Size First: How to Choose the Best Espresso Puck Screen

The best espresso puck screen by basket size and thickness: Normcore, MHW-3BOMBER, IKAPE, Crema and IMS, plus what's really known about whether they help.

An espresso machine portafilter filled with coffee grounds
A portafilter filled with coffee grounds.

A puck screen is a thin metal disc that sits on top of your tamped coffee, between the puck and the machine’s shower screen. Makers say it spreads water more evenly and cuts channeling. What it reliably does is keep coffee off the group head.

That second part is the honest reason to buy one. Coffee Chronicler, one of the few independent writers to discuss them in detail, calls the barrier effect probably the most significant reason he uses a screen, says the channeling benefit is more theory than measurement, and notes he doesn’t see much real-world difference between types. So buy for a cleaner machine, match your basket size, and treat better shots as a possible extra.

Quick verdict: which puck screen to buy

For a 58mm portafilter, buy the Normcore 58.5mm Puck Screen, a 316 stainless mesh disc with a one-year warranty. For Breville’s 54mm baskets, the Crema 53.4mm names the fit by machine. If your basket is already nearly full, choose the Normcore Ultra-Slim 53.3mm at 0.2 mm thick. For 51mm De’Longhi-size baskets, the MHW-3BOMBER 51mm is the one here.

Our picks for the best espresso puck screen

1. Normcore 58.5mm Puck Screen – A Thick Mesh Disc for 58mm Baskets

Best overallNormcore 58.5mm Puck Screen - Lower Shower Screen - Metal Coffee Reusable Filter for Espresso Portafilter Filter Basket 58mm - 1.7mm Thickness 150μm - 316 Stainless Steel

Normcore makes a wide range of espresso accessories and is a name we also rank highly on our tamper page. This disc is 1.7 mm thick and built from layers of 150-micron mesh in 316 stainless steel, sized at 58.5mm for most 58mm baskets.

At that thickness, it takes up space in the basket, so you may need a slightly smaller dose or a coarser grind. Normcore says to rinse it after use and to clean it with Cafiza or a blast from the steam wand if it stains. It comes with a one-year warranty, the listing says.

Why we like it

  • 316 stainless steel, per the listing.
  • One-year manufacturer warranty.
  • Normcore names steam-wand and Cafiza cleaning.
  • Sold by Normcore’s own store.

Key specifications

Model 58.5mm
Diameter 58.5mm
Thickness 1.7 mm
Mesh or holes 150-micron mesh, five layers
Steel 316 stainless
Stated fit 58mm portafilter baskets
Cleaning Rinse; Cafiza or steam if stained
Warranty 1 year

Why we recommend it

This is a solid default for E61, Gaggia and similar 58mm machines when you have headroom in the basket.

Skip it if your basket is already close to the shower screen. Choose a thin one instead.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Stated warranty
  • Thick enough to handle easily
  • Clear cleaning advice

Cons

  • Uses up headspace
  • Mesh can trap fines
  • Benefit to the shot isn’t proven

2. Crema 53.4mm Puck Screen for Breville – Sized by Breville Model

Best for BrevilleCREMA 53.4mm Puck Screen for Breville Barista

Crema Coffee Products, a family-owned brand by its own description, makes this one specifically for Breville’s 54mm baskets. It names the Barista Express, Express Impress, Pro, Touch and Touch Impress, which saves you working out the fit from the diameter.

It’s 1.7 mm of 316L stainless with a 150-micron mesh, and the listing says it rinses clean under the tap. Note that the screen lowers headspace, and a Breville with a razor-leveled dose may need a small adjustment.

Why we like it

  • Names specific Breville models.
  • 316L stainless with 150-micron mesh.
  • Sold directly by Crema.

Key specifications

Model Not stated
Diameter 53.4mm
Thickness 1.7 mm

Why we recommend it

Made for Breville owners who just want the right size without reading any charts.

Skip it if your machine has a 58mm or 51mm basket. Crema sells a 58.5mm version, but this one won’t fit.

Pros and cons

  • Machine-named fit
  • Thick and easy to handle
  • Maker answers fit questions, it says

3. Normcore Ultra-Slim 53.3mm Puck Screen – Only 0.2 mm for Tight Baskets

Best for tight headspaceNormcore 53.3mm Ultra-Slim 0.2 mm Puck Screen - Lower Shower Screen - Metal Coffee Reusable Filter for 54mm Portafilter - 200-micron Laser etched - 316 Stainless Steel with Titanium PVD Coating

This Normcore disc is a very different item from the pick above. It’s a single 0.2 mm layer of laser-etched 316 stainless with a titanium PVD coating and 200-micron holes, at 53.3mm for 54mm baskets. It’s so thin that dose and grind should need little change.

Normcore says it suits naked portafilters, and it’s easy to rinse. Coffee Chronicler says it’s still an open question whether thin discs disperse water as well as mesh, but he rates thin steel discs highly for value and says he hasn’t seen much real-world difference.

