Copita, Port Glass or Tulip? How to Buy the Best Sherry Glasses

Eight sherry and dessert wine glasses compared by size, shape and care, with each maker's position on lead, from true copitas to roomy port glasses.

A small pour of golden wine.

Sherry has its own glass, or rather it has a few. The traditional choice is the copita, a small tulip that narrows toward the rim. You’ll also see small schooner shapes, port glasses and plain white wine glasses used in its place. Sherry is an adult, after-work kind of drink, poured in small amounts, and a good one goes well with salty snacks and almonds.

Very few makers sell a glass with “sherry” on the label, so this list is short and includes a couple of port glasses, which we flag. Our main wine glass guide covers everyday stemware. This page is for small pours of fortified and dessert wine.

Quick verdict: which sherry glass to buy

Buy the Schott Zwiesel Bar Special Sherry set. It’s the one glass here that a major maker sells specifically for sherry, in a set of six in non-lead Tritan crystal, and it goes in the dishwasher. If you want more room for the aroma, the 7.75-ounce Stölzle Lausitz Weinland names sherry too. To try a true copita, start with a single Glencairn.

Our picks for the best sherry glasses

Capacities, sizes and care come from each maker’s Amazon listing, and we say when a listing leaves something out. We have not used these products ourselves. For every crystal glass, we name who is making the lead statement. Five of the eight listings name sherry. The other three are after-dinner and port glasses, and we say so.

1. Schott Zwiesel Bar Special Sherry Glasses, 4 oz, Set of 6 – Sold for Sherry, in Tritan

Best overallSCHOTT ZWIESEL Bar Special Sherry Glass (Set of 6)

This is the plainest answer to the question. Schott Zwiesel sells it as a sherry glass and describes it as a digestif glass with room for aroma, especially for fine sherry. It holds about 4 ounces and stands 7.4 inches tall on a long stem, with a 2.3-inch diameter.

It’s Tritan crystal, made in Germany, and the maker group describes Tritan as a non-lead material of titanium and zirconium oxide that resists chipping and breakage. The listing says it’s dishwasher safe, and a slim stem like this one benefits from a tougher material.

There is one caution. The wine site Invinic warns on its blog that a glass that’s too narrow can keep you from appreciating a sherry’s bouquet. With 4 ounces of room, keep your pour small and leave space above the wine. If aroma is your priority, look at the larger Stölzle next.

Why we like it

  • Sold specifically for sherry.
  • Non-lead Tritan crystal, per the maker group.
  • Set of six.
  • Dishwasher safe.

2. Stölzle Lausitz Weinland Port Wine Glasses, 7.75 oz, Set of 6 – More Room for Aroma

Best roomy bowlStölzle Lausitz Weinland Port Wine Glasses Crystal Glass 7.75 oz Set Of 6

Stölzle calls this a port glass, but its listing says outright that it’s meant for sweet red and white wines, port or sherry. It’s the most flexible glass on the page. The 7.75-ounce bowl gives you plenty of space above a small pour, and that’s what Invinic’s advice points toward.

The maker says it’s lead-free crystal, made in Germany and dishwasher safe, with a seamless stem and a sturdy base. Product dimensions put it at about 6.7 inches tall and 2.7 inches wide. You get a set of six.

It won’t look like a traditional copita, and a very small pour will look lost in it. But if you plan to drink port and dessert wines along with sherry, one roomy glass makes sense.

Why we like it

  • Listing names sherry, port and sweet wines.
  • Lead-free crystal, per the maker’s listing.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • Set of six.

3. Glencairn Nosing Copita With Tasting Cap, Single Glass – A True Copita Shape

Best true copitaGLENCAIRN Whiskey Copita Glass and Tasting Cap in Gift Carton

Glencairn is known for its whisky glass, and this is its copita, a small tulip that blenders use for nosing. The listing says it can be used for both whisky and sherry, and it’s listed at 5.7 ounces. It comes with a small tasting cap, which traps the aromas while the glass sits.

Glencairn says it’s lead-free crystal and dishwasher safe. The box holds just one glass, so this is a way to try the shape or to give a small gift. Buying a table’s worth would take several boxes.

The listing is aimed at whisky drinkers, so don’t expect any sherry guidance in the box. Still, the shape is the right one, and a named glassmaker is behind it.

Why we like it

  • A true copita shape.
  • Listing names sherry.
  • Lead-free crystal, per the listing.
  • Tasting cap included.

4. Spiegelau Authentis Digestive Glasses, 6 oz, Set of 4 – A Slim After-Dinner Stem

Best after-dinner glassSpiegelau 4 Piece Authentis Digestive Wine Glasses

Spiegelau sells this as a 6-ounce after-dinner wine glass. The listing doesn’t name sherry, and we want to be clear about that, but the size and purpose fit, so we think it’s a fair choice for oloroso or a sweet style served after a meal.

