Leakproof, Glass or Steel: The Best Salad Bowl Lunch Containers

The best salad bowl lunch containers with toppings trays and dressing cups, which lids are called leakproof, and how to keep a packed salad cold.

A salad of greens, carrots, egg and cheese in a clear lidded container beside a red apple
A packed salad and a piece of fruit, ready to go.

A salad packed at seven in the morning has to survive until noon, and most don’t. The dressing soaks the lettuce, the croutons go soft, and the tomatoes leak into everything. Restaurant kitchens solve that by keeping wet and dry apart until the last moment, and a good salad lunch container does the same: a deep bowl for the greens, a tray that sits above them for toppings, and a small sealed cup for the dressing.

This guide is about those containers, the ones built to carry one salad to work or school, not the serving bowls you set on a table. It compares plastic, glass and stainless steel, explains which lids are actually described as leakproof, and covers how to keep a packed salad cold enough to be safe to eat at lunch.

Quick verdict: which salad lunch container to buy

For most people, the best salad bowl lunch container is the Bentgo Salad, 54 oz: a big bowl, a four-compartment toppings tray, a leak-proof dressing cup, a reusable fork and locking clips, all top-shelf dishwasher safe according to Bentgo. If you want glass you can microwave, choose the Bentgo Glass Salad. If a leak in your bag is the thing you fear most, the OXO Prep & Go Salad Container has a silicone-gasket lid that OXO describes as watertight. And if your salad sits for hours before lunch, the Rachael Ray salad container comes with an ice pack that clips into the lid.

Below, nine containers that keep a salad in pieces until you want it in one.

Our picks for the best salad bowl lunch

Every container here does the one job that matters: it holds the greens apart from the wet and crunchy things until you are ready to eat. They differ in material, size, how tightly the lid is described as sealing, and what comes in the box. Each pick lists the same eight specifications, and where a maker does not say something, such as whether the whole container is leakproof rather than just the dressing cup, we say “Not stated”.

1. Bentgo Salad, 54 oz – A Big Bowl With Everything Included

Best overallBentgo Salad Container

The container most people mean when they say “salad lunch box.” Bentgo’s listing describes a 54-ounce bowl with a four-compartment tray that nests above the greens, a leak-proof sauce container for dressing, a reusable fork with a cover, and an airtight lid with locking clips. Fifty-four ounces is a true main-course salad, with room to toss it in the bowl once the dressing goes on.

The tray is the useful part. Croutons, nuts and cheese go in the small sections; chicken or beans go in the larger one; everything stays out of the lettuce until lunch. Bentgo says all parts are top-shelf dishwasher safe, the bowl can go in the microwave for warming grain or chicken, and everything is made of BPA-free materials. It comes with a two-year warranty, according to the listing.

One detail to read carefully: Bentgo calls the dressing container leak-proof and the lid airtight, but does not call the whole container leakproof. Keep it upright in your bag.

Why we like it

  • 54-ounce bowl, room to toss a full salad
  • Four-compartment toppings tray and leak-proof dressing cup, per Bentgo
  • Reusable fork included
  • Top-shelf dishwasher safe, BPA-free, two-year warranty, per Bentgo

Key specifications

Model BGOSAL
Bowl capacity 54 oz
Bowl material BPA-free materials (type not stated)
Topping tray 4 compartments
Dressing cup Leak-proof sauce container (size not stated)
Extras Reusable fork and cover; airtight lid with clips
Dishwasher Top shelf, all parts
Microwave / freezer Bowl microwave safe / Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who wants a full-size salad and every part of the kit in one box, with nothing extra to buy.

Skip it if you want a glass bowl or a lid that is described as leakproof as a whole.

  • Two-year warranty

  • Only the dressing cup is called leak-proof
  • Bulky in a small bag
  • Dressing cup size not stated

2. Bentgo Glass Salad, 7.6 Cup – Glass Bowl That Goes in the Oven

Best glassBentgo Glass Salad Container with Airtight Lid & Leak-Proof Sauce Cup

The same idea as the Bentgo Salad, with a glass bowl. Bentgo lists it at 7.6 cups, a little over 60 ounces, with a removable tray that has one large 8.9-ounce section and two 4.2-ounce sections, plus a separate leak-proof 3-ounce dressing container and a reusable fork. The lid is airtight with locking clips.

