Covered and Stackable: The Best Ice Cube Trays with Lids

Covered ice trays and tray-and-bin kits that keep freezer smells off the ice, with big cubes for margaritas and small ones for aguas frescas.

Four glasses of iced tea, iced coffee and orange juice on a light tabletop
Iced tea, iced coffee and orange juice, each poured over ice.

Ice is an ingredient, even if nobody orders it. A pitcher of agua de jamaica or a margarita on the rocks is mostly ice by volume, and if the cubes have been sitting next to a bag of frozen carnitas or a tray of onions, the drink tastes like the freezer. In a restaurant the ice machine has its own bin and a scoop that never touches anything else. At home, a covered tray is the closest thing to that.

This guide is the narrower companion to our best ice cube trays roundup. That page covers trays in general; this one only looks at trays and kits that come with a lid, cover or storage bin, and it deliberately picks different products, so you can compare covered designs side by side: sliding lids, flip-and-fill tabs, silicone covers and full tray-and-bin sets.

Quick verdict: which covered ice tray to buy

For most freezers, the best ice cube tray with a lid is the OXO Good Grips Flexible Ice Cube Tray with Lid, 2-Pack: the lid keeps freezer odors off the cubes, the trays stack, and OXO’s sliding lid lets you release only as many cubes as you need. For big, slow-melting cubes in a margarita on the rocks, choose the Joie Extra Large Covered Ice Cube Tray. If you make ice for a party, the DOQAUS four-tray set with bin and scoop gives you somewhere covered to keep the cubes once they are out of the trays.

Our picks for the best ice cube trays with lids

These seven cover the main ways a lid gets onto an ice tray: a rigid sliding cover, a fitted silicone lid, a flip-open fill door, and kits that add a covered bin for the finished cubes. They also cover the cube sizes a Mexican drinks table actually uses, from 2-inch blocks for a margarita on the rocks to small cubes and nuggets for a pitcher of horchata. None of them is on our main ice tray list, so if you already read that guide, everything here is new.

1. OXO Good Grips Flexible Ice Cube Tray with Lid, 2-Pack – Lid That Doubles as a Dispenser

Best overallOXO Good Grips Flexible Ice Cube Tray with Lid - 2 Pack

This is OXO’s flexible tray with a rigid cover, sold as a pair, and it is a different product from the OXO silicone-lidded trays on our main ice tray page. The lid does two jobs. It covers the cubes so, in OXO’s words, they do not absorb freezer odors, and it slides back so you can release as many cubes as you want and leave the rest covered in the tray.

That second job is the reason it is our top pick for a covered tray. Most lidded trays have to be uncovered and twisted to get any ice out, which leaves the remaining cubes open to the freezer. Here you can shake out four cubes for a glass of agua de jamaica and put the tray back still closed. OXO describes the cubes as rounded so they release easily, and says the lid is sturdy enough for stacking, which matters when two trays share a shelf with tamales and frozen tortillas.

OXO lists the trays as dishwasher safe and BPA-free. The listing does not give the number of cubes per tray or the tray material beyond “flexible,” so check the photos if you need a specific count.

Why we like it

  • Sliding lid releases only the cubes you need, per OXO
  • Cover keeps freezer odors off the ice, per OXO
  • Rigid lid built for stacking
  • Two trays in the pack, dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Material Flexible tray; material not stated; BPA-free per OXO
Cubes per tray Not stated
Cube shape Rounded
Trays in pack 2
Cover Rigid sliding lid
Dishwasher safe Yes, per listing
Extras None

Why we recommend it

It suits a household that grabs a few cubes at a time all day, for iced coffee, a glass of tamarindo or a single drink, and wants the rest of the tray to stay covered.

Skip it if you need very large cubes; these are standard-size rounded cubes.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Dispense without uncovering
  • Stacks neatly
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Cube count not stated
  • Standard cubes only

2. DOQAUS Ice Cube Trays with Lids and Bin, 4-Pack – A Covered Ice System

Best for partiesDOQAUS Ice Cube Tray with Lid and Bin

Covered trays solve half the problem. The other half is where the cubes go once they are out, and in most homes that is a zip-top bag that picks up whatever the freezer smells like. This DOQAUS set comes with four lidded silicone trays, a storage container and a scoop, so you can freeze a round of ice, empty it into the bin, and refill the trays for the next round. It is the home version of a restaurant ice bin.

DOQAUS says each tray has a flexible bottom, so you push the cubes out from below, and lift tabs for carrying. It is also honest about the lids: the listing notes that they allow airflow and are not airtight. They stop spills and keep things from falling on the ice, but they are covers, not seals. The trays stack, and the listing gives the set as about 8.2 by 4.5 by 3.6 inches.

