Wood, Steel or Salad Hands? How to Pick the Best Salad Servers

Eight sets from OXO, WMF, Rösle, Nambe and more, and how bowl size, material and care decide the best salad servers for your table.

A chopped salad laid out in rows, with wooden servers ready.

Salad servers do a small job that most kitchens get wrong by using whatever is nearby. A cooking spoon and a dinner fork can move a salad, but they are too short for a full bowl, and they tend to push leaves over the rim. A proper pair lifts from underneath, carries dressing up through the salad and gets it to the plate in one move.

A kitchen chooses a serving tool by the size of the bowl, what the tool touches and how it gets cleaned. The same questions pick the best salad servers for your table. Wood is gentle and looks good; steel goes in the dishwasher; salad hands and tongs each solve a different problem.

Quick verdict: which salad server set to buy

For most homes, the best salad servers are the OXO Good Grips Beechwood Salad Servers: tines spaced so salad does not stick, handles long enough to stay out of the bowl, and a stated food-grade mineral oil finish. If it has to go in the dishwasher, choose the WMF Corvo steel set. For one-handed serving at a buffet, choose the Nambe Curvo Salad Scissors.

Below are eight sets from eight makers, each with one honest reason to skip it.

Our picks for the best salad servers

We start with the wood and steel sets most people want, then move to salad hands, tongs and more particular designs. Each pick answers a different need, and each maker appears once.

1. OXO Good Grips Beechwood Salad Servers – Spaced Tines and a Clear Finish

Best overallOXO Good Grips Beechwood Salad Servers - 2-Piece Set

This is the set we would start with, because OXO has thought about the two things that go wrong with salad servers. The tines are spaced generously so leaves and pieces do not get stuck, and the handles are long enough, the maker says, to keep them from slipping into a large bowl. Anyone who has fished a server out of the dressing knows why that second detail matters.

The pair is solid beechwood, and OXO is unusually clear about the finish: food-grade mineral oil. Many wooden servers on Amazon say nothing about what is on the surface, so a stated finish is a real point in its favor for something that sits in your food. The curved heads also nest together, which keeps the pair tidy in a drawer.

Wood is gentle on a wooden or glazed bowl and quiet in use. The trade-off is care. These are hand wash only, and like any wooden tool they should be dried soon after washing. OXO does not give the length in the listing, so check it against your bowl.

Why we like it

  • Food-grade mineral oil finish is stated by the maker
  • Generously spaced tines to limit stuck pieces, per OXO
  • Handles long enough not to slip into a large bowl, per OXO
  • Heads nest for storage

2. WMF Corvo Salad Servers, Set of 2 – Scratch-Resistant Stainless Steel

Best stainlessWMF Salad Servers Set of 2 Corvo Cromargan Protect Stainless Steel Polished Extremely Scratch Resistant

WMF is a long-standing German cutlery maker, and this pair is made from its Cromargan Protect stainless steel. The listing says the material goes through a patented process that makes it extremely scratch resistant, so the set is meant to keep its look through years of daily use. It is also listed as rust-free, acid resistant and dishwasher safe, which covers a vinegar dressing left on the servers for a while.

The fork and spoon are 24 cm long in the feature list, or a little under 9 1/2 inches, with the listing’s size field showing 25 cm. That is a table-sized pair, better for serving from a medium bowl than for tossing a huge one. The design is by Köhler & Wilms and the listing notes a red dot design award.

The listing is not fully consistent. The title says polished while a feature line says matt finish, so look closely at the photos before you buy. It says the set comes from WMF’s own plant in Heshan, China.

Why we like it

  • Cromargan Protect steel, listed as extremely scratch resistant
  • Dishwasher safe, per the listing
  • Acid resistant, per the listing
  • Made at WMF’s own plant, per the listing

3. Rösle Stainless Steel Salad Servers, 11 in – Reach for Tall, Large Bowls

Best for big bowlsRösle Stainless Steel Salad Serving Utensils

Rösle is a German kitchen tool maker, and these servers come from its 600 series of serving utensils. The set is one salad fork and one serving spoon, each 11 inches long. The listing says the length is meant for tall and large salad bowls, which is the job most short flatware-style servers do badly.

