A mug is the most forgiving way to drink a beer. It has a handle, so your hand isn’t warming the glass, and it can take a knock at a backyard table. The real choices are glass or steel, how much you want it to hold, and how many you need in the cupboard.
We kept this list to mugs and steins sold for home use, so case packs of two dozen meant for restaurants are out. If you’re looking for tulips, pints or pilsner glasses instead, our beer glasses guide covers those, and it doesn’t repeat any of the mugs here.

Quick verdict: which beer mugs to buy
Buy the Stölzle Lausitz Kaiser Beer Mugs, 0.5 Liter, Set of 6 for most homes: a traditional half-liter glass from an old glassmaker, with a stated lead- and cadmium-free glass, and enough mugs for a table. If you drink outside or want your beer to stay cold, the Stanley Stay-Chill Beer Stein, 24 oz is the steel option that won’t break.

Our picks for the best beer mugs
1. Stölzle Lausitz Kaiser Beer Mugs, 0.5 Liter, Set of 6 – A Traditional Half-Liter Mug

Stölzle Lausitz has made glass since 1889, according to the listing, and this is about as plain and useful as a beer mug gets. It holds 500 ml, or 16.9 ounces, with room for a real head when you pour a 12-ounce bottle. The mug is 134 mm tall and 95 mm wide, with a finely polished rim.
The maker lists soda lime glass, says it’s made in the EU, and describes it as sturdy and easy to clean in the dishwasher. It also states the mug is lead- and cadmium-free, which isn’t something most beer mug listings bother to mention. Soda lime glass isn’t crystal, so lead isn’t the usual worry here, but it’s good to see it in writing.
A set of six makes sense if you have guests, and it’s a home set rather than a commercial case, though six mugs will take up a real shelf. The listing doesn’t say the glass is freezer-safe. If you want frosted mugs, we’d pick the Chefcaptain below, which does say so.
Why we like it
- A half liter leaves room for a head on a full bottle
- Maker states lead- and cadmium-free glass
- Polished rim is smooth to drink from
- Six mugs for a table

Why we recommend it
It suits most homes, since it’s the size most beer pours into easily and a set of six covers a table.
Skip it if you only drink alone and have little storage, since six is more than you need.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Long-established glassmaker
- Good everyday size
- Dishwasher safe
Cons
- No freezer statement
- Takes up shelf space
2. True Extra Large Beer Mugs, 26 oz, Set of 2 – Big Pours and Thick Walls

Twenty-six ounces is a serious amount of beer, and True’s mug is built to match. The listing describes thick glass walls, a heavy base and a sturdy handle, and it suggests root beer floats and soda too, which is a good use for a mug this large.
True sells home bar gear, and this is a straightforward gift set of two. It’s dishwasher safe according to the listing. That size holds a large can and a half and leaves space for foam, so if you use it for a single 12-ounce bottle, the beer will look lost in it.
The listing doesn’t say what kind of glass it is or where it’s made, and it states no warranty. It also doesn’t give dimensions, so check your cupboard height if your shelves are tight. Thick, heavy glass gets tiring to lift when full, and that’s the honest trade-off with any mug this size.
Why we like it
- Largest glass mug in our everyday picks
- Heavy base is steady on a table
- Dishwasher safe, per the listing
- Also fits floats and soft drinks

Skip it if you mostly drink 12-ounce bottles, since you’ll have a lot of empty glass.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Generous capacity
- Sturdy build, per the listing
- Works for more than beer
Cons
- Heavy when full
- No dimensions or warranty
3. Chefcaptain Dimple Stein Beer Mugs, 20 oz, Set of 4 – Freezer-Friendly Dimples

This is the pub look: a barrel-shaped mug with a dimpled body and a wide handle. It’s 4.91 inches high with a top that’s 3 7/8 inches across, and Chefcaptain says the glass is lead free and the mug is dishwasher and freezer safe. It’s the only mug in our list that says outright it can go in the freezer.
Chefcaptain is careful about one detail that’s worth repeating. It says the 20 ounces is the liquid capacity, and that foam takes up room, so you won’t actually fit 20 ounces of beer with a head on it. That’s the honest way to read any mug capacity.
BestReviews, which doesn’t report using this specific mug, lists it as its budget choice among steins and mentions that some buyers received chipped mugs. Chefcaptain packs the mugs in a molded foam box, but it’s still worth checking them when they arrive. This is an Amazon-first brand and the lead-free statement comes from its own listing.
Why we like it
- Says it’s safe for both freezer and dishwasher
- Dimpled body gives a pub-style look
- Four in the box
- BestReviews lists it as a value choice

