Zojirushi’s SM series looks like a single product sold in many colors. In fact the letters after SM mark real differences: lid, interior and whether a handle is fitted. The numbers mean size, with 36 for 12 ounces, 48 for 16, 60 for 20, 72 for 24 and 95 for 32.
This guide is for people who have already decided on a Zojirushi and want the right one. It says which model suits which buyer, and where a rival does better. To compare other brands, read our coffee go mug guide. If you came for hot drinks in a wider cup, our hot drink tumbler guide covers that.

Quick verdict: which Zojirushi travel mug to buy
Buy the 16-ounce SM-KHE if you want the model with the most independent evidence. Pick the 20-ounce SM-SHE for longer days, the GoCafe SM-VH48 for a wider opening and a stated PFAS-free interior, and the SM-QHE if you want a folding handle. Plan on washing any of them by hand unless your listing says otherwise.

Our picks for the best zojirushi travel mug
Seven models and sizes, one listing each, all sold by Amazon.com. Zojirushi mugs from other sellers exist; we did not use them. Colors are your own call.
1. Zojirushi Stainless Mug, 16 Ounce, SM-KHE – The One Reviewers Tested

This is the mug the Zojirushi reputation rests on. Reviewed names the SM-KHE48 its best overall travel mug, calls it the best it tried for 24-hour heat retention, and says coffee was “still steamy the next morning.” A 2021 TV report of Consumer Reports’ results says the 16-ounce Zojirushi kept liquids hot for 13 1/2 hours. It is trim enough for most cup holders and bags, per Reviewed.
There are two honest limits. Reviewed says it can’t go in the dishwasher, though the top comes apart for washing. And Reviewed’s own Thermos Stainless King entry says that mug beat the Zojirushi for heat, so it is not unbeaten.
The same model in another color is on our coffee go mug guide. We repeat it in Emerald because a guide to Zojirushi mugs without this one would leave out the model with most of the independent evidence. The listing’s part number field reads SM-KHE36AG and its model field SM-KHE48GC, while the title says 16 ounces. Check the capacity on the page before you buy.
Why we like it
- Reviewed’s best overall travel mug
- 13 1/2 hours hot in a TV report of Consumer Reports’ results
- Top comes apart for washing, per Reviewed
- Trim enough for cup holders, per Reviewed
Key specifications

|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Series | SM-KHE |
| Lid | Flip-open |
| Interior | 18/8 stainless, SlickSteel |
| Heat retention (listing) | Not stated on this listing |
| Size and weight (listing) | About 9.1 in tall, listing weight unclear |
| Dishwasher | No, per Reviewed |
Why we recommend it
It suits most commuters who want coffee still hot at lunchtime and do not mind washing it by hand.
Skip it if it must go in the dishwasher; Reviewed says it cannot.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Most independent evidence
- Slim
- Lid comes apart
Cons
- Hand wash only, per Reviewed
- Beaten for heat by one rival in Reviewed’s test
- Confusing part numbers on the listing
2. Zojirushi Stainless Mug, 12 Ounce, SM-KHE – The Compact One

The 12-ounce SM-KHE is the short version: about 7.4 inches tall and 0.44 pounds on the listing, with a flip-open lid and a safety lock. That suits a small bag or a short commute.
This listing says the interior has a nonstick coating, while the 16-ounce SM-KHE listings describe a SlickSteel stainless interior. If the coating matters to you, ask the seller or check the box before use. We read no test of this size. A smaller mug has less liquid to hold heat, so do not expect the 16-ounce result.
Why we like it
- Lightest SM-KHE here, per the listing
- Safety lock, per the listing
- Stopper comes apart for cleaning
- Accepts full-size ice cubes, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | SM-KHE36BA |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 12 oz |
| Series | SM-KHE |
| Lid | Flip-open with lock |
| Interior | Nonstick coated, per this listing |
| Heat retention (listing) | Not stated |
| Size and weight (listing) | 7.4 in, 0.44 lb |
| Dishwasher | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits small coffee drinkers and anyone with little room in a bag.
Skip it if you want a large coffee or a nonstick-free interior; choose the 16-ounce or a GoCafe.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Short and light
- Same lid family as the reviewed mug
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- No independent test of this size
- Listing wording on the interior conflicts with its sibling
- Small
3. Zojirushi Stainless Mug, 20 Ounce, SM-SHE – More Coffee, Same Slim Body

