A glass mug shows you the coffee: the crema on an espresso, the layers in a latte, the exact moment the milk turns a café con leche the right shade of tan. It also keeps no smells from yesterday’s cup. The catch is heat. Ordinary glass can crack when boiling liquid hits it, and some glass “coffee mugs” sold online are, by their own makers’ fine print, meant for warm drinks only.
This guide sits under our coffee mug guide, which covers ceramic mugs and already includes one double-wall glass set. Here we look only at glass: double-wall borosilicate mugs that keep the outside cool, and thick single-wall mugs made from tempered or heavy glass. For each one we report what the maker says about the microwave, the dishwasher and heat shock, and we say plainly when a maker says nothing.

Quick verdict: which glass coffee mug to buy
For most people the best pick is the Luigi Bormioli Thermic Glass 13 oz Cappuccino Mug: a double-wall borosilicate mug with a handle that its maker describes as thermal shock resistant and safe in both the microwave and the dishwasher. If you want a tougher single-wall mug for everyday knocks, choose the tempered Duralex Cosy Glass Mug. To fill a whole cupboard for less, the Libbey Robusta set of twelve is the practical choice.
Below are the five strongest picks side by side, then all eight in detail, then what to check before you buy any glass mug for hot coffee.

Our picks for the best coffee mug glass
These eight cover the two kinds of glass mug worth buying for hot coffee. Double-wall borosilicate mugs trap air between two thin layers, so the outside stays cooler and the coffee is held a little longer. Single-wall mugs in tempered or thick glass are heavier and simpler, and they cost less per mug. We left out glass mugs whose own listings say they are for warm drinks only or are not microwave safe, because that is not what most people want from a coffee mug. Our coffee mug guide already recommends the Bodum Bistro 15 oz mug, so it is not repeated here.
1. Luigi Bormioli Thermic Glass 13 oz Cappuccino Mug, Set of 2 – Double Wall With a Real Handle

Luigi Bormioli is an Italian glassmaker that also makes wine and bar glasses, and its Thermic Glass line is its range for hot and cold drinks. This cappuccino mug is double-wall borosilicate, mouth-blown by hand according to the listing, and it holds 13 ounces, enough for a full mug of drip coffee or a large cappuccino with room for foam.
What puts it first is that the listing answers the three questions that matter for glass and hot coffee. It calls the mug thermal shock resistant, and it says the mug is both microwave and dishwasher safe. The double wall also prevents condensation on the outside, so an iced coffee will not leave a ring on the table. The listing gives the size as about 4.7 inches across and 3.2 inches tall, a wide, low shape that sits steady on a desk.
Unlike many double-wall glasses, this one has a handle, so you are not relying on the insulating wall alone to keep your fingers comfortable. Double-wall mugs are thinner than a diner mug, so they are lighter but less forgiving of a knock against the sink.
Why we like it
- Double-wall borosilicate glass, mouth-blown by hand (listing)
- Listed as thermal shock resistant
- Microwave and dishwasher safe, according to the listing
- Handle plus insulating wall for a comfortable grip

It suits anyone who wants one or two good glass mugs for daily hot coffee and wants clear answers on the microwave and dishwasher before buying.
Skip it if you need a set for a family; at two mugs per box, a larger set below works out simpler.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Handle on a double-wall mug
- Microwave and dishwasher safe as stated

- Thin double-wall glass is more delicate than tempered glass

2. Zwilling Sorrento Plus 12 oz Double Wall Glass Mugs, Set of 4 – Microwave, Freezer and Dishwasher Safe

Zwilling, the German company behind Henckels knives, makes the Sorrento Plus line of double-wall glassware. This set gives you four 12-ounce mugs with handles, which is the size of a standard coffee mug and a sensible count for a couple or a small household.
On its own product page Zwilling describes the glass as borosilicate, mouth-blown by skilled artisans, and safe in the microwave, freezer and dishwasher. The Amazon listing adds that the mug keeps contents hot while remaining cool to the touch, and that cold drinks stay cold with no condensation. Zwilling lists each mug at about 4.5 inches tall and 4.8 inches wide including the handle, and gives the country of origin as China.
Zwilling does not publish a temperature limit for these mugs on its page, so treat them as you would any thin glass: pour hot coffee in, but do not pour boiling water into a mug that just came out of the freezer.
Why we like it
- Four handled mugs in one box
- Microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe, according to Zwilling
- Borosilicate glass, mouth-blown (Zwilling)
- Cool to the touch with hot drinks, as the listing states

