Divided, Printed or Plain? The Best Kids Melamine Plates

Seven melamine plates and sets for kids, from French Bull to Carlisle divided plates, plus what the FDA says about heating food on melamine.

A young child eating at the table, the age when a sturdy plate of their own starts to matter.

Kids’ plates take a beating. They slide off high-chair trays, get carried to the patio by a four-year-old, and come back with rice glued to the rim. Melamine is the material a lot of families settle on: it is rigid like a real plate, it is printed with whatever animal or truck the child is into this year, and it does not shatter when it hits the floor.

It also comes with one firm rule, which is that melamine is for serving, not for heating. This guide is the melamine-only follow-up to our wider guide to the best kids plates, which covers silicone suction plates, stainless steel and recycled plastic. Here we stay with melamine, name seven sets and plates worth buying, and explain what the U.S. Food and Drug Administration says about using them.

Quick verdict: which melamine kids’ plates to buy

For most families, the best kids melamine plates are the French Bull Kids Plate Set: four 8-inch plates in glazed melamine that French Bull describes as BPA-free, dishwasher safe and scratch and shatter resistant. If your child wants food kept apart, the Carlisle Kingline 3-compartment plates are the restaurant version of a divided plate, rated by Carlisle to 212°F. For a toddler just starting to feed themselves, the Itzy Ritzy Kids Dinnerware Set adds a bowl and small fork and spoon.

Below, the five standouts side by side, then all seven in full.

Our picks for the best kids melamine plates

These seven cover the ways families actually use melamine with children: printed plates for everyday dinners, a divided feeding set, restaurant compartment plates, a full toddler set with small cutlery, and a stack of plain plates for a birthday party. None of them is one of the picks in our main kids’ plates guide or our melamine dinnerware guide, so the three pages do not repeat each other.

1. French Bull Kids Plate Set, 8-Inch – Bold Prints, Tough Glaze

Best overallFrench Bull 4pc Kids Feeding Melamine Tableware Flatware BPA Free Dishwasher Safe

French Bull is known for bold, graphic melamine, and its kids’ collection is sold alongside its adult plates and serveware. This listing is a four-piece plate set in the Jungle pattern, with the size given as 8 inches. That is the right size for a child: big enough for a quesadilla cut in wedges and a spoonful of beans, small enough that a portion does not look lost.

The listing describes the plates as glazed melamine that is non-absorbent, BPA-free, and scratch and shatter resistant, and says they are dishwasher safe. It is also clear about the limit: do not use them in the microwave. French Bull pitches them for indoor and outdoor use, from breakfast cereal to a summer barbecue, and says its designs are created by Jackie Shapiro, a designer based in New York City.

Because French Bull sells other kids’ patterns and matching bowls and trays, you can add pieces later without the table looking random. For a child who refuses to eat anything that touches, see the divided options further down; this is a flat plate with a shallow rim.

Why we like it

  • Plain care line: dishwasher safe, no microwave, per the listing.
  • Glazed, non-absorbent surface, per French Bull.
  • 8-inch size suits a child’s portion.
  • Matching kids’ bowls and trays sold in the same patterns.

Key specifications

Model 74191 (Jungle)
What’s included 4-piece plate set
Material (as stated) Glazed melamine
Plate size 8 in
Dishwasher Yes
Microwave No (per listing)
BPA (maker’s claim) BPA-free

Why we recommend it

It suits families who want a proper, rigid plate a child can carry to the table, from a maker that states its care rules plainly.

Skip it if your child is still in a high chair and throws plates; there is no suction base and no divider.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Heavyweight glazed melamine, per the maker.
  • Clear dishwasher and microwave guidance.
  • Busy print hides scratches.

Cons

  • Listing does not say whether the four plates are identical or mixed.
  • No compartments for picky eaters.

2. Carlisle Kingline 3-Compartment Plates, Set of 12 – Cafeteria-Tough Dividers

Best divided plateCarlisle FoodService Products Kingline Plate with 3 Compartments

Carlisle FoodService Products is a foodservice brand whose listings are aimed at restaurants and cafeterias, and the Kingline compartment plate is the kind of divided plate you see on a cafeteria line. Each 8.75-inch plate has three molded sections, which is exactly what a child who wants rice, beans and chicken kept in separate corners is asking for.

Carlisle says the plates are heavy-duty melamine, shatter and stain resistant, with reinforced stress points for commercial use. The listing is the most specific on this page about heat: safe for temperatures up to 212°F, dishwasher safe, and not recommended for the oven or microwave. This listing is a case of 12 in tan; the same plate is sold singly and in white under other listings.

