Easy to Clean: The Best Panini Press Removable Plates Picks

Eight contact grills with removable or dishwasher-safe plates, compared by plate type, heat control, size and warranty, plus how to choose one.

The worst part of owning a panini press is cleaning it. Melted cheese runs into the grooves, oil from a torta bakes onto the hinge side, and with fixed plates you are left wiping a hot, heavy appliance with a damp towel and hoping no water reaches the element.

Removable plates fix that. Pop them out once they cool, soak or wash them in the sink, and many go straight into the dishwasher. This guide narrows our main panini grill roundup down to that one feature, with eight contact grills whose plates come out, and one whose whole body goes into the dishwasher.

Quick verdict: which removable-plate press to buy

For most kitchens, the Breville Smart Grill is the one to buy: its plates lift out and go in the dishwasher, the 1800-watt elements are embedded in the plates themselves, and it opens flat to a 260-square-inch grill. For less money, the Cuisinart Griddler Grill & Panini Press has removable ceramic nonstick plates and a three-year warranty. If you want the grill to judge doneness for you, the T-fal OptiGrill XL reads the thickness of the food and sets the cooking time.

Below, the five standouts side by side, then all eight in detail.

Eight picks for the best panini press removable plates make easy to clean

Our main panini grill guide covers the Breville Sear and Press, the Cuisinart Griddler Deluxe, the Chefman 5-in-1, the Dash MultiMaker and others, so none of those listings appear here. Two makers, Breville and Cuisinart, do appear on both pages, but with different machines: the Smart Grill and two other Griddler models, picked because their removable plates are central to the design. Each pick lists the same eight specifications, and each ends with one honest reason to skip it.

1. Breville Smart Grill – Elements in the Plates, Plates in the Dishwasher

Best overallBreville BGR820XL Smart Grill

The Smart Grill is Breville’s larger contact grill, and it solves a problem most removable-plate grills create. Usually, making plates removable means the heating elements stay in the body and heat the plates from below. Breville instead embeds the 1800-watt elements in the plates themselves and uses an electronic thermostat to sense and control the temperature, which the maker says gives consistent, high searing heat.

Opened flat, it becomes a 260-square-inch grill and griddle surface for steak, seafood, eggs or pancakes; closed, it is a contact grill and sandwich press. An LCD tells you when the plates are preheated and counts down the cooking time, and a removable drip tray works in both flat and contact modes.

For cleaning, the plates pop out and go into the dishwasher, according to Breville’s listing, and the PFOA-free nonstick also wipes clean by hand. The warranty is a one-year replacement.

Why we like it

  • Removable, dishwasher-safe plates (listing)
  • 1800 W elements embedded in the plates
  • Opens flat to 260 sq in
  • LCD preheat signal and countdown timer

Key specifications

Model BGR820XL
Power 1800 W
Cooking area 260 sq in opened flat
Plate type Removable PFOA-free nonstick, elements embedded
Dishwasher safe Plates, yes
Temperature control Electronic thermostat, LCD display
Opens flat Yes
Warranty 1-year replacement

Why we recommend it

For the household that grills steak and chicken as often as it presses tortas and quesadillas, and wants a grill that cleans up in the dishwasher. It is the most capable machine on this page.

Skip it if counter space is tight; this is a large grill, and Breville’s warranty is shorter than Cuisinart’s.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Strong heat from embedded elements
  • Large flat-open surface
  • Dishwasher-safe plates

Cons

  • Bulky
  • One-year warranty

2. Cuisinart Griddler Grill & Panini Press – Ceramic Plates, Three-Year Warranty

Best valueCuisinart Griddler Indoor Grill and Panini Press

This is the simpler member of Cuisinart’s Griddler family, model GR-11NAS, and not the Griddler Deluxe on our main panini page. It cooks three ways: as a contact grill, as a panini press, or opened flat as a full grill with double the cooking surface.

The plates are removable and coated in a ceramic nonstick, and Cuisinart’s listing title calls them dishwasher-safe. The top cover is hinged and floating, so it adjusts to the thickness of a pressed torta or a thin quesadilla, and adjustable front feet tilt the grill for better grease drainage.

Temperature is preset rather than adjustable, with Power On and Ready-to-Cook lights. That keeps it simple for sandwiches, but it means you cannot turn the heat down for delicate fillings. Cuisinart backs it with a three-year limited warranty, the longest here alongside its sibling below.