Skip it if you want a mug larger than 12 ounces for a big morning pour.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Four mugs per set
- Clear maker statement on microwave and dishwasher
- Handles on every mug
Cons
- No temperature limit published
- 12 ounces is modest for large pours
3. Bodum Canteen 13.5 oz Double Wall Glass Mug with Handle, 2 Pack – Stated Range From -22°F to 350°F

Bodum, the Danish maker of the classic French press, makes several double-wall glass lines. The Canteen is the straight-sided one, and this version adds a handle. Each mug holds 13.5 ounces. Our coffee mug guide already recommends Bodum’s Bistro mug, so we chose the Canteen here for its different shape and its stated temperature range.
That range is the reason to pick it. The listing says the mug is built to withstand temperatures from -30°C to 180°C (350°F), which is the most specific heat figure any maker on this page gives. The glass is mouth-blown borosilicate, and a small silicone valve in the base equalizes air pressure between the two layers of glass as the air inside warms and cools. The listing says the mug is dishwasher safe.
The listing for this exact handled model does not say whether it is microwave safe. Bodum lists other Canteen pieces as microwave safe, but we could not confirm it for this one, so check the box insert before you reheat coffee in it.
Why we like it
- Stated range of -30°C to 180°C (350°F) on the listing
- Silicone pressure valve between the two walls
- Mouth-blown borosilicate glass
- Handle plus double wall
Key specifications

Why we recommend it
It suits anyone who switches between very hot and very cold drinks and wants a maker’s temperature figure to go by.
Skip it if you reheat coffee in the microwave every day and want that confirmed on the listing.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Most specific temperature range on this page
- Pressure-equalizing valve
- Dishwasher safe
Cons
- Microwave use not stated for this model
- The silicone valve is one more part to keep dry and intact
4. Duralex Cosy Glass Mugs, 12 oz, Set of 6 – Tempered Glass, Made in France

Duralex is the French maker of tempered glass tumblers, plates and bowls. The Cosy is its glass mug: a single-wall cup with a handle, about 12 ounces (the listing gives 11.57 ounces), sold in a set of six.
Tempering is a heat treatment that makes glass stronger and changes how it breaks. Duralex says its tempered glass is at least two and a half times more resistant than untempered glass, that it withstands a thermal shock of up to 130°C, and that its glassware is made at its factory in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, France. The Amazon listing says the mug is dishwasher, fridge and microwave safe, and that the glass is non-porous, so it does not absorb flavors or colors from coffee.
A single wall means the outside of the mug gets hot along with the coffee; hold it by the handle. For a kitchen where mugs get knocked into the sink, though, tempered glass is the sturdier choice than thin double-wall glass.
Why we like it
- Tempered glass, which Duralex says is at least 2.5 times more resistant
- Thermal shock rating of 130°C, according to Duralex
- Microwave, fridge and dishwasher safe (listing)
- Made in France, according to Duralex
Key specifications
| Model | 4029AR06/6 |
|---|---|
| Material | Tempered glass |
| Capacity | About 12 oz (11.57 oz listed) |
| Count | 6 mugs |
| Wall | Single wall |
| Microwave safe | Yes (listing) |
| Dishwasher safe | Yes (listing) |
| Made in | France (Duralex) |
Why we recommend it
It suits a busy household that wants glass mugs for daily coffee and would rather not baby them.
Skip it if you want the cool-to-the-touch outside of a double-wall mug.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Tempered for strength
- Stated thermal shock rating
- Six per set, microwave safe
Cons
- Outside gets hot; single wall
- Just under 12 ounces per mug

