The pint glass is the workhorse of every bar. It holds a can of beer with room for a head, it doubles as the glass half of a cocktail shaker, and it takes iced tea, water or a michelada just as well. At home it is often the only glass you reach for, which is a good reason to buy one that survives the dishwasher and the occasional knock against the sink.
Not all pint glasses are the same, though. The classic American shaker pint is a straight-sided, tapered 16-ounce glass; the British nonic has a bulge near the top that stops the rims from sticking when you stack them; pub glasses flare at the top; and some makers now sell tall, thin-walled pints in lead-free crystal. This guide explains those differences and names seven sets worth buying.

Quick verdict: which pint glasses to buy
For most homes, the best pint glasses for home are the Libbey Restaurant Basics DuraTuff 16 oz Pint Glasses: the same 1639HT shaker pint restaurants buy by the case, with a DuraTuff treatment that foodservice retailers say strengthens the upper glass and rim against chipping. If you want a thinner, finer glass, the Krosno Chill beer glasses are lead-free crystal, according to Krosno. For a full imperial-style pour with room for foam, choose the JoyJolt Grant 19 oz set.
Below we compare the five best, then review all seven in detail.

Our picks for the best pint glasses for home
These seven sets cover the main pint shapes: the tapered shaker pint, the flared pub glass, the bulged imperial-style pint, a tall crystal pint and a stackable cooler glass. Each review gives the capacity, the count, what the glass is made of and whether the maker says it can go in the dishwasher, plus one honest reason to skip it.
1. Libbey Restaurant Basics DuraTuff 16 oz Pint Glasses, Set of 12 – The Bar Standard at Home

This is the glass most Americans picture when they hear “pint”: a straight, tapered 16-ounce tumbler with a wide mouth and a narrow base. Libbey sells it to bars and restaurants as model 1639HT, and this listing packs a dozen for home use. The listing describes it as a mixing glass too, so it pairs with a metal tin to make a Boston shaker.
The useful part is the treatment. Foodservice retailer KaTom describes the 1639HT as getting a standard heat treatment plus Libbey’s DuraTuff process, which strengthens the upper part of the glass against thermal and mechanical shock where chipping is most likely. WebstaurantStore adds that DuraTuff glass tends to break into larger pieces, which makes cleanup easier if one does go. KaTom lists it at about 3.5 inches across the top and 5.875 inches tall.
Twelve glasses is enough for a family and a few guests. The tapered shape nests loosely, though the rims can stick if you stack them tight; store them upright if you can.
Why we like it
- The 1639HT restaurant pint, sold as a set of 12
- DuraTuff treatment strengthens the upper glass and rim, per KaTom
- Doubles as a mixing glass for a Boston shaker
- Wide mouth and narrow base for a comfortable grip
Key specifications
| Model | 1639HT |
|---|---|
| Material | Heat-treated glass, DuraTuff |
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Count | 12 |
| Dimensions | About 3.5 x 5.875 inches (KaTom) |
| Dishwasher safe | Not stated in the listing |
| Made in | Not stated |
| Lead statement | Not stated (soda-lime-style glass, not crystal) |
Why we recommend it
It suits anyone who wants one glass for everything: a can of lager, iced tea at lunch, water on the table and a shaken margarita when you need a second half for the tin. It is the shape bars rely on because it is cheap to replace and hard to chip.
Skip it if you want a glass that shows off a craft beer’s aroma; the straight, open shape does nothing to gather it, and a tulip from our beer glasses guide does that better.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Restaurant-grade chip-resistant rim
- Twelve glasses in the box
- Works as a shaker glass
Cons
- Dishwasher use not stated in the listing
- Rims can stick when stacked
- Plain shape for aromatic beers
2. Krosno Chill Beer Glasses, 16.9 oz, Set of 6 – Lead-Free Crystal, Tall and Slim