Andrew Palermo at Prudent Reviews tested a 20-ounce “Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug” with a lockable one-touch lid, and his results are the most striking we read. Starting at 190 degrees F outdoors, it read 155 degrees at 6 hours and 117 at 15, and he says it “led the field at every single hot interval.” He does not give the model number, so we cannot confirm it was this SM-SHE. The size and lid match.
He also found the drawbacks: the slowest flow of the mugs he tried, at 26 seconds for 16 ounces, a tall narrow shape that tips more easily, and a small gasket that takes patience to refit. The listing adds a 2-step lid release to stop condensation flinging off the stopper, an air vent on the mouthpiece, and a safety lock.
Why we like it
- Led Prudent Reviews’ hot test, in a 20-ounce Zojirushi
- Coldest reading at every interval in the same test
- 2-step lid release, per the listing
- Safety lock, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | SM-SHE60DV |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 20 oz |
| Series | SM-SHE |
| Lid | Flip-open with safety lock |
| Interior | SlickSteel |
| Heat retention (listing) | Not stated |
| Size and weight (listing) | 9.9 in, 0.62 lb |
| Dishwasher | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits long shifts and big coffee drinkers who sip through the morning.
Skip it if you like big gulps; Prudent found this Zojirushi the slowest pour of the mugs it tried.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Strong independent hot and cold results
- Lots of coffee in a slim mug
- One-touch lid, per Prudent Reviews
Cons
- Slow flow, per Prudent Reviews
- Tips more easily
- Gasket is fiddly to refit
4. Zojirushi GoCafe Mug, 16 Ounce, SM-VH48 – Wider Mouth, PFAS-Free Interior

GoCafe is the newer line. The listing’s main differences are a wider 1-7/8-inch opening and a polished stainless SlickSteel interior described as PFAS-free and BPA-free, with a leak-proof ReliaSeal design. It stands 7.9 inches tall and weighs about 0.56 pounds, so it is shorter and a little wider than the SM-KHE 16 ounce.
We read no independent test of the GoCafe, and the listing gives no heat figure, only hours. The listing’s PFAS wording is the maker’s description of the interior. A 20-ounce color of this mug is on our tumbler guide, so we use the other sizes here.
Why we like it
- 1-7/8 inch opening, per the listing
- PFAS-free interior, per the listing
- Leak-proof seal, per the listing
- Shorter body at 16 ounces
Key specifications
| Model | SM-VH48-XA |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Series | GoCafe SM-VH |
| Lid | Flip-lid |
| Interior | SlickSteel, PFAS-free per listing |
| Heat retention (listing) | Hours, no figure |
| Size and weight (listing) | 7.9 in, 0.56 lb |
| Dishwasher | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits people who fill at a coffee machine and want a wider target, or who prefer the interior described here.
Skip it if you want tested results; the SM-KHE is the proven one.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Easier to fill
- Clear interior wording
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- No independent test that we read
- No heat figure stated
- Dishwasher use not stated

