Slot Width in Inches: How to Choose the Best 4 Slot Wide Toaster

Eight four-slot toasters with wide slots, with each slot width as the maker states it, plus bagel settings, independent sides and warranties compared.

Close-up of golden-brown toasted bread slices on a plate
Golden-brown toasted bread, close up.

A four-slot toaster with wide slots solves two breakfast problems at once. Four separate slots mean four slices, or two split bagels, in one round, so a family is not eating in shifts. Wide slots mean thick bread, Texas toast, bagel halves and a split bolillo for molletes go in without being forced, and without the crust scorching against the elements.

This guide is the four-slot, wide-slot branch of our main guide to the best toaster. We picked eight four-slot toasters from Cuisinart, KitchenAid, Smeg, Hamilton Beach, Amazon Basics, BLACK+DECKER and BELLA, none of them in that guide or in our budget and bagel toaster guides. All eight have four separate slots, not two long ones. For each we give the slot width exactly as the maker or listing states it, and “Not stated” where it gives no figure, because “extra-wide” on its own tells you very little.

Quick verdict: which four-slot wide toaster to buy

The best 4 slot wide toaster for most kitchens is the Cuisinart 4-Slice Compact Toaster: slots stated as 1.5 inches wide, two independent sides, bagel, defrost and reheat settings, and a three-year limited warranty. Choose the KitchenAid 4-Slice Manual Lift Toaster for the most clearly described bagel setting, the Smeg 4-Slice Toaster for retro styling with stated 1.4-inch slots, or the Hamilton Beach Retro 4-Slice Toaster for an even single-slice mode. The Amazon Basics 4-Slice Toaster is the budget pick and gives its slots as 5.25 by 1.25 inches.

The table compares the five we would point most people toward. All eight toasters are reviewed in full after it.

Our picks for the best 4 slot wide toaster

These eight toasters all have four separate slots, usually split into two pairs with their own controls. Each review gives the slot width in the maker’s words, the bagel and other settings, how the toaster lifts short pieces, and one honest reason to skip it.

1. Cuisinart 4-Slice Compact Toaster – Stated 1.5-Inch Slots, Three-Year Cover

Best overallCuisinart 4 Slice Compact Toaster

Cuisinart is one of the few makers that puts a number on its slots: the listing gives 1.5-inch wide slots, enough for a split bagel or a thick slice of bread. The toaster is a compact four-slot design with dual independent toasting controls, so each pair of slots works as its own toaster and two people can toast different breads at different shades at the same time.

The functions are Toast, Bagel, Defrost, Reheat and Cancel, and a seven-setting shade dial covers light to dark. Reheat is useful in a busy kitchen: it warms toast that has gone cold without browning it further. A high lift lever raises the toast when it is finished, which helps with short pieces like English muffins.

There is a removable crumb tray and a cord wrap underneath. Cuisinart covers it with a limited three-year warranty, the longest of the four-slot toasters here along with the Cuisinart XL Slot model below.

Why we like it

  • Slots stated as 1.5 inches wide
  • Dual independent controls for each pair of slots
  • Bagel, defrost and reheat settings
  • Limited three-year warranty

Key specifications

Model CPT-142BKP1 (black)
Slots 4, two independent pairs
Slot width 1.5 inches
Shade settings 7
Bagel setting Yes; how it heats not stated
Other functions Defrost, reheat, cancel, high lift
Power Not stated
Warranty 3-year limited

Why we recommend it

It answers the question this page is about with a figure, adds two independent sides for a family, and has a long warranty for a four-slot toaster.

Skip it if you want a stainless steel body; Cuisinart sells this compact model as a plastic toaster in its white version, and the listing does not describe the housing.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Stated slot width
  • Reheat without re-browning
  • Three-year warranty

Cons

  • Bagel setting not described
  • Housing material not stated
  • Power not stated

2. KitchenAid 4-Slice Manual Lift Toaster – A Bagel Setting That Is Explained

Best bagel settingKitchenAid 4-Slice Manual Lift Toaster

KitchenAid’s KMT4115 has four extra-wide slots that the listing says take bagels, English muffins and thick breads. It gives no width in inches, but it does something most makers don’t: it explains its bagel setting. On Bagel, the heating element on one side reduces by 50%, so the cut side toasts while the outer side browns gently.

