Filter 1 to Filter A: The Best Water Filter for Whirlpool Refrigerator

The best water filter for Whirlpool refrigerator owners: match your everydrop number and color, see what each states, and when a compatible makes sense.

Whirlpool has done something sensible with its filters. The everydrop line gives each one a number or letter and a color, and it covers Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana and JennAir refrigerators. If you know your number, you know your filter.

The picks below are not choices in the usual sense, since your fridge takes just one of these. They are a map: which number you have, what it states, and what your options are if the genuine one is not to hand. We keep to what each listing says, for the water and ice that end up in everything from a glass at dinner to a pitcher of agua fresca.

Quick verdict: which Whirlpool filter to buy

The best water filter for Whirlpool refrigerator owners is the genuine everydrop with your number and color: Filter 4 for a UKF8001 fridge, or Filter A, 2, 3 or 5 to match your old cartridge. All state NSF 42, 53 and 401. For Filter 1, see the everydrop in our main guide, or the Whirlpool WHR1RXD1 label below. Choose a compatible only if the genuine one is not available, and know what you give up.

Five everydrop filters at a glance

All five are genuine and share the same three standards; what differs is the slot and the listed reductions. All eight filters are reviewed in full below.

Find your everydrop number

Pull the old filter and look for a number or letter, a color and a part code such as EDR4RXD1. Whirlpool says to choose the package matching the number or letter and color of your filter. Your manual, or the model number inside the fridge, gets you the same answer on Whirlpool’s site.

You may also see older codes. Compatible listings tie UKF8001 to Filter 4, 4396841 and 4396710 to Filter 3, and 4396508 to Filter 5. W10295370A goes with Filter 1. A label like WHR, KAD or P4RFWB can belong to the same slot under a brand-specific name, so compare numbers before you assume you need something new.

What the certifications tell you, and what they do not

Filter listings throw around a lot of numbers, so it helps to read them as the listings themselves explain them. Amazon Basics describes NSF/ANSI 42 as covering chlorine, taste and odor, and 372 as covering lead-free materials. Waterdrop describes 53 as covering reductions such as lead and mercury, and 401 as covering substances such as bisphenol A and some pharmaceuticals. A filter with only 42 and 372 is a taste filter with lead-free parts. It is not making the claims a 53 filter makes.

Also look at who is certifying. Some listings name NSF International or IAPMO R&T, some name neither, and some say only “certified”. The everydrop titles state NSF 42, 53 and 401, while the Whirlpool-label WHR1RXD1 says only “NSF Certified”. We report each claim as it is stated and have not confirmed compatible brands’ certificates in a directory ourselves. If a claim matters to you, look the model up in the certifier’s own listing before you buy. None of this tells you what is in your own water; your water utility’s annual report is the place to start.

Our picks for the best water filter for Whirlpool refrigerator owners

Five everydrop filters come first, then the Whirlpool label for Filter 1, and last two compatibles from brands that state what they certify. Our main guide covers everydrop Filter 1 itself.

1. everydrop Filter 4 by Whirlpool – For UKF8001 Fridges

Best for Filter 4everydrop by Whirlpool Ice & Water Refrigerator Filter 4

Filter 4, the green package, is part EDR4RXD1 and the everydrop that replaces the older UKF8001 number used on Maytag and Whirlpool fridges. Compatible listings tie those two numbers together, so if your old cartridge says UKF8001, this is the genuine one to look at.

The title states NSF 42, 53 and 401, and Whirlpool says it is certified to reduce 32 potentially harmful contaminants, including 99 percent of microplastics. It installs with a twist. Whirlpool rates it for six months or 200 gallons.

Notice that 32 is far lower than Filter A’s 75. That is not a reason to choose differently; you cannot, since your fridge decides. It does show why you should read the number for your own filter rather than a brand-wide headline.

Why we like it

  • NSF 42, 53 and 401 stated in the title
  • Twist-in install (listing)
  • Official filter for five brands
  • Sold by Amazon when we checked

Key specifications

Part number Filter 4 (EDR4RXD1)
Fits (as stated) Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, JennAir fridges that take this number
Install style Twist-in
Certifications (as stated) NSF 42, 53, 401 (listing)
Filter life 6 months or 200 gal
Genuine or compatible Genuine everydrop
Pack size 1
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits owners of Whirlpool-family fridges whose old filter says Filter 4, EDR4RXD1 or UKF8001.

