Grate or Griddle? How to Pick the Best Grill Spatula

Wide grate turners, flat-top griddle spatulas and thin fish turners: how to choose the best grill spatula for the way you grill, with nine picks.

A metal spatula flipping hamburgers next to sausages on a round outdoor grill
A long spatula keeps the hand back from the grate while burgers are turned.

A grill spatula does one job that tongs cannot: it gets under something flat and turns it without tearing it. Burgers, fish fillets, a tray of sliced peppers and onions for fajitas, a quesadilla on a flat-top: all of it wants a wide, thin blade on a handle long enough to keep your knuckles out of the heat. A kitchen turner from the drawer can do the job, but its short handle and small head make hard work of a hot grate.

This guide is the narrow version of our grill tools guide. That page covers sets and tongs; this one is only about the turner itself: long-handled grill spatulas, wide burger turners and flat-top griddle spatulas, sold one at a time so you can buy exactly the shape you need. None of the products here repeat the picks on our grill tools, spatula, spatula set, fish spatula or griddle accessories pages.

Quick verdict: which grill spatula to buy

For most grills, the best grill spatula is the Weber Precision Wide Grill Spatula: a wide stainless head beveled on three sides, a non-slip handle, dishwasher-safe and backed by a two-year Weber warranty. If you cook on a flat-top, get the Weber Flexible Griddle Spatula, whose slotted, beveled blade slides under delicate food. For fish, the thin, flexible OXO Outdoor Grilling Precision Turner slides under a fillet more easily than a stiff burger flipper.

The rest of this page explains how the nine picks differ, and which head shape suits the way you grill.

Our picks for the best grill spatula

These nine turners split into three shapes. Grate spatulas have long handles and wide, beveled heads for burgers and chicken over open flame. Griddle spatulas have flatter, squarer blades that sit flush on a steel cooktop and double as a scraper. Thin turners give up some stiffness for flexibility, which is what fish needs. Each pick says who it suits and one honest reason to skip it.

1. Weber Precision Wide Grill Spatula – A Wide Head Beveled on Three Sides

Best overallWeber® Precision Wide Grill Spatula

This is the grill spatula to buy if you only want one. Weber bevels the stainless head on three sides, so it slides under a burger from the front or from either corner, which matters when the patties are packed close together on the grate. The head is the wide version of Weber’s Precision turner, with room for a chicken thigh, a thick slice of onion or a row of peppers.

Our grill tools guide recommends Weber’s Precision three-piece set, which includes the standard-width Precision spatula. We chose the wide spatula here because it is sold on its own and its larger head suits a buyer who already owns tongs and only wants a better turner.

The handle has a soft-touch, non-slip grip and a metal hanging loop, and Weber lists it as dishwasher safe. Weber covers it with a two-year limited warranty against defects. The listing does not give the exact length or head size, so check the photos against your grill if space is tight.

Why we like it

  • Three beveled edges, per Weber, for getting under food from any side
  • Wide stainless steel head for larger pieces
  • Non-slip soft-touch handle with a hanging loop
  • Dishwasher safe, with a two-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model 6770
Head size Wide (exact size not stated)
Overall length Not stated
Blade material Stainless steel
Handle Soft-touch non-slip grip, metal hanging loop
Edge Beveled on three sides
Dishwasher safe Yes
Warranty 2-year limited

Why we recommend it

It suits the cook with a gas or charcoal grill who turns burgers, chicken and vegetables most weekends and wants one sturdy turner that goes in the dishwasher afterward.

Skip it if you mostly cook fish, which wants a thinner, more flexible blade than a wide burger turner.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Beveled on three sides
  • Wide head for big pieces
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Two-year warranty

Cons

  • Length and head size not stated on the listing
  • A wide head is harder to fit between crowded burgers

2. Weber Flexible Griddle Spatula – A Slotted Blade for the Flat-Top

Best for flat-topsWeber Flexible Griddle Spatula – Stainless‑Steel Slotted Spatula with Beveled Edge for Delicate Foods & Non-Stick - Griddle Accessory

On an outdoor griddle, most turners are stiff, and that is hard on fish fillets, soft vegetables and folded eggs. Weber’s answer is a flexible stainless steel blade with a beveled edge and slots, angled for folding, flipping and turning. Weber says the edge slides under delicate food and keeps it intact, and the slots help food release.

