Straw Lids and Ice: Best Tumbler Cold Drinks Picks Compared

Best tumbler cold drinks picks: nine insulated straw tumblers compared on leakproof lids, makers' cold claims, carbonation and lead statements.

A glass of iced coffee with a black straw on a cafe table, cushions behind
Iced coffee with a straw on a cafe table.

Houston summers are long, and a cold drink that is still cold at 4 p.m. is worth something. An insulated tumbler with a straw lid keeps iced coffee, agua fresca, iced tea or plain ice water cold for hours, sweat-free, and in a cup holder rather than a puddle on the seat.

This guide is the cold-drink version of our complete tumbler guide. Every tumbler here is built around a straw or spout lid for sipping cold drinks, and we compare them on the things that matter for ice: how long the maker says drinks stay cold, whether the lid is leakproof or only leak-resistant, whether it can take carbonated drinks, and what each maker says about lead in the vacuum seal.

Quick verdict: which cold-drink tumbler to buy

For most people, the best tumbler for cold drinks is the BrüMate Era 40 oz: BrüMate calls its straw lid 100% leakproof, including with carbonated drinks, claims 24+ hours cold, and backs it with a lifetime warranty. If you want a flip straw that snaps shut, choose the Stanley Quencher ProTour 30 oz. If you want a maker that states its tumblers are lead-free, look at the Owala FreeSip Tumbler 40 oz.

Below, nine tumblers from nine makers, with one honest reason to skip each.

Our picks for the best tumbler cold drinks lovers can carry

Every tumbler here is double-wall vacuum-insulated stainless steel with a straw or spout lid. None repeats a pick from our main tumbler guide or our coffee travel mug guide; where a brand appears on both pages, it is a different model, and we say why we chose it for cold drinks.

1. BrüMate Era 40 oz – Leakproof Even with Fizz

Best overallBrüMate Era 40 oz Tumbler with Handle and Straw

Most straw tumblers leak if you tip them over in a bag, and most makers tell you to keep carbonated drinks out of them. BrüMate says the Era is the exception: its listing calls the Era series the only 100% leakproof straw tumbler that works for both cold and carbonated drinks, thanks to what BrüMate calls Ü-Turn technology. That makes it the pick for sparkling water, soda or a fizzy agua fresca on the go.

The straw is stainless steel, which BrüMate calls ColdKey, with a soft silicone tip. BrüMate says its insulation keeps drinks ice-cold for 24+ hours. The 40-ounce size has a handle and a tapered base that, per the listing, fits all standard cup holders.

Most Era bodies are dishwasher safe and all lids and straws are top-rack dishwasher safe, according to the listing, and BrüMate backs the Era with a lifetime guarantee. We did not find a BrüMate statement about the material used in its vacuum seal.

Why we like it

  • Straw lid sold as 100% leakproof, per BrüMate
  • Rated for carbonated drinks
  • 24+ hours cold, per BrüMate
  • Stainless steel straw with silicone tip
  • Lifetime warranty

Key specifications

Model BERA40BA
Capacity 40 oz
Lid type Straw lid, stainless ColdKey straw
Cold claim 24+ hours
Leak claim 100% leakproof, carbonation-safe
Dishwasher safe Most bodies; lid and straw top rack
Lead statement Not found
Warranty Lifetime

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who throws a full cup in a bag, and anyone who drinks sparkling water or soda, which most straw tumblers are not meant to hold.

Skip it if you want a maker’s statement on the vacuum seal; we did not find one from BrüMate.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Strongest leak claim here
  • Works with carbonated drinks
  • Metal straw

Cons

  • Not every body color is dishwasher safe
  • No seal-material statement found

2. Stanley Quencher ProTour Flipstraw 30 oz – A Straw That Snaps Shut

Best flip strawSTANLEY Quencher ProTour Flipstraw Tumbler

Our main tumbler guide picks Stanley’s Quencher H2.0 and IceFlow. The ProTour is a different design and the one we prefer for cold drinks on the move: the straw is built into the lid, flips up to drink and snaps shut to stop spills, and Stanley calls the tumbler leakproof.

