Boxed, Lead-Free and Easy to Use: The Best Wine Glasses Gift

Wine glasses make a good gift when the set suits the person. Picks with gift boxes, lead-free crystal statements and dishwasher care, per the makers.

Wine glasses look like an easy gift, but they raise a few awkward questions. Will they survive the trip? Do they fit in the recipient’s cupboard? Will they ever go in the dishwasher, or will they sit in the box waiting for a special occasion that never comes?

This guide is for the person giving the glasses, not the person building a collection. We looked for sets you can hand over with confidence: a stated gift box where one exists, a maker’s statement on lead for crystal, care that fits real life, and a count that suits a couple or a crowd. For choosing glasses for your own table, our main wine glass guide is the place to start.

Quick verdict: which wine glasses to give

For most people, the best wine glasses gift is the Gabriel-Glas StandArt Set of 2: one universal shape for red and white, in a gift box, in crystal the maker states is lead-free. For a family or a couple who host, give the Zwiesel Glas Sensa Set of 6, in dishwasher-safe Tritan crystal. For something more decorative, the Viski Meridian has a gold rim and a stated lead-free crystal.

Our picks for the best wine glasses gift

Crystal is a food-contact surface, so we required a maker’s lead-free statement or an honest note where a maker does not give one. Riedel is the one pick in the second group. Packaging is rarely described, so we say so.

1. Gabriel-Glas StandArt Crystal Wine Glasses, Set of 2 – One Glass, One Gift Box

Best overallGabriel-Glas StandArt Crystal Wine Glasses

This is the one set here built as a gift. The listing says two glasses in a gift set, and the larger set’s listing describes a gorgeous gift box for gifting and storage. The StandArt is a universal shape for white, red, sparkling and rosé, so the recipient does not need a cupboard of different glasses. It is machine-made Austrian crystal, 16 ounces and lead-free per the maker.

Wine Folly’s Madeline Puckette compared it with far costlier glasses and wrote that it overperforms for the price, adding that she was shocked at how well the machine-made glass did. The maker also says it is dishwasher safe. These glasses are thin, so some recipients may still choose to hand wash them. The seller was Gabriel-Glas North America when we checked.

2. Zwiesel Glas Sensa Wine Glasses, Set of 6 – Six Dishwasher-Safe Glasses

Best for hostsZwiesel Glas Sensa Red Wine Glass (Set of 6)

A set of six suits someone who has people over. Zwiesel says the Sensa glass suits juicy whites and reds, and it is machine-made Tritan crystal, 18.1 ounces, 9.3 inches tall, made in Germany and dishwasher safe. Zwiesel Glas, the same group as Schott Zwiesel, describes its Tritan crystal as lead-free, so it passes our lead check.

Zwiesel says its Tritan Glass Protect technology makes the glass resilient and strong, which matters for a gift that will actually be used. The packaging is not described on the listing, so you may want to check how the box looks, or wrap it well. This line is a sibling of the Pure glass on our main page, but the shape and the set are different.

3. Schott Zwiesel Tulip Burgundy Glasses, Set of 4 – A Big Bowl for Pinot Lovers

Best for pinot fansSCHOTT ZWIESEL Tulip Burgundy Red Wine Glass (Set of 4)

If you know the recipient loves Pinot Noir or Burgundy, this is a thoughtful, specific gift. The wide 26-ounce bowl, the maker says, offers plenty of space for Burgundy wines to develop their bouquet. It is Tritan crystal, made in Germany, 8.9 inches tall and 4.4 inches wide, and dishwasher safe.

Schott Zwiesel describes Tritan crystal as lead-free. A wide bowl needs a bit more space in a dishwasher rack and a cupboard, so this works best for someone who has that room. For a person who drinks a bit of everything, the Gabriel-Glas or Sensa is the better fit, and our Pinot Noir glass guide goes deeper on this style.

Why we like it

4. Viski Meridian Wine Glasses with Gold Rim, Set of 2 – A Gold Rim and a Ripple

Best decorativeViski Meridian Wine Glasses with Gold Rim

For a more decorative gift, Viski’s Meridian has a rippled texture and a gold electroplated rim, with an Art Deco feel. Viski’s own product page lists the material as lead-free crystal with a gold electroplated rim, 16 ounces, in a set of two, and it names weddings and anniversaries among the occasions.

Plan for hand washing, as Viski’s page says. The gold rim is the kind of detail that makes this a special-occasion glass. Viski’s page does not describe packaging for this set, though it mentions giftable packaging for its barware more generally. The seller was True Brands when we checked.

