Heated or Insulated? The Best Coffee Mug Keep Hot Picks

Seven mugs and warmers that keep coffee hot at home: the heated Ember, Cosori and Mr. Coffee warmers, and insulated YETI, Corkcicle, Stanley and Thermos.

A steel mug with a handle at a desk.

Coffee in an ordinary ceramic mug cools to lukewarm in well under an hour on a desk, and the microwave reheat that follows never tastes quite right. There are three ways to fix that without changing how you drink: a heated mug with a battery and a charging base, a vacuum-insulated mug that slows the heat loss, or a warmer plate that sits under the mug you already own.

This guide sits under our coffee mug guide and looks only at mugs for home and the desk that keep coffee hot. Each pick is labeled heated, insulated or warmer, because they work in very different ways. Every hold-time figure is the maker’s own, and where a maker gives no figure we say so. For lidded mugs built for the commute, see our separate coffee go mug guide.

Quick verdict: which mug keeps coffee hot

For most desks the best pick is the Ember Mug 2, 10 oz, a heated mug that holds coffee at a temperature you choose, up to 80 minutes off its coaster according to Ember’s listing and all day on it. With no electronics at all, the YETI Rambler 24 oz Stackable Mug is the big insulated mug to buy and the Corkcicle Classic Coffee Mug has the longest stated hold time, and the Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer is the simple, low-cost plate for a mug you already own.

Below are five standout picks side by side, then all seven in detail, then how to choose between heated, insulated and warmer.

Our picks for the best coffee mug keep hot

The seven picks fall into three groups. The heated mug (Ember) has a heating element and a battery and holds a set temperature. Warmers (Cosori, Mr. Coffee) are hot plates for the desk that slow cooling in a mug sitting on them. Insulated mugs (YETI, Corkcicle, Stanley, Thermos) have no power at all; a vacuum between two steel walls slows the heat loss, and a lid helps more. Three picks share a family name with mugs on our other coffee pages, and we say in each section why this one is different.

1. Ember Mug 2, 10 oz – Holds the Temperature You Set

Best overallEmber Temperature Control Smart Mug 2

Heated. Ember makes battery-heated mugs that hold a drink at a set temperature. Our coffee mug guide recommends the newer Ember Mug 3 in 14 ounces; the Mug 2 in 10 ounces is a different, smaller mug that Ember still sells, and it suits people who drink a regular cup rather than a large one.

Ember’s listing says the mug holds a drink between 120°F and 145°F, for up to 80 minutes on its battery or all day on the included charging coaster. Without the app it defaults to 135°F and remembers your last setting; with the Ember app you set the exact temperature and can get a notification. It wakes when hot liquid is poured in, sleeps when it has not moved for a while, and an LED shows when the drink has reached temperature.

Care is where the Mug 2 differs from the Mug 3. Ember says the Mug 2 is hand wash only and must not go in the dishwasher, though it is submersible up to 1 meter, so you can wash it in a full sink. It is a battery device: charge it only on its own coaster, as Ember directs.

Why we like it

  • Holds a set temperature from 120°F to 145°F (Ember)
  • All-day heat on the charging coaster
  • Works without the app at a 135°F default
  • Submersible to 1 meter for hand washing

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who sips one cup slowly at a desk and wants the last sip as hot as the first.

Skip it if you want to put your mug in the dishwasher; the Mug 2 is hand wash only.

2. Cosori Coffee Mug Warmer and Mug Set, 17 oz – Adjustable Plate, Matched Steel Mug

Best warmer setCosori Coffee Mug Warmer & Mug Set

Warmer. Cosori, the kitchen appliance brand, sells this as a pair: a flat stainless warming plate with a digital display, and a 17-ounce stainless steel mug with a lid, an insulated sleeve and a heat-resistant handle, built to sit on it.

The useful detail is in Cosori’s manual. The number on the display is the temperature of the plate, not of your coffee, so you set it higher than you want to drink. Cosori’s own example: with the plate at its top setting and hot coffee in the steel mug, the warmer keeps the coffee at 156°F or higher. The Amazon listing gives a setting range of 77–194°F, while the manual lists 77–230°F for the plate and up to 158°F for the drink, so expect the figures to vary by version. You can also use another heat-safe mug, which Cosori says should be thin with a flat bottom.

Cosori’s safety notes are plain: the lid’s hole is for a stirring spoon, not for drinking, so take the lid off to sip; do not put the steel mug in the microwave; do not immerse the warmer; and unplug it when not in use. The manual and listing do not mention an automatic shut-off. Cosori gives a one-year warranty.