Skip it if your number is different. Everydrop numbers and colors do not interchange.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Maker’s own part
  • Three standards in the title
  • Color-coded package

Cons

  • Fewer listed contaminants than some others in the line
  • Warranty not stated
  • Filter number locked to your fridge

2. everydrop Filter A by Whirlpool – The Longest Contaminant List

Best for Filter Aeverydrop by Whirlpool Ice & Water Refrigerator Filter A

Filter A, part EDRARXD1, comes in a blue package, and it lists the most of any everydrop here: certified to reduce 75 contaminants, including 99 percent of microplastics. The title names NSF 42, 53 and 401, and it names Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid.

Installation is a twist, and Whirlpool says to pick the package that matches the letter or number and the color of your filter. That is a nicely simple rule, and it is the main reason this line is easy to buy.

Whirlpool also warns that non-genuine filters may cause damage to your refrigerator. Other fridge makers say much the same, but a few compatibles in this slot come from brands we could not identify, and we did not include them here.

Why we like it

  • Certified to reduce 75 contaminants (listing)
  • NSF 42, 53 and 401 in the title
  • Twist-in install
  • Warranty field present on the listing

Key specifications

Part number Filter A (EDRARXD1)
Fits (as stated) Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, JennAir fridges that take this number
Install style Twist-in
Certifications (as stated) NSF 42, 53, 401 (listing)
Filter life 6 months or 200 gal
Genuine or compatible Genuine everydrop
Pack size 1
Warranty “Warranty” listed; term not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits owners whose current filter says Filter A or EDRARXD1.

Skip it if your old filter is a numbered one. Letter A is its own part.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Longest listed reductions here
  • Simple match by color and letter
  • Sold by Amazon when we checked

Cons

  • Only fits Filter A fridges
  • Warranty term not stated
  • Claims are the maker’s

3. everydrop Filter 3 by Whirlpool – Push-In Style

Best for Filter 3everydrop by Whirlpool Ice & Water Refrigerator Filter 3

Filter 3 is the aqua package, part EDR3RXD1, and the listing says it reduces 74 contaminants. It has the same NSF 42, 53 and 401 statement as the rest of the line. It differs in how it goes in: the listing describes a push-in install rather than a twist.

The warranty field on this listing reads two years, the longest warranty detail in the everydrop group, though the field is all we have to go on, and we would not read too much into it for a part you replace every six months.

Compatible listings for this slot tie it to the older 4396841 and 4396710 numbers, so check those if your label is older.

Why we like it

  • Reduces 74 contaminants (listing)
  • Push-in install
  • NSF 42, 53 and 401 in the title
  • Warranty field reads two years

Key specifications

Part number Filter 3 (EDR3RXD1)
Fits (as stated) Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, JennAir fridges that take this number
Install style Push-in
Certifications (as stated) NSF 42, 53, 401 (listing)
Filter life 6 months or 200 gal
Genuine or compatible Genuine everydrop
Pack size 1
Warranty 2 year manufacturer (listing field)

Why we recommend it

It suits owners whose current filter says Filter 3, EDR3RXD1, or an older number the old label ties to it.

Skip it if your fridge takes a twist-in filter. Check the number rather than guessing by fit.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Maker’s own part
  • Long reduction list
  • Simple push-in

Cons

  • Only for this number
  • Older part number confusion
  • Warranty is a listing field only

4. everydrop Filter 2 by Whirlpool – For Filter 2 Fridges

Best for Filter 2everydrop by Whirlpool Ice & Water Refrigerator Filter 2

Filter 2, the orange package, is part EDR2RXD1. Whirlpool says it reduces 70 contaminants, and its title states NSF 42, 53 and 401 with a six-month life.

Like the others in the line, it has a coconut shell carbon core and what Whirlpool calls triple filtration. It installs with a twist. The listing shows few differences from its siblings, other than the number and color, and that is really the point: these are the same idea in different shapes for different fridges.

Whirlpool also sells this fit under its own name, as WHR2RXD1, with a title that lists 28 certified reductions. If you see both, the everydrop line is the better documented of the two.

Why we like it

  • NSF 42, 53 and 401 in the title
  • Reduces 70 contaminants (listing)
  • Twist-in install
  • Six-month life stated

Key specifications

Part number Filter 2 (EDR2RXD1)
Fits (as stated) Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, JennAir fridges that take this number
Install style Twist-in
Certifications (as stated) NSF 42, 53, 401 (listing)
Filter life 6 months or 200 gal
Genuine or compatible Genuine everydrop
Pack size 1
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits owners whose current filter says Filter 2 or EDR2RXD1.