Why we like it

  • Takes almost no headspace at 0.2 mm.
  • Titanium PVD coating, per the listing.
  • Easier to keep clean than thick mesh, we’d expect.

Key specifications

Model 53.3mm
Diameter 53.3mm
Thickness 0.2 mm
Mesh or holes 200-micron laser-etched holes
Steel 316 stainless, titanium PVD
Stated fit 54mm portafilters
Cleaning Rinse after use

Why we recommend it

Good for anyone whose basket is already full, or who doesn’t want to change their recipe.

Skip it if you want something you can easily pick up. A thin disc is fiddlier to lift out.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Almost no effect on dose
  • Simple to rinse
  • Coated surface

Cons

  • Fiddly to handle
  • Warranty not stated
  • Thin discs bend more easily

4. MHW-3BOMBER 51mm Puck Screen – A Thin Disc for 51mm Baskets

Best for 51mmMHW-3BOMBER 51mm Puck Screen Metal Espresso Puck Screen Reusable Coffee Filter for 51mm Portafilter Basket 0.8mm Thickness FG5580S-OS

51mm is the size people most often have trouble finding, and it’s common on De’Longhi machines. This MHW-3BOMBER screen is 0.8 mm thick with two layers of 304 stainless, with a filtration precision of 0.18 mm according to the listing.

The maker warns against using it if your brew head has internal screws in the way and says not to use a dishwasher. Coffee Chronicler mentions MHW-3BOMBER’s discs and finds little practical difference from the thin steel type, which is a fair summary of the whole category.

Why we like it

  • Sized for 51mm baskets.
  • Two-layer 304 stainless steel.
  • Thin at 0.8 mm, so less headspace taken.

Key specifications

Model FG5580S
Diameter 51mm
Thickness 0.8 mm
Mesh or holes Double layer, 0.18 mm filtration
Steel 304 stainless
Stated fit 51mm portafilter baskets
Cleaning Clean after each use; no dishwasher
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

For smaller-basket machines, where choice is narrower and a thick disc would eat too much space.

Skip it if your group head has an exposed screw. The maker says this design isn’t recommended there.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Hard-to-find size
  • Thin enough for small baskets
  • Named espresso brand

Cons

  • No dishwasher
  • Warranty not stated
  • Check for a center screw

5. MHW-3BOMBER 58.5mm Round-Hole Puck Screen – Clears a Center Screw

Best for center screwsMHW-3BOMBER 58.5mm Espresso Puck Screen with Round Hole Metal Espresso Filter 0.8mm Thickness Coffee Filter for La Marzocco/Gaggia FG5586

Some machines, including La Marzocco and Gaggia groups, have a screw that sticks out from the middle of the shower screen. A flat disc can hit it. This one has a hole in the center to clear that screw.

It’s otherwise a 0.8 mm double-layer screen at 58.5mm, and thin enough that the maker says you shouldn’t have to cut your dose. If your machine has a screw, it’s a problem this design addresses directly.

Why we like it

  • Center hole for exposed screws.
  • Named for La Marzocco and Gaggia.
  • Thin at 0.8 mm.

Key specifications

Model FG5586
Diameter 58.5mm
Thickness 0.8 mm
Mesh or holes Double layer with center hole
Steel Not stated
Stated fit La Marzocco, Gaggia groups
Cleaning Clean after each use
Warranty Not stated

Why we recommend it

This is a specific fix for a specific problem. Look at your shower screen first; if there’s a screw head, this is your disc.

Skip it if your shower screen is flush. A solid disc covers the whole puck.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Solves a real fit problem
  • Names the machines
  • Sold by a coffee retailer

Cons

  • Hole leaves the center uncovered
  • Steel grade not stated here
  • Narrow use

6. IKAPE 58mm Espresso Puck Screen – An Ultra-Light 316 Stainless Disc

Light and thinIKAPE 58mm Espresso Puck Screen

IKAPE is a coffee-gear brand with a broad accessory line, and Coffee Chronicler rates its steel disc screens highly for value. This is a food-grade 316 stainless disc in a 58mm size, described as ultra-thin and ultra-light, and the maker says to clean it under hot water or with mild detergent.

The listing doesn’t give an exact thickness. IKAPE says it prevents channeling and makes shots smoother; treat those as the maker’s claims, since we found no measurements behind them. A 53mm version is sold on its own listing.

Why we like it

  • 316 stainless steel, per the listing.
  • Named by Coffee Chronicler for value.
  • Easy to clean under hot water.

Key specifications

Model Not stated
Diameter 58mm
Thickness Not stated; described as ultra-thin

A low-fuss thin disc for 58mm machines, when you prefer not to change your dose.

