Wire, Woven or Rattan? How to Pick the Best Bread Basket

How to pick the best bread basket for your table: eight wire, woven and rattan baskets, what size to buy, and why a napkin liner matters.

A plain basket of sliced bread on the table.

A basket of warm bread is one of the small things that turns a meal into a table. It gives everyone something to reach for while the rest of the food arrives, and it is easier to pass than a cutting board. It only takes a napkin and something to hold it.

This guide covers bread baskets for serving at the table, in wire, woven poly and rattan. They are not the same thing as the cane baskets used for rising dough, which are in our bread proofing basket guide, and they are not for storing a loaf for days, which is what a bread box does best.

Quick verdict: which bread basket to buy

For most tables, the pick is the Gourmet Basics by Mikasa Rope Metal Oval Bread Basket: a good family size, a food-safe coating and a look that belongs on a dinner table. For a whole loaf, buy the long Kouboo La Jolla Rattan Bread Basket. For a restaurant-style table, buy the Winco Natural Oval Woven Basket.

Our picks for the best bread basket

Every basket below is a serving basket that its own listing ties to bread, from an identifiable maker, and every one was in stock with a new offer when we checked.

1. Gourmet Basics by Mikasa Rope Metal Oval Bread Basket – A Table Piece That Lasts

Best overallGourmet Basics by Mikasa 5153171 Rope Metal Oval Bread Basket

Most baskets on this page come from restaurant supply, and they look like it. This one is made for a dining table. Mikasa’s Gourmet Basics line is sold through home stores, and this oval basket has a rope-twist rim and an antique black finish that looks settled on a wooden table.

At 11 by 7 inches, it is a good size for a family dinner. The listing says it is perfect for a basket of warm bread or rolls, and it can hold fruit as a centerpiece between meals. That second job matters, because a bread basket that only comes out for holidays usually ends up forgotten on a high shelf.

The listing describes heavy-gauge carbon steel with a BPA-free, food-safe powder coating. The basket comes pre-assembled and asks only for a wipe with a damp cloth. Mikasa’s own page, as shown in search results, describes the rope basket as iron, so we would call it simply metal. Being open wire, it will shed crumbs onto the table, so lay a clean cloth napkin in it before the bread goes in. That also keeps the rolls warmer for a little longer.

Why we like it

  • Food-safe powder coating, per the listing
  • Rope-twist design for the dining table
  • Good family size at 11 by 7 inches
  • Doubles as a fruit basket

Key specifications

Model 5153171
Material Coated metal; steel per the listing
Size 11 x 7 in
Count 1 basket
Shape Oval
Liner Not included
Care Wipe with a damp cloth
Made in Not stated

Why we recommend it

If you want one basket that looks good on the table and suits most dinners, this is the one to buy. It has the clearest statement on food contact of anything on this page.

Skip it if you want something to go through the dishwasher. This one is wipe clean only.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Handsome on a dinner table
  • Food-safe coating stated
  • Works for fruit too

Cons

  • No liner included
  • Wipe clean only
  • Open wire lets crumbs through

2. Kouboo La Jolla Rattan Bread Basket – Long Enough for a Whole Loaf

Best for a whole loafKOUBOO La Jolla Bread Basket

A round basket leaves a long loaf hanging over the edge. The Kouboo La Jolla solves that by being long and narrow. At 17 inches by 7.5 inches and only 2.5 inches high, it can hold a full loaf, and the listing says it will also take bagels, rolls and muffins.

This is the only natural-fiber basket on the page. It is handwoven rattan with a clear lacquer finish, in a honey brown color, and it comes ready to use. It has no handles, so it is a table piece to fill and set down, not something to carry around. The shape also works well along the middle of a long table, where a round basket gets in the way of the dishes.

Rattan asks for a bit more care than metal. The listing says to wipe it clean and to keep it in a dry place indoors, since moisture is not good for woven fiber. Use a cloth napkin underneath the bread, because crumbs are hard to get out of a weave. The listing gives a one year limited warranty. We searched for an independent review of this basket and found none, so this pick rests on the listing and on Kouboo selling this line through several large retailers.

Why we like it

  • 17 inches long, enough for a full loaf
  • Handwoven rattan with clear lacquer
  • Low sides make serving easy
  • One year limited warranty, per the listing

Key specifications

Model 1020038
Material Rattan, clear lacquer
Size 17 x 7.5 x 2.5 in
Count 1 basket
Shape Long oblong
Liner Not included
Care Wipe clean; keep dry
Made in Not stated

Why we recommend it

If you bake long loaves or buy baguettes, this is the shape you want. It is also the warmest looking basket on the page.