It’s non-leaded crystal, made in Germany and dishwasher safe, according to the listing. At 7.4 inches tall and 2.4 inches wide, it has a long stem and a slim bowl.

The seller when we checked was Amazon’s German marketplace, so returns may take a little longer to sort out. The set has four glasses.

Why we like it

  • Non-leaded crystal, per Spiegelau’s listing.
  • Made in Germany.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • A middle size between copita and port.

5. Glassique Cadeau Tasting Copitas, 7 oz, Set of 6 – Short Stems in a Gift Box

Best gift setGLASSIQUE CADEAU Port and Dessert Wine

Glassique Cadeau is a little-known brand, so there’s less behind it than the makers above, but its listing is specific. This 7-ounce, 5.9-inch tulip is meant to be filled to the widest part, which the brand gives as 3 to 4 ounces of fortified wine. It names port, sherry and Madeira.

The brand says it’s hand-blown from lead-free crystal and calls it dishwasher friendly. That statement comes from the brand’s own listing, not from a maker with a long public record, so weigh it accordingly. Hand-blown glass can show small bubbles and variations, as the listing itself points out.

The set comes in a gift box with a shaped cloth for storage and a few tips on the back. It’s a nicely packaged present, if a less documented one.

Why we like it

  • Tulip shape with sherry named.
  • Gift box and storage cloth.
  • Clear pour guidance on the listing.
  • Set of six.

Key specifications

Model Port Glasses
Material Hand-blown lead-free crystal, per the brand
Capacity 7 oz

Lead statement Lead-free, per the brand’s own listing

Why we recommend it

It suits gift buyers who want a tulip-shaped set in a good box.

Skip it if you want a long-established maker behind the lead statement.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Attractive gift box
  • Copita-style shape
  • Set of six

Cons

  • Thin public record for the brand
  • Hand-blown, so small flaws are possible

6. Godinger Shannon Cut Crystal Sherry and Port Glasses, Set of 4 – A Vintage Cut Look

Best vintage lookGodinger Cordial Glasses Set of 4

If your idea of a sherry glass comes from a grandmother’s china cabinet, this one is for you. Godinger’s Shannon pattern has crisscross diamond cuts and teardrop cuts around a small bowl, on a knopped stem and round foot. The listing calls it a cordial glass for sherry and port, and it stands about 3.5 inches tall.

The listing says it’s non-leaded crystal. It doesn’t give a reliable capacity or say how to wash it, so we’d assume hand washing. A cut pattern will also hide the color of the wine, which is part of the pleasure of sherry.

The seller when we checked was a third party, not Godinger itself. Check the listing and the returns terms before you buy.

Why we like it

  • Listing names sherry and port.
  • Non-leaded crystal, per the listing.
  • A traditional cut pattern.

Key specifications

Model 21653

Why we recommend it

It suits a traditional table or a gift for someone who loves vintage-style cut glass.

Skip it if you want to see the color of the wine or need clear capacity and care details.

Pros

  • Classic cut look

7. Schott Zwiesel Bar Special Siza Port Glasses, 8 oz, Set of 6 – An Institute-Approved Port Glass

Best if you also drink portSCHOTT ZWIESEL Bar Special Port Wine Glass (Set of 6)

This is a port glass, and we include it for readers who drink both. Schott Zwiesel says it’s a four-sided stemmed glass with a dimple, designed by the Portuguese architect Alvaro Siza and authorized by Portugal’s Port Wine Institute. The listing doesn’t mention sherry.

It holds about 8 ounces and stands 6.6 inches tall, in the same Tritan crystal as our top pick. It’s made in Germany, and the listing says it’s dishwasher safe. A set of six makes it easy to set a table for a group.

The four-sided shape is unusual. Buy it because you like port and the design, then use it for sherry as well, rather than the other way round.

Why we like it

  • Designed by Alvaro Siza, per the maker.
  • Authorized by the Port Wine Institute, per the maker.
  • Non-lead Tritan crystal.
  • Dishwasher safe.

Key specifications

Model 0023.113427
Material Tritan crystal
Capacity About 8 oz
Count 6
Dimensions 6.6 in tall, 2.8 in wide
Dishwasher safe Yes
Made in Germany
Lead statement Non-lead Tritan, per the maker group

Why we recommend it

It suits port drinkers who pour sherry now and then and want one shared glass.