DOQAUS describes the trays as food-grade silicone and the rest as plastic, BPA-free, with the whole set top-rack dishwasher safe. If you are filling a cooler of drinks for a backyard carne asada, four trays and a bin let you build up ice over a couple of days.

Why we like it

  • Four trays, a bin and a scoop in one set
  • Push-out silicone bottoms
  • Lids stop spills when carrying
  • Whole set top-rack dishwasher safe, per listing

Skip it if your freezer is small; four trays plus a bin take a shelf.

  • Scoop keeps hands out of the ice
  • Stacks to save space

3. W&P Peak Water Bottle Ice Tray with Lid – Ice Sticks That Fit Narrow Necks

Best for bottles and pitchersW&P Peak Silicone Water Bottle Ice Tray w/ Protective Lid

Square cubes do not go through the neck of a water bottle, and they jam in the spout of some pitchers. W&P’s Peak water bottle tray makes long, narrow ice sticks instead, and it comes with a lid. For a kitchen that sends aguas frescas out in bottles or keeps a tall jar of limonada in the fridge, sticks chill the drink without blocking the pour.

The construction is what sets W&P’s trays apart. A silicone-wrapped steel rim frames the tray, so it stays rigid when full and does not slosh on the way to the freezer, and a raised lip funnels extra water back into the tray. Each compartment is molded on its own, so you pop out one stick at a time rather than twisting the whole tray.

W&P says the lid keeps freezer odors off the ice, rests on the tray, peels off easily, and stacks. It describes the silicone as meeting LFGB requirements (the European food-contact standard) and as BPA-free, lead-free and dishwasher safe. The listing does not say how many sticks the tray makes.

Why we like it

  • Stick shape fits bottles and narrow pitchers
  • Steel-framed rim keeps the full tray rigid
  • Pop out one stick at a time
  • Lid keeps freezer odors out, per W&P

Key specifications

Model WP-ICE-WB-GR

Cubes per tray Not stated
Cube shape Long sticks
Trays in pack 1
Cover Lid rests on tray, stackable

It suits anyone who fills bottles, carafes or narrow pitchers and is tired of cubes that will not go in.

Skip it if you want cubes for rocks glasses; the sticks are made for bottles.

Pros

  • Rigid, spill-resistant frame
  • Individual release
  • Covered and stackable

Cons

  • Stick count not stated
  • Lid rests on the tray rather than locking

4. Joie Extra Large Covered Ice Cube Tray – Flip-and-Fill Door

Best spill-proof fillingJoie Extra Large Ice Cube Tray

Joie’s tray takes a different approach to the lid. Instead of filling the tray and then fitting the cover, you fill it through a small flip-and-fill tab with the lid already on, so there is no open tray of water to carry across the kitchen. The lid stays put, which Joie says prevents spills and keeps odors out.

It makes eight extra-large cubes. Joie points out that larger cubes melt more slowly, so drinks do not dilute as quickly, and suggests freezing berries, citrus curls or mint leaves into them. A few cubes with a slice of lime or a sprig of hierbabuena frozen inside look good in a pitcher of agua fresca. Joie also suggests the big cubes for surrounding shrimp and other party food to keep them cold, which works for a bowl of shrimp cocktail on the buffet.

The tray is plastic, which Joie calls European-certified food-safe plastic, and measures 10 by 5 by 2.5 inches. It is dishwasher safe and stacks without sticking, per the listing. Colors vary, so you may not get the one in the photo.

Why we like it

  • Fill through the tab with the lid on
  • Eight extra-large cubes
  • Rigid plastic tray stacks without sticking
  • Dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model 29105
Material Plastic, food-safe per Joie
Cubes per tray 8
Cube shape Extra-large cubes
Trays in pack 1 (10 x 5 x 2.5 in)
Cover Removable lid with flip-and-fill tab
Dishwasher safe Yes
Extras None

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who spills water on the way to the freezer and wants large cubes without a floppy silicone tray.

Skip it if you want to pop out a single cube; a rigid plastic tray releases cubes by twisting.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Fill with the lid closed
  • Large, slow-melting cubes
  • Rigid and stackable

Cons

  • Only eight cubes
  • Color is random

5. glacio Small Ice Cube Trays with Lids, Set of 2 – Small Cubes for Shaking and Pitchers

Best small cubesIce Cube Tray with Lids

glacio’s small silicone trays make 21 cubes each, 42 across the pair, and each tray has its own lid. The listing gives each cube as 1.3 inches wide, a size that fits a cocktail shaker, a highball glass or the neck of most pitchers, and that chills a drink quickly because many small cubes have more surface than a few big ones.

