A utility sink has an easy life compared with a kitchen sink in one way: nobody cares what it looks like. It has a harder life in every other way. It takes paint, mud, mop water and the big pots that will not fit anywhere else, and stainless steel handles all of that without the staining a plastic tub picks up.
This guide is about that second sink, for the laundry room, garage or basement. Every pick states its steel gauge, and we point out which ones need a cabinet and which come with a faucet, since the box contents vary much more than the steel. If you are looking for the main sink in your kitchen, our other sink guides cover that job better.

Quick verdict: the best stainless steel utility sink for your room
If you have a base cabinet, buy the Ruvati 25-Inch Drop-In: 16-gauge T-304 steel and a 12-inch deep bowl. If you have a bare wall, choose the Transolid 25-Inch Freestanding for the most complete kit, or the Kraus Standart Pro 24-Inch if a shelf and a high backsplash matter more than a faucet in the box.
Five of the eight are compared below, followed by a full look at each sink and what to check before you order.

Our picks for the best stainless steel utility sink
Each listing here states its gauge. Two need a cabinet and a counter cutout, and most of the others stand on their own legs.
1. Ruvati 25-Inch Drop-In Utility Sink – Thick Steel for an Existing Counter

If your laundry room or garage already has a base cabinet, this is where we would start. Ruvati’s RVU6015 is a drop-in sink in 16-gauge T-304 stainless steel, the thicker of the two gauges common on this page, with a bowl 23 inches wide, 18 inches front to back and 12 inches deep. That depth is what separates a utility sink from most kitchen sinks: it holds a mop bucket, a load of hand washing or a muddy pair of boots.
The listing asks for a 27-inch minimum base cabinet and includes a cutout template, mounting brackets, a bottom rinse grid and a basket strainer drain assembly. There is no faucet in the box, so budget one in. Ruvati says it is cUPC compliant and approved by IAPMO to meet U.S. and Canadian plumbing standards, and it adds rubber padding to cut noise and condensation.
Why we like it
- 16-gauge T-304 stainless, per the maker
- 12-inch deep bowl
- Grid, drain and template in the box
- cUPC compliant, per the maker

Why we recommend it
This suits anyone replacing a plastic tub with something permanent, or fitting out a laundry counter from scratch. It is a thick, deep bowl from a sink maker that states its gauge, grade and plumbing approval plainly.
Skip it if you have no cabinet. A freestanding sink below will save you the carpentry.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Thick steel
- Deep bowl
- Rubber padding for noise and condensation
Cons
- Needs a cabinet and counter cutout
- Faucet sold separately
- Warranty not stated in the listing
2. Kraus Standart Pro 24-Inch Freestanding Sink – Legs, Shelf and a High Backsplash

Kraus sells this as a commercial-style laundry sink, but its size suits a home: 24 by 24 inches and 42 1/2 inches tall, with a 12-inch deep bowl holding 16.5 gallons. It stands on stainless legs with adjustable feet, and a built-in shelf that Kraus rates to 120 pounds sits below the bowl. The high backsplash protects the wall, which matters in a garage with bare drywall.
The steel is 18-gauge, a little thinner than Ruvati’s but fine for most household jobs. Kraus says the sink can also be mounted to a wall for added stability, and the deck is drilled for a one-hole faucet, which you buy separately. The kit includes a drain assembly with a removable strainer and a mounting plate. The listing does not state a plumbing certification, so ask your plumber if your local code calls for one.
Why we like it
- Built-in shelf rated to 120 pounds
- Adjustable legs, optional wall mounting
- 12-inch bowl, 16.5 gallons
- Sold and shipped by Amazon when we checked

Choose this for a garage, shop or unfinished basement where there is no cabinet to drop a sink into. The shelf gives you a place for buckets and bottles, and it is the one to buy if a well-known sink name matters to you.
Skip it if you want everything in one box. There is no faucet here.
Pros and cons
Pros

