Match Your Machine First: The Best Bottomless Portafilter

Seven picks for the best bottomless portafilter, sorted by machine and size, with what a naked portafilter shows and what it will not fix.

A portafilter holding ground coffee, seen close up on a dark green counter
A portafilter filled with ground coffee.

A bottomless portafilter, also sold as a naked portafilter, is a portafilter with the spouts and the underside cut away. You can see the bottom of the basket while the shot runs, which means you can see where the coffee comes through first and whether it comes through evenly.

The hard part of buying one is not choosing a handle. It is finding one that locks into your machine. This guide sorts seven picks by machine and size, gives the fit each listing states, and says plainly what these parts will not do. We have not pulled shots with them, so we go by the listings and by what an espresso retailer publishes.

Quick verdict: which bottomless portafilter to buy

If you own a 54mm Breville, buy the Breville Naked Portafilter 54mm, since it names the machines it fits and comes from the machine’s maker. On an E61-style machine, go with the Normcore 58mm for E61. On a Gaggia Classic, choose the KNODOS 58mm. Your machine decides the pick, so check the model number first.

None of these will turn a poor shot into a good one by itself. They show you what is happening so you can fix the grind, the dose or the puck.

Our picks for the best bottomless portafilter

They run in the order we would consider them, but only the ones listed for your machine are real options. A 58mm part will not go into a 54mm group, and matching the diameter alone is not enough.

1. Breville Naked Portafilter, 54mm, Walnut – Named for Breville 54mm Machines

Best overallBreville BEA204WLW Naked Portafilter Espresso Accessory

For anyone on a 54mm Breville, this is the simple choice. It comes from the machine’s own maker, and the listing is unusually exact about fit: Bambino BES450, Bambino Plus BES500, Barista Express BES870, Barista Express Impress BES876, Barista Pro BES878, Barista Touch BES880 and Barista Touch Impress BES881. Breville adds a plain warning to check your model before buying.

The handle is walnut with a thumb stop, and Breville sells it as part of its Craft Collection alongside a tamper and distribution tool in the same sizes. Its stated purpose is to let you visually diagnose and troubleshoot your extraction.

The listing does not say whether a basket is included, and that matters. If none comes in the box, you will use a basket you already own, so confirm that yours is a non-pressurized one before you expect a useful view of the flow.

Why we like it

  • Comes from the maker of the machine
  • Seven machines named by model number
  • Walnut handle with a thumb stop
  • Size matches the rest of the Breville 54mm range

Why we recommend it

It suits owners of the listed Breville machines who want the lowest risk on fit and do not mind that the listing says little about materials.

2. Normcore 58mm Bottomless Portafilter for E61, Black – Wide Fit for E61 Groups

Best for E61 machinesNormcore 58mm Bottomless Portafilter

Normcore is a coffee tool maker and this is its 58mm portafilter for E61-style groups. The listing names E61, Flair 58, ECM, Rocket, Sanremo, Synesso, Slayer and VBM, and the title says an 18g basket comes with it, which saves a second purchase.

The build is stated as stainless steel and anodized aluminum, with a lightweight, smooth-textured handle. Normcore also points out that with no bottom plate you are not limited to one basket size, so you can try single, double or triple baskets as long as they fit the group.

That broad list is useful but deserves a second look. Normcore sells separate 58mm parts for Gaggia and Breville machines, which tells you 58mm is not one universal fit. If your machine is not an E61 type or named above, this is not your part.

Why we like it

  • Names eight machine brands and group types
  • 18g basket included
  • Stainless steel and anodized aluminum
  • Open bottom accepts other baskets that fit

Why we recommend it

It suits a home barista with an E61-type or Flair 58 machine who wants one part with a basket already in the box.

3. KNODOS 58mm Bottomless Portafilter for Gaggia, Walnut – Listed for the Gaggia Classic

Best for Gaggia ClassicKNODOS 58mm Bottomless Portafilter for Gaggia Classic Pro

The Gaggia Classic is a common machine for people who want to learn espresso, and a bottomless portafilter is a common first upgrade for it. KNODOS lists this one for the Classic, Classic Pro, E24, GT and Evo, in a package with a stainless steel head, a walnut handle and an 18 to 21 gram basket.

The listing also says it takes 58mm baskets from other brands, naming IMS and VST, which helps if you later want a precision basket. A larger basket has room for a bigger dose, but you may need to adjust your grind to suit it.

KNODOS is one of the two Amazon-first brands on this page and the current offer comes from a third-party seller, so buy with the return window in mind and test the fit promptly.

Why we like it

  • Five Gaggia models named
  • Stainless steel head and walnut handle
  • 18 to 21 gram basket included
  • IMS and VST baskets named as compatible

Why we recommend it

It suits Gaggia Classic owners who want a wood handle and a larger basket without shopping for parts separately.