Dual independent controls let you toast two different breads at once, each at its own shade. The shade control has five settings, from 1 (light) to 5 (dark), fewer than most toasters here. The lift is manual: a high lift lever raises the bread so small pieces are easy to reach.

This is a current model and not one of the older ProLine toasters (models KPTT780 and KPTT890) covered by a 2005 recall, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The Amazon listing gives a one-year warranty.

Why we like it

  • Bagel setting cuts one side’s heat by 50%
  • Extra-wide slots for bagels, muffins and thick bread
  • Dual independent controls
  • High lift lever for small pieces

Key specifications

Slots 4, two independent pairs
Slot width Not stated (“extra-wide”)
Shade settings 5

Other functions Manual high lift

Why we recommend it

It suits a household where bagels are a regular breakfast and you want to know exactly what the bagel button does before you buy.

  • Clearly described bagel setting
  • Two independent sides
  • High lift for short pieces

Cons

  • No slot width in inches
  • Defrost and reheat not listed
  • Five shade settings

3. Smeg 4-Slice Toaster – Retro Steel With 1.4-Inch Slots

Best designSMEG 4 Slice Toaster TSF03

Smeg’s TSF03 is the four-slot version of its 1950s-style toaster, in stainless steel with a painted finish (red, in this listing). The listing gives the slots as extra-wide 1.4 inches, and says they fit bagels, Texas toast and artisan bread.

It has dual independent controls, six browning levels and one-touch Bagel, Defrost and Reheat functions with backlit buttons. The listing gives the power as 1,800 watts. Two stainless steel crumb trays slide out, one for each side. Smeg also sells a sandwich rack, TSSR01, that fits this toaster for grilled sandwiches; it is sold separately.

The Amazon listing gives a one-year warranty, while Best Buy lists the US TSF03 models with a 24-month limited warranty, so check which applies to your seller. It is a heavy, wide toaster: Best Buy gives about 11 by 15 inches for the US version.

Why we like it

  • Slots stated as 1.4 inches wide
  • Bagel, defrost and reheat functions
  • Two independent sides and two crumb trays
  • Optional sandwich rack

Key specifications

Other functions Defrost, reheat, automatic pop-up

Warranty 1 year (Amazon); 24 months (Best Buy)

Why we recommend it

It suits a kitchen where the toaster lives on the counter and should look good, and where a stated slot width still matters.

Skip it if counter space is tight; it is one of the larger toasters here and the listing does not mention a high lift.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Stated slot width
  • Full set of functions
  • Steel body in several colors

Cons

  • Large footprint
  • Warranty terms differ by retailer
  • Six shade settings

4. Cuisinart 4-Slice XL Slot Toaster – Check Without Stopping

Best for checking toastCuisinart 4-Slice XL Slot Toaster

Cuisinart’s newer CPT-1800 is a stainless steel four-slot toaster that Cuisinart describes as having extra-wide XL slots for thick artisan bread, homemade loaves, bagels, English muffins and frozen waffles. Cuisinart gives no width in inches for this model, unlike the compact model above.

What sets it apart is the High-Lift QuickView lever. You can raise the toast to look at it, or to lift out a small piece, without stopping or restarting the cycle. Push-button controls cover Bagel (Cuisinart describes it as one-sided toasting), Defrost, Single Slice, +30 Seconds and Cancel, with seven shade settings.

There is a removable front crumb tray, built-in cord storage and automatic shut-off. Cuisinart backs it with a three-year limited warranty.

Why we like it

  • QuickView lift to check toast mid-cycle
  • One-sided bagel setting and +30 Seconds button
  • Single Slice setting
  • Three-year limited warranty

  • Check without restarting
  • Stainless steel housing
  • Three-year warranty

Cons

  • No slot width in inches
  • No reheat setting listed
  • Independent sides not mentioned

5. Hamilton Beach Retro 4-Slice Toaster – Even Toast From One Slice

Best for single slicesHamilton Beach Retro 4 Slice Toaster With Sure-Toast Technology

This Hamilton Beach toaster pairs a polished stainless retro body with four slots the listing describes as wide. It is the pick here for the household that toasts four slices on a Saturday but only one on a Tuesday.

Sure-Toast is the reason. One slice in a four-slot toaster often comes out uneven, and Hamilton Beach says its One Slice button gives balanced color and texture on both sides. The bagel function toasts the cut side and warms the outside, in Hamilton Beach’s words, and a defrost setting adds time for frozen bread and waffles. The title lists nine shades, a Cancel button and automatic shut-off.

