A chafing dish keeps guisados, rice and beans hot on a buffet, and an electric one does it without cans of fuel or an open flame. You plug it in, fill the water pan and set the temperature, and it holds the carnitas or the chile colorado at serving heat for the length of the party. For an indoor family gathering, a church hall that does not allow flames, or a backyard party with an outlet nearby, that is the easier way to run a buffet.
Our chafing dish guide covers the classic fuel-heated chafers, and our buffet server guide covers the three-pan home servers. This page is about plug-in chafers: full-size, roll-top units with a heated water pan, plus one commercial warmer for comparison. Below are seven, from ROVSUN, THXSUN, Garvee, Dyna-Living, PYY and Winco, with what each maker says about its heating, and what two university extension services say about keeping hot food hot.

Quick verdict: which plug-in chafer to buy
The best electric chafing dish for most hosts is the ROVSUN 9 Qt Electric Roll Top Chafing Dish: a full-size pan or two smaller pans under a clear lid that opens from either side, a stated 80 to 200°F range, and dishwasher-safe pans, water pan and cover. If you want the most precise control, the THXSUN 9 Qt lists 77 to 212°F with a digital display and dry-boil protection. For a big party, the Garvee two-pack gives you two chafers in one box.

Our picks for the best electric chafing dish
Six of these seven are water-bath chafers: a heater warms water in a pan, and the food pans sit in that water, the same way a fuel chafer works. The Winco is a commercial wet well that takes your own steam-table pans. Each pick gives the maker’s heating specs, who it suits, and one honest reason to skip it.
1. ROVSUN 9 Qt Electric Roll Top Chafing Dish – Full Pan or Two Halves

This is what most people mean by an electric chafing dish: a full-size steam-table chafer with a water pan, but heated by a hot plate in the base instead of a can of fuel. ROVSUN’s 9-quart unit comes with one full-size food pan and two detachable smaller pans, so it can hold one big pan of carnitas or two sides, such as rice and charro beans, under one lid.
ROVSUN lists an adjustable range of 80 to 200°F with a temperature display. Like every water-bath chafer, it needs water in the water pan before you switch it on; the listing says so plainly. The clear PC lid opens from either side to 90 degrees, so guests can serve from both sides of a table, and small blocks inside the cover stop it sliding off.
ROVSUN says the food pan carries NSF certification and that the food pan, water pan and cover are dishwasher safe. The listing does not give the wattage.
Why we like it
- Full-size 9 qt pan plus two smaller pans
- Adjustable 80 to 200°F with a display, per ROVSUN
- Clear lid opens from either side to 90 degrees
- Food pan, water pan and cover dishwasher safe
Key specifications

Why we recommend it
It suits a host who wants one plug-in chafer that can hold a main dish or two sides, at home or at a family party with an outlet nearby.
Skip it if you need more than one or two dishes hot at once; buy a two-pack or add a second unit.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Flexible pan setup
- Easy self-service lid
- Most parts go in the dishwasher
Cons
- Wattage not stated
- Needs water before use
- One unit per box
2. THXSUN 9 Qt Electric Chafing Dish with Digital Control – Widest Range, Digital Display

THXSUN’s chafer is a single full-size, 9-quart pan with the most detailed heating specs on this page. The listing gives a button-controlled range of 77 to 212°F, a 700-watt heating system, and a digital display that THXSUN says shows the real-time food temperature.
THXSUN says the heater cycles on and off within about 2°C of the set temperature and has overheat protection to prevent dry boiling. It also says the unit is designed mainly for keeping food warm, and that filling the water pan with hot water helps it reach serving temperature faster. That is the right way to use any electric chafer: cook and heat the food first, then hold it.
The food pan is stainless steel and dishwasher safe, and the clear roll-top lid is PVC. THXSUN says the pan serves at least eight people.
Why we like it
- 77 to 212°F with a digital display, per THXSUN
- 700-watt heater that cycles to hold the setting
- Overheat and dry-boil protection
- Dishwasher-safe food pan

- High top setting
Cons
- One pan only
- Displayed temperature is not a probe in the food
- Lesser-known brand

3. Garvee 9 Qt Electric Roll Top Chafing Dish, 2-Pack – Two Chafers for a Party Line

A party usually needs more than one hot dish, and Garvee’s two-pack puts two plug-in chafers in one box. Each unit has a 15-quart integrated water pan, and the set includes two full-size 9-quart pans and four half-size 4.5-quart pans, so you can run a full pan of fajita meat in one and rice and beans in the other.
Garvee lists a 400-watt heater with a thermostat that adjusts from 86 to 200°F, a clear roll-top PC lid, and NSF-certified food pans in standard sizes, so replacement or extra steam-table pans should fit. Each unit measures 23 by 14 by 14 inches.
Garvee describes the stainless body as easy to wipe down after service; the listing does not say which parts go in the dishwasher. Each unit has its own power cable, so plan for two outlets.
Why we like it
- Two complete chafers with full and half pans
- 86 to 200°F thermostat, 400 W each
- Standard NSF-certified pans
- Clear roll-top lids
Key specifications