Krosno is a Polish glassmaker, and its Chill beer glass is the finer-walled option on this page. The listing describes a slim, slightly tapered shape that widens toward the rim, which Krosno says helps release aroma and hold the head. Each glass holds 16.9 ounces, half a liter, so a 12-ounce bottle leaves generous room for foam and a 16-ounce can fills it close to the rim.
Krosno’s own product page for the 500 ml Chill set describes the glasses as lead-free crystal and dishwasher safe. The Amazon listing uses “lead-free crystal” in its title and “premium clear glass” in its features, and says the glass resists clouding. We quote the maker’s lead-free statement because crystal is where that question matters.
Six glasses in a set suits a household that wants a nicer glass for beer without buying separate pilsner, IPA and lager shapes. The thinner walls feel lighter in the hand than a bar pint, and they are also less forgiving of a knock against the faucet.
Why we like it
- Lead-free crystal, according to Krosno
- 16.9 oz (500 ml), room for a full head on a bottle
- Tapered shape that widens toward the rim
- Dishwasher safe, per Krosno and the listing
Key specifications
| Model | BEER-GLASS-CHILL-500ML |
|---|---|
| Material | Lead-free crystal glass (Krosno) |
| Capacity | 16.9 oz (500 ml) |
| Count | 6 |
| Dimensions | Not stated in the listing |
| Dishwasher safe | Yes |
| Made in | Europe (listing); Krosno is a Polish maker |
| Lead statement | Lead-free (Krosno) |
Why we recommend it
It suits beer drinkers who want something finer than a bar pint for lager, IPA or a Mexican-style pale beer, without stepping up to single-style tasting glasses.
Skip it if the glasses will live a hard life; thin crystal walls chip and break more easily than a heat-treated restaurant pint.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Maker states lead-free crystal
- Half-liter capacity
- Dishwasher safe
Cons
- Thinner walls, less forgiving
- Dimensions not stated on Amazon
- Too tall for some cabinets and racks

3. JoyJolt Grant 19 oz Beer Pint Glasses, Set of 4 – Room for the Foam

JoyJolt’s Grant is a pub-style pint built bigger than the American standard. It holds up to 19 ounces, so you can pour a 16-ounce can with a proper head, or fill it close to an imperial pint, as JoyJolt puts it. The listing gives the size as 5.75 inches tall and 3.25 inches wide, a squat, heavy-feeling glass.
JoyJolt says the glass is thick, with a rolled rim and no bubbles or imperfections, and that it can go in the freezer to chill before you pour and then into the dishwasher; at 5.75 inches it fits the top rack. The set comes bubble-wrapped in a box, and JoyJolt lists a 12-month guarantee.
Four glasses is a small set. That suits a couple or a small household that wants a sturdy glass for stouts, ales and cans.
Why we like it
- 19 oz capacity, room for a 16 oz pour plus head
- Thick glass with a rolled rim
- Freezer and dishwasher safe, per JoyJolt
- 12-month guarantee listed
Key specifications
| Model | JC10154 |
|---|---|
| Material | Thick glass |
| Capacity | 19 oz |
| Count | 4 |
| Dimensions | 5.75 inches tall, 3.25 inches wide |
| Dishwasher safe | Yes; also freezer safe |
| Made in | Not stated |
| Lead statement | Not stated (glass, not crystal) |
Why we recommend it
It suits anyone who mostly drinks 16-ounce cans and wants the whole can in the glass with a head on top, and anyone who likes a frosted glass straight from the freezer.
Skip it if you need a dozen glasses for a party; four is the only count here, and the bigger capacity means bigger pours.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Fits a full can plus foam
- Freezer and dishwasher safe
- Guarantee listed
Cons
- Only four glasses
- Heavy, chunky feel
4. Luminarc Pub Beer Glass, 16 oz, Set of 4 – A Classic Pub Shape

Luminarc is a brand of Arc International, and its 16-ounce pub glass is a simple four-pack for a small household. The listing calls them craft brew pub glasses, lists the material as glass and the country of origin as the USA, and says they are dishwasher safe.
That is all the listing states, and we will not add to it. The appeal is a standard 16-ounce capacity, a recognizable maker and a small count, so you can try the shape before you commit to a dozen. Arc also sells a 12-glass Luminarc pub set if you like them.
At 16 ounces, a 12-ounce bottle leaves a good inch or so for the head, and a 16-ounce can fills it to the brim, so pour slowly.
Why we like it
- 16 oz pub glasses from Arc International’s Luminarc brand
- Made in the USA, per the listing
- Dishwasher safe
- Small set of four to start with
Key specifications
| Model | H6480 |
|---|---|
| Material | Glass |
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Count | 4 |
| Dimensions | Not stated |
| Dishwasher safe | Yes |
| Made in | USA (listing) |
| Lead statement | Not stated (glass, not crystal) |
Why we recommend it
It suits a first apartment or a small kitchen that wants four matching beer glasses from a known glassmaker and nothing more.
Skip it if you want detail before you buy; the listing gives no dimensions or weight, so you cannot check it against your cabinet or dishwasher.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Known maker, made in the USA
- Dishwasher safe
- Small, easy-to-store set
Cons
- Very little detail in the listing
- A 16 oz can fills it to the rim
5. Anchor Hocking 16 oz Mixing Glasses, Case of 24 – Enough for a Cookout