Why we like it

  • Adjustable plate with a digital display
  • Cosori states coffee stays at 156°F or higher at the top setting
  • Matched 17-ounce steel mug with lid and sleeve
  • One-year warranty (Cosori)

Key specifications

Model CO162-CWM
Type Warmer plate plus stainless mug
Capacity 17 oz (500 ml in manual)
Heat claim Coffee kept at 156°F or higher at top setting (Cosori)
Power Plug-in, 24 W (manual)
Lid Included (for a spoon, not for drinking)
Dishwasher safe Not stated; wipe the warmer with a damp cloth
Warranty 1 year (Cosori)

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who wants hot coffee all morning at a desk with a plug and wants to set how hot.

Skip it if you walk away from your desk often; a warmer only works while the mug is on it.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Adjustable temperature
  • Mug designed for the plate
  • Works with other thin, flat-bottomed mugs

Cons

  • No automatic shut-off mentioned
  • Display shows plate, not drink, temperature
  • Steel mug not for the microwave

3. Mr. Coffee Mug Warmer – Simple Plate for the Mug You Own

Budget pickMr. Coffee MWBLK Plastic Mug Warmer for Office/Home Use

Warmer. The Mr. Coffee mug warmer is about as simple as this category gets: a small black plastic base with a warming plate, an on/off switch and an indicator light. The listing rates it at 17 watts and says it suits coffee, tea and hot cocoa, has a longer power cord than before, and wipes clean.

At 17 watts it is a gentle warmer, not a heater. It slows the cooling of a mug that starts hot rather than reheating a cold one, and it works best with a flat-bottomed mug that sits flush on the plate. The listing gives no temperature figure, so we cannot tell you how hot it holds coffee.

The listing does not mention an automatic shut-off, so make a habit of switching it off when you leave your desk; the indicator light shows when it is on. Mr. Coffee gives a one-year limited warranty, according to the listing.

Why we like it

  • Works with a mug you already own
  • On/off switch with indicator light (listing)
  • Surface wipes clean
  • One-year limited warranty, as listed

Key specifications

Model MWBLK
Type Warmer plate
Capacity Any flat-bottomed mug
Heat claim No temperature stated
Power Plug-in, 17 W
Lid None
Dishwasher safe No; wipe clean
Warranty 1-year limited (listing)

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who likes their own mug and just wants it to stay warm a little longer at the desk.

Skip it if you want coffee kept properly hot; with no stated temperature and a low wattage, it is a warmer, not a heater.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Simplest option here
  • Use any flat-bottomed mug
  • Indicator light

Cons

  • No stated temperature
  • No automatic shut-off mentioned
  • Low power

4. YETI Rambler 24 oz Ceramic Lined Stackable Mug – A Big Insulated Mug With a Lid

Best insulatedYETI Rambler 24 oz Ceramic Lined Stackable Mug

Insulated. YETI’s Rambler stackable mugs come in several sizes. Our coffee mug guide recommends the 14-ounce one and our camping mug guide the 10-ounce; this is the 24-ounce mug, a different product for people who fill a big mug once and drink from it all morning. It is the largest pick on this page.

The listing describes double-wall vacuum insulation that keeps hot drinks hot “until the last sip”, but YETI gives no hours, so we cannot compare it by number. The inside has YETI’s DuraSip ceramic lining, which YETI says makes for easy clean-up, over 18/8 stainless steel, and the MagSlider lid is magnetic and slides open. The whole mug is dishwasher safe. It stands 6.4 inches tall and 5.1 inches wide, and YETI notes it does not fit cup holders, which is fine for a desk.

On lead: YETI’s manufacturing FAQ says its Rambler drinkware is lead safe, and that the sealing bead at the base contains lead but is fully encapsulated and inaccessible.

Why we like it

  • 24 ounces, the largest mug here
  • Ceramic-lined interior (listing)
  • MagSlider lid helps hold heat
  • Dishwasher safe, including the lid

Key specifications

Model 21071508998
Type Vacuum insulated, ceramic lined
Capacity 24 oz
Heat claim “Hot until the last sip”; no hours stated
Power None
Lid MagSlider, included
Dishwasher safe Yes (listing)
Warranty Not stated on the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who brews a large mug once and drinks it slowly, with no cord or battery.

Skip it if you want a figure for how long coffee stays hot; YETI does not publish one.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Large capacity
  • Ceramic lining
  • Fully dishwasher safe

Cons

  • No hold-time figure
  • Does not fit cup holders
  • Heavy when full

5. Corkcicle Classic Coffee Mug, 16 oz – Triple Insulated, Hot for 3 Hours

Best stated hold timeCorkcicle Coffee Mug 16 oz Triple Insulated with Handle

Insulated. Corkcicle, a drinkware company, makes this 16-ounce desk mug with what it calls triple insulation. Its listing says it keeps coffee or tea hot for over three hours, the longest figure any insulated pick on this page gives for a mug with a handle.