The listing gives the overall dimensions as 15.5 by 3.8 by 3.2 inches. That is shorter than a grate spatula, which is fine on a griddle, where you work across a flat surface rather than reaching over a fire.

It is dishwasher safe, has a hanging loop and carries the same two-year warranty as Weber’s other tools. It is a good partner for a flat-top that also needs a scraper and squeeze bottles, which our outdoor griddle accessories guide covers. Being flexible, it is not the tool for chopping or scraping.

Why we like it

  • Flexible blade for delicate food, per Weber
  • Beveled stainless steel edge for sliding under food
  • Hang loop and dishwasher-safe construction
  • Two-year warranty

Key specifications

Model 6780
Head size Not stated
Overall length 15.5 inches (listed dimensions 15.5 x 3.8 x 3.2 in)
Blade material Stainless steel, slotted
Handle Easy-grip, with hang loop
Edge Beveled
Dishwasher safe Yes
Warranty 2 years

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone with a Blackstone-style griddle or a griddle insert who cooks fish, eggs and vegetables as well as burgers.

Skip it if you only grill over open grates, or want a stiff blade for smashing and chopping.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Gentle on delicate food
  • Slots help release
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Shorter reach than a grate spatula
  • Too flexible for chopping
  • Blade size not stated separately

3. OXO Outdoor Grilling Precision Turner – Thin Enough for Fish

Best for fishOXO Outdoor Grilling Precision Turner

A stiff burger turner tends to push a fillet of fish rather than slide under it, and the flesh tears where it has stuck to the grate. OXO built this turner for that job: the stainless head is thin, flexible and beveled, and OXO describes it as handling flaky fillets as well as thicker cuts of meat.

That makes it the turner to reach for when you grill fish for tacos, shrimp skewers or thin slices of zucchini. It is part of OXO’s outdoor line, with a non-slip grip and a hanging ring, and it is a different tool from the wide OXO turner in the OXO set on our grill tools page.

The listing does not state the length, the head size or whether it can go in the dishwasher, so hand washing is the safe assumption. Before turning fish on any grill, oil the grate and let the fillet cook until it releases on its own; a thin turner helps, but it cannot unstick fish that is not ready.

Why we like it

  • Thin, flexible, beveled stainless head, per OXO
  • Made for flaky fish as well as thicker cuts
  • Non-slip grip
  • Hanging ring for storage

Key specifications

Model 9110400
Head size Not stated
Overall length Not stated
Blade material Stainless steel, thin and flexible
Handle Non-slip grip, hanging ring
Edge Thin, beveled
Dishwasher safe Not stated
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits the cook who grills fish or shrimp often and wants a second turner alongside a sturdier burger spatula.

Skip it if you want one spatula for heavy work like thick steaks or smashing burgers; a flexible head is not built to press.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Flexible head slides under fillets
  • Non-slip grip
  • Hanging ring

Cons

  • Size and dishwasher safety not stated
  • Not for smashing or heavy lifting

4. Charbroil Comfort-Grip Double-Wide Spatula – Room for the Big Pieces

Widest headCharbroil Comfort-Grip Double-Wide Spatula - CB1250034R2

Charbroil makes the head of this spatula 8.5 inches wide, about twice the width of a standard grill turner. That width is for food that a normal spatula cannot support in one go: a whole butterflied fish, a slab of grilled pizza, a large flank steak, or a full row of quesadillas on a griddle.

The trade-off is the one America’s Test Kitchen found when it reviewed grill spatulas: wider heads are harder to fit between burgers packed close together on a grate. So this works best as a second turner, kept for the jobs that need it, alongside a narrower everyday spatula.

The steel is stainless, the handle has Charbroil’s cushioned Comfort Grip and a metal hanging loop, and Charbroil says it can be washed with soap and water or in the dishwasher. The listing does not state the overall length or a warranty.