Twelve plates is a lot for one child, but it is a sensible number for a family with several kids, a grandparent who hosts on Sundays, or a birthday party where everyone gets the same plate. There are no characters or colors, which some children will mind and most adults will not.

Why we like it

  • Three deep compartments keep foods apart.
  • Made for commercial dish machines and heavy use, per Carlisle.
  • States a temperature limit (212°F), which most kids’ listings do not.
  • Same plate available singly to replace a lost one.

Key specifications

Model KL20325
What’s included 12 divided plates
Material (as stated) Heavy-duty melamine
Plate size 8.75 in, 3 compartments
Dishwasher Yes
Microwave Not recommended (per listing)
BPA (maker’s claim) Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits picky eaters and big households, and it is built to the standard of a school kitchen rather than a toy aisle.

Skip it if you want something cheerful; these are plain tan restaurant plates.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Commercial-grade construction.
  • Clear heat and care limits.
  • Divided sections suit fussy eaters.

Cons

  • Twelve is more than most families need.
  • No colors or prints in this listing.

3. Itzy Ritzy Kids Dinnerware Set, Ribbons & Roses – Plate, Bowl and Small Cutlery

Best for toddlersItzy Ritzy Kids Dinnerware Set

Itzy Ritzy sells baby and toddler products, and this set is aimed at the stage when a child starts feeding themselves. It includes a melamine plate, a matching bowl, and a fork and spoon sized for small hands, in a ribbons-and-roses print. Itzy Ritzy lists it for babies from 6 months.

The maker describes the melamine as sturdy enough for daily use and light enough for little hands, and says the set is top-rack dishwasher safe. The listing does not mention the microwave either way, so follow the FDA’s general advice for melamine and warm food in something else before you plate it. Plate and bowl dimensions are not given, which is a gap; expect toddler-sized pieces.

For a toddler, the bowl may get more use than the plate: mashed beans, a little arroz with broth, fruit cut small. Having the plate, bowl and cutlery match makes the set easy to keep together in a busy kitchen drawer.

Why we like it

  • Complete starter set: plate, bowl, fork and spoon.
  • Cutlery sized for small hands, per Itzy Ritzy.
  • Top-rack dishwasher safe.
  • Maker lists it for 6 months and up.

Why we recommend it

It suits a family with a baby moving from purées to finger food, who wants one matching set rather than a drawer of odds and ends.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Everything a toddler needs in one set.
  • Brand that specializes in baby products.
  • Top-rack dishwasher care.

Cons

  • No sizes in the listing.
  • Silent on the microwave.
  • One place setting only.

4. Tiny Expressions Construction Plates, 10-Inch, Set of 4 – Room for a Full Plate

Best for bigger appetitesTiny Expressions Construction Plates for Toddlers - 10" Set of 4

Most kids’ melamine stops at about 8 inches. These Tiny Expressions plates are 10 inches across, which matters once a child is eating two tacos, rice and beans rather than a few bites of each. The four plates each carry a different machine: a cement mixer, an excavator, a bulldozer and a dump truck, which is a fair way to end the argument over who gets which plate.

Tiny Expressions describes them as unbreakable, lightweight melamine and says they are BPA-free. The care line is clear: top rack of the dishwasher, and do not use in the microwave. The same maker sells the format in other themes, including unicorns, if trucks are not your child’s thing.

A 10-inch plate is close to a small adult dinner plate, so these also work for older kids who have outgrown cartoon prints on smaller plates but still need something that survives being dropped.

Why we like it

  • 10-inch size fits a full meal.
  • Four different designs in one set.
  • Clear care rules: top rack, no microwave.
  • Other themes sold in the same size.

Key specifications

Model Not stated (Construction set)
What’s included 4 plates, 4 designs
Material (as stated) Melamine
Plate size 10 in
Dishwasher Top rack
Microwave No (per listing)
BPA (maker’s claim) BPA-free

Why we recommend it

It suits school-age kids with real appetites and families who want each child to have a plate of their own.

Skip it if you have a toddler; a 10-inch plate is a lot to manage on a high-chair tray.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Larger than most kids’ plates.
  • Distinct designs end plate disputes.
  • Plain care instructions.

Cons

  • No model number or thickness given.
  • Top rack only.