That makes them a good match for drinks that are shaken or poured over plenty of ice: a shaken margarita, a michelada or a pitcher of horchata, which wants to be very cold without sitting on one huge block. glacio says the trays are flexible, BPA-free silicone with a quick-release design, so you can pop out the number of cubes you need, and that the covered trays stack.

glacio also suggests them for small frozen treats and baby-food portions. The listing does not say whether they go in the dishwasher, so wash by hand unless glacio’s packaging says otherwise.

Why we like it

  • 42 cubes across two trays
  • 1.3-inch cubes fit shakers and pitchers
  • Each tray has its own lid; trays stack
  • Pop out cubes individually

Key specifications

It suits anyone who shakes cocktails or fills pitchers and wants a good quantity of small, covered cubes.

Skip it if you want slow-melting cubes for spirits; small cubes melt faster.

  • Useful all-round size
  • Covered and stackable

Cons

  • Dishwasher safety not stated
  • No model number on the listing

6. ARTLEO Mini Ice Cube Trays with Lid and Bin, 2-Pack – 110 Small Nuggets per Round

Best mini cubesARTLEO 2Pack Ice Cube Tray with Lid and Bin for Freezer

Some drinks want small, chewable ice: a raspado-style fruit cup, an iced coffee de olla, or a cup of tamarindo for the kids. ARTLEO’s kit makes 55 small nugget cubes per tray, 110 across the two trays, and comes with a storage bin, a lid and a scoop. ARTLEO says the bin holds six trays’ worth of cubes, so you can build up a stock over a few days.

These are rigid, flexible plastic trays rather than silicone. ARTLEO says the trapezoid cubes release with a gentle twist all at once, which is quicker than pressing out silicone cubes one by one, and that raised edges let you fill the tray at the faucet and carry it with one hand. Keeping the water below the fill line, ARTLEO notes, stops the small cubes from freezing together.

ARTLEO lists the trays and bin as food-grade, BPA-free and dishwasher safe, and says the lid keeps the cubes from absorbing freezer odors.

Why we like it

  • 110 small cubes per round
  • Covered bin holds six trays of cubes
  • Twist release empties the tray at once
  • Scoop included; dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model ALIICE12

Trays in pack 2
Cover Lidded storage bin

Why we recommend it

It suits households that like small, chewable ice and want a covered bin to keep it in.

Skip it if you want each tray covered while it freezes; the lid is on the bin.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Lots of small cubes
  • Fast twist release
  • Covered storage for finished ice

Cons

  • Small cubes melt quickly
  • Overfilling joins the cubes together

7. Handy Housewares Anti-Spill Covered Ice Cube Tray – One Plain Covered Tray

Simplest pickHandy Housewares Anti-Spill 14-Cubes Covered Ice Cube Tray with Easy Flip and Fill Lid (1-pack)

If all you want is an ordinary ice tray with a cover, this is it. Handy Housewares’ tray makes 14 cubes and has a pop-off lid with a tab, and the listing describes it as anti-spill: the lid makes it easier to fill and to carry the tray to the freezer without slopping water.

The lid also helps, per the listing, to keep freezer tastes and odors out of the cubes. The tray measures about 11 by 4.5 by 1.5 inches, the classic long, narrow shape that slides into a freezer door shelf or beside a stack of frozen tortillas, and each cube well is about 1 by 1.5 by 1 inch, a standard rectangular cube that fits most glasses.

The listing says the tray is BPA-free. It does not name the plastic or say whether it is dishwasher safe, and it is sold as a single tray, so buy two if you go through a lot of ice.

Why we like it

  • Lid with a tab for easy filling and carrying
  • 14 standard cubes
  • Slim 11 x 4.5-inch footprint
  • BPA-free, per listing

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who wants a basic covered tray that fits where the old uncovered one went.

Skip it if you want silicone or large cubes; this is a plain plastic tray of standard cubes.

Pros and cons

  • Simple, familiar design
  • Slim enough for a freezer door
  • Lid reduces spills

How to choose a covered ice tray for your freezer

Decide what the lid has to do. Every lid on this page keeps things from falling onto the ice and, according to the makers, cuts down on freezer odors. Beyond that they differ. OXO’s sliding cover lets you take cubes without uncovering the rest; Joie’s flip tab lets you fill with the lid on; W&P’s lid simply rests on the tray; DOQAUS says its lids are not airtight. If your freezer holds strong-smelling food, a cover that stays on while you take ice matters more than one that comes off.