Why we like it

  • Removable, dishwasher-safe ceramic nonstick plates (listing)
  • Floating cover adjusts to food thickness
  • Opens flat for double the surface
  • Three-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model GR-11NAS
Power Not stated
Cooking area Not stated; doubles when opened flat
Plate type Removable ceramic nonstick
Dishwasher safe Plates, yes
Temperature control Preset, with ready light
Opens flat Yes
Warranty 3-year limited

Why we recommend it

For cooks who mostly press sandwiches and quesadillas and want plates that go in the dishwasher without paying for a premium grill.

Skip it if you want to set the temperature yourself; this model has a preset heat only.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Dishwasher-safe ceramic plates
  • Long warranty
  • Simple to use

Cons

  • No adjustable temperature
  • Wattage and cooking area not stated

3. T-fal OptiGrill XL – Reads the Thickness, Times the Cook

Best automaticT-Fal OptiGrill Stainless Steel XL Electric Grill

The OptiGrill XL measures how thick the food is when you close the lid and adjusts the cooking automatically, according to T-fal. Nine preset programs cover burgers, poultry, fish, sandwiches and more, and the grill doubles as a panini press, griddle and sandwich maker.

T-fal rates it at 1800 watts and says it cooks six to eight servings at once. The plates are angled toward a front juice tray, which the maker says removes up to 44% of the fat from a 20% fat burger; that figure is T-fal’s own test, not ours.

Both the nonstick plates and the juice tray come out. The Amazon listing says “removable plates” without spelling out the dishwasher; retailer listings such as Abt describe the plates and tray as dishwasher-safe, so check the manual for your unit. The warranty is one year.

Why we like it

  • Sensor adjusts cooking to food thickness (listing)
  • Nine automatic programs
  • 1800 W, six to eight servings
  • Removable plates and juice tray

Key specifications

Model OptiGrill XL (7211002168)
Power 1800 W
Cooking area 6 to 8 servings
Plate type Removable nonstick, angled
Dishwasher safe Plates and tray per retailer listings
Temperature control 9 automatic programs
Opens flat Not stated
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

For the cook who grills meat and fish often and would rather the grill decide when it is done. For sandwiches, the sandwich program takes the guesswork out of a busy weeknight.

Skip it if you mostly press sandwiches; the sensor programs are built around meat, and a simpler press does the sandwich job for less.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Automatic doneness
  • Large capacity
  • Removable plates and tray

Cons

  • Dishwasher claim only on retailer listings
  • Does not state that it opens flat

4. All-Clad AutoSense Indoor Grill – Automatic Programs Plus a Manual Mode

Best premium automaticAll-Clad Electric Indoor Grill

All-Clad’s AutoSense grill works on the same idea as the OptiGrill: it adjusts the cooking time to the thickness of the food, without a thermometer probe. An indicator walks you through five stages of cooking, and there are nine automatic programs.

Where it differs is the manual mode with four temperatures, which is useful for sandwiches and quesadillas, where you want a set heat rather than a meat program. All-Clad rates it at 1800 watts and says it cooks for up to eight people.

The listing is clear on cleaning: the plates are removable and dishwasher-safe, and a juice tray catches drips. The warranty is described only as a limited All-Clad Electrics warranty, without a length.

Why we like it

  • Removable, dishwasher-safe plates (listing)
  • Nine programs plus a four-temperature manual mode
  • Thickness sensing without a probe
  • 1800 W, up to eight servings

Key specifications

Model PG715851
Power 1800 W
Cooking area Up to 8 servings
Plate type Removable nonstick
Dishwasher safe Plates, yes
Temperature control 9 programs, manual mode with 4 temperatures
Opens flat Not stated
Warranty Limited; length not stated

Why we recommend it

For cooks who want automatic grilling for meat and a plain manual heat for sandwiches, in one machine with plates that go in the dishwasher.

Skip it if you want a clear warranty term before you buy; the listing does not give one.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Manual mode for sandwiches
  • Dishwasher-safe plates
  • Large capacity

Cons

  • Warranty length not stated
  • Large footprint

5. Cuisinart Griddler with Smoke-Less Mode – Reversible Plates and Real Temperature Control

Best adjustable heatCuisinart Griddler with Smoke-Less Mode

The GR-6SNAS is the Griddler for cooks who want control. Its reversible plates give five setups: full grill, full griddle, half grill and half griddle, contact grill, and panini press. The temperature is variable from 175°F to 450°F, with preset programs for beef, pork, poultry and fish and a display for time and temperature.