- Useful shelf

- Faucet sold separately

- Thinner than 16-gauge

3. Transolid 25-Inch Freestanding Sink With Faucet – The Most Complete Box

This is the freestanding sink for someone starting with bare walls and two pipes. Transolid packs in the basin, stand, a high-arc dual-spray faucet, supply hoses, a P-trap, a drain strainer, a roller mat and a sink grid. Many sinks here leave out at least one of those. Assembly is required, but you should not have to make a second trip to the store.
The steel is 18-gauge 304 with sound-deadening panels, and the 25 by 22 inch footprint is meant to fit standard laundry alcoves. Transolid gives a 12-inch deep basin (the bowl is 11.5 inches) holding 20 gallons. The faucet carries a garden hose adapter, which is handy for filling buckets, and the listing states cUPC certification and a limited lifetime warranty.
Why we like it
- Faucet, hoses and P-trap all included
- Limited lifetime warranty, per the listing
- cUPC certified, per the listing
- Garden hose adapter on the faucet

- Nearly complete kit
- Long warranty
- Fits a standard alcove, per the maker
Cons
- Assembly required
- Third-party seller
4. Transolid 25-Inch Drop-In or Undermount Sink Kit – Two Mounts, Faucet Included

Where the Ruvati makes you buy a faucet separately, this Transolid kit includes one: a 1.8 GPM flexible-neck faucet with a spray head. It also includes a stainless rollmate, a removable bottom grid, a flip-top strainer, a cutout template and hardware. The sink itself is 16-gauge 304 stainless with 3-millimeter sound-deadening pads, measuring 25 by 22 by 12 inches with a 22 1/2 by 17 inch bowl.
It can go in as a top-mount or undermount sink, which keeps your options open if you may replace a laminate counter later. Transolid suggests it for laundry rooms, garages and outdoor kitchens, and gives a capacity of 20 gallons along with a lifetime limited warranty. It says no professional installer is needed, though tools are, and we would still call a plumber if you are cutting into a countertop for the first time.
Why we like it
- 16-gauge 304 stainless, per the listing
- Faucet, grid and rollmate included
- Top-mount or undermount
- Lifetime limited warranty, per the listing

Pros
- Thick steel
- Faucet in the box
- Two mounting options
Cons
- Counter cutout needed
- Plumbing certification not stated in this listing
- Third-party seller

5. Ruvati 23-Inch Undermount Workstation Utility Sink – Deep Bowl With a Working Top

At 13 inches, this has the deepest stated bowl on the page, and it fits a smaller room too, with a 25-inch minimum base cabinet. It mounts under the counter, so a solid-surface top wipes straight into the bowl. Ledges on the front and back carry a mahogany cutting board and a stainless roll-up drying rack, both included, which turns the top of the sink into a work surface for flowers, plants or a messy hobby.
It is 16-gauge T-304 stainless with heavy rubber padding, and Ruvati says it is cUPC certified and tested by IAPMO. A bottom grid and basket strainer drain assembly are in the box. Undermount sinks need a counter that can take a sealed cut edge, so laminate is out unless your installer says otherwise. It also needs a faucet that mounts on the counter, which you buy separately.
Why we like it
- 13-inch deep bowl, the deepest stated here
- Cutting board and drying rack included
- 16-gauge T-304 stainless, per the maker
- cUPC certified, per the maker

This suits a finished laundry room or butler’s pantry with a stone or solid counter. It is the neatest-looking option, and the accessories make the small footprint work harder.
Skip it if you have laminate counters or want the cheapest route to a deep bowl.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Deepest stated bowl
- Useful accessories
- Small cabinet size
Cons
- Needs a suitable counter
- Faucet sold separately
- Installation is more involved
6. Trinity Basics 21.5-Inch NSF Freestanding Sink – Slim, With Anti-Tip Hardware