Auto Boost lifts small pieces such as English muffins so they are easier to retrieve, per the listing. The listing gives no slot width in inches and does not say whether the two pairs of slots have separate controls. The warranty field reads 1-year limited.

Why we like it

  • One Slice button for even toasting
  • Bagel function toasts the cut side, warms the outside
  • Defrost setting for frozen bread
  • Nine shade settings

Key specifications

Model 24782G

Other functions One Slice, defrost, cancel, Auto Boost

Why we recommend it

It suits a family that toasts four slices on weekends but one slice on most weekdays, and wants that one slice even.

Skip it if you want a stated slot width or separate controls for each pair; this listing states neither.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Even single-slice toasting
  • Described bagel function
  • Defrost included

Cons

  • Slot width not stated
  • Independent sides not stated
  • One-year warranty

6. Amazon Basics 4-Slice Toaster – Full Slot Size Published

Budget pickAmazon Basics 4 Slice Toaster

Amazon’s own-brand four-slot toaster gives the most complete slot measurement of any toaster here: 5.25 inches long by 1.25 inches wide. That is narrower than the Cuisinart and Smeg, but the listing still says it fits thick bagels and artisan breads, and a published figure lets you compare it with the bread you actually buy.

There are seven browning levels and illuminated Cancel, Defrost and Bagel buttons. The listing gives the power as 1,500 watts. The crumb tray slides out from the rear, which is worth knowing if your toaster sits against a wall.

The listing does not describe how the bagel setting heats, does not mention a high lift or independent controls for each side, and does not state a warranty.

Why we like it

  • Slot size stated as 5.25 x 1.25 inches
  • Seven browning levels
  • Bagel, defrost and cancel buttons, illuminated
  • Stated 1,500 watts

Warranty Not stated in the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a family that needs four slots on a budget and wants to know the slot size before buying.

Skip it if your bread is very thick; at 1.25 inches its slots are the narrowest stated figure in this guide.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Published slot size
  • Seven shades
  • Low cost for four slots

Cons

  • Narrowest stated slots here
  • Warranty not stated
  • Rear crumb tray

7. BLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster – Two Shade Dials, Extra Lift

Simplest controlsBLACK+DECKER 4-Slice Toaster with Dual Shade Controls

BLACK+DECKER’s TR4900SSD is a plain stainless four-slot toaster with extra-wide slots that the listing says take bagels and thick breads. There is no figure for the width.

The controls are as simple as they get: two shade dials, one for each half of the toaster, each with seven settings. Extended levers give an extra lift so you can reach small pieces without putting your fingers near the heat. Pull-out crumb trays let you clear crumbs before they burn.

The listing names no bagel, defrost or reheat setting and gives no warranty term. It is a toaster for people who only ever want to toast.

Why we like it

  • Separate seven-setting dial for each half
  • Extra-lift levers
  • Pull-out crumb trays
  • Extra-wide slots for bagels and thick bread

Slimmest profilebella 4 Slice Toaster

BELLA’s model 17614 is a four-slot toaster with extra-wide slots that the listing says take breads, muffins and bagels. BELLA describes the body as slender, aimed at a crowded counter, with a matte finish and a stainless steel accent. No slot width is given.

There are six browning options, a Reheat function and a Cancel button. A high lift lever raises small breads such as English muffins, and the crumb tray is removable. For safety, BELLA lists automatic shut-off and an anti-jam feature, which is useful in a wide-slot toaster where a thick piece can wedge.

The listing names no bagel or defrost setting and states no warranty.

Why we like it

  • Slim body for a crowded counter
  • Anti-jam and automatic shut-off
  • High lift lever for English muffins
  • Reheat setting

How to choose a four-slot toaster with wide slots

Four slots and “extra-wide” are on almost every listing. These are the things that actually separate them.

1. A stated slot width

Only three of our picks give a number: Cuisinart’s compact model at 1.5 inches, Smeg at 1.4 inches and Amazon Basics at 1.25 by 5.25 inches. The rest say “extra-wide” or “wide.” If you toast thick sourdough, Texas toast or bagels, a figure of about 1.5 inches is the one to look for, and it is worth measuring a slice of the bread you buy most.

