since the listing does not claim it is leakproof.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Fits the common 9 x 13 size
  • Two-sided tray for cupcakes
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • No independent test found
  • Amazon dimensions disagree with Tupperware’s
  • Not stated as leakproof

3. LocknLock Round Cake Box, 5.5 L – Four Locks and a Lift-Out Tray

Best airtightLock & Lock Round Cake Box - Clear/Blue

If you want one box that travels and also keeps a cake fresh in the refrigerator, start here. Lock & Lock’s name comes from its four-sided locking lid, and the listing describes the box as 100% airtight and leak proof. That is the feature the collapsible PrepWorks lacks.

The Amazon listing is short, so we looked at retailers for the rest. UK sellers describe a removable tray with handles and a cutting guide, a folding carry handle and room for a 25-centimeter cake, about 10 inches. A lift-out tray is a real advantage, because getting a frosted cake out of a box is usually harder than putting it in.

Height is the limit. Sources disagree on the dimensions, but one retailer gives about 13.5 centimeters outside and 8 centimeters inside, roughly 3 inches of cake height. That suggests a single layer, a tart or a low sponge, and not a tall layer cake. Measure your cake first. The listing says it is BPA free, safe in the freezer and microwave, and top-rack dishwasher safe.

Why we like it

  • Four-sided locking lid
  • Described as airtight and leak proof
  • Removable tray, per retailers
  • Freezer and microwave safe, and top-rack dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model HSM954HT
Fits About 10 inches across, per retailers; low height
Outside size About 11 to 13 inches across, per retailers; sources vary
Material BPA-free plastic
Lid lock Four-sided lock
Handle Folding carry handle, per retailers
Cleaning Top-rack dishwasher safe
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits a baker who wants a low, sealed box for a single-layer cake, a citrus cake or a batch of pastries, and who also wants to keep it in the refrigerator.

Skip it if you need to carry a layer cake with height, since the reported inside height is low. Retailer specs vary, so check the listing photos before you buy.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Airtight lid
  • Handy lift-out tray
  • Doubles as a storage box

Cons

  • Limited height
  • Thin details on the Amazon listing
  • No independent test found

4. LocknLock Square Cake Storage Box, 12.6 L – Room for a Taller Cake

Best large boxLOCK & LOCK Cake Storage Box

This is the bigger sibling of the round box, and the better LocknLock for a layer cake. Retailers give the capacity as 12.6 liters and the size as about 13 by 12.6 by 7 inches. That extra height is the whole point, as it leaves more room above a frosted cake.

The Amazon listing states more about safety than most here: it says the box is made from BPA-free polypropylene and meets FDA standards. It is microwave and freezer safe and top-rack dishwasher safe. Retailers describe four locks, a folding handle and a freshness tray, and the listing includes a one-year limited warranty against chipping, cracking, breaking or peeling under normal non-commercial use.

The shape is square, even though some listings call it rectangular. No inside height is stated, so measure your cake against the 7-inch outside height and allow for the base and lid. It is also a large box to store, with no collapsing lid.

Why we like it

  • 12.6-liter capacity, per retailers
  • Listing says BPA-free polypropylene that meets FDA standards
  • Four locks and a folding handle, per retailers
  • 1-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model HLS102
Fits Not stated; inside size not given
Outside size About 13 x 12.6 x 7 inches, per retailers
Material Polypropylene, BPA free
Lid lock Four locks, per retailers
Handle Folding handle, per retailers
Cleaning Top-rack dishwasher safe
Warranty 1-year limited

Why we recommend it

It suits bakers who want a square, sealed box for a layer cake, with a real maker statement on materials, and who have the shelf space to keep it.

Skip it if storage space is tight, or you want a slim carrier. A box this size takes up a good part of a cupboard shelf.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Clear materials statement
  • Room for a taller cake
  • One-year limited warranty

Cons

  • Bulky to store
  • Inside height not stated
  • No independent test found

5. Nordic Ware Deluxe Bundt Cake Keeper – A Dome Sized for a Bundt

Best for ring cakesNordic Ware Cake Keeper

A ring cake is tall, wide and easily dented, and a flat lid is the wrong shape for it. Nordic Ware invented the Bundt pan, so it is no surprise that it also sells a clear keeper shaped for one. It suits a marble ring cake, or a chocoflan baked in a Bundt pan.