4. Normcore 51mm Bottomless Portafilter for De’Longhi, 2 Ears – For Small De’Longhi Machines

Best for 2-ear De’LonghiNormcore 51mm Naked Bottomless Portafilter 2 Ears Fits Delonghi ECP3420/EC155/BCO430/EC260 with Anodized Aluminum Handle (Basket Included) - Included Portafilter Filter Basket

Most naked portafilters are made for 54mm and 58mm machines, so 51mm owners have fewer choices. This Normcore has two ears and is listed for the De’Longhi ECP3420, EC155, BCO430 and EC260. The title says a basket is included.

The handle is anodized aluminum, described as lathed by hand and shaped for a comfortable fit. It is a light, plain part for a small machine.

Check two things first: the number of ears on your current portafilter, and the model number on your machine. De’Longhi uses more than one 51mm design, and Normcore sells a separate three-ear version for the La Specialista. Compact pump machines often ship with pressurized baskets, so expect a learning curve on the grind if you move to a non-pressurized one.

Why we like it

  • Listed by De’Longhi model number
  • Two-ear design stated
  • Basket included
  • Anodized aluminum handle

Key specifications

Why we recommend it

It suits owners of the listed De’Longhi machines who want to see their shots without replacing the machine.

Skip it if your De’Longhi has three ears or is a Dedica or La Specialista. This two-ear part is listed only for the four models above.

Pros and cons

  • Rare fit for small machines

5. NEOUZA 51mm Bottomless Portafilter for CASABREWS, 3 Ears – Fit for Three-Ear 51mm Machines

Best for CASABREWSNEOUZA 51mm Bottomless Portafilter 3 Ears for CASABREWS HiBREW

Many budget home machines use a three-ear 51mm group, and big-name accessory makers rarely name them. NEOUZA lists this part for the CASABREWS CM5418, 3700 Essential and 3700 Pro, the HiBREW H10B, H11, H8A and H5, the Mr. Coffee Cafe Barista, the Donlim KF-6001, the De’Longhi EM450 and Gevi machines. It warns that it does not fit other De’Longhi machines.

The basket is an 18g double, and it is non-pressurized. NEOUZA says that sputtering points to puck preparation, not a defect, which is an honest thing to say on a listing. The body, basket and head are stated as 304 stainless steel with a solid wood handle.

The listing claims SGS food-contact certification for the metal parts. We could not check that claim against a report, so treat it as the seller’s statement. NEOUZA is the other Amazon-first brand on this page.

Why we like it

  • Names budget machines others skip
  • Non-pressurized 18g basket included
  • 304 stainless steel, as stated
  • Warns where it does not fit

Key specifications

Model Donlim Portafilter
Size 51mm

Ears 3
Basket 18g double, non-pressurized, included
Handle Solid wood
Head and body 304 stainless steel
Care Not stated

Why we recommend it

It suits owners of a listed entry-level machine who want to learn from their shots and have a grinder that can go fine enough.

Skip it if you use pre-ground coffee or a grinder that cannot grind finely. A non-pressurized basket will run fast and thin, and this part will only show you that more clearly.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Serves machines with few options
  • Basket included
  • Clear note on what does not fit

Cons

  • Amazon-first brand
  • Certification claim is the seller’s
  • Needs a capable grinder

6. MHW-3BOMBER 54mm Bottomless Portafilter, Wood Handle – A Second Choice for 54mm Breville

Best alternative for BrevilleMHW-3BOMBER 54mm Bottomless Portafilter Fits Breville Barista Express

MHW-3BOMBER is a coffee tool maker whose products turn up across this site’s espresso guides. This three-ear part is listed for the Barista Express, Barista Pro, BES870XL, BES878, BES880, BES840XL and Solis 1170. It says it is not for the Bambino, where the fit is a little tight. That is a useful warning, and a real difference from Breville’s own part.

It comes with a stainless basket that has 648 holes of 0.3mm, with a recommended dose of 15g. The handle is natural wood with an electroplated finish on a SUS304 steel body, and the whole part weighs about 350g. The listing tells you to avoid the dishwasher.

Choose it over the Breville if you want a stated basket and stated materials. Its reminder is worth repeating too: channeling and spurting are common and point to your preparation, not to a faulty portafilter.

Why we like it

  • Basket details are stated
  • SUS304 steel body
  • Honest note about the Bambino
  • Weight stated at about 350g

Key specifications

Model BP7118B
Size 54mm
Fits, per the listing Barista Express, Barista Pro, BES870XL, BES878, BES880, BES840XL, Solis 1170; not Bambino
Ears 3
Basket 54mm, 648 holes, about 15g dose, included
Handle Natural wood
Head and body SUS304 steel, electroplated
Care No dishwasher

Why we recommend it

It suits Barista Express and Pro owners who want more detail on what they are buying than Breville’s listing gives.