Why we recommend it
It suits someone who wants frosted mugs for summer and a classic pub shape without buying six.
Skip it if you want a maker with a longer track record, because the case rests on a thin Amazon-first listing.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Stated freezer safe
- Honest about foam
- Set of four
Cons
- Reports of chipped mugs on arrival
- Amazon-first brand

4. Bormioli Rocco Star Beer Mugs, 510 ml, Set of 6 – A Lean Italian Everyday Mug

Bormioli Rocco is an Italian glassmaker based in Fidenza, and the Star is a clean-lined mug at 510 ml. It stands 150 mm tall, 100 mm across, 135 mm with the handle, and the listing says each one is 820 grams, though it doesn’t clearly say whether that’s per mug or for the set.
The listing suggests it for homes as well as restaurants and hotels, and six come in the box. Bormioli says it can go through the dishwasher. It’s taller and narrower than a barrel-shaped mug, which suits lagers if you like to see the beer and the bubbles.
Our one concern is the seller. The lead offer was from Amazon Germany when we checked, so it’s worth looking at the shipping and return terms before you order. If they don’t suit you, the Stölzle is the closest alternative. The listing doesn’t state whether the glass is freezer safe or where it’s made.
Why we like it
- Slimmer shape than a barrel mug
- Exact dimensions are given
- Six mugs
- Dishwasher safe, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | 133640337 |
|---|---|
| Material | Glass |

| Count | 6 |

Why we recommend it
It suits a home that prefers a clean, modern mug to a dimpled pub look.
Skip it if the seller’s return terms don’t work for you, since it’s sold from Amazon’s German store.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Clean design
- Clear dimensions
- Established glassmaker
Cons
- Sold from overseas at the time of writing
- No statement on freezer use
5. Hofbräuhaus München Dimpled Glass Stein, 1 Liter – The Full Oktoberfest Mass

If you want the real Munich beer hall experience, this is the mug. It holds a full liter, carries the blue HB logo with “München” under it, and weighs just under three pounds empty, according to the listing, which also says it’s imported from Germany and made in Europe.
A stein this size is really for occasions. BestReviews chose the two-pack of this stein as the best in its roundup, calling it perfect for Oktoberfest and grill nights and noting it’s too big for most heavy beers. We’d agree with that view of its size: one liter is about three bottles, and it’s best for a light lager on a long afternoon.
You get one stein here, and the listing doesn’t state dishwasher or freezer safety, so wash it by hand. A two-pack listing exists, but it was running low on stock when we checked. Keep in mind that a full liter weighs roughly five pounds in the hand.
Why we like it
- Full one-liter capacity
- Real Hofbräuhaus branding
- Imported from Germany, per the listing
- BestReviews’ top stein in two-pack form
Key specifications
| Model | 5693 |

| Count | 1 |
| Size | Weighs just under 3 pounds empty |

| Freezer | Not stated |
| Made in | Europe, per listing |
Why we recommend it
It suits an Oktoberfest party or a gift for someone who’s been to Munich, more than it suits an everyday drink.
Skip it if you want something for weeknights, because it’s heavy and a liter warms up before you finish it.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Authentic look
- Very large capacity
- Sold singly
Cons
- Very heavy when full
- Care isn’t stated
- Only one in the box
6. Stanley Stay-Chill Beer Stein, 24 oz – Steel That Keeps Beer Cold

Glass and pools don’t mix, and that’s where this stein earns its place. Stanley makes it from 18/8 stainless steel with vacuum insulated double walls, and it claims it will keep drinks cold for up to 5 hours or chilled for 20. Hold those figures loosely for an opened beer, but the point stands: this keeps a beer colder for longer than a glass mug can.
It holds 24 ounces, so Stanley says two cans go in at once, and the big handle has plenty of room for a hand. It’s BPA-free and dishwasher safe, and Stanley says products bought from its resellers come with a lifetime warranty.
You give up the look of the beer. You can’t see the color or the head, and a steel rim feels different on the lip. It’s also sold singly, so you’d need to buy several to fill a table. Stanley’s listing also uses some colorful claims about bullets and hurricanes, which we’d ignore.
Why we like it
- Vacuum insulation keeps beer cold, per the maker
- It won’t shatter near a pool or grill
- Big handle
- Lifetime warranty through Stanley resellers
Key specifications

| Capacity | 24 oz |
| Count | 1 |
| Size | Not stated |
| Dishwasher | Yes, per maker |
| Freezer | Not needed |

Why we recommend it
It suits a patio, a pool or a camping trip, anywhere glass is a risk and beer warms fast.
Skip it if you care about seeing the beer you poured, since steel hides the color and head.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Won’t shatter
- Keeps beer cold for longer
- Lifetime warranty
Cons
- Beer isn’t visible
- One per box
7. Real Deal Steel Ultimate Stein, 20 oz – A Plain Steel Tankard