Why we like it

  • 8.5-inch-wide head for larger cuts, per Charbroil
  • Stainless steel construction
  • Cushioned Comfort Grip handle with a hanging loop
  • Dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model CB1250034R2
Head size 8.5 inches wide
Overall length Not stated
Blade material Stainless steel
Handle Comfort Grip, metal hanging loop
Edge Not stated
Dishwasher safe Yes
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits cooks who grill whole fish, pizza or big batches on a griddle and are tired of food breaking in half on the way off the heat.

Skip it if this would be your only spatula; for everyday burgers a narrower head is easier to steer.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Supports large, fragile food
  • Comfortable handle
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Too wide for crowded grates
  • Length and edge style not stated

5. Dexter-Russell Traditional 6 x 3-inch Turner – Carbon Steel, Made in the USA

Made in the USADexter-Russell 16221 Traditional Turner

Dexter-Russell is a long-standing American maker of foodservice knives and turners, and this is its traditional short-order turner: a 6 by 3-inch carbon steel blade, an offset neck, and a natural wood handle held on with brass rivets. The listing says it is made in the USA.

It is a different tool from the long-handled spatulas on this page. The handle is kitchen length, and the offset blade sits flat on a griddle or a cast iron pan, which makes it good for smashing burgers, turning eggs on a flat-top, or flipping tortillas and quesadillas on a hot comal. Over an open grate it puts your hand closer to the fire than a grill spatula would, so it belongs on griddles and plancha-style cooking rather than over charcoal.

Carbon steel is stiff and takes a fine edge, but unlike stainless it can rust. Wash it by hand, dry it straight away and wipe it with a little oil; keep the wood handle out of the dishwasher.

Why we like it

  • 6 x 3-inch carbon steel blade, per the listing
  • Offset design sits flat on a griddle
  • Wood handle with brass rivets
  • Made in the USA, per the listing

Key specifications

Model 16221
Head size 6 x 3 inches
Overall length Not stated
Blade material Carbon steel
Handle Natural wood, brass rivets
Edge Offset blade; bevel not stated
Dishwasher safe Not stated (wood and carbon steel: hand wash)
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits griddle and cast iron cooks who want a stiff, flat, restaurant-style turner that will last, and who do not mind drying it after washing.

Skip it if you want a long handle for grilling over open flame, or a tool that can go in the dishwasher.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Stiff blade for smashing and scraping
  • Offset sits flat on a griddle
  • Made in the USA

Cons

  • Carbon steel can rust if left wet
  • Short handle for open-flame grilling
  • Hand wash only

6. Blackstone Signature Series Griddle Spatula – Heavy Blade, Rubber Grip

Best long griddle turnerBlackstone® Premium Signature Series Griddle Spatula for Cooking

Blackstone is best known for its outdoor flat-top griddles, and this is its single Signature Series spatula. The listing gives the dimensions as 4.5 by 4 by 18 inches, so it reaches farther than the Weber griddle spatula, which helps on a wide 36-inch cooktop where food sits at the back.

The heavy-duty stainless blade has beveled edges for lifting, turning, chopping and scraping on a flat surface, and the handle is a slip-resistant, heat-resistant rubber grip with a bottle opener at the end. Blackstone says it can be wiped clean or put in the dishwasher.

It is not the same product as the Blackstone extra-long two-spatula set on our spatula set page; this is the single Signature Series turner, chosen for buyers who want one heavier spatula rather than a pair.

Why we like it

  • About 18 inches long, per the listing, for reaching across a big griddle
  • Heavy-duty stainless blade with beveled edges
  • Slip-resistant, heat-resistant rubber handle
  • Dishwasher safe, per Blackstone

Key specifications

Model 5195
Head size Not stated separately
Overall length 18 inches (listed 4.5 x 4 x 18 in)
Blade material Heavy-duty stainless steel
Handle Rubber, slip- and heat-resistant, bottle opener
Edge Beveled
Dishwasher safe Yes
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits owners of a large outdoor griddle who cook for a crowd and want one long, heavy turner that can also chop and scrape.