That is the reason it is on this list. When a salad is piled high in a deep bowl, a longer server lets you reach under the leaves and lift, not push them over the rim. The steel is described as unaffected by food acids such as vinegar dressings, and the set is dishwasher safe.

The listing is brief. It does not state the steel grade, the finish or where the pair is made. If those details matter to you, check Rösle’s own product information before buying.

Why we like it

  • 11-inch length for tall and large bowls, per the listing
  • Resists food acids such as vinegar dressings, per the listing
  • Dishwasher safe, per the listing

Key specifications

Model 12641
Material Stainless steel, grade not stated
Length 11 in
Type Spoon and fork
Finish Not stated
Dishwasher Yes
Made in Not stated
Care Dishwasher or hand wash

Why we recommend it

People who serve a big salad in a deep bowl, and cooks who want the same pair to toss in the kitchen and serve at the table.

Skip it if your bowls are small and shallow; shorter servers will sit better.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Long enough for deep bowls
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Handles acidic dressings, per the listing

Cons

  • Thin listing with few specifications
  • Steel grade is not stated
  • Metal can mark some bowls

4. Rock & Branch Olive Wood Salad Servers – Olive Wood From Totally Bamboo

Best olive woodRock & Branch Olive Wood Salad Serving Utensils

Amazon lists this Rock & Branch set under the Totally Bamboo brand, a maker of wooden kitchen goods. The pair is carved from olive wood, and the wavy grain means no two sets look quite the same, as the maker points out. It is the most decorative choice on this page and the one to pick if the servers will sit out on the table.

The design divides the jobs: the spoon holds dressing with each scoop, and the forked piece grabs lettuce, pasta and toppings. That is how servers are meant to work, and it suits a dressed salad with heavier pieces such as beans, corn or cotija.

Care is by hand. Totally Bamboo says to wash with warm soapy water or wipe with a damp cloth, and never to soak the pair or put it in the dishwasher. The listing gives the size only as Medium and does not state a finish, so a little caution on both is fair.

Why we like it

  • Olive wood with a distinct wavy grain
  • Spoon and fork each do a separate job, per the maker
  • Works for pasta as well as salad, per the listing

Key specifications

Model 23-1303
Material Olive wood

  • Handsome natural grain
  • Clear split of jobs between spoon and fork
  • Gentle on bowls

  • Length is not stated
  • No soaking, no dishwasher

5. Lipper Acacia Salad Hands – Scoop With Your Hands, Not the Bowl

Best salad handsLipper International 1102 Acacia Salad Hands

Salad hands are short paddles that you hold one in each hand, so you scoop and toss almost as you would with your bare hands. They are a good answer for big, loose salads, since a full handful of greens comes up at once and little ends up on the table.

Lipper International’s pair is acacia and measures 3 3/4 inches wide by 7 inches long. The listing calls the design contemporary and whimsical, and the shape does sit easily at a casual table. It is a shape worth trying if forks and spoons always seem to push your salad around.

There are limits. At 7 inches they have little reach, so they do not suit a tall, narrow bowl, and your hands stay near the dressing. Lipper says hand wash only and does not state a finish.

Why we like it

  • Lift a full handful of greens at once
  • Acacia wood, per the listing
  • Compact shape stores in a small space

Key specifications

Model 1102
Material Acacia
Length 7 in
Type Salad hands
Finish Not stated
Dishwasher No, hand wash only
Made in Not stated
Care Hand wash

Why we recommend it

Families who toss big green salads in wide bowls, and anyone who finds a fork and spoon clumsy.

Skip it if your bowl is tall and narrow, since 7 inches will not reach the bottom comfortably.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Good grip on loose leaves
  • Takes little drawer space
  • Gentle on bowls

Cons

  • Short reach
  • Hands sit close to the dressing
  • Finish is not stated

6. Nambe Curvo Salad Scissors – One-Handed Salad Tongs

Best salad tongsnambe Curvo Salad Scissors

If you would rather use one hand, this is the page’s pair of salad tongs. Nambe calls it salad scissors: a hinged tool at 13 inches long with acacia wood handles and stainless steel tong ends. You open and close it like scissors, so you can serve yourself with a plate in the other hand.