The listing gives the size as 12.8 by 12.8 by 7.7 inches and says the lid locks to the base for transport. It is made in the USA of high-impact clear plastic, it is dishwasher safe, and it comes with a five-year warranty. BestReviews names it a top pick and likes the locking lid and clear view, but warns that the plastic can crack if treated roughly.

Unlike most carriers here, the listing does not describe a handle, so plan to carry it with two hands from underneath. Let a cake cool completely before you put it on the base, as Nordic Ware says. It is not the same product as the translucent Nordic Ware keeper on our cake stand page; this one is the clear deluxe version.

Why we like it

  • Made in the USA, per the listing
  • Lid locks to the base for transport
  • Clear plastic shows the cake
  • Five-year warranty

Key specifications

Model 50001
Fits Bundt and other ring cakes
Outside size 12.8 x 12.8 x 7.7 inches
Material High-impact clear plastic
Lid lock Locks to base
Handle None stated
Cleaning Dishwasher safe
Warranty 5 years

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who bakes ring cakes, or who wants a clear keeper for the counter that can also travel. Nordic Ware has a strong record in Bundt pans, and the fit is the reason to buy it.

Skip it if you want to carry it one-handed, or you are hard on your equipment, since BestReviews flags the plastic as fragile.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Shaped for a tall ring cake
  • Made in the USA
  • Long warranty

Cons

  • No handle stated
  • Plastic can crack
  • Takes up counter space

6. Snapware Snap ‘N Stack 2-Layer Cupcake Carrier – Two Layers, 24 Cupcakes

Best for cupcakesSnapware (2-Layer

Cupcakes have the opposite problem to a big cake: they need holding in place. This Snapware carrier stacks two trays, each with wells for a dozen, so 24 cupcakes or cookies can travel in one latched, handled unit. BestReviews named it the top pick in its cupcake carrier guide.

The stacking trays are what make it useful. You can add or remove trays as needed, according to the listing, and each layer keeps its food separate. One roundup warns that the wells are shallow and small, so large, heavily frosted cupcakes may not sit deep. Keep the frosting moderate or try a tray first.

The container and lid are BPA-free polypropylene, and the listing says they are microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe, with the lid on the top rack only. It is made in the USA with a one-year limited warranty. Some retailers describe the base as also holding a quarter sheet cake, but the Amazon listing does not say so. Treat this as a cupcake and cookie carrier first.

Why we like it

  • Holds 24 cupcakes or cookies on two trays
  • Add or remove trays as needed
  • BPA-free polypropylene, per the listing
  • Made in the USA, with a limited warranty

Key specifications

Model 6032
Fits 24 cupcakes or cookies
Outside size 14.25 x 10.5 inches, height not stated
Material BPA-free polypropylene
Lid lock Latching lid
Handle Top handle
Cleaning Dishwasher safe (lid top rack only)
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone taking cupcakes to a school event, birthday or office, and anyone who wants trays that stack in place. It also works for cookies, so it earns its shelf space.

Skip it if you mostly carry whole cakes, or you top cupcakes with very tall frosting. The first three carriers on this page serve cakes better.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Good capacity for its size
  • Stackable trays
  • BestReviews top pick for cupcakes

Cons

  • Shallow wells
  • Not for tall layer cakes
  • Lid is top-rack only

7. Sterilite Cake Server Carrier, 12 Pack – A Dozen Simple Carriers

Best for bake salesSterilite 12 Pack Cake Carrier with Clear Lid & Handle

This is a case of twelve, so it is not for most home kitchens, and it is here for one reason. Our cake stand page already covers the single Sterilite Cake Server, and this listing is the same carrier sold by the dozen. If you organize bake sales, school fundraisers or church events, or you give away cakes in the carrier, a case makes more sense than one.

Each carrier pairs a clear lid with a white base, tight-clasping latches and a handle on the lid. The outside is 13 7/8 by 13 5/8 by 8 inches. The listing says it fits a 12-inch round cake, while Tasting Table, which notes that reviewers find it sturdy and well built, puts the fit at 10 inches. Allow for the smaller figure if you plan to use a frosted cake.

Sterilite says on a related listing that its products are made in the USA and are free of BPA and phthalates. The carriers are dishwasher safe, which helps when a dozen come back after an event. Check how the seller packs them before you order, as this is a bulk purchase.