The 30-ounce size has a textured handle and a narrow base that, per the listing, fits most car cup holders. Stanley says the double-wall vacuum insulation keeps drinks ice cold for hours, without giving a number. It is made from 18/8 recycled stainless steel, it is BPA-free and dishwasher safe, and it carries a lifetime warranty.

On lead, Stanley’s own FAQ says its manufacturing process uses an industry-standard pellet to seal the vacuum insulation at the base, that the sealing material includes lead, and that the area is covered with a stainless steel layer, making it inaccessible. Stanley says no lead is present on any surface that touches you or your drink. A 2024 Stanley recall covered Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs, not the Quencher.

Why we like it

  • Flip straw closes for transport
  • Sold as leakproof, per Stanley
  • Narrow base fits most cup holders
  • Dishwasher safe; lifetime warranty

Key specifications

Model 10-12485-073
Capacity 30 oz
Lid type Built-in flip straw
Cold claim “Ice cold for hours”
Leak claim Leakproof
Dishwasher safe Yes
Lead statement Seal includes lead, covered by steel (Stanley)
Warranty Lifetime

Why we recommend it

It suits the gym bag, the commute and the car, where a straw that closes matters more than the last hour of ice.

Skip it if you would rather avoid a lead-containing base seal altogether, even a covered one; the Owala or Hydro Flask fit that better.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Closing flip straw
  • Fully dishwasher safe
  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • No hours given for cold retention
  • Lead-containing seal, covered, per Stanley

3. Owala FreeSip Tumbler 40 oz – Straw or Swig, Lead-Free per Owala

Best sip-or-swigOwala FreeSip Tumbler Stainless Steel Water Bottle 40 oz Black Cherry

Owala’s patented FreeSip spout, familiar from its bottles, comes to a 40-ounce tumbler here. You sip upright through the built-in straw or tilt the cup and swig from the wider opening. A push-button lid keeps the spout covered, and Owala calls the lid leak-proof.

The listing says the double-wall insulation keeps water cold for up to 24 hours (the title calls it triple-layer). The lid is double-threaded and the handle works for left- or right-handed drinkers, and the wide opening takes ice cubes and a sponge easily. The base is cup holder-friendly.

Owala’s FAQ states that all Owala bottles and tumblers are and always have been lead free, and that it has used a lead-free solder from the start; the listing also says BPA, lead and phthalate free. Two notes: the cup should be hand washed to keep its finish (the lid is dishwasher safe), and Owala says it is not for hot liquids.

Why we like it

  • Straw or swig from one spout
  • Push-button lid covers the spout
  • Up to 24 hours cold, per Owala
  • Lead-free solder, per Owala

Key specifications

Model C08825
Capacity 40 oz
Lid type Push-button FreeSip spout
Cold claim Up to 24 hours
Leak claim Leak-proof lid
Dishwasher safe Lid only; hand wash cup
Lead statement Lead free, lead-free solder (Owala)
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits big water drinkers who like to gulp as well as sip, and anyone who wants a clear lead-free statement from the maker.

Skip it if everything you own goes in the dishwasher; the cup is hand-wash only.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Two ways to drink
  • Covered spout
  • Maker states lead free

Cons

  • Hand wash the cup
  • Not for hot drinks

4. Takeya Straw Tumbler with Handle 40 oz – Splash Guard, Lifetime Warranty

Best desk cupTakeya Stainless Steel Tumbler with Handle and Straw (40 oz

Takeya’s 40-ounce straw tumbler is a plain big cup with a handle. The listing says the double-wall stainless steel keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours, and the sweat-free outside means no ring on the desk.