Glass changes what you can do with it. Bentgo says the bowl is microwave, oven and freezer safe, so a grain bowl or a salad with warm roasted vegetables can be heated in the bowl, and Bentgo describes the glass as stain-resistant. All parts are top-shelf dishwasher safe, and it carries a two-year warranty, per the listing.

The cost is weight. A glass bowl this size is noticeably heavier in a bag than the plastic version. Bentgo’s glass three-compartment lunch box is on our meal prep containers page; this is the salad-shaped version, with a deep bowl rather than flat sections.

Why we like it

  • Glass bowl rated for microwave, oven and freezer, per Bentgo
  • Tray sized at 8.9 oz plus two 4.2-oz sections
  • Separate 3-ounce leak-proof dressing container
  • Top-shelf dishwasher safe, two-year warranty

Key specifications

Model BGLASSAL
Bowl capacity 7.6 cups
Bowl material Glass
Topping tray 8.9 oz + two 4.2 oz sections
Dressing cup 3 oz, leak-proof
Extras Reusable fork; airtight lid with clips
Dishwasher Top shelf, all parts
Microwave / freezer Bowl: microwave, oven and freezer safe

Why we recommend it

It suits people who heat part of their lunch, or who simply prefer glass against their food.

Skip it if you carry lunch on foot or by bike; the glass bowl adds real weight.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Oven-safe glass bowl
  • Clearly sized tray and dressing cup
  • Large capacity

Cons

  • Heavy
  • Glass can break if dropped
  • Whole container not described as leakproof

3. OXO Good Grips Prep & Go Salad Container, 6.3 Cup – A Lid Built Not to Leak

Best sealOXO Good Grips Prep & Go Food Storage Salad Container - 6.3 Cup

OXO is the one maker here that describes the container itself, not just the dressing cup, as leakproof. The listing describes a watertight lid with a silicone gasket and two locking clips, and calls the container “portable leakproof.” For a salad that rides sideways in a tote or backpack, that is the feature to pay for.

Inside is a 6.3-cup bowl, about 1.5 liters, with a removable shallow tray that keeps wet and dry ingredients apart, and a condiment container for dressing. OXO’s own Prep & Go set page lists the condiment keepers at 2 ounces. A clear window in the lid lets you find your lunch in a crowded office fridge without opening it.

OXO says it is microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe and BPA free. Our parent meal prep containers guide includes OXO’s 4.1-cup divided container from the same line; this salad version is deeper and adds the tray and dressing cup, which is what a salad needs.

Why we like it

  • Silicone-gasket lid with two clips, described as watertight
  • Removable tray separates wet and dry ingredients
  • 2-ounce condiment container, per OXO
  • Microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe, BPA free

Key specifications

Model Prep & Go Salad Container
Bowl capacity 6.3 cups
Bowl material BPA-free plastic
Topping tray Removable shallow tray
Dressing cup 2 oz condiment container
Extras Clear lid window

4. Rachael Ray Salad Container with Ice Pack, 4 Cup – Cold Built Into the Lid

Best for keeping coldRachael Ray Salad Container For Lunch

The only container here that brings its own cold source. The listing, from Fit + Fresh in partnership with Rachael Ray, describes a 4-cup salad bowl with a divided toppings tray, a dressing container, and a slim removable ice pack that clips into the lid. Freeze the pack overnight, clip it in in the morning, and the cold sits right on top of the food.

That matters because a salad with chicken, eggs or cheese is perishable food. USDA’s guidance on bag lunches is to pack at least two cold sources with perishable food, so treat this ice pack as one and add a second in an insulated bag. The bowl measures 6 x 6 x 5.5 inches per the listing, and the lid snaps shut so you can shake the salad once the dressing is in.

The listing says it is microwave and dishwasher safe; it does not say whether the ice pack goes in the dishwasher, so wash that by hand. The listing describes a “Deluxe Salad Set,” so check the number of containers in the box on the product page.

Why we like it

  • Slim ice pack clips into the lid, per the listing
  • Divided tray and dressing container
  • Snap lid made for shaking the salad
  • Microwave and dishwasher safe, per the listing

Skip it if you eat big salads; 4 cups is the smallest bowl among the single containers here.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Built-in cold source
  • Compact, square shape
  • Microwave and dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Smaller bowl
  • Material and leakproofing not stated
  • Pack count unclear on the listing

5. Sistema Salad To Go, 1.1 Liter – Compact, With Cutlery in the Lid

Most compactSistema Salad Container for Lunch with Dressing Container

A smaller, simpler salad box from the New Zealand maker of the clip-lid containers many offices are full of. Sistema’s listing describes a removable tray with four compartments, a lidded 1.9-ounce dressing container, and a fork and knife that fit into the container. Retailers list the capacity as 1.1 liters, a little under 5 cups, in a square about 6.5 inches across.

