No Duct, No Problem? The Best Non Vented Range Hood

Ductless range hoods from ZLINE, Winflo, Summit and COMFEE' with filters included, and what recirculating hoods can and can't remove.

An under-cabinet hood sits in the space below the upper cabinets, ducted or not.

Not every kitchen can run a duct to the outside. Condos, apartments, interior walls and older homes often leave you with one option: a non-vented range hood, also called ductless or recirculating, that pulls cooking air through filters and blows it back into the room.

Done right, it catches the grease that would coat your cabinets and much of the smell of frying onions and chiles. It does not remove heat or steam. This guide explains that trade-off honestly and covers seven hoods from ZLINE, Winflo, Summit and COMFEE’ that are built for ductless use or ship with their charcoal filters in the box.

Quick verdict: which non-vented hood to buy

For most 30-inch ranges, the best non vented range hood is the ZLINE 30-Inch Recirculating Under-Cabinet Range Hood: it ships with its charcoal recirculating system, has dishwasher-safe baffle filters and a stated 600 CFM top speed. For a low-profile swap under a tight cabinet, choose the COMFEE’ 30-Inch Slim Hood. If you may add a duct later, buy the Winflo 30-Inch Convertible, which includes its charcoal filters.

Below, five standouts side by side, then all seven in full.

What a ductless hood can and cannot do

A recirculating hood has two jobs. A grease filter, metal mesh or steel baffles, catches the oily mist that rises from a pan. A charcoal filter behind it takes out much of the odor. Then the fan sends the air back into the kitchen.

Because the air never leaves the house, neither do the heat and the water vapor from boiling pots, simmering beans or a steamer full of tamales. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s guide to mold and moisture advises venting appliances that produce moisture, including stoves, to the outside where possible, and using exhaust fans or opening windows while you cook. If you can vent, vent. If you can’t, a ductless hood plus an open window or a bathroom-style exhaust fan nearby is the honest setup.

Our picks for the best non vented range hood

These seven cover the common situations: a standard 30-inch cabinet, a slim hood for low cabinets, wider 36 and 48-inch ranges, a wall with no cabinet, and a hood you might duct later. If your kitchen can vent outdoors, see our guide to the best under-cabinet range hood, which focuses on ducted performance; none of its picks are repeated here, because most of them need a separately sold kit to run ductless.

1. ZLINE 30-Inch Recirculating Under-Cabinet Range Hood – Baffles and Charcoal in the Box

Best overallZLINE 30" Recirculating Under Cabinet Range Hood in Stainless Steel (RK520-30)

ZLINE builds this model, the RK520-30, to recirculate from the start. The listing says it ships with a charcoal filter recirculating system for ductless use, so there is no separate kit to track down, which is the most common snag with convertible hoods.

Grease is caught first by stainless steel baffle filters that go in the dishwasher, then the air passes the charcoal and comes back into the kitchen. The four-speed fan runs at 270, 380, 490 and 600 CFM per ZLINE, push buttons control the fan and light, and LED lights cover the cooktop.

Baffle filters matter in a kitchen that sears carne asada or fries tortilla chips, because they handle heavy grease better than thin mesh and clean up in the dishwasher. ZLINE gives a three-year parts warranty and a lifetime motor warranty. Like every hood on this page, it cleans the air of grease and odor and then returns it, heat and steam included.

Why we like it

  • Charcoal recirculating system included, per ZLINE
  • Dishwasher-safe stainless baffle filters
  • Four speeds from 270 to 600 CFM
  • Three-year parts and lifetime motor warranty

Key specifications

Model RK520-30
Width 30 in.
Max airflow 600 CFM
Fan speeds 4 (270/380/490/600 CFM)
Filters Stainless steel baffle, dishwasher safe
Recirculation filters Charcoal system included
Lighting LED
Warranty 3-year parts, lifetime motor

Why we recommend it

It suits a 30-inch range in a kitchen with no duct path, for a cook who fries and sears often enough to want baffle filters and a strong top speed.

Skip it if you only need a light and a fan over a small stove; the slim COMFEE’ does that with much less hardware.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Ready for ductless use out of the box
  • Baffle filters for heavy grease
  • Long motor warranty

Cons

  • No noise figure in the listing
  • Charcoal still needs replacing
  • More hood than a light-duty kitchen needs

2. COMFEE' 30-Inch Slim Under-Cabinet Range Hood, 200 CFM – Low Profile, Carbon Filter Included

Best slim hoodCOMFEE' Range Hood 30 Inch Under Cabinet 200 CFM Ducted/Ductless

COMFEE’ is a Midea brand, and this slim 30-inch hood is aimed at condos and apartments. It is 5.6 inches high, 18 inches deep and 30 inches wide, per the listing, so it tucks under a cabinet without eating headroom.