5. Libbey Robusta 13 oz Glass Mugs, Set of 12 – A Dozen Thick Mugs for Hosting

Libbey is a long-established American glassmaker based in Toledo, Ohio. The Robusta is its plain, heavy glass mug, sold here as a set of twelve. Each holds 13 ounces, a normal coffee mug size, and the listing describes the glass as thick, with a comfortable handle that keeps your hand away from the heat.
We chose the Robusta over Libbey’s other glass mugs on purpose. The listings for Libbey’s Kona, Tapered and Cavana mugs say they are not microwave safe and are meant for warm rather than hot drinks. The Robusta listing makes no such warning: it names coffee, tea and hot chocolate, and says the mugs are dishwasher safe. It does not mention the microwave either way, so we list that as not stated.
Twelve mugs is a lot for a couple, but it is the right number for a family that hosts, for a coffee bar at a party, or for a household that wants spares. It is the most mugs for the money on this page.
Why we like it
- Twelve 13-ounce mugs in one set
- Thick glass with a handle (listing)
- Named for coffee, tea and hot chocolate
- Dishwasher safe
Key specifications
| Model | 5213 (182879) |
|---|---|
| Material | Glass (type not stated) |
| Capacity | 13 oz |
| Count | 12 mugs |
| Wall | Single wall |
| Microwave safe | Not stated |
| Dishwasher safe | Yes (listing) |
| Made in | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits hosts and families who want plenty of clear mugs for coffee and cocoa without buying them two at a time.
Skip it if you need a mug you can reheat coffee in; the listing does not say it is microwave safe.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Twelve mugs per set
- Thick, heavy glass
- Dishwasher safe
Cons
- Microwave use not stated
- No heat-shock figure published
- Single wall gets hot outside
6. Bodum Pavina 15 oz Double Wall Glasses, Set of 2 – Hot or Iced, No Handle Needed

The Pavina is Bodum’s rounded double-wall glass with no handle, and at 15 ounces it is the largest glass on this page. Without a handle it works as a coffee mug in the morning and an iced coffee glass in the afternoon, and the double wall means you can hold it around the middle with hot coffee inside.
The listing describes the glass as mouth-blown, heat-resistant borosilicate and says it is microwave and dishwasher safe. It also notes that the double wall prevents condensation, so iced drinks do not sweat onto the table, and it gives a one-year limited warranty.
The double wall creates the “floating” look that makes these glasses popular for layered lattes. The trade-off is the usual one for thin double-wall glass: it is light and pretty, but it will not survive the knocks that a tempered mug will.
Why we like it
- 15 ounces, the largest glass here
- Microwave and dishwasher safe (listing)
- No condensation with iced drinks
- One-year limited warranty, as listed
Key specifications
| Model | 4560-10US4 |
|---|---|
| Material | Borosilicate glass |
| Capacity | 15 oz |
| Count | 2 glasses |
| Wall | Double wall, no handle |
| Microwave safe | Yes (listing) |
| Dishwasher safe | Yes (listing) |
| Made in | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits anyone who drinks hot coffee in the morning and iced coffee later and wants one glass for both.
Skip it if you like a handle; with very hot coffee, some people will still want one.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Large capacity
- Microwave and dishwasher safe as stated
- Works hot or iced
Cons
- No handle
- Thin glass; handle with care
7. Kinto Kronos Double Wall Coffee Cup, 8.5 oz – Small Cup for Pour-Over and Flat Whites