Anchor Hocking’s 176FU is the foodservice version of the shaker pint, sold by the case of 24. The listing gives a 3.25-inch top and a 2.375-inch bottom diameter, and foodservice retailers list it at about 5.875 inches tall, a slightly tapered 16-ounce glass.
Retailers describe it as a mixing glass, a beverage glass and a beer pint, which is exactly how a home with a lot of people uses it. Anchor Hocking’s Sure Guard program, as foodservice retailers describe it, covers the rim against chipping in normal use. The listing does not say whether the glass is tempered or whether it is dishwasher safe, so we list both as not stated.
Twenty-four glasses is a lot of shelf space. It makes sense if you host cookouts, have a big family or want spares so a broken glass does not break the set.
Why we like it
- 24 identical 16 oz glasses
- Restaurant shaker-pint shape
- Rim chip coverage under Anchor Hocking’s Sure Guard, per retailers
- Spares on hand for breakage
Key specifications
| Model | 176FU |
|---|---|
| Material | Clear glass |
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Count | 24 |
| Dimensions | 3.25-inch top, 2.375-inch base, about 5.875 inches tall |
| Dishwasher safe | Not stated in the listing |
| Made in | Not stated |
| Lead statement | Not stated (glass, not crystal) |
Why we recommend it
It suits hosts. When everyone at a carne asada wants a cold drink, two dozen sturdy glasses mean nobody is stuck with a paper cup, and the same glass works for beer, agua fresca and water.
Skip it if you have a small kitchen; a case of 24 needs real cabinet space, and the listing is thin on care details.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Two dozen glasses
- Foodservice shaker shape
- Rim chip coverage, per retailers
Cons
- Takes a lot of storage
- Dishwasher use not stated

6. Bormioli Rocco Oxford Bar Cooler Glass, 16.75 oz, Set of 6 – Tempered Italian Glass That Stacks

Bormioli Rocco’s Oxford Bar is the practical choice here: a 16.75-ounce cooler glass, sold as a set of six and made in Italy, according to the listing. It is tempered, which the listing says gives it resistance to thermal shock, breakage, chipping and dishwasher wear, and it is designed to stack.
A cooler glass is a tall tumbler rather than a tapered pint, but at nearly 17 ounces it does the same job for beer, and it suits iced tea, lemonade and long cocktails just as well. The listing does not give the height or diameter, and it makes no lead statement; it describes the set as glass, not crystal.
Six glasses is a sensible household count, and stacking saves real shelf space in a small kitchen.
Why we like it
- 16.75 oz tempered glass, made in Italy
- Designed to stack
- Resists chipping and dishwasher wear, per the listing
- Works for beer and long cold drinks
Key specifications
| Model | 340769BYT121990 |
|---|---|
| Material | Tempered glass |
| Capacity | 16.75 oz |
| Count | 6 |
| Dimensions | Not stated |
| Dishwasher safe | Resists dishwasher wear, per the listing |
| Made in | Italy |
| Lead statement | Not stated on Amazon (listed as glass, not crystal) |
Why we recommend it
It suits a kitchen where the pint glass is also the everyday drinking glass and shelf space is short.
Skip it if you want a true pint shape for beer; it is a cooler glass, not a tapered pint.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Made in Italy
- Stacks to save shelf space
- Tempered for everyday use
Cons
- Cooler shape, not a tapered pint
- Dimensions not stated
7. Amazon Basics Pint Glasses, 16 oz, Set of 4 – Plain, Thick and Simple

Amazon’s own brand makes this four-pack of 16-ounce pint glasses. The listing describes thick, clear glass for durability and stability, a classic shape for everyday use and gatherings, and dishwasher-safe cleaning.
There is not much more to say, and that is the point. It is a plain pint glass for beer, soft drinks and water, in a small set that is easy to replace if one breaks. The listing does not give dimensions, a country of origin or a lead statement, so we list them as not stated.
If you want a dozen of the same thing, the Libbey set above is the better buy; if you want four plain glasses with no decisions, this is the simplest choice on the page.
Why we like it
- 16 oz pint shape
- Thick, clear glass, per the listing
- Dishwasher safe
- Small set of four
Key specifications
| Model | ABL037 |
|---|---|
| Material | Thick clear glass |
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Count | 4 |
| Dimensions | Not stated |
| Dishwasher safe | Yes |
| Made in | Not stated |
| Lead statement | Not stated (glass, not crystal) |
Why we recommend it
It suits someone filling a new kitchen who wants a few sturdy glasses that go in the dishwasher and nothing else to think about.
Skip it if you want to know where and how your glass is made; this listing gives the least detail of any set here apart from the Luminarc.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Thick, sturdy glass
- Dishwasher safe
- Easy to replace
Cons
- No dimensions or origin listed
- Only four glasses
Shaker, nonic or pub: the pint shapes explained
A shaker pint is the American standard: 16 ounces, straight-sided and tapered from rim to base. It is strong, cheap and fits a metal tin to make a Boston shaker, which is why bars buy it by the case. The Libbey and Anchor Hocking glasses on this page are shaker pints.
A nonic is the British pub glass, with a bulge a little below the rim. The bulge gives your hand something to hold and keeps the rims apart when the glasses are stacked, so they do not chip against each other. A British imperial pint is 20 ounces, bigger than an American pint, which is why many nonic-style glasses sold in the US hold 19 or 20 ounces, like the JoyJolt Grant.