Smoke-Less mode combines grease-reducing plates, an adjustable plate tilt and temperature control to cut smoke, according to Cuisinart. Opened flat, it grills up to eight burgers at once.

The Amazon listing does not state dishwasher use. Retailer listings, including Abt, describe the plates as removable, reversible and dishwasher-safe, and one independent review site suggests hand-washing to make the nonstick last longer. The warranty is three years, limited.

Why we like it

  • Reversible plates for five cooking setups (listing)
  • Variable heat from 175°F to 450°F
  • Grills up to eight burgers opened flat
  • Three-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model GR-6SNAS
Power Not stated
Cooking area Up to 8 burgers opened flat
Plate type Removable, reversible grill/griddle
Dishwasher safe Plates per retailer listings
Temperature control 175°F to 450°F, 4 presets
Opens flat Yes
Warranty 3-year limited

Why we recommend it

For cooks who want to turn the heat down for cheesy sandwiches and up for steak, with reversible plates and the Griddler’s long warranty.

Skip it if you only make sandwiches; the simpler Griddler above does that for less.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Wide temperature range
  • Reversible plates
  • Three-year warranty

Cons

  • Dishwasher use not stated on Amazon
  • More settings than a sandwich press needs

6. Hamilton Beach 4-in-1 Indoor Grill & Griddle – Push-Button Plates for Breakfast and Lunch

Best grill and griddleHamilton Beach 4-in-1 Electric Indoor Grill & Electric Griddle Combo

Hamilton Beach’s 4-in-1 swaps its plates with a push button, so you can set it up as a contact grill, a full griddle, half grill and half griddle, or a tilted bacon cooker on its kickstand. Closed, it presses paninis; opened 180 degrees, its 100-square-inch surface doubles to 200.

The listing says the removable nonstick plates go in the dishwasher once cooled, and the nonstick is PFAS-free according to Hamilton Beach. Temperature is adjustable up to 400°F, with a preheat light.

It is the most breakfast-friendly grill here: eggs and pancakes on the griddle side, chorizo or bacon on the grill side, then the same machine presses tortas at lunch. The warranty is one year.

Why we like it

  • Removable, dishwasher-safe plates with push-button release (listing)
  • Interchangeable grill and griddle plates
  • 100 sq in closed, 200 sq in open
  • Adjustable heat up to 400°F

Key specifications

Model 25601
Power Not stated
Cooking area 100 sq in; 200 sq in open
Plate type Removable PFAS-free nonstick grill and griddle
Dishwasher safe Plates, yes
Temperature control Adjustable to 400°F
Opens flat Yes, 180 degrees
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

For families who want one appliance for breakfast griddling and lunchtime sandwiches, and plates that go in the dishwasher afterwards.

Skip it if you want a floating hinge for very thick tortas; the listing does not mention one.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Grill and griddle plates included
  • Dishwasher-safe plates
  • Big open surface

Cons

  • One-year warranty
  • Wattage not stated

7. George Foreman 4-Serving Removable Plate Grill – The Classic, With Plates That Come Out

Best compactGeorge Foreman 4-Serving Indoor Grill with Removable Plates

This is the familiar sloped George Foreman grill in its removable-plate version. The 60-square-inch surface fits a main course for four, according to the maker, and George Foreman calls it its most popular size.

The plates come out and go in the dishwasher, the listing says. They use George Foreman’s Advanced George Tough nonstick, which the maker says is three times more durable than its earlier coating, and improved heating elements that it says preheat 35% faster.

As with every George Foreman grill, the plates slope toward the front so fat runs off; for a panini that means the sandwich sits at a slight angle, which matters little for a pressed torta or quesadilla. Temperature controls are not listed. The warranty is three years, limited.

Why we like it

  • Removable, dishwasher-safe plates (listing)
  • Compact 60 sq in surface for four
  • Faster preheat than the previous model (maker)
  • Three-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model GRP1060B
Power Not stated
Cooking area 60 sq in, 4 servings
Plate type Removable Advanced George Tough nonstick
Dishwasher safe Plates, yes
Temperature control Not stated
Opens flat No
Warranty 3-year limited

Why we recommend it

For small kitchens and apartments that want a cheap, compact grill whose plates go straight in the dishwasher.

