Less Math, Fewer Leftovers: The Best Cookbook for Two

The best cookbook for two for your table: recipes scaled for pairs, weeknight small batches, date-night menus and books for cooking side by side.

A smiling couple looking at a tablet while preparing food at a home kitchen counter
Two people cooking from a tablet.

Most recipes are written for four, which leaves a household of two doing math at the counter or eating the same dish until Thursday. Halving a recipe does not always work either, since half an egg and half a can of beans are awkward things to have around. A good cooking for two book does that thinking for you.

Books in this field do different jobs. Some scale every recipe to two servings. Others are about two people cooking together, whatever the yield. This guide picks seven books from named authors and publishers, and says plainly which kind each one is.

Quick verdict: the best cookbook for two for most households

For most couples and small households, start with America’s Test Kitchen’s The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook, which has more than 700 recipes rewritten for two servings. If you want a shorter weeknight book, choose Good Housekeeping Dishes For Two. If you want something romantic, choose Bre Graham’s Table for Two.

The other four cover everyday dinners scaled for pairs, cooking side by side, starting a home together and small batches of soup.

Our picks for the best cookbook for two, book by book

All seven were in stock in print, new and sold by Amazon when we checked. We have not cooked from these books; where we describe a strength, we say whose view it is.

1. The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook, America’s Test Kitchen – 700 Recipes Rebuilt for Two

Best overallThe Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook

This is the broadest book in the field. The 10th anniversary edition lists more than 700 recipes, and the publisher says more than 200 of them are new. The recipes are rewritten for two servings and not simply halved, from soups and roasts to cakes and pies.

The publisher’s copy adds practical help that small households need: total cooking times, a buying guide for smaller pans, shopping and storage strategies to cut waste, and ideas for using up leftovers such as half a can of beans or part of a cabbage. It also mentions new international, vegetarian and air fryer recipes.

Publishers Weekly’s page at this ISBN shows no review, and the bookseller’s copy carries only the publisher’s own words, so this pick rests on the publisher’s details and the test kitchen’s reputation. The linked edition is the paperback. A hardcover gift edition is also sold.

Why we like it

  • More than 700 recipes, per the title
  • Rewritten for two, not just halved
  • Guide to smaller pans and equipment

2. Good Housekeeping Dishes For Two, Good Housekeeping – Small Batches for Weeknights

Best for weeknightsGood Housekeeping Dishes For Two: 125 Easy Small-Batch Recipes for Weeknight Meals & Special Celebrations

If the test kitchen above feels like too much book, this is the shorter choice. The publisher lists 125 small-batch recipes for two, covering weeknight dinners, comfort food, lighter meals, date-night and holiday dishes, and desserts.

One feature stands out: mix-and-match pan sauces and sides that the publisher says create 1,300 combinations. It also covers leftovers and basic techniques, and it offers guidance on scaling down any recipe, including family favorites. That last part may be the most useful thing in the book, because it keeps working after you have cooked through the rest.

The publisher says the Good Housekeeping team develops and tests each recipe. Publishers Weekly’s page at this ISBN shows no review, and the bookseller’s page shows no outside reviews, so this rests on the publisher’s details.

Why we like it

  • 125 recipes, per the title
  • Mix-and-match pan sauces and sides

3. Table for Two, Bre Graham – Food for Someone You Love

Best for romanceTable for Two: Recipes for the Ones You Love

Bre Graham is an Australian writer and editor living in London, according to the author note, and this is her first cookbook. It is built around cooking for someone you love, whether that is a parent, a friend or a partner.

The publisher splits it into two parts: “uncomplicated-but-outstanding” dishes and “over-the-top-but-no-stress” cooking. It spans breakfast, lunch, aperitivo, dinner and dessert, and includes illustrated essays and multi-course menus for special occasions. The publisher promises “show-off meals for two.”

