Rice, Beans and Salsa Apart: The Best Bento Box for Lunch

Eight bento boxes for adults and kids, compared on capacity, leak wording, reheating and care, with honest reasons to skip each one.

A partitioned stainless steel lunchbox with rice, chicken, curry and fruit on a wooden table
Dividers keep each part of a packed meal separate until lunch.

A plate of rice, beans and carne guisada tastes right because each part keeps its own texture. The same plate in a single tub, four hours later, is one soft mixture. That is the case for a bento box: dividers keep the rice from drinking up the sauce and the crisp things crisp, and the meal you packed is still the meal you eat.

The word bento covers a lot of products now, from Japanese-style stacked tiers to flat trays with a clip and steel snack boxes for school. This guide sorts them by what you actually pack, with most picks sized for adults and one for children. If your lunch is mainly greens, see our guide to salad lunch containers instead.

Quick verdict: which bento box to buy

For most adults, the best bento box is the Bentgo Modern, 5.5 cups: it holds a full meal, the divider adjusts, and the tray lifts out for the microwave. For two sealed tiers, choose the monbento MB Original. With no microwave at work, the Zojirushi Ms. Bento jar is rated to hold 149°F after 6 hours. For children, the OmieBox packs hot and cold food together.

Below are eight boxes from seven makers, each with one honest reason to skip it.

Our picks for the best bento box

The first three cover most adult lunches: a flat box, a stacked box and a large one. After those come a hot-lunch jar, a sandwich box, a starter kit, a stainless steel box and a pick for children. We note each maker’s exact leak wording, because “leak-resistant” and “leakproof” do not mean the same thing.

1. Bentgo Modern Bento Lunch Box, 5.5 Cup – A Full Lunch in One Layer

Best overallBentgo Modern Adult Bento Lunch Box with 3-4 Compartments

For most working adults this is the right shape: one flat box, a real meal’s worth of room, and a lid that closes with a single metal clip. It holds 5.5 cups, which is enough for rice, beans and a main with space left for fruit, and at 9.1 by 7.1 by 2.4 inches it lies flat in a work bag.

A removable divider switches the tray between three and four compartments, so a big serving of leftovers gets one wide section on Monday and a neat spread of sides gets four on Tuesday. When lunch comes around, you lift out the tray and microwave it. The tray is also dishwasher safe.

Bentgo says the materials are BPA and PFAS free and food grade, and it includes a two-year warranty. The Yummy Bowl, a food site that picked this box as its best overall for adults, calls it a practical all-around choice for filling lunches without too much bulk.

Note the wording on the seal. Bentgo calls this box leak-resistant, with an airtight silicone seal, not leakproof. It will handle salsa on rice or dressed salad, but soup and thin sauces belong in a jar.

Why we like it

  • 5.5-cup capacity for a full adult lunch
  • Divider switches between three and four compartments
  • Tray lifts out for the microwave and dishwasher
  • BPA and PFAS free, per Bentgo
  • Two-year warranty

Key specifications

Model 817387024471 (listing model)
Capacity 5.5 cups
Compartments 3 or 4, adjustable
Material Food-grade plastic; silicone seal
Leak claim Leak-resistant
Microwave Tray only
Dishwasher Tray only
Warranty 2 years

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who wants one box to carry a real meal to work. The flat shape, adjustable divider and easy reheating make it the simplest choice here for leftovers, and it packs a plate-style lunch of rice, beans and a main better than a stacked box.

Skip it if you pack soups, thin sauces or anything loose. It is rated leak-resistant only, so a stacked box with inner seals or a vacuum jar is safer for those.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Room for a full meal
  • Flexible layout
  • Easy reheating in the tray
  • Two-year warranty

Cons

  • Leak-resistant, not leakproof
  • Only the tray is rated for the microwave and dishwasher
  • No built-in cutlery

2. monbento MB Original Bento Box, 34 oz – Two Sealed Tiers, Made in France

Best stacked boxmonbento - Original - Bento Box Adult 34 oz Stackable Lunch Box

This is a true bento shape: two 17-ounce tiers stacked and held together by an elastic strap. Stacking keeps hot and cold foods apart in a way a single tray cannot, so rice and carne can sit in one tier and a salad or fruit in the other. Only one tier needs to go in the microwave.

Each tier has its own inner lid with a silicone seal and a vent, which monbento says stops dressings from spilling into your bag. A small 3-ounce food cup is included for salsa or crema. The box is made in France from PBT, a heat- and impact-resistant plastic, and is listed as BPA-free.

