Owala’s listings can look like a wall of color names, and it is easy to miss the few real differences underneath: size, shape, whether the lid twists or flips, and steel or plastic. The real choice is about how you carry it and what you put in it.
This guide is for people who have already chosen Owala and want the right bottle. We give the sizes and models, say who each one suits, and name a rival where another bottle does better. To compare other makers, read our water bottle guide. For children’s bottles, see our kids water bottle guide.

Quick verdict: which Owala water bottle to buy
The FreeSip 24 Ounce is the right bottle for most people. Choose the Sway 30 Ounce if you want a big bottle with a handle that fits most car cup holders. Go for the Twist if you also want hot drinks, and the Tritan 25 Ounce if you want it light and dishwasher safe.

Our picks for the best owala water bottle
Eight sizes and models, one listing each. Color is your own call.
1. Owala FreeSip Insulated Bottle, 24 Ounce – The Size Most People Want

The FreeSip’s selling point is its spout: you can sip upright through the built-in straw, or tilt the bottle back and swig from the opening. A push button opens a lid that covers the spout, and the loop doubles as a lock. Shannon Garlin at Shop TODAY carried this size, and after a 60-minute hot yoga class at 105 degrees F she wrote, “I was shocked (and thankful) to find my water still chilled.” A bottle that tipped in her bag did not leak.
The trade-off is cleaning. Garlin says it “does have small crevices that are hard to reach with just a sponge,” and GearLab agrees, adding that the lock on the flip cap is cumbersome. The listing says this bottle is wider than standard cup holders, so check yours, and FreeSip listings say not to use it with hot liquids. This model also appears in another color on our water bottle guide; we repeat it because a guide to choosing an Owala without its most familiar size would make little sense.
Why we like it
- Sip or swig from one spout
- Independent reports of cold water and no leaks
- Button lid keeps the spout covered
- Loop doubles as a lock, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | C06060 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 24 oz |
| Spout | FreeSip straw plus swig |
| Material | Insulated stainless steel |
| Hot drinks? | No |
| Cup holder (listing) | Wider than standard |
| Care | Hand wash cup, per sibling listings |
| Size | 3.2 x 3.2 x 10.7 in |
Why we recommend it
It suits most people who drink cold water through the day and want a choice of how they drink it.
Skip it if you want a simple bottle to clean; those small crevices are the most common complaint.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Two ways to drink
- Good independent reports on cold and leaks
- Handy carry loop
Cons
- Hard to clean fully
- Cold drinks only
- Wider than standard cup holders
2. Owala FreeSip Insulated Bottle, 19 Ounce – Smallest Adult Size

This is the smallest standard FreeSip we found, at 19 ounces and 9.9 inches tall. It uses the same spout, button lid and insulation, with the same claim of cold for up to 24 hours. The listing is the clearest of the group on materials and care: BPA, lead and phthalate-free, hand wash the cup, dishwasher-safe lid, and not for hot liquids.
A smaller bottle fits a small bag and a smaller hand, and it is lighter when full. You will refill it more often. We read no independent review of this size, so the performance reports here apply to larger versions of the same design.
Why we like it
- Same spout in a smaller body
- Dishwasher-safe lid, per the listing
- Lighter to carry
Key specifications
| Model | C06698 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 19 oz |
| Spout | FreeSip straw plus swig |

| Size | 3.2 x 3.2 x 9.9 in |
Why we recommend it
It suits people with small bags or who refill often at a desk.
Skip it if you drink a lot during a long shift; you will spend the day refilling it.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Compact
- Clear care directions
- Light
Cons
- Frequent refills
- Cold only
- No review of this size that we read
3. Owala FreeSip Insulated Bottle, 32 Ounce – A Full Day of Water

CleverHiker’s Marion Tucker field-tested this size on hikes and climbs in Southern Utah and wrote in 2025, “Despite a full day of sun exposure, the Owala kept our water cool for the entirety of the day.” Ice lasted several hours. Drop tests left only minor dents and scratches, though she expects the plastic lid parts, especially the locking loop and spout, to break first.
Garlin at Shop TODAY also bought this size for harder workouts. Tucker lists the bottle as leakproof, not for hot liquids and not dishwasher safe; the 19-ounce listing says the lid can go in the dishwasher, so hand washing the body is the safe reading. This listing warns that it is not compatible with standard car cup holders, and suggests door pockets or bags instead. That is a real point for commuters.
Why we like it
- Full day of cool water in desert sun, per CleverHiker
- Body came through drop tests with minor marks
- Stated limited lifetime warranty
Key specifications
| Model | C06105 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 32 oz |
| Spout | FreeSip straw plus swig |
| Material | Insulated stainless steel |
| Hot drinks? | No |
| Cup holder (listing) | Not compatible with standard |
| Care | Hand wash cup |
| Size | 3.4 x 3.4 x 10.6 in |
Why we recommend it
It suits gym-goers, hikers and anyone who wants fewer trips to the tap.
Skip it if it needs to ride in your car’s cup holder: the listing says it will not fit.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Strong independent report
- Lasts a long stretch between fills
- Lifetime warranty stated
Cons
- Will not fit standard cup holders
- Plastic lid parts are the weak point
- Cold only
4. Owala FreeSip Insulated Bottle, 40 Ounce – For Big Drinkers