That makes it a good fit for a buffet or a taco bar, where guests help themselves to a cabbage slaw or a salad and have only one free hand. The listing also suggests it for cooking and grilling, although we would keep a tool with wooden handles away from high heat.

It was designed by Steve Cozzolino in 2015, and it is the longest tool here at 13 inches. Nambe says to hand wash it. Mixed materials like this do not belong in the dishwasher, and the wood will need drying.

Why we like it

  • One-handed scissor action
  • 13-inch reach
  • Acacia and stainless steel, per the maker
  • Made for mixing as well as serving, per the maker

Key specifications

Model MT0796
Material Stainless steel and acacia wood
Length 13 in
Type Salad tongs (scissor style)
Finish Not stated
Dishwasher No, hand wash
Made in Not stated
Care Hand wash

Why we recommend it

Anyone serving a crowd, and hosts who set out a salad for guests to help themselves.

Skip it if you want a set for tossing; a two-piece pair moves a large salad more easily.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Serve with one hand
  • Longest reach on this page
  • Doubles as a table piece

Cons

  • Hand wash only
  • Less tossing power than a two-piece set
  • Hinge is one more place to clean

7. Oneida Chefs Table Salad Servers – Plain Dishwasher-Safe Steel

Simplest stainlessOneida Chefs Table Salad Servers

Oneida is a familiar flatware name, and this is a plain pair: one salad serving spoon and one salad serving fork in 18/0 stainless steel. The listing is short, and so is the case for it. It is simple, dishwasher safe and easy to replace.

18/0 steel contains chromium but no nickel to speak of, which is why it is common in everyday flatware, and it holds up to ordinary use without polishing. The listing does not give the length, only a weight of 1.00 lb in its size field, so measure your bowl before you buy and treat that figure with some care.

This is the set to keep in the drawer for weeknights. It will not start a conversation at the table, and it does not need to.

Why we like it

  • 18/0 stainless steel, per the listing
  • Dishwasher safe, per the listing
  • Spoon and fork in one set

Key specifications

Model H016002A
Material 18/0 stainless steel
Length Not stated
Type Spoon and fork
Finish Not stated
Dishwasher Yes

Care Dishwasher or hand wash

Why we recommend it

Everyday kitchens that want a no-fuss pair and do not want to hand wash anything.

Skip it if you want a stated length, because this listing gives none.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Dishwasher safe
  • Familiar maker
  • No special care

Cons

  • Very short listing

8. Villeroy & Boch Artesano Salad Servers – A Gap to Drain the Dressing

Best for drainingVilleroy & Boch Artesano Original Salad Server Set : Acacia Wood

Villeroy & Boch is a long-established European tableware maker, and this pair is designed to match its Artesano Original dishes. It is acacia wood, 11.25 inches long by the listing’s size field, and shaped as a pair of spoons with one difference: one of the two has a gap in the middle to let dressing drain.

That detail is the reason to choose it. A wet salad with plenty of vinaigrette, or a tomato and onion salad sitting in its juices, tends to bring a puddle along to the plate. A slotted spoon leaves most of that in the bowl. The pair is meant for everyday use and for the table.

Wash it by rinsing in lukewarm water with mild detergent, as the listing says. One line of the listing gives dimensions of 52 x 25 x 2 cm, which looks like a package size and not the spoon, so go by the 11.25-inch figure and check the listing before you buy. The finish is not stated.

Why we like it

  • Gap in one spoon drains dressing, per the listing
  • Acacia wood
  • Matches Artesano Original tableware, per the listing

Key specifications

Model 1041308699
Material Acacia wood
Length 11.25 in
Type Two spoons, one with a gap
Finish Not stated
Dishwasher Not stated, wash by hand
Made in Not stated
Care Lukewarm water and mild detergent

Why we recommend it

People who dress salads generously, and anyone who already owns Artesano dishes.

