Wood, Steel or Coil? How to Choose the Best Grill Scraper

Bristle-free wood, steel, coil and griddle scrapers: how to choose the best grill scraper for your grate, with eight picks and the 2026 wire-brush recalls.

A steel grill grate over a bed of glowing charcoal embers
A hot grate over live coals; scraping is easiest while the bars are still warm.

A scraper is the plainest way to clean a grill: a hard edge pushed along the grate while it is still warm, so the burnt fat and charred marinade come off before they set. It has no bristles to wear out or shed, and the good ones last for years. If you grill fajitas, carne asada or chicken in an adobo marinade, a lot of sugar and oil ends up stuck to the bars, and a scraper is the tool that shifts it.

Our gas grill brush guide covers bristle-free brushes: nylon, coil and steam-cleaning heads. This page is the narrower look at scrapers alone, with wooden paddles that wear grooves to fit your grate, steel scrapers for round rods, a coil scraper, flat blades for griddles and curved tools for kettle bowls. None of the picks here repeat that guide’s picks.

Quick verdict: which grill scraper to buy

For most gas and charcoal grills, the best grill scraper is the Totally Bamboo Bristle-Free Bamboo Grill Scraper: a wood edge that wears grooves to match your grate as you use it, on a 15.5-inch handle that keeps your hand back from the heat. If your grate has round steel rods, the stainless Grill Floss cleans the top and sides of each rod without lifting the grate. For a flat-top griddle, get the OXO Outdoor Griddle Scraper.

Below are eight scrapers for different grates and cooktops, and an explanation of why wire brushes are left out.

Our picks for the best grill scraper

These eight tools fall into four groups. Wooden scrapers are soft enough to be kind to porcelain-coated grates and wear grooves that match your bars. Steel scrapers and coils cut through heavier buildup. Flat blades are for griddles, where you scrape a smooth steel surface rather than bars. Curved scrapers clean the inside of a kettle or smoker, which a straight tool cannot reach. Each pick says which grill it suits and one honest reason to skip it.

1. Totally Bamboo Bristle-Free Bamboo Grill Scraper – Wears Grooves to Fit Your Grate

Best overallTotally Bamboo Bristle-Free Bamboo BBQ Grill Scraper with Bottle Opener

A wooden scraper starts flat. As you push its angled edge along a warm grate, the bars cut grooves into the wood, and after a few cookouts the edge fits your grate closely and cleans the top and part of the sides of every bar in one pass. Totally Bamboo describes exactly that for this scraper, made from Moso bamboo.

What sets it apart from other wooden scrapers is reach. The handle is 15.5 inches long, which keeps your hand well back from a warm grill and lets you work across the whole grate from the front. There is also a metal bottle opener built into it.

The easiest routine is to scrape while the grate is still warm, right after the food comes off, when the fat is soft. Wood is gentler than steel on coated grates, though it also wears down over time and will eventually need replacing. Totally Bamboo says to clean it by hand and not to soak it or put it in the dishwasher, which would split the bamboo.

Why we like it

  • No bristles of any kind, per Totally Bamboo
  • Edge forms grooves to match your grate spacing over time
  • 15.5-inch handle for extra reach
  • Lightweight Moso bamboo, with a built-in bottle opener

Key specifications

Model 20-7350
Type Wooden grate scraper
Working material Moso bamboo
Length 15.5-inch handle
Made for Outdoor grill grates
Handle Bamboo, built-in bottle opener
Dishwasher safe No; clean by hand, do not soak
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits most backyard cooks with a gas or charcoal grill who want a simple, bristle-free scraper and will use it every time the grill is warm.

Skip it if your grill has very heavy, long-baked carbon; wood is slower than steel on that.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Fits your grate after a few uses
  • Long handle
  • Gentle on coated grates

Cons

  • Grooves take a few cookouts to form
  • Hand wash only; wood wears over time

2. Grill Floss Premium Grill Scraper – Cleans Round Rods Without Lifting the Grate

Best for round rodsGrill Floss Premium Grill Scraper for Outdoor Grill with Round Grates - Bristle Free Grill Brush for Outdoor Grill - BBQ Grill Grate Cleaner Cleans Top and Bottom of Grill Without Lifting Grates

Grill Floss is a small, specific tool. It is made entirely of stainless steel, and its head is shaped to hook around a round grill rod, so a few strokes clean the top, the sides and the underside of each rod without taking the hot grate out of the grill. The maker designed it for grates with round rods, the kind found on many kettle grills and gas grills.

Because it is all steel, there is nothing to wear down or burn, and the maker says it can be used while the grill is hot. That is the honest advantage over a wooden scraper, which slowly wears away. The trade-off is fit: the shape suits round rods, not the wide, flat-topped cast iron bars on some gas grills.