The design is built for a desk: flat, easy-grip sides, a stay-put silicone bottom that helps stop it sliding, a handle, and a sliding lid that Corkcicle describes as shatter-proof. The listing says the mug is dishwasher safe. Sixteen ounces is a full mug of drip coffee with some room at the top.

Corkcicle’s listing does not describe what the three layers are or say anything about the lid seal or lead, so we have only the hold-time claim and the design to go on.

Why we like it

  • Hot for over three hours, according to Corkcicle
  • Non-slip silicone bottom
  • Sliding, shatter-proof lid
  • Dishwasher safe (listing)

Key specifications

Model 2516PBW
Type Triple insulated
Capacity 16 oz
Heat claim Hot for over 3 hours (listing)
Power None
Lid Sliding, shatter-proof, included
Dishwasher safe Yes (listing)
Warranty Not stated on the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a desk drinker who wants a stated hold time and a mug that will not slide around.

Skip it if you want a larger mug; at 16 ounces it is mid-sized.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Clear hold-time claim
  • Non-slip base
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Insulation layers not described
  • No lead or warranty statement on the listing

6. Stanley Everyday Suburban Mug, 24 oz – Big Handle, Lifetime Warranty

Best warrantySTANLEY Everyday Suburban Mug

Insulated. Stanley’s Everyday Suburban is a 24-ounce insulated mug with a large handle and a press-in drink-through lid. It is not the Stanley Everyday Camp Mug on our camping guide; the Suburban is taller, holds twice as much and fits most car cup holders, so it works at a desk and on the way there.

Stanley is honest about the numbers: it rates the mug to keep drinks hot for up to 2.5 hours, cold for 7 and iced for 30. That is a shorter hot figure than Corkcicle’s, but at 24 ounces it holds far more coffee. The lid is Tritan and splash resistant rather than leak-proof, the body is recycled 18/8 stainless steel, BPA-free and dishwasher safe, and Stanley gives a lifetime warranty on products bought from its authorized resellers.

On lead: Stanley’s FAQ says the pellet that seals the vacuum includes lead but is covered by a stainless steel layer and is inaccessible, and that if the base cap comes off in ordinary use, that is covered by its lifetime warranty.

Why we like it

  • Stated hot time of up to 2.5 hours
  • 24 ounces with a large, ergonomic handle
  • Dishwasher safe, BPA-free
  • Lifetime warranty (Stanley)

Key specifications

Model 10-13854-006
Type Vacuum insulated
Capacity 24 oz
Heat claim Hot up to 2.5 hours (Stanley)
Power None
Lid Press-in Tritan, splash resistant
Dishwasher safe Yes (listing)
Warranty Lifetime (Stanley)

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who wants a big insulated mug with a real handle and the security of a lifetime warranty.

Skip it if long hold time matters most; Stanley rates it hot for 2.5 hours.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Large capacity
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Fits most cup holders

Cons

  • Shortest stated hot time among the insulated picks with a figure
  • Lid is splash resistant, not leak-proof

7. Thermos Icon Series Stainless Steel Mug, 16 oz – Lid Leak-Proof When Closed

Best closing lidTHERMOS ICON SERIES

Insulated. Thermos is the long-established vacuum bottle brand, and its Icon Series mug is a 16-ounce insulated mug with a molded handle and a lid that closes. That closing lid is the point: Thermos says the Dura-Seal lid is leak proof when closed, which keeps heat in between sips and keeps a knocked mug from soaking your keyboard.

Thermos describes the vacuum insulation as keeping coffee hot “for hours” but gives no figure on the listing. The body is 18/8 stainless steel and dishwasher safe on the top rack, and the base is a soft, non-slip, quiet material that will not clatter on a desk. It also fits most standard cup holders.

Thermos’s most recent recall, in April 2026, was for its Stainless King food jars and bottles, not this mug. The Icon mug’s listing does not give a warranty term.

Why we like it

  • Lid leak proof when closed (Thermos)
  • Non-slip, quiet base
  • Top-rack dishwasher safe
  • Molded handle and cup holder fit

Key specifications

Model IS1002MS4
Type Vacuum insulated
Capacity 16 oz
Heat claim “Hot for hours”; no figure given
Power None
Lid Dura-Seal, leak proof when closed
Dishwasher safe Top rack (listing)
Warranty Not stated on the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a desk next to a laptop, where a lid that closes matters as much as the heat.

Skip it if you want a stated hold time; Thermos says only “for hours”.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Closing, leak-proof lid
  • Quiet non-slip base
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • No hold-time figure
  • Warranty not stated on the listing

How to choose a mug that keeps coffee hot

The right answer depends on how you drink: one slow cup at a desk, a big mug over a morning, or a mug that moves around the house with you.

