Kids, Desk or Gym Bag: The Best Snack Containers by Size

The best snack containers for school, the office and the gym: nine picks from OXO, Bentgo, Rubbermaid, Sistema and Pyrex, with sizes, seals and care.

Mixed berries piled in small clear plastic containers
Mixed berries in small clear containers.

A snack container has a smaller job than a lunch box, but a harder one. It rides loose in a backpack or a laptop bag, it often holds something messy, and it has to open in a hurry. Too big, and your snack rattles around in an empty box. Too small, and you’re back to a plastic bag by Wednesday.

So this guide sorts nine containers by size and use, from a 5-ounce dip cup to a 2-cup steel box. They come from makers you can find and check, and each states its capacity or count. We have not used them. Where a maker’s leakproof claim has conditions, we repeat those.

Quick verdict: which snack container to buy

Start with the OXO Prep & Go Snack & Dip Container: at 1.6 cups, it has a watertight lid and a separate lidded cup for dip, and it’s microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe. For children, the Bentgo Kids Snack has a single latch that Bentgo designed for small hands. For a desk fridge, the Pyrex 1-Cup Bowls are simple glass that can go in the microwave.

Our picks for the best snack containers

1. OXO Prep & Go Snack & Dip Container, 1.6 Cup – Dip Stays Apart From Dippers

Best overallOXO Good Grips Prep & Go Snack & Dip Container - 1.6 Cups

OXO built this around one situation: carrot sticks and hummus in the same bag. The outer container holds 1.6 cups, and an inner container with its own lid keeps the dip away from the dippers. The outer lid has a silicone gasket and two locking clips, and OXO calls it watertight.

A clear window in the lid lets you see what’s inside without opening it. OXO says the line is BPA-free and microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe, so it’s as happy with cold cut fruit as with a warm snack.

It’s a good size for one adult’s afternoon, and it’s a good test of whether you’d want other pieces from the same line, since we already cover some in our OXO food storage guide.

  • Watertight lid, per OXO

2. Bentgo Snack Cup – Toppings Twist Off the Top

Best for yogurt and granolaBentgo Snack Cup

This is shaped like a cup rather than a box. The base holds 2 cups, and a half-cup toppings compartment twists off the top, with a dual-sealing lid. That keeps granola, nuts or chips crisp and apart from yogurt or guacamole until you’re ready to eat.

There’s one condition on the leak claim. Bentgo says the base is leak-proof when the lid is attached with the logo facing right side up, so check that when you close it. It’s top-rack dishwasher safe and freezer safe, but only the base goes in the microwave.

It’s BPA-free, and Bentgo backs it with a 2-year warranty. It’s a good match for a morning at the gym or a commute, since it fits in a hand like a coffee.

Why we like it

  • Half-cup toppings section
  • 2-year warranty, per Bentgo
  • Cup shape is easy to hold
  • Top-rack dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model BGSNKCP
Capacity 2-cup base, 0.5-cup topper

Cons

  • Leak-proof only when the lid is on correctly
  • Only the base microwaves
  • Tall in a lunch bag

3. Bentgo Kids Snack Container – A Latch Small Hands Can Open

Best for kidsBentgo Kids Snack Leak-Proof 2 Compartment Bento-Style Container

Bentgo designed this for children, and it states ages 3 and up. It holds 1.5 cups, split into a 1-cup and a half-cup compartment, with a silicone seal and a single-latch design that Bentgo says is easy for little hands to open and close.

It’s the right size for daycare, school or a soccer sideline. Bentgo names fruit, vegetables, crackers and applesauce as things it keeps fresh and mess-free. The tray is removable and can go in the microwave, and the container is fridge, freezer and dishwasher safe.

It’s BPA-free. For a child who needs a full lunch rather than a snack, see our kids lunch box guide.

Why we like it

  • Maker age guidance: 3 and up
  • Single latch
  • Two compartments
  • Dishwasher safe

Key specifications

4. Bentgo Stainless Steel Snack Box – A Steel Tray With a Leak-Proof Lid

Best steel optionBentgo Stainless Steel Snack Box

If you’d rather keep your snack in steel, this has an 18/8 stainless tray that holds 2 cups across two compartments. The lid has easy-open clips and an inner seal, and Bentgo says it’s leak-proof and keeps foods separated.