Cleaning is a matter of scrubbing the gunk off the blade. The listing describes a replacement guarantee if it breaks in normal use, though it gives that as both a 10-year and a lifetime warranty, so check the terms with the maker if it matters to you.

Why we like it

  • Cleans between and underneath round rods without lifting the grate, per the maker
  • 100% stainless steel, with no bristles
  • Can be used on a hot grill
  • Replacement promised if it fails in normal use

Key specifications

Model GFLXL
Type Steel rod scraper
Working material Stainless steel
Length Not stated
Made for Grates with round rods
Handle Stainless steel
Dishwasher safe Not stated
Warranty Replacement if it fails in normal use (listed as 10-year and lifetime)

Why we recommend it

It suits owners of kettle grills and gas grills with round steel rods who want a scraper that will not wear out.

Skip it if your grate has wide, flat cast iron bars, which a rod-shaped head does not fit.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Reaches the underside of each rod
  • All steel, nothing to wear down
  • Works on a hot grill

Cons

  • Only suits round rods
  • Cleans one rod at a time
  • Warranty wording inconsistent on the listing

3. Grill Dog Cedar Hog Grill Scraper – Made in the USA from Cedar

Best two-handed woodGrill Dog Cedar Hog BBQ Grill Brush Scraper - Full Size

The Cedar Hog is a full-size block of untreated wood, shaped with smooth rounded edges so you can push it with one hand or lean on it with two. The maker says it is made in the USA from western red cedar, and notes that supply shortages mean the species can vary, though it is always natural and untreated wood.

Like the bamboo scraper above, it contours to your grate with use. The difference is the shape: a short, chunky paddle rather than a long handle. Two-handed pressure helps with stubborn buildup, but your hands are closer to the grate, so use it on a warm grill rather than a hot one, and wear grill gloves if you like.

Cedar is a soft wood and will wear faster than a hard wood or bamboo, and you will want to replace it when the edge is worn down or splits. Keep it dry between uses.

Why we like it

  • Made in the USA, per the maker
  • Natural, untreated wood with no metal bristles
  • Rounded edges for one- or two-handed use
  • Contours to your grate over time

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

It suits cooks who want a made-in-USA wooden scraper and like to put their weight behind it.

  • Two-handed pressure
  • Untreated natural wood
  • Made in the USA

Cons

  • Hands close to the grate
  • Soft wood wears faster

4. Chef Craft Bristle-Free Coiled Grill Scraper – Three Steel Coils, No Loose Wires

Best coilChef Craft Bristle Free Coiled Grill Brush

A coil scraper replaces bristles with tightly wound stainless steel springs. The coils flex over the bars and scrub the top and sides of the grate, but there are no individual wire ends to snap off. Chef Craft’s version has three coils side by side, which it calls a tri-brush, on a 16-inch tool.

Chef Craft says the coiled head has no sharp edges and does not shed bristles, and that the all-stainless construction can be used as often and as hard as needed. Because the coils wrap over each bar, they reach more of it in one stroke than a flat edge does. The 16-inch length keeps your hand back from the heat.

The listing does not mention a scraper blade, a warranty or dishwasher use, so plan to rinse and dry it by hand. Look the coils over now and then; if one starts to come loose, replace the tool.

Why we like it

  • Coiled stainless head with no bristles to shed, per Chef Craft
  • Three coils for faster cleaning
  • 16-inch length
  • Heavy-duty stainless steel

Key specifications

Model 21990
Type Coil scraper

Why we recommend it

It suits cooks who want something that works faster than wood on a dirty grate but still has no loose wire bristles.

Skip it if your grates are porcelain-coated and you want the gentlest option; wood is softer than steel coils.

  • Scrubs top and sides of bars
  • No wire ends to break off
  • Good reach

Cons

  • No flat scraper blade
  • Care and warranty not stated

5. OXO Outdoor Griddle Scraper – A Sharp Edge for the Flat-Top

Best for griddlesOXO Outdoor Griddle Scraper

A flat-top griddle needs a different scraper from a grate. There are no bars to clean between, just a smooth sheet of seasoned steel, and the job is to push grease and stuck bits into the drip channel after cooking. OXO’s griddle scraper has a stainless steel blade with a sharp edge that, OXO says, reaches into the corners of the cooktop.

The head and handle are angled so your hand stays up away from the hot surface, and the grip is non-slip. OXO also suggests it as a cooking tool: the sharp edge chops meat and vegetables on the griddle, which is how a short-order cook breaks up carne picada or chops onions and peppers as they cook.

It is not the Mercer scraper on our outdoor griddle accessories page; it is a newer, angled design from OXO’s outdoor range. The listing does not state its size or whether it is dishwasher safe.