5. Stölzle Lausitz Quatrophil Red Wine Glasses, Set of 4 – A Pulled Stem, Machine Made

Best for two couplesStölzle Lausitz Quatrophil Red Wine Glasses Crystal

Stölzle makes this listing’s case clearly. Each stem is pulled from the bowl and melted to the base to resemble mouth-blown glass, and the glass is called 100 percent lead-free crystal. At 19.25 ounces, in a set of four, it suits weeknight reds as well as a dinner for friends. It is 9.75 inches tall and dishwasher safe.

The seller was Stolzle Lausitz USA, which makes this a statement from the maker’s own US arm. Wine Folly’s Madeline Puckette names Stölzle among the larger makers to look at for glasses under a certain price. Stölzle also says the glass is impact resistant, and we suggest you take that as the maker’s claim. No packaging is described on the listing.

Why we like it

  • 100 percent lead-free crystal, per the listing
  • Pulled stem, seamless look

8. Riedel Wine Friendly Red Wine Glasses, Set of 4 – A Name Wine Lovers Know

Best known nameRiedel Wine Friendly Red Wine - Set of 4

Some recipients will be happy just to see the name. Riedel, family owned since 1756 according to its listings, describes Wine Friendly as a versatile, universal design and an entry into its crystal glass. The set of four is dishwasher safe, per the listing, and at this level the design is simple rather than showy.

Here is our honest note. Riedel says it has produced only crystal glass since 2015, which it describes as a material that does not use lead oxide as a principal ingredient, and we found no explicit lead-free statement for this line. If lead-free wording matters to you, choose one of the sets above. This listing was sold by a third party when we checked, so look at the offer before buying a gift.

How to choose wine glasses as a gift

1. Choose by the person, not the wine list

If you know they love Pinot Noir, a Burgundy glass shows thought. If you do not, go universal. A set that can handle any wine is rarely the wrong answer.

Two hands clinking wine glasses over a table setting

2. Count the cupboard

Two glasses fit anywhere. Six need a real shelf. Big bowls can also be too tall for some cabinets and dishwasher racks.

3. Be honest about care

Very few people hand wash glasses every day. Dishwasher-safe crystal, such as Zwiesel’s Tritan, is more likely to get used. Keep gold rims and very thin glasses for people who enjoy looking after them.

Stemmed glasses, one holding sparkling wine, on a wooden table

4. Check the lead statement

Crystal was traditionally made with lead oxide, and many modern lines are not. We look for the maker’s own wording, not a seller’s. If the wording is missing or vague, we say so, as we do with Riedel.

5. Think about the box

Gabriel-Glas states a gift box. The others do not describe their packaging on the listing. Order early, inspect the box and wrap the set yourself if you need to.

How we picked these eight sets

We looked for sets from identifiable glassmakers, in stock from a new Amazon offer, with a maker’s lead statement for crystal or an honest note where there is none. We avoided exact listings on our other wine glass pages. We left out Lenox holiday glasses, which the listing describes as glass and crystal with no lead statement, and Nachtmann because we could not confirm a statement from the maker. We have not used these glasses ourselves.

We read Wine Folly’s comparison of five glasses, which praises the Gabriel-Glas StandArt and mentions Stölzle and Schott Zwiesel as makers to look at. We did not find a review we could read for the Sensa, Tulip, Meridian, Quatrophil, Revolution, Definition or Wine Friendly sets, so those rest on listing and maker details. A CPSC recall search by brand showed no notices for Gabriel-Glas, Zwiesel, Viski, Stölzle, Spiegelau or Riedel.

Wine glass gift questions, answered

What wine glasses make the best gift?

A universal, dishwasher-friendly set from a known maker suits most people. The Gabriel-Glas comes in a gift box, which saves you a step.

Are crystal wine glasses lead-free?

Many modern ones are, but check the maker’s statement. On this page, Gabriel-Glas, Zwiesel, Schott Zwiesel, Viski, Stölzle and Spiegelau state or describe lead-free material. Riedel’s wording is less direct, and we note it.

How many glasses should I give?

Two for a couple, four or six for people who host. A pair with a good bottle is often all you need.

Can I give wine glasses with a bottle of wine?

Yes, where the recipient drinks and it suits the occasion. Check local rules if you are shipping alcohol. Please enjoy wine responsibly.

Our final pick for a wine glass gift

Give the Gabriel-Glas when you want a boxed set that works for any wine, and the Zwiesel Sensa when you know the glasses will be used often.