Publishers Weekly’s page at this ISBN shows no review, and the bookseller’s page carries no outside reviews, so this rests on the publisher’s and author’s details. The page does not give a recipe count, and because the author is London-based, check the measures before you buy, since we could not confirm US cups.

Why we like it

  • Written specifically for two
  • Two parts: simple and showy
  • Multi-course menus
  • Breakfast through dessert

4. Dinner Just for Two, Christina Lane – Portions Scaled for Pairs

Best for simple comfortDinner Just for Two

Christina Lane writes the blog Dessert for Two, according to the author note, so scaling down is her specialty. The publisher says every recipe here is scaled for two people, from simple weeknight meals to celebratory dinners, with 100 dishes and more than 100 photographs.

The review we read in Publishers Weekly is not warm, and you should know that. It calls the introduction inviting but the book “uneven,” says the voice is cheerful but the organization confusing, and describes some recipes as ordinary, such as a ground turkey casserole topped with frozen Tater Tots. It does like more refined dishes such as cauliflower soup with saffron and barley with mushrooms and brie.

PW concludes that the book stands out more for its portion sizes than for its content. That is still the thing you are buying it for. Every recipe is scaled for two, which several others on this page cannot say.

Why we like it

  • 100 dishes, per the publisher
  • Every recipe scaled for two
  • More than 100 photographs
  • A chapter on large-batch staples, says PW

Why we recommend it

Skip it if you want exciting cooking. PW found much of it ordinary, and the organization confusing.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Every recipe for two
  • Photographed throughout
  • Author specializes in small batches

Cons

  • PW calls it uneven
  • Confusing organization, says PW

5. A Couple Cooks, Sonja and Alex Overhiser – Two Cooks, One Kitchen

Best for cooking togetherA Couple Cooks: 100 Recipes to Cook Together

This book takes the other meaning of “for two.” Sonja and Alex Overhiser write the blog A Couple Cooks, and the publisher says each recipe here assigns a role to each person, so two people can work the kitchen without stepping on each other.

It includes everyday dinners, larger gatherings and dinners for two, plus advice on hosting, table setting and stocking a bar cart. The publisher notes plenty of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options, and says the book is meant for all kinds of partnerships, including roommates. Check each recipe if you cook around an allergy.

Publisher copy quotes Eater on “the division of labor, which felt evenly weighted,” which is exactly what you would want to know. We read that through the bookseller’s copy. Publishers Weekly’s page at this ISBN shows no review. Yields are not stated in our sources, and the copy mentions recipes for large gatherings, so do not assume every dish serves exactly two.

Why we like it

  • About 100 recipes, per the publisher
  • Assigns a role to each cook
  • Hosting and table advice
  • Vegetarian and vegan options, per the publisher

6. The Newlywed Table, Maria Zizka – Setting Up a Home Together

Best wedding giftThe Newlywed Table: A Cookbook to Start Your Life Together

Maria Zizka has written several cookbooks, according to the author note. This one is aimed at newlyweds who want to build a kitchen they enjoy using. The publisher lists 100 recipes, from weeknight dinners such as a leek and goat cheese tart to entertaining centerpieces such as a whole side of salmon, plus brownies and birthday cake.

Much of its value is outside the recipes. The publisher says it covers food storage, leftovers, stocking a pantry, setting a table, hosting and making a signature cocktail, and that it has a keepsake element where a couple can record what they cook.

Publisher copy quotes BookPage on why a cookbook “written for a new duo” makes a good wedding present, and Elisabeth Prueitt and Chad Robertson of Tartine praising the recipes as ones to pass down. We read those through the bookseller’s copy. Publishers Weekly’s page at this ISBN shows no review. Servings are not stated in our sources, so this is a book for two people, not necessarily portions for two.

Why we like it

  • 100 recipes, per the publisher
  • Pantry, storage and hosting advice
  • Keepsake pages for a couple
  • Praise from Tartine’s founders, via the publisher

7. Soup for Two, Joanna Pruess – Small Pots, No Big Leftovers

Best small-batch soupsSoup for Two: Small-Batch Recipes for One

Soup is the dish most likely to feed two people for six days. Joanna Pruess’s book deals with that one problem. The publisher describes soup recipes from around the world, scaled for one, two or a few servings, with a modest number of ingredients and easy techniques, so the refrigerator does not fill up with leftovers.