The lid is gasket-fitted and twists on firmly, with a splash guard to reduce spills while you drink through the included straw. Note the wording: Takeya says it reduces spills, not that it is leakproof, so this is a cup for the desk and the car, not the bottom of a bag. The handle is sturdy and the base fits most car cup holders.

It is made of 18/8 food-grade stainless steel with a BPA-free lid, and the tumbler and lid are dishwasher safe. Takeya gives a limited lifetime warranty. We did not find a Takeya statement on seal material.

Why we like it

  • Up to 24 hours cold, per Takeya
  • Gasket lid with splash guard
  • Cup and lid dishwasher safe
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

It suits anyone who wants a big cup of ice water at the desk all day and does not need it to survive a tumble in a bag.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Big capacity with handle
  • Fully dishwasher safe
  • Long cold claim

Cons

  • Not leakproof
  • Straw stays open

5. Simple Modern Iced Coffee Tumbler 24 oz – An Iced Coffee Cup That Fits

Budget pickSimple Modern Iced Coffee Tumbler

Our main tumbler guide picks Simple Modern’s big 40-ounce Trek. This is a different, smaller cup, and for a daily iced coffee it is often the better size: 24 ounces holds a large coffee and plenty of ice, and the tapered shape fits a cup holder or a hand.

A silicone gasket grips the straw to minimize leaks and splashes, and Simple Modern calls the lid spill-resistant. The double-wall vacuum insulation keeps drinks cold for hours and stops condensation, according to the listing, though it does not give a number.

It is made of food-grade 304 (18/8) stainless steel and carries a limited lifetime warranty. The listing does not say whether it is dishwasher safe, and we did not find a seal-material statement for this model.

Why we like it

  • 24 oz fits a large iced coffee
  • Silicone gasket holds the straw
  • Sweat-free outside
  • Limited lifetime warranty

Key specifications

Model CLS-SF-24-MB

Skip it if you want a stated cold-retention figure or a leakproof lid; it offers neither.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Right size for iced coffee
  • Lifetime warranty
  • Simple to use

Cons

  • No hours given for cold
  • Dishwasher use not stated

6. Hydro Flask Travel Tumbler 40 oz – Flexible Straw, No-Lead Sealing per Hydro Flask

Best big straw cupHydro Flask Travel Tumbler with Handle

Our main tumbler guide picks Hydro Flask’s 20-ounce All Around tumbler; this is the 40-ounce Travel Tumbler, with a handle, built for refilling less often. Hydro Flask’s TempShield double-wall vacuum insulation keeps drinks cold for hours, per the listing, and the cup fits most cup holders.

The press-in lid takes a flexible straw that is soft on the teeth and bends whichever way you sip. Hydro Flask calls the lid leak-resistant, not leakproof, so carry it upright. The listing says the stainless steel leaves no flavor behind, so today’s water does not taste of yesterday’s iced tea, and the lid comes apart to go in the dishwasher with the cup.

On lead, Hydro Flask has said publicly that it does not use lead in its vacuum sealing process and moved to a lead-free process more than a decade ago. The listing gives a lifetime warranty.

Why we like it

  • 40 oz with a handle
  • Flexible straw, easy on the teeth
  • No lead in vacuum sealing, per Hydro Flask
  • Dishwasher safe; lifetime warranty

Key specifications

Model TT40PS678
Capacity 40 oz

Leak claim Leak-resistant
Dishwasher safe Yes
Lead statement No lead in vacuum sealing (Hydro Flask)
Warranty Lifetime

Why we recommend it

It suits all-day water drinkers who want a big cup, a soft straw and a maker that says it does not use lead in the seal.

Skip it if you need a lid that can ride sideways in a bag; Hydro Flask only calls it leak-resistant.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Big capacity, handle
  • Fully dishwasher safe
  • Clear lead statement

Cons

  • Leak-resistant only
  • No hours given for cold

7. Contigo Streeterville 2.0 24 oz – Lid Seals When the Straw Comes Out

Best self-sealing lidContigo Streeterville 2.0 Stainless Steel Travel Tumbler

Contigo’s twist on the straw lid is the AUTOCLOSE seal: when you pull the straw out, the lid closes on its own, so you can drop the cup in a bag with the straw stored separately. That solves the open-straw problem that makes most straw tumblers a bag risk.