5. Zojirushi GoCafe Mug, 24 Ounce, SM-VH72 – A Big Mug That Still Sips

At 24 ounces and 10.6 inches tall, this is the GoCafe for someone who would otherwise carry a thermos. It has the same flip-lid, the same 1-7/8-inch opening and the same SlickSteel wording as the 16-ounce. It weighs about 0.69 pounds on the listing.
Check your cup holder. The body is about 3 inches across at the widest, and at this height it sits high, so it will be less steady than a shorter mug. We read no test of this size.
Why we like it
- Sips like a mug and holds a lot
- Light for its size, per the listing
- Wide opening, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | SM-VH72-XA |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 24 oz |
| Series | GoCafe SM-VH |
| Lid | Flip-lid |
| Interior | SlickSteel, PFAS-free per listing |
| Heat retention (listing) | Hours, no figure |
| Size and weight (listing) | 10.6 in, 0.69 lb |
| Dishwasher | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits long drives and full days at a desk with no coffee maker nearby.
Skip it if your car’s cup holder is shallow; a mug this tall may wobble.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Long day’s capacity
- One-lid simplicity
- Sold by Amazon.com
Cons
- Tall
- No independent test that we read
- No stated heat figure
6. Zojirushi GoCafe Mug, 32 Ounce, SM-VH95 – Nearly a Thermos

This is the largest mug we found from Zojirushi, 32 ounces and 11.5 inches tall, at about 0.73 pounds on the listing. That is a light empty weight for a bottle this size, and it can stand in for a small thermos for someone drinking directly from it.
The trouble is its use as a travel mug. Few people want 32 ounces of hot coffee, and cold water is a better fit for this one, which the listing also allows. It is too tall for easy sipping in a car, in our judgment. We read no independent test. If you truly want to pour for two, compare the stainless thermos guide.
Why we like it
- Biggest capacity here
- Light on the listing for 32 ounces
- Works for cold as well as hot, per the listing
Key specifications
| Model | SM-VH95-XA |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 32 oz |
| Series | GoCafe SM-VH |
| Lid | Flip-lid |
| Interior | SlickSteel, PFAS-free per listing |
| Heat retention (listing) | Hours, no figure |
| Size and weight (listing) | 11.5 in, 0.73 lb |
| Dishwasher | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits all-day water drinkers and very large coffee habits.
Skip it if you commute by car; a mug this tall is awkward to drink from while seated.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Very large
- Light for its size
- Same seal as the smaller GoCafe
Cons
- Awkward in a car
- Hot coffee loses appeal over a large fill
- No independent test that we read
7. Zojirushi Flip-and-Go Mug, 16 Ounce, SM-QHE – A Handle That Folds Away

Zojirushi’s one distinctive idea on this list is a handle. On the SM-QHE, it folds down for a comfortable hold and flips up to carry, and the listing says the one-touch lid is easy to work with one hand, even wearing gloves. It weighs about 0.63 pounds and stands 8.6 inches tall.
This listing gives the clearest figures of the group: 189 degrees F at 1 hour and 160 at 6 hours, with 46 degrees F cold at 6 hours. Those are the maker’s numbers, not an independent test. It also repeats the 2-step lid release and a stopper that comes apart for cleaning. A 20-ounce version is sold as well.
Why we like it
- Fold-down carry handle, per the listing
- Stated 189 degrees F at 1 hour and 160 at 6 hours
- Works with gloves, per the listing
- 1-5/8 inch opening takes full-size ice
Key specifications
| Model | SM-QHE48AK |
|---|---|
| Capacity | 16 oz |
| Series | SM-QHE |
| Lid | One-touch flip |
| Interior | SlickSteel |
| Heat retention (listing) | 189 F at 1 hr, 160 F at 6 hr |
| Size and weight (listing) | 8.6 in, 0.63 lb |
| Dishwasher | Not stated |
Why we recommend it
It suits people carrying a bag, keys and a mug from the car to the office, and anyone who wears gloves in winter.
Skip it if you want the lightest mug; the handle adds a little weight compared with the SM-SHE 16 ounce on its listing.
Pros and cons
Pros
- Handle is rare among slim mugs
- Clear heat figures
- One-hand lid, per the listing
Cons
- Maker figures only
- A handle is one more thing to wash around
- Dishwasher use not stated
Where Zojirushi falls short, and who to look at instead
- Cleaning takes attention. Reviewed says the SM-KHE48 can’t go in the dishwasher, and Palermo finds that a small gasket takes patience to refit. Take the stopper apart and wash it after each use, because milk left in a lid is what makes a mug smell.
- Slow pour. Palermo’s 20-ounce Zojirushi had the slowest flow of his group. That is part of how a tight lid works, and some people will mind it.
- Heat is strong, but rivals can match it. Reviewed says the Thermos Stainless King beat its Zojirushi for heat. Prudent’s results put a Zojirushi first and Contigo second overall for insulation, so a Contigo is the first alternative to look at.
- Not a thermos. Julia Bobak at Homegrounds says Zojirushi and Contigo mugs suit one-handed commuting better than a Stanley bottle, but keep drinks less hot than the Stanley in her comparison. If you want coffee to last all day, read the stainless thermos guide.
- Few independent tests of new models. We read none of the GoCafe. Reports of the older mugs do not automatically apply.