Trinity Products International sells this sink directly, and it is a plain, practical design. It is 21.5 inches wide and 24 inches deep, which is the narrowest freestanding footprint here. The basin is 18 by 16 inches and holds 16.21 gallons, and Trinity says the sink can support 300 pounds. It comes with a fixed hot and cold faucet, hoses for 3/8-inch fittings, a strainer and drain assembly, and anti-tip hardware.
The steel is 18-gauge 304, with stainless legs and adjustable feet. The listing states NSF certification for use with food supplies and says the faucet and drain are UPC certified. The P-trap is not included, and the maker says it is for indoor environments. At 49.2 inches overall it is tall, including a 6-inch backsplash with a ribbed surface for accessories, so check any shelf or cabinet above it.
Why we like it
- NSF certified, per the listing
- UPC and cUPC certified faucet, per the listing
- Anti-tip hardware included
- Supports up to 300 pounds, per the maker
Key specifications

Skip it if you want a spray head. The fixed faucet is basic.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Smallest width here
- Certifications stated
- Includes faucet
Cons
- P-trap not included
- Fixed faucet
- One-year warranty

7. Transolid 28-Inch Freestanding Sink With Pull-Down Faucet – Wide Basin for Big Items

This Transolid trades depth for width. The 28-inch footprint gives a 25.625-inch interior, which suits long tools, pet washing and trays, but the basin is only 9 inches deep, the shallowest on this page. That is easier on your back when you are leaning over a dog, and it does hold 18 gallons.
It is 18-gauge stainless steel with a washstand and storage shelf, and it can stand on levelling feet or fix to wall studs through holes in the apron. The pull-down faucet is included, along with a garden hose adapter. The drain assembly, P-trap and supply hoses are not, so add those to the order. Transolid states cUPC and IAPMO certification and a limited lifetime warranty, and allows for indoor and covered outdoor use. It estimates assembly at 30 to 45 minutes.
Why we like it
- 28-inch footprint, 25.625-inch interior
- Pull-down faucet included
- Freestanding or wall-mounted
- Limited lifetime warranty, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | EWS-2822S |
|---|---|
| Install type | Freestanding or wall-mounted |
| Gauge and steel | 18-gauge stainless |

| Bowl depth | 9 in. |
| Faucet included | Yes, pull-down |
| Plumbing note | cUPC, IAPMO; drain, trap and hoses extra |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime |
Why we recommend it
Choose this if your jobs are long more than deep: bathing a dog, rinsing grill grates or cleaning garden tools. The lower basin depth makes that kind of work easier.
Skip it if you soak laundry or fill tall buckets. A 12-inch bowl will do that better.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Widest basin here
- Faucet included
- Covered outdoor use allowed
Cons
- Shallowest bowl
- Drain and hoses extra
- Third-party seller
8. Hally 15-Inch Bowl Single-Compartment Sink – A Small Square Prep Tub

Hally sells this for bars, kitchens and laundry rooms alike, and it is the small sink on this page. The bowl is 15 inches long, 15 inches wide and 12 inches deep, so you keep most of the depth of a laundry sink in a much smaller footprint. It is 18-gauge type 304 stainless, with an 8-inch faucet, a 3 1/2-inch basket strainer and a backsplash.
It reads as a small-business sink, which is no bad thing for a home workshop or an outdoor bar. The listing mentions NSF certification for the sink and faucet, and we would ask the seller for documents if your local inspector cares about that. It does not state overall dimensions or a warranty, so check the size with the seller before you order. Hally appears to sell mainly online, and we have treated it as an Amazon-first brand.
Why we like it
- 12-inch depth in a small bowl
- 18-gauge type 304 stainless, per the listing
- Faucet and strainer included
- Sold by the maker when we checked
Key specifications
| Model | S1C-1515-0 |
|---|---|
| Install type | Single-compartment sink |
| Gauge and steel | 18-gauge 304 |