Skip it if you want a basket that can get wet. Rattan does not want a soak in the sink.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Fits a long loaf
  • Natural woven look
  • Light and easy to handle

Cons

  • Wipe clean only
  • Crumbs settle in the weave
  • No handles

3. Winco 9.5 Inch Natural Oval Woven Basket – The Restaurant Standard

Best restaurant styleNatural Oval Cracker Poly Woven Basket

This is the kind of basket that lands on a restaurant table with a napkin and a few warm rolls in it. Winco sells it for table service, and the listing says it is great for holding individual servings of breads, muffins and rolls.

The size is 9.5 by 6.25 inches and 3 inches deep, so it suits a small table or one basket for every two or three diners. It is woven poly, not natural cane, so it has the look of a classic woven basket in a plastic-based material. The neutral color goes with most table settings.

Check one detail. The listing’s unit count field says 12, while the title does not state a pack size, so look at the current offer to see how many you will get. If it is a dozen, that works for a party or a family with many hands, and you can give each end of a long table its own basket. The listing gives no care instructions, so we would wipe it down or wash it by hand and let it dry.

Why we like it

  • Sold for restaurant table service
  • Listing names breads, muffins and rolls
  • Woven look in a poly material
  • 3 inches deep for a good pile of rolls

Key specifications

Model PWBN-9V
Material Woven poly
Size 9.5 x 6.25 x 3 in

Skip it if you want just one basket. Check the pack count first.

  • Good depth
  • Neutral color

Cons

  • Pack size unclear
  • Care not stated
  • Not a natural fiber

4. TableCraft Artisan 9 Inch Rectangular Basket – Neat Wire, Square Corners

Best rectangularTableCraft BK17209

TableCraft’s Artisan Collection is black powder-coated wire, and the rectangular BK17209 is the most useful size for a small table. At 9.125 by 6.125 inches and about 2.3 inches deep, it holds a pile of dinner rolls or sliced bread, and its square corners sit neatly among plates in a way an oval does not.

The listing says it is for bread, bagels and pastries, on a buffet or a table. It also suggests napkins, soaps and towels, so it can stay in use when it is not at dinner. The powder-coated finish is what gives it the clean black look.

Care is the catch. The Amazon listing does not state it, but restaurant supply retailers describe the Artisan line as hand wash only, and buyers of a similar Artisan basket said hand washing and air drying kept the finish in good shape. One worried the coating might not survive repeated trips through a dishwasher. So wash it by hand, and line it with a napkin or paper so bread does not sit on the bare wire.

Why we like it

  • Listing names bread, bagels and pastries
  • Powder-coated black metal
  • Square corners save table space
  • A restaurant supply maker

Key specifications

Model BK17209
Material Powder-coated metal
Size 9.125 x 6.125 x 2.325 in
Count 1 basket
Shape Rectangular
Liner Not included
Care Hand wash, per retailers
Made in Not stated

Why we recommend it

If your table is modern and your space is tight, this is the tidy choice. It looks like a restaurant basket without looking like a fast food one.

Skip it if you want the dishwasher to do the work. This finish wants hand washing.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Clean modern look
  • Fits tight tables
  • Light and sturdy wire

Cons

  • Hand wash only
  • No liner
  • Bare wire needs a napkin

5. TableCraft Artisan 8 Inch Round Basket – Rolls for a Small Table

Best roundTableCraft BK17508

Same line, different shape. The BK17508 is an 8 inch round basket about 2.25 inches deep, in the same black powder-coated wire as the rectangular basket above. A round basket suits a square or round table, because it can sit in the middle where everyone can reach it.

It is the right size for four to six dinner rolls, some sliced bolillo, or a few pan dulce at breakfast. The listing says it is for bread, bagels and pastries. We include both TableCraft shapes because the shape is the whole decision here. The material and care are identical, so pick the one that suits your table.

As with the rest of the Artisan line, retailers describe it as hand wash only, and the Amazon listing does not state care. It comes with no liner, so a small cloth napkin is the natural partner. The wire shows off the napkin, which is part of the look and makes it easy to change the feel of the table without buying anything else.

Why we like it

  • Listing names bread, bagels and pastries
  • Small round footprint
  • Powder-coated black metal
  • Reach from any side of the table

Key specifications

Model BK17508
Material Powder-coated metal
Size 8 x 8 x 2.25 in
Count 1 basket
Shape Round
Liner Not included
Care Hand wash, per retailers
Made in Not stated

Why we recommend it

If you have a round table, or you serve bread to two to four people, this is an easy, tidy size.