Skip it if you want a fork; two spoons do not grip long leaves as well.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Leaves extra dressing in the bowl
  • Good length for most bowls
  • Natural wood look

Cons

  • No fork for gripping
  • Finish is not stated
  • Listing has a confusing size line

How to choose salad servers

Salad servers are simple, so a few details decide most of it. Start with your bowl, then think about who does the washing up.

Match the length to the bowl

Measure your bowl from rim to base. Handles should stay well above the rim when the head is at the bottom, or they will slide in. For a large or deep bowl, look for 11 inches or more. For a medium bowl, 9 to 10 inches is plenty. Several listings here do not give a length, and we say so in each pick.

Wood or steel

Wood is quiet, gentle on bowls and pleasant at the table, but it needs hand washing and should not soak. Steel goes in the dishwasher and shrugs off vinegar dressing, but it can mark a soft bowl and clatters a little. If you own a wooden salad bowl, wooden servers are the natural partner.

Look for a stated finish on wood

Servers sit in your food, so it is fair to ask what the wood is coated with. OXO names food-grade mineral oil. Most others on this page say nothing, and we have not guessed. Wash any new wooden tool before using it.

A full salad in a dark wooden bowl on a wooden board
A deep bowl needs servers with some reach.

Fork and spoon, hands or tongs

A fork and spoon suit most salads: the fork holds, the spoon carries dressing and small pieces. Salad hands lift the most leaves in one go, but they have little reach. Tongs work with one hand, so they suit buffets. Two spoons, one with a gap, help when there is a lot of dressing.

Think about storage and care

Nesting heads and short shapes take up less drawer space. For wood, follow the maker’s care line. Totally Bamboo says never to soak its olive wood pair, so go by the care notes that come with yours.

How to dress and toss a salad

Dry your leaves well first, since dressing slides off wet greens. Our salad spinner guide covers that step. Use a bowl larger than you think you need, so there is room to turn everything without spilling.

Put the dressing in the bowl first, or pour it around the sides, then slide the servers down to the bottom and lift up through the salad. Turn the bowl a little and repeat. Add heavy pieces such as beans, corn or cheese last so they do not sink. Then serve from the top, and bring the bowl to the table.

How we chose these eight salad servers

We looked at what a working kitchen looks at in any serving tool: reach, what touches the food, how it cleans and who makes it. We have not used these products ourselves. We searched for independent reviews and did not find a major published test of salad servers or of these sets, so each pick rests on the Amazon listing, the maker’s own details and the maker’s standing. We note where a listing is thin or contradicts itself.

Because these are food-contact tools, we kept to established makers and left out the many low-cost sets from sellers we could not identify. Each pick was in stock when we wrote this. We also searched CPSC’s recall database for each maker and found no recall naming these servers.

Salad server questions, answered

What is the difference between salad servers and salad tongs?

Salad servers are usually a separate fork and spoon used with two hands, which is better for tossing. Salad tongs are one hinged tool used with one hand, which is better for serving at a buffet.

Are wooden salad servers better than metal?

Neither is better for every kitchen. Wood is gentler on bowls and quieter, while steel is easier to clean. Choose by your bowl and by whether you want to use the dishwasher.

How long should salad servers be?

About 10 inches suits most medium bowls, and 11 to 13 inches suits large or deep ones. Check that the handle stays above the rim when the head is on the bottom of your bowl.

How do you care for wooden salad servers?

Wash them by hand, dry them soon after, and do not soak them. All the wooden sets here carry a hand-wash note or give no dishwasher rating. Follow the maker’s own care instructions for your pair.

What are salad hands?

Short wooden paddles that you hold in each hand to scoop and toss. They lift a lot of leaves at once and suit wide bowls, but they do not reach far.

The salad servers we would put on the table

Start with the OXO beechwood pair. It is simple, and it tells you what is on the wood. Choose the WMF if the dishwasher matters more. For the rest of the table, see our serving utensils guide, or our picks for serving bowls.