At 40 ounces, this FreeSip holds as much as a large tumbler but keeps the sealed lid and carry loop. It weighs about 1.3 pounds empty on the listing, and it stands 11.6 inches tall, so full of water it is heavy for all-day carrying, and it does not fit standard car cup holders either.
It suits a desk, a job site or a long day at a kitchen counter, where one fill is the goal. We read no independent test of this size, so what we say about the FreeSip’s spout and lid comes from reviews of smaller versions. If you want a big bottle with a handle, the Sway below is the better shape.
Why we like it
- Biggest FreeSip we found
- Same sealed lid as the smaller sizes
- Fewer refills
Key specifications
| Model | C06112 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 40 oz |
| Spout | FreeSip straw plus swig |
| Material | Insulated stainless steel |
| Hot drinks? | No |
| Cup holder (listing) | Not compatible with standard |
| Care | Hand wash cup |
| Size | 3.6 x 3.6 x 11.6 in |
Why we recommend it
It suits people who stay in one place and want a large single fill.
Skip it if you carry it far; the listing’s empty weight is the heaviest of the FreeSips here.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Largest capacity
- Sealed lid
- Fewer refills
Cons
- Heavy when full
- Too big for standard cup holders
- No review of this size that we read

5. Owala FreeSip Sway Bottle, 30 Ounce – A Handle and Easier Fit

The Sway is the FreeSip reshaped with a bucket handle and a base the listing says fits most car cup holders, which addresses the biggest practical complaint about the larger straight bottles. GearLab makes the FreeSip Sway its favorite straw bottle for easy sipping, but it adds, “Our least favorite detail of this award-winning design is how difficult it is to clean.”
It holds 30 ounces and, like most of the range, is not for hot liquids. The lid is dishwasher safe and can be taken apart, and the cup should be hand washed, according to the listing. If you want a large bottle in the car, this is the Owala we would look at first. We could not confirm which size GearLab tested, so apply its notes generally.
Why we like it
- GearLab’s favorite straw bottle for easy sipping
- Bucket handle
- Fits most car cup holders, per the listing
- Lid comes apart for cleaning, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | C08907 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 30 oz |
| Spout | FreeSip straw plus swig |
| Material | Triple-layer insulated stainless steel |
| Hot drinks? | No |
| Cup holder (listing) | Fits most, per listing |
| Care | Hand wash cup; lid dishwasher safe |
| Size | 3.9 x 4.1 x 10.5 in |
Why we recommend it
It suits drivers and commuters who want a big bottle and would rather carry it by a handle.
Skip it if cleaning is what you care about most: GearLab says this design is hard to clean.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Best-supported Owala shape in the evidence we read
- Cup holder friendly, per the listing
- Comfortable handle, per the listing
Cons
- Hard to clean, per GearLab
- Cold only
- Wider than the straight bottles
6. Owala FreeSip Twist Bottle, 24 Ounce – Takes Hot Drinks Too

Most FreeSips here say no hot liquids. The Twist is the exception. Its listing says this double-walled bottle holds hot, cold and carbonated drinks, and it uses a leak-proof twist-top in place of the push-button flip lid. That makes it the one to buy if you want the same spout for coffee in the morning and water in the afternoon.
It is slim at 2.9 inches and tall at 11.9. Although slimmer than the standard 24, the listing still warns it is wider than standard cup holders, so check before relying on it. A twist-top will usually take two hands to open. We read no independent review of the Twist.
Why we like it
- Hot, cold and carbonated, per the listing
- Leak-proof twist-top, per the listing
- BPA, lead and phthalate-free, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | C06861 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 24 oz |
| Spout | FreeSip straw plus swig, twist-top |
| Material | Insulated stainless steel |
| Hot drinks? | Yes, per listing |
| Cup holder (listing) | Wider than standard |
| Care | Not stated on this listing |
| Size | 2.9 x 2.9 x 11.9 in |
Why we recommend it
It suits people who want one bottle for coffee and water.
Skip it if you want one-handed opening; a twist-top is not built for it.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Handles hot drinks, per the listing
- Slim
- Handles carbonation, per the listing
Cons
- Twist lid is slower
- Tall
- Listing-only evidence
7. Owala FreeSip Tritan Bottle, 25 Ounce – Light and Dishwasher Safe