Skip it if your label says WHR or KAD and you are not sure; compare the number and check your manual first.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Three standards in the title
  • Sold by Amazon when we checked
  • Easy color match

Cons

  • Only for this number
  • Warranty not stated
  • Claims are the maker’s

5. everydrop Filter 5 by Whirlpool – For Filter 5 Fridges

Best for Filter 5everydrop by Whirlpool Ice & Water Refrigerator Filter 5

Filter 5, the pink package, is part EDR5RXD1. Its reduction list is the shortest in the everydrop line at 28 contaminants, but the standards are the same: NSF 42, 53 and 401. It installs with a twist and Whirlpool rates it at six months or 200 gallons.

As with Filter 4, the lower count is a reminder to read your own filter’s claim rather than the brand-wide one. It is still the maker’s part for that slot, and that is the question most owners have.

Compatible listings connect it to the older 4396508 number, including ICEPURE and Waterdrop Plus, if your label is an older one.

Why we like it

  • NSF 42, 53 and 401 in the title
  • Twist-in install
  • Six months or 200 gallons
  • Older 4396508 number connected by compatibles

Key specifications

Part number Filter 5 (EDR5RXD1)
Fits (as stated) Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, JennAir fridges that take this number
Install style Twist-in
Certifications (as stated) NSF 42, 53, 401 (listing)
Filter life 6 months or 200 gal
Genuine or compatible Genuine everydrop
Pack size 1
Warranty “Warranty” listed; term not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits owners whose filter says Filter 5, EDR5RXD1 or the older number linked to it.

Skip it if you are hoping for the longest reduction list. That depends on your fridge’s number, not your choice.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Maker’s own part
  • Same three standards
  • Sold by Amazon when we checked

Cons

  • Shortest reduction list in the line
  • Warranty term not stated
  • Only for this number

6. Whirlpool Filter 1 WHR1RXD1 – The Whirlpool-Label Version

Best for Filter 1Whirlpool Refrigerator Ice & Water Filter 1

Filter 1 is the most common number in this family, and the everydrop version is in our refrigerator water filter guide. This is the Whirlpool-label version for the same slot, WHR1RXD1. It says it is made by the makers of your refrigerator, certified to reduce 99 percent of lead and up to 97 percent of chlorine, with a six-month change.

The listing has a problem you should know about. Its title says NSF certified to reduce 28 contaminants, while its features say 70. We cannot tell which is right, and it does not name which NSF standards it means.

So this is genuine, simple and sold by Amazon, but the everydrop Filter 1 in the main guide is the better documented choice, with NSF 42, 53 and 401 stated. Choose this one if that version is out of stock, or if you see it at a better deal.

Why we like it

  • Maker’s own part for the Filter 1 slot
  • Sold by Amazon when we checked
  • Lead and chlorine claims stated by the maker
  • Six-month change interval

Key specifications

Part number WHR1RXD1
Fits (as stated) Whirlpool fridges that take Filter 1
Install style Not stated
Certifications (as stated) “NSF Certified”; standards not named (listing)
Filter life 6 months
Genuine or compatible Genuine Whirlpool
Pack size 1
Warranty “No” (listing field)

Why we recommend it

It suits a Filter 1 owner who wants a genuine part and sees this one first.

Skip it if you can get the everydrop Filter 1. Its listing names its standards, and this one does not.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Genuine maker part
  • Simple seller
  • Fits a very common slot

Cons

  • Title and features disagree on the count
  • Standards not named
  • Warranty field says no

7. Amazon Basics UKF8001 Replacement – A Simple Taste Filter for Filter 4

Best house-brand optionAmazon Basics Replacement Maytag UKF8001 Refrigerator Water Filter Cartridge

Amazon Basics sells a replacement for the Maytag UKF8001, the same slot as everydrop Filter 4. Its statement is plain and more specific than most compatibles: tested and certified by NSF International, in model EFF-6007S, against NSF/ANSI Standard 42 for chlorine, taste and odor, with NSF/ANSI 372 for lead-free material.

That is the whole claim. It names no NSF 53 or 401, so it is a step down in claims from the everydrop, not a like-for-like swap. Its coconut shell carbon and leak-proof fit are the seller’s description.

Whirlpool warns that damage caused by non-genuine filters is not covered under its warranty, per its everydrop Value listing, so weigh that if your fridge is still in warranty.