The lid has easy-locking clips and an extended flexible seal, according to the listing, which says the seal helps keep the contents fresh; it does not call it leakproof. A Sistema dealer listing says it is top-rack dishwasher safe and microwave safe without the lid, fridge and freezer safe, and made in New Zealand from BPA-free plastic.

Sistema also asks you not to use abrasive cleaners or scrubbers, which can dull the finish. The color you receive may vary.

Why we like it

  • Four-compartment tray and 1.9-ounce dressing cup, per the listing
  • Fork and knife fit in the container
  • Compact 1.1-liter size

6. Sistema Salad + Sandwich To Go, 1.63 Liter – A Salad and a Sandwich in One Box

Best salad and sandwichSistema Salad + Sandwich Lunch Box to Go

For days when a salad alone will not carry you to dinner. The listing describes a 1.63-liter container where the salad goes in the base and a sandwich sits in the divider tray above it, so the bread never touches wet greens.

It closes with Sistema’s easy-lock clips and a flexible seal that the listing says keeps food fresher. Sistema says it is top-rack dishwasher safe, fridge and freezer safe, and microwave safe without the lid, designed and made in New Zealand from phthalate- and BPA-free materials.

What it does not list is a dressing cup. Pair it with a small lidded condiment pot, or dress the salad at the table. Colors are assorted and cannot be chosen.

7. S’well Stainless Steel Salad Bowl Kit, 64 oz – No Plastic Against the Food

Best stainless steelS'well Stainless Steel Salad Bowl Kit 64 oz Mountain Sage

S’well’s larger 184-ounce salad kit is on our best salad bowls page as a bowl for carrying a salad to a group. This 64-ounce kit is the lunch-size version, and we include it here because it is the only container on this page where the bowl and tray are both steel.

S’well’s listing says the bowl and removable tray are 18/8 food-grade stainless steel, and the 2-ounce Mini Canister for dressing is stainless with a silicone lid. The bowl has a leakproof lid, per the listing. It is BPA- and BPS-free, fridge and freezer friendly, and top-rack dishwasher safe.

Steel will not go in the microwave, and you cannot see through it, so label it if it lives in a shared fridge. In exchange, there is no glass to break and no plastic in contact with the salad.

Why we like it

  • 18/8 stainless bowl and tray, per S’well

A smaller glass option from Progressive’s SnapLock line. The listing describes a 5.7-cup borosilicate glass container with a three-compartment upper tray and a 3-1/2-tablespoon dressing container, and an airtight, leak-proof seal.

The detail that sets it apart is the removable silicone base, which the listing says adds durability and stays cool to the touch when microwaving. Borosilicate glass, per the listing, can go from the freezer to a preheated oven, and the whole container is dishwasher, oven, microwave and freezer safe.

At 5.7 cups it sits between the Sistema Salad To Go and the Bentgo glass bowl, a comfortable size for a lunch salad with protein.

Best for the whole weekGoodCook 4-Cup Meal Prep Bowls Set with Lids and Dressing Cup

One salad container is enough if you wash it every night. A set of ten lets you prep the week on Sunday. The listing says this GoodCook set lets two people plan lunch for the work week, or one person prep both lunch and dinner. Each bowl holds 4 cups.

The details are aimed at batch prep: embossed cup measurements on the bowls, a small dressing cup on the outside of the bowl, and domed, see-through snap-shut lids with room to shake and toss the salad. GoodCook says they are microwave and dishwasher safe.

There is no toppings tray, and the listing does not describe them as leakproof. Keep them upright, and keep in mind that a salad made on Sunday is at its best early in the week; the crispest greens go in Monday’s bowl.

How to choose a salad container for lunch

The right container depends on how far your salad travels and what you put in it. These are the five things worth checking.

1. A tray and a separate dressing cup

This is the whole point. Greens go in the bowl, wet or crunchy toppings in the tray, dressing in a sealed cup. A container without a dressing cup, like the Sistema Salad + Sandwich, needs a small condiment pot alongside it.