Contigo says the 24-ounce Streeterville 2.0 keeps drinks cold for up to 20 hours with double-wall vacuum insulation. A nonslip grip base keeps it from sliding on a desk, and the BPA-free flex straw and lid are top-rack dishwasher safe; the stainless body is hand washed.

The listing does not give a warranty, and we did not find a Contigo statement on seal material. A 2019 Contigo recall covered kids’ water bottles, not this tumbler.

Why we like it

  • Lid closes itself when the straw is removed
  • Up to 20 hours cold, per Contigo
  • Nonslip base
  • Lid and straw top-rack dishwasher safe

Key specifications

Model 2215471

  • Compact 24 oz size

Cons

  • Hand wash the body
  • Warranty not stated

8. Corkcicle Cold Cup 24 oz – Triple Insulated, Flat Sides

Easiest to holdCorkcicle Cold Cup 24 oz Triple Insulated

Corkcicle’s Cold Cup is shaped differently from a round tumbler: it has flat sides that are easy to grip, and a non-slip silicone base. Corkcicle says its triple-wall insulation keeps drinks cold for up to 12 hours or hot for up to 5, so the cold claim is shorter than the 24-hour cups here but honest about it.

The 24-ounce size is cupholder-friendly, and the flexible straw tab lets you sip at an angle. The listing describes a secure lid and a spill-safe seal, but not a leakproof one. It is stainless steel with BPA-free materials, and Corkcicle says the design is dishwasher safe.

The listing does not state a warranty, and we did not find a Corkcicle statement on seal material.

Why we like it

  • Flat sides, easy grip
  • Non-slip silicone base
  • Cold up to 12 hours, per Corkcicle
  • Dishwasher safe, per the listing

Key specifications

Model CK-2224GW
Capacity 24 oz
Lid type Straw lid, flexible straw tab
Cold claim Up to 12 hours
Leak claim Spill-safe seal
Dishwasher safe Yes, per the listing
Lead statement Not found
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits smaller hands and anyone who finds round tumblers slippery, for a drink that will be finished within the afternoon.

Skip it if you want ice to last overnight; Corkcicle’s own claim is 12 hours.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Comfortable shape
  • Non-slip base
  • Dishwasher safe

Cons

  • Shortest cold claim here
  • Warranty not stated

9. YETI Rambler 35 oz Straw Mug 2.0 – Wide Straw, Welded Handle

Best for thick drinksYETI Rambler 35 oz Straw Mug 2.0 - Insulated Tumbler With Handle - Black

Our main tumbler guide picks YETI’s 20-ounce Rambler with a sliding lid, which is a better hot-coffee cup. For cold drinks, the 35-ounce Straw Mug is the YETI to look at: the listing describes a wide, durable straw that makes sipping iced coffee, sweet tea and ice water easy, and a wide straw also helps with thicker drinks like a licuado.

The 2.0 version has a welded handle, which YETI says gives a strong, comfortable grip, and the mug fits most cup holders. YETI says the double-wall vacuum insulation keeps cold drinks ice-cold all day, and the mug is dishwasher safe.

The listing does not call the straw lid leakproof, so keep it upright, and it does not give a warranty. We could not read YETI’s statement on seal material directly, so we do not summarize it here; check YETI’s manufacturing FAQ if that matters to you.

Why we like it

  • Wide reusable straw
  • Welded handle
  • Dishwasher safe
  • Fits most cup holders

Key specifications

Model 21071508170

  • No leak claim
  • Warranty not stated in the listing

How to choose a tumbler for cold drinks

Leakproof, leak-resistant or spill-resistant

These words mean different things, and makers choose them carefully. “Leakproof” (BrüMate, Stanley ProTour, Owala) means the maker says it can be tipped over closed. “Leak-resistant” or “spill-resistant” (Hydro Flask, Takeya, Simple Modern) means it handles a bump on the desk, not a ride sideways in a bag. If the cup goes in a backpack, buy one sold as leakproof, or one like the Contigo that seals when the straw comes out.