Examples in the publisher’s copy include a tomato bisque with mini grilled cheese sandwiches and a Tuscan white bean soup with sage. Pruess has written for The New York Times Sunday Magazine, The Washington Post, Food & Wine and Saveur, according to the author note.

Publishers Weekly’s page at this ISBN shows no review. The one piece of praise on the bookseller’s page, from Mark Bittman, is about her earlier book, not this one, so we do not count it here. This pick rests on the publisher’s and author’s details. It is also the narrowest book on the page, and if you would rather make big batches, our best soup cookbook guide has others.

Why we like it

  • Scaled for one, two or a few
  • Soups from around the world
  • Modest ingredient lists, per the publisher
  • Author has written for major food titles

How to choose a cooking for two book

Before you buy, work out which of these you actually need.

  • Scaled recipes or shared cooking. America’s Test Kitchen, Good Housekeeping and Lane all scale for two. A Couple Cooks and The Newlywed Table are about two people in a kitchen, and their yields may differ.
  • Pan size. Small quantities can burn in a big pan. ATK’s publisher includes a buying guide to smaller pans, and our best saute pan guide can help too.
  • Leftovers. Decide whether you want none, or a planned second meal. Good Housekeeping and ATK both deal with this. Reheating Mexican leftovers well is a useful skill either way.
  • One pot or many. If washing up matters as much as portion size, see the best one pot cookbook.
  • Your family recipes. If you want to keep cooking what you know, look for scaling advice. Good Housekeeping’s publisher promises it.

How we picked these seven books

We searched Amazon’s book listings and kept print editions from named authors or established test kitchens at known publishers, in stock, new and sold by Amazon when we checked. We left out every title already on our other book pages. Author, year, format and page count come from the Amazon listing. Recipe counts and descriptions come from the title or the publisher’s copy, as carried by booksellers, unless we credit someone else.

Here is which evidence stands behind which pick. Dinner Just for Two has a Publishers Weekly review that we read ourselves, and it is mixed at best. A Couple Cooks and The Newlywed Table have praise we read only as quoted in the publisher’s copy, so we name the outlet but cannot vouch for the full piece. The other four rest on the publisher’s and author’s details.

We also looked at Rebecca Warbis’s Date Night Cookbook and Robin Donovan’s 5-Ingredient Cooking for Two, which were in stock, but we had less to go on, and we stopped at seven so each pick did a separate job.

Cooking for two questions, answered

What is the best cooking for two book for beginners?

Good Housekeeping Dishes For Two, which covers basic techniques alongside its recipes, by its publisher’s description. ATK’s book is also clear, but much larger.

Can I just halve a normal recipe?

Often, but not always. Part eggs and part cans are awkward, and a halved recipe may need a smaller pan and a shorter cooking time. ATK’s publisher makes this point by rewriting recipes for two and not simply halving them.

Which book has the most recipes?

The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook, with more than 700.

Is any of these good for a wedding gift?

The Newlywed Table is built for it, with keepsake pages. A Couple Cooks is another good fit for two people who like cooking together.

Do all these recipes serve exactly two?

No. Our sources say ATK, Good Housekeeping and Lane scale for two, and Pruess for one, two or a few. We could not confirm yields for A Couple Cooks or The Newlywed Table, and Graham’s copy describes meals for two without giving every yield.

Which for-two book should you buy first?

Buy The Complete Cooking for Two Cookbook if you want the widest help. Choose Dishes For Two for weeknights, Table for Two for romance and A Couple Cooks for cooking side by side. Lane, Zizka and Pruess each suit a narrower kitchen, and each entry says who that is.

And if the two of you would rather not cook tonight, see the menu or call to order.