Skip it if you are short on outlets or storage; two full-size chafers take room in both places.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Two units in one box
- Full and half pans included
- Standard pan sizes
Cons
- Needs two outlets
- Dishwasher use not stated
- Bulky to store
4. Dyna-Living 9.5 Qt Electric Chafing Dish – Five Pans in the Box

Dyna-Living’s chafer comes with more pans than any other single unit here: a 9.5-quart full-size solid pan, two 4.75-quart half-size solid pans, two half-size grid (perforated) pans, a 14.8-quart integrated water pan, a serving clip and a clear roll-top lid.
The listing gives 600 watts of PTC heating and a digital panel adjustable from 86 to 185°F. Dyna-Living says the PTC element heats quickly and then holds a steady temperature without overheating. The lid flips open 90 degrees from either side and detaches for cleaning.
The perforated pans are useful for anything you want to keep out of its own liquid, such as tamales or steamed tortillas over the water. The listing does not say whether the pans are dishwasher safe.
Why we like it
- Full, half solid and half perforated pans included
- 600 W PTC heating
- Digital control from 86 to 185°F

Pros and cons
Pros
- Five pans included
- Perforated pans
- Fast PTC heating, per maker
Cons
- Lower top setting

5. PYY Electric Chafing Dish with Two Half-Size Pans – Two Dishes, One Outlet

PYY’s chafer is set up for two dishes from the start: two 5-quart half-size food pans, each 2.6 inches deep, over a 16-quart water pan. Two shallow halves suit a taco bar pairing like carne asada and pollo asado, or rice and refried beans.
The heater is listed at 400 watts with a water-bath design, and the title describes digital touch control. The listing does not give a temperature range. The clear roll-top lid is PVC and detaches quickly for cleaning.
PYY describes the body as stainless steel and easy to wipe clean. Dishwasher use is not stated.
Why we like it
- Two half-size pans included

- One outlet
Cons
- No stated temperature range
- Dishwasher use not stated
- No full-size pan

6. Garvee Electric Chafing Dish with Three Third-Size Pans – Three Sides Under One Lid

Three third-size pans in one chafer is the layout a taco bar wants: rice, beans and queso, or three guisados, each in its own 3-quart pan over a shared 15-quart water pan. Garvee’s unit is that layout as a single plug-in chafer.
The heating matches Garvee’s larger chafers: a 400-watt element with a thermostat from 86 to 200°F, and NSF-certified food pans in standard sizes. The unit measures 23 by 14 by 14 inches.
Read the lid description carefully. The title says roll top and the parts list says a PC lid, but another bullet describes a stainless steel flat lid. Check the photos on the listing for the version you are buying. Dishwasher use is not stated.
Why we like it
- Three 3-qt third-size pans
- 86 to 200°F thermostat
- Standard NSF-certified pans
- One unit, one outlet
Key specifications

- Same heater as Garvee’s larger chafers
Cons
- Lid description is inconsistent
- No model number
- Dishwasher use not stated
7. Winco 4/3 Size Electric Food Pan Warmer – Commercial Build, 1,500 Watts

Winco makes restaurant equipment, and the FW-L600 is a commercial countertop food warmer rather than a party chafer. Its 27-inch well holds up to four third-size steam-table pans up to 6 inches deep, and Winco gives it 1,500 watts, a graduated temperature knob and a heating indicator light.
Winco’s product page says it is ETL listed for electrical safety in the US and Canada, conforms to UL-197, and comes with a one-year warranty. Retailer listings describe it as a wet-operation warmer that heats with water in the well. Winco’s own page gives the size as 29-5/8 by 14-1/2 by 10-1/2 inches.
The Amazon listing does not list pans or covers in the box, so plan to buy steam-table pans and lids separately. At 1,500 watts, it needs an outlet you are not sharing with a coffee maker or a griddle.
Why we like it
- Holds four third-size pans up to 6 in deep
- 1,500 W commercial heater
- ETL listed, conforms to UL-197, per Winco
- One-year warranty
Key specifications
| Model | FW-L600 |
|---|---|
| Pans included | None listed (fits 4 third-size pans) |
| Capacity | 4/3-size well |
| Power | 1,500 W |
| Stated temperature range | Graduated knob (range not stated by Winco) |
| Lid | None listed |
| Heating | Wet well, per retailers |
| Dishwasher-safe parts | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits a home cook who caters, runs a church or school fundraiser, or wants restaurant-style hot holding for four dishes.
Skip it if you want a set ready to use out of the box; pans and covers are extra.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Commercial equipment from a restaurant supplier
- Four pans in one well
- Safety listing stated by maker
Cons
- Pans and lids not included
- Needs a dedicated outlet
- Big for a home kitchen
Keeping buffet food hot: what extension services say
An electric chafer is for holding hot food, and the temperatures that matter come from food-safety guidance, not from us. West Virginia University Extension says hot foods on a buffet should be 140°F or warmer, and that chafing dishes, slow cookers and warming trays are how to keep them there. It also says that after two hours at room temperature, uneaten food should be discarded from the buffet, and that when a platter or bowl empties, you should use a fresh dish rather than refilling it. For dishes made ahead, it says to reheat hot foods to 165°F.
Oklahoma State University Extension adds the hot-weather rule that matters in a Houston backyard: the two-hour limit drops to one hour when the temperature is 90°F or higher. Its food specialist also warns that some warming dishes hold food only at 110 to 120°F rather than the 140°F required, and recommends checking with a food thermometer and reading the product information.
In practice, that means three things. Heat the food fully on the stove or in the oven before it goes in the chafer. Fill the water pan with hot water, as THXSUN suggests, so the unit is not starting cold. And check the food, not the display, with an instant-read thermometer during the party.