Skip it if you want every spec spelled out. The listing doesn’t give thickness or hole size.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Thin and light
  • Independent mention of the brand
  • Simple care

Cons

  • Thickness not stated
  • Taste claims are the maker’s own
  • Fiddly to lift out, as thin discs are

7. IMS Puck Diffuser Screen by E&B – From a Filter Basket Specialist

Filter specialistIMS Puck Diffuser Screen by E&B

IMS is an Italian maker of precision filter baskets and shower screens, and this 58mm diffuser is designed for IMS’s All-In-One baskets, though the seller says it fits all 58mm group head baskets. It has 257 holes with an AISI 301 etched membrane and a 150-micron filtering rating.

A magnetic pin is included to help lift the hot screen out of the basket, which is a nice touch. The listing says to rinse it and wipe it with a non-abrasive cloth, with no chemicals needed.

Why we like it

  • Maker specializes in filter parts.
  • Magnetic pin included for lifting.
  • Stated 257 holes, 150-micron membrane.

8. PuckBuddy 53.35mm Magnetic Puck Screen Kit – Screens You Lift Off With a Magnet

Easiest to removePuckBuddy 53.35mm Magnetic Puck Screen Kit - 2 Pack 0.9mm Thin Espresso Screens with Double Sided Magnet Tool - 304 Stainless Steel Resuable Metal Coffee Filter for 54mm Portafilter (53.35mm)

The awkward part of any puck screen is getting a hot, wet disc out of the basket or out of the knock box. PuckBuddy’s kit has two 0.9 mm screens in magnetic 304 stainless, with a double-sided magnet that sticks to your machine. Tap the screen on the magnet and it stays put.

PuckBuddy is a small brand, and we found nothing independent about it. The listing also says that 304 is more magnetic than 316, which is why these use it. The screens come with motivational designs, which you may or may not want.

Why we like it

  • Two screens with a magnet in the kit.
  • Magnet attaches to the machine or nearby metal.
  • Thin at 0.9 mm.

Key specifications

Fits anyone tired of fishing screens out of a knock box, especially on a Breville-size basket.

Skip it if you don’t want printed designs on your gear, or you want a longer-established brand.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Solves the removal problem
  • Comes with two screens
  • Thin

Cons

  • Small brand
  • Printed designs

How to choose a puck screen

Measure your basket

Size is the one mistake you can’t fix. Screens are sold at 51mm, about 53.3 to 53.5mm for 54mm baskets, and about 58 to 58.5mm for 58mm baskets. They should sit flat inside the basket. If in doubt, check the inside width at the top of your basket.

Thickness and headspace

A 1.7 mm screen takes up real room above the coffee, and you may need to lower your dose. 0.8 mm is a compromise, and 0.2 mm barely matters. If the puck presses against the group head when you lock in, go thinner or dose less.

Mesh or etched disc

Sintered mesh looks more like a shower screen and holds more fines. Etched discs are easier to rinse. Coffee Chronicler says the jury is still out on whether thin discs spread water as well as mesh.

Check for a center screw

Pull the portafilter and look up. If a screw head stands proud, use a round-hole screen, or the maker’s warning about internal screws applies.

Cleaning and steel

316 is the more corrosion-resistant grade and 304 is more magnetic. Rinse after every shot. Normcore suggests Cafiza for stains, while IMS says chemicals aren’t needed. A screen doesn’t replace cleaning the group head; our cleaner guide covers that.

How we picked these puck screens

We searched Amazon by basket size and by maker, then kept in-stock screens with a new lead offer from names we could identify, and from a size or design the others didn’t cover. Two picks from one maker had to be different products, not just different sizes. Cheap multi-packs from unknown sellers were left out, and there were a lot of them. We count one brand, PuckBuddy, as thin.

We have not used these screens. We read Coffee Chronicler’s article on puck screens directly, and it has opinions but no measurements. A forum thread that seemed to compare shots with and without screens wouldn’t open, so we don’t cite it. Other results were affiliate lists and resale pages that we ignored. Specs come from each listing, and so do the claims about channeling, which we mark as the makers’ own.

Puck screen questions, answered

Do puck screens actually work?

They keep the shower screen cleaner, and that’s the most solid benefit. Whether they improve extraction is unproven in anything we could read. Coffee Chronicler says the channeling benefit holds “in theory”.

Does the screen go above or below the coffee?

Above. It sits on the tamped puck, under the shower screen. It doesn’t replace your machine’s shower screen, as KNODOS’s listing helpfully points out.

Espresso pouring into a metal cup.

Should I change my dose?

Possibly. Thick screens take up room. Start by checking clearance, then adjust dose or grind. A thin disc usually needs little or no change.

How do I clean a puck screen?

Rinse after each shot. Most listings allow a soak with coffee detergent or, for Normcore, a blast from the steam wand. MHW-3BOMBER says not to use a dishwasher.

What size for a Breville?

Most Breville models with 54mm portafilters use a screen around 53.3 to 53.5mm. Crema names the Barista line, and its 58.5mm version names the Dual Boiler and Oracle.

Our final pick for your basket

The Normcore 58.5mm is the one we’d pick for 58mm machines, and the Crema for Breville owners. Add one to a setup that already has a good tamper, and keep your knock box close for spent pucks.