Kinto is a Japanese tableware company with a range of coffee and tea glassware. The Kronos coffee cup is a single double-wall glass cup of 250 ml (8.5 ounces), with a raised ring around the outside instead of a handle, which the listing says gives a comfortable grip.
Eight ounces is the right size for a single pour-over, a flat white or a cortado with room to spare, and it is why we include a small cup on a page of mugs. Kinto lists the glass as heat resistant and the cup as microwave and dishwasher safe. Kinto’s own product pages give a maximum temperature difference of 120°C (248°F), warn that a sudden temperature change may break the glass, and say not to overheat it in the microwave or heat it empty. Kinto designs in Japan and lists the country of origin as China.
It is sold as a single cup, so buy two if you share your morning coffee.
Why we like it
- Stated maximum temperature difference of 120°C (Kinto)
- Microwave and dishwasher safe (listing)
- Grip ring instead of a handle
- Right size for a single pour-over
Key specifications
| Model | 23107 |
|---|---|
| Material | Heat-resistant glass |
| Capacity | 8.5 oz (250 ml) |
| Count | 1 cup |
| Wall | Double wall, grip ring |
| Microwave safe | Yes (listing) |
| Dishwasher safe | Yes (listing) |
| Made in | China (Kinto) |
Why we recommend it
It suits pour-over and espresso-drink fans who want a small, clear cup with stated heat limits.
Skip it if you drink a full 12- to 16-ounce mug of coffee at a time.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Clear maker care rules and heat limit
- Microwave and dishwasher safe
- Compact size
Cons
- Sold singly
- Small capacity
- No handle

8. Bormioli Rocco Oslo 7.5 oz Glass Coffee Mugs with Metal Handle, Set of 4 – Tulip Shape for Lattes

Bormioli Rocco is an Italian glassware company (separate from Luigi Bormioli), and the Oslo is its café-style coffee glass: a tulip-shaped tempered glass bowl with a removable polished stainless steel handle that clips on at the base. Each holds 7.5 ounces, so this is a set for cappuccinos, macchiatos and lattes rather than a big mug of drip coffee.
The listing says the glasses are tempered, thermal shock resistant and handcrafted in Spain, and that the tulip shape lets the foam on a latte open up. They are dishwasher safe with the handle removed, and the handle can be left off for a plain glass. The listing does not say whether the glasses can go in the microwave; with a metal handle attached, they certainly should not.
These are the most café-looking glasses on the page, and a set of four suits a household that makes milk drinks with an espresso machine or a frother.
Why we like it
- Tempered glass, listed as thermal shock resistant
- Removable stainless steel handle
- Made in Spain (listing)
- Dishwasher safe with the handle off
Key specifications
| Model | I0004255 |
|---|---|
| Material | Tempered glass, steel handle |
| Capacity | 7.5 oz |
| Count | 4 glasses |
| Wall | Single wall |
| Microwave safe | Not stated |
| Dishwasher safe | Yes, handle removed (listing) |
| Made in | Spain (listing) |
Why we recommend it
It suits anyone serving milk-based espresso drinks who wants them to look the way they do in a café.
Skip it if you want a full-size coffee mug; 7.5 ounces is a cappuccino, not a morning mug.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Tempered glass
- Removable handle
- Four per set
Cons
- Small capacity
- Microwave not stated; metal handle must come off to wash
How to choose a glass coffee mug
Glass is less forgiving than ceramic, so the details matter more. These are the things a kitchen checks before buying glass for hot drinks.
1. Read the hot-liquid fine print
Some glass mugs sold as “coffee mugs” are, by their makers’ own words, for warm drinks only and not for the microwave. Libbey’s Kona, Tapered and Cavana listings all say so. That is fine for an Irish coffee or a milkshake, but not for coffee straight from the pot. Look for borosilicate, tempered or heat-resistant glass, and for a listing that names hot drinks.
2. Double wall or single wall
Double-wall mugs keep the outside cool, stop condensation and hold heat a little longer, but the glass is thin. Single-wall tempered or thick glass is sturdier and cheaper, but the outside gets hot, so a handle matters more. A double-wall mug with a handle, like the Luigi Bormioli or Zwilling, gives you both.