Why we like it

  • NSF International named, with a model number
  • NSF 42 and 372 stated
  • Sold by Amazon
  • Clear about its narrow claim

Key specifications

Part number EFF-6007-1-S
Fits (as stated) In place of Maytag UKF8001 (Filter 4 slot)
Install style Easy install (listing)
Certifications (as stated) NSF International: NSF/ANSI 42, 372 (listing)
Filter life Not stated
Genuine or compatible Compatible
Pack size 1
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits a Filter 4 owner who mainly wants better-tasting water and ice.

Skip it if you want NSF 53 reductions or your fridge is under warranty. The genuine everydrop Filter 4 is the safer pick.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Certifier and model named
  • Simple seller
  • Honest scope

Cons

  • Taste standard only
  • Filter life not stated
  • Not backed by Whirlpool

8. Instapure EDR8D1 Compatible Filter – Made in USA for Filter 8

Best compatibleEveryDrop EDR8D1 Compatible Refrigerator Water Filter Made in USA

Filter 8 fridges are less well served; we found no genuine everydrop EDR8D1 in stock when we searched. Instapure’s compatible fits in place of it, and the listing says it fits 597 models from EveryDrop, Kenmore, Whirlpool and others. It comes as a 2 pack.

It claims the broadest set of standards here: NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 372, 401 and P473, plus CSA B483.1. The listing says it uses 0.5 micron carbon block, lasts up to six months or 300 gallons, and is made in the USA.

As with the other Instapure filters we looked at, no certifier is named on the listing, so these are the seller’s claims. Check the directory listing if that matters to your decision, and read Whirlpool’s warranty warning above.

Why we like it

  • Broadest standards list here (listing)
  • Made in USA (listing)
  • Six months or 300 gallons
  • 2 pack

Key specifications

Part number REF-IPW-4-2PK
Fits (as stated) In place of EveryDrop EDR8D1 (Filter 8)
Install style Not stated
Certifications (as stated) NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 372, 401, P473; CSA B483.1 (listing; certifier not named)
Filter life 6 months or 300 gal
Genuine or compatible Compatible
Pack size 2
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits a Filter 8 owner for whom the genuine part is hard to find.

Skip it if you can find the genuine EDR8D1 and prefer it. Whirlpool warns against non-genuine parts.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Broad claims
  • Longer stated gallons
  • Two filters

Cons

  • Certifier not named
  • Not backed by Whirlpool
  • Newer listing

How to choose a Whirlpool refrigerator filter

1. Start with the number and color

It is the easiest rule in this category, and the maker asks you to follow it. Everything else on this page comes second.

2. Decide genuine or compatible

Whirlpool warns that non-genuine filters may cause damage, and its everydrop Value listing says damage from non-genuine filters is not covered by its warranty. That is worth weighing while your fridge is in warranty.

3. Compare value lines carefully

There is also an everydrop Value Filter 4, listed as NSF certified for lead, chlorine, taste and odor, but it does not name the standard numbers. If you want the full NSF 42, 53 and 401 claim, the standard line is the one that states it.

4. Read your own filter’s reductions

The listed count runs from 28 to 75 across this line. A count is only useful in terms of what is in your own water, and your utility’s annual report will tell you more than a number on a box.

5. Change on time

Whirlpool says every six months or 200 gallons. Set a reminder, or use your fridge’s filter light, and run a little water through after a change.

A white refrigerator with brass handles.

How we picked these eight Whirlpool filters

We started with the genuine everydrop line, used only the parts that were plainly in stock, and added compatibles that name a standard. That gives six parts from one maker, which is the honest result for a brand-specific page: each is a different fit, not a color of the same filter. Everydrop Filter 1 itself is on our main guide, so it is not repeated here, and we say so. We did not test these filters or confirm certificates in a directory. We also checked the CPSC recall database by brand and found no recall for these water filters.

Whirlpool water filter questions, answered

Is everydrop made by Whirlpool?

Yes, the listings call it “everydrop by Whirlpool” and describe it as the official filter for Whirlpool, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana and JennAir.

How do I know which everydrop filter I need?

Match the number or letter and color on your old filter. Your manual or the fridge’s model number will also tell you.

Do everydrop filters remove lead?

The everydrop listings say they are certified to reduce heavy metals among other contaminants, and the Whirlpool-label Filter 1 listing says 99 percent of lead. Check the performance data sheet for your own filter.

How often should I change a Whirlpool filter?

Every six months or 200 gallons, according to the everydrop listings.

Can I use a compatible filter in a Whirlpool refrigerator?

Many are sold for these fridges, and some state certifications. Whirlpool warns against them and says damage from non-genuine filters is not covered under its warranty.