| Bowl depth | 12 in. |
| Faucet included | Yes, 8 in. |
| Plumbing note | NSF per listing; certifier not named |
| Warranty | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
This suits a small room where a full laundry sink will not fit, or a hobby space where you just need a deep bowl and a tap.
Skip it if you need to fit large items. The bowl is square and small.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Small footprint
- Deep for its size
- Faucet included
Cons
- Amazon-first brand
- Overall size not stated
- Certifier not named
How to choose a stainless steel utility sink
The job of a utility sink is different from a kitchen sink. It takes the things you would rather keep out of the kitchen: paint brushes, muddy boots, a mop bucket, hand laundry and, at a restaurant or at home, the odd oversized stockpot. These are the things we would look at.
Gauge, and how much it matters
A lower gauge means thicker steel. We kept this list to sinks whose gauge is stated, and left out several freestanding models that give none. World Coppersmith lists 16-gauge at .0625 inch and 18-gauge at .055 inch, and calls the difference between them very minimal, so do not overpay for it unless you expect hard knocks. It notes that low-end sinks tend to be 22 or 23 gauge. The steel grade matters too: every sink here states 304 stainless except the Kraus and the wide Transolid, whose listings give only the gauge.
Cabinet or legs
A drop-in or undermount sink needs a base cabinet and a counter, and both Ruvati listings state a minimum cabinet size. A freestanding sink brings its own legs and is simpler in a garage or an unfinished basement. If your floor is uneven, adjustable feet are worth having, and a wall fixing gives extra stability. A tall freestanding sink can tip, so use the anti-tip or wall options where the maker offers them.
Bowl depth
Twelve inches is the common figure here. It holds a bucket and contains splashes. A deeper bowl means more bending, and the 9-inch Transolid is easier on the back for long, flat items. For a sink used mainly by children or a seated person, measure the height of the rim as well.
What is in the box
Read this part closely. Some kits include the faucet, hoses and trap, while others include only a strainer. A missing P-trap is a small purchase, but it is also a second trip to the store with the water off.
Plumbing approval
Ruvati and Transolid state cUPC on some of these listings, and Trinity states NSF plus UPC on its faucet and drain. The listings for Kraus and the Transolid drop-in do not state one. We do not know what your local code requires, so ask your plumber, especially if you are adding a drain line to a garage.

How we picked these eight utility sinks
We have not used these sinks for this guide, and we make no claim that Julia’s uses them. We read each listing through Amazon’s product data for stock, seller, gauge, dimensions and what is included, and counted only sinks in stock and offered new. A stated gauge was required, which ruled out several popular freestanding models that name only a steel type. We also looked for Houzer and Elkay models and could not find a suitable one in stock with a stated gauge. Kohler’s Undertone utility sink is in stock, but its listing gives no gauge. For what gauge means we read World Coppersmith’s guide, which is a sink maker’s own page. We did not find an independent test of utility sinks that we would rely on, so the picks rest on listing and maker details. We also searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall data by brand and found nothing covering these sinks.
Utility sink questions, answered
What is the best stainless steel utility sink?
If you have a cabinet, the Ruvati RVU6015 drop-in at 16-gauge with a 12-inch bowl. If you do not, the Kraus Standart Pro freestanding or the more complete Transolid kit.
Is 16-gauge better than 18-gauge for a utility sink?
It is thicker, and World Coppersmith suggests it for a larger or more demanding sink. It also calls the difference minimal. Either is a reasonable choice for a house, and we would decide on size and what is in the box first.
Can a utility sink go in a garage?
Yes, if you have supply lines and a proper drain. Trinity’s listing says its sink is for indoor environments, while Transolid allows for covered outdoor use on the 28-inch model. In a cold climate, think about freezing pipes first. Ask a plumber if you do not already have a drain there.
Can I use a utility sink for food prep?
Some of these are also marketed for prep, and Trinity states NSF certification for use with food supplies. If you use a sink for paint or chemicals, do not also use it for food.
Do these sinks come with a faucet?
Some do. In this list, the three Transolid models, the Trinity and the Hally include one. The two Ruvatis and the Kraus do not.
Our final pick for the laundry room or garage
The best stainless steel utility sink for most homes with a cabinet is the Ruvati drop-in, and for a bare wall, the Transolid freestanding kit is the easiest complete purchase. For the sink in your kitchen, see our single bowl kitchen sink guide and our undermount stainless sink guide, and keep things tidy below with our under-sink organizer guide. When the cleaning is done and nobody wants to cook, call to order or look over Julia’s menu.