5. French Bull Toddler Feeding Set, Farm – Divided Tray, Bowl and Cup

Best divided setFrench Bull 4pc Toddler Kids Feeding Melamine Tableware Flatware BPA Free Dishwasher Safe

This is French Bull’s toddler set rather than its plates: a divided tray with a utensil, a bowl and a cup, all in the Farm print. It is the same glazed melamine as the kids’ plates above, which French Bull describes as scratch and shatter resistant, non-absorbent and BPA-free.

The divided tray is the reason to buy it. A toddler who will eat rice only if the salsa stays out of it gets separate wells, and the matching cup and bowl cover drinks and soup. French Bull says the set is dishwasher safe but recommends hand washing, and is clear that it should not go in the microwave. Sizes are not given in the listing.

We include it as well as the plain plates because the two do different jobs: the tray is for the toddler years, the 8-inch plates for after. If you want a single brand across both stages, French Bull is one of the few with melamine for each.

Why we like it

  • Divided tray plus bowl and cup in one set.
  • Same glazed melamine as French Bull’s plates.
  • Clear microwave warning in the listing.

Key specifications

Model 74491 (Farm)
What’s included Divided tray with utensil, bowl, cup
Material (as stated) Glazed melamine
Plate size Not stated
Dishwasher Yes; hand wash recommended
Microwave No (per listing)
BPA (maker’s claim) BPA-free

Why we recommend it

It suits toddlers who want their food in sections and parents who like a set that matches.

Skip it if you rely on the dishwasher for everything; French Bull recommends hand washing.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Divided tray for separate foods.
  • Cup and bowl included.
  • Well-known melamine maker.

Cons

  • No dimensions listed.
  • Hand washing recommended.

6. Bentology 5-Piece Kids Dinnerware Set, Fairy – Four Sections and a Cup

Best four-section plateBentology 5-Piece Kids Dinnerware Set

Bentology sells several melamine mealtime sets for children, and this one brings compartments to the dinner table. This five-piece set has a plate divided into four sections, a bowl, a cup, and a fork and spoon, all in a pink fairy print.

Four sections is one more than the Carlisle plate, which helps when dinner is a main, a side, fruit and a dip. Bentology describes the material as melamine, says it is BPA- and PVC-free and break resistant, and calls the set dishwasher safe. The listing does not state sizes or say anything about the microwave, so treat it like any melamine and heat food elsewhere.

Bentology sells the same five-piece format in other themes, some with a plain rimmed plate instead of the divided one, so check the description for “compartment plate” if the sections are what you want.

Why we like it

  • Four-section plate for a varied meal.
  • Bowl, cup and child-size cutlery included.
  • Dishwasher safe, per Bentology.

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

It suits preschoolers who like a little of everything, kept apart, and a family that wants a complete matching set.

Skip it if you want neutral colors; the fairy print is very pink.

Pros

  • Four compartments.
  • Complete five-piece set.
  • Other themes available.

Cons

  • No sizes or microwave guidance in the listing.
  • Single place setting.

7. KX-WARE 8-Inch Melamine Plates, Set of 12 – A Stack for Party Day

Most plates per setKX-WARE Melamine Plates Set of 12

Not every kids’ plate needs a cartoon. For a birthday party, a backyard piñata afternoon or a big family Sunday, a stack of plain colored plates is often more useful than four printed ones. This KX-WARE set has twelve 8-inch plates in mixed colors, sold as salad plates but the right size for children.

The listing describes them as 100% melamine, break-resistant and lightweight, and gives the size as 8 inches across and 0.75 inch high. KX-WARE says they are BPA-free, top-rack dishwasher safe and not for use in the microwave. The listing also calls them non-toxic; that is the seller’s claim, and the FDA guidance below is the better guide to using melamine.

Twelve plates in several colors also solves a party problem: each child remembers their color, and the plates are reusable instead of going in the trash with the paper ones.

Why we like it

  • Twelve plates in one set.
  • Size and height given in the listing.
  • Clear care rules: top rack, no microwave.

Key specifications

Model Not stated

Material (as stated) 100% melamine

Why we recommend it

It suits hosts who need a lot of small, unbreakable plates at once, for kids and for snacks.

Skip it if you want a brand with a long track record; KX-WARE is a smaller seller with little information beyond the listing.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Most plates of any pick here.
  • Stackable, per the listing.
  • Colors help kids keep track of their plate.

Cons

  • Plain, with no rim to stop food sliding.
  • Little maker information beyond the listing.