The Consumer’s Guide, a research-based buying site, ranked it runner-up among bento boxes for adults. It noted that the box can be microwaved with the lids off and that there are more lids to wash and lose. That site says it does not test everything hands on, so treat its verdict as research and not as a test.

Follow the heating limit. The listing allows a maximum of 3 minutes at 500 watts with the vent open, which is gentler than most office microwaves on full power. It is also rated for the top rack of the dishwasher and for the freezer.

Why we like it

  • Two separately sealed 17-ounce tiers
  • Inner lids with silicone seals and a vent
  • 3-ounce food cup included
  • Made in France from PBT, BPA-free per the listing
  • Top-rack dishwasher and freezer safe

Key specifications

Model 100001333 (part number)
Capacity 34 oz (2 x 17 oz)
Compartments 2 tiers, plus 3 oz cup
Material PBT plastic; silicone seals
Leak claim Leakproof (listing)
Microwave Yes, max 3 minutes at 500 W, vent open
Dishwasher Top rack
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

Choose it if you like to keep two parts of a meal truly separate, or if you want a box that looks good on a desk. It is a good fit for smaller appetites and for lunches with one hot part and one cold part.

Skip it if you eat big lunches. At 34 ounces in total, it is smaller than it looks, and the listing’s microwave limit means slower reheating.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Keeps hot and cold parts apart
  • Seal on each tier
  • Compact in a bag
  • Sauce cup included

Cons

  • More lids to wash and lose, per The Consumer’s Guide
  • Strict microwave limit
  • Modest capacity for a big appetite

3. Sistema To Go Large Bento Box, 7.4 Cup – The Biggest Box Here

Most roomSistema To Go Collection Large Bento Box Plastic Lunch and Food Storage Container

If you pack for a big appetite, start here. At 7.4 cups this is the largest box on the page, from a well-known food storage maker. The multi-compartment layout takes the place of several containers, and easy-locking clips hold down a lid with a flexible extended seal.

It is built for more than the lunch bag. Sistema rates it for the top rack of the dishwasher and for the fridge and freezer, and for the microwave without the lid. That makes it easy to cook once on Sunday, freeze a portion and reheat it at work.

Do not expect it to stay sealed on its side. The listing says the lid helps keep contents fresh, and it stops short of calling the box leakproof. The Consumer’s Guide also notes that corner-clip designs like this are fine upright but can seep when tipped. Carry it flat, and pack wet foods in a separate jar.

The plastic is BPA-free, and the clip colors vary by shipment, so you cannot choose one. The listing does not state a warranty.

Why we like it

  • 7.4-cup capacity, the largest here
  • Easy-locking clips and a flexible seal
  • Top-rack dishwasher, fridge and freezer safe
  • Microwave safe without the lid
  • BPA-free plastic

Key specifications

Model 21671
Capacity 7.4 cups
Compartments Multi-compartment
Material BPA-free plastic
Leak claim No leakproof claim on the listing
Microwave Yes, without the lid
Dishwasher Top rack
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

This is the box for a long shift, a teenager with a large appetite or anyone who wants lunch and an afternoon snack in one container. It is also the easiest here to use for batch cooking.

Skip it if the box will ride sideways in a backpack. It has no leakproof claim, and clip-lid boxes can seep when tipped.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Largest capacity on this page
  • Freezer to microwave
  • Light plastic build
  • Simple clip lid

Cons

  • Not sold as leakproof
  • Can seep when tipped, per The Consumer’s Guide
  • Clip color varies

4. Zojirushi Ms. Bento Stainless Lunch Jar, 28.5 oz – A Hot Lunch at Noon

Best hot lunchZojirushi SL-NCE09 Stainless Ms. Bento Steel Vacuum Lunch Jar

A bento box keeps food apart. It does not keep it hot. If there is no microwave at work, this is the one to buy. The Ms. Bento is a vacuum-insulated stainless steel jar that holds three stacked food bowls of 10.5, 11.2 and 6.8 ounces, with a carrying bag and a forked spoon.

It gives a real number. Zojirushi rates heat retention at 149°F after 6 hours and cold retention at 50°F after 6 hours, measured from water at 95°C and 4°C in a 20°C room. Your lunch will behave differently from hot water, and a jar that starts with hot food will do best, but this is a far clearer claim than most lunch gear makes.

Soup, guisado or caldo fits here in a way it does not in a tray box. The bowls are microwaveable and made of BPA-free plastic. Zojirushi warns that if a side bowl lid is closed over hot food, it may be hard to remove. Opening it while holding the gasket lets air in. The stated warranty is one year.

Two honest notes. The listing carries a California Proposition 65 warning about chemicals linked to reproductive harm or cancer, though it does not name a chemical or a part. And this is a round jar, so it stands upright in a bag rather than lying flat.