If the Stanley looks too outdoorsy, this is a quieter option. Real Deal Steel makes a 20-ounce stein in brushed 18/8 stainless, with no logo on the front. The maker says the handle is laser-welded to the body instead of glued or screwed, which is the part of a steel mug most likely to fail.
The inside has a double wall with vacuum insulation and a copper lining, and the maker says it keeps beer cold without sweating on the table. It also says the steel adds no metallic taste, but that’s a matter of opinion and we’d treat it as marketing. It’s described as BPA-free and shatterproof.
The lifetime warranty covers defects such as a failed weld or lost insulation and doesn’t cover drops, dents or normal wear, which is at least a clear statement. Real Deal Steel doesn’t state dishwasher care on this listing. It’s an Amazon-first brand, and the second one on our list.
Why we like it
- No logo, just brushed steel
- Laser-welded handle, per the maker
- Clear warranty terms
- Double-wall vacuum insulation

How to choose beer mugs for your table
Glass or steel
Glass lets you see the color and foam and doesn’t change how the rim feels. Steel keeps beer colder for longer and won’t break, which is why it belongs near a pool or grill. Most homes do fine with glass indoors and one or two steel mugs for outside.
Capacity and real capacity
A 12-ounce bottle fits a 16-ounce mug with a good head on it, and a 16-ounce can suits a 20-ounce mug. Chefcaptain points out that a mug’s rated ounces are liquid, and foam takes up some of that space. Bigger than 26 ounces is for occasions.
Frosting a mug
Only freeze a mug if the maker says you can. Chefcaptain does, but the other glass makers here don’t state it either way. Glass that’s taken from the freezer and filled with warm liquid can crack, so keep frosted mugs for cold beer. Some drinkers also find a frozen mug leaves ice crystals in the beer.
Handle and weight
Thick glass feels solid but adds up quickly, especially with a full liter in it. If anyone at your table has trouble with a heavy mug, go for a half liter. A wide handle should fit four fingers without your knuckles hitting the glass.
Set size and storage
Six mugs is a sensible number for a family that hosts, but they’re large and they don’t always stack. Measure a shelf before buying, particularly for tall mugs. For the beer itself, our beer growler guide helps if you take home draft.

How we narrowed down these seven mugs
We read Amazon listing data for mugs sold in home quantities, in stock and sold new, and avoided the exact mugs on our beer glasses page. We skipped restaurant case packs from Libbey and Anchor Hocking, and Libbey’s home listings were either nearly out of stock or had details that didn’t line up, so we left them out rather than guess. We didn’t use or pour from any of these.
For an outside view, we read BestReviews’ stein roundup, which names the Hofbräuhaus two-pack and the Chefcaptain mug. BestReviews describes its work in general terms and doesn’t report results from using these steins, so read it as one reference point. The other picks rest on makers’ and listing details. We looked up each brand in the CPSC recall database. Stanley’s matches include a 2024 recall of Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs, which isn’t this stein, and Libbey, which isn’t on our list, has some older glass recalls.
Beer mug questions, answered
What are the best heavy glass beer steins?
For sheer weight, the Hofbräuhaus one-liter stein is the heaviest here, at just under three pounds empty. For everyday use, the True 26-ounce mug has thick walls and a heavy base, and the Stölzle half-liter is the more practical size.
Can you put beer mugs in the freezer?
Only if the maker says so. Chefcaptain states its mugs are freezer safe. The others here don’t say either way, and insulated steel steins don’t need it, because they keep a chilled beer cold.
What size beer mug should I buy?
A half liter, about 17 ounces, is the easy everyday choice. Go for 20 to 26 ounces if you pour tall cans. A one-liter stein is for parties and special occasions.
Are glass beer mugs dishwasher safe?
Stölzle, True, Chefcaptain and Bormioli all say yes. The Hofbräuhaus listing doesn’t, so we’d wash that one by hand. A dishwasher’s rinse aid can leave a film that affects the foam, so give glasses a rinse in clean water if your head goes flat.
Are steel beer mugs worth it?
They are if you’re drinking outdoors or near a pool, where broken glass is a real problem, and they do keep beer cold for longer. Indoors, most people will prefer to see what they’re drinking.
What’s the difference between a beer mug and a stein?
In everyday use, not much. A traditional stein is a heavy mug, often with a lid, while a mug is simply a glass with a handle. Many listings use both words for the same dimpled glass.

Our final pick for the cupboard
For most homes, the Stölzle Lausitz Kaiser half-liter set is the one we’d buy, with a Stanley stein or two for the patio. If you’d like a glass with no handle at all, our beer glasses guide covers pints and tulips, and our beer book guide is a good next read. If you’re pouring for a backyard cookout, you can also try our beer can chicken stand guide.