A tall or flared pint, like the Krosno Chill, narrows at the base and widens toward the rim, which gives the head of a beer more room. A cooler is a straight tumbler of the same size, more of an everyday drinking glass that happens to suit beer.
For a pale Mexican lager, any of these works; a taller glass shows off the color and bubbles. For the full range of shapes, including tulips, pilsner glasses and mugs for micheladas, see our guide to the best beer glasses.
How to choose pint glasses for home
Pick the capacity for your pour. A 16-ounce glass holds a 12-ounce bottle with room for a head. If you mostly drink 16-ounce cans, a 19- or 20-ounce glass is the better size, or you will be pouring slowly and topping up.
Decide how tough it needs to be. Heat-treated restaurant pints like the Libbey 1639HT are built for daily knocks and dishwashers. Thin crystal is lighter and finer but breaks more easily. In a house with kids or a busy sink, choose the restaurant glass.
Read the material line. Of the sets here, only Krosno describes its glass as crystal, and Krosno states it is lead-free. The others are listed as glass or soda-lime glass, which is not crystal. We report only what each maker or listing states.
Buy the count you will use. Four glasses suits a couple; a dozen covers a family with guests; 24 is for hosts. Pint glasses are easy to break and easy to replace, so a few spares are worth having.
Check the care instructions. Krosno, JoyJolt, Luminarc and Amazon Basics list their glasses as dishwasher safe; the Libbey and Anchor Hocking listings do not say. If you prefer to chill glasses in the freezer, JoyJolt is the only maker here that says it is fine.
Know what a pint holds. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism counts 12 ounces of regular beer at about 5% alcohol as one standard drink, so a full 16-ounce pint is more than one, and a 19-ounce glass more again.

How we chose these seven sets
We started from what a restaurant asks of an everyday glass: a size that suits the pour, glass that survives the dishwasher and the sink, a material the maker states plainly and a shape that is easy to store. We then narrowed the field to sets sold on Amazon in the United States by identifiable glassmakers, and checked with Amazon’s product data that each was in stock when we wrote this. Specifications come from the Amazon listings, Krosno’s own product page and foodservice retailers KaTom and WebstaurantStore for the restaurant glasses.
We left out the sets already on our beer glasses guide, including Libbey’s Classic Pub glasses. Several pint glasses were low on stock or unavailable when we checked: Libbey’s DuraTuff English pub glass and smaller pint packs, Bormioli Rocco’s Nonix and Sestriere pints, Spiegelau’s IPA glass, Rastal’s pint glasses and Arcoroc’s imperial pints. We also skipped unbranded sellers. We have not poured a beer into every glass listed here; where we describe how a shape behaves, we say whose description it is.
Pint glass questions, answered
What are the best pint glasses ever made?
There is no single answer, but the restaurant shaker pint, like the Libbey 1639HT, has lasted because it is strong, cheap and works for almost any drink. For beer alone, a nonic or a tall, flared pint gives the head more room.
What is the best pint glass in the world for beer?
For a range of beers, a glass with room above the pour matters most: at least 16 ounces for a bottle and 19 to 20 ounces for a can. A finer, lead-free crystal glass like the Krosno Chill shows off the color; a tulip from our beer glasses guide gathers aroma better than any pint.
What is the difference between a US pint and an imperial pint?
A US pint is 16 fluid ounces. A British imperial pint is 20 imperial fluid ounces, slightly over 19 US ounces, which is why British-style glasses sold in the US are often listed at 19 or 20 ounces.
Are pint glasses dishwasher safe?
Most are, but check the listing. Krosno, JoyJolt, Luminarc and Amazon Basics say theirs are; the Libbey and Anchor Hocking listings on this page do not say either way.
Are crystal pint glasses lead-free?
Many modern crystal glasses are, but not every maker says so. Krosno states its Chill glasses are lead-free crystal. If a crystal glass does not carry a lead-free statement from its maker, ask before you buy.
The pint glass we would buy first
Buy the Libbey DuraTuff dozen if you want one glass for everything, and add the Krosno Chill set when you want something finer for beer. The JoyJolt Grant suits anyone who mostly pours 16-ounce cans, and the Anchor Hocking case covers a backyard party. Whatever you pour, keep it to a sensible amount, and keep water and food on the table.
A pint glass is one part of a home bar. For the other glasses on the shelf, see our guides to margarita glasses and everyday glassware sets, and for the drinks themselves, what to drink with Mexican food.
And if you would rather someone else poured tonight, see the menu and the drinks list, or call to order.