How to choose a Zojirushi travel mug
1. Start with size, in the code
Size is in the model number: 36, 48, 60, 72 and 95. A 16-ounce suits most single drinks, and a 20 buys you a refill’s worth for the morning. Beyond that, look at height, because a tall slim mug is less stable.
2. Read the interior line on your exact listing
Some mugs describe a SlickSteel stainless interior, others a nonstick coating, and the GoCafe describes a PFAS-free polished interior. Listings for similar mugs can differ, as our SM-KHE picks show. If this matters to you, confirm it on the model you are actually buying.

3. Think about how you open it
Most of these open with a one-touch flip-lid and have a lock. The SM-QHE is described as working with gloves on. Use the lock, because a flip-lid in a bag is only as safe as the latch.
4. Preheat for the best result
A minute of hot water from the kettle warms the steel so your coffee does not have to. Any insulated mug benefits from this. It costs nothing and it is what a kitchen does with any container meant to hold heat.
How we picked these seven Zojirushi mugs
We pulled Zojirushi listings from the Amazon API on November 3, 2026, kept those new, in plain stock and sold by Amazon.com, and took one listing per size and model. Several series, such as the SM-SA and SM-TA, came up only from third-party sellers, so we left them out. One listing repeats a model on another of our guides in another color, and it states why. We read Reviewed’s travel mug guide (dated March 2024), Prudent Reviews’ comparison (February 2026), the 2021 TV report of Consumer Reports’ results and the Homegrounds comparison of a Stanley with these mugs. Zojirushi’s own product pages did not open for us, so nothing here comes from them. We did not test anything ourselves.
Zojirushi travel mug questions, answered
What is the Zojirushi SM series?
SM is the mug line, the letters mark the version and the number marks the size. In the listings we read, SM-KHE, SM-SHE, SM-QHE and SM-VH GoCafe are distinct versions, differing in lid, handle and interior.
Are Zojirushi travel mugs dishwasher safe?
Reviewed says the SM-KHE48 is not. The other listings here do not say either way, so wash by hand unless your manual says otherwise.
How long does a Zojirushi keep coffee hot?
The SM-QHE listing states 160 degrees F at 6 hours. Palermo measured 155 at 6 hours outdoors in a 20-ounce Zojirushi, and 152 at 15 hours indoors. A TV report of Consumer Reports’ results says the 16-ounce stayed hot for 13 1/2 hours.
Do Zojirushi mugs leak?
Listings call the lids leak-proof or lockable, as the GoCafe’s ReliaSeal shows. Reviewed’s entry does not discuss leaks. Lock the lid before it goes in a bag.
Has Zojirushi been recalled?
The CPSC recall database we searched on November 3, 2026 returned no recall under the name Zojirushi. That is not a guarantee, so check cpsc.gov for your own product.
Our final pick from the Zojirushi range
Start with the 16-ounce SM-KHE and keep a small brush beside the sink. For a bigger day, the 20-ounce SM-SHE is the one to pick. And when coffee alone will not cover lunch, call to order from Julia’s at (346) 546-8283.