Two filters come in the box: a reusable aluminum mesh filter for ducted use and an aluminum and activated carbon composite filter for ductless use. COMFEE’ suggests replacing the composite filter every 3 to 4 months, part CVU30-F. The two-speed fan is rated 200 CFM.

It ships with an E26 lamp holder, a screw pack, a long baffle and an exhaust pipe connector, so you can also vent it if the kitchen has a duct.

Why we like it

  • Carbon composite filter included for ductless use
  • Slim 5.6-inch height
  • Mesh filter for ducted use also in the box
  • Stated 200 CFM on two speeds

Key specifications

Model CVU30W2AST
Width 30 in.
Max airflow 200 CFM
Fan speeds 2
Filters Aluminum mesh, dishwasher safe
Recirculation filters Aluminum + activated carbon composite, included
Lighting E26 lamp holder
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

It suits a small apartment kitchen where a slim hood matters more than raw airflow.

Skip it if you fry or sear often; 200 CFM is the lowest stated airflow here, and the carbon filter needs changing every few months.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Very low profile
  • Both filter types included
  • Ducted or ductless

Cons

  • Lowest stated airflow on this page
  • Frequent carbon replacement
  • Lighting details thin in the listing

3. Winflo 30-Inch 600 CFM Convertible Under-Cabinet Range Hood – Ductless Now, Vented Later

Best convertibleWinflo 30 In. 600 CFM Convertible Stainless Steel Under Cabinet Range Hood with Stainless Steel Baffle Filters and Charcoal Filters and Push Button Control

If a duct might be possible one day, buy a hood that does both. Winflo’s 30-inch hood vents out through the top or back, or recirculates with charcoal filters, and the listing says the WRHF004S2 charcoal filters are included, along with installation hardware and a plug.

Two blowers give a stated 600 CFM at top speed across three fan levels, and Winflo says the noise stays under 65 dB on high. Stainless steel baffle filters catch grease and go in the dishwasher, and two LED lights cover the burners.

Winflo’s QuickInstall hardware is meant for one-person installation, which helps when you are holding a hood under a cabinet. For a vented setup later, the top vent takes a 7-inch round or a 3.25 by 10-inch duct.

Why we like it

  • Charcoal filters included for ductless use, per Winflo
  • 600 CFM from two blowers
  • Under 65 dB on high, per Winflo
  • Can be vented out later through the top or back

Key specifications

Model W111C30 / W112C30 series
Width 30 in.
Max airflow 600 CFM
Fan speeds 3
Filters Stainless steel baffle, dishwasher safe
Recirculation filters WRHF004S2 charcoal, included
Lighting 2 LED
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits a remodel where the duct is not in place yet, or a renter who may take the hood to a home with a vent.

Skip it if you will never vent it; a dedicated ductless hood is simpler.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Works ducted or ductless
  • Baffles plus charcoal in the box
  • One-person install hardware

Cons

  • Warranty not stated in the listing
  • Charcoal filters need replacing
  • Bigger and heavier than a basic insert

4. Summit 36-Inch Convertible Under-Cabinet Range Hood, Stainless – Covers a Wider Range

Best 36-inchSummit 36” Under Cabinet Convertible Range Hood

Most of the ductless hoods we found were 30 inches wide. Summit’s H36RSS covers a 36-inch range, and the listing says it works with ducted or ductless setups and includes a removable metal grease filter and a charcoal filter for use without a duct.

It is a stainless steel hood that measures 35.88 inches wide, 18.63 inches deep and 5.13 inches high, per the listing. If you add a duct later, it ships ready for standard 3 1/4 by 10-inch rectangular ducting. Note the install: Summit says it does not include a power cord and is designed to be installed by a licensed professional.

No airflow figure appears in the listing. Retailers disagree, with PC Richard at 140 CFM and Build.com at 140 and 220 CFM, so treat it as a light-duty hood. Its job is to collect grease and odor over a wide cooktop, where a 30-inch hood would leave the outer burners uncovered.

Why we like it

  • 36-inch width for wider ranges
  • Stainless steel construction, per the listing
  • Metal grease filter and charcoal filter included
  • Converts to ducted later

Key specifications

Model H36RSS
Width 35.88 in.
Max airflow Not in listing; 140 to 220 CFM per retailers
Fan speeds 2 (retailers)
Filters Removable metal grease filter
Recirculation filters Charcoal filter, included
Lighting Not stated in the listing
Warranty 1 year parts and labor

Why we recommend it

It suits a 36-inch range with no duct, in a kitchen where you want the charcoal filter in the box and stainless steel to match your appliances.