1. Heated, warmer or insulated

A heated mug (Ember) holds a set temperature and is the only kind that keeps coffee at the same heat for as long as it has power. A warmer plate (Cosori, Mr. Coffee) slows cooling but only while the mug sits on it, and it needs an outlet. An insulated mug (YETI, Corkcicle, Stanley, Thermos) needs no power and goes anywhere, but the coffee still cools, just more slowly.

2. Read hold times carefully

Makers measure differently and many give no figure at all. Here, Corkcicle says over three hours, Stanley up to 2.5 hours, and YETI and Thermos give no hours. Ember gives a battery time of up to 80 minutes, and Cosori gives a drink temperature at a plate setting. Treat each as a maker’s claim, not a promise for your kitchen.

3. A lid matters more than you think

An open mug loses most of its heat from the surface. Every insulated pick here has a lid, and so does the Cosori set. If you drink slowly, keep the lid on between sips. Preheating any insulated mug with hot water for a minute also helps.

4. Battery and electrical care

Follow the maker’s instructions exactly. Ember says the Mug 2 is hand wash only and should charge on its own coaster. Cosori says to unplug its warmer when not in use and never to immerse it, and the Mr. Coffee listing mentions no automatic shut-off, so switch it off yourself.

5. Cleaning

Dishwasher-safe picks here are the YETI, Corkcicle, Stanley and Thermos (top rack). The Ember Mug 2 is hand wash only, and the warmer plates are wiped with a damp cloth.

How we chose these seven mugs

We started from what someone at a desk or kitchen table needs: coffee that stays hot without a trip to the microwave, a mug that is easy to clean, and clear care rules for anything that plugs in. We took capacity, heat claims and care from each Amazon listing, and safety and use notes from the makers’ own documents where we could find them (Cosori’s user manual and Stanley’s and YETI’s FAQs on lead). Every pick was in stock on Amazon when we checked. We have not used these mugs for this guide; heat claims are the makers’.

We searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall list for every brand here and found no recall for any of these seven products. Stanley’s December 2024 recall was for Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs, YETI’s 2020 recall for Rambler 20 oz travel mugs with the Stronghold lid, Thermos’s 2026 recall for Stainless King food jars and bottles, Cosori’s 2023 recall for air fryers and Mr. Coffee’s past recalls for coffee makers. We found none for Ember or Corkcicle. We left out the OHOM Ui 3 self-heating ceramic mug because OHOM gives no lead or cadmium statement for its glaze, which we require for ceramic drinkware. We also left out several heated mugs from brands we could not identify beyond their Amazon listings, the Hydro Flask and Fellow mugs already picked on our camping and travel mug pages, and the Ember Mug 3, which is on our coffee mug guide.

Keeping café de olla hot

Café de olla, simmered with piloncillo and canela, is sweet and spiced and tastes best hot; once it cools the sweetness takes over. A heated mug or a lidded insulated mug keeps it the way it left the pot. Rinse any mug soon after, because sugar left in a lid gasket or on a heated mug’s rim gets sticky. If you brew a full pot in the morning, our guides to the best coffee maker and the best French press cover the brewing side.

Keep-hot mug questions, answered

What is the best coffee mug to keep coffee hot?

For holding an exact temperature, a heated mug like the Ember Mug 2. With no power, a lidded insulated mug like the YETI Rambler 24 oz or the Corkcicle, which Corkcicle says keeps coffee hot for over three hours.

Do heated mugs work without the charging base?

Battery mugs do, for a while: Ember’s listing says up to 80 minutes for the 10-ounce Mug 2.

Are mug warmers safe to leave on?

Follow the maker. Cosori says to unplug its warmer when not in use, and the Mr. Coffee listing does not mention an automatic shut-off. Switch any warmer off when you leave the desk.

Which insulated mug keeps coffee hot the longest?

Among the picks here that give a number, Corkcicle states over three hours and Stanley up to 2.5 hours. YETI and Thermos give no hours. For lidded travel mugs with longer ratings, see our coffee go mug guide.

Can I put a heated mug in the dishwasher?

Not the Ember Mug 2, which Ember says is hand wash only. The Cosori warmer plate is wiped clean, not washed.

Our final pick for hot coffee at the desk

Buy the Ember Mug 2 if you want coffee held at an exact temperature. Choose the Cosori set for an adjustable warmer, the Mr. Coffee warmer to keep your own mug warm, and the YETI, Corkcicle, Stanley or Thermos if you want no cords at all. For everyday ceramic mugs, see our coffee mug guide; for straw cups and iced drinks, the tumbler guide. And if you would rather someone else made the coffee, see the menu or call to order.