This is the FreeSip with no steel. It is Eastman Tritan plastic, which the listing says resists stains and odors, and it weighs about 0.4 pounds on the listing against 0.9 for the steel 24-ounce. It is the only one here whose listing calls it dishwasher safe as a whole, which matters given how many reviewers complain about cleaning this design.
You give up the steel bottle’s insulation, so expect cold water to warm up much as it does in any plastic bottle. We read no independent test of this model, so it rests on the listing.
Why we like it
- Dishwasher safe, per the listing
- Much lighter than steel
- Stated limited lifetime warranty
Key specifications
| Model | C03778 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 25 oz |
| Spout | FreeSip straw plus swig |
| Material | Eastman Tritan plastic |
| Hot drinks? | Not stated |
| Cup holder (listing) | Listing says friendly base |
| Care | Dishwasher safe |
| Size | 2.8 x 2.8 x 9.8 in |
Why we recommend it
It suits people who want the spout without the weight, and those who insist on a dishwasher.
Skip it if you want cold water hours later; no insulation is claimed here.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Lightest here
- Dishwasher safe
- Warranty stated
Cons
- No stated insulation
- Plastic body
- Listing-only evidence
8. Owala SmoothSip Slider Coffee Cup, 20 Ounce – Owala’s Coffee Mug

SmoothSip is Owala’s separate line for coffee. The stainless steel tumbler has a ceramic-coated interior, which Owala says avoids metallic taste, and a sliding top the listing calls completely leak-proof. It keeps drinks hot for hours and cold up to 24, says the listing, without stating how many hours hot.
It does not have the FreeSip spout, so it is a mug rather than a water bottle. The cup is hand wash and the lid dishwasher safe, with a limited lifetime warranty stated. We read no independent review of it. If coffee on the road is the whole job, compare it with our coffee go mug guide first.
Why we like it
- Ceramic-coated interior, per the listing
- Slide-top lid
- Limited lifetime warranty, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | C09125 |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 20 oz |
| Spout | SmoothSip slider |
| Material | Stainless steel, ceramic-coated inside |
| Hot drinks? | Yes, per listing |
| Cup holder (listing) | Not stated on this listing |
| Care | Hand wash cup; lid dishwasher safe |
| Size | 3.4 x 3.4 x 8.1 in |
Why we recommend it
It suits an Owala fan who wants a matching mug for hot coffee.
Skip it if you want a water bottle; this one has no straw.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Built for hot drinks
- Slide lid
- Warranty stated
Cons
- No stated hot hours
- No straw
- Listing-only evidence
Where Owala falls short, and who to look at instead
- Cleaning. This is the complaint the reviewers we read share. Garlin needed a straw cleaner, Tucker notes the bottle is not dishwasher safe, and GearLab calls the Sway difficult to clean. Take the lid apart and keep a small brush nearby.
- Hot drinks. Only the Twist and SmoothSip say they take hot liquids. Several others say not to.
- Cup holders. The 24 is wider than standard, and the 32 and 40 are not compatible with standard car cup holders, according to their listings. The Sway says it fits most.
- A named rival. GearLab’s overall favorite is the Hydro Flask Wide Mouth, which it ranks above the Owala models. If you also want to carry coffee, look there. Our water bottle guide compares them.

How to choose an Owala water bottle
1. Choose by how you carry it
If it rides in a car cup holder, check the listing, because several sizes do not fit. If it rides in a gym bag or on a desk, any of them will work. A handle matters if you carry it full.
2. Be honest about how much you drink
Nineteen ounces is little more than two glasses. Forty is five. Weight rises with size, and a full 40-ounce bottle is not a light thing to carry. If you can refill easily, take a smaller one.
3. Decide about hot drinks now
If you want coffee in the same bottle, only the Twist will do among FreeSip models. Do not ignore this on the others: the listings tell you not to.

4. Plan for the cleaning
Hand wash the body, and put the lid in the dishwasher where the listing allows it. A straw brush solved it for Garlin, and if you put anything other than water in it, wash it the same day.
How we picked these eight bottles
We pulled Owala listings from the Amazon API on November 3, 2026, kept those new and in plain stock, all sold by Amazon, and took one listing per size and model. We skipped licensed character designs and colors. One size repeats a model on our water bottle guide, with the reason given. We read CleverHiker’s and Shop TODAY’s reviews, both from 2025, and GearLab’s 2026 water bottle roundup. CNN’s review would not open, so we do not cite it. We did not test anything ourselves.
Owala water bottle questions, answered
What size Owala should I buy?
For most people, 24 ounces. Pick 32 for long workouts, and 19 if your bag is small.
Is the Owala FreeSip dishwasher safe?
Mostly not. Listings say to hand wash the cup, while the lid can go in the dishwasher. The Tritan model is the exception and is dishwasher safe, according to its listing.
Can you put coffee in an Owala?
Only in the Twist and the SmoothSip. CleverHiker and the listings say the standard FreeSip cannot be used with hot liquids.
Does Owala fit in a cup holder?
Not every size. The Sway says it fits most car cup holders, while the 32 and 40 ounce FreeSips say they do not fit standard ones.
Has Owala been recalled?
The CPSC recall database we searched on November 3, 2026 returned no recall under the names Owala or Trove Brands. That is not a guarantee, so check cpsc.gov for your own product.
Our final pick from the Owala range
Start with the FreeSip 24, and keep a straw brush nearby. Move up to the Sway if you drive with it. And when water will not do, call to order from Julia’s at (346) 546-8283.