Skip it if you have a small tabletop griddle; the Weber griddle spatula is shorter and easier to handle in a tight space.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Long reach for wide griddles
  • Heavy blade for chopping and scraping
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Warranty not stated
  • Bulkier than a grill turner needs to be

7. Kamado Joe Krafted BBQ Spatula – Long Handle with a Slicing Edge

Best for live fireKamado Joe® Krafted™ Stainless Steel BBQ Spatula with Cutting Edge – Heavy-Duty Grill Turner

Kamado Joe is best known for kamado-style charcoal grills, and it describes this spatula as built for high-heat live-fire cooking on kamado, charcoal and gas grills. Kamado Joe gives it an 18-inch overall reach with a 13.5-inch handle, which keeps your hand well back from a hot charcoal fire, and a 4 by 4.5-inch stainless steel head.

One edge of the head is a slicing edge, so you can separate a rack of ribs or check the middle of a thick steak without fetching a knife. Treat that edge with the care you would give a knife: keep fingers off it and hang the spatula rather than dropping it in a drawer with other tools.

Kamado Joe says it is dishwasher safe and has a hanging hook. The listing does not state a warranty. The head is medium-sized, a good fit for steaks, chops and burgers on a round grill where space is limited.

Why we like it

  • 18-inch reach with a 13.5-inch handle, per Kamado Joe
  • 4 x 4.5-inch stainless head
  • Built-in slicing edge
  • Dishwasher safe, with a hanging hook

Key specifications

Model KJ15184126
Head size 4 x 4.5 inches
Overall length 18 inches (13.5-inch handle)
Blade material Stainless steel
Handle Ergonomic grip, hanging hook
Edge Integrated slicing edge
Dishwasher safe Yes
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits charcoal and kamado cooks who want extra distance from the coals and like a turner that can also cut.

Skip it if you cook mostly fish or a griddle; a sharp, mid-size head is not the shape for either.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Long reach over hot coals
  • Slicing edge saves a knife
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Cutting edge needs careful handling
  • Warranty not stated

8. RSVP International Endurance 18-inch Grill Spatula – Steel and Rosewood

Best wood handleRSVP International Endurance BBQ Grill Spatula Flipper

RSVP International’s Endurance grill spatula is a plain, traditional design: a stainless steel head and a rosewood handle with a hook at the end. RSVP lists the head at 7.25 inches long on a 10.75-inch handle, for 18 inches in all.

That length puts a comfortable distance between your hand and the grate, and the long head gives good support under chicken pieces and fish steaks. Some cooks simply prefer the feel of wood in the hand to rubber or plastic, and wood does not get slippery the way a smooth plastic handle can when your fingers are greasy.

RSVP recommends hand washing to protect the rosewood. Dry the handle after washing and rub it with a little food-safe mineral oil now and then, as you would a wooden spoon. The listing does not state a warranty or whether the edge is beveled.

Why we like it

  • 18 inches overall: 7.25-inch head, 10.75-inch handle, per RSVP
  • Stainless steel head
  • Rosewood handle with a hanging hook

Key specifications

Model BQ-TRN
Head size 7.25 inches long (width not stated)
Overall length 18 inches

Why we recommend it

It suits the cook who wants a classic, long wood-handled turner and is happy to wash it by hand.

9. Cuisinart XL Hamburger Spatula – Two Burgers in One Lift

Biggest burger turnerCuisinart CIT-702 XL BBQ Grill Accessory

Cuisinart’s XL spatula has a 5.5 by 6.5-inch stainless steel head, big enough, Cuisinart says, to lift several burgers or a large steak at once. Where the Charbroil Double-Wide is wide and shallow, this head is closer to square, so it carries a heavy load with less overhang at the sides.

The beveled edges are sharp enough for chopping on a grill or griddle, which is handy for cutting through a patty to check doneness or breaking up ground beef for tacos on a flat-top. Cuisinart recommends hand washing with dish soap.

A big square head is less nimble in tight spaces than the Weber or Kamado Joe turners. Think of it as the burger-night spatula: the one you use when the grill is full of patties and you want them off fast.

Why we like it

  • 5.5 x 6.5-inch head, per Cuisinart
  • Beveled edges for chopping on the cooking surface
  • Stainless steel construction

Key specifications

Model CIT-702

Why we recommend it

It suits families who grill a lot of burgers and want to clear the grate quickly.

Skip it if you want a dishwasher-safe tool, or a turner that fits between food on a crowded grate.