Skip it if you want to adjust the heat or open it flat; it does neither.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Compact
  • Dishwasher-safe plates
  • Three-year warranty

Cons

  • No temperature control listed
  • Sloped plates, does not open flat

8. George Foreman Fully Submersible 4-Serving Grill – The Whole Grill Goes in the Dishwasher

Washes wholeGeorge Foreman Fully Submersible 4-Serving Grill

This one takes a different route to the same goal. The plates do not come out; instead, you unplug and remove the control panel, and the rest of the grill goes into the dishwasher, according to George Foreman. That cleans the hinge and the edges that removable plates leave behind.

It has the same four-serving size as the grill above but takes 35% less counter space, the maker says, and stores upright. The hinge adjusts by three-quarters of an inch for thicker food, and George Foreman notes that food of even thickness browns best, which is worth remembering for a lopsided torta.

The nonstick is the maker’s tougher coating, and George Foreman advises against aerosol sprays to keep it working. The warranty is three years, limited.

Why we like it

  • Whole grill dishwasher-safe once the control panel is removed (listing)
  • Stores upright in 35% less counter space
  • Adjustable 3/4-inch hinge
  • Three-year limited warranty

Key specifications

Model GRES060BS
Power Not stated
Cooking area 4 servings
Plate type Fixed nonstick; control panel detaches
Dishwasher safe Whole grill, without control panel
Temperature control Not stated
Opens flat No
Warranty 3-year limited

Why we recommend it

For anyone who has given up on a grill because of the hinge and the gunk around the edges. It is the most complete clean on this page.

Skip it if your dishwasher is small; the whole grill body has to fit on the rack.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Cleans the hinge and edges too
  • Upright storage
  • Three-year warranty

Cons

  • Plates are not removable
  • No listed temperature control

How to choose a panini press with removable plates

Removable is not always dishwasher-safe

Some makers say the plates come out; fewer say outright that they go in the dishwasher. Breville, All-Clad, Hamilton Beach, Cuisinart’s GR-11NAS and the George Foreman removable-plate grill all state it on the listing. For the OptiGrill XL and the Griddler GR-6SNAS, only retailer listings say so. Read the manual before the first wash.

Where the heat comes from

In most removable-plate grills, the elements stay in the body and heat the plates from beneath. Breville’s Smart Grill puts them in the plates. Either works for sandwiches; for searing meat, heat that is closer to the food helps.

A floating hinge

A torta on a bolillo is far thicker than a quesadilla. A floating or adjustable hinge lets the top plate sit flat on both, so the sandwich presses evenly instead of being squashed at the back.

Adjustable temperature

Cheese-heavy fillings melt best at a medium heat; grilling steak needs high heat. Presets are simpler, but if you cook more than sandwiches, a dial or digital control is worth having.

Size and storage

Big grills that open flat are versatile but need a cupboard to match. If space is tight, a compact four-serving grill, or one that stores upright, makes more sense.

How we picked these eight contact grills

We started from the contact grills and panini presses the Amazon listing data showed as in stock, kept those from established makers whose plates are removable or whose body is dishwasher-safe, and removed every listing already on our main panini grill page and our quesadilla maker vs panini press comparison. Specifications come from each Amazon listing and, where noted, from retailer listings (Abt for the OptiGrill and the Griddler GR-6SNAS). We also searched the CPSC recall database for each maker’s indoor grills and panini presses and found no recall notice for these models at the time of writing; that is not a guarantee, so check cpsc.gov for your model. We have not used these grills in Julia’s kitchen.

Removable-plate panini press questions, answered

What is the best panini press with removable plates?

The Breville Smart Grill, for its dishwasher-safe removable plates, 1800-watt elements embedded in the plates and flat-open grilling. The Cuisinart Griddler GR-11NAS is the value choice.

What does Consumer Reports say about panini presses with removable plates?

We do not quote Consumer Reports, because its ratings sit behind a subscription and we cannot verify or cite them here. This page relies on maker specifications and retailer listings instead, and we say where each fact comes from.

Can you put panini press plates in the dishwasher?

Only if the maker says so. Several on this page do, but hand-washing with a soft sponge is gentler on any nonstick coating. Always let the plates cool before removing them.

Are removable plates worth it for quesadillas?

Yes, if you make them often. Cheese that leaks onto fixed plates bakes on and is hard to reach; removable plates can soak in the sink. For quesadillas specifically, our quesadilla maker vs panini press guide compares the two tools.

Can a panini press reheat Mexican leftovers?

It does well with tortas, quesadillas and burritos, crisping the outside while the inside warms. Our guide to reheating Mexican leftovers covers which dishes suit it.