The tray is top-rack dishwasher safe, but Bentgo recommends hand washing to preserve the seal in the lid, so plan on some sink time. The materials are PFAS- and BPA-free, per the maker. The listing doesn’t mention the microwave, and a metal tray doesn’t belong in one anyway.

It’s a newer Bentgo product, released in 2026 per the listing, so there’s less of a track record on it than on some older pieces.

Why we like it

  • 18/8 stainless steel tray
  • Two compartments
  • Clips and an inner seal
  • PFAS- and BPA-free, per Bentgo

Key specifications

Model BGSSSNK

5. Bentgo Prep 2-Compartment Snack Containers, 10 Pack – A Week of Snacks at Once

Best for meal prepBentgo Prep 2-Compartment Snack Containers

This is the batch option. You get ten 2-compartment trays and ten clear lids, and Bentgo embosses volume on the tray so you can portion without measuring. They stack together for storage, and the clear lids show what’s inside.

These aren’t lockable travel boxes. They’re custom-fit lids on light trays, so they suit a fridge shelf and a lunch bag that stays upright more than a backpack. Only the trays go in the microwave, not the lids.

Bentgo says they’re top-shelf dishwasher safe, but it also says hand washing will extend their life. The materials are free of PFAS and BPA, per Bentgo. The listing doesn’t state the capacity in cups, so go by the tray markings once you have them.

Why we like it

  • Ten containers
  • Volume embossed on the tray
  • Clear lids
  • Stack neatly

Key specifications

Model BGPRSNK
Capacity Not stated in cups
Compartments 2

6. Rubbermaid LunchBlox Snack Pack – Small Boxes That Snap to an Ice Pack

Best with an ice packRubbermaid LunchBlox Leak-Proof Snack Pack Lunch Containers

Rubbermaid’s kit is a little system. You get two half-cup snack containers, one 1-cup side container and a small Blue Ice block. The containers snap to the ice block, so a cold snack stays together in a bag and has its own cold source.

The lids have a silicone airtight seal to help prevent leaks, along with durable latches that are easy to open and close. They’re BPA-free and microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe.

Half a cup isn’t much, so this is about nuts, dried fruit, hummus or a small portion of something. The offer we saw came from a third-party seller, not Rubbermaid or Amazon, so check that when you buy.

Why we like it

  • Blue Ice block included
  • Containers snap to the ice
  • Silicone seal
  • Microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model 2000669
Capacity Two 0.5 cup, one 1 cup
Compartments 3 separate containers

7. Sistema Snack Pots, 130 ml, 3 Pack – Tiny Pots for Dips and Nuts

Best small potsSistema Snack Pots

Sistema’s pots are small, at 130 ml each, or about half a cup. They’re for snacks and dips on the go, with a curved lid that lets them stack and a tight fit.

The care is plain: top-rack dishwasher safe, microwave safe with the lid off, and safe in the fridge and freezer. Sistema says they’re developed and made in New Zealand, and they’re phthalate- and BPA-free. The listing says tight-fitting, and it doesn’t make a leakproof promise, so don’t count on it for something thin.

They come as a set of three, and they’re a good way to carry a few nuts, some salsa or some dressing inside a larger lunch.

Why we like it

  • Small and stackable
  • Made in New Zealand, per Sistema
  • Phthalate- and BPA-free
  • Pack of three

Key specifications

8. OXO Twist & Stack Containers, 5 oz, 3 Pack – A Screw-On Lid for Runny Snacks

Best for liquidsOXO Good Grips Twist & Stack Food Storage Container - 5 oz - 3 Pack

When the snack is applesauce or salsa, a twist lid is a good idea. OXO’s 5-ounce containers have a twistable lid with a soft-touch grip and a gasket that OXO says makes a leakproof seal. You can take the gasket out for a deep clean.

They’re BPA-free, and OXO says they resist staining and warping and are safe in the freezer and microwave. They’re top-rack dishwasher safe. The lids and containers nest for storage, so they don’t take over a cupboard.

Five ounces is small, so these pair well with something else, or suit a single portion.