Why we like it

  • Sharp stainless edge reaches into corners, per OXO
  • Angled head and handle keep hands off the hot surface
  • Non-slip grip
  • Doubles as a chopper while cooking

Key specifications

Model 9114000
Type Griddle scraper
Working material Stainless steel blade
Length Not stated
Made for Flat-top grills and griddles
Handle Angled, non-slip grip
Dishwasher safe Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits owners of an outdoor griddle who want one tool to clean the cooktop and chop food on it.

Skip it if you only have a grill with bars; a flat blade does not clean between them.

Pros

  • Angled to keep hands clear
  • Sharp edge for corners
  • Also chops food

Cons

  • Size and care not stated
  • Useless on grill grates

6. Cuisinart 6-inch Griddle Scraper – Knob Grip and a Splash Guard

Best for heavy buildupCuisinart Griddle Scraper

Cuisinart’s griddle scraper is shaped for pushing down hard. A 6-inch stainless steel blade sits under a handle with a knob on top, so you can put your palm on the knob and lean into burnt-on residue, and a built-in splash guard keeps grease and debris off your hand while you work.

That makes it the scraper for a flat-top that has been neglected for a while, or for the heavier cleaning after a big cookout. Cuisinart says it also works on BBQ grills and commercial cooking surfaces; on a grill, that means flat surfaces such as a griddle plate or a cast iron insert rather than between the bars of a grate.

Cuisinart says to rinse it with water and wipe it clean, and covers it with a one-year limited warranty. Cuisinart’s metal wire grill brushes were recalled by the CPSC in 2026; this scraper has no bristles and its model, CCB-500, is not among the models the CPSC lists in that recall.

Why we like it

  • 6-inch stainless blade for burnt-on residue, per Cuisinart
  • Top knob grip for leverage
  • Splash guard over the hand
  • One-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model CCB-500
Type Griddle scraper
Working material Stainless steel, 6-inch blade
Length Not stated
Made for Flat-top grills, griddles, cooking surfaces
Handle Ergonomic, top knob grip, splash guard
Dishwasher safe Not stated; rinse and wipe clean
Warranty 1-year limited

Why we recommend it

It suits griddle owners facing thick, baked-on residue who want leverage rather than reach.

Skip it if you want a long handle; your hand is directly over the cooktop with this design.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Strong leverage from the knob
  • Splash guard
  • Stated warranty

Cons

  • Short reach
  • Not for between grate bars

7. LavaLock Smok-n-Scrape Grill and Smoker Scraper – Curved for Kettle Bowls

Best for kettles and smokersLavaLock Smok-n-Scrape Grill and Smoker Scraper

Grates are only part of a grill. The inside of a kettle bowl, a smoker barrel or a kamado collects grease and flaking residue too, and a straight scraper cannot follow a curved wall. LavaLock’s Smok-n-Scrape is contoured to fit rounded surfaces, and LavaLock lists it for the Weber Kettle, Weber Smokey Mountain, Big Green Egg, Oklahoma Joe’s Highland and Longhorn, drum smokers and most charcoal and gas grills.

LavaLock says it will not damage porcelain coatings, which matters inside an enameled kettle. It also works as a grate lifter, and it has a hole so you can hang it beside the grill.

This is a second scraper rather than a first: it is for the bowl and the cookbox, not for the cooking grate. The listing does not state what it is made of or its size, so check the photos against your grill.

Why we like it

  • Contoured to rounded bowls and barrels, per LavaLock
  • Won’t damage porcelain coatings, per LavaLock
  • Doubles as a grate lifter
  • Hangs for storage

Key specifications

Model SCRP-1G

Length Not stated
Made for Kettles, kamados, drum and bullet smokers

Why we recommend it

It suits kettle, kamado and smoker owners who want to keep the inside of the cooker clean, not just the grate.

Skip it if you only need to clean grates; it is not designed for bars.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Follows curved walls
  • Safe on porcelain, per maker
  • Lifts grates too

Cons

  • Material and size not stated
  • Not a grate cleaner

8. Lodge Cast Iron Grill Scraper Combo, 2-Pack – Ridges and Pans

Best for grill pansLodge Cast Iron Grill Scraper Combo

Not every grill is outdoors. A ridged cast iron grill pan on the stove gives a steak or a row of green onions grill marks on a weeknight, and it collects charred residue between its ridges just like a grate. Lodge sells this pair of scrapers for exactly that: one grill scraper with teeth for ridges and one pan scraper with assorted angles for different pan curves.

Both are rigid polycarbonate, which Lodge says does not collect food particles and is dishwasher safe. Lodge, which makes cast iron cookware, sells these for cleaning its own grill pans, and covers them with a limited lifetime warranty.

The listing does not give a heat limit, so use them on a warm pan rather than one straight off a high burner. They are small hand tools with no handle, so they are not for reaching across an outdoor grill.