Skip it if you need to feed a big table. Eight inches goes quickly.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Good for smaller tables
  • Easy to reach from any side
  • Matches the other Artisan shapes

Cons

  • Hand wash only
  • No liner
  • Small for a big dinner

6. Cal-Mil Portland Large Black Wire Basket – Deep Enough for a Big Pile

Best for a big tableCal Mil Portland Large Black Basket

Most bread baskets are shallow. The Cal-Mil Portland is not. At 10.5 inches across and 5.5 inches high, it is the deepest on this page, which makes it more of a bowl of rolls than a tray. Cal-Mil makes display and serving ware for restaurants and catering.

The listing is straightforward about what to do with it: add a napkin and serve homemade breads, muffins or pastries. That depth suits a holiday table, where one large basket of rolls gets passed around and refilled, and it also holds pan dulce on a brunch buffet. Cal-Mil describes it as a centerpiece full of food, and it has enough presence to do that.

The listing gives few details beyond durable wire construction and a black color, and it states no care instructions, so hand wash it and dry it right away. A deep basket uses a larger napkin than a shallow one, so have a big square of cloth ready. It is also the one to choose if you want the bread to stay together under a folded napkin between passes.

Why we like it

  • Listing says to add a napkin and serve bread
  • Deep 5.5 inch sides
  • Large enough to share
  • Doubles as a buffet centerpiece

Key specifications

Model 4114-10-13
Material Black wire
Size 10.5 in dia. x 5.5 in high
Count 1 basket
Shape Round, deep
Liner Not included; add a napkin
Care Not stated
Made in Not stated

Why we recommend it

If you serve a big table or a holiday dinner, buy this. It holds much more bread than the shallow baskets here.

Skip it if you need a low basket. It stands tall and may block the view across a small table.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Holds the most rolls
  • Strong table presence
  • Suits a buffet

Cons

  • Care not stated
  • Needs a large napkin
  • Tall for a small table

7. G.E.T. 8 Inch Round Serving and Bread Basket, Set of 12 – Dishwasher Safe, for a Party

Best for partiesG.E.T. RB-820-W Round Serving / Bread Basket

G.E.T. makes serving ware for restaurants, and this is a set of 12 white polypropylene baskets, each 8 inches round. The listing calls them shatterproof, says the meshed sides allow airflow, and says they stack for storage. It is the only pick here that is sold as dishwasher safe.

Twelve is more than a family needs for one dinner, but it makes sense for a large party, a taco night with a lot of guests, a church supper or a school event. Give every table two baskets and you are done. The listing suggests a food-safe paper liner for anything from chips and salsa to hot dogs, and that is good advice for bread as well, since it keeps the basket clean and makes clearing faster.

They look like restaurant baskets, so they are not for a formal dinner. They are also useful around the house after the party. One can hold tortilla chips for salsa, and another can hold fries from the oven. For more ideas on feeding a crowd at home, see our taco bar supplies guide.

Why we like it

  • Dishwasher safe, per the listing
  • Shatterproof polypropylene
  • Stack for storage
  • Twelve baskets for a crowd

Key specifications

Model RB-820-W
Material Polypropylene
Size 8 in round
Count Set of 12
Shape Round
Liner Paper liner suggested, not included
Care Dishwasher safe
Made in China

Why we recommend it

If you host often or need baskets for an event, this is the practical buy. They wash easily and stack away.

Skip it if you only want one basket for the family table. A set of 12 is too many.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Dishwasher safe
  • Will not break if dropped
  • Stacks away

Cons

  • Sold only as a set of 12
  • Casual look
  • Needs paper liners

8. TableCraft Artisan 9 x 4 Inch Oblong Basket – Slim for Sliced Baguette

Best slim basketTableCraft BK11709

This narrow basket is 9 inches long and only 4 inches wide, which makes it a good fit for a row of sliced baguette or bolillo, or for a few breadsticks. It runs down the middle of a small table without taking the space of a full basket, and it also suits a shared cheese board or a bar snack.

It is the same black powder-coated wire as the two TableCraft baskets above, and the listing says it is for bread, bagels and pastries. We list it as a separate pick because its use is different. At only 2 inches deep, it will not hold a heap of rolls, but it keeps slices standing in a neat line.

The care is the same too: hand wash, per retailers, since the Amazon listing does not say. Fold a long napkin into it, or use a strip of parchment, so the bread does not sit on the wire. It is small enough to store in a drawer, which is more than can be said of most baskets.

Why we like it

  • Listing names bread, bagels and pastries
  • Narrow 4 inch width
  • Good for sliced bread in a row
  • Stores in a drawer

Key specifications

Model BK11709
Material Powder-coated metal
Size 9 x 4 x 2 in
Count 1 basket
Shape Narrow oblong
Liner Not included
Care Hand wash, per retailers
Made in Not stated

Why we recommend it

If you often serve sliced bread alongside soup, salad or cheese, this is a useful second basket.