Skip it if you only drink sherry, because the first pick is the better fit.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Distinctive design
  • Durable material claims
  • Set of six

Cons

  • Listing doesn’t name sherry
  • Unusual four-sided shape

8. Riedel Vinum Port Glasses, Set of 2 – A Machine-Made Classic

Best from a wine specialistRiedel Vinum Port - Set of 2

Riedel’s Vinum line dates to 1986, and Riedel says it was the first machine-made collection shaped by the character of the wine. This one is made for port, to highlight fruit, aroma and sweetness. The listing doesn’t mention sherry, so count it as a close cousin that works for sweet styles, not a dedicated glass.

It stands 6.6 inches tall and is 2.9 inches wide. Riedel’s recommended pour is only 40 milliliters, about 1.35 ounces, which is a good reminder of how little fortified wine you need. The listing doesn’t give a total capacity. It’s dishwasher safe and comes as a pair.

Riedel’s FAQ says it has made only crystal glass since 2015, a material that “does not use lead oxide as a principal ingredient.” We found no explicit lead-free statement from the maker.

Why we like it

  • Long-running line from a wine glass specialist.
  • Dishwasher safe.
  • Clear guidance on a small pour.

Key specifications

Model 6416/60
Material Crystal glass
Capacity 40 ml recommended pour (about 1.35 oz)
Count 2
Dimensions 6.6 in tall, 2.9 in wide
Dishwasher safe Yes

Lead statement No explicit lead-free statement found; see above

Why we recommend it

It suits fans of port and sweet sherry who already like Riedel’s approach to shape.

Skip it if you need more than two glasses or a clear lead-free statement from the maker.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Respected maker
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Designed around fortified wine

Cons

  • Only two glasses
  • Listing doesn’t name sherry
  • No explicit lead-free statement

How to choose a sherry glass

Don’t go too small. The little thimble-size glasses sold for sherry don’t do it many favors. The wine site Invinic writes on its blog that drinking from too narrow a glass keeps you from appreciating the bouquet. It suggests a thin tulip-shaped white wine glass, a Champagne flute or, better still, a thin copita with a wide shape and an inward taper.

Look for a taper. The point of a tulip is that the bowl narrows toward the top and collects the aroma. That’s more useful than a pretty stem. A straight-sided cordial glass won’t do the same job.

Keep the pour small. Sherry is a fortified wine, usually poured in small amounts, and Glassique Cadeau’s guidance of 3 to 4 ounces at the widest point is on the generous side. Please drink responsibly, and check the bottle for serving temperature.

A white wine glass is a fair fallback. If you already own thin white wine glasses, you may not need to buy anything. You can try sherry in those first and see if you want a dedicated glass. Our wine glass guide has good all-purpose options.

A small cut glass on a stem standing on a dark table

Check what stands behind the crystal. Schott Zwiesel’s maker group, Stölzle, Spiegelau and Glencairn’s listing all state lead-free or non-lead material. Godinger’s and Glassique Cadeau’s statements come from their listings, and those sellers have less public detail. Riedel’s position is narrower, as noted in its pick. Antique cut glasses sold as sherry glasses are a different matter, since older crystal may be leaded, and we don’t cover them here.

How we picked these eight sherry glasses

We looked for glasses whose listings name sherry, then added after-dinner and port glasses from established makers where the size and purpose fit, and we label those plainly. We left out restaurant case packs, and listings that said only “crystal” without any lead statement. Sources were the Amazon listings and Invinic’s blog post. We have not used these glasses ourselves, so the picks rest on the listing and maker details.

Sherry glass questions, answered

What is a copita?

A copita is a small tulip-shaped glass that narrows at the rim. Glencairn’s nosing copita on this page is a good example, and it’s also a favorite shape for tasting whisky.

Can I use a port glass for sherry?

Yes, for most purposes. Stölzle’s Weinland port glass names sherry on its own listing. Riedel’s and Schott Zwiesel’s port glasses don’t, but the size is similar.

What’s a good dessert wine glass?

A small tulip of about 4 to 8 ounces works well. The Spiegelau and the Stölzle on this page are both sold for after-dinner or sweet wines.

How much sherry should I pour?

Keep it small and leave room above the wine. Riedel’s port guidance is about 1.35 ounces, and Glassique Cadeau’s is 3 to 4 ounces. The right amount depends on the glass.

Are sherry glasses dishwasher safe?

The Schott Zwiesel, Stölzle, Glencairn, Spiegelau and Riedel listings say yes, and Glassique Cadeau calls its glass dishwasher friendly. Godinger’s doesn’t say, so wash those by hand.

Our final pick for a sherry glass

The Schott Zwiesel Bar Special is our first choice because it’s a dedicated sherry glass from a maker with a clear material statement. If you’d like more room for aroma, buy the Stölzle Weinland.