2. Which part is actually leakproof

Read the wording. OXO, S’well and SnapLock describe the container or lid as leakproof or watertight; Bentgo describes the dressing cup as leak-proof and the lid as airtight; Sistema and GoodCook do not use the word. If your bag gets tossed around, buy the one that says it.

3. Size

Four to five cups makes a side salad or a light lunch; six to eight cups is a main-course salad with room to toss. Bigger bowls take more room in the fridge and the bag.

4. Material

Plastic is light. Glass, like the Bentgo Glass and SnapLock, goes in the microwave and oven but weighs more. Stainless steel, like the S’well kit, will not crack or stain but cannot be microwaved. Rely on BPA-free claims only as the maker states them.

5. A way to keep it cold

No container keeps food cold by itself. The Rachael Ray container’s clip-in ice pack helps; for the rest, an insulated bag and freezer packs do the work, as the next section explains.

Sliced tomatoes in a white bowl beside cucumber slices on a cutting board
Wet ingredients like tomato and cucumber are best packed apart from the greens.

Keeping a packed salad cold and safe

A salad with chicken, eggs, cheese, beans or cooked grains is perishable. The USDA’s guidance on keeping bag lunches safe is to use an insulated, soft-sided lunch bag and to pack at least two cold sources, such as frozen gel packs, with perishable food. Put the container in the office fridge when you arrive if there is one.

The government’s four steps to food safety set the time limit: perishable food should be refrigerated within 2 hours, or within 1 hour if it is exposed to temperatures above 90°F, like a hot car. In a Houston summer, that one-hour rule is the one to plan around.

Greens count too. The FDA’s advice on selecting and serving produce safely is to store perishable produce such as lettuce and herbs in a clean refrigerator at 40°F or below, and to refrigerate all produce bought pre-cut or packaged. Pack your salad straight from the fridge, not after it has sat on the counter.

How we chose these nine containers

We started from makers known for lunch and storage containers, including OXO, Bentgo, Rubbermaid, Sistema, Fullstar, YETI, Stanley and Ello, and checked what each sells on Amazon US with the Amazon product API. Only containers listed as in stock with a separate dressing cup or toppings tray made the cut. Rubbermaid, Ello, YETI and Stanley sell lunch and food containers, but none we found in stock combined a salad-size bowl with a toppings tray and a dressing cup, and the Fullstar listings we found were vegetable choppers, so none of those appear. We left out containers sold under names we could not tie to a maker. Specifications come from the Amazon listings and, where they add detail, the makers’ and dealers’ pages, as noted on each pick; where a maker does not state something we say so. We did not use these containers ourselves, and we do not quote prices. We also checked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall site and found no recalls for these containers.

This page is about one salad, packed to travel. For serving bowls, see the best salad bowls; for divided containers that hold a whole meal, see the best meal prep containers and the glass picks in the best glass meal prep containers.

Salad lunch container questions, answered

What is the best salad bowl for lunch at work?

The Bentgo Salad if you want a big bowl and a fork in the kit; the OXO Prep & Go if your bag does not stay upright. Both keep toppings and dressing apart until you eat.

How do you keep a salad from getting soggy before lunch?

Keep the dressing in its own sealed cup and the wet toppings, like tomatoes and cucumbers, in the tray rather than on the greens. Dry the lettuce well after washing, and dress the salad only when you sit down to eat.

Are glass salad lunch bowls worth it?

If you heat part of your lunch, yes: the Bentgo Glass and SnapLock bowls are rated for the microwave and oven. If you carry lunch a long way, plastic or steel weighs less.

How long can a packed salad stay out of the fridge?

Federal food safety guidance is to refrigerate perishable food within 2 hours, or 1 hour above 90°F. An insulated bag with two cold sources helps keep it cold until then, as USDA advises.

Can you put salad lunch containers in the dishwasher?

All nine here are listed as dishwasher safe, most on the top rack only. Check whether that includes the dressing cup and any ice pack; the Rachael Ray listing does not say for its ice pack.

The salad box we’d pack tomorrow

Buy the Bentgo Salad for a big, complete salad kit; the Bentgo Glass if you want glass; the OXO Prep & Go if leaks are your worry; and the Rachael Ray container if your salad waits a long time for lunch. Whatever you choose, pack it cold, carry it with ice packs, and keep the dressing apart until you eat.