Why we like it

  • Twelve carriers for group events
  • Latches hold the lid to the base
  • 8 inches tall on the outside
  • Dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model Not stated
Fits 10-inch to 12-inch round cake, depending on the source
Outside size 13 7/8 x 13 5/8 x 8 inches
Material Plastic; BPA and phthalate free per Sterilite
Lid lock Tight-clasping latches
Handle Top handle on lid
Cleaning Dishwasher safe
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits organizers who need several identical carriers at once. For a single carrier, see the one on our cake stand page, or the PrepWorks at the top of this list.

Skip it if you only need one. Buying a case for a single cake makes no sense, and the single unit is the better buy.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Tall enough for layer cakes
  • Simple and easy to wash
  • Enough for a whole event

Cons

  • Sold only as a case of 12
  • Fit figures vary
  • Bulky to store

How to choose a carrier for the cakes you bake

A mint green cake with pink piping on a white stand
Tall decoration needs extra inside height, so measure before you buy.

Measure the cake, not the box. Outside dimensions flatter a carrier, because walls and the lid take up space. Add the cake board and the frosting, then look for inside height. Where a listing gives none, as several here do, allow a margin.

Match the shape. A round carrier is wasted on a 9 x 13 cake, and a sheet cake needs a wide flat tray. If you bake ring cakes, get a keeper with enough height for the center. A tres leches also needs thought, because a soaked cake can weep, so keep it level and in its pan if you can.

Check how the lid locks. Latches are the part buyers complain about most in the reviews we read. A lid that lifts off with the handle is a real risk, so check that the handle is attached to the base or that latches hold firmly before you lift a full carrier.

Think about storage. A rigid carrier for a big cake is a large object for a tool you may use a few times a year. Collapsible designs solve that, at the cost of an airtight seal. Decide which matters more to you.

Secure the cake once it is inside. America’s Test Kitchen suggests taping the cake round to the carrier base so it cannot slide, and laying a damp towel in the trunk under the carrier so it stays put.

How we picked these seven carriers

We have not used these products ourselves. We searched the full run of carriers on Amazon, kept in-stock items, and looked for maker information and independent reviews. The main source is America’s Test Kitchen’s cake carrier review, supported by notes from Baking Bites, BestReviews and Tasting Table. Tasting Table’s list draws on customer reviews instead of its own trials.

We were strict because these carriers touch food. Many sellers rank well on Amazon but have no maker site to speak of and no independent review, and we left them out even where they looked useful. We also passed on a Wilton carrier listing whose details describe a 14-inch aluminum pan, and a foil-pan holder with no handle. The Tupperware and LocknLock boxes have no independent test that we could find, and we kept them because the makers are established and state their materials. We found no cpsc.gov recall for a cake carrier from any of these makers.

Cake carrier questions, answered

What is the best cake carrier with lid and handle for a layer cake?

The PrepWorks carrier is our pick, because it stands tall enough for a 9-inch cake up to 6 inches high and has the best independent record. For a larger cake, the Sterilite carrier on our covered cake stand page is 8 inches tall on the outside.

Can I carry a frosted cake without it touching the lid?

Yes, if the carrier has enough inside height. Allow for the cake, its board and any decoration, then add a margin. If in doubt, chill the cake until the frosting is firm before you put it in the carrier.

Is a cake carrier airtight?

Not always. The LocknLock listing says airtight, while the Progressive collapsible design has vent holes near the handle, according to Baking Bites. If you want to keep a cake for several days, choose a sealed box.

How should I carry a tres leches?

Keep it in its pan, on a flat surface, and level throughout the trip. A wide rectangular carrier such as the Tupperware fits a 9 x 13 cake. For the difference between the two most popular party desserts, see flan vs tres leches, and for a pan that fits, our 9 x 13 cake pan guide.

Do cake carriers fit in a dishwasher?

Many do, but check the listing. The Tupperware, Nordic Ware and Sterilite carriers are listed as dishwasher safe. The LocknLock boxes and the Snapware lid are top rack only. The PrepWorks listing does not say.

Our final pick for carrying cake

Buy the PrepWorks collapsible carrier if you transport a round layer cake now and then and do not want a bulky box all year. Choose the Tupperware for sheet cakes, the LocknLock boxes if an airtight seal matters most, the Nordic Ware keeper for ring cakes and the Snapware for cupcakes. Whichever you choose, tape the cake board down and keep the carrier level in the car.