How to choose an electric chafing dish
Water bath or dry heat. Water-bath chafers (ROVSUN, THXSUN, Garvee, Dyna-Living, PYY) heat gently and keep rice and shredded meat from drying out, but they need water every time. A dry, three-pan buffet server, covered in our buffet server guide, is simpler indoors.
Pan layout. One full-size pan suits a single main dish. Two halves or three thirds suit a taco bar. Standard steam-table sizes, which Garvee and ROVSUN state, let you buy extra pans later.
A stated temperature range. Prefer a unit whose maker gives one. The ranges here run from 185°F (Dyna-Living) to 212°F (THXSUN) at the top; PYY does not give one.
Power and outlets. Plug-in chafers here run from 400 to 700 watts, and the commercial Winco 1,500. Two chafers plus a crock of queso on one circuit can overload it, so spread them across outlets on different circuits where you can.
The lid. A roll-top that opens from either side lets guests serve from both sides of the table. Clear lids show what is inside without opening them and letting the heat out.

How we picked these seven electric chafers
We looked at plug-in chafers and warmers from ROVSUN, THXSUN, Garvee, GarveeHome, Dyna-Living, PYY, VEVOR, Winco, Vollrath, Hamilton Beach, Elite Gourmet, MegaChef, NutriChef, COSTWAY, BELLA and others, and kept only those showing as in stock on Amazon when we checked. We left out the picks already on our chafing dish, buffet server and food warming mat guides. Specifications come from the Amazon listings and, for Winco, from Winco’s own product page. Hot-holding guidance comes from West Virginia University Extension and Oklahoma State University Extension.
We also searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall database for chafing dishes, buffet servers, food warmers and each brand here, and found no recalls for these products. Many plug-in chafers are sold by brands that are not household names, so we favored listings that give a model, wattage and a temperature range. We have not used these units ourselves and did not find independent reviews of them that we could read, so we have not cited any.
Electric chafing dish questions, answered
What is the best rated electric chafing dish?
We do not repeat star ratings, because they change. On specifications, the ROVSUN 9-quart is our overall pick for its flexible pans, stated temperature range and dishwasher-safe parts; the THXSUN gives the most detailed heating information.
Do electric chafing dishes need water?
Water-bath models do. ROVSUN, Garvee and THXSUN all say to put water in the water pan before heating. Dry buffet servers do not use water.
Can you cook or reheat food in an electric chafing dish?
They are built to hold food hot, and THXSUN describes its unit as mainly for keeping food warm. WVU Extension says to reheat hot foods to 165°F; do that on the stove or in the oven, then move the food to the chafer.
How long can food stay in an electric chafer?
As long as it stays at 140°F or above, according to WVU Extension. If it drops below that, the two-hour limit applies, or one hour above 90°F outdoors, per Oklahoma State Extension. Check the food with a thermometer.
What should I look for in electric chafing dish reviews?
Whether buyers mention the food, not just the water, reaching serving temperature, how long the unit takes to heat, and whether the lid stays put. Then compare those reports with the maker’s stated range and wattage.
The electric chafer to start with
Buy the ROVSUN for most parties, the THXSUN if you want precise control, or the Garvee two-pack for a big crowd. If you would rather use fuel or need a chafer that folds flat, see our chafing dish guide; for three-pan home servers, our buffet server guide; and for plates and covered dishes, a food warming mat. Our taco bar supplies guide covers the rest of the table. Planning a party and would rather not cook? See the menu and call to order.