Skip it if you want a plug-in, do-it-yourself swap, or if you need strong extraction; this is a basic hood.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Wider coverage than most ductless hoods
  • Charcoal filter in the box
  • Stainless steel build

Cons

  • No airflow figure in the listing
  • No power cord; professional install advised
  • One-year warranty

5. Winflo 36-Inch Convertible Wall-Mount Range Hood – Chimney Style, Filters Included

Best wall-mountWinflo 36 In. Convertible Stainless Steel Wall Mount Range Hood with Mesh Filters

No cabinet over the range? This is the chimney-style option. Winflo’s 36-inch wall-mount hood comes with two WRHF005S2 charcoal filters for ductless use, and the listing suggests replacing them every six months. It can also vent out through a 6-inch round top outlet later.

It has a stated 400 CFM at top speed with three fan levels, push-button controls, two LED lights and dishwasher-safe aluminum mesh filters. Winflo gives the noise as under 65 dB on high.

The telescoping chimney fits ceilings from 7.5 to 8.5 feet, with an extension sold separately for taller ones, and installation hardware, flexible duct, damper and plug are included. Winflo lists a two-year limited parts warranty.

Why we like it

  • Two charcoal filters included, per Winflo
  • Fits a wall with no cabinet above the range
  • Telescoping chimney for 7.5 to 8.5-foot ceilings
  • Two-year limited parts warranty

Key specifications

Max airflow 400 CFM
Fan speeds 3
Filters Aluminum mesh, dishwasher safe
Recirculation filters 2 × WRHF005S2 charcoal, included
Lighting 2 LED
Warranty 2-year limited, parts

Why we recommend it

It suits an open wall above a 36-inch range, a newer kitchen layout or a remodel where the upper cabinet came out.

Skip it if you have an upper cabinet over the range; an under-cabinet hood fits that space.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Wall-mount style without a duct
  • Filters and hardware in the box
  • Can be vented later

Cons

  • Mesh rather than baffle filters
  • Taller ceilings need an extension
  • Charcoal replacement every six months

6. ZLINE 36-Inch Recirculating Under-Cabinet Range Hood – The Most Airflow at This Width

Most airflow at 36 inchesZLINE 36" Recirculating Under Cabinet Range Hood in Stainless Steel (RK527-36)

This is the 36-inch version of our top pick, for a range that the 30-inch model will not cover. The listing says a charcoal filter recirculating system is included for ductless use, so there is no kit to buy.

The fan has four speeds, stated at 270, 380, 490 and 600 CFM, on push-button controls, with LED lights over the cooktop. The grease filters are stainless steel baffles that go in the dishwasher, the same design as the 30-inch hood.

At 600 CFM on high it states the most airflow of the 36-inch hoods here, but remember that a ductless hood returns the air to the room, so more airflow does not remove heat or steam.

Why we like it

  • Charcoal recirculating system included
  • Four fan speeds up to 600 CFM
  • Dishwasher-safe stainless baffle filters
  • LED lighting

Key specifications

Model RK527-36
Width 36 in.
Max airflow 600 CFM
Fan speeds 4 (270, 380, 490, 600 CFM)
Filters Stainless baffles
Recirculation filters Charcoal, included
Lighting LED
Warranty 3-year parts; lifetime motor, per the listing

Why we recommend it

It suits a 36-inch range with high-heat cooking and no duct, where you want baffle filters and the charcoal in the box.

Skip it if your range is 30 inches, or if you only need a light and a fan; this is a lot of hood for a small stove.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Filters included
  • Highest stated airflow at 36 inches
  • Long stated motor warranty

Cons

  • Noise figure not stated
  • Charcoal still needs replacing
  • A lot of hood for a small stove

7. ZLINE 48-Inch Recirculating Under-Cabinet Range Hood – For Wide Pro-Style Ranges

Best for 48-inch rangesZLINE 48" Recirculating Under Cabinet Range Hood in Stainless Steel (RK527-48)

A 48-inch range with six burners and a griddle puts out a lot of grease, and ductless hoods that wide are rare. ZLINE’s RK527-48 is one, and like the 30-inch ZLINE above, the listing says it includes a charcoal filter recirculating system.

It has the same four fan speeds, 270 to 600 CFM, push-button controls, LED lighting and dishwasher-safe stainless baffle filters. ZLINE also sells it as the 36-inch RK527-36 for a mid-size range.