Cold-retention claims

Every hour figure on this page is the maker’s own, and makers do not all measure the same way. Treat them as a rough ranking: a 24-hour claim usually beats a 12-hour one, and “cold for hours” with no number tells you little. Filling the cup with plenty of ice, and chilling it with ice water for a minute first, helps any tumbler.

Carbonated drinks

Pressure from fizzy drinks can push liquid up a straw or pop a lid. BrüMate is the only maker here that rates its straw tumbler for carbonated drinks; for the others, check the care guide before filling with soda or sparkling water.

Lead in the vacuum seal

Some vacuum tumblers are sealed at the base with a small pellet of solder, and some of those solders contain lead. Stanley says its sealing material includes lead and is covered with a stainless steel layer, inaccessible in normal use. Owala says its tumblers use lead-free solder, and Hydro Flask says it does not use lead in its vacuum sealing. For the other makers on this page we did not find or could not confirm a statement, so we list them as “Not found”. If this matters to you, ask the maker before you buy, and contact the maker if a base cap ever comes off.

Size and cleaning

A 24-ounce cup fits a large iced coffee and most hands; a 40-ounce cup with a handle is for all-day water. Straws and gaskets are where residue builds up, so look for a lid that comes apart, and wash straws with a brush.

How we chose these nine tumblers

We looked for insulated stainless steel tumblers with straw or spout lids from established drinkware makers, sold on Amazon US and listed in stock when we checked. We left out every model on our main tumbler guide and coffee travel mug guide, color variants of the same cup, and anonymous brands that exist only on Amazon.

Capacity, lid design, cold-retention claims, dishwasher safety and warranties come from the Amazon listings; lead statements come from the makers’ own FAQs or public statements. Where we found no statement, we say so. We have not used these tumblers in our kitchen; this is a comparison of what the makers state. We also checked the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall database for each maker; the only drinkware recalls we found, from Stanley, YETI and Contigo, covered other products, not the tumblers on this page.

Cold-drink tumbler questions, answered

What is the best tumbler for cold drinks?

For most people, the BrüMate Era 40 oz, because BrüMate claims both a 100% leakproof straw lid and 24+ hours of cold, and rates it for carbonated drinks. The Stanley ProTour is the best flip-straw choice, and the Owala FreeSip Tumbler the best if a lead-free statement matters most.

Can I put soda or sparkling water in a straw tumbler?

Only if the maker says so. Of the tumblers here, BrüMate rates the Era for carbonated drinks. For the rest, the listings do not say, so check the care guide first.

How long do insulated tumblers keep ice?

Makers on this page claim from 12 hours (Corkcicle) to 24+ hours (BrüMate), with Takeya, Owala and Contigo in between. Real results depend on how much ice you use and how hot it is outside.

Do tumblers contain lead?

Some do, in the sealing pellet under the base, which makers say is covered and does not touch your drink. Stanley says its seal includes lead; Owala and Hydro Flask say they do not use lead in the seal. For the others we found no confirmed statement.

Are cold-drink tumblers dishwasher safe?

Many are, but not all. The Stanley, Takeya, Hydro Flask and YETI are listed as dishwasher safe; the Owala cup and the Contigo body should be hand washed.

Our pick for ice that lasts the afternoon

Buy the BrüMate Era if you want one cup that will not leak in a bag and can hold sparkling water. Choose the Stanley ProTour for a flip straw that closes, the Owala FreeSip Tumbler for sip-or-swig drinking and a clear lead-free statement, the Takeya for a big desk cup with a lifetime warranty, and the Simple Modern for a daily iced coffee.