Why we like it

  • 149°F after 6 hours, per Zojirushi
  • Three microwaveable bowls of different sizes
  • Carrying bag and forked spoon included
  • Vacuum-insulated stainless steel jar
  • BPA-free plastic bowls

Key specifications

Model SL-NCE09
Capacity 28.5 oz
Compartments 3 bowls (10.5, 11.2, 6.8 oz)
Material Stainless steel jar; BPA-free plastic bowls
Leak claim No leakproof claim on the listing
Microwave Bowls only
Dishwasher Not stated
Warranty 1 year limited

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who wants a hot lunch and has nowhere to reheat it: a job site, a truck, a classroom without a kitchen. It also keeps cold food cool, so it works all year.

Skip it if you want a flat box or plan to pack it for a child. It is a tall jar, and the listing’s Proposition 65 warning is worth reading first.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Clear heat retention figure
  • No microwave needed
  • Bag and spoon included
  • Three separate bowls

Cons

  • Tall jar, not a flat box
  • Bowl lids can stick over hot food
  • Proposition 65 warning on the listing
  • Packs less than the flat boxes here

5. Yumbox Panino Leakproof Bento Box, 3 Cup – One Seal for Every Compartment

Best for sandwichesYumbox Panino Leakproof Bento Lunch Box Container for Kids & Adults (Red Shark)

The Panino solves the most common bento complaint: a good sandwich will not fit. Its tray has one large 2-cup section that takes a sandwich, wrap or torta, two half-cup sides and a 1-ounce dip well. Total room is about 3 cups plus the dip, in a box that measures roughly 8.5 by 6 by 1.8 inches.

The lid is what sets it apart. A single silicone-lined lid seals each compartment on its own when you close the one latch. The Consumer’s Guide made it its top pick for that reason, and Mabel’s Labels, which compared six boxes for children’s lunches, found the original Yumbox the simplest to open and reported a leakproof seal around each compartment.

Yumbox qualifies the claim, and so should you: it is leakproof for dips, not for water, and you must not overpack it or the seal cannot close. It also has no insulation, so the maker says to place an ice pack outside the box and carry both in an insulated bag.

It is dishwasher safe on the top rack, but Yumbox recommends hand washing the outer shell or removing it before the heat-dry cycle to protect the seal. The materials are stated to be BPA- and phthalate-free, and there is a one-year guarantee. The listing makes no microwave claim.

Why we like it

  • 2-cup section that fits a sandwich
  • One latch seals each compartment
  • Leakproof for dips, per Yumbox
  • BPA- and phthalate-free
  • One-year guarantee

Key specifications

Model 850035286111 (listing model)
Capacity 3 cups plus 1 oz dip
Compartments 4
Material Food-safe, BPA- and phthalate-free
Leak claim Leakproof for dips, not water
Microwave Not stated
Dishwasher Top rack; hand wash shell recommended
Warranty 1-year guarantee

Why we recommend it

This is the box for sandwich people and anyone who wants wet and dry foods side by side: chips next to salsa, say, with no separate tub. One latch also makes it the quickest box here to open.

Skip it if you are feeding a big appetite. The Consumer’s Guide calls its 3 cups light for hungry adults, and the Bentgo Modern or Sistema holds far more.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Fits a real sandwich
  • Each section seals separately
  • One-latch opening
  • Works for kids and adults

Cons

  • Small for a hungry adult
  • Not for water or thin liquids
  • Needs an ice pack and a bag
  • Shell needs gentle washing

6. Bentgo Classic Stackable Bento Box, 3 Compartment – Utensils and Strap Included

Easiest starter boxBentgo Classic Stackable 3-Compartment Adult Bento-Style Lunch Box

This is the simple box to buy if you have never packed a bento. You get two stacking containers, three compartments, a removable utensil set and a nylon strap that holds it all together, so the whole lunch is one object. It measures about 7 by 4 inches, and the top container nests inside the bottom when empty.

BestReviews lists it as its best-value bento box at a total capacity of 3.5 cups, and describes it as a good fit for beginners and office lunches. That is a smaller total than the Bentgo Modern, so think of it as a light lunch or a child’s portion rather than a full meal.

Care comes with a limit worth remembering. Bentgo says the main containers are microwave and dishwasher safe, but not the lid, divider or strap. Take those off before reheating. It is listed as BPA-free.

The listing has no leak claim. Keep it to drier foods such as rice, roasted vegetables, cut fruit and sandwiches.