Why we like it

  • Twist lid with a gasket
  • Removable gasket for cleaning
  • Resists stains, per OXO
  • Nest for storage

Key specifications

Model 11398000
Capacity 5 oz each

9. Pyrex 1-Cup Glass Bowls with Lids, 4 Pack – Plain Glass for a Desk or Fridge

Best glassPyrex 7202 1-Cup Glass Bowls & Green Lids (4-Pack) - Made in USA

For a snack that stays in an office fridge or a home pantry, glass makes sense. These are Pyrex 7202 tempered-glass bowls, 1 cup each, with green BPA-free plastic lids, and the listing says they’re made in the USA.

The bowl is safe in the microwave, preheated oven, refrigerator and freezer, and the lid is rated for the refrigerator and freezer only, so it comes off first. The glass is dishwasher safe and the lid is top-rack safe.

This is plain glass with no glaze on it. The lids don’t lock and no one claims they’re leakproof, so don’t send these loose in a backpack. And they’re heavier and more breakable than plastic, so they’re mostly for the desk. The listing notes that glass color may vary.

Why we like it

  • Tempered glass
  • Made in the USA, per the listing
  • Oven and microwave safe bowl
  • Four in the set

Key specifications

Model 7202, 7202-PC
Capacity 1 cup each
Compartments 1
Count 4 bowls, 4 lids
Material Tempered glass, BPA-free plastic lid
Seal Lid fits, no lock
Microwave and freezer Bowl both; lid freezer only
Dishwasher Bowl yes; lid top rack

Why we recommend it

It suits a desk drawer and office fridge, or someone who wants to reheat a small portion in the same dish.

Skip it if your snack travels in a bag. A locking lid is a better bet.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Reheats in the same dish
  • Plain material
  • Useful for leftovers too

Cons

  • Lids don’t lock
  • Heavier than plastic
  • Third-party seller

How to choose a snack container

Size for the snack

Half a cup is a handful of nuts or a dip. One to two cups is fruit or a light meal. Think about what you actually eat, and buy for that.

Leakproof, leak-proof or just tight

Makers use these words carefully, and so should you. OXO and Bentgo give conditions and details here, and others stop at tight-fitting. If it’s going in a laptop bag with something wet, buy a lid with a gasket, and close it the way the maker says.

Choose compartments on purpose

Compartments keep crackers from going soft next to fruit. A separate cup is better than a divider if one side is wet, since a divider doesn’t always seal.

Who is opening it?

A child at a school table needs a latch or lid they can handle. Bentgo gives an age for its kids’ box, so use the maker’s guidance.

Plastic, steel or glass

Plastic is light and can usually reheat. Steel can’t go in a microwave. Glass is heavy, but it can go in the oven too, for the Pyrex here.

Check the small print on care

Some lids can’t be microwaved and some makers suggest hand washing even when the dishwasher is allowed. We’ve noted these above.

How we picked these nine containers

We read each listing and kept containers from established makers, in stock with a new offer, that state a size or count, and none already on our food storage page. We searched for independent reviews and found mostly store listings and affiliate lists we didn’t rely on, so these picks rest on the listing and maker details rather than on a named review. We have not tested them.

We left out many multi-packs of thin containers from unfamiliar brands, as well as reusable bags, which are a different product. The Pyrex bowls are plain glass, so there’s no glaze question.

Snack box questions, answered

What size is a good snack container for kids?

Bentgo’s kids’ box is 1.5 cups, and it’s a fair reference point. For anything beyond a snack, look at a lunch box. Follow the maker’s age guidance.

Which snack container works at a desk?

One that fits your office routine. Glass with a lid suits a shared fridge, while a small box with clips suits a laptop bag.

Can I put these in the microwave?

It depends on the piece. Many allow it without the lid, and steel doesn’t go in at all. The table in each pick says what the maker says.

Do they keep food cold?

Not by themselves. Rubbermaid’s snack pack includes an ice block, and a lunch bag with an ice pack is the usual answer. See our lunch bag guide.

How do I stop a snack box from smelling?

Wash it soon after use, and take out any removable gasket for cleaning. OXO says you can remove its Twist & Stack gasket for that.

Our final pick for your bag

Start with the OXO Snack & Dip Container if you eat anything with a dip. Choose the Bentgo Kids Snack for school, and the Pyrex bowls for a desk. Bigger meals belong in our bento box guide. And if snack time turns into dinner, call to order from Julia’s menu, or read up on how to reheat Mexican leftovers.