How to choose melamine plates for kids

Know what the FDA says before anything else. The FDA’s melamine tableware questions and answers say melamine does not migrate from melamine-formaldehyde tableware into most foods, and that food and drinks may be served on it. They also say the amount that migrates can increase when acidic foods are heated, and that food and drinks should not be heated on melamine dinnerware in microwave ovens. In a kitchen with kids, that means one habit: warm the food in a pot or a microwave-safe dish, then serve it on melamine.

Read the care line on the listing. Every pick here is dishwasher safe, but several say top rack only, and French Bull’s toddler set recommends hand washing. Where a listing is silent on the microwave, as the Itzy Ritzy and Bentology listings are, treat it as no.

Match the size to the child. Toddler sets run small and usually come with a bowl. An 8-inch plate suits preschool and early school years. By eight or nine, many kids eat enough to need the 10-inch Tiny Expressions plates or an adult salad plate.

Decide on dividers. Some children will not eat food that touches. Three sections (Carlisle) cover a main, rice and beans; four (Bentology) add room for fruit or a dip. Flat plates are easier to clean and to use for everything else.

Take BPA and “non-toxic” claims for what they are. Several listings say BPA-free or non-toxic. Those are the makers’ own statements, and we repeat them only as the makers state them. The FDA guidance above is the useful part.

Think about the high chair. Melamine plates do not have suction bases. If your toddler throws the plate, a silicone suction plate from our kids plates guide is the better tool until that phase passes.

Melamine at a family dinner: hot food, salsa and leftovers

Mexican home cooking is full of the two things the FDA mentions: hot food and acidic food. A few habits keep melamine in its lane.

  • Soups and caldos go into the bowl from the pot, and cool for a minute before a child eats. Do not reheat a serving in the melamine bowl in the microwave.
  • Salsas and lime are fine to serve on melamine; just do not heat them in it.
  • Leftovers get warmed in a microwave-safe dish or a pan, then moved to the plate. Our guide to reheating Mexican leftovers covers the best way to bring back rice, tamales and enchiladas.
  • Tortillas come off the comal into a cloth or warmer, not straight onto a stack of plates.

For adult plates that can take the same knocks on the patio, see our guide to the best melamine dinnerware. For bowls that can go in the microwave, our bowl sets guide covers ceramic and glass.

How we chose these seven melamine kids’ plates

We searched Amazon for melamine children’s plates and sets from French Bull, Zak Designs, Bentology, Itzy Ritzy, Tiny Expressions, Carlisle, KX-WARE and a long list of smaller sellers, and kept only those showing as in stock when we checked. Specifications and care details come from the Amazon listings; where a listing is silent, we say “Not stated”. FDA guidance comes from the FDA’s melamine tableware questions and answers. We also checked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall database for each brand here and found no recall of these products.

We left out the picks from our main kids’ plates and melamine dinnerware guides so the pages do not overlap. We also left out sets sold as “melamine bamboo” blends, since they are a different material from the plain melamine this page covers, plus wheat-straw plastic plates, sets with limited stock, and generic listings with near-identical photos. We have not used these plates ourselves, and we did not read published reviews from Wirecutter or similar outlets for this guide.

Kids melamine plate questions, answered

What are the best melamine kids plates?

Our first choice is the French Bull Kids Plate Set for everyday meals. For divided plates, the Carlisle Kingline compartment plates; for a toddler, the Itzy Ritzy set.

What are the best melamine plates for kids who are picky eaters?

A divided plate. The Carlisle Kingline has three compartments and the Bentology plate has four, and French Bull’s toddler set has a divided tray.

Is melamine safe for kids’ plates?

The FDA says food may be served on melamine tableware and that melamine does not migrate into most foods. It also says not to heat food on melamine in the microwave, and that migration can increase when acidic foods are heated. Serve on it; do not heat in it.

Can kids’ melamine plates go in the microwave?

No. Every listing here that addresses the microwave says not to use it, and the FDA says food should not be heated on melamine dinnerware in microwave ovens.

Are melamine kids’ plates dishwasher safe?

All seven are, per their listings. Tiny Expressions, Itzy Ritzy and KX-WARE say top rack, and French Bull recommends hand washing for its toddler set.

Our last word on melamine for the kids’ end of the table

Melamine is a good choice for children who have moved past suction plates but are not ready for ceramic: rigid, printed, dishwasher safe and hard to break. Start with the French Bull plates, add the Carlisle divided plates for a picky eater, and keep one rule in mind: heat in something else, serve on melamine. For the rest of the family table, our dinnerware sets guide covers plates for the adults, and our guide to taking kids to a Mexican restaurant covers dinners out.