  • Very large head
  • Beveled for chopping

How to choose a grill spatula for your grill

Grate or griddle first. Over open grates you want a long handle and a beveled head that slides under food without catching on the bars. On a flat-top you want a squarer blade that sits flush on the steel and can double as a scraper, and the handle can be shorter. Many people who own both end up with one of each.

Head width. America’s Test Kitchen, in its review of grill spatulas, found the most successful models had heads at least 3 inches across at the front edge: narrower heads were precarious under fish and pizza, while very wide heads were hard to fit between burgers. A head that starts narrow and widens toward the handle gets both. If you grill whole fish or pizza, add a wide spatula as a second tool.

Stiffness against flexibility. A stiff blade presses smash burgers and lifts heavy steaks; a thin, flexible blade slides under delicate fish. The same ATK review found the shape and flexibility of the head mattered more than anything else, and that flimsy heads bent under weight. No single spatula is best at both, which is why the OXO precision turner sits on this list beside sturdier picks.

Handle length and grip. Around 16 to 18 inches overall keeps your hand out of the heat over charcoal. ATK found that a 21-inch spatula could feel too long, with less leverage and control. Look for a grip that stays secure when your hands are greasy: rubber, textured plastic or wood.

Material and care. Stainless steel is the low-maintenance choice and most of these picks can go in the dishwasher. Carbon steel, like the Dexter-Russell, is stiffer and traditional but needs drying and a wipe of oil to stop rust. Wood handles need hand washing.

How we chose these nine turners

We started from the spatulas that established grill and cookware makers sell on Amazon, and kept only ones in stock when this guide was written. We read each maker’s listing for the head size, length, material, handle and care instructions, and wrote “not stated” where a listing leaves a detail out. We used America’s Test Kitchen’s published grill spatula review for what separates a good turner from a poor one.

We did not test these spatulas ourselves, and we have not claimed that Julia’s kitchen uses any of them. We left out anonymous multi-piece kits, products already recommended on our grill tools, spatula, spatula set, fish spatula and griddle accessories pages, and items that were out of stock or only available in limited quantities. We also checked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall listings for each maker and found no recall of these spatulas.

Grill spatula questions, answered

What makes a spatula a grill spatula?

Mainly length and sturdiness. A grill spatula has a long handle, often 16 to 18 inches overall, so your hand stays out of the heat, and a stiff stainless head that can lift a thick burger. A kitchen turner works on a grill in a pinch, but its short handle brings your hand right over the fire.

Is a griddle spatula different from a grill spatula?

Yes. A griddle spatula has a flatter, squarer blade designed to sit flush on a steel cooktop, often with a sharper front edge for scraping and chopping. A grill spatula’s head is usually beveled to slide under food sitting on bars. Either will turn a burger, but each works better on its own surface.

Should a grill spatula be slotted or solid?

Both work. Slots let fat drain and reduce sticking, which helps with burgers. A solid head is better for scraping and chopping on a griddle and for holding juicy food. Most of the picks here are solid; check the listing photos if you have a preference.

Can you use a metal spatula on a griddle?

On a seasoned steel or cast iron griddle, yes: metal spatulas are the normal tool and a light scrape does not hurt the seasoning. On a nonstick or ceramic-coated griddle, use a silicone or nylon turner instead, such as the ones in our spatula guide.

What spatula is best for fajitas on the grill?

For sliced peppers, onions and strips of skirt steak on a griddle or grill pan, a griddle spatula is easiest because it can sweep, turn and chop in one tool. The Blackstone Signature Series suits the job, and the Weber Flexible Griddle Spatula is the gentler choice for folding and turning. Our guide to how to eat fajitas covers what comes to the table with them.

Our final word on grill spatulas

For most backyard grills, buy the Weber Precision Wide Grill Spatula: beveled on three sides, dishwasher safe and covered by a two-year warranty. Add the OXO precision turner if you grill fish, and the Charbroil Double-Wide if you cook pizza or whole fillets. On a flat-top, choose the Weber Flexible Griddle Spatula for delicate food or the Blackstone Signature Series for a large one, and the Dexter-Russell if you want a stiff, made-in-USA turner for griddle and cast iron work.

A spatula is one tool in a grill kit. Our guide to the best grill tools covers tongs, sets and basting brushes, and the outdoor griddle accessories guide covers scrapers, bottles and covers for the flat-top.