Why we like it

  • One grill scraper and one pan scraper, per Lodge
  • Rigid polycarbonate that does not collect food
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Key specifications

Model SCRAPERCOMBO
Type Hand scrapers, 2-pack
Working material Polycarbonate

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone with a cast iron grill pan, griddle or skillet who wants a simple scraper for the ridges and corners.

Skip it if you need a tool for a hot outdoor grill; these are short and plastic.

Pros and cons

  • Sold by Lodge for its grill pans
  • Two shapes in one pack

  • No handle, no reach
  • Not for a hot grate

Why this page leaves out wire-bristle brushes

Wire grill brushes can shed. In 2026 the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced several recalls of metal wire bristle grill brushes. On February 26, 2026, Weber recalled about 3.2 million of them (recall 26-282) because, in the CPSC’s words, small metal wire bristles can detach, stick to the grill or food and pose an ingestion hazard, with a risk of serious internal injuries that could require surgery. Weber reported four consumers who swallowed bristles and needed medical treatment. Conair recalled about 1.7 million Cuisinart wire grill brushes on July 2, 2026 (recall 26-601) and expanded that recall on August 27 (recall 26-717), to about 3.6 million brushes in total.

In a March 2026 statement on a separate wire brush recall, the CPSC’s chairman advised consumers to stop using those brushes and switch to non-wire alternatives. Scrapers are one such alternative. If you still own a wire brush, check the CPSC recall list for its model.

How to choose a grill scraper for your grill

Match the scraper to the cooking surface. Bars want a wooden scraper, a rod scraper or coils. A flat-top griddle wants a flat steel blade. A cast iron grill pan wants a small scraper shaped for its ridges. The inside of a kettle or smoker wants a curved tool.

Look at your grate. Round steel rods suit the Grill Floss and coil scrapers. Wide, flat cast iron bars suit a wooden scraper, which wears grooves to fit them. Porcelain-coated grates are best treated gently, with wood rather than steel.

Reach versus leverage. A long handle keeps your hand away from a warm grate; a short, chunky tool lets you push harder. The Totally Bamboo scraper and the Chef Craft coil give reach; the Grill Dog and Cuisinart give leverage.

Scrape warm, not cold. Fat and sugary marinades come off easily while the grate is still warm after cooking and set hard once it cools. Turning the burners up for a few minutes before you scrape does the same job.

Plan to replace wood. Wooden scrapers wear down, and that is how they fit your grate. Replace one when the edge is thin, cracked or charred. Steel scrapers last far longer but are harder on coatings.

How we chose these eight scrapers

We started from the bristle-free scrapers that identifiable makers sell on Amazon and kept only those in stock when this guide was written. Each maker’s listing supplied the materials, sizes, care and warranty details; where a listing leaves something out, we say “not stated”. Products already picked in our gas grill brush and griddle accessories guides were left out so the two pages do not repeat each other, as were wire-bristle brushes and anonymous Amazon-only brands.

We did not test these scrapers, and we do not claim that Julia’s kitchen uses any of them. We checked the CPSC’s recall pages for each brand on this list and found no recall of these scrapers; the Cuisinart and Weber recalls above concern wire-bristle brushes only.

Grill scraper questions, answered

Are wooden grill scrapers safe?

They have no wire bristles to shed, which is the main reason people switch to them. Like any wood tool they wear, so replace one when the edge becomes thin, cracked or charred, and check the grate for splinters if the wood starts to split.

Do wooden grill scrapers really form grooves?

Yes, that is how they are designed to work. Totally Bamboo and Grill Dog both say the edge contours to your grate with use. It takes a few cookouts, and works best on a warm grate.

What should you look for in grill scraper reviews?

Look for reports from owners of a grill like yours. A scraper that suits round rods may not fit wide cast iron bars, and a wooden scraper that works well on a gas grill grate may wear quickly on a very hot charcoal grill. Comments about how long the edge lasts, whether coils stay tight, and whether the tool fits the grate spacing tell you more than general praise.

How do you clean a griddle with a scraper?

While the griddle is still warm, push grease and food bits into the drip channel with a flat steel scraper, wipe with a paper towel, then wipe on a thin film of oil to protect the seasoning. Our cast iron griddle guide has more on caring for a seasoned surface.

Can I use a grill scraper on a porcelain grate?

Wood and plastic are the gentlest choices. LavaLock and Totally Bamboo both describe their scrapers as safe on porcelain-coated surfaces; check your grill maker’s manual before using steel.

Our final pick for clean grates

For most backyard grills, buy the Totally Bamboo scraper and use it every time the grate is warm. Choose the Grill Floss if your grate has round rods, the OXO or Cuisinart scraper for a flat-top, the LavaLock for the inside of a kettle or smoker, and the Lodge pair for a cast iron grill pan indoors.

If you would rather use a brush, our guide to the best gas grill brush covers bristle-free brushes, and our grill tools guide covers the tongs and turners that go with them.