Match the cube to the drink. Extra-large cubes from the Joie melt slowly and suit drinks served on the rocks. Small cubes from glacio or ARTLEO chill a shaker or a pitcher fast. Ice sticks from W&P go into bottles. Our guide to frozen vs. on-the-rocks margaritas explains why the ice changes the drink.

Think about where the cubes live after the tray. If you empty trays into a bag, the bag is where the off flavors come from. A kit with a covered bin, like DOQAUS or ARTLEO, keeps finished cubes covered too. For serving, a separate ice bucket keeps ice on the table.

Silicone or plastic. Silicone trays release one cube at a time but bend when full, so a frame (W&P’s steel rim) or a rigid lid helps. Rigid plastic trays carry better and release with a twist, but you get all the cubes at once. Safety wording such as “BPA-free” or “food-grade” is the maker’s claim; we report it as such.

Measure the shelf. Lidded trays stack, which is the point, but check height as well as width. A DOQAUS set with its bin needs more room than a single tray.

Ice for aguas frescas, micheladas and margaritas

A Mexican drinks table puts ice to work in different ways, and that is why we picked more than one cube size.

  • Aguas frescas such as jamaica, horchata and tamarindo are served from big jars over plenty of ice. Small to standard cubes chill the jar quickly; sticks fit tall bottles. The flavor of the drink is delicate, so clean-tasting ice matters here more than anywhere.
  • Margaritas on the rocks want large cubes that melt slowly; a shaken margarita wants plenty of small cubes in the shaker and fresh ice in the glass. Our margarita bar guide covers the rest of the kit.
  • Micheladas and palomas are long drinks in tall glasses, and standard cubes are the easy choice.
  • Café de olla served cold, or iced coffee, can be chilled with coffee frozen in a covered tray so the drink does not water down.

If you need far more ice than trays can make, a machine does the work: see our countertop ice maker guide. For clear spheres and craft-bar shapes, our ice ball molds page has the specialist trays.

How we picked these seven covered trays

We started from trays and kits sold with a lid, cover or covered bin, from OXO, Tovolo, W&P, Joie, DOQAUS, glacio, ARTLEO, Handy Housewares, Rubbermaid, Souper Cubes and a long list of smaller sellers, and kept only those showing as in stock on Amazon when we checked. We left out every tray already recommended on our main ice tray page (OXO’s No-Spill and covered silicone trays, Tovolo’s Perfect Cube, W&P’s extra-large cube tray, Rubbermaid and Gorilla Grip) so that this page adds new options. Souper Cubes were left out because they are freezer portion molds for soup and sauce rather than ice trays, and unbranded or “Generic” listings were skipped. Tovolo’s covered King Cube tray came off this page when it went out of stock.

Specifications come from the Amazon listings for each product. Where a listing does not give a figure, such as cube count or dishwasher safety, we say “Not stated” rather than guess. Claims such as “BPA-free,” “food-grade” or “lead-free” are the makers’ own wording. We did not read Wirecutter or America’s Test Kitchen coverage for this page, and we have not used these trays ourselves.

Covered ice tray questions, answered

What is the best ice cube tray with a lid?

For most kitchens, the OXO Good Grips Flexible Ice Cube Tray with Lid: it covers the cubes, stacks, and lets you release cubes without taking the lid off. For large cubes, the Joie Extra Large Covered tray.

Do lids really keep ice from tasting like the freezer?

Ice picks up odors from what is stored around it, and the makers of every tray here say their lids help keep those odors out. A lid is not a seal; DOQAUS, for one, says its lids are not airtight. Keeping finished cubes in a covered bin rather than an open bag helps as much as the tray lid does.

Silicone or plastic: which covered tray is better?

Silicone lets you pop out single cubes and is easy on large shapes; plastic is rigid, easier to carry full, and releases all the cubes with a twist. If you choose silicone, a tray with a frame or a firm lid is easier to carry to the freezer.

Can you stack ice trays with lids?

Yes, that is one of the main reasons to buy them. OXO, W&P, Joie, glacio and DOQAUS all describe their covered trays as stackable.

How long can ice stay in a covered tray?

None of the makers gives a time. In practice, ice that sits for weeks can shrink and pick up flavors even under a lid, so it is better to make what you will use within a few days and refill.

Our pick for a covered tray

Buy the OXO Flexible Ice Cube Tray with Lid if you want one covered tray that dispenses cubes without uncovering the rest, the Joie for big cubes in drinks on the rocks, or the DOQAUS set if you make ice ahead for a crowd.