3. Heat shock limits
Glass cracks when one part heats or cools much faster than another. Makers that publish a figure give different kinds: Bodum lists a working range of -30°C to 180°C for the Canteen, Duralex rates its tempered glass for a 130°C thermal shock, and Kinto gives a 120°C maximum temperature difference. None of those means you should pour boiling water into a mug straight from the freezer. Let a cold mug warm up first, or rinse it with warm water.
4. Microwave and dishwasher
Most picks here are listed as dishwasher safe. Microwave safety varies: Luigi Bormioli, Zwilling, Duralex, Bodum’s Pavina and Kinto say yes, while Libbey’s Robusta, the Bodum Canteen with handle and the Bormioli Rocco Oslo do not say. Never microwave a mug with a metal handle, and do not heat any glass mug empty.
5. Decorated glass
Every mug on this page is clear, undecorated glass. If you buy a glass mug with a printed design or a colored rim, look for the maker’s statement that the decoration is lead- and cadmium-free, and check whether the print is dishwasher safe. If the listing says nothing, ask the seller or choose a plain mug.
How we picked these eight glass mugs
We started from what a cook wants from a glass mug for hot coffee: glass made for heat, a sensible size, and clear care rules. We took capacity, materials, microwave and dishwasher statements from each Amazon listing, and heat limits and country of origin from the makers’ own pages where they publish them (Zwilling’s product page, Duralex’s glass information pages and Kinto’s product pages). Every mug was in stock on Amazon when we checked, and every maker is an established glassware company. We have not used these mugs for this guide; heat and care claims are the makers’.
We searched the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s recall list for every brand here. We found no recall for any of these mugs. Bodum’s recalls were for coffee presses (most recently, in October 2026, about 5.9 million French presses with replaceable glass carafes), a stovetop espresso maker and toasters, Libbey’s for other glassware (milk bottles, bourbon and cocktail glasses), and Zwilling’s for an electric kettle. We left out JoyJolt’s double-wall mugs: the brand’s single-wall Declan glass coffee mugs were recalled in June 2024 because they could break when filled with hot liquid, and with plenty of other choices we preferred makers without a glass-mug recall. We also left out the Bodum Bistro mug that already appears on our coffee mug guide, and Hario’s and Kinto’s other glass mugs, which were not reliably in stock.
Glass for café de olla and café con leche
A clear mug suits the coffee drinks of a Mexican kitchen. Café de olla, simmered with piloncillo and a stick of canela, turns a deep amber you can see through the glass, and a café con leche shows its color as the milk goes in. Strain café de olla well before pouring; grounds settle at the bottom of a clear mug where everyone can see them. For milk drinks, a milk frother makes foam that looks best in a tulip glass like the Oslo.
Glass coffee mug questions, answered
What is the best quality glass coffee mug?
For double-wall glass, the Luigi Bormioli Thermic Glass mug, which its maker lists as thermal shock resistant and safe in the microwave and dishwasher. For a sturdier single-wall mug, Duralex’s tempered Cosy mug.
Are glass coffee mugs safe for hot coffee?
Mugs made from borosilicate, tempered or heat-resistant glass are made for hot drinks, according to their makers. Some ordinary glass mugs are listed for warm drinks only, so read the listing before buying.
Can you put a double-wall glass mug in the microwave?
Some, yes: Luigi Bormioli, Zwilling, Bodum’s Pavina and Kinto list theirs as microwave safe. Do not heat one empty, and check the listing for the exact model, as Bodum’s handled Canteen listing does not say.
Why do double-wall glasses have a hole in the bottom?
Bodum’s Canteen has a small silicone valve that equalizes the air pressure between the two layers of glass as the air inside heats and cools. Keep it intact; do not pick at it.
Do glass mugs keep coffee hot?
Double-wall glass holds heat a little longer than a single wall and keeps the outside cooler, but it does not keep coffee hot for hours. For that, see our guide to insulated coffee mugs to go.
Our final pick for glass
Buy the Luigi Bormioli Thermic Glass mug if you want a double-wall glass mug with a handle and clear microwave and dishwasher rules. Choose the Duralex Cosy for toughness, the Zwilling set for four matching double-wall mugs, the Libbey Robusta to fill a cupboard, and the Kinto or Bormioli Rocco Oslo for smaller coffee drinks. For ceramic mugs, see our coffee mug guide; for tea, the tea infuser mug guide includes a double-wall glass mug with an infuser. And if you would rather have someone else make the coffee and breakfast, see the menu or call to order.