Skip it if you own a Bambino or Bambino Plus. The listing warns against the Bambino, and Breville’s own part is listed for both.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Basket included and described
  • Materials stated
  • Care stated

Cons

  • Not for the Bambino
  • 15g dose is modest for some doubles
  • Hand wash only

7. Breville Naked Portafilter, 58mm, Walnut – For the Dual Boiler and Oracle

Best for Breville 58mmBreville BEA304WLW Naked Portafilter Espresso Accessory

Breville’s larger machines use a 58mm group, and this is the matching part. The listing limits it to the Dual Boiler BES920, Oracle BES980, Oracle Touch BES990, Oracle Jet BES985 and Oracle Dual Boiler BES995. Like its 54mm sibling, it has a walnut handle with a thumb stop.

Do not assume a 58mm part made for a Gaggia or an E61 machine will lock into these Breville models. The size is the same, but the locking tabs are what decide the fit. Normcore, for one, sells a separate 58mm version for the Dual Boiler for this reason.

As with the 54mm model, the listing does not state whether a basket is included or what the head is made of, so plan to use your existing basket if it fits and is non-pressurized.

Why we like it

  • Five machines named by model number
  • Comes from the machine’s maker
  • Walnut handle with a thumb stop
  • Pairs with Breville’s other 58mm tools

Key specifications

Fits, per the listing BES920, BES980, BES990, BES985, BES995

Why we recommend it

It suits owners of the listed 58mm Breville machines who want a part with no doubt about the fit.

Skip it if your machine is a 54mm Breville or any other brand. It is listed only for those five models.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Clear fit list
  • Own-brand part
  • Thumb stop for grip

Cons

  • Basket not stated
  • Head material not stated
  • Narrow use

How to choose a naked portafilter that fits

Start with your model number

Look on the machine’s base or in its manual, then find that number on the listing. Seattle Coffee Gear warns that basket diameter alone does not guarantee a fit, because fit also depends on the position, thickness and shape of the locking tabs. That is why every pick here has a machine list.

Count the ears

Look at the portafilter you already have. It will have two or three locking ears, and a part with the wrong count will not lock. This matters most at 51mm, where two-ear and three-ear designs both exist.

Check the basket

See whether a basket comes with the part and whether it suits your usual dose. Seattle Coffee Gear gives the same advice, and adds that if you reuse a basket you should verify that it fits securely. Pressurized baskets are made to build pressure themselves, so they tell you far less about your puck.

Be sure your grinder can keep up

A non-pressurized basket depends on the grind. If your grinder cannot go fine and even, the shot will run fast whatever portafilter you use. If that sounds like your setup, a better burr espresso grinder will do more for your cup than this part.

Expect some mess

Seattle Coffee Gear says spraying can create more cleanup while you dial in your grind and preparation. Keep a cloth nearby and wipe the drip tray often for the first few weeks. Sputtering is information, not a defect.

Handle and clearance

Wood and aluminum handles are mostly a matter of feel. Clearance matters more. With no spouts you can usually fit a taller glass under the basket, and you can set a scale on the tray, but only one cup at a time, because there is nothing to split a double.

How we picked these seven portafilters

We did not use these parts ourselves. We started with Seattle Coffee Gear’s guide to bottomless portafilters, which we read in full, for what they show and how they fit. It is a retailer page, so we took its advice on fit and cleanup and not any product preference. Most other roundups our search found came from retailers or affiliate sites, and none of them gave controlled comparisons, so no pick rests on one.

From there, every pick had to be plainly in stock with a new offer, state its size, and name the machines it fits. We left out listings that only said ‘universal’, and we kept to two Amazon-first brands. The rest of each write-up rests on the listing and the maker’s details. Clive Coffee has a guide on this subject too, but we could not open it, so we do not quote it.

Bottomless portafilter questions, answered

Does a bottomless portafilter make better espresso?

Not on its own. Seattle Coffee Gear says it does not automatically improve flavor. It gives you visual feedback to use alongside taste, shot time and beverage weight, and the improvement comes from what you change once you can see the flow.

What is channeling and how would I see it?

Channeling is when water finds an easy path through the puck and skips the rest. Through an open basket, you would watch where the coffee emerges and how the flow develops, and a side that runs early or a spray of thin jets are the usual signs. Better distribution, tamping and grind are the usual fixes.

Will any 58mm portafilter fit my machine?

No. E61, Gaggia and Breville 58mm machines each have their own parts here, even though the diameter is the same. Check the listing for your model.

Can I pull two cups at once?

No. With no spouts there is nothing to divide the stream, so a double goes into one cup or a shared pitcher. Keep your spouted portafilter for days you are making two drinks.

Do I need a puck screen or a special tamper?

No, though both can help you get a tidy puck. We cover those in our guides to the best espresso puck screen and the best espresso tamper. Match the tamper to your basket size.

Is it easier to clean?

Partly. Seattle Coffee Gear notes that removing the spouted base makes the underside of the basket easier to reach. Follow each listing’s care advice, since the MHW-3BOMBER says to keep it out of the dishwasher and most of the others do not say.

The right part for your machine

If you have a 54mm Breville, the Breville Naked Portafilter is the one we would buy. On other machines, the right pick is whichever listing names your model. If you are still shopping for the machine itself, start with our guide to the best espresso machine, and when you are done pulling shots, a knock box keeps the pucks off your counter.