Why we like it

  • Utensil set and sealing strap included
  • Two containers nest when empty
  • Removable divider
  • Main containers are microwave and dishwasher safe
  • BPA-free

Key specifications

Model BENTGO-B
Capacity 3.5 cups, per BestReviews
Compartments 3
Material BPA-free, food-safe plastic
Leak claim No leak claim on the listing
Microwave Main containers only
Dishwasher Main containers only
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits a first-time buyer, a smaller eater or a student who wants everything in one strapped bundle. Having the fork and spoon built in means you will never eat with a borrowed plastic fork.

Skip it if you need a filling adult lunch or pack anything wet. It is smaller than the others here for adults, and it has no leak claim.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Complete kit with utensils
  • Compact and tidy
  • Simple to use
  • Nests when empty

Cons

  • Small for a full adult lunch
  • No leak claim
  • Lid, divider and strap stay out of the microwave and dishwasher

7. LunchBots Large Cinco Stainless Steel Bento, 32 oz – All Steel Against Your Food

Best plastic-freeLunchBots Large Cinco Stainless Steel Kids Bento Box 5-Section Green 32 oz

If you would rather not have plastic against your food, this is the pick. LunchBots says that 18/8 stainless steel is all that touches your food, including under the colored dot lid. The name says kids, but at 32 ounces with five sections it is sized well for a light adult lunch of small items.

Five sections suit the way a good snack plate works: crackers, jicama sticks, cheese, nuts and tortilla chips, each in its own space. Steel also holds up well. LunchBots calls the boxes virtually indestructible and says they last a lifetime.

There is one firm limit, and the maker says it plainly: the lids and dividers are not watertight, so pack dry foods only. No salsa, no dressing, no cut fruit swimming in juice. Steel also rules out the microwave in practice, and the listing makes no microwave or dishwasher claim, so plan to eat this box cold.

The Yummy Bowl recommends the brand for sandwiches and dry foods, calling its stainless design durable and easy to clean, though it reviewed the Large Trio rather than the five-section Cinco.

Why we like it

  • 18/8 stainless steel is all that touches food, per LunchBots
  • Five sections keep foods apart
  • 32-ounce size suits light adult lunches
  • Maker says built to last a lifetime

Key specifications

Model LB-CINCOB
Capacity 32 oz
Compartments 5
Material 18/8 stainless steel
Leak claim Not watertight; dry foods only
Microwave Not stated; plan on no
Dishwasher Not stated
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

Choose it for a cold, dry snack-style lunch, or if avoiding plastic matters more to you than reheating. It is also a sensible long-term buy for anyone hard on lunch gear.

Skip it if you pack anything wet or want to reheat. The maker says dry foods only, so this is the least flexible box here.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • No plastic against food
  • Very durable
  • Five sections
  • Easy to wash

Cons

  • Dry foods only
  • No reheating in the box
  • Listing says kids, so check that the size suits you
  • Care and warranty not on the listing

8. OmieBox Insulated Bento Box with Food Jar – Hot and Cold in One Box

Best for kidsOmie OmieBox Kids Insulated Leakproof Bento Lunch Box with Food Jar (Blue)

This one is for children, and it does something the rest of this list cannot. The OmieBox has a removable 18/8 stainless steel vacuum-insulated food jar inside a bento-style box, so warm pasta can sit next to cold fruit. Jeffery’s Home, where the writer packed school lunches in both this and a Bentgo, reported that the jar kept hot food warm at midday and that the children ate more of it.

The trade-offs are real, and both reviews we found agree on them. Mabel’s Labels found it fully leakproof with deep compartments, but rated it the hardest of six boxes to open, because the jar lid needs firm grip strength. Jeffery’s Home said the same about small children and noted the box weighs about 1.7 pounds empty, matching the maker’s figure.

OmieBox recommends it from 3 years and up, and it is BPA- and phthalate-free. The seals come out for cleaning and can be replaced, as can other parts, so a worn gasket does not mean a new box. Jeffery’s Home recommends washing by hand over the dishwasher.

Adults may find the jar small. The maker’s bigger OmieBox UP says its 12-ounce jar is 40 percent larger, which puts this jar at about 8.5 ounces. That is why this is our kids’ pick and not an adult lunch. Try the lid with your child before the first school day.

Why we like it

  • Vacuum-insulated steel jar for hot food
  • Fully leakproof, per Mabel’s Labels
  • Removable, replaceable seals
  • BPA- and phthalate-free
  • Kept food warm at midday, per Jeffery’s Home

Key specifications

Model B9000
Capacity Food jar about 8.5 oz; box capacity not stated
Compartments 3, including the jar
Material 18/8 stainless jar; BPA- and phthalate-free
Leak claim Leakproof (listing)
Microwave Not stated
Dishwasher Hand washing suggested by Jeffery’s Home
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits a child who will not eat a cold lunch, since it removes the need for a separate food jar. Parents who pack warm leftovers will get the most from it.