2. Four slots or two long ones

Every toaster here has four separate slots, which suit ordinary sandwich-size slices and bagel halves. A long-slot toaster takes four slices in two long slots and fits long artisan bread better; our main toaster guide covers one.

3. Independent sides

Most four-slot toasters work as two toasters side by side. Cuisinart’s compact model, KitchenAid, Smeg and BLACK+DECKER all list separate controls for each pair, so one person can toast a bagel while another toasts bread at a different shade.

4. A bagel setting that is described

KitchenAid (one side reduced by 50%), Hamilton Beach (toasts the cut side, warms the outside) and Cuisinart’s XL Slot (one-sided) describe their bagel settings. The others either name one without saying how it works or do not list one.

5. Lift and warranty

A high lift or extra lift matters for English muffins, which sit low in a slot. And warranties range from three years (both Cuisinarts) to one year or nothing stated, a real difference for something used every day.

How we chose these eight toasters

We looked for four-slot toasters sold on Amazon US by identifiable makers, described as wide or extra-wide, and gave extra weight to those that state a slot width. We checked each toaster’s stock with Amazon’s product data before writing, and all eight were in stock. We left out every toaster in our main, budget and bagel toaster guides, including the Cuisinart CPT-180 and the KitchenAid 4-Slice Pro Line, so this page adds new options; we also left out long-slot toasters with only two slots, Breville and Smeg listings that were down to their last units or not yet available, and a Breville model whose listing appears to be written for the UK market. Specifications come from the brands’ Amazon listings, with Best Buy’s listing used for Smeg’s warranty and dimensions; our notes record which. We searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall database for every brand. We found no recall of any toaster named here; the toaster recalls we did find covered older models, including KitchenAid’s 2005 ProLine toasters, Hamilton Beach classic chrome two-slice toasters in 2011 and BLACK+DECKER models from 1998 to 2007. We have not used these toasters ourselves; where we describe how one works, it is the maker’s or the listing’s description.

Thick bread at a Mexican breakfast

Wide slots are not only for bagels. A split bolillo or telera toasted cut side in for molletes, a thick slice of pan de caja for a quick torta, or a slice of day-old bread for capirotada all go further in a toaster with room for them. Our guide to Mexican brunch has more on what a Mexican breakfast table holds, and how to reheat Mexican leftovers covers warming breads and tortillas. If bagels and English muffins are most of what you toast, see the best toaster for bagels and English muffins, and for lower-cost two- and four-slot models, our budget toaster picks.

Four-slot wide toaster questions, answered

How wide are extra-wide toaster slots?

Makers rarely say. Of the toasters here, Cuisinart’s compact model lists 1.5 inches, Smeg 1.4 inches and Amazon Basics 1.25 inches. “Extra-wide” with no figure can mean anything from just over a standard slot to a true bagel slot.

Is a four-slot toaster the same as a four-slice long-slot toaster?

No. A four-slot toaster has four short slots, usually in two independent pairs. A long-slot toaster has two long slots that each take two ordinary slices or one long one. Both toast four slices at once.

Can you toast just one slice in a four-slot toaster?

Yes. Toasters with independent sides heat only the pair you use. Hamilton Beach’s one-slice mode and Cuisinart’s Single Slice setting on its XL Slot model are made for a single piece.

Do four-slot toasters use more power?

Few listings say, so it is hard to compare. Smeg gives 1,800 watts and Amazon Basics 1,500 watts. Check your outlet if the toaster shares a circuit with a coffee maker or microwave.

Which way should a bagel face in a wide-slot toaster?

It depends on which side the toaster turns down on its bagel setting. KitchenAid, for example, says one element drops by 50% to brown the outer side gently, so the cut side faces the other element. Your manual shows which side is which.

Our final pick for four wide slots

Buy the Cuisinart 4-Slice Compact Toaster if you want stated 1.5-inch slots, two independent sides, a reheat setting and a three-year warranty. Choose the KitchenAid 4-Slice Manual Lift for a bagel setting described in detail, the Smeg 4-Slice for a steel toaster that stays on show, the Cuisinart XL Slot to check toast mid-cycle, or the Hamilton Beach Retro for even single slices. The Amazon Basics, BLACK+DECKER and BELLA toasters cover four slots for less.

For two-slot and long-slot toasters, see our main guide to the best toaster. And if you would rather someone else made breakfast or lunch, see the menu or call to order.