Be realistic about scale: a wide griddle session sends a lot of heat and steam into the room, and a recirculating hood will not remove those. It does catch the grease and much of the smell before they reach the cabinets.

Why we like it

  • Covers a full 48-inch range
  • Charcoal recirculating system included, per ZLINE
  • Dishwasher-safe stainless baffle filters
  • Three-year parts, lifetime motor warranty

Key specifications

Model RK527-48
Width 48 in.
Max airflow 600 CFM
Fan speeds 4 (270/380/490/600 CFM)
Filters Stainless steel baffle, dishwasher safe
Recirculation filters Charcoal system included
Lighting LED
Warranty 3-year parts, lifetime motor

Why we recommend it

It suits a pro-style 48-inch range in a kitchen that cannot be ducted, such as a condo or an interior wall.

Skip it if your range is narrower; ZLINE’s 30-inch or 36-inch versions are the better fit.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Rare ductless option at 48 inches
  • Same proven setup as the 30-inch ZLINE
  • Long motor warranty

Cons

  • Big hood for a recirculating design
  • Cannot remove heat or steam from a busy griddle
  • Noise not stated

How to choose a non-vented range hood

Match the width to the cooktop

A hood should be at least as wide as the cooking surface, so the outer burners are covered. That is why this list runs from 30 to 48 inches; for a 24-inch stove, look for a 24-inch hood of the same type. Measure the cabinet opening too; under-cabinet hoods need the cabinet above to be the same width.

Check what is in the box

Many convertible hoods are sold ducted, with the charcoal kit as an extra. Every hood here is either ductless by design or, per its listing, ships with its charcoal filters. When you compare others, read the listing for the words “included” or “sold separately”.

Grease filters: baffle or mesh

Stainless baffle filters, on the ZLINE and the 30-inch Winflo, handle heavy grease from searing and frying and go in the dishwasher. Aluminum mesh is lighter and also washable. In a ductless hood the grease filter also protects the charcoal, which clogs fast if grease reaches it.

Steam rising from a small pot on a gas burner beside a tiled wall
Steam like this stays in the kitchen when a hood recirculates.

Plan for charcoal replacement

Charcoal cannot be washed. Winflo suggests replacing it about every six months, and COMFEE’ every three to four months. Check that replacement filters for your model are easy to buy before you choose.

Airflow and noise

Stated airflow on this page runs from 200 to 600 CFM, and the Summit listing gives no figure at all. More airflow pulls more air through the filters, but it is also louder; Winflo is the only maker here that states a noise figure, under 65 dB on high.

How we chose these seven ductless hoods

We searched for hoods built for ductless use and convertible hoods that ship with recirculation filters, from makers with their own product lines. Every model was checked with Amazon’s product data for stock, model number and listed features, and kept only if it was in stock when we wrote this. Specifications come from each maker’s listing, with “Not stated” where the maker gives no figure. We did not install or run these hoods ourselves.

We looked at FOTILE, Cosmo, Hauslane, Zephyr and CIARRA too, and at Broan-NuTone’s non-ducted inserts, which were not in stock when we checked. The in-stock models we found from those makers either vent only or need a recirculating kit bought separately, so they belong on our ducted page instead. We also searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall database for each brand. We found no range hood recall for any of these brands. ZLINE has recalled certain gas ranges and built-in wall ovens, and Summit-brand electric ranges were recalled in 2017; those recalls do not cover range hoods.

Non-vented range hood questions, answered

Do ductless range hoods actually work?

For grease and odor, yes, within limits: the filters catch grease and the charcoal takes out much of the smell. For heat and steam, no, because the air returns to the room. The EPA advises venting stoves outside where possible.

How often do I change the charcoal filter?

Follow your maker. Winflo suggests every six months, and COMFEE’ every three to four months. Cook more, change more often.

Can I install a non-vented hood myself?

Winflo includes a plug and one-person install hardware, and COMFEE’ ships its hood with a screw pack and a user manual with step-by-step instructions. Summit says its hood is designed to be installed by a licensed professional. If you are unsure about wiring, call an electrician.

Is a ductless hood enough for a gas stove?

A gas flame adds heat and water vapor to the air, and a recirculating hood does not take them out of the house. Open a window or run an exhaust fan that vents outside while you cook, as the EPA suggests. If you are choosing a new cooktop, an induction cooktop avoids combustion altogether.

Our final pick for a kitchen without a duct

Buy the ZLINE 30-inch recirculating hood if you cook with high heat and want baffle filters and the charcoal in the box. Choose the COMFEE’ for a low-profile swap, the Winflo convertible if a duct may come later, and the wider Summit, Winflo or ZLINE models for 36 and 48-inch ranges.