Skip it if your child cannot yet twist a tight lid, or the backpack is already heavy. Both reviewers flag the jar lid, and the box weighs about 1.7 pounds empty.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Packs hot and cold together
  • Leakproof, per Mabel’s Labels
  • Replaceable seals
  • Durable build

Cons

  • Hardest to open, per Mabel’s Labels
  • Heavy at about 1.7 pounds
  • Small jar for adults

How to choose a bento box for your lunch

Measure your appetite in cups

As a kitchen rule of thumb, a generous plate of rice, beans and a main runs about 4 to 5 cups. Boxes under 4 cups suit lighter eaters, snacks or children. Check the total, because stacked boxes look bigger than they are. Each tier also holds less than its outside size suggests.

Match the seal to the food

Read the exact wording. Leakproof, leak-resistant and no claim at all are three different promises. Some makers also limit the claim, as Yumbox does with dips but not water, and LunchBots says dry foods only. Soup needs a jar in nearly every case.

Plan how you will reheat

Most plastic boxes allow the microwave for only some parts, usually without the lid. Check which parts before you buy. Stainless steel boxes should stay out of the microwave, and a vacuum jar removes the need for one.

Choose your material

Plastic is light and often microwave safe. Stainless steel is tough and keeps plastic away from your food, but it does not reheat. Vacuum-insulated jars are the only option here that keep food hot without power.

Think about the washing

Seals trap food. Removable gaskets clean best, and small parts can get lost. Check whether the lid and seal can go in the dishwasher, since many boxes only rate the tray.

Two hands hold a black partitioned lunch box of rice, shredded vegetables and a main
A flat box with one large section holds a plate-style meal.

Keeping a packed lunch safe in the heat

Most bento boxes are not insulated, so they do nothing to keep food cold. The USDA’s advice on keeping bag lunches safe is to use an insulated, soft-sided lunch bag and to pack at least two cold sources, such as frozen gel packs, with perishable food.

The government’s four steps to food safety set the time limit: perishable food should be refrigerated within 2 hours, or within 1 hour above 90°F, like a hot car. In a Houston summer, that one-hour rule is the one to plan around. Rice, beans, meat, cheese and crema all count as perishable once cooked or opened.

For a box that travels cold, pack food straight from the fridge rather than warm from the stove. For reheating leftovers properly, see our guide on how to reheat Mexican leftovers.

How we chose these eight boxes

We looked at bento-style lunch boxes from identifiable makers that were in stock on Amazon, then read each listing for capacity, materials, leak wording and care. We also checked CPSC recall records for each maker and found none for these lunch products.

Independent testing is thin in this category, and we would rather say so. We found no side-by-side test covering these boxes for adults. We relied on The Consumer’s Guide, The Yummy Bowl and BestReviews for adult boxes, and on Mabel’s Labels and Jeffery’s Home for children’s boxes. Several of those sources are research or personal experience, not controlled tests. We passed over the many low-cost, unknown brands on Amazon that had no independent coverage, since these boxes hold your food every day. We have not used these products ourselves.

Bento box questions, answered

What size bento box does an adult need?

As a rule of thumb, most adults do well with about 4 to 6 cups. The Bentgo Modern holds 5.5 cups and the Sistema holds 7.4, while the 34-ounce monbento holds a little over 4 cups.

Are bento boxes leakproof?

Not all of them. Some are leakproof, some leak-resistant and some make no claim, and even leakproof boxes often exclude thin liquids. Read each box’s wording and keep soup in a jar.

Can you microwave a bento box?

Often only part of it. Bentgo rates the tray or main containers, Sistema says to remove the lid, and monbento sets a limit of 3 minutes at 500 watts with the vent open. Do not put stainless steel boxes in the microwave.

How do you keep food hot in a bento box?

An ordinary bento box will not keep food hot. Use a vacuum-insulated lunch jar such as the Zojirushi Ms. Bento, or a box with a built-in food jar such as the OmieBox.

Is a stainless steel bento box better than plastic?

It is tougher and keeps plastic away from your food, but it cannot go in the microwave, and many are not watertight. Plastic is lighter and better for reheating. The right pick depends on your lunch.

Are bento boxes good for meal prep?

Yes, for one or two meals. The Sistema goes from freezer to microwave without its lid. For a full week of lunches, see our picks for the best meal prep containers.