Skip it if it would be your only basket. It holds too little for most dinners.

Pros and cons

Pros

  • Very compact
  • Neat for sliced bread
  • Matches the other Artisan shapes

Cons

  • Small capacity
  • Hand wash only
  • No liner

How to choose a bread basket

A bread basket is simple, so the choice comes down to the size of your table, what you serve and how you want to clean up.

Start with what you serve

Rolls and pan dulce want a deep, round or oval basket. A long loaf or baguette wants a long, narrow one. Sliced bolillo sits well in a slim basket, standing in a row. Think about the bread you buy most often and choose for that, not for the holiday meal you have once a year.

Measure the space on the table

A bread basket should sit where two or three people can reach it. On a table with plates, glasses and serving dishes, an 8 or 9 inch basket is usually enough. A long table may do better with two small baskets than with one big one. If you serve on a serving tray, measure it, since a basket should sit flat inside the rim.

A rustic baked loaf of bread with a golden crust
A long loaf needs a long basket.

Use a liner

Open wire and woven baskets are not sealed surfaces, and most of them come without a liner. A clean cloth napkin or a sheet of food-safe paper keeps crumbs from falling through, keeps the bread off the basket and makes washing up simpler. Cal-Mil’s listing says it plainly: just add a napkin. A folded napkin over the top also holds in some warmth.

Be realistic about warmth

A plain basket does not keep bread hot. A napkin slows the cooling, and that is about all. If warm bread matters, heat it right before you serve it and bring it out in small batches. For tortillas, a dedicated tortilla warmer is the better tool, and our guide to reheating Mexican leftovers covers how to warm them. You will also find baskets sold with terracotta warming stones, which are covered in our notes on what we left out below.

Check how it cleans

Powder-coated wire should be washed by hand. Rattan should be wiped and kept dry. G.E.T.’s polypropylene baskets can go in the dishwasher. If you know you will not hand wash a basket, buy the G.E.T. set or plan to use paper liners every time.

How we chose these eight bread baskets

We have not used these baskets ourselves. We started from what a kitchen asks of a bread basket: hold the bread, sit neatly on the table and clean up easily. We looked at baskets sold on Amazon in the United States by identifiable makers, and we kept only baskets whose own listing ties them to bread. That ruled out many nice wire baskets from good foodservice makers, which are listed only as wire baskets or are aimed at sandwiches and fries.

Stock ruled out others, including several Winco and TableCraft woven baskets that were running low. Banneton proofing baskets showed up in most searches, but those are for rising dough. A Lenox porcelain basket is attractive, but porcelain needs a maker’s lead-free statement on this site and we did not have one. We also left out warming sets with terracotta stones, including a Mud Pie set, because the listings did not tell us enough about the terracotta, and most others came from little-known brands. Many low-cost poly wicker sets also came from brands with no independent review, so we passed on them for something that touches food.

A person eating at a long table full of bread and shared dishes
Bread goes where everyone can reach it.

Independent reviews are thin. Our searches found retailer listings, a few buyer comments and affiliate roundups, but no test of these baskets from a publication we would cite, and we found no independent review of the Kouboo. So these picks rest on the listing and maker details, and we say so plainly.

Bread basket questions, answered

What is the best bread basket for the table?

For most homes, an oval basket of about 9 to 11 inches is the right size, lined with a napkin. Our first pick is the Mikasa rope basket. For a long loaf, choose the Kouboo.

Do you need a liner in a bread basket?

We would use one. A cloth napkin or food-safe paper catches crumbs and keeps bread off the wire or weave. G.E.T. suggests a food-safe paper liner on its listing, and Cal-Mil suggests a napkin. Wash cloth liners between meals.

How do you keep bread warm in a basket?

Warm the bread just before serving, line the basket with a thick napkin and fold the corners over the top. That will hold some warmth for a while, but a plain basket is not a warmer. Bring out a second small batch instead of filling the basket once.

How do you clean a bread basket?

Follow the listing. Mikasa says to wipe with a damp cloth, Kouboo says to wipe it clean and keep it dry, and G.E.T. says its baskets are dishwasher safe. Retailers describe TableCraft’s Artisan baskets as hand wash only. Dry any metal basket right away.

Can a bread basket be used for fruit or tortillas?

Yes for fruit, and Mikasa’s listing suggests it. For tortillas, a basket works for serving at room temperature, but it will not keep them warm or soft. A lidded warmer is a better choice for that.

Our first choice for your table

Buy the Mikasa if you want one good basket for family dinners, the Kouboo for a long loaf, or the Winco for a restaurant look. To go with it, see our guides to the best bread box, the best bread knife and the best butter dish.
